LOVE HIM! He explains things so well and thoroughly, and goes slow enough so that you're actually able to follow along. He's also really funny. He has good lecture notes, and posts notes in addition the the slides on powerpoint. Fair exams and very helpful in answering Q's. Definitely recommend him!
Good prof, nice guy. Murmers some times, which can be frustrating if you are trying to write what he is saying. The notes provided are usually enough, but add your own for clarity. Easy enough course
makes what would otherwise be a dry subject very interesting. very helpful, enthusiastic, and funny prof.
The mark breakdown for this class was very fair- 5 in class quizzes, two midterms, and a final. Nice to have the quizzes to take some of the weight off the final. Good prof overall
Great Prof very interesting and good at explaining. There is no textbook but you would never have to look anything up anyways. Has quizes which makes up a big chunk of your mark; they are easy as long as you actually review your material. Class is fairly straight forward. His final compared to midterms was hard do not under prepare.
Good lecturer and the presentation slides are super easy to understand.
I'm not too fond of him because he doesn't give enough practice questions and his exams are hard. It was a very stressful class for me. I loved learning genetics, but I didn't like how he didn't post the lecture before-hand. He posts them after. He is nice, though, and willing to explain in depth what you're having trouble with.
TAs are far better at explaining, the only reason to go to his lectures are for participation marks. Just read the textbook and go to the PAL sessions if you want to do well on his tests.
The most annoying thing about him: he mumbles. Nothing wrong with his English but he really needs to work on how to give efficient and effective lectures. His tests are extremely hard to for a 200 level class. Almost feels like he expects us all to be geneticists. Overall would not recommend taking a class with this prof.
King-Jones writes the worst exams. The midterms aren't worth much but are brutal and not a good representation of the course material. He posts the lecture notes after class so you have to pay attention which is extremely hard to do when you can barely hear him and he's quite monotone. If you need this class take Harrington.
He has an accent but it's the mumbling that makes it hard to understand him. He really teaches the class like you should know everything already. Very confusing and his lectures make no sense. His tests are ridiculously hard and the #2 midterm the average was 45%.
Unbelievably hard tests. Studying only helps a little bit because the questions are all about solving problems that include lots of little tricks that you would never think about. He barely tests the course material and focuses more on giving trick questions about solving problems.
As I understand it, this was his first 200 level class he has taught... and boy did it show. The midterms were absolutely brutal and by the time we got to the final, he seemed to have learned that we are not all geneticists in the class and toned down the incredibly hard application questions.
I could never understand what he was saying because it always sounded like mumbling which made it difficult to understand what was going on. I understand it is his first time teaching an undergrad 200 level class but his notes were useless in preparing you for any of his exams.
Textbook is useless, too basic. Attending class did not help. 5% iclicker though. His exams were ridiculously hard. All about application that are way above the 200 level. 2 midterms and final. All written. BRUTAL class. Avoid with him.
Kirst has never taught bio 207 until my lecture. His midterms where EXTREMELY hard (averages of 64 and 45%) which he doesn't give any study questions or any material to show what he expects of his students for the test. All of his questions are applied so if you don't know each theory inside and out, prepare to fail. This course is hard, STUDY LOTS
The hardest thing about this course was the tests. He usually teaches 300 level courses so his tests were a bit extreme. The lectures moved very quickly and he didn't post notes until after so you had to take notes very quickly as well. He did explain everything very well though, and would explain things again if students weren't understanding.
This was his first time teaching a 200 level class, and I found his exams to be exceedingly difficult, 300/400 level. Thank god for the lab or I would have failed. The exams had interesting problem solving questions that are do-able, but they're just way harder than anything you'll see in the text or in class, and the exams were too long.
One of the worst profs but most likely because it is his first time teaching a 200 level course. Was planning on taking GENET 270 next term but I did not have the basic foundation and knowledge in 207. GENET 270 is now out of the ball for me because I did not do well in this course.
He seems to get on people's bad sides after the first midterm but going to his office hours can really change that. He explains everything very well and makes it look a lot easier than at first. He does not cover much material however the material he covers, he expects you to know in dept.
