You can't go wrong in this class. Somewhat boring but gives reviews before the test and study sheets.
He is a total mythology freak. Expects you to be an expert walking into the class. Will put you to sleep everytime!!
Not exactly an easy class, but if you want to learn he really tries to teach in a meaningful way. If u have ?'s he is very helpful, wants to make sure you understand. take good notes and do the reading, tests are challenging but really not that hard.
Absolutely loved his class. Interesting if you like the subject material. Don't expect an easy A; just put some time and effort in and you'll get a good grade. Also, weekly papers are so much better than two or three big papers. And they are check cre
This guy knows what he is doing. He is very clear and he tries to get students involved in his classes. Anyone who is bored with the class is simply not interested in the material. He could be more fair in his grading of mini-essays.
A LOT OF Work. And, he TOTALLY expects you to be an expert, else listen to his MONOTONE voice for 3 hours, and be able to grasp abstract concepts from 1-2 sentence summaries he gives. Not recommended at all. Take another professor!!!!
His classical Mythology course rocks. I loved every class. Presents readings and assignments clearly and lectures are extremely interesting. He's also funny which doesn't hurt. I recommend this professor and the course.
I KNOW Shelko is reading this so I'll be blunt, Pray and pray HARD! His lectures are interesting, but he does talk too much and u should read the material carefully. Does Give Study Guide for tests tho. Write what he wants AND more and you should be fine.
Just to clarify... he is not a mythology freak! At least not in a bad way! He was very offended by such a comment... it's ok Shellko. Class is interesting and he is a great teacher. Loves what he does. Easy as long as you go and pay attention.
class is cool. it is very interesting. i am one of the laziest kids at loyola and i am getting a B. If you pay attention in class.. the tests are a breeze. hes a cool guy too.
cool prof. very easy. take good notes. he gives reviews for the exam which are all notes. will not surprise you with tricky questions. no papers. got a b+ but i never really studied.
This guy is incredibly knowledgeable. You can get an easy B, but you have to work for an A. Attend every class + take good notes (what he thinks is what he wants). He tries to bring fresh perspective to every class meeting. He's funny too. Hot.
Hard class, he's prone to mood swings, very helpful with questions outside of class, though.
Nice teacher, outside of Class, in class makes translating very difficult b/c he gives you no time to work it out in your head, Know Vocab, Grammar and Syntax b/4 you get to this class
He's a real nice guy, if you respect him. He likes to make class fun by making jokes. This class was a lot of fun and this teacher is recommended.
This class was incredible. Talked a great deal, always were engaged. Take good notes and listen to his interpretation; he grades somewhat harshly in the Tragedy class(I took myth with him too), but I learned so much. He's very knowledgable and engaging.
I really enjoyed this class. Make sure you go to class but I didn't find this class difficult at all. Take good notes and you'll be fine.
Very interesting and funny class! Explains everything clearly, so just take good notes. His approach is novel and he has an open mind. I am going to take him for every classics course I can. I suggest you do the same.
Total ****bag.. your typical overly cocky graduate student/phd candidate who thinks everyone shares his deep love for classical mythology, yet fails to realize that 98% of the class is taking it for core credit.. hopefully this guy will get his PhD and move far, far away..
I thought i could breeze by with an easy A, but not in this class. I'm busting my butt off just to get a B. Shellko needs to realize that we are all just satisfying core, not becoming CLST majors. 95+ for an A. That is impossible to achieve in his class. Dont take him. Trust me.
The mini-essays are not hard and the tests are easy, if you take notes and study. I don’t know what someone is talking about when they say he thinks everyone is interested in myth. He makes jokes about his class being merely a core class all the time. What grade are you getting?
Well what can I say about this guy except that he is an oddball. He is very nice and funny some of the time. Classes can tend to get boring, but his tests and weekly assignments are simple. Go to class and take notes and you will be fine. He really makes you think about some of the subjects.
Cool funny easy class. Nice helpful. ten mini essays for 10% of ur grade. three tests but they are not hard. Just take notes and u will get easy A. He also make the subject interesting.
