Great teacher, hilarious, makes class fun
Really hard class but he curves, funny, wacky, makes class fun.
great teacher - you learn a LOT
No Comments
The way he stares people up and down when he checks role is absolutely FREAKY.
Awesome guy. You learn so much in his class. Makes everything fun.
schedules all quizes for fridays. has a curse of knowledge, and if you're not an econ major, it hard as hell. assigns lots of homework. he's an ass. don't take it if you don't have to.
interesting class, mostly tests & quizzes, homework helps but is not collected... grades on a curve... probably one of the easier econ teachers
DO NOT take him for this class if you dont have to. His exams and quizes are super hard. He assigns a huge amount of work and does not care about any other thing that you might have due that day or what you have going on.
he is sooo~ helpful and explains really well. econ overall is hard but he makes it understandable
he is definately not the best teacher, but if you have to take econ, you probably want to get him because all other econ teachers are worse than him!! tests and quizzes are hard, but the curve is really good, I don't study too much and I have a C!
tests are impossible and nothing like any of the quizzes or problems done during class. DONT TAKE HIM.
Take this Professor. It a really hard class, and you will have to put in alot of effort, but he makes it interesting. Tests are very hard, but he gives an amazing curve. He really knows his stuff about Econ, you will learn alot.
SUPER HARD CLASS!! Teaches to fast and is not very helpful. He goes on and on about the material expecting you to know everything already. exams are hard and quizzes suck. Oh yeah! he makes u write a sh*t load of journals. don't take him for 372!!!
Hard as ****.
Great guy! Test are hard, but he curves...alot!
Great teacher! Weird sense of humor grows on you. No surprises on tests. Do homework and you'll do fine. HUGE CURVE helps. Don't skip, he hates that! Calls people out who aren't paying attention. Approachable and helpful.
Very knowledgable.
Very easy to understand.
He is really hard in terms of tests and quizzes, plus he randomly calls on you and puts you on the spot to make you look like an idiot in front of the whole class! Don't take this guy...
I recommend taking from Elwood. The class itself is very challenging, but he is always willing to answer questions and help you out. Moves quickly enough to keep it interesting. Very funny guy. I enjoy the class (and him) immensly.
this class is just hard. but he's willing to help if you just go to his office hours. he is very fair in grading and his tests are kinda hard, but hey...it's econ
WOW!!!!wonderful teacher. knowlegable. lots curves on tests. funny guy. sometimes, makes wondering if he 's high. take his class.
This class sucks....however, Elwood is a great teacher. He makes it fun and he's a really nice guy. Better than the other choices.
Material is very challenging, however it is presented in a very clear and understandable manner. Be in class, study hard...you'll learn a lot.
ELWOOD SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!
Although he is very tough, and his exams are killer, he is a very nice, understanding guy. Micro itself, unless you have some fetish for economics, is hard, so when people discuss the difficulty of the class you need to keep that in mind. Take him :-)
He makes micro bareable. You are an idiot to not get a b or c. He is so clear and reviews the material well. The tests are inpossible, but slaps a huge curve on them. Makes grades to scale. A pain on attendance and he hasn't canceled a class yet.
my favorite teacher at JMU, do the reading and study for the tests and you will be fine.
smart and funny. tests aren't bad at all. just pay attention in class and you'll do fine. go to him if you have any questions. he's one of the best teachers i've had at jmu
Great great teacher. Class is hard however, tests are pretty difficult but straight foward. No real surprises. GO TO CLASS, thats the big thing, one miss class and you miss a ton. Overall great class.
He is a very fair teacher and makes this difficult class fun.
Very good teacher. Explain very well. Tests very fair. Not extremelly hard, but not too easy. If you study you get at least a B. Take him!
He's kind of quirky, but really knows his macro. He seems to generally dislike Current Account deficits, but who doesn't?
Such a nice man and very interesting class. Cares about his students and wants them to do well.. a wonderful professor!
A difficult, very interesting class. Elwood is a brilliant, hilarious professor that is one of my favorite. Expect to keep up with homework along the way, but you will learn tons of applicable, cool stuff.
Nice guy. The class itself is very very hard. Tests are all like short essays. Interesting material but unless you are a genius i would recommend taking an easier elective.
i had elwood for intermediate macro last fall, and i really liked the class...heard some bad things about him b4 the class, but they were unfounded...cool guy, id recommend him a lot...
Honestly the best professor I've had at JMU. Class was pretty tough but he explains everything very clearly. Tests are not bad if you read the very clear book and go to class. If you want to actually learn something about econ and probably get a good grade take Dr. Elwood.
