He knows his stuff, and his tests are fairly easy, but when it comes to the final essay, which is supposed to be your interpretation of a painting, he deducts marks if he does not agree with your description.
Does he ever know his stuff! He's also very understanding.
I loved his class! It made my mind up about majoring in art history! He expects you to know a lot of info, but he makes everything very interesting. His exams are very long though, so try to buget your time well.
A charming, nuanced man with excellent lectures. His tests are long answer but very fair. The class is very interesting and his study guide are fantastic. A wonderful class.
He certainly knows what he is talking about and definitely loves talking about it too. Great to have someone so passionate about art. Honestly one of the most interesting characters I have ever met.
Marlow is a snappy dresser, that man has more ties than Imelda deMarcos has shoes! If you write down everything he says you will do well.He gives lots of quotes and little known details about art history that make the class great. Very helpful and a giggler.
knows his stuff very well. his tests are long but he only tests on material that he's discussed in class. going to class is very helpful because he tests on lectures, not the text. if you attend class regularly and try, you will do good.
Kirk is so fascinating. Such a snob and a socially awkward person, but I love him. He knows his stuff very well and his tests are extremely nitpicky. I cannot tell you how hard I had to study to get an A. But I learned!
Absolutely dreadful.Ignores questions or comments from students, constantly faces the slides rather than look at the class. He takes weeks to mark papers despite the fact that he takes 15% off if its even one day late.On his exams expects every possible detail about the slide, without considering time.
AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE ... as stated below, he ignores comments and questions ... the "essay" you have to write is a complete joke - "how does this painting make you feel?" and if he doesn't agree with you, you're screwed. if you have to take an art history class, take it with Santa-Balazs instead.
Not a good prof to have. All the comments about ignoring are more than true.

Facing the board while talking rather quietly makes his lectures a little frusterating. But if you listen carefully and write everything down this class is super interesting and you can do really good! 50min classes win cuz your hand is still kinda alive by the end. Dont fall asleep, b/c that will make you fail! A good memory is key!!!

as a person, the guy is a complete jerk. but he is very knowledgable, and fair (if you pay attention). sit near the front and right down EVERYTHING.
The class is interesting though he tends to teach mostly from the book. He shows some of his own slides so it's good to know he's experienced, but he fails to address students. The paper is fun if you enjoy English and are creative.
i think he is a great teacher... you have to pay attention in class but thats kind of a given when your test is on picture retention.he is very helpful if you have a problem or issue with something. i really liked him, he was also really funny and knew every artist studied so well.
he's a really bitter guy.
His exams are very hard and very detailed. They consist of two parts, 3-4essay questions and around 30slide id questions with MC for each one. One must write down everything he says in class. Punishes one for using the textbook too much, as he admits that he disagrees with the author too many times.
This class is not the most interesting and Marlow makes it so much worse. It is as if he doesn't want anyone to do well. He quickly goes through slides, doesn't answer any questions and has very hard exams and questions. Worst class of my life.
I was really interested in this class BUT the teacher blew it for me. I highly reccomend you take this class with someone else!!! This guy doesn't answer students with their hands up, talk about RUDE. Just get into another Profs class and avoid this Prof as much as possible!!!
I absolutely love this class and Kirk as a prof. I took 102 last semester and 101 this semester, you do have to work hard and study but isn't that the point of college.I had an issue with an exam and went to him for help, he explained exactly what I needed to do and I raised my mark 25% on the next essay. He is fantastic, really knows his stuff,
very, very specific marker for every essay there are about 10 words you cannot use. Also for every exam he tests you on about 120 slides (he randomly picks 40) where you have to memorize the title, name, period and location.
If you want to do well in this class you have to have a certain level of interest. There is an extreme amount of info that you MUST know to do well. I enjoyed Marlow... He definately knows what he is talking about. He is to the point but also very particular. You cannot miss a class because he bases all exams on class notes.
Awsome class. Bad teacher. Avoid towers like the plauge be4 his class trust me. slide show exam is very tuff even if u study. helps alot to make flashcards.dont put ur hand up in his class, you will not get a response out of him. Also dont ask him if he needs some cold medecine for his cough, he does not like that at all.sit at front=good.
I loved This class. Kirk is an amazing professor, who is very passionate about what he teaches. He makes every lesson interesting and gets quite into what he is talking about. He answers questions at the end of classes. Pay attention, take notes and attend and you'll do phenomenal!
I really enjoyed this class! Marlow is very passionate about Art history and knows his material very well. It wasn't the easiest class, but if you attend every lecture you will do fine. His tests are based on all his lecture notes; the text is more of a template. As for his term papers, he marks them quite critically but will help if you need it.
