he's nice enough but he's kinda unreasonable and really tough
Dr. Land is a great teacher and a really nice guy. He works his butt off for us even though he is very busy outside of class. He puts a lot of effort into his lectures and cares about us learning. He is great!
Very easy to understand and clear on what will be on the exam. Exam can be a little tricky (like most bio exams though)
Dr. Land is willing to help if you go to his office hours, but overall the class is really hard. You have to memorize everything in lecture and the book because he will test on details, and the tests are not always clear.
he's hecka hard and crazy!!!!
to do good in this class, you have to memorize an insane amount of information. this year he completely changed his test format from mc to direct recall and some other weird stuff. he expects you to know the most trivial details. he's a nice, enthusiastic, helpful prof.. but inconsistent and unfair.
Best teacher I ever had. Makes u realize biology is more than simply regurgitation. Difficult b/c he wants you to think...to figure life out for yourself. I look at nature differently. I observe more critically. Take him if you can!
A very good and intelligent teacher, but can be unfair at times. He likes getting to know his students and is VERY helpful, but his exams are tough. His class is very hard and requires you to put an extreme amount of effort in the class, but will help you as much as he can.
really constructive
He is a very hard teacher, straight up,but he makes you realize that biology isn't just a bunch of facts. Went his office hours, asked him what certain things mean and he explained them. Great professor cuz he wants to get to know students.Had to study hard for his class but worth it.Great professor!
Dr. Land is soo cool!! everyone should have him!!he is very helpful and tries his best to help everyone!!!
Hard, if you're taking it pay attention to the most minute details and maybe you'll pass
I love Dr. Land. Great prof who really cares about his students and their wellbeing. Also tries new appraches to teaching, which help make his courses fun.
he is hard, but he makes it fair by giving study guides. must listen to his lectures carefully, since he does test on extra info given. love his lectures, very enthusiastic, i now love microbio. no curve, ur total points = ur score. very intelligent. truly cares about students and listens to students. highly recommend.
His charm will motivate you to go to class and do your best. He gives you more than enough practice tests and study guides. Do those and attend lecture, and you can get an A! I love him!

He's the hardest ****ing teacher you will ever have. HEs helpful though, its just that his tests are made from the devil and i don't think anyone should go through with that.
hmmp :-(
Very impressive teaching style. People complain that he is the most difficult teacher out there, but when I went through his class, I fuond other professor's tests to be much more difficult. You just have to prepare by not cramming at the last minute, nor tryign to read everything in the bio text. Just watch what you're doing, and know your vocab.
he's really educated. very detail oriented and that can be seen in the notes and tests. tests weren't all that bad. vocab is a must (i recommend flashcards!). dont ask questions that pertain to useless information otherwise it's fairgame for the test (freshman alert for this one).
he gave me my first A in a science class @ UOP. he motivated me to stick w/ pharmacy cuz he related this class w/ your future profession so it was very applicable. u have to listen carefully to the lectures & take good notes & do the study guides cuz he is detailed but if u do it then ull be fine. he really cares 4 students
One hard class! Pay attention and memorize every little detail in notes/book and absorb everything in lecture like a sponge and maybe you'll pass. Tests are really hard unless you know your stuff and the class is very time consuming..so be prepared! Good Luck with this one!
Prof Land expects you to work hard and memorize a lot of details about biology. He gives a lot of information and psyched you out for the exam but in the end it really wasn't that hard if you put a good deal of effort into it. Biology is straight up memorization so if you don't do well, it's because you didn't study enough.
Study! That's all I can say, lots of material has to be learned for each individual test. Very challenging class. Looks for a lot of participation in lectures. Overall, he's very helpful and friendly but its still an exceptionally hard class.
I was a grad student and took one of his first classes. He is hard but he is under pressure from pro's like vierra and jongeward. Go in ask him how you can perform better on his tests he is really nice.YOur going to find out soon if science is for you. Chemistry hard concepts, Biology=easy concepts but 10 times the material in the same time.
Lets just put it this way. If you want to leave Pacific with a great foundation in Bio, take Land. Sadly, I think this is his last year teaching Biol 51.
Its a hard class you really need to study, Ask questions and speak up in class, he memorizes everyones names, Classes are in tuned with labs towarks the end of the course when you get to organisms. Overall he was a good teacher.
Absolutely ridiculous. He expects you to know everything about everything he taught, including lectures, lecture notes, and the book. His tests are very tough and require a lot of hard work. Good class that he gives you a lot of info, but very difficult and often unnecessary.