Midterm questions were not unreasonable, there were just a lot of questions packed into a short amount of time. He doesn't post the notes before the class however there isn't much he mentions in class that can't be found on the slides or in the textbook. As someone who has never taken a 300 or 400 level bio I thought the tests seemed reasonable
KKJ may have gotten a bad rep for his poorly designed midterm exams, but he took strides to make up for it (scaling the midterm averages, providing review sessions, and creating a very fair final exam). I rest assured that he will learn from his mistakes, and will make future exams much better. The content was well explained, and straightforward.
Awful. Reason I've decided to not major in biology anymore. He makes the material boring and makes the course so much worse than it needs to be. Lectures are painfully boring, he is monotone, reads off slides, goes way to slow. If you truly like biology, highly recommend not taking him.
Lectures can be horrifying if you're already sleep deprived and your grip on emotions and reality have already left you. That being said, once you get engaged in the topics you'll see that his lecture notes are very well written. Multiple practice questions are given, key slides for exams are provided. I look forward to having his class again :)
I though KKJ was a great prof - explained material quite well and his ppts covered all the topics thoroughly. His tests are quite difficult though - fully written with lots of problem solving but he does provide lot of practice questions that are similar to the exam ones (help outside of class was great as well) and he does scale the exams. solid
He's a nice guy. His tests? not so much. He teaches one thing, and tests on a totally different application. Very hard to know how to prepare for his exams, and even if you feel good, the tests are brutal. Final wasn't bad, but midterms were very difficult. Wouldn't take any of his classes again.
I enjoyed KKJ notes style. The first midterm was straightforward. The second was tricker, mostly by the way he worded things but the final was much better and very fair. He provided lots of practice questions which were very helpful and the lectures went at a very good pace. He focusses on classic genetics rather than bio tech which I preferred.
Course is set up with intermittent in class quizzes that are definitely not something to skip. In class participation was super helpful for the preparation for the quizzes and the midterm. Kirst has a sense of humour that makes learning genetics more manageable. Definitely will take another course of his.
If you have insomnia take this class you will be cured. This man is so boring his voice can put you to sleep instantly. He takes something as interesting as genetics and makes it so boring with his monotone voice and bare slides. Would take this course with a different prof.
Dr. Kirst King-Jones is a perfect instructor by his passion on genetics. However, if you want to get a good grade on his test is really difficult since his exam includes many things we cannot learn from class and his last midterm average was only 40%. The questions on the exam which I run out off time to consider, still incorrect.
The sample questions done in class do not reflect at all what is on the midterms. The midterms can't be finished in the time allowed, and the midterm average was 40%. Does not "believe" in practice questions or practice tests so you're on your own. Would not recommend to anyone wanting to pass this course.
He gets a bad rep for his exams, but honestly if you go over his lecture notes you should be fine. The exams are written, but I don't find the questions to be unfair. Listen in class to what he emphasizes! He seems somewhat intimidating, but if you actually talk to him he's very helpful and cares for his students.
I love this prof. Hes really nice, tries to be funny and make the course fun. But its not easy at all. To do well on the midterms you have to really understand concepts, not just memorize lectures. Tophat questions for bonus points and the midterms arent worth a lot which is good because the averages are usually in the 50s.
The concepts covered in class are quite easy, but the application of concepts on the midterms were way beyond a 200 level. Final was better, and fairer, but watch out for the midterms, they were rough.
Tests were very application based and never directly tested content. If you didnt completely understand the concept it would be almost impossible to pass.
Dr. King-Jones exams were mostly application based, made up of written problem solving questions. He is, however, really friendly, and accessible. He provided key slides/topics before exams, and scaled midterm two up by 8 marks. The lab also makes up 40% of your grade, which is beyond his control. Do practice genetics problems and youll be fine.
Material is very interesting and fairly straight forward but the lectures sucked. Monotone and mumbly. midterms were brutal - although the final was much fairer. The text book was not that helpful - required readings were broad, KKJ used different terminology than the book, and some topics were not in the reading list so you had to look for them
Dr. King-Jones' focus was mainly on heredity rather than molecular genetics. I'm kind of mad at how he emphasized the importance of having a copy of textbook, while said himself after the second midterm that we should be more carefully reviewing the slides than reading the textbook. Decent prof if you are enthusiastic about hereditary patterns.