Ok, i wasn't much interested in the subject b4 the class.(and I'm still not) But Shellko makes getting ur core over with Easy. Gives u study guides. He explains things well. He'll help you if come to his office. I don't know about some of these posters. U won't get an A for sitting on ur @$$. You almost can't miss if you show up and pay attention.
this guy isnt bad considering the subj is pretty dry.he seems likehe rely wants you undrstand material but he can go on and on & doesn't notice no one is listening. reading is ok but shellko explains everythg so u don't have to read:)study guides are the best! the only thing is that novel we read (i actualy read it) made absolutly no sense.it sux!
This prof is not bad. Gives study guides and seems to enjoy the material. He is kind of philosophical and the class does get boring, but I don't think its him. The novel was cool, it was a bit odd though. I'd take him again.
Great teacher. Engaging and very helpful. Pulls out the best answers in the class.
He teach in a way that make classic study interesting. Gives out study guides and tell u pretty much he want to test. A good lecturer and tell jokes often which make class fun. Test question maybe a little tricky but an A is definitely possible and you will definitely end up learning a lot too. I recommend taking him
such a boring teacher, it takes everything in my not to fall asleep. 10 mini essay but they are evry inclear. the exams are NOT easy at all. if you need an easy elective DO NOT TAKE HIM, for anything. he thinks everyone loves the subject like he does. hes the only one who laughs at his mythology jokes.
i was psyched for this class, but this guy just didnt do it for me. i hated going every wed. he is so dry and boring. the mini essays are very unclear and thats the point of them too. the exams are not hard but plan on pulling an all nighter to study for them.
I liked this class quite a bit. Exams are easy with study guide and he injects humor into the class. I wasn't so psyched about the class before, now I like it, but no more Virgil please! For a subject that's pretty boring, he makes it fun. You need to talk to him though. Personable.
He made class discussion interesting. He has a good sense of humor. Exams are easy if you take notes in class- the questions and essays come directly from discussion and the studyguide. He is approachable and helpful. Do the reading and you will have no problem getting an A or B.
Shelko is really interesting with his lectures, and he makes class fun, and exciting. His tests are rather hard though..
His classes are rather boring and he tends to ramble on in an illogical way. If you take really good notes and know when not to pay attention, you'll do alright. Only a final and midterm, with study guides that don't really help at all. He seemed a bit too addicted to Freud for a myth class.
Kirk is an interesting fellow. He's really interested in what he has to say and he really wants you to be too. He has something of a charming personality I suppose, but he really is a very nice man. His tests are tricky, but if you do the study guide you'll do well. An A is hard to get, but doable.
This class is interesting if you pay attention. The study guides help enormously and the class is consistent, myth isn't. He isn't illogical. On the contrary, he made an illogical subject consistent. Otherwise, he had to jump around from myth to myth. That becomes annoying, but it's hardly his fault.
Class was interesting and done in a systematic way. Exams are difficult, but not impossible. He knows his stuff. Mini-essays are not that fun, but the class is entertaining and informative. I'd take him again.
This class is boring. He does not efficiently explain everything yet expects you to know all the material. Hard grader. I barely pulled off a descent grade and I studied alot. Avoid his classes if possible.
Class is entertaining. Some of the plays we read I didn't like, but the prof is good. Expects in class contributions, so read the material. Can be tough, but easy in the end. Trust me. I'd take him again.
Prof. Shellko has a great dry sense of humor, not only that but he has out-of-this-world sex appeal! When it came to class, he kept the information interesting and help you find what he is looking for on tests and papers. If you go to class and listen, it is not that difficult, plus it is entertaining!
He was great! The day before the exams I would pretty much ask him to review the entire study guide with me, and he didnt mind! You have to read the plays!! Don't slack on the reading or you will be messed up. He's awesome and very helpful! Class is only boring when no one has done the reading, and therefore their is no discussion, So just read :)
He was a great professor. He is interested in your thoughts about the plays and assignments. Inorder to do well in this class you have to read the plays on time. If no one reads then there isn't really a class, since the class is dependent on discussion. I totally recomend this class.