THE BEST MICROBIOLOGY PROFESSOR YOU COULD EVER HAVE! Dr. Land is an amazing instructor and WANTS his students to do well. Lectures are crystal clear and never tests on any outside of lecture material. Book is a good tool but his lectures are enough. Really cares about the subject and is always willing to help outside of class. HE IS AMAZING!
I took him for micro last fall 07. for all three midterms he had different formats. the second exam was so ridiculous that he had to retest us. his final was out of this world, no way to prepare for it, and everyone dropped about a letter grade. I walked in with an A and had an A in lab, and got a B+ in the class. Total B.S. You'll get screwed.
Land is a great teacher. His tests are very difficult though. It isn't impossible you just have to study and work hard. Take his advice when he says you have to study every day. He is a great professor though and although I failed I wish I had paid more attention and didn't ditch as much.
Extremely difficult class, but if you study hard, it's manageable. He is a great teacher; makes you work for your grade. It helps a lot to show up to class and participate.
Absolutely a great teacher. His lectures were very clear, very precise, he's always active, and he KNOWS ALL OF YOUR NAMES! Really great because you can tell that he wants you to pass the class, but he still doesn't compromise his own teaching standards.
Dr. Land is an extremely hard professor. But he makes you pay attention to his lectures because he'll call on you no matter who you are. He knows all of his students names and wants you to do well. He is always available for help. Even though you might think he is judging you for asking a stupid question, he's not. Great teacher!
One of the best bio teachers at Pacific! His lectures are just amazing, filled with both boring bio notes and interesting sidenotes. he does really know everone's name, and will help you fulfill his demands for the class. His tests are fairly difficult, but manageable with a lot of study time (..a lot).
One of the best professors I've had! He's expects a lot out of his students, but he really cares about their success. He is extremely energetic and forces you to pay attention. Take Land if you want an amazing teacher, but only if you are willing to put forth the effort in return.
This class is a joke. Total weed out class. Waste of time learning uninteresting phylums and classes. This teacher is the hardest of all the sections and his average is one of the lowest. I wonder why?! Maybe if we didn't have to memorize those stupid life cycles his tests would only be 20 pages instead of 23. Good luck!!
Crazy prof + long exams = challenge. Just make sure you're up to it. Very difficult to get ahold of in his office hours because he can't stay put. Loves Pre-Dents and Pre-Pharm; sucks for the other majors that have to take the course because he usually ignores them. Recommended: study really hard and have ESP in order to guess what he might ask.
Dr. Land is one of a kind and to me, he was more than a professor. He guided me through much of my freshman year and his funny mannerisms make the class enjoyable. He does get very serious and at times, he falls slightly behind but only because his attention to detail is unrivaled. Other than that, his tests are usually straight foward but longg.
I was fortunate to take this class during my Junior year after my wake-up call; due to my super slow and crap start at college. However I did wish I had him when I was starting because I would have had my wakeup call earlier. Much earlier. Dr. Land is a great teacher but he does emphasize "challenge." Be prepared to do work and be challenged!
Ugh. Difficult professor. Really have to devote time and apply yourself. He is aggressive and expects you to be the best. A lot of exams and long labs. Quizzes every week.
You learn a lot, but his exams are ridiculous! He is intense. Expect to work a lot harder than all of the other sections. He will show up to your labs and grill you too. His exams are way too long for the amount of time given. Even if you know all the answers, you don't have enough time to write them down. Great for learning, but awful for your GPA
Dr. Land is a genius but NOT a good professor. His teaching method may work for a select few, but probably won't work for the majority of students. Exams are not based on his lectures, and are very long, very difficult, and almost impossible to finish on time. Never fall behind and be prepared for ridiculous amounts of studying. Good luck!
Prof Land is crazy! He definitely knows a ton about biology and he is SUPER passionate for it. The exams are ridiculous. Prepare to make this your number 1 priority. If you have a fairly small class size, make sure to show up. H's known to call you personally if you skip. He is a great lecturer and very animated, but you MUST study outside of class
Very interesting instructor, but his exams were incredibly difficult. I thought I studied hard, but still only got a mediocre grade, not good for your grade point average.
Tests are extremely difficult. If you can, switch out immediately and into another Bio 51 class. If not, prepare yourself to studying solely for that class for pretty much every waking moment. Will not be good for your GPA if you choose not to do that. He is MUCH more approachable outside of class and will help you if you visit office hours.