Difficult material, but by far the best class and best professor I have had.
INTA Majors, get ready to bust your ass and still fail
Take him! He's really nice and he curves!
Hard material. Clear and helpful professor. Great curve, has the common sense to understand your point of view. Very fair grading and nice guy. Highly recommended, especially considering some of the other ECON professors.
Everyone is right about the hardness of this class, he is a really smart guy and very funny, but this freakin class is harder than COB 292 (which is a hard class I thought), FIN 300, 360, 365, 371, all of which I've taken. Not a good elective for anyone who doesn't plan to attend every class and put in a couple hours of homework before every class
The material is some of the hardest I've ever had. I don't think his expectations are through the roof. He just tests on what the material dictates. Very nice, and helpful outside class.
He's ok but material is hard
Very Hard class. You can study all you want but his test/quiz/pop-quiz questions are rediculously hard (and i'm an Econ major). It's also impossible to know what you have in the class at any time. Definitely better professors out there
I had Elwood for 332 and 372, great teacher! If you read the textbook and look over your notes you can definitely do well in the class. He grades completely on a curve. Make sure to ask him questions if you have any. I would definitely take him again.
Busted my tail in this class and got a C. Never had a C in my life. DO NOT TAKE HIM! TESTS ARE IMPOSSIBLE, NO MULTI CHOICE
good teacher, understands the subject very well, connects to real world situations. Grading based on class averages, so if the test is hard and no one does well the grades are curved. As a teacher he is not hard, but the subject itself can be hard to understand.
What a Wonderful professor !!!! You'll get a lot of knowledge in his class - he is very interested in teaching his students. Tests are not easy but he always curves. recommend to take Dr Elwood!
Elwood is one of the best teachers I have taken at JMU. Really enjoys what he does and I think that makes it easier for students. Applies everything to the real world so you actually end up learning something that you will use the rest of your life. Great guy.
He is a good teacher with genuine motives. My only criticism would be that he kind of jumps around a lot during lecture so its kind of confusing. Also the tests are very hard. But i would recommend him if you HAVE to take the class.
His tests are ALL short answer, zero mult. choice. Tests include material from like 5 chapters; way too much information to remember all at once. Kinda rude if you point out his mistakes. Studied my head off for tests, barely made it out of the class with a C+/B-... Take him only if you HAVE TO.
It's a hard class. But he explains the material well, and does a good job of keeping your attention, considering the material. You don't have to buy a book and all the lectures are supplemented with concise online handouts. The only bad thing is that he assigns homework for almost every class, and you have to do journals on about 30 econ articles.
Made this GEN ED 389207304x more difficult. ALL short answer, a ton of graphing, the whole sem. grade is dependent on tests; no other chances for redemption of your grade. Makes all of his Qs very tricky. Ended up giving us a 40pt curve because of the difficulty of the Qs. FAIL THE TESTS, FAIL THE COURSE. I would 100% RECOMMEND ANOTHER PROFESSOR.
Tests are all short answer. Tricky and hard tests. U have to read the book & do all of the homework. Requires much time after class. Makes you scrutinize the subject. Major curves on tests so if you don't slack you will def. get an A. I did! I really got to love the subject. Keeps the lecture interesting. Have to write VERY FAST for note taking!
He is a nice guy, but has no idea how to teach. 3 tests all of short answer, some quite tricky even while keeping up with reading/h.w. I wouldn't suggest taking him if you don't have to. If you do, prepare to memorize all the nitt-picky stuff you can, b.c thats what he tests on!
This class is really fricken difficult. hes nice but..Be ready to study atleast 3-4 hours for every Quiztest (and even more for tests) . His lectures arent that helpful because he doesnt explain a lot of what is difficult, you should read before class. too much homework. really hard especially for an INTA major.
Dr. Elwood is a great professor. I am an INTA major and I have no problems getting A's on his tests. His lectures are easy to follow and he tries to engage the whole class.
Elwood is AWESOME - funny, and very passionate about the subject, and will love you if you come into his office hours. He is HARD though - he curves generously, but it is still one of the hardest classes I've taken in college, but definitely worth it. Take him if you're up for a (good) challenge.
It's a tough class because of the material, but Elwood is an interesting professor. You need to put in alot of study time for his quiz/tests and exams, but they are fair and are based on subjects we have gone over alot in class. Not a bad class, but make sure you read and re-read his handouts that are in place of a textbook for the class.
Elwood is the man. HARD material but definitely do-able-- HUGE CURVES on everything. I finished w/ a B+ despite the fact I was high all semester long--if I can do it, y'all can do it.