Do not take this class. It was hard a lot of work for what it is not worth. NO papers, a lot of reading. Lots of reading. Lots of theories and analysis
Not a bad class if you're interested in the subject matter and enjoy reading for analysis. kind of a bore if you have him for 2.5 hrs
Good class for lit core. Very clear about what he wants on the test and the mini essays are not bad, one page and he goes over the question in class. Its a little long to sit through sometimes but overall Shellko is a great teacher.
i thought this class would be interestin, but it bores me to death. if you like philosophy & alot of analysis, this is the teacher for you. he kinda grades tough but he is really helpful. i did bad on his midterm but he let me do an xtra credit paper, lets me send him rough drafts, & is gna give me a private study session for final.
This class is ok if you like to sit for 2.5 hours and listen to someone drone on and on and on. There are 5 mini-essays (1pg long) that are not that hard if you pay attention in class and read SparkNotes, and all the tests are essay formatted but are easy if you pay attention. I recommend the class, just not the professor.
Class was fun. This professor is entertaining and not difficult, if you talk with him.You get to watch some movies and discussion is open. Class isn't clear if you don't participate.
A truly enjoyable class. Shellko has a singular dry wit, that is very refreshing. Attendance isn't mandatory, but if you want a good grade you will show up to each class. Enjoy.
The classes were a bit long but you get a break in the middle! I quite liked his sense of humor and that made the class more enjoyable. You should sparknote a bit if you need to be caught up and listen during discussion and take good notes for what you need for his essays and you'll do fine!
He really knows the material and teaches it very well. Just take very good notes during lectures and study everything he says and you'll do fine. His tests aren't bad, but some questions are tricky if you don't pay attention or read the plays. I'd definitely recommend him.
Dr. Shellko is an awesome teacher. Do the readings, not because you will fail the test if you don't, but because the reading is interesting. The papers are easy and the tests are pretty easy if you go to class and have a general knowledge about the plays. He probably has the best sense of humor too. All around good class.
This guy's pretty awesome. It sucks that the grading system is not very clear (you get a check/check+ on the papers) but honestly this was an overall easy class. You probably don't NEED to do the readings if you take awesome notes but your world will be so much easier if you do them. I read probably 8/10 of the books int heir totality and got an A.
WORST instructor. Syllabus is 100% unclear re: homework assignments and grading. 5 assigned texts & 20+ e-articles, but doesn't mention source or page # for weekly assignments. I've been confused all semester. WAY too much information to cover. If you need help don't bother asking him for help. He won't. The class also runs long at 9:30 PM. AVOID.
TAKE SHELLKO for literary core...or any class for that matter. A truly wonderful professor. He is passionate and extremely knowledgable about classics. Even better, he is extremely understanding and accepting of the fact that not everyone is passionate and knowledgable about classic lit. Go to class, take notes, study the study guide-you'll do well
I had no interest in literature when I signed up for this course and I can honestly say that Shellko has changed the way I think about literature and art, even life! I have an unexpected appreciation for literature and am incredibly grateful I took this class. Shellko is an amazing professor. Take him for lit core!
Go to his classes to gain understanding of the themes and possible interpretations of each work, but if you miss class, just get the notes from someone who takes good notes. Shellko is a great man: quirky but oddly charismatic. Great class taught by a great professor.
took his class as a night class and it was a good decision you have to come to class because everything he says can be on the exam he is pretty clear on what he wants and a fair grader if you do the work and he sees you care you should be okay one of the better professors at this school
A bit confused with how this guy grades. I was doing well and then was really shocked at my final grade. I almost feel he is one of those guys that gives very few good grades and gives C's like candy. The course was excellent, and the time taken on the readings was awesome. But bottom line, I don't know what this guy wants. Not sure if worth it.
Great guy. Passionate about the material. Go to class, pay attention, and take good notes. An A is very possible.
Very weird man but in an interesting kind of way. He likes people to participate in discussions and bases his class and the assignments he gives on the discussion. So going to class is a must. He doesn't really let you have your own opinion though and his can be really out there. But as long as you give him what he wants, easy to do well.
I have taken this guy for two classes and it still amazes me how clear his lectures are. The class is made up of a two tests and a final and 5 mini essays. The class is based on in class discussion so as long as you keep him talking, he will basically give you the answers to all the essays. Make sure to avoid using "this" in your papers!
He's kind of a strange guy, but is super passionate about what he teaches. You definitely need to go to every lecture in order to pass, as most things he talks about in class aren't necessarily in the books and will probably be on the exams or incorporated into a mini essay. In general, a pretty easy class if you are willing to put in the work.
