Makes class fun and understanding. He's easy to talk to. But you'll have to work hard for an A. Lots of info to know
Olsen's test are strictly from the notes, so take good notes (make sure you understand them also)! Expect him to go off on a tangent during class time; he likes to lecture his bio students on becoming role model students at the UC/CSU level.

Very good professor.Just study your notes and you will get an A.The test comes from the notes. You will have to work for an A, and he pushes you to do the effort. Very stern, but cool guy to talk with. Has a lot of good advice that he's willing to share. Learned how to really study from his class.

A very good professor.
Very smart guy, knows his stuff, STUDY THE NOTES if you want an A. All his tests come from the notes. Not a difficult class but A LOT of info to learn. I learned a lot and highly recommend him. He pushes you to do well.
Good teacher. Learned a lot from him. He gives you study guide and it helps. Never got anything lower than a B on tests. I never read just studied the noted and I did well. I ended up getting a B but for my absences. He is a good teacher

Dr. Olsen is a passionate professor. He pushes you to strive in life and especially in your studies. DON'T be late, attend ALL lectures/labs, take good notes and you will succeed in his class. Lots of memorization; 20 amino acid structures, Kreb cycle, Glycolysis, Transcription/Translation - but for a good reason. I highly recommend him.
Dr. Olsen is a good professor. he shows great enthusiasm in his work and passes that on to students. the classes he teaches are very interesting. i personally think that olsen only knows his stuff but when you ask about science outside his field, he is not that knowledgable. he emphasizes on research but when actually helping you get one, he islazy
He knows his material but you have to be in his class to learn.
Olsen is a good prof.He is a lot of work though. if u want to get an A or B you have to be in class and be able to memorize his notes from top to bottom. With him u have to know the correct order of everything and know all the structures or amino acids and kreb's cycle. his free response section on test are sometimes hard. u better review u'r notes
PROFESSOR OLSEN IS A GREAT TEACHER. ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS TAKE GOOD NOTES ON EVERYTHING HE SAYS IN LECTURE AND YOU'RE SURE TO PASS HIS CLASS WITH A GOOD GRADE. HE IS FAIR AND EASY, AS LONG AS YOU PAY ATTENTION.
Dr. Olsen is a great professor, show up to his class on time.(Or be ready to get reprimanded in front of the class.)He reviews ALL the information which will be cover in the any exam. Take really good notes and you will pass the class. OH! and if I remember correctly… “Proteins are chains of amino acids…” Something to that effect…
Dr. Olsen always motivates you to do your best, he's a wonderful professor but he's not easy. You do have to put in a great amount of work in order to earn an A. He wouldn't have it any other way. He is very straight foward when it comes to the exams. So there is no tricks up his sleeve. Come to class everyday, take good notes and you should do wel
Absolutely the best teacher at ELAC! He may seem like a hard ass the first few days, but that is just an act :). He makes his bio majors work for an A, but his lectures are always clear! Take him, and push yourself further if you want to succeed when you transfer! For bio majors, pay special attention to Bio 6. That stuff will come back!
IF YOU STUDY HARD, YOU MAY GET A OR B. HE IS A GOOD TEACHER.
Super cool instructor. Take him, you will work your ass off for him. But, you earn your grade at the end. No Cheating allowed! Study, study, study. You will thank him after the class. He prepares you and motivates you to do your best. And your best ain't too bad! =)
He is clear, not tricky, and pushes you to study your butt off; what else can you ask for from a great professor? But be warned that you will be busy when tests come, especially in bio 7 when the practical comes... Good luck peeps!
Best teacher you can take if you actually want to learn something. Tells you what he will put on the exams. Seems like a lot of information to know but if you study the exams are very easy. Very helpful, must go to lec to understand the material. HIGHLY RECOMMEND THAT YOU TAKE HIM!!!
eesh this class was definitely not a walk in the park. olsen definitely knows his stuff but damn its a lot of material to cover and if he falls behind youre screwed because then its just a bunch of info thrown at you at once. NEED to study NEED to take notes NEED to know your bio well. good luck and have fun not sleeping during tests / finals.
well...he knows his stuff...but not easy if you can't remember all the notes from top to the bottom. for the exams...first part is MC, second part is short questions(it is not that short...be careful, recommend u study earlier). Need to remember amino acid structure because he loves amino acid...