I dropped his class. His exams were way too long and difficult. Even though I knew most of the answers I could only finish 75% of the exams. I feel screwed.
He's a pretty good professor and like everyone says, his exams are bit tricky. But he'll help you if you're willing to put in the time. Very understanding. Very good about curving at the end. Got 7-10% curve for both 51 and 61.
He will always tell you where to focus your studying on. There will often be short answer questions that will be based on class discussion: GO TO CLASS! He posts old exams, although they don't always match up with the material for your exam, so be careful. Practice Campbell questions from online - he is a very fair grader
Wants to be able to photosynthesize...amazing teacher
Honors Project Proposal. He was amazing: Passionate about research, supportive of student-drive interests. He will also very very very direct. Take his advice and run with it: he knows what he's talking about, as he gets undergrads publish a lot. He will not hold your hand or chase you down, so get to work: he will cheer you all the way.
His exams are lengthy and intense. To me, his tests gauged how quickly we can read and not how much we know. He's too passionate about biology to the point that he seems intimidating.
Dr.Land is extremely passionate and intimidating due to his knowledge. His memory is remarkable and won't hesitate to call students who miss class (to check on their well-being of course). Although his tests are challenging, his students that succeed are primed to do well and often find other biology courses easy.
I know people have horror stories about Land but honestly bio is a subject that you master by repitition. Land is a great guider/mentor and points you to the important stuff that you should know. On tests, the first is really unreasonable and then the remainders are really doable and he usually gives freebies. He cares about his students honestly.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HIM. Tests are close to impossible to pass (pre-curve). He has you memorize things that no other teachers do. His enthusiasm for the class just becomes annoying by the second week of class. If possible take the class with another teacher.
His tests are NOT IMPOSSIBLE. His first exam was extremely hard, but after that all the tests were either too easy or fair(come on he tells you what's going to be on the test) Participate in class and read your textbook and this course should not be hard.
His tests are NOT impossible. The first one is always hard. He uses it to get people to drop his class. He usually tells you what's going to be on the test, and as long as you memorize what he tells you and read the book, you will do perfectly fine. Don't let him overwhelm or scare you out of the class. It's not bad. I got a B+ in 51 and A in 61.
He gives good lectures, but he's also full of hot air. Never there for office hours and will lie and make excuses why. Tests are either super hard or easy. Downgraded the class my semester.
Land is iffy. He's just really abstract in lecture and does not explain concepts in a straight forward fashion unlike most of the other bio professors. Very flamboyant too. I honestly preferred reading the book even though I always attend lecture.
He gives great feedback on tests, and makes sure that all of his students are on the path to success. He cares about every individual who sits in his lectures and will notice if you aren't there, so don't skip (even 8AMs). He is fun to talk to in office hours, but scares you by not telling anyone the curve until two days before grades are out.
Oh the dreaded professor Land!! He's honestly a great and helpful person but his exams are killer if you don't spend over 8 hours a week preparing for them. He really wants you to memorize a bunch of stuff that other professors don't require but if your pre-pharm then it's very useful and I highly recommend taking him. Do not miss class!
Professor Land has been my favorite professor for my freshman year, I took him for Bio 061 and 051. Very friendly, clear, organized, and all around great to interact with. He's takes the time to email students if they haven't been showing up to class to see if they're ok. Everyone is worried because he has a rep of being tough but he's great.
Prof. Land is a really great guy. He seems intimidating but he really just wants the best for his students. People fail because they're not ready for the amount of work a college level science course takes. Well this is a heavily pre health school. Bio isn't going to be easy. This class will prepare you for the upper division biology courses.
He's a great professor. Always takes the time to get to know his students. Yeah tests are hard and long, but he grades fairly. Takes the time to go over tests with you and explain it in terms that will help you learn it.
Lectures do not help for exams. He tests you on stuff he has never lectured on. He is unorganized. Does not upload grades, so you never know what you have in the class. Gives A LOT of work. Only positive side is that he is a nice guy and tries to get to know you.
He makes class fun. He knows everybody in the class and if you skip a class, he'll have somebody send you a picture of him looking confused as to why you weren't there. He is an excellent teacher and lets his students know exactly what he expects from us. As with any bio 61 class, it is very difficult but with work, a good grade is possible.