This class is almost all about memorization. I found that this prof taught me nothing of true value but simply how to remember 80-some works of art for each exam. He is an extremeley hard marker and sets very high standards for papers and exams. Did not enjoy his style of teaching at all.
LOTS of memorization! He gives you the information you need to do well on the tests, but you have to be in EVERY class to take notes about everything he says. The essay assignments are not too bad if you prove you put a lot of though into it. Interesting class, but hard tests!
He was one of my favourite teachers at Grant Mac. As long as you attend every class, study hard and be creative with your essay, it's a great class. He'll help you anytime you want! I loved this class and him teaching it made it even better.
The worst teacher Grant MacEwan has to offer! If you can avoid him as a teacher. He's not understanding of students problems. Doesn't give enough time to ask questions in class.
Memorize everything. The book is huge, and it's a lot of info in a short amount of time to learn about. He knows his stuff, and he uses pictures of art/architecture that he took himself, but the class was boring, and he didn't answer student's questions. Once the lights dimmed, and his monotone voice started, it was hard to stay awake.
This man hates students, it's just a warning. he knows his material and can talk forever. It just seems like he really hates teaching and your just wasting his time. it's to bad really.
If he sees you making an effort, like going to see him during office hours, it seems like he takes it a little easier on you. Friendly guy outside of class. He keeps notes so his lectures are organized, but it makes things a little monotonous. He doesn't accept excuses, so make sure you go to class and get things done on time.
Very interested in what he teaches. Great mind, but you have to keep up with him. If you pre-organize your notes into sections according to eras, his class becomes very easy and likeable. He doesn't look for hands, though, so don't expect to be able to ask questions until the end. Makes his course interesting, I really liked him.
found it very difficult to stay awake during his lectures.the only time he will answer questions i found is if you go see him during his ofice hours, he wont answer questions in class.hard marker.you basically have to interpret things the exact same way he does to got a good mark in this class.
Marlow has to be the worst teacher I have ever had. His class is so boring unless you really find these works of art interesting. I hardly ever attented his class but that's because I recieved the notes from another student who previously took his class the semester before me. I recommend if you take this course get a different prof!!!
Didn't find him very helpful outside of class - he was rather cold and disinterested, however, his class is interesting and well organized.
Is a great prof! Yes this class is boring, and yes he is monotone but its not hard. He talks and you write. If you write decent notes then between those and the text books you should be able to write the essays no problem. Is a fair marker. helpful if you talk to him outside of class, also marks a bit easier if he sees your making an effort.
Get out now. This was was my least favorite class. He quotes the text book constantly, it's always what the author said not what he said. He treats like your children, no respect at all. Very very anal i was docked marks for bending a picture he cut out of a magazine. can't answer questions in class. Bad marker his system idiotic
Horrible professor! His lectures are extremely boring and I found it hard to stay awake in class. Although the term paper was easy I found it to be a complete waste of time and gained absolutely nothing from it. He has a bad temper and can easily be annoyed as was shown when someone in the class got up to use the washroom and he would not let her.
I love Marlow! yes it is all lectures time, but thats about the only way to teach art history, yes he is anal about coming in late, leaving during class, but really, come on your paying for your education, you should value it. and value his time, he is here to teach and does a very good job, he know what he is talking about, and very approachable.
Horrible prof. He seems disinterested with his students. Granted, he is knowlegable in this course, but the passion to teach it to others? Non-existant. Very monotone. Very dry classes. I skipped a majority of my classes. The term paper? Cool idea, but ripped my paper and ideas to nothing. If you are thinking of taking this course ... don't.
Terrible ...I refuse to dignify him with the title of Professor!Extremely rude and awkward(he didn't even introduce himself 1st class),and he made no effort to get to know his students.I took this course from him 3yrs ago and it was a nightmare:chews you up maliciously on your papers and can be nasty to you when you visit his office.Classless!!!!!!
The most ANAL man I ever met! Stubborn in his believes and believes that everyone should perceive art HIS way! AVOID AT ALL COSTS!! ...of course E. Beauchamp isn't much better so it's hard sometimes. Felt like I was in Jr. High again
I liked him a lot. It depends what kind of student you are as well. I went to EVERY single class, listened, and wrote down what he said. For the term paper I had NO idea what to do and I went to him for help. He read over my paper and have me tips to improve on.
The most arrogant professor I ever encountered! He lectures on and on but has a one-way point of view when it comes to art. He favours students that attend every class and basically repeat after him and have absolutely no opinions or objections. Very dull, close-minded and ignorant. His exams and marking are absurd. Stay away, far away.