His lectures run the whole 2 and half hours! Don't think that you will get out early because that only happened like 1 time. His tests are long and a lot of writing. He had 5 mini essays but it seems to be difficult to get a 10/10 because he's a tough grader. He is smart and knows what he's talking about but it is still a tricky course!
He's an amazing professor and I wish I could've taken more classes with him. You don't need to actually read because he'll explain absolutely everything. He's a tough grader so make sure you can write well. Tests are easy and he's hilarious. He seriously doesn't know how appreciated he is.
Shellko is a great lecturer. He is very clear and concise, so if you go to class and take good notes, then you will definitely be fine because he will give you all the answers. There are 5 mini essays and 2 tests. On the mini essays, don't use the word "This" at the beginning of the sentence because he will take points off.
quiz every week. get ready to study. great professor. don't slack.
Dr. Shellko genuinely cares about his students. His class discussions are very interesting. If you put in the effort and pay attention/take good notes during class you will do good. Exams reflect the study guide and are heavily based on in class discussion. Understand his expectations for essays and focus on clarifying and supporting your ideas.
Dr. Shellko is super intimidating and blunt. It makes for a very interesting lecture that takeswild turns each day. He grades off of a midterm, 2 papers, and a final, so if you mess up one you lose the A automatically. You could pass without reading, but would need to come up with brilliant ideas to get good grades on papers
Anyone who says you don't need to read is lying. You MUST read the material if you want to do well in the class. He really respects people who participate a lot and he's more likely to grade you better if you do. Tests are easy but essays are very difficult. He's kind of a strange guy, but he knows his stuff. Entertaining once you get to know him.
The class itself wasn't too bad but he is an extremely tough grader. Grading of essays seems to be unfair especially considering 3 pages is not enough to develop a thesis. The first exam was graded harshly. Take another class if you can.
This was a great class. The professor is funny and generous, but you need to talk for a good grade. Grading on the papers is tough, but an A is not impossible. Exam questions are hard, but doable. Talk in class and he will put your answer on an exam. He'll tell you to no take it personally.
Dr. Shellko is a great teacher, but the class is hard. The essays are tough, but if you have a unique idea that is a good start. Also don't use "this" and don't hesitate to ask for help on essays. The tests are also rather hard but as long as you study and review what the class said for a particular play, you should be fine.
I like Dr. Shellko, but this was a challenging course. I went to every lecture and took diligent notes and still struggled on the exams and essays. Provides a 'study guide' for the exams but it didn't prepare me for the exams. I studied and reviewed but It was just very hard.
I very much enjoyed his class. He makes Classical Tragedy very interesting and tries his best to engage the students without calling on them. His tests can be a little challenging, but as long as you know the material you'll do fine. Really great class taught by a very knowledgeable professor!
Class is only once a week so super lower maintenance. Hilarious dude that makes jokes but never laughs at them, making them even funnier. Get ready to laugh. Very knowledgable and encourages participation. Only had to do 2 essays and take 1 midterm. SG given. Do SG and take class notes on what he writes on the board.
This is a solid choice for core. You definitely need to read the assigned material and go to lecture, but everything on the exam is covered in class. There weren't any surprises.
While he is really kind, Professor Shellko did not transition to online learning well. He tries his best but a two hour nighttime lecture is really difficult to absorb all of the information. I showed up to and participated in every single lecture and still got a B on the final. The study guides were not helpful and did not contain exam content.
Boring lectures. Dreadful for online classes.
Shellko teaches online as if the class is in person. This is the best part of the class. There are no videos to watch, except the lectures he posts online and you need to do that only if you want. The medical terminology is relatively easy. The science material is harder. Definitely recommended.
Shellko uses online time to lecture. He doesn't use a lot of virtual material or online sources, but he uses some. So, the class isn't an online course so much as it is an ordinary course online. This has some drawbacks, but the prof is very interesting. Definitely recommended.
Dr. Shellko's class was pretty difficult, the medical terms were fine but the other half of the class made it a lot more work. On top of that the essays took a long time to write because they weren't the most interesting topics. He does care about his students though which helped
Great professor. Very doable courses. He gives a study guide for the midterm and final. he will talk to you in person before the exam. The grading guidelines are clear and his lectures are funny. If you read the material and take good notes, you should do well. He makes the material interesting and he listens to students when they want to talk.