I took him for 6,7, and 46 Genetics. I found him very engaging and helpful. He'll help all those who want to learn! High Praise! Need help he is there! Love the labs! Want to get in a research for the summer go to him! Great teacher recommended for bio majors! Come ready to learn!
hardest professor ever. he will give you a hard time even though you didn't do anything wrong. will give you a quiz on the wrong date from what he announces..we can't correct him because he think he is always right. I dropped out of his class during the first weeks of class. can't take anymore nonsense from him.
Olsen thinks that Biology and insects are what makes the world spin. He doesn't admit that physics or chemistry are far above this field and that the best requirement to pass is a good memory. He adds no spice to the material, is repetitive, and favors those students that kiss his a**. Patriotic, arrogant, and a big loud mouth. Far form the best.
no good.
Woah, in my experience (6, 7, 42) Dr. Olsen had never given quizzes on wrong dates, that's just not him. He is clear, and very specific about what he wants from his student, and there is no uncertainty in him. Yes, he expects a lot of materials known from students, but if you worked hard enough it's not impossible to Ace all his classes.
Great teaching, good learning
He's a great teacher. Everything on the notes is what's on the test. Just need a good memory to memorize the notes. You don't need the book at all. Supplemental hour is pointless, but hey it's free points towards your grade. Drops your lowest test and quiz grade. He really gets you involved with Biology stuff.
Olsen is the shiznit. He tells you what he wants from you and doesn't give you pointless information that you don't need to know about. I have a different perspective on life from a biological point of view, thanks to that man. He is a complete geek/ner and he does ramble. You need to take bio 6, take it with him, he'll make life easier for you.
He is very clear. Test is everything on lecture note. If you study hard, you would get A. You dont really need the book. Let you drop 2 quizzes and 1 test.
This is a good professor to take! No textbook is necessary, all his exams and quizzes are based on his lectures. He lectures on the most important things skips on the minor details. Just study and keep up with the work and you'll do great! (I got an A during his 5 wk anatomy course)
is most disorganized and touch. Work hard, take good notes and get an A
Best teacher ever. Test are based on his lectures notes only. no use of book. just memorize your toes and you will be fine. practical can get hard, make sure you spend as much time possible in lab so you know everything. theres 2 field trips that count as EC, that helps alot.
No textbook required for lecture tests. Lab tests are pretty tricky though
Wonderful Professor! He is very clear in teaching and a very fair grader.Great class overall!
Wonderful Professor overall!
Wonderful Professor overall!
All tests/quizs are from lecture notes very straight forward. If you want an easy A or B don't take him. If you want learn something and build strong foundation for your future science classes take him. Lab tests are short answers not multiple choice. A "B" in his class is like an "A" in other class. Great professor.
Wonderful professor with your best interest at heart. I've never worked so hard for a C! But i don't at all regret it, if needed can retake the class with someone else and easily get an A. You will definitely learn, work hard, sleep less, and if u do get an A! Wow! you're un-stoppable
If you're looking for an easy A, this is definitely not the class for you. Dr. Olsen will make you work harder than any other science class, but it's well worth it. All I can say is memorize everything. The lab tests are so much harder than lecture, so I'd focus more of my time on lab material.
Dr. Olsen is the best biology teacher ever. He is loves teaching biology. I really enjoyed having him as my teacher for bio 6 & 7, and I am planning to take genetics with him as well. He is not an easy teacher so you really have to study hard to get an A. I would recommend anyone interested in taking bio to take it with him.
I'm taking Dr. Olsen for Bio 003 and I have to say he comes off mean at first but he's a good instructor! He can be very arrogant but I enjoy his class very much. Not an easy class, you have to work hard, but then again this is college! Take him!
The course covers a great deal of material, therefore studying can be time consuming but he'll never throw a curveball. Lab exams are about 2x more challenging than lecture exams. Has high expectations of his students but only because he truly wants you to succeed. Always willing to help you out but initiative starts with you.
he's straight forward, all exams are based of his lecture notes. Study groups are definitely helpful. You get your final grade based on all the test. no hw, proj. etc. He's great, and knows his material. He's better than the other anatomy teachers.
Not an easy class but he is very helpful. He is clear in his lecture and knows what he is doing.
I feel compelled to write about Dr. Olsen because he's probably the best professor I've had. You will learn and build a solid foundation in the medical career you're pursuing if you take him. Highly recommended but definitely not if you're expecting an easy A or to fill a GE course. He's the best, period! Take him, and don't get the book! :)
Wow mr olsen class kicked me in the rear lol! but man he is the best professor I have ever had in my entire college years. If your serious about your nursing major take him! Its a tough class, but at least you will learn. I love Mr. Olsen... he really made me believe that I could actually learn anatomy! great professor!
