Very hard teacher, very demanding, and I learned more with Professor Hughes than with anyone else. If you are lazy, avoid him. If you want to learn to write, don't miss him.

He is a very demanding professor. I found him to be funny and worth my while though. You'll learn a lot in class and have to do a lot but it will be worth it in the long run.

He will scare you in the beginning and make you think the class is going to be extremely difficult. Well, I stuck with him and realized it was one of the best decisions of my life. Yes, he will make you write papers, but come on!, what class doesnt. If your not working in your class your probably not learning anything. This professor is incredible.

Extremely intelligent, creative and helpful. Does a great job of inspiring and getting the most out of students. Tough but fair; there seems to be a bit of a grading curve. The dumbest student won't be held to the same standard as the smartest student but you won't get an A just for showing up, you have to do the work. Overall a great asset to HCC

Great teacher. Fun, exciting, gets the whole class involved in talking. I had him for philosophy and we had a two page paper due every class. His main thing is do your work and come to class. He does not accept more than two absences. He will try and scare you the first day. Stick with the class, he is a great teacher. Take his class!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Took his Philosophy course at HCC. It was interesting, but the manner in which he conducted the class made it more interesting. Overall he is an excellent instructor, and he made the class fun and different. Also, he is the first instructor that I have seen that challenges his students to improve and earn a good grade.

Captain Kirk was a little intimidating at first, but then loosened up. His class was extremely entertaining and helpful. In his class you have to work hard, although the work isn't that hard; but you learn so much and will change your perspective on literature forever. He's great!

I would deffinately reccomend him for public speaking! he's very clear in what he wants and makes it fun and comfortable to speak in class. he does many exercises with partners and such to help you get your speeches better before you present them. there was almost no book use we only read one chapter but if you take com173 take him!

Captain Kirk is engaging and fun. He was able to make a seemingly dull course (Public Speaking) much more interesting. I already considered myself to be an adept speaker, but I was still able to learn from this class. The only thing I didn't like was that he was very lenient with due dates, but I figure most people would dig that.

GO TO CLASS! He is very forgiving as long as you show him your eagerness to learn and that take his teaching seriously. He is fun, and understanding, he interact with his students and take their opinions into consideration. Sometimes, he may seem a bit mean, but HE LISTENS, if you are willing to speak. One of the best teachers I have ever had the pleasure of encountering. It is not an easy class. Going to all the classes is very important and the work is no joke either. However after completing a course with Professor Hughes you will not only be a better reader, writer, and student but also a better person.

Captain Kirks unique approach to teaching helped me become a better writer. Being someone who hates writing, he made me interested and almost excited to write my papers! Hughes is an exceptional professor because he genuinely and legitimately invests himself in your education. I've taken all the classes he offers because he makes himself both an asset and an ally. His instructions are occasionally vague but if you give an honest effort you'll get an honest grade and you'll learn much more than you paid for.

Public Speaking with Professor Hughes is a MUST! I started the semester terrified and walked out with a great sense of accomplishment. He is an awesome professor and person. This is the only class I can say I actually learned in and enjoyed!

he's kind of flamboyant... but a nice and smart guy. he can be funny at times as well. lets say that his public speaking class wasn't the most conventional... here were times when we had to stand up and do "vowel dances"... no joke. the wrok load is a bi above average bu if u you stick with it you will actually learn a lot

He's going to scare you every now and then. Sometimes you may have no idea if you're doing the assignment right but he's there to help when you need it. you may need to email him three or four times though. He's funny too, you won't fall asleep in his class. Just keep up with all the work and you'll do fine

I have put of taking this class because I strongly dislike English. A former student recommended that I take Professor Hughes class, so I registered. I was expecting it to be another boring English class, but it was not. Professor Hughes made every class fun and I did not want the semester to end. I highly recommend his class.

The class was very interesting from the beginning. The thought process displayed by Professor Hughes is uncommon in the teaching world. He really makes students think outside of the box. Awesome!!! Once again HHC has come up with a course to help you re-visit your academic skills and bring them to college level. If you have little interest in English, and are not very good at it. Then Eng101 workshop is the class to take. Prof. Hughes will help you go from one word, one idea, to a MLA format paper, but you have to put the work in.