I found Dr. King-Jones to be an interesting lecturer and genuinley enjoyed the materials and coming to class; however, the exams were beyond brutal. They were problem-solving heavy, but to the point that it was nearly impossible to finish the midterms on time (the second of which had a 40% average). A very difficult class to do well in.
Dr. King-Jones is a great guy! I'm writing this comment mostly because I see a lot of people dumping on him but he really is great. The material of the course is a little hard and you definitely have to study or else you won't do well. His second midterm was very hard but he was fair about it and boosted everyone up. He is a fair guy. Take him
I enjoyed this class and this prof!
KingJones is not at all engaging, is unhelpful during class discussions, spends most of class talking like the students are not even there. He gives no practice for the first midterm and very little practice for the second midterm and final, and the practice questions he does give are completely unrelated to class. I love Biol, but I don't with him
WAAYY better than I expected! King-jones mostly tests on his lectures and gives detailed and very useful notes, pay attention in class you'll know what's coming on the midterms. He also grades fairly (you can go to him if you want anything remarked), but does tend to have high expectations. I'd recommend if you like biology and want to learn a lot
his tests will end your university career. Couple midterms with averages sitting around 35-40% and a final with an average around 40%. Notes make zero sense and he is no help outside of class. avoid at all costs
I took biol 207 with Dr KKJ back in the fall of 2017. Interesting class and friendly, helpful prof, but my god his tests are hard. If you need to get As for pre-X, Y or Z definitely avoid this prof, but if you're just a bio major who can afford a B or B- then there's no reason not to take his class.
KKJ is hands-down the best genetics prof I have ever had. I used to hate genetics before I took this class. He takes his time explaining concepts, does not care about details and makes analogies and drawing to help explain difficult parts of the course. Tests are not hard at all if you go to every lecture. He will not try to trick you.
A pretty solid prof, really nice guy. Tests are not very hard as long as you focus on problem solving rather than memorizing things. The lab is a huge component though and really is what makes or breaks you in this course. (especially depending on the TA you get)
KKJ is a nice guy, but not a nice lecturer. HIs lectures are dry and hard to follow. His midterms are ridiculously hard with all problem solving questions, but his final is fairer. The lab is easy if you put the work into it, which you should since it is the only way to boost your grade after his brutal midterms. Avoid if you need an A
Definitely not a super easy course but KKJ is clear that you need to understand concepts to problem-solve rather than just memorize words/facts. His midterms were super fair, & you get marks for online participation. His final felt pretty brutal though to be honest. I never went to office hours, but I've heard he's nice & understanding
I enjoyed the class as well as the lecture, i thought both the midterms were very fair but the final seemed to be much more difficult.
Personally not my fav, lectures were hard to follow and I had difficulties getting through the online videos. Midterms were very hard imo and he gives you very little time to do them and he says its to "prevent cheaters" but we're given a cheatsheet for every exam so like.... that doesn't add up. also i took biol 207 not genet304. overall cool dude
Dr. King-Jones does an excellent job of explaining genetics concepts during lectures but he is a troll when it comes to exams and throws in some very challenging problems on them. His class was quite the experience.
Pretty hard exams but the prof is fair because he scales them to give a 65% average for the class. Nice asynchronous lectures that explained material pretty well. So much better than other some other profs during covid. organized. might take a while to respond. respect him cause he is so fair (in the scaling of exams).
Not a bad dude. I loved the course and the material taught, and he has a good sense of humour. He delivered the material nicely and the course was organized. Tests are hard and emphasize the application of concepts, but they are scaled. Does not reply to all emails or forum questions though, which was annoying.