Dr. Marlow is the worst teacher I have had at Grant MacEwan, so far. He is not engaging. He doesn't answer questions during class. He doesn't look at the class. He is monotone. He doesn't give notes or any handouts to the class. I dropped the class within a month. I am a very good student but probably would have failed if I would have stayed
I really like the class, but all the other comments about his attitude toward students is true. He told me point-blank that I was going to fail, and I think that's purely due to the way he marks. I"m doing rather well.
He's a great teacher if you're willing to put in the work. The best strategy is to go to every single class, pay attention and write down everything he says. Preparing for exams is a lot of memorizing and note organizing, but its not impossible. And the term paper is easy. He will scale everyone's marks up on the first midterm to boost confidence.
WORST PROF EVER!!! He is so rude. He will yell at you when you go to his office for help. He is TOO ANAL when marking his term papers. Should have dropped the class when i had a chance.
His class is a typical university lecture all he does is talk and you have to write evrything he says there is no notes the textbook helps a bit but he wants you to write what he says for ur notes and the tests. u have to be a dedicated student to get at least a B.
memorize images as u learn them do not try to memorize them the night before especially the ones for the final. if you didnt do so good on the assignment paper or the midterm he asks that you see him in his office. positive note- he knows his stuff i recommed writing everything he says a laptop or a recorder will help especially for the essay exam
Just do what you're supposed to: go to class, pay attention instead of playing games on your computer, don't talk during the lecture,go talk to him if you need to, write lot's of notes (you'll need them) and you'll be fine. He knows his stuff and is passionate about it. Be a good student and he'll be fair.
I honestly could not stand this prof. Classes were SO boring. Absolutely no class interaction, and didn't pay attention to questions most of the time. Exam essays are brutally marked. Everything about him annoyed me, especially his voice and how he coughed all the time.
WORST PROFESSOR I'VE EVER HAD !!! i took two classes with him and that was the biggest mistake of my academic career. do not take his class. i belittle's students and refused to help after my term paper which he butchered. Term paper - 8-10 pages... BRUTAL
He is extremely anal. When I went to see him in his office hours he was completely unhelpful and unresponsive. His tests and assignments however, are fair. He tells you exactly what he expects from you and exactly what you have to know. He marks pretty fairly.
Worthy challenge. I loved it so much I took 102 with him the next sem. Attend every class and take thorough notes, study/memorize the art as you learn it. Gives you the q's for the written exam a week ahead. Study your notes and read the assigned chapters and you will be fine. Prep your term paper in adv. Majoring in art history because of him.
such an unpleasant guy, knows his stuff but he doesn't want to be there. completely turned me off to art history.
Hated his class so much. His cough drove me insane, he powered through material way too fast and rarely answered any lectures during class. Only time he seemed semi-useful was when I saw him in his office. Very anal marker, especially when it came to the term paper. Attend every lecture and bring a voice recorder if you can.
He knows his stuff and you definately get the feeling that he loves art history. Don't miss any classes unless you can get detailed notes from someone. Lots of info to know, lots of memorization, but it's doable. The lectures can be hard to sit through, but I find the content interesting. He's very thorough and gives essay questions ahead of time.
I had class in the morning and stayed awake just fine to those complaining. Yes he does talk all class but hes very knowledgeable about the subject. Extensive notes and attending every class makes passing this course is very doable. He makes it clear what he wants on the exams but I did find his term paper to be more difficult
I will never take his class again. I am an arts major and his class was unbearable. If you're in his class make sure you show up because using images from your textbook will cost you about 20%
Taking art 101 with Kirk started off interesting because he is a teacher than lectures the entire class. He does not really give you much to go off of. Through out the course though I began to understand what he wanted on his exams and I am taking art 102 as well with him just to get a good grade for transferring school. He is boring but bearable.
As long as you show up for class and use his documents as reference during the lectures you should do fine. His exams are fairly easy if you do well on the written portion. There is a lot of memorization for the names of the art but other than that this course is easy.
Horrible teacher. By far the worst class I have ever taken. Boring lectures and he has a demeaning negative attitude. Acts as if her is the smartest human being alive but is truely clueless on how to actually teach. He knows alot about art history but is horrible at passing the information on to students. Avoid his class if you can!!!! Terrible
This class was extremely easy. As long as you show up to class and write down everything he says, you don't even have to read the textbook. Just memorize the pictures and make sure you prepare the essay questions he gives you beforehand.
This professor was very clear with what he expected on exams, meaning that you needed to come to class and take notes to use on your essay. His lectures were way more interesting than having to read the book and he was very passionate about the details of the art we studied. He asks if anyone has questions and is ready to help. Would recommend!!
He is extremely enthusiastic and knows exactly what he is talking about. He is clear with what he wants of you. Show up to all the classes write everything he says and study HIS notes and you'll pass with flying colours. Don't go off of just the textbook go off of his notes! You'll do fantastic if you just listen to him.