Dr. Elwood is a great professor. This has been one of the most interesting classes I have taken at JMU. It is a hard class but a good grade is definitely doable. I recommend this professor and class.
He is such a good professor but gives HARD tests. You definitely need to be put time into studying before the tests and quizzes. he is a great professor and the class is really interesting. tip, read the articles when they are assigned it will help at the end of the year. highly recommended
Grades by position in the class, class averages were about 50% Studying extra hard and still getting nearly half the questions wrong gets very frustrating, even if it's still a B. Be prepared to work very hard and get a decent grade, but be constantly frustrated if you are used to actually getting test problems right. Not very available.
I highly recommend taking this class. Elwood is the man. This is the only class that I have actually learned something useful. You'll learn everything you need to know about how this crazy world works and understand this economic crisis. Hard class but man up and take it.
Okay, the guy knows what he's talking about. He explains stuff pretty well, but his tests are another story. You will not pass his tests unless you've mastered everything. The tests cover so much ground you might just end up studying the wrong thing too much. Tests are short answer and tricky, and like I said cover an impossible amount.
This class is a hard class, but it's difficult material. Prof. Elwood is a really laid back and intellegent man and tries his hardest to explain the material clearly. The tests are hard though... all short answer. MUST read the book to fully understand and do well.
His tests are impossible. They are all short answer and usually only 15 questions. You have to study 6 or 7 chapters, for a 15 question test which usually means you are studying the wrong material. The average on his tests was a 48%. DON'T TAKE HIM
Tests are hard if you've never studied economics before, but you learn a lot in the class and Elwood's entertaining. I'd recommend him but be prepared for a couple rough nights of studying throughout the semester, and don't skip many classes.
HARD gened. If you don't have to take econ for your major, DO NOT take it. Elwood is the man but his tests are 15 short answers on 5 chapters at a time, very difficult.
Impossible tests. His notes are ALL OVER THE PLACE! It's so frustrating. Though he does know the information inside and out. Very experienced. Hard class, but if you study a lot for the tests, then you can get a B. Do not miss one of these classes or you will be completely lost.
Elwood is the man! His tests are 13-15 short answer questions which can be difficult, but he does curve them. His lectures are interesting and enjoyable. He is a quirky guy, but it makes the class fun. I am now an econ major because of him. Highly recommend taking him
he is really a nice teacher!
good teacher, keeps you interested, there to help but way to hard of quizes and tests
he is awesome. not only a great teacher but an awesome guy. He is passionate and informed about the topic and a lot more than that. I had his class at 8 am Mo,Wed,Fri and honestly looked forward to going. He is so funny and makes really good use of the text book. I actually also changed my major to econ just because of this class. CHOOSE HIM!
Elwood is a great teacher. Probably the most helpful teacher I have ever had in office hours. Tests are straight forward if you study, if you dont know something on the test its your fault. Great teacher, funny guy, i would take him.
He's the man, you're not going to find a better micro teacher
This class is not easy but if you put in the work and do all the extra practice problems there is no reason not to get an A. He is an interesting guy and great teacher. Read the book do all the homework and there will be no suprises on the the tests.
Elwood is a probably a genius. This is great because he always knows what he is doing but can suck when you're confused. While he tries to be friendly and helpful, but his philosophy is essentially "learn it yourself." He will challenged you but he is completely fair.
This is the hardest class I have ever taken at JMU. This could be so avoidable if the professor actually taught you the material on the tests. He assigns homework everyday but doesnt teach you how to do it. Talks about articles for most of lecture which we arent tested on. He says his quiz was a good one because the class average was 40%. Avoid!
Terrible Teacher. Don't you dare miss a class, cause he will call you out on it the next day and hate on you the rest of the semester. He comes off as a "I know it all" kind of person. High ego, low consideration of students. His grading has no structure. Quizzes are impossible even if you memorize the textbook. Avoid at all costs.
does not teach you anything that he will use on the test. does not give any indication on what he plans to put on the test. class is useless. have to read the entire book, do all his homework, and extra problems to have a PRAYER. AVOID
Dr Elwood, is probably one of JMU's most arrogant professors that I have ever met. He doesnt teach you anything, what he goes over in class is never on the test and you have to teach yourself. Avoid at all costs, unless you are willing to make this class your life!
SO hard. Avoid at all costs
He's a good teacher if you care, had him for Junemester and I personally love him but he's not easy. Read, do the extra problems and go to class and you'll be fine. He gives you all the opportunities to learn, but you need to put in the effort to survive.