Great professor. He will make you work really hard to earn your grade. Labs are extremely important since his practicums are on them. Lecture notes are key for his quizes and midterms. He will give you everything you need to study but its your responsibility to learn it. It takes time. Dedicate time and effort and you will do fine.
Initially came off as a mean stickler kind of guy but he's actually quite nice and funny and more importantly, a very good teacher. This class is all memorization. You'll do well if you put in the effort. I also love that book use is not required at all and that the organization of his lectures make studying a breeze. His exams aren't bad either.
Really good, tells you exactly what he wants you to know for the test so you don't need to learn info that's irrelevant and tests are based off his lectures. Lectures are very thorough, he's one of the best professors I ever had. It's not easy to get an A but if you put the time in studying, it's not that hard.
Great Professor! He makes clear explanations and straight to the point. He lectures only what he will test you on, Study the notes well and the test will be a breeze for you. I took the class for summer and survived lol! He is also a fun teacher, class is not boring!
What a wonderful professor! I learned so much in his class; he prepared me well. Lecture exams were straightforward, and his lectures were very interesting and clear. Practicals were very challenging, but equally thrilling. Memorization and repetition are key to earning a good grade in this class. Take him! You won't regret it.
If you only care about the credits/units, take biology elsewhere because this class requires quite a bit of time and effort. The morning supplementary hour and the massive time gaps in between lab and lecture sucked. But if you can get past that and you want a good education, take this class! He's a quality guy. Here's a chili pepper.
He is a great teacher, very passionate. You must attend and take his notes. No book used and test all based on his lecture notes. Lab is basically learning on your own but very easy to ask him questions. Just do what he says and you will pass!
Great prof. Makes you work hard for your grade but well worth it. You learn alot in this class through lecture notes no book use. Very helpful and great experience.
Amazing instructor!!! Goes based off of his notes no textbook required.. there's a lot to know but he's really good at what he teaches so if you study you'll be fine. He prepares you for physiology, his notes helped me in my physio class.olsen rocks!
Truly a great professor! Attendance is a must in his class because tests are strictly based on lecture notes, no book required. He gives a quiz every week or so just to make sure that you're constantly studying your notes which is so helpful in the long run. Labs are an easy 10 pts! If you put in the time, you'll breeze through this class. :)
A lot of info to retain so make sure to pay close attention. Take very copious notes.
Dr. Olsen is a great professor! What I love about him is that his quizzes ¬es are ONLY based on this lecture notes. Which is better then reading off from the book. This class is not easy thou so you must stay focused and study hard!
Olsen is one tough professor, reason being that he wants his students to learn the material well. His notes are clear and helpful! Tests can be both easy and hard depending on the subject. No anatomy class is going to be easy, it all depends on you. I studied my hardest being that i worl full time. Keep focused and do not get distracted!Best of luck
Difficult prof! Expects a lot from his students. Even though this was a 5-week class, we performed as a 16-week class. Two days before the final exam, lecture exam and final practicum, he was still lecturing and expected us to grasp all the material. No textbook required but you better make sure you memorize all his notes.
Memorize ur notes while u eat, sleep, & dream so good that you dont need to look at them. Don't ever skip a day of studying. Don't talk while he lectures or eat in class. Always be on time Either u know the material or not. A lot of free response on test. Great teacher, will learn alot, but work VERY hard. dont take him if u dont have time to study
I took him for BIO-3, I recommend you take good notes and memorize everything that he writes on the board. He gave us several quizzes and about 6 test. It's doable but is not an easy class and he expects a lot of your time.
Very helpful professor who will do everything in his power to help you. His classes are not easy, by any means, but you learn so much in his class. Books were not required for lecture nor lab, but I recommend a good lab manual for anatomy class. These are not those classes where you can study the night before. He asks very specific questions.
Dr Olsen knows his materials, he is super nice. the field trips were super fun ). His lecture was very clear, and as long as you memorize the notes, lecture exam would be easssssy. the lab portion was tough, it was one of the hardest lab I have ever experienced. but as long as you work hard enough, you will be paid! good luck
Take VERY DETAILED NOTES, THEY WILL HELP! There may not be a textbook requirement but that won't excuse students from memorizing everything he expects you to learn in class. A bit snarky but he does care about his students and wants you to pass.
Make no mistake, this is a HARD class. Nearly every week there is either a quiz or a test. Lectures are long and detailed. You will need to study your notes relentlessly. But Dr. Olsen is a great guy. He truly wants you to succeed. He earned my respect many times over.
