Kirsten is an amazing instructor. She is extremely clear and communicates the course with a lottt of enthusiasm. Easy to pay attention and even if you don't like English/Poetry, you will definitely enjoy it a lot more after this class. Keep up with the readings and take lots of notes otherwise the quizzes will be difficult.
Great teacher, interesting class. Hopefully she'll keep teaching here!
She is a great teacher, she truly cares about her students. While the material could be a little dry, she did her best to make it more interesting and ensure everyone knew what was important. The class did have a participation grade so attendance was important. As long as you take decent notes and do the readings you should get a good mark!
The professor was demonstratively unprepared for this class. Discussions were half-hearted with many a "uhm" and "yeah" on her part. She is very knowledgeable in the field, but seemed to struggle in the aspect of teaching it with any passion or interest. Meeting with her was impossible, the only help I could receive was via email.
She is obviously passionate about what she teaches, and is enthusiastic about the material. That being said, she assigns texts which are very long, and never goes into any depth or allows for discussion and insight into the many themes and ideas that she lectures on about the texts. Expect to have a very very broad understanding of the material.
Kirsten is a good prof, though I feel as if she is slightly uncomfortable lecturing still. She is amazing one on one and provides very good verbal and written feedback. Lectures can be dense as is the material. Still a great person and helpful prof!
Great prof. Our theme was the figure of the witch, although odd at first, she really picked some great texts. Many questions off the midterm and final were straight from lecture discussion, so attending class is very helpful in the long run. Assignments and papers were graded fairly with feedback, open to discuss during office hours or by email!
Inglis was a pretty great prof. Our topic for English was all about witches and she had an extensive grasp on the matter. She was in my opinion a pretty awesome grader. Her final consisted of questions she asked in class so if you were there and listened you got the points. Super great person. Also I like her black hair. It's great.
Fantastic prof, you can tell that she actually liked teaching. I was lucky enough to get her, it was the only class open and it just said "staff". The topic was pretty great too, it was witchcraft. She marks surprisingly fast too and marks it fairly and gives you a lot of feedback.
Lectures are in a classroom setting with Kirsten Inglis for English 201. Classroom is a good setting for this class because it allows some participation and questions. She is an effective teacher, really insightful on the readings. Really listens to what students say. Like any first year English course, lots of reading to be done unfortunately.
Great teacher. Takes time to read students work and provides valuable feedback. The course is well organized. Not an easy marker, but if you are willing to work hard, your grade will reflect it.
Kirsten teaches some difficult material, Middle English lit is a hard topic but she has an extensive knowledge of the topic and answers questions with expertise and kindness. She is understanding and gives pretty decent feedback, but we were only marked on 4 things and the grades took a while to return.
You can really tell she's knowledgeable and passionate in what she does. Course material was dry at times but some lectures were surprisingly interesting. Grades really hard - never received anything more than a B and it wasn't just me cause I talked to others in the class. Lots of reading. Definitely not a GPA booster. Posts powerpoints on d2l.
Kirsten is a really down-to-earth, caring instructor. She is very passionate about what she does and makes the students feel comfortable with any text she presents you with. A lot of reading in a short amount of time, but that's pretty expected. Also the final is all MC which is super nice. Wish I could have her again!
I found the texts that she made us read were actually very interesting, the beginning of the course was dry with the poetry unit but that's to be expected in an english course. She's a very nice person but she isn't willing to give extentions unless it's for a serious reason. Her feedback on the papers was helpful, overall pretty decent class!
Kirsten is a very kind professor that is passionate about what she teaches. Compared to English teachers I've had in the past, she is a tough grader when it comes to the essays. There is a lot of reading, but in general they were interesting reads.
It's English. She is a very good Prof. who is clear about her expectations on quizzes/tests and the essays. The essays are all take home but she marks them pretty hard (try to confirm with her what you want to write about during her office hours). The D2l quizzes and final exam were also MC which was nice. Make sure to read the books thoroughly.
Dr. Inglis is a kind and caring professor that is clear in her expectations. While English is one of my least favorite classes, she does a good job of making the material interesting. Two assigned essays which seems not too bad for an English course, she marks tough but fair.
This lady is a gem, shes a solid English prof at the U of C. Shes super kind and understanding and is extremely reasonable when it comes to marking. I hated English (Im a math major) until I had her class.
Extremely hard grader. Only take this class if you like Shakespeare and reading every night. She is very professional and caring but makes it difficult to achieve good grades.