One of the most involved professors at UOP. Really cares about his students and goes above and beyond to make sure everyone in class understands the material. Tests are very tough however
Tests are difficult but doable. Only biology professor that has free response for every midterm. Makes you memorize A LOT
People fear him as the toughest bio prof, but passing up the chance to take Land is like throwing away a winning lottery ticket. He is extremely motivational and cares deeply about your success, which he can definitely lead you to. He sets the standards high because he knows you're capable of reaching it. His tests are not as bad as people may say.
Although he is tough, he makes you understand the material and you leave the class knowing something new
An amazing biology professor. Has great passion and knowledge for the subject and shows it in all of his lectures. Very difficult as a grader and with tests, but extremely great at teaching so the tests really shouldnt be very hard if youre paying attention and reading the chapters. always go to SI!!
Land is very passionate about biology and makes the class enjoyable! however it is very difficult to know your grade, as he does not input grades into canvas until very late in the semester. After switching to asynchronous recordings, the quality of the class declined a bit. Tests are also fairly difficult, but doable. Seek help from SI leaders!!
He has two science papers (1-page single spaces) and three midterms with one final exam. He also provides recorded lectures, but every student loves to join his class and discusses with him. I enjoyed his class:) Please don't miss SI meetings.
Dr. Land does a great job with synchronous lectures in being informative, and I can assure you that you will not be bored during them. When the class switched to an asynchronous system, it is important to keep up with the lecture videos. He is also available for office hours if you email him. Attend SIs! They are very important to your grade.
One of the best bio professors UOP has to offer. He's super easy going and easy to talk to, but he definetly is going to make you work for a good grade. Took him for 51,61, human parasitics, and infectious diseases and loved him in every class. Make sure to just participate in online discussions and be involved with the material.
switched his format from lecturing in class to giving out prerecorded lectures where he only reads out the slides. he talks abt trying to make changes to his course but is unwilling to put in the effort on his side. his exams have nothing to do with the material. most of the time i was self-studying. not worth the stress and tears yall...
This professor was quite possibly the worst professor I ever experienced. He does not teach and has you simply come in and "chat" with him for an hour. He released "zoom" videos( reads of the slides). The tests are hard and unpredictable. No office hours, and he only puts in the test grades so you won't even know your grade until grades are due.
Professor Land barely taught in class and often he would lie about what is on the test. If he says something won't be on the test, it will be, so study it harder than the things that he says will be. There is no way to study for his tests because they are different each time, the questions are too hard for his lack of teaching.
Lot of time wasted reviewing prev class material, rambling abt his undergrad days, connections to other ppl that might elevate his status. Would assign daily wrappers (lecture summary+write mcq) that were USELESS because we learned NOTHING abt micro. Test qs that took him "hrs" to make were the FIRST Quizlet result on Google. Ez A but didnt learn.
only talked about himself and his career had nothing to say about the upcoming exam and is overall a horrible lecturer as he strays from the topic often
Good person but horrible lectures which were often off topic and just reading off the slides. The exams he "spends hours making" can mostly be found in AP Bio quizlets online. Blamed the class for not "doing enough" when he opened up for criticism on his teaching. Also switched up his teaching style 2/3 through the semester which confused the class
Truly one of a kind prof, incredibly caring for his students and makes the class feel so rewarding with the work students put it. He uses the flipped learning model which I believe makes a massive difference in students success in his class (for the better ofc). He gives lots of practice problems which correlate very close to the exams so ur chil:D
Dr. Land's class is easy but if you want to learn, choose a different professor. His "lectures" are all 40 minute zoom recordings. As a result, he spends the entire class time complaining about how students are "teasing" him. Students are also left doing nothings as all his tests are based off of study guides taken from the internet.
awful
I had land for gen bio second semester. To be honest I went to class once a week (we had lecture monday, wednesday, friday). His lectures are borderline useless, sometimes he would show a film during the lecture and the exam would have 1-2 questions based on the film. His exams were similar to the homework and practice exam.
Dr. Land cares about his students. If you approach him, he will do everything he can to help you; you just have to ask. His teaching style promotes applied learning which I find more engaging than traditional teaching styles. He makes it very clear what he expects from his students and if you ask, he is more than willing to help.
I had Dr Land for Bios 061 and 051, yes, I did register to have him as my professor again. He uses a unique flipped classroom format, where you can watch videos at home and get tons of insight during lectures. Dr Land does his best to students in the need of aid, and does his best to make sure everyone is on the same page. Make sure to participate!
