Unless you like spending 72 hours on paper do not take her
she is ridiculously hard and this is from someone who (usually) likes english class.

Mrs. Burkart rocks. She is an extremely intelligent, cool, laid back teacher. She always has great topics to get the class involved in.

She's a nice teacher unless you miss a class and the included assignments; then she's unforgiving.Since writing is my forte I got an A in the class, although I know many others received a B or lower. There's always some kinda in-class work or an assignment due.She does try to help you do your best.
Nice body, good teaching.
she is so not a good teacher and she does not try to help you what so ever. i missed a class and i went to her for help and she said she could not help me. so dont take her as a teacher!!!!!!!!

She is intelligent, educated, well informed, and deadly sexy when she shows some legs! Hot haircut too! Takes time to clarify assigments and to answer questions after grading. Recommended!
mrs burkart sucks.she is the worst teacher i ever had. she also has a really bad attitude problem unless you are one of her favorites.
She was not good at conveying her message! She told me I was an excellent wrtier yet my grade did not reflect that...this was my first "C" in an English class!!!

Quick to praise during proofreading in class-but turns into a toughie in final drafts. Took Eng 112 with Brandon Wooten-much better experience
Quick to praise during proofreading in class-but turns into a toughie in final drafts. Took Eng 112 with Brandon Wooten-much better experience
She sucks!!!! She grade very hard.
Very hard class to take. Make sure you take your papers to the writing center.
This teacher was the hardest teacher I've had at Wake Tech. Dont take her class. She is a very hard grader. I never made above a 79 on a paper, and I like English.

She is really tough on the papers, but if you take the time to do research and to make them the best that you can, your effort will be rewarded. Other than that, she was really nice and willing to help you.
I loved British Lit before taking this class, but wasn't impressed with the way things were taught. She tried hard in lectures, but nobody really grasped what was going on. Also, no structure for out of class work, making it hard to keep on top of things.
She is really tough on grading. I used one paper from my eng 111 class which i had gotten an A on but, even after making improvements, i still got a C with her.
I could tell she loved what she does, but sometimes took it way to far. I always got really bad grades on all of my papers. I even got help from the ILC. Never seemed to be enough for her.
I really did like her as a person, but not as a teacher. She was very hard to follow and gave little to no feedback or structure when it came to outside work. I did ask for help several times and just felt as if I were a burden or bothering her. I've heard the same for most of the people who took this class. I wouldn't recommend her.
It was difficult, but worth it. The assigned readings were of high quality, and the presentation really allowed for personal creativity. Do not take if your writing skills are average or below.
She has a very strict grading policy.
VERY strict grader!!!!!!! I felt like she was grading me as if I wanted to be an English major....which I am so not! Very nice person, very hard teacher! Only if you HIGHLY excel at English would I recommend taking this class.
Very nice person, but she is a very hard teacher....
Nice person, Needs to relax more. Don't take her class unless u are wanting a real hard teacher. Her grading sucks. She doesn't help u at all. I went to the writing center and she told me to read the book, but yet I have already.
Very tough at grading papers, but offers bonus help/points after you get them back to improve on your writing. Her lectures were a blast, she has a great sense of humor. Dont take her unless you are good at writing!
Really tough at grading papers
Very picky, received a D on my first 2 assignments and i've always been a straight A student, i think she enjoys giving bad grades, she talks about it like its a joke! Had to drop the class, couldnt afford to put in the time and effort to fail the class!
I have had to spend MANY MANY hours on papers to earn my A's. She grades like the class is full of Eng majors instead of taking a required class. She also blew me off once when I needed help, and obliged another time, so you never know. Terrible sense of humor. Generally seems like she feels VERY SELF-IMPORTANT. Would not recommend AT ALL. Pompous
DOOO NOOTT TAKE HER. she is an okay teacher when it comes to the class lecture, but she needs to be a higher level english teacher. she grades like there is no tomorrow. she is hateful when you go try and get help from her. i had to drop her class and i know many others that had to, too.