This course is easier than English 30 for sure. Lots of reading. There's also an attendance sheet passed around at the start of the class for everyone present. Surprise quizzes which are way too difficult, also a hard marker. As long as you're willing to put in the work, you will do fine.
She lacks a lot of the negatives regular ENGL teachers would have. She passes the vibe check but she is also a very hard maker. Unless ur gifted at essays don't expect more than a B+ (good class if ur not looking for a 4.0)
I regret taking her class. As an international student, I find Shakespeare quite hard to understand. She even made it harder and put high expectations in her program. Also, she is a tough grader.
Be ready to put in some work. There are not many assignments, however, if you dont stay caught up with the readings it will hurt you for the final and final paper. The course is set up very strategically, so stay on track and youll learn something. Also, she makes herself accessible outside of class, which is super helpful
I needed an English course as a prerequisite so I tried to find the least challenging English course as I'm not the best at English and if you put the effort into this class you'll get a decent grade. If you're an English genius you'll get As If not B+ is as good as it gets.
Professor Inglis is incredibly kind and fair. She is there to see her students succeed and wants tot answer your questions and get feedback. Her marking wasn't overly difficult and most of her lectures were engaging. Considering COVID has been a tough teaching style, she's doing a great job at caring for her students and taking their needs to heart
Dr. Inglis was very nice and organized when it came to her lectures. She had a clear and is specific with what you have to learn. Be ready to write, she makes you write 2 essay and the final is an essay format. Not too bad for an English class, she's super understanding and cares about her students.
I don't know who said she was caring so far she hasn't shown any care for people struggling.
She was an extremely hard marker. BEWARE.
NOT ACCESSIBLE OUT OF CLASS BARELY RESPONDS TO EMAILS.
I get it, it's online and it's a spring class. Despite this, there seems to be no effort in actually making the course coherent and nothing was reduced. We have lectures once a week and we barely learn about how to write essays and we barely skim the topics of the book of the week. I hate English already and this class makes me hate it more.
Its a spring online covid course... but nothing has been really done to facilitate students. there is ar to much reading for a simple 1.5 month spring course. 3 novels, short stories n a bunch of poems. I hated english in highschool and this course is making me hate it more especially with Inglis as the prof.
Worst prof I ever had. not understanding at all. Marks as if we have PhDs in English. Asked her to come up with a thesis statement and it was worse than the one I came up with myself
DO NOT TAKE CLASSES WITH THIS PROFESSOR. She grades off letter and not percentage. Attendance and discussion posts are mandatory and even if u attend and complete all, u should get 100% correct? No, she will give you a 87% for A standard. Im assuming she does this with essays and tests too. 1 mark off means u get an A-. So expect less than or B+.
Worst prof I have ever had. Attendence n discussions should be 100 but she gives u an 87%. Final was nearly 100 questions. disgusting. she sucked,,, didn't facilitate anyone at all.
I believe that people are giving her a bad rep, yes it is online, and it was a heavy course; however, I disagree with people saying she doesn't help you. I have emailed back and forth with her for more understanding, and she responds quickly and clearly. She's a good prof!
Grades were based off three 500 word essays, one mini-presentation, one research paper (1500), and the final, so you've got lots of chances to fix your grade. She gives really helpful feedback if you ask for it, and is very responsive to emails. Super kind professor, and prepared us well for the final exam. The stories were also super interesting!
I took ENGL 253.01 (Short Fiction) online with Professor Inglis. Inglis was a hard marker, but was very clear with her grading for essays and written assignments. She had an extremely organized teaching style and you can tell by her caring attitude that all she wanted was for her students to be interested in the stories and to succeed.
It felt more like gender and feminism class than english class, if you are not interested in these, do not take her
If this is the only prof available, I suggest you DROP and take it in another semester. Horrible marker and an extremely biased professor. Complex marker because she is biased and very opinionated. If she disagrees with you, shell deduces marks. Entirely illogical and contradictory prompts. Question the ability of whoever hired her as a prof.
Horrible professor, if there is another option I would suggest going with them. Marking is very opinionated, where if your views don't fit her views you lose a bunch of marks. Lecture slides are quite useless as the information on there about core topics is lacking. Solely uses lectures to direct discussion.
Pretty average prof, not too passionate but definitely not a bad teacher. I'm not a great writer and I found my marks pretty similar to my high school marks. Seemed more like a women's studies class at times so if you like women's studies, I'd recommend this class.