Dr. Land is a great professor for people wanting to understand 51/61 material fully. By the end (if you follow his pace and lecture videos), you will for sure have almost everything known to the heart. FYI: he uses a flipped classroom format, so do not fall back. His test is always fair game since he hints to you what to expect. Nothing unexpected.
Dr. Land genuinely cares about his students' success & creates a rewarding experience for those willing to put in the work! His flipped classroom model & willingness to answer questions made class engaging & helped us better understand the material! Definitely do all the problem sets he provides-they are crucial! 100% would retake his class.
Dr. Land is a great professor who happily assists his students with questions. His online parasite course provided me with interesting knowledge of various pathogens and life cycle. The projects are okay as long as you are curious about the selected parasite and you research into it. I would definitely recommend his online Human Parasite course!
Im not going to lie, land liked my class and made the exams easy. Exams were 90% reused questions from the homework, but he doesn't give homework answers. I used chat gpt on assignments and ended up getting 100 on 2 of the 3 midterms and a 95 on the other. the exam was mainly mc with 2-5 frq. frq is easy because its based on one reading he gives.
Land's class is challenging, exams need a good understanding of the topics. Must read the textbook and be active in class—ask questions and work with others. He generously offers a curve at the end. The class is very rewarding if you plan to go to grad school, you're set up for success in upper div bios and DAT/MCAT. You get out what you put in!
His flipped format is not for everyone… get ready for a ton of self studying. Knowing what I know now, I should have dropped this class for another professor. His LAs were extremely helpful, but if you ask him a question, you're better off googling it.
Kirkwood Land's class is a mixed bag - lectures can be hit or miss, but the practice exams are incredibly helpful. unstuckstudy was a great study tool alongside the course materials. Attend SIs and stay consistent, and you can do well.
Land is a frustrating professor that does not use his lecture time to teach, and considering that microbiology is very content-packed, you will not learn much. His asynch Zoom videos consist of him reading over the slides word by word, and exams are based off questions from the online textbook he uses, and not off any content he does cover.
Do the problem sets and if you're lucky they might pop up on an exam. Flipped classroom style so you have to basically teach yourself and watch the videos when you can. Read the textbook because it might help you more. Can tend to go on long tangents.
the only thing good about him is he reuses half of the questions from the previous midterms and the other half from his practice problems. in his vid lectures, he reads off the slides only (barely any information) and does not explain concepts clearly. He also doesn't seem to know his materials so don't even bother asking him conceptual questions.
He uses a flipped classroom style with no real teaching. Memorizing old exams worked better than studying, and the final no matter what is worth 30% of your grade or more with no direction on how to study for it.
Land's execution of a "flipped classroom" is poor. His video lectures are surface-level and don't really align with the depth he tests on (eg., random question on a specific enzyme we never learned about). The depth of knowledge he expects differs from what is actually learned, making it completely unfair for students.
His lectures are super base level and I had to teach myself everything in order to prepare for the tests. I struggled in this class due to poor teaching. Flipped teaching can be good but only if your professor actually has good lecture videos.
He is really passionate about the subject and his students, he likes to talk to the class however tests can sometimes be unfair because questions are very detailed and it does not come from the videos he provides. Sometimes he uses problem set questions on tests to reward students for their hardwork but it depends on class participation .
The flipped learning format wasn't personally optimal. Studying past midterms and the problem sets is your best shot of doing somewhat well, and self-studying in general. I highly rec making flashcards of some sort. PREPARE FOR THE FINAL. As long as you're reviewing the content in those past midterms and doing your problem sets, you should be fine.
Dr. Land is a great professor who cares and supports students. Many times he would give us some slack if we had a hard exam week, ect. He commonly checked in with students and made sure to get to know everybody. BIO 61 is a hard topic in general and this class is mostly self studying with the supplies he gives. Even so, Dr. Land is great!
Dr. Land works with students to optimize the class for them. Whether it is adding new portions to exams, like take home sections, or allowing us to write our own final questions, this class was always a team effort. He will meet students half way if you all put in the collective work and effort to show him that you are trying!
I have taken several classes with Dr. Land, receiving an A in all of them. While he has high expectations, he clearly states them and does everything he can to meet the student where they are and help them reach those expectations. He has a great passion for science and teaching. Study the practice exams!
Worst professor ever. Used flipped classroom method and this made it hard to learn or feel motivated to attend lecture. Didn't teach in class at all, talked about unrelated topics, offered only 30-2 hr long videos that didn't cover all material on the exams ( read the textbook fully and throughly), and warm-ups counted as extra credit.