His lectures are based off of memory. His tests are based off of lectures. He will tell you what to study for his weekly quizzes and exams. Small detailsfacts will show up on exams. Very easy class if you are willing to study (memorize) notes. VERY hard if you are not willing to. Class was fun and rewarding. Easy A but not a giveaway.
Great Professor if you are a serious student. I took him during Summer got an A. Be prepared to take good notes everyday. Do as he says study his notes and you will pass with flying colors. He's demanding but tests & quizzes are not hard he even tells you what till be on the testquiz! He's very passionate about what he does & He's funny!!
He is a good professor! But his class is time consuming. You have to spend a lot of time and effor to get a B or C in his class.
This was one of the hardest class I've ever taken. I got a B but worked the hardest I've ever have. Despite anatomy being a hard subject, he is very clear and you don't need any books (besides the optional atlas) his notes are clear and everything you need to know he provides. He's willing to help you if he sees the effort. I would recommend.
here the choice was get ready to read but i want say get ready to memorize ! there was bunch of name to memorize! even we didn't know what was the difference between those creatures! no book is needed , every single week there is quiz or exam !
Dr O is the man! His class is straight forward. Study the lecture notes and you can get an A. This class will especially prepare and build a strong foundation for students looking to get into the medical field. After taking his class I had a whole new perspective on the human body and mind. Not a class for students who are not eager to learn Anat
Took for ANAT. You get what you worked for. VERY clear guidelines. Would take again
This class was very hard don't get me wrong. However, Dr. Olsen is very straight up and whatever he lectures on will be on the test, nothing else. Quizlet was my best friend. This class is for serious students who are willing to put in the time studying, as opposed to wasting it on efforts complaining about the work load. Got an A overall.
Professor Olsen can be extremely rude and disrespectful to his students when they ask for assistance and he will be upset. He also have a short temper and he is very arrogant. Don't take him because he is a hard grader and unclear with assignments.
You will die in his class. There are only few people stayed in his class at this point
Dr. O is the best! His note is so clear and all quiz/exam is base on given material. Extra credit quiz available. Love the Lab session! Dr. O would answer all your questions repeatably. Took this anatomy class during winter session, he would stay late to help us understand all the name and function very patiently. Will take his class again.
Dr. Olsen is not an easy professor. He expects a lot from you, and it is doable as long as you work hard. Lab is the best time to get to know him; you must reach out to him with questions and not expect him to show you everything. He cares very much about his students and is always willing to stay and help you. Show him you care and he will too.
He is an amazing proffesors . I took him for Anatomy over the summer and I can't say it was one of the most difficult classes I have ever taken but I learned a lot on there. Not much he assigned , just study all of his lecture notes because they will be on his quizzes. Practicals & last final are extremely hard. So study for it. Great class!
Highly recommend taking Dr. Olsen! Took his anatomy course over the summer. Can't say it was easy but its doable. He is very approachable and wants to see his students succeed. He's straight forward on what he expects and is VERY organized with his lectures. Lectures are key. Labs are also key to getting to know him and asking any questions.
Summer session; had him for both lec & lab. To my surprise, his class was not as hard as some of the reviews made it seem. An A is certainly attainable: go to class everyday, copy his exact notes that he writes on board in lec, memorize notes for lec test, and make sure you know the things in the lab packets. Great teacher- prompt, patient & kind.
Determined to help out if necessary and enjoyed his lectures.
This teacher is awful. Do not take him. There are plenty of other great genetics classes that are offered elsewhere with much better teachers that are easier than this. He does not know how to not read from his lecture notes. He does not care about your grade even if you show you try hard. He will lower your GPA!!
He focuses to much on the cat for his muscular system practical. His skeletal system focuses on bone markings instead of making sure we know the bone names and locations. He gets very frustrated during tests and gets angry easily. He thinks everyone is out to cheat. If you plan on passing, get a GOOD study team and read read read.
One of the most stressful classes I've ever taken! It didn't help that I took it during summer. By the end of the session, maybe less than 35% students remained. He has EXTREMELY high expectations and doesn't just hand out A's or B's but I believe he has prepared me for my future endeavors. Dedicate your life to this class and you should pass.
Great Professor!!
Very kind and funny professor. Makes a simple class even simpler to understand. He tells you exactly what will be on the test and is very forgiving. Write down what he puts on the board and you'll be ready for the lecture exam. His practicals are a little difficult but not impossible, it will be the same with any other Bio 7 professor.
Just avoid !