He is one of the best English teachers I have ever had. He was dramatic and goes deep into the text and makes you think. But if you are one of those students who doesn't like to take the challenge and do the needed work then you wont pass the class. I definitely loved Kirk's class. The tags I used do not show his teaching skills justice. He is PHENOMENAL. He gives everyone the help needed to improve. However, you do have to work for it. If i can pass with an "A" anyone can. If you want to learn then pick his class. If your looking to just pass with a "C" then pick a different professor. Kirk pushes everyone for "A" work. Kirky is an amazing professor. He pushes you to exceed past college level. At first he seems like a very hard teacher, but in reality he just likes scaring he's students. Kirk assigns Lit-Journal entries almost every night, also there are three essay assignments. However, the first and second essays are practice runs for the third. Although this class is challenging it is amazing. If you want to learn from someone who will push you towards greatness take the Captain! Don't be scarrrrred!

He's very entertaining, if you decide to take his class I hope you like surprises because you never know what to expect. Journal entries are easy and he collects them towards the end of the semester so you got time to stall on some but if you put it off too long they will add up. He also posts homework assignment ahead of time and very detailed.

Started this class not knowing anything about writing. Professor Hughes really helped.. This was by far one of the best class I have taken. I absolutely LOVED this teacher. He was helpful and encouraged no judgement. I had him for Public Speaking and he completely took everyone out of their comfort zone which actually made the class a great one! We had four presentations, two of which were with a group. No quizzes or tests. Just participate! NEVER COME LATE TO HIS CLASS!

This teacher is great for a beginner student . This teacher really helps with organizing your ideas in writing . He is also a very nice man and is accepting of differences . I am able to be open about having Asperger's with this professor . This is not true with every professor . We have our political differences but he is a good professor . .

Professor Hughes is thorough in his analysis of your work. He encourages you to explore your thinking capacity and to write the extra ordinary. There's nothing ordinary about his writing. He's very hilarious. He's also a professor you are able to communicate with outside of the class.

Great class. Prof. is wonderful, caring. He knew when to be serious and not. Very helpful. We had daily writing for 10 minutes. Essays were family stories/narratives. Great conversations and class discussions. If you do your work, you'll be fine. Draft and rewrite when you write something you don't like that much. I enjoyed class very much.

If you attend most classes it's pretty hard to fail. He will practically make sure you have the class challenging you to do your best work. His lectures are hilarious and insightful. Professor Kirk Hughes is like a gun, you have to respect the power he holds. When you join his class, you'll feel very welcomed. The work he gives out will not be extremely hard, but you have to manage your time correctly. With the work he has given out, I really feel my writing skills have improved over nine thousand times.

Capt Kirk is by far out of the box, a lot of reading and discussions, you will seem lost during most of the class but it all makes sense... BIG on MLA, do your LIT journals, and you'll be fine. If you expect clear cut grading and need structure, do not take his class. He is willing to go above and beyond for you if you show your trying.

Kirk is a great guy. He has great energy and one can't help but absorb some of it. Public speaking wasn't traditional. There were mainly short assignments done in a note book combined with presentations. Do the homework and try your best with the speeches and you'll pass. He understands not all of us are great speakers. Would take him again.

There is a lot or writing in his class, and I'm sure that there will be many essays to come in the future. also if you don't do the work he will give you a drop form to fill out and drop the class! so if you take him be prepared and be ready to work hard

Captain Kirk is the best . He is more then just a teacher but is also a mentor.

Ive always been terrible at English and received bad grades in every English class Ive taken. This is the only English class in which I feel benefited me. Although it is the most work Ive done for a class ever, this is the best teacher Ive ever had.

One of the most friendly and helpful professors that I have yet to find! His Public Speaking course truly allowed me to come "out of my shell", and become comfortable with embarrassment (beware the vowel dance!). I ran in an election for president of one of the school's clubs, and feel that I would not have won, were it not for this course! Great!!

I took Kirt for English 101 Workshop . On the fist day I knew this professour was going to be good and interesting . He told us that the only one to ever get an A in his English 101 class was a student named Rowel . Then I got an A in his class .