He knows what he's talking about and I barely leave class without understanding what was just taught. but make sure you go to class and take notes on everything. he gives you elaborate and long study guides for exams but everything is from the notes and nothing on exams are from the textbook. so take notes, do the study guides over and over
Elwood is an amazing professor, although his class is tough. 372 is probably one of the most valuable at JMU. Understanding markets wjile incorporating current events make up the majority of course content. Tests and quizzes are pretty tough, though he does curve. Definitely one of the hardest courses I've taken at JMU, but it's extremely valuable.
Elwood is a great professor, most of the people in the class don't take the time to utilize the study guides and the review sessions outside of class. In this class you get out what you put into it. He doesn't make it easy but gives students all the opportunities they need to get an A.
I thought he was pretty clear in his lectures, but many other students struggled with this class. You have to read the textbook and it helps to do the extra problems if you have never taken econ before. Most of the material on the tests was talked about in class, but reading the textbook is very helpful.
He makes you do homework from the textbook, but he always puts the answers online. Has three test, three quizzes that take place before each test, and a final. DO THE EXTRA PROBLEMS HE PUTS ON CANVAS BEFORE THE QUIZZES AND TESTS. This will improve your grade so much (trust me). Overall a pretty entertaining guy. Would recommend taking him for ECON.
Elwood cracks a couple jokes, and the lectures aren't that tough to get through. 3 tests, homework problems every night, but not too too difficult for micro.
He has a fun sense of humor. It is a very hard course even when you pay attention in class and do textbook work outside of glass. Quizzes and tests are very hard
do NOT take elwood. there is a ton of homework and reading and they dont even help. the exams cover way too much material and he is an extremely tough grader. his lectures are very vague and you have to teach yourself the whole class. unless you are really good at econ already, dont take him.
Elwood is one of the best professors i've had so far. He is very entertaining and the class goes by fast. The tests arent easy but they are all curved based on how your class does. DO NOT blow off the pre test warmup quizzes that he gives before the test because they can really help/hurt your test grade. I Strongly recommend him.
Elwood is a decent guy. He cracks a few jokes and likes to try and relate to his students, which is always nice. His class on the other hand is pretty tough. Very heavy textbook use, and there will be problems assigned out of the book every night. His tests and pre-test quizzes are hard, so make sure you actually read the book and pay attention.
I like the class and lectures, however the tests are very difficult. There are 3 quizes, 3 exams, and 1 final. The tests are not multiple choice, and require you to pay very close attention in class and complete the assigned homework. Overall though I though the class was challenging, and I fell like I really learned ECON.
Elwood is an oddball guy, but for micro, he's probably your best bet. Three tests accompanied by 3 Pre-Test Warm-up Quizzes, and a final. Collects homework at random for a grade. He knows what he's talking about, but lectures can be boring. Not an easy A, but doable if you REALLY pay attention. DO THE EXTRA QUESTIONS, exact same as tests.
Unless you're the most rugged econ freak I'd avoid. His class was an elective for me. Quizzes/tests are all short answer and ask incredibly specific questions. There's no way to know what questions will be on the tests/quizzes, so the only method of studying is to memorize everything. The grades on everything are 50%, and he's OK with that.
Definitely a difficult class for a beginning Econ class. His lectures are fast paced, and homework is based off the textbook. He gives 3 regular exams with "pre-warm up quizzes" given the class before the exam. His final is cumulative. Make sure to do the problems he gives you separate from the book for practice (including the extra questions).
I honestly almost dropped this class but I'm really glad that I didn't. It was difficult but econ is a hard subject. For me it got easier as the semester went on and I knew what to expect from him. He curves a lot so as long as you do better than the class average you will be fine. Do the practice problems!!
Professor Elwood is a pretty cool guy overall. Probably one of your best bets for 201. Tests and quizzes are all free response so you will actually learn Econ. Everything is curved based on the class scores so it's almost impossible to fail, but also very difficult to get an A.
Elwood was a funny professor, highly recommend taking him for 201. Although you need to be ready to eat sleep and breathe micro!
Elwood is type of guy you'll remember 20 years after college. Bit of a tough class, work hard and you'll be okay.
He was by far the best professor I have ever had at JMU. If I could retake this class I would. He makes the class enjoyable and I learned more in this class than any other class I have ever taken.
Kirk is hilarious, caring, & an expert on the material. I'm a senior & 372 is the hardest class I've taken at JMU but also one of my favorites. He assigns homework almost every class & only grades it occasionally, but if you don't do the homework it'd be impossible to do well on the quizzes or exams. I learned more in his class than any other class
Here is the deal: you gotta work hard to do well in his classes but you will learn a lot! his exams are really tough and he is harsh when it comes to grading. However, everything is based on average which is B-! I got 75 percent in his class and ended up with A, but hey it is not that easy to get that 75 percent!