He is heavy on lectures, you miss you won't pass. Clear grading criteria. He expects you to learn. No textbook needed. He only tests from his lectures. Study your notes and you will pass. He does quiz you almost weekly which preps you for tests. He loves his "flow charts" of the different systems. LEARN THEM ALL.
Makes the class very fun and interactive with field trips! He is very easy just as long as you study the notes from his lecture. Don't need a book. Practical exams are fun and are possible to pass and exams are also not hard to pass. I learned a lot and had fun in his class!
Don't listen to the naysayers, Dr. Olsen is awesome! Yes,the class requires a lot of work, but this is a college level biology course, what do y'all expect? In order to do well, memorize the lecture material, and do the homework problems multiple times, also go to OFFICE HOURS. Overal,if you're a hardworking student, take him,if you're lazy, avoid.
Honestly the best anatomy professor. He's a kind and funny professor and loves when you ask questions. This isn't an easy A class, you have to earn your grade. I can honestly say that im glad I took this class because you actually learn. Just make sure you study his notes and you'll be solid.
He is clear on what will be on the test. Which is extremely helpful. He is enthusiastic about the subject and very good lecturer. He not only teaches the subject but also inspires students about other related knowledges. Since his lecture is very clear and understandable, I loved it.
Positives: + Very Helpful. He won't make you feel stupid for asking questions. + Organized lecture format. + Almost always available to help students. + Quizzes and Exams are based of his lecture notes. Negatives Few times he wouldn't know the answer to some of the more complicated and interesting questions related to the lecture.
Olsen is super nice and really gets you prepared. He is extremely lecture heavy, so copy everything he writes on the board and study them ALL. His tests are basically his notes, super straight forward. Nothing will surprise you if you study them well. I took him over the summer, along w/ another class, and still passed with an A. I really like him!
Extremely lecture heavy, nothing is posted online, you don't get much of a chance to improve your grade, tests/quizzes focus on minute details he barely covers, is extremely challenging for an intro class, does not give much instruction during labs, you need really good memorization skills to retain everything he covers, not for busy students
Great professor. One of the ELAC fearful-5. Were very fortunate for the fearful-5.
Prof Olsen is passionate about biology, cares about his students, and expects them to learn. MATERIAL IS NOT DIFFICULT AT ALL-- anatomy courses in general just require heavy memorization. Prof outlines exactly what you need to know by writing everything on the board. So as long as you study his notes and know them inside/out, you'll get an A.
Despite all the bad reviews, I love Dr. Olsen the best! He's passionate with Anatomy, clear flow chart and set a foundation of your anatomy and biology background! If you memorize everything of his lecture/notes, you will get an easy A. No surprise from exam/quiz, everything is a fair game! I also keep my notebook for future use! Greatest class!!!!
His organization is incredible and aids learning. Olsen really cares about his student's success. Go to lecture and you will get an A. I took Anatomy over the summer and received an A. His quizzes might me annoying, but hey, its college. Best professor I had thus far at ELAC.
I highly recommend Olsen! He cares about his students. His midterms are STRAIGHT from lectures. You really need to study the notes and memorize EVERYTHING. I got A's on his midterms from doing this. Don't buy the textbook you won't need it. Just buy an atlas cause for lab. He seems intimidating at first but isn't just don't come late to class.
Class is a lot of memorization, if you start to connect the dots you can actually learn it. He actually is pretty funny and talkative. He is always in his office and does not mind students dropping by, usually there is not much to ask because he gives you everything in lecture but if its a personal problem he understands usually.
He's very straight forward with his notes, tells you what will be on the quizzes/what to study for, and even gives you info about which free responses will be on the tests or models on the practical. This class was a lot of memorizing, but if you put in the work to study/learn, it shouldn't be too hard. PS he likes people who talk to him!
Hes straightforward with everything from notes to test to lab practicals. His test are based off of the lecture notes so wrote it all down. It will be a very difficult class if you do not study and work hard. In this class you earn your grade so work for it.
Professor Olsen is the best! His class requires a lot of studying but what science class doesn't? His lectures are straightforward and everything he covers in class will be on the test. He is very nice and cares a lot about his students. He made his lectures fun and is very passionate about teaching. I would retake him less than a heartbeat.
Great teacher highly recommend, he bases his test on the lecture notes he gives. There's pop quizzes atleast every other week but they are a great help when the exam comes along. You have to put in time and study.
Prof Olsen is really straightforward with his notes and lectures. Quizzes are given but they are there to keep you on your toes so that it forces you to learn the material throughout the week and not at the last minute. He really enjoys conversing with his students and make sure to ask questions if you're confused , even if he seems intimidating.