Dr. King-Jones was a pretty good prof (and he was the only prof to make me laugh this semester while watching his lectures so that's always a plus). His explanations are usually pretty good, you just need to make sure you understand for yourself. Exams are a time crunch but he scales them pretty nicely. And go to PAL sessions! They actually help
Overall, he is an alright professor in terms of content and is somewhat funny. His online course delivery is VERY boring, to say the least, and the lectures are 30-50 minutes in length. Not sure how he is in person, but his exams were extremely difficult if you were to study how you would normally. Averages were in the 40s and had to be scaled up.
Dr. King-Jones is a real gem! I very much enjoyed his lectures, as they were in-depth and full of funny anecdotes. His midterms were rather tight on time but I felt they were good indicators of how much I understood the course. The final was very fair too imo. Although the lab component almost ruined my grade, KKJ's exams definitely pulled through!
Professor Kirst King Jones was an excellent Professor. His exams were very application based, but he provides many opportunities to study for them: the textbook and its practice questions, pre-exam questions, weekly TA sessions to go through questions.. The tests are fair. The lectures were entertaining and he responds to emails quickly!
Dr. King-Jones doesn't do a great job of breaking down the difficult topics and his lectures can be quite heavy and boring. That being said he is a good prof and he is passionate about biology. The midterms were very difficult and not made to be finished. The final exam was very easy though. Buying a online textbook is required for participation.
The course is heavy, you need to really work for it. But he was so hilarious. Can you imagine he kept the straight face while teaching a topic he named "sex, drugs, and how to keep on rocking". Those small anecdotes made the course much more bearable.
Bro, this guy is the sweetest kindest prof I have taken at the u of a so far. god bless him and his soul. the exam averages are quite low but the questions are all fair and not only is the class curved but the exams are also scaled. there is also homweork which is pretty much free marks if you do it
Nicest prof ever! Exams r tough but it's a bio course so you'll have to work hard. Scales exams based on class avg to give every1 a fair mark. Really cares for students & wants them to do well & pass the course. Textbook hw is free marks. Overall a great prof & much better than what the ratings say. Take him, you'll do fine if u put in the effort!
Beware of this guy's tests! Not easy. Lectures are very very dry and his course is very disorganized. He has homework assignments that go along with the textbook (which is mandatory) but he does not align them to his lecture content. His lectures are never aligned to the lab content either.
I never struggled with genetics until I took this class with King-Jones. His tests are way too difficult for a second year course, He evens says they are not meant to be finished to "prevent cheating." Additionally he does not explain concepts well at times. Avoid this prof!
The course is definitely content heavy and difficult, however he makes it bearable to work with. The textbook quizzes are free marks and the lab makes up a very heavy portion of the course. The exams are very difficult if youre not 100% with the material, but hes always available for feedback and is really caring! And answers emails really fast!
I walked into this class thinking that I was not going to like Dr King-Jones, but he ended up being my favorite prof this sem. I genuinely enjoyed his lectures and the syllabus, he was fantastic at explaining things. If you actually put in the work to read the textbook and learn from your mistakes, its a great class. Hard exams, but beneficial.
Pros: slides are super detailed, he's nice enough, will answer forums regularly and quickly so don't be afraid to ask questions. Adjusts grades after exams to help the class. Homework is mandatory but helpful. Cons: lectures are long, he just reads off the slides. Exams are extremely difficult, too long for the time limit, and have lots of math.
Dr. Jones genuinely wants you to succeed in his course and responds with detailed answers in the forum. With that being said, practice is everything. Make sure you fully understand the molecular techniques and CRISPR since those areas were heavily tested. Watch his lectures carefully and leave at least a week of prep before the final ;)
As far as biology professors go Kirst is pretty good, of course the material is hard but his slides are very comprehensible and he tries to make it engaging. The exams are very difficult, I would only recommend taking this class if you are detail oriented, otherwise you might not survive the exams.
Dr King-Jones is one of my favourite professors! His lecture style takes a couple of classes to get used to, but once you do his lectures are incredible. He focuses more on application rather than memorization, but his lectures are great at connecting information so you understand it. He also assigns achieve questions, but I found them helpful.