Took him for UCLR 100C. He talks a lot and youll most likely always leave at the time you have to (he says hell let you go out early but that rarely is true). Prepare to read, even though he usually wont test if you did read until an exam.
Professor Shellko followed the syllabus to a T without any inconvenient changes. The expectations were clearly articulated and his grading was fair with good feedback. The lectures were interesting and engaging. His sense of humor and sarcasm made the lectures more engaging. Very straightforward class.
Lecture-heavy but amazing at lecturing and understanding material in-depth, really funny guy and very enjoyable to have a class with him. Make sure to get the books on time and to read, but if you happen not to read he explains well enough for you to understand the topics very well. TAKE HIM!!! he rocks
Shellko is one of my favorite profs that I've had at Loyola. He has a good sense of humor and his lectures are always relevant to the material that you will be graded on.Your final grade is based on few things, but he offers extra credit and will discuss grading if you are concerned. He is passionate about the topics and wants everyone to pass.
There's no group work or facilitation of participation so it was tough to sit through sometimes. The worst thing is your midterm and final are each 40% of your grade and the study guides are so vague it's hard to know what to study, but he was a nice guy and made himself available if you had questions. The lectures were just pretty boring and heavy
Love him! He is not a harsh grader and he's very kind. The class was interesting and I really enjoyed it. The papers were not bad either. Exams were pretty easy as long as you pay attention.
Dr. Shellko is a cool guy and really easy to reach outside of class. His lectures only need to be skimmed, but they're very insightful. He both emphasizes important points and makes them clear on the study guide. Papers are the worst, but he's not an awful grader, and they're pretty flexible. A good class to take either for credit or interest.
Shellko is a funny guy, and his lectures are interesting. The papers are super vague and require a lot of reading, but are flexible with requirements. The midterm and final are worth 40% of your grade EACH, but he is a relaxed grader and the questions come straight from the lectures. The late night class is brutal but overall an enjoyable course.
When I first got the syllabus, I was ready to drop cause it seemed like too much. But in the end, it was not all too bad and the class is entirely doable. The papers are vague, so they're flexible - just make a point about the play and relate it to something mentioned in lecture. Exams are also easy as long as your familiar with general ideas.
Professor Shelko was an amazing teacher and really knows his material. He has a dry sense of humor with some self depreciation sprinkled in
class was graded on 4 things- 2 essays, a midterm, and final. little room for error. its after the semester and neither essay has been graded yet. nothing gets put into the gradebook so you have no clue on where you stand in the class until your grade is posted in locus. if said essays have been graded, then you are unable to see the grade you got.
While the classes can be boring and seem like forever, professor Shellko is a great guy. EXTREAMLY easy grader. Many people complained about him not grading their essays but they most likely did not attend class as he said multiple times where to find the grades. Attend class and you'll do fine, but many don't. Maybe 7 ppl showed up weekly.
He clearly cared about the material and actually made me appreciate classical lit. However, he never bothered to grade my second essay (yes, I know where to look), and the tests are really difficult. I appreciate that he gave good feedback on the first essay, though.
Shellko is a great professor - his lectures are engaging, and the assignments are manageable. The exams are challenging but doable with good study habits. Unstuck Study AI was really helpful for exam prep.
He makes the class easy to understand, but didn't grade my second paper. He explains everything in simple terms, would definitely recommend if you struggle to engage in any humanities class.
Skellko's lectures feel all over the place but he does a fine job of making tragedies interesting and easier to understand. Annoyingly political (always has Trump on his mind) but pretty self-aware and understands that most students are taking his class for the Core. Don't skip class and take good notes for essays and exams! Open note final too.
A really good guy. Shellko cares about his students. He goes easy on the grades. He makes the material interesting. He talks a lot of philosophy and some psychology, but the class is always intersting. Would take again.
Shellko is an interesting guy. A bit strange sometimes, but funny. He knows the material well and he is willing to talk to students outside of class. Not as political as some believe. If you engage him philosophically, it is best. Kind guy, kind grader. Would take again.