Took him during winter; 3 exams, 1 final, drops the lowest midterm. All the questions are from his lecture notes so make sure to study those in detail. MC, T/F, and free response were how all the exams were. Lab practicals were pretty hard bc he makes you memorized a lot but you actually come out of the class knowing something. Great professor!
This professor floods students with so much unecessary information that will not be on the exam. No study guides. T/F very tricky, M/C, and FR. Just 1 extra credit of 20pts. He makes practicals super hard. He gives worksheets with 100 or more terms for lab and lets students figure it out themselves. Not a good professor
His lectures consist of him writing pages and pages of notes on the board you can barely read. You're so focused on copying down information you don't understand, you don't hear the rare bits of explanation be does give. 1000 points in class, 1 test and 2 quizzes dropped. Tests are from notes and problem sets in the book. Know how to teach yourself
His teaching method is just piling up students with pages and pages of information, students do not know what to study for the exams. He does not provide study guides. 300 plus terms to study for class exams and practicals just so the exams could have 50 questions. Regret taking this class, because of his teaching, i have to retake anatomy again.
Very knowledgeable teacher . Willing to explain when students ask questions . Exams are hard but his study guide were very helpful . Study as much as you can , you can get A .
Took Anatomy for the summer, be ready for a fast paced class. Everything he goes over in lecture will be on the exams and he provides you with a study guide for the final which was accurate. Dr. Olsen is very passionate, and you could feel his love for teaching. Didn't provide extra credit, but if you go over his material, you don't need it.
What's all the fuss? when you take Anatomy, expect to learn a lot and self-pacing. Style of lecture was very organized for the sheer amount of info have to take in. Don't need the book but i used it. Expect to study 1.5-2hrs/for each class lecture, he's helpful during office hours and really tries to give away points to failing students, overly so!
Very good professor. You take anatomy obviously it's going to be pretty diffucult. His lectures are very straightforward, DONT miss class. Provides you with study guides, for practicals it is a bit hard but he does provide you with a list of what to expect! :) Be prepared to learn in class and to make time to learn outside of class as well.
I had bio 7 with him . One advise : do not take bio 7 with him . You will regret
I've enjoyed being in Dr. Olsen's class since the first day. He is extremely CLEAR about everything. He only gives you information you need to know and doesn't bombard you with a lot. He really cares about his students and wants everyone to not only pass but also understand the material, very helpful. Do not take anatomy with anyone else, he's it!
Dr. Olsen is my favorite professor at ELAC. He really cares about students and he loves talking with students to help them succeed. He is also very inspiring and a very clear instructor. He is also very acknowledged with all the materials that he covers. I love his notes on board because he clearly note down everything that students need to learn.
Dr. Olsen makes the subject very interesting to learn. I just love the old style which notes are written on the board. There is study guide for the final. For the midterms, you just gotta memorize everything off the notes. It was a fun class for me even though it was an early 7am class. He is respectful and caring, so you will learn a lot from him
I feel bad for giving him a bad review but its justified cuz hes really disorganized in his notes and it confuses the heck out of us all. He wouldve been great for in person meetings but he is really bad at online classes. Doesnt know how to use Canvas and Zoom. He loves answering questions but he doesnt respond to my emails despite promising
A very knowledgeable professor that essentially gives you everything that will be on the exams in lectures. The catch - its a lot of information. Seriously, you will have to memorize so much information for both lab portion as well as the lecture portion of this course. Overall, a tough grader, but manageable
Wonderful! Super transparent and clear about grading: 7 quizzes, 4 tests, lab and tells you what content will be tested. YES, it's a lot of material, but what do you expect taking a weeder pre-health class? He's so comprehensive that I use his notes in Physiology the following semester. He cares about your learning, helps you during office hours!
Worst Professor, Due To class being switch to online he couldn't keep up with any work but quizzes and only gave one chance's and a dumb time limit with so many questions. if you miss the quiz or midterm there's no makeup with him putting thing's last minute , pretty much the whole class failed this spring 2020 wouldn't recommend at all.
He switch online for spring it was so hard. I think professor Olsen had good intentions though. The whole covid was unexpected. This class will be a challenge for sure be ready to take good notes. He is very nice and he will make you work for your grade. This is science so be ready for the ride.
Transitioning from in person to online was another added challenge to this class. Study study study! Although there is no hw to turn in your hw is to memorize every word of lecture and lab to score high on tests. Your grade depends on quizs, exams & finals only! Everything is timed. Memorization is KEY. Alootttttt of material but he is helpful.