The worst and meanest professor Ive ever had in my entire life. If u want to donate to the university, take this course with her^^
Genuine prof who cares for students, gives good feedback, and adequately prepares students for assessments. Easy to work with over email and in office hours. Adds helpful insight into more complex texts. While 4 texts were quite long I found using audiobooks sped the process along and didn't hinder understanding. I would take her classes again!
Shes basically fine, nice enough but cancelled class a bunch of times because she was sick. Books were feminine based and kind of confusing. I am an english major and took AP english so this class kind of sucked to my standards but it was okay overall.
I cannot stress how sweet this woman is and caring and nice but such a bad prof. Her lectures are so pointless. You're expected to read entire books in the span of a week. And she grades SOO difficult- her feedback doesn't match the grade. Overall though she's kind and open to talk but I just wish my mark reflected how hard I tried.
Nice lady and her lectures were ok. Wasn't personally a fan of the required class readings, but they weren't bad. The final exam was reasonable, but the midterm wasn't. Lots to read in relatively short periods of time.
Inglis was a very nice prof but a super difficult and hard marker. Be prepared to read several novels, short stories and poems.
Although she is really nice and cares for her content, the exams and essays were quite difficult. You need to know the tiniest details from every piece of literature read, and the essay marking guide isn't too clear.
She's a very caring person but is not a good professor. Her lectures discuss elements of the books that are not at all important and don't help with any of the assignments/tests. The course work is then based on questions that are impossible to answer and she grades very hard.
She's a nice lady but I always found myself so bored during the lectures because I did not find any of the readings interesting. She grades essays very hard, will take a decent amount of marks off for the smallest thing.
First of all, she's just an amazing person! She somehow managed to spark a love for literature with her lectures in someone who absolutely despised reading and English. Marking is fair for university level writing, and there are tons of opportunities for free marks through exercises and discussion posts. Honestly one of my favourite professors!.
I'm a second year English major taking this course for credit, so I know my experience differs significantly from the average person. I found her assignments to be relatively easy and reasonable, but she assigns more reading compared to other classes of this level. If you're not used to English, however, you'll find it a bit much.
Overall a very kind professor and what you would expect from an English teacher. Does her best to integrate everyone's ideas during class discussions, though occasionally slips up if they are too far-fetched. Relatively lenient grader as this is 'the English class for non-English majors'. Reading selection is interesting and broadens perspectives.
Dr. Inglis is nice; her lectures are in-depth and essential to attend. I took this class in the spring and there were tons of things to read in 7 weeks. She marks the assignments quite strictly but not as severely as some high school teachers. I didn't enjoy the in-class assignments that she wouldn't announce beforehand or the discussion posts.
I took her short fiction class, and I really enjoyed it! She's an incredible lecturer and uses her time efficiently. Always leaves time for questions and is great with feedback and assistance with assignments/tests. She creates many opportunities to engage in discussion and never leaves anything undiscussed.
She is a very nice person, but i feel that her marking is very strict for an introductory English class.
Just pure pain.
Prof. Inglis is a good teacher. She enjoys the material, welcomes alternative opinions (I wrote an essay about how much an adaptation she likes sucked, and still got a good grade lol) and posts the lecture slides so you know what's going on. The essays she assigns can be slightly challenging but in a fun way, though she marks a bit hard.
She was meh. Class was pretty boring and very slow-paced. If you read the books and understand the narrative, just don't go listen to the discussion. There's limited words on essay and you're expected to give a bunch of examples with analysis but she says you need to explain further. It was just a dry course for me.
worst prof i have taken in my entire life avoid at all costs had her read my paper before it was due TA and her broth said it was good and nothing to add and than gave me a 40 percent and she also hates men if you are a man you will get bad grades
so. much. reading. the entire course was based on the novels we read, so if you are prepared to actually read them you'll do fine in the course. lectures provided good insight, but she would sometimes let the class get away from her i.e. opinionated english majors. easiest final i ever took and marked fair on papers as well
While the class is very reading heavy I thought the books covered a wide range of genres and were semi interesting. Kirsten is a good prof who seems to like what she does. She is always happy to answer questions and posts the lectures directly after the class which is helpful. If you read the books and take notes in class it is not a bad class.
extremely specific questions on midterm and final. TA and prof will tell you your assignment looks good and then give you a poor grade. an A is unattainable in this class, she thinks a b- is generous. she doesn't consider that this is an INTRODUCTORY class taken by a majorrity of non-english majors to fulfill graduation reqs.