DO NOT TAKE THIS WOMAN! She acts like this is the only class I'm taking and I have months to write every paper. Blah. Her class is interesting, but she is way too hard.
Not a terrible teacher but not great either. She grades papers like a Harvard professor. She literally told our class that shes NEVER given an A on a paper.
She is arrogant and unhelpful-provides no feedback on grades. She told us she rarely gives As and when she does it's because a student starts a paper a month before due and makes several trips to the writing center for revision-who has time for 13 trips to the writing center? Seems to me that's not really a student writing a paper anyway.
I do not recommend taking her class. She fails you on every assignment (even someone like me, who makes straight A's), and does not make any attempt to help her students.
Insightful Teacher who knows how to guide the class to the right directions. The only downfall; she really DOES NOT get into writing aspects at all. This was strictly a writing class but never a time when she really gone over the graded assignments. The class time was there to discuss random stuff NOT a single guideline on HOW TO WRITE.
She is an incredibly fun teacher, and she really made the class enjoyable. While I would not recommend taking her class if you're only interested in easy A's, I would definitely suggest her if you're interested in literature.
I was really excited about school and English, until I took her class. She gave good lectures, but she never tells you what she actually wants! Her grading scale is absurd and she is not very helpful or friendly. I would NEVER take this class if you are trying to maintain all A's because she does not give them.
Teacher's lectures are fine. clarity of what she wants, not so clear. Failed my research paper and she gave little explanation why she gave me an F. I did not enjoy the class.
Grades HORRIBLY! I usually do well in english but I ended up getting D's and C's on all the papers in this class, no matter how long and hard I worked on them. No one got A's on papers in my class. Only thing that brought my grade up was random assignments.
She can be a hard grader, but she is clear on what she expects from students. She is extremely helpful during her office hours and ILC times. Be prepared to work, but she's funny and a great professor!
Ms. Burkart is the hardest English teacher I have ever had. Her lectures are good, and she seems easy going. DO NOT LET THIS FOOL YOU! She is an EXTREMELY hard research paper grader. No matter how hard you work, it does not make a difference in your grade. I spent HOURS on a paper. Everyone that read it said that is was AWESOME, got 78%!
I have never been bad at writing papers, but when taking this class it became clear that she grades on everything grammar, and sructure on her papers. She told us she has never given an "A" in her entire career. Never got above a "C" no matter how hard I worked and asked for help. Wouldn't recommend this teacher to anyone that isn't an Eng. buff.
This instructor needs to teach at a doctoral level and dress like she's running for office. Her jokes are not funny and her test totally different from what you study for. I really don't see why she teach class there. She never explains things like you should already know the material before you get to her class.
If you are willing to settle for a grade lower than an A go for it. Not a single person has been able to receive in A in her class. Her office hours make it impossible to meet with her and talk about your paper. The class is based more on class discussions, and the only grades you get are from papers.Be advised, this teacher is not recommended.
Lectures are interesting and informative. Very few grades during the course: a few quizzes 15%, two research papers 45%, midterm 20%, and final exams 20%. However, she grades harshly on papers. If you aren't a strong writer, find another teacher. If you are wanting an A or B, find another teacher.
I hated this class, and I usually like English. Nice lady but grades way too hard and is not very sure on what she wants out of your papers and isn't very helpful. Failed her class but I took the same English the next semester with a different instructor and got a A. Save your GPA and do not take her
I was aware before taking her class that she was a tough, but I'm such a great writer I knew I'd pass with a B. Her grading is the worst! For the first assingment, I went to her 3 times, still got a D! Second assignment which is worth 30% of my grade, I decided to only go to the ILC and I got F on that! Never dealt with such a confusing teacher!!!
Great teacher. Is very willing to help her students and tries to make her lectures fun and interesting. Her class is easy, but only if you put the work towards it and if she sees that you are trying. There is a good amount of reading but she goes over it in class. She likes participation and will call on you in class. Very pleasant person.
Although she grades tough, she spends a lot of time going over exactly what she wants on the papers and gives plenty of opportunities for help. So, if you do poorly on a paper, its almost your fault. She is hilarious and encourages class participation. Would definitely recommend her and take her classes again.