Do not take bio 7 with him. Maybe other classes is fine but for sure bio 7 is not good
I had a very pleasant experience with Dr. Olsen out of all the science courses I took. He actually cared about us and our grades.
He's a mess. His notes are organized by Roman numeral but he tells you what areas to study by letter (ex- cellular respiration could be XII but he'l says "study section G"), he mispronounces so many words that I truly question how he earn a Ph.D. And don't you dare try to advocate for your education. He's convinced he knows best, there's no point.
Not a bad professor if you know youre material. Everything is based on test. Super easy test tbh. No homework. Just stude and youll be fine. If you dont know how to study correctly, dont take him. Drops your 2 lowest scores. VERY patient and understanding. Kids now of days want too much leniency and get upset when they dont get it. Not a badguy
Took him for summer online. Notes were provided, tests were very straightforward. You obviously have to work for it a bit more because it IS an Anatomy class. Dr. Olsen is very responsive and helpful; it's only in your best interest to take him. A few complained that he is hard but you guys have no idea until you see the other science profs...
VERY disorganized. Does not use the book but makes references from it. Makes mistakes on the tests he gives, and doesnt know what he put on the test. Not clear with grades and waits until the lat day to give you any test grades. 3 midterms, 7 quizzes, 2 lab practicals, and a final. Sarcastic, not knowledgeable, unsure of material he teaches.
Dr. Olsen is a good professor. I took his class anatomy 001 for summer so just recently. The thing is he forgets stuff, he makes mistakes on the tests and doesn't give you opportunity to think during the test. He gives 50 minutes for damn 75 questions. He is approachable when you ask questions.
Anatomy is all factual, he stressed this the most during the course. Theres not trick questions in his exams, and you should know the material just by studying his notes. Everything is timed to keep students from cheating. If you take his summer course study everyday. For his lab practical memorize pictures & re-visit his lectures.
He provides notes for us and that's literally all the things he tests us on. His tests are very straightforward so I'm not sure why other people have a hard time because all you have to do is memorize the notes. Lab exams are the same; just memorize the parts of the body. Easy. His course is lenient compared to the other science profs.
Unfortunately, Dr. Olsen is the perfect example of a professor that is struggling with the online teaching format. For a genetics course, I would recommend taking someone else. The class is often confused during lecture and therefore it requires a lot of outside teaching yourself. Plus his lectures do NOT prepare you well for the homework problems.
All sciences are only exams & he gives 4 midterms 75 Q's w/ a 45 min time limit, 3 lab exams: 40 min, 50 Q's, and 100 Q's on the final. There were many errors on the test & he doesn't respond quickly to emails or fix the exam mistakes. Also, the exam questions are super-specific from his notes, you can't revisit a question on exams either.
1 final 150Q in 75min. 4 midterms 75Q in 45min. 7 quizzes 10Q in 7min. 3 lab practicals 50Q in 40min. Drops 2 lowest quizzes and 1 midterm. Does not correct his mistakes. No Proctorio. No homework or study guides. Recommend to type notes. Quizzes and tests are 100% based off of notes. Lab pictures need to be labeled yourself.
1 final 150Q in 75min. 4 midterms 50Q in 40min. 7 quizzes 10Q in 7min. 3 lab practicals 50Q in 40min. Does not correct his mistakes. No Proctorio. No extra credit. No homework. No study guides. Quizzes & tests are completely based off of notes. Lab pictures to be labeled on your own. Textbook is very useful. Recommend to type notes.
Awful professor, he does not care about his students, plus he makes a lot of mistakes on the tests. He does not give enough time to do the tests. I ended up drooping the class!
there's no hw so credit is based on quizzes and exams. u have approx 30 sec for each question which sucks. all quiz and exams are based of his lectures so take good notes. ctrl f will be your friend. Lab are based on pictures he reviews w you. Print those out and study them. He does take a long time to get back to emails. However, he does care.
I love professor Olsen. Lectures in outline from which I like. Quizzes 10 questions each goes off of anything learned in notes. Test/ midterms 75 questions. Labs 50 questions follow his module pictures and go back and rewatch the zoom classes. I loves this class and would take this again. Fast at responding to emails as well.
I see a lot of bad reviews for anatomy, but it's an anatomy class so what do you expect? This class is necessary for a lot of classes in the medical field! Professor Kirk is very caring and his lectures are clear. He always give you a chance to ask questions. Make sure you study and you will pass! I would definitely retake.
A pretty easy class as long as you're paying attention during the lecture you should be good. Also I recommend that you ask him lots of questions if you're stuck on anything.