Captain Kirk is a very nice man and a great professors he makes learning fun if you have questions he will take time to explain everything to you and when we are learning something new he takes his time and goes threw it till you get it he cares about his students and wants everyone to pass and will work with you to make sure you do good

I took English 102 last semester 2018 with prof. Kirk Hughes. He is very knowledgeable, smart and great professor. He has an awesome personality. Amazing teacher... he really cares about his students and his calss is always fun, exciting to go to. There is alot of work but it is not that bad if you stay on top of it it actually is just reading and doing journal entries... super easyy. He is one of the best professors at housatonic. There are about 4 speeches that you have to do throughout the semester. For the final you have to memorize a recitation and talk about it. He gives a ton of extra credit and is impossible to fail his class. Put in the work and you will get an A. Do the vowel dance you will get an A

Captain Kirk is a real gem. After having received a Bachelor's and taking his course for credits to apply to grad school, I can easily say that Professor Hughes is one of the best professors I have had in my collegiate career. He expects a lot from you and you read a lot, but he is the kind of teacher that will be by your side every step of the way

Mr. Hughes was a nice professor I enjoy taking English 102 with him. he's really not a hard teacher as long as you try your best you will do well so you will pass your class. The books that we read for her class was different something I never really read about before. Which was relationships of the same sex. But the class was great.

Professor Hughes is a very unique, yet astounding professor in public speaking COM173. His ability to make it a socially interactive learning environment allows for growth within and outside the classroom. Extra credit is offered at almost every class, or if not every class then every other time. Overall, a great hilarious experience.

Professor Hughes uses his wide range of intellect in literature to expand his knowledge of love and literature to the class. The texts read throughout the semester demonstrate that purpose and meaning can be found even in the most complex of texts, which may be be perceived by many as outdated. Deep class discussions occur on a weekly basis.

Kirk is honestly one of the most amazing professors that I've had. He's such a down to earth person and he listens which is a big thing. He wants you to do great but if you don't show up it'll be hard. He is also pretty funny and you'll enjoy coming to class which is rare in college. I am happy that I had him and I hope to have him in the future.

Going back to school as an adult is challenging, but Professor Hughes made it fun, entertaining, and educational. Of course, I could only speak for myself, but if you stick it out and do what he requires of you, he is a fair and knowledgeable Professor. His lessons are based on material which I found interesting but if you're boring and homophobic you'll be bothered. Missing class is not an option, especially for the first couple classes. hes a professor you'll always be able to go back to if u need help. he's like a counselor and friend. Best professor ever. Super funny and makes the class interesting. He jokes a lot but when it comes time to get work done then you have to be ready to give your all. If you have anxiety about public speaking then get ready to be thrown out there. He will push you out your comfort zone to make sure you succeed in public speaking.

From the first day of class, I knew I was going to like Captain Kirk but I was not expecting the work load. He only gives challenging work because he believes in his students. Very heavy on formatting and if you're homophobic and close-minded, don't take the class. One of the most amazing professors but if you want an A or just to pass, SHOW UP.

Professor Hughes aka Captain Krik was one of the best professor I've had in HCC. Although, he may give alot of reading assignments he puts in alot of effort to make sure you understand everything. You can tell he truly cares about his students. You won't be disappointed!

Captain Kirk was one of the best professors I had Fall 2019. It was an intense class because of the high energy, but it helped wake me up for my next class and work that day. I believe Kirk truly cares for his students and he makes it easy to sit through his class. Just make sure you don't let the online assignments pile up too much.

He's definitely one of the more "out there" professors in the way he has you learn. Yes, there are the usual lectures and readings, but the in-class participation events are where his lessons really stick with you. There's a lot of moving around, public speaking, and/or peer reviewing. All of these help you understand the texts better.

I enjoyed taking this class, even though I was only able to experience the class online. He definitely made sure we were able to understand with very detailed video assignments from him and written descriptions as well. I say show up to all classes, do all assignments the exact way he wants it and homeworks and follow his useful tips :)

Kirk is the man I took his World Lit class and was very pleased by how well organized it was due to covid and distance learning! I highly recommend Kirk but only if youre willing to put in you 2 cents as well he doesnt just handout good grades!

Professor Hughes was great! I learned a lot of great stuff about public speaking and I think I've become a much better speaker over the semester. We were also exposed to some great literature and speakers. Hughes is also very active in the school and got me into the honors program and is the most accessible professor out of class I've had yet.

I have taken 3 classes over the last 3 years with Captain Kirk, and each of them are filled with so much laughter. He remains the BEST professor I have ever had throughout my college career. There are a lot of reading, and writing as do most english classes, but his charismatic ways brighten everything up. Don't hesitate to enroll in his class.