He lectures the entire class, and is not fond of interruptions, so it's in your best interest to save questions for his office hours. He is very knowledgeable and passionate about the subject. Not the most enthusiastic instructor, but if you have an interest in the subject matter, he's the prof you'll want teaching you. Exams are heavily weighted.
I absolutely love this man! His lectures are quite long, so be prepared to take a lot of notes - you WILL need them, as his exams come directly from his notes NOT the textbook. He is super quirky, and obviously loves art. He doesn't like when people talk in class, or walk around, but if you gain his respect, the course is a breeze.
Lectures are extremely boring, he talks the entire class and doesn't give anyone an opportunity to ask questions. He also doesn't put the names of the art on the screen so its really hard to keep track of which piece is which. Although he does give you the essay questions for the tests before hand which is really helpful.
Let's put it this way. He cancelled a class because 1 of 2 projectors were broken and he couldn't "compare" images together (something that he could have easily done). Frustrating and dull.
Loved this class. His passion for the art and its history made the lectures interesting and engaging. He lectures for the entire class and taking detailed notes is essential to doing well on the exams, however I found his lectures interesting and organized so this wasn't an issue. Enjoyed his sense of humour. Don't skip, take notes, easy A.
You have to attend every single class, the exam is based on them not the textbook. You don't even really need the textbook. He's nice but you will kill your hand every class writing notes. 2 midterms & the final. The class is pretty interesting and he gives the right mix of art and history, you will leave his class with an appreciation for art.
I love Kirk Marlow! Very interesting classes and such a nice guy. Make sure you attend classes because the tests are based on his lectures and the textbook. If you pay attention and write notes, you will breeze through this course!
While he's a very nice person, and responds to emails in a timely manner, I really disliked his lectures. All he did all class was talk and talk, with one boring picture after another. While I did well, he didn't even attempt to make it exciting, and if you missed even one class you would be screwed because all his exams have to be from his words.
Very organized and well presented lectures. If you attend them, you'll do exceptionally well. If you skip, you'll end up doing a lot of unnecessary reading (unless you want to). Prof. Marlow is fantastic - witty and very caring, too. A real wordsmith! I thoroughly enjoyed and looked forward to his 8:00AM class.
Marlow was hands down probably my favourite prof at MacEwan. I found this lectures to be consistently captivating. His lecture style isn't interactive which I loved. He just talks to you and you take notes. The exams were very straightforward and if you knew what you're talking about it's very easy to do well. Made it worth being at school at 8 am!
Super nice guy, very responsive to emails. However he will break your hands with notes. Talks nonstop, and fast. Doesn't write anything down so you have to cross-reference the terms list, image list, and your notes while trying to transcribe everything he says. DO NOT miss a class, and don't buy the text. You can google all images using his list.
Dr Marlow talks ALOT but his lectures are enjoyable and engaging so its somewhat of a nonissue. If you pay attention in class, read the book, and memorize the required images its a pretty low effort A.
Great prof for people like me who enjoy lectures that are not so interactive. Best way to take his class is to either record his lectures or write/type fast as he talks rapidly and nonstop. Tests are super easy as he gives essay questions beforehand and you just have to memorize 4 or 5 aspects of the paintings. Easy A if you take good notes.
Kirk is a real solid prof, I thought this would be a boring class but he makes it a lot of fun. 2 midterms and final, tells you exactly what will be on it so you're always prepared. Basically, show up, write the important stuff down, study for the midterm and it'll be a breeze. 10/10 recommend and would take again
Kirk was a great professor. The class consisted of 2 midterms and a final so it was a great class to take just to get your fine art requirement. There is a lot of notes but as long as you put in the work to memorize the pieces and get the gist of their themes, it is an easy A. I would definitely take this class again.
Mr. Marlow is my fav prof! He is nice and helpful whenever I need to clarify something. He responds to email well. DONT MISS A CLASS. Go to every lecture. Go over the terminologies. Overall, I love his class and I'd definitely take it again.
such an amazing professor! the classwork is a little heavy and you defiantly need to be a pro at intensive memorization but he was such a joy! Easy A long as you can type fast and memorize hard.
Professor Marlow is a sweet guy, however in lectures he quickly talked and went through slides on his PowerPoint of the paintings. Thinking this class would be an easy GPA booster, I was wrong! Its hard to keep notes on every image because he talks so fast and doesnt write anything on the board. Lots of memorization. Dont take if possible.
I loved him. Go to every class and write down exactly what he says as that is what he will be looking for while grading you. He talks very fast so be prepared to type fast, but this helped me to pay attention. I loved this style of teaching. Be ready to memorize for testing but he is very understandable when marking. Respect him, he is so sweet.