Dr. Burkart gives amazing feedback. She let me redo the first paper I submitted for a better grade--initially, I had gotten a 70, and after the redo, she gave me an 80. She was incredibly helpful when I had questions during office hours, agreed to give me letters of recommendation, had interesting things to lecture on, and was overall very kind.
Mrs. Burkart is an EXCELLENT teacher. I learned a lot from her class and I love her lectures. The material covered is very interesting and I truly got so much out of this class. The only down side is there are 4 papers and she is a tough grader! You really have to work hard for your grade but she is more than willing to help you as long as you ask!
The essay topics were very controversial and easy to write about, but her opinion is the only one that's valid during class discussions. There are no power points or in class work, and I thought I was good at writing essays until she expected me to be an expert writer without actually teaching me anything other than what her opinion was. Beware.
She is very nice, but her explanations aren't the best sometimes. Her papers are very easy topics, but her explanations make the paper so much more complicated. Also, she talks for the whole hour/ hour and half in her class. I did not really learn much. Also, what you get on your first few assignments will probably be your class grade.
American Literature can be a rough class to take at 8am. However, I enjoyed the lectures for this class. She is a fair grader and a professor you can learn a lot from, but be ready to read! If you take this class, you must be willing to read the assigned readings! It is American lit after all.
Assignments outside of the 3 essays seem to be haphazardly thrown together last minute. Grading criteria is vague and as far as student engagement goes, seems to be decided on her whim. She will often bring up controversial topics for discussion- her opinion is what matters. You will be responsible for teaching yourself.
Professor Burkart plays clear favorites. Grading criteria is vague and assignments are not well thought out. Lectures are extremely circular and rambling. If you take this class in the morning, you will fall asleep and lose participation points!
Grading criteria is unclear and assignments seem thrown together last minute. Classes are lecture heavy and often end up to 15 minutes early. If you want to learn something, take this class with another professor.
I didn't learn anything about writing research papers in this class. Mrs. Burkart talks the entire time and often ends class early. Don't waste your time or money. Take the class with another professor.
Lecture isnt too bad. Shell get off topic a bit but you have to read the book. I got an A in Eng 111 and 112 and her grading was very critical and seemed unfair.
Class is all lecture, you have reading quizzes every class period. Gives no guidance on assignments. Will tell you one thing and then does another. I do not recommend this teacher.
Shes Awful
She's great as a person, but as a professor not necessarily. She grades extremely hard, but she gives good feedback. I have heard that if you go to her office hours, at the end of the semester she will bump you up a few points. So overall, you're going to have to suck up to her to at least get a C if anything. I have had a C the whole semester.
Before this class, I wasn't a strong writer or reader. All I wanted was a C. This class isn't about knowing the stories but thinking critical about them. I had to read & work hard for a A or B. Once my attitude changed, I started to seek help from the help centers as well as Ms. Burkart. In turn, my grade changed. I had a D, but I'm now a SOLID B.
Only two essays for the entire semester and a couple minor assigments. lectures are absolutely useless. Extremely tough grader. I went into the class never having gotten below a 94 in an english class to struggling to get an A. She will not round up at the end of the semester. Horrible grading scale (65, 75,85, 95)
I've never received anything below a B in any English course before Burkhart. In her class she failed my first 2 essays. She talks about herself mostly, and never the subject or writings. Only plus is she doesn't care about attendance, feel free to walk in 30 minutes late.
Don't take this class with this Professor unless you want to fail English.
Prof Burkart was hands down the most challenging teacher I've ever had, and that? That. Was. A. Good. Thing. Want to improve your academic writing? Take her class. Listen to what she says during lecture, because she'll you exactly what she wants to see on your paper. Her exercises are excellent. Easy As don't happen here. Easily my favorite prof.
I loved this class and Burkart. She is definitely heavy on the lecturing but I found her lectures to be interesting and informative. The instructions on what she wants to you to do are very specific but I think that's a plus. I want specific. Not vague. If you LISTEN to what she wants & utilize her office hours you will have no problem passing.