King-Jones is an ok prof but I'd recommend taking another prof for 207. Tests are hard but he does adjust marks for each midterm/final. He comes off sort of standoffish in the question forums. Didn't upload our final exam marks and only uploaded the letter grade more than a week later. study the epoll questions he gives and go to the pal sessions.
Literally the best prof I have ever had. The midterms were very fair and closely resembled practice questions. Lectures were fantastic, especially epoll questions. Truly an inspirational professor.
He is funny, passionate, and extremely intelligent. If you want to do good, you have to work for it. He will be there to support you and help you out, but you need to work and put some effort. Some say he's not good because his exams are hard, but at the end of the day you are learning hard topics that require proper understanding and effort.
He assigns so much Achieve homework that is worth a total of 10% of the overall grade. Most Achieve questions are completely unrelated to lecture and exam content and are purely there to make you think about Biology. LAZY PROF, is not even bothered to teach what is necessary to complete the homework questions before their due date.
I suggest taking Harrington instead for BIOL 207, King Jones' lectures are very informative but his exams especially the final was on hard topics he didn't teach us how to tackle which was unfair, too many Achieve HW questions on topics that aren't even discussed in class, lectures are not synchronous w/ labs so u never fully know what's going on.
a nice and genuine person, and his midterms were very fair for testing on course content. however, the final was completely unfair. Lots of stuff tested was not on his checklist and the cheat sheets ended up being completely useless. Most questions on this final were also not addressed in class.
FINAL EXAM WAS UNREASONABLE!! Even with a detailed cheat sheet I felt like I could barely answer any of the questions. Some of them were out of context and he give achieve practice questions that don't really relate to the lecture. Prof isn't bad but the exams are not worth it. Lecture content was so easy so idk where he pulled these questions from
Dr. Kirst King Jones was very funny and a kind guy, it did seem that he genuinely wanted his students to do well, and that was reflected in his lectures and midterm exams. Grades were scaled and midterms were VERY fair. However, the final was completely different, as he tested concepts he had NEVER covered in lecture!! Very unexpected :(
Lots of online homework, which is good for practice, but annoying because it doesn't always line up with lectures. It took me a lot of time to sort out what I needed to learn
His lectures were really engaging, and he was a fun prof. His test were really hard, and he used Achieve for his homework assignments which I didn't like. The achieve assignments were really time consuming, and irrelevant to the course so that was not good. But otherwise, I really enjoyed the class.
While I truly did love Dr. King Jones, the final exam was extremely unfair. Even though he allowed a detailed cheat sheet, it still felt very overly complicated since there were questions that did not line up with anything taught. Also, he uses achieve for homework, and it doesn't really relate to the lecture content. Midterms were fair!
Good professor, friendly, and obviously cared a lot about what he was teaching. There was quite a bit of homework that did not line up with his lecture, so you had to teach yourself some content to get them done. The midterms pretty fair, and lined up with what we learned, but the final was pretty tough. More than enough time for all exams.
He was a decent prof I liked that most of whatever was important was already on his slides because sometimes he would go off on tangents. Midterms were really fair. He would even give hints in class too. Final was terrible tho. Some questions we didn't even cover in class lmfao. The achieve was alright but be prepared to spend hours on it...
As a person who enjoys genetics and learning about it, I was excited for 304, but this class was the most challenging class I have taken. Exams and quizzes go beyond what is taught in the class to the point where some questions asked are not even in the notes. If you miss one class it is tough to catch up because of the amount covered in each class
Nice guy but exams were kinda bleh.
good professor, funny, passionate, really smart but a bit monotone so the lectures can make you sleepy. he really tries to help us understand with videos and drawings and moving diagrams to help explain concepts. he did run out of time for the last lecture and gave us 2 hrs of videos, which is sort of hard to watch when ur studying for 5 finals.
People rarely give 2/5's.
……..Eh.
Doesn't give you clear guidelines for what is on the test. The questions on the final were horrendous, they weren't discussed in class at all. Avoid at all costs.
Final exam was hilariously difficult
The exams were quite difficult and on very niche topics that were only briefly discussed. You are required to complete achieve homework that is unrelated to course content and is costly. This course won't set you up for success, take a different prof.