Kirk was awesome. He really cared for his students. I had him as an online class, so videos were long but its all well expected as an online class. Papers arent too bad and neither are the readings. My biggest problems were professors not answering my emails, but he was really on top of it.

Professor Kirk has an incomparable, genuine, and outstanding way of teaching and interacting with his students; makes you feel he really is on your side to support your learning, and succeed with your class. During the course he helped all of us to develop critical thinking and generate ideas at college level students.

Cap'n Kirk definitely knows his stuff. A great orator and lecturer, I always looked forward to his weekly videos. Lots of reading and writing assigned, but it's good content and as long as you do the assignments, you're almost guaranteed to get at the very least most of the credit.

I had Kirk for Public speaking online and i would take his class again in an instant. I learned so much and since the class was on a schedule (in a way) it made things a whole lot easier.

There' s not enough words to describe Capt'n Kirk. He's an amazing, caring, funny professor. I always look forward to his homework videos which explains what needs to be done. He answer emails no matter what time it is. Do the homework's, the Discussions, Essays midterm on blackboard, and you will pass etc. Take him and you'll be happy you did.

However his online zoom meeting was fantastic! I'm urging him to do more for the future students. To future students : take this class.

I loved this Professor and his teaching in World Lit! I enjoyed the flexibility of due dates for every assignment posted each week. It was a fun experience, I liked learning lots of new words, and the Analect readings were my favorite. The video lectures were very helpful as well. He should continue them for future students that are fully-online.

Great prof. It was an asynchronous course so there were no mandatory class times he just posted short lectures. His instructions under his assignments were very detailed and answered any questions. While there were a lot of readings, he gave suggestions that made them bearable and the assignments were easy & doable. Seems like a really cool guy too

I took the public speaking course. The information in this course is solid. The deeper you invest yourself into the material the more meaningful it can be in your life. It all depends on the level of commitment you are ready to make. There are quite a few assignments weekly, but it's tasteful. He doesn't teach just the material, but good habits.

Made the class fun. Captain Hughes really was an amazing professor, he always helped students with there classwork.

I've taken Professor Hughes' Public Speaking class last semester. And honestly, the class was beyond easy, and you don't have to spend any extra money trying to get materials. On top of that, Professor Hughes himself is one to enjoy the things he does, which, in my opinion, brings up class morale. He's a great professor and an overall great person!

Captain Kirk has so far been my favorite Professor in college. He ads great amounts of support to an otherwise daunting topic, especially for some people like me with social anxiety. He is very understanding when it comes to late work and is not too harsh of a grader as he tries to make himself seem! Cool I guess!

Also, he will try to get you out of your shell to talk if you have social anxiety but he won't pressure at all. He makes the class very fun and enjoyable. I would never leave a review for any teacher but when u meet Captain Kirk you will have to because he has made a huge impact on me. I was on the verge of just giving up on school, I failed this class last semester and I passed because he made sure our class question were being answered. Best teacher everrrrrrr

The best professor that I have had in my various years of college learning.

Dr. use has been critical in the way. He has helped me to better myself as well as my skills in English. This is my second class with him and I wish I could always have an English class with Dr. years as there is no other experience quite like it.

He is a really great professor and very hilarious. We had multiple assignments but we did it on our own time. Then we had to turn in the Speaker's Notebook at the end of the class and a final essay. We were doing work in class but it didn't feel like that way. He always found a way to make the class fun and got us all involved & he knew our names.

Capt'n Kirk made public speaking more than bearable, and quite fun. The assignments aren't difficult, he offers many opportunities for extra credit, and is incredibly supportive during presentations. He's able to create a very hospitable environment in the classroom. Take him for public speaking!

This professor brings learning from the hand outs to a 3D experience which really gives context and a deeper understanding to World Ancient Literature. Brilliant!

Fantastic Professor with a wonderful approach to public speaking. At first you may be somewhat put off by his eclectic personality, high energy, and whimsical class activities, but once it gets going, you'll be having a ton of fun. And this is not without reason. Every activity has solid theory behind it, which will help you learn.

Mr. Hughes is an amazing teacher. There are a lot of fun moments, there's some things that will make you feel embarrassed but it's an amazing learning opportunity. The workload isn't hard and there is a lot of time to complete the assignments. He is also a very understanding person in general.