Seriously, what is going on with this professor? She is way too proud. Why would a teacher ever brag about never giving As? Four-year colleges are competitive enough. The last thing I need is for this class to drag my GPA. especially since I'm a computer science major. Take ANYONE else. She will proudly give you a C even if you're a strong writer.
The worst English professor I've ever had. She grades VERY toughly on a 65-75-85-95 scale (no grades in between). I've gotten A's in every English class I've taken at Wake Tech (111, 232, 242) besides ENG 112 with her. Also, she doesn't care about students or teaching. I was forced to take her, so if you have a choice, please don't.
I don't understand how anyone could get an A with her, especially in an online setting. Even when assignments are executed perfectly and only positive assignment feedback is offered from her, she is allergic to giving 100's on anything. This is frustrating because all of her instructions would receive C's for content, typos and lack of clarity. wow
PARTICIPATION MATTERS. Can't stress that enough. She is a tough grader, but if you put in the work & take her annotations respectfully (she IS an argument & research professor, expect her to be honest) then you'll do well. English class has a rep for being an easy A bc it's subjective, but a RESEARCH class, is not subjective - it's based on facts.
American Literature is already a challenging class. But this teacher is seriously STRICT when it comes to grading work.
I think Ms. Burkart could have been a great teacher had her grading criteria been more clear! There few to no guides, examples, or anything for students to use to truly understand the material! There was a lot of assuming in the class and defiantly a "teach yourself" class so to speak. Don't expect her to teach you ANYTHING! Beware and prepared!
Willing to review papers before they're due--gives great feedback. if you're looking for an A, beware. She kind of kneecaps you--highest grade she gives is a 95. You will have to work hard in this class and put in effort if you want to succeed. It's an english class so of course there's a bunch of papers. Took online, asynchronous.
Only grades papers and is a tough grader. You can only get a 55, 65, 75, 85, or 95 on your papers no exceptions and she does not give much indication in class on how she wants you to write them
Do not take this class. Her grading style is not based on points but on a "holistic" level, meaning if she didn't like what you wrote, she wasn't going to give you a good grade. She told us up front to not expect more than a 70 on essays. If you are taking her for credits, go with another teacher. Would NOT reccomend to anyone.
I would not recommend this professor to anyone! If you can get any other professor, do it. I have a history of being a good writer and have the ability to clearly articulate my ideas. However, she did not agree. After going to the ILC, and asking for help I still couldn't get a good grade from her. Her grading style is ridiculous and unclear.
Take this class with her if your up for a challenge. Burkart is a harsh grader but she grades fast and gives feedback. Your overall grade will be based on just 4 papers and final. So if your willing to study hard and go to ILC tutoring and WRITE NOTES DOWN, and ask questions you can pass with at least a B.
Awful grader. Does not believe in giving 100's because nobody is perfection and a 100 means perfection. On the very first day she talks about "if you get a C in my class, it's like getting an A in english111". Plays favorites heavily. Choose ANY OTHER PROFESSOR!! Nice lady to a certain extent, but way too political for an English class.
She dropped me from the class for writing about the COVID-19 vaccine being effective. No warning or anything just next week dropped never contacted me. That was the first assignment, and she gave me a 60 for "bad research" .
You've gotta participate in the lectures, otherwise, there's no dialogue for the class to be interesting. Get the papers done a week early and submit it for review, the feedback provided will allow you to get one letter grade higher than if you had waited until the last day.
Professor Burkart is a caring and understanding professor. She is willing to help. the only thing I can tell you is that roughly 80% of you class grade is defined by 4 separate grades (midterm, essay 1, essay 2, and your final) if you think you can handle that that I can guarantee that your semester with her will be WONDERFUL
Burkart is a great teacher but gives a 75% on all her assignments. I went through many hoops to improve my papers to get the same grade every time. She can be good to get along with and was an enjoyable person, yet the grading was the major issue. There were 4 papers and that was the only assignment.