His class WILL stress you out. Theres no homework so its a test heavy class, gives you 40 minutes to do 75 question on the exams. Does not care about his students. Embarrassed a girl in my class for asking an innocent question. Makes mistakes on exams , KNOWS that he made a mistake and wont fix it.
This professor gives you 75 questions in 40 minutes. Do NOT TAKE HIM IF YOU LIKE TO TAKE YOUR TIME IN TESTS! for quizzes 10 question for 5 minutes. He doesn't make things clear in lectures and it's hard to study this class. He would get mad at the smallest things, he's very old school so he does everything the old school way. Overall, terrible.
Dr. Olsen is the most experienced professor in ELAC. He knows the technique for students to understand and remember the materials. I just love that he is an old school with all clean concise notes prepared for us. You don't need to read extra textbook. As long as you memorize everything on his note, you will get an A for lecture.
By far one of the hardest Professors, EVER! Exams are fully proctored with Webcam and Microphone! If your eyeballs move to the side your exam will close and fail you. NO excuse email will help you! First thing he will say your CHEATING!! The worst Bio class and he makes the material even harder !!! And you have 40 min to complete a 90 que exam!
I just love taking Dr. Olsen's classes. He is an old school meaning he writes lots of notes on board. His lecture style made it really easy for me to study for the key points without wasting my precious time on endless lecture powerpoint. He is very caring and knowledgable. Definitely recommend his class!
Prof. Olsen has way too many middle school rules.
OMG! Worst professor EVER! He runs the class like its a punishing initiation rite!
Love the way he lectures. Anatomy is everything about memorizing but he made everything easy to digest. Kind of an old school because he still uses the pen and whiteboard. Very knowledgeable and caring as well. I would love to take his other bio classes!
Horrible!
This is a difficult class in itself. It is very heavy on the taxonomy/anatomy of many many organisms. It's a lot of memorization and you need to study hard for all the exams. He is a tough professor, but he does care and wants to see his students succeed. The lecture part has 7 quizzes, 4 exams (lowest dropped), and 1 cumulative final.
Pt.1 of my review. Going into the class I thought I would do awful and I hated going. In the end, he motivated me to change my ways and I did! Dr.Olsen is very kind and he genuinely wants all of his students to succeed. If you talk to him about your concern for your grade he will direct you on the right path and constantly check on you.
Pt.3 If you leaf the dissection and find everything you will know exactly what to look for during the practicals which will also guarantee your amazing grade. For the first microscope practical make sure you take pictures of all microscope slides and label their kingdom, phylum, and genus, all of those will be asked. Dont be scared to ask questions
Worst mistake ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The class is straightforward, you will be tested on what he lectures. Took it during 5 week summer, was definitely a challenge but 100% manageable if you show up to class, take notes and study. I enjoyed the class and feel that I truly learned and understand the information we covered. Definitely recommend as he is organized and knowledgeable
We had to take the 3rd midterm, final exam, and the second lab exam all back to back on the same day.
I had an excellent experience with Professor Olsen. He was helpful throughout the course, especially when the material got challenging. He has an ability to break down down harder concepts which made learning a lot smoother. He always encouraged us and ensured we understood the subject. Truly cares about his students progress.
Had him for lab summer 2024 and the class was pure memorization. He gives a list things to memorize and the tests are based exactly on that. Take advantage of class time and please ask him questions, he is very kind. Graded based on a few test tests, but it isn't hard as long as you studied. I recommend buying the book he asks. Easy A honestly.
Professor Olsen is extremely intelligent and gives all of his students chances to get a good grade. The course itself is challenging but his lectures and lab match perfectly. For lab he gives you a guide to memorize and that will be the practical. He also gives the free response questions in advance for exams.
Professor Olsen is amazing and very straight forward. He wants you to succeed and gives so many chances to improve your grade. Anatomy is a lot of memorization, do not miss lectures or labs. Only responsible for material covered in lecture, no book necessary. Take good, organized notes and ask questions. Would love to take another course with him.
Took his class in the winter for the lab part, First day of class he hands you out worksheets. Everything you are going to be tested on are on those worksheets. Of course he won't just hand you an A but it's incredibly easy because you know what to expect in each exam. Has extreme patience to any question you have! I will for sure miss this class!
I had him for the lab portion of anatomy in winter and he was absolutely amazing! His expectations on what you needed to know were clear. Not very tech savvy but very passionate about biology and genuinely wanted his students to do well. I wish I could take more of his classes! He had a good sense of humor too.
The professor told us he is retiring. This is his last semester teaching at elac. =(