Elwood is funny and I liked him as a person, but his teaching style is not great. his lectures are random and don't really flow which makes studying really hard. also, homework, quizzes, and tests cover a lot of material he never touches so it is mostly a teach yourself class. if you can find another professor i would.
Do not take him. His lectures are very general and he trails off then tests and quizzes are extremely specific on things not even discussed in class. He grades tests so harshly, and doesn't explain his answers. He just writes them on the board. It seems like he has not interest in helping students succeed and enjoys watching us panic and stress....
Just NO. Even if you know the material, he will take points off for god knows what and when you ask, he will not tell you what you missed. Screams at students randomly. Doesn't explain anything. Lectures are useless and expects you to learn everything off of textbook reading when the questions he asks on tests aren't in the textbook or lectures.
NOPE! Run! Take anyone else!
I don't know anything that he says and most people in class don't either. He treats this class like an upper level econ class and only grades off of a couple tests. The test material is vague in the textbook and his classes are even more vague.
Doesn't use canvas. Changes quiz and test dates on syllabus without warning until the night before. I don't know how anyone can pass his class unless they have a 200 IQ. Lectures would be more understandable if they were given in Chinese or Arabic.
I cannot believe I got a C. Most people straight up failed and with good reason. I suggest you take any other professor for this gen ed requirement.
I have mixed feelings about Elwood. He does a good job explaining some concepts and applying them to current events, and he is kinda funny when he yells people's names. Going to class wasn't very useful sometimes as he just talked about his politics for a while. Average grades are about 40%, but it's based on the class average, so it doesn't matter
Dr. Elwood is a solid choice as he is an good lecturer. He does a rather excellent job in explaining the concepts and his class is structured by his own notes that he provides. With, he does give "quiztests" that are timed and worth a good portion of your grade, but it always feels like there isn't enough time to always finish them.
Do not take this professor. He doesn't care about his students, and he doesn't provide help when you ask for it. Flies through the lectures and gives extremely vague notes. He makes fun of students when they get answers wrong, and calls on students that he knows will not know the answers. For the tests, a bunch of the material was not covered.
Doesn't like his students. You will want to drop out before mid semester. He calls you out in class(even if you are paying attention) and if you skip class. A lot of questions on quizzes/tests that aren't on the reading or homework. Hard to understand his speaking(mumbles), goes fast, and loses train of thought.
Super weird let me be real. He is okay, but will watch or notice when you leave the room. Show up to his class cause he randomly takes attendance. He gives out homework, but he wont grade it for a grade. There is only 3 quizzes and 3 tests. SUPER HARD if you dont study, correction even if you study its still super hard. I wish knew this beforehand.
Prof Elwood lectures all class and is very scatter brained. He asks confusing questions and cold calls you in class and gives passive responses if you don't know the answer. He randomly takes attendance and knows your name. Studied for a test to not even do well. 3 test, 3 pre test quiz class before test and final are only grades. avoid if possibl
The only grades in this class were 3 quizzes and 3 tests. His lectures are sometimes confusing. He will randomly call on people, so you should do the homework to be prepared. There isn't a textbook, just handouts that he makes summarizing material. He is very accessible and helpful in his office hours.
First do the homework and extra practice problems. The test are basically the same as the extra practice problems. He also doesn't use the textbook. Just short word documents he made himself. Honestly macro sucks, but he's not a terrible choice, but you have to be good at math. A lot of math. If you struggle with algebra then I'd take another prof.
His lectures can be interesting sometimes but for the most part they are confusing. You have to read the textbook in order to at least partially understand the lecture. The class is only graded off of 3 quizzes, 3 exams, and a final. Do not take this class if you struggle with taking exams.
The class is challenging, but manageable if you put in the effort. The class is based on blunt handouts that are very content-heavy. He can be a little intimidating, but if you show up to every class and try your best then you'll be fine.
my favorite econ professors. Had him for 200 and 201. if your interested in econ I would take his class. If you want an easy gen ed this isn't it. He's quirky but in a good way that makes lectures interesting. "pre test warm up quizzes are 3 questions in the form that they will be on the test. I NEVER READ TEXTBOOK handout OR HOMEOWRK AND GOT 98
I'm surprised that Professor Elwood has negative reviews. I had 4 classes with him and he was my favorite. Not an easy A, but he is an incredible teacher. He can explain things so clearly that anyone paying attention can understand. Great if you're looking for an education, but not if you're looking to skate through college without effort.