This Professor made English a nightmare. I went from getting high 90s in high school English to barely getting Bs in this class. The lectures are alright, but she is a very hard marker. I recommend switching out of her class if you are not a strong writer or don't want to work hours to get a low grade.
We read four novels and two short stories; decent texts but we read a novel per week near the end. She is roughly as hard as what one would consider a "tough grader" in English 30-1. Highly recommend attending lectures as the midterm and final had questions from lecture discussions & powerpoints. Final was decent as long as you read all the texts.
Worst Prof don't take this class if you want a grade higher than B-!
L professor, would not recommend dropped my average GPA by 0.5
Dr Inglis is not the worst professor perhaps but she certainly grades quite strictly which does not reflect the true efforts of students. I got an overall D grade although English was my forte as I was a writer for a national newspaper, got international awards and got internationally published too. I do admit that I could have put in more effort
Lectures were incredibly relevant to the readings, and usually inspired ideas for essays down the line. Has a tendency to stand on a soapbox, but unlike other profs doesn't really require you to regurgitate what she said. Just a little shout-out will do. Hampered by her students illiteracy and laziness. Definitely capable of saying something smart.
Dr. Inglis' class was very heavy on its readings however she provided great lectures on the content. She is a decently tough grader, but she (like any other prof) assumes that coming into University that you should have a baseline for your essay writing that you can build on. So if you apply yourself and show up you should be fine.
This was my first online course with firm deadlines. She's a difficult marker, and I'm not sure I learned much in her class. This is also likely because it's online. I felt like most readings had an agenda.
decent class for a nonenglish major. her lectures are somewhat engaging but don't force participation. the pacing of the readings was just a little poor and it was a lot too know. besides that i would definitely take her again
Sometimes we wouldn't get through all the material intended during class, but if we didn't get to a story she took it off the final. The class mostly runs on class discussions, but it's not mandatory to participate. She will sometimes ask you to talk to the people around you about the assigned readings so get to know those around you
AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUEEEEE IF YOU ARE MID AT ELA SHE MAKES IT HARDDDD I CRYYYY HELPPPPP
she literally told us the final was not gonna be memorization, then the whole thing ended up being memorization abt the books we read, wld never take her again
Top 3 worst profs to walk this campus, tests are very content heavy and specific requiring you to memorize the text despite her saying otherwise. Assigned readings are very heavy and require you to spend lots of time outside of class to complete, and are hard to truly comprehend given the time frame.
Took this class (short fiction) for spring last year. Textbook is a must! She had an active reading assignment due at the end where you had to submit a couple of your annotations on the texts. The texts were mostly interesting and easy to get through b/c they're short. Found her to be a relatively fair marker, mostly b/c it's a 200 level course.
I will never take any course with her. I don't recommend her to anyone
She's a decent person, but the way she marks gives you no clear advice towards anything. Even the final, she told us that we should expect to be tested on specific things such as setting, mood, character personalities, but then some of the questions were literally pulled out of a single sentence in a 500 page novel.
AVOID, AVOID, AVOID MY GPA COOKED WHY SHE MAKE INTRO ENGLISH HARD? SM READING FOR NO REASON. SAVE YOUR GPA UNLIKE ME AND BE HAPPY. SHE LIES FOR THE FINAL SAYING IT WONT BE MEMORIZATION, WHEN IT WAS JUST THAT, MEMORIZATION.
Avoid at all costs
AVOID! I made the mistake of taking her class without checking reviews since I figured: "It's a spring class. Can't be too bad, right?"WRONG. She makes A's impossible even if you follow her rubric to the T, because of how vague she is. She expects you to write like Shakespeare in an intro to English class, and chooses the most BORING texts to read.
Her teaching style left me overwhelmed to the point of tears, and I ultimately had to drop the course. She provided little guidance on how to succeed, offered zero feedback, and was more focused on setting impossible standards than helping students learn. Unless you can write like Shakespeare, earning a respectable grade is impossible.
I had a lot of fun this spring semester with her. As long as you are attentive during class, you're fine. I did minimal work outside of what was required before each class, yet simply consistently listening during lectures and taking notes on stuff outside the slides filled the gaps in my knowledge. 85Q MC final was pretty straight forward
I am not an English major, and I did find some of the course pretty dry. However, Dr. Inglis made the lectures engaging and provided guidance for assignments. She was very available for office hours. The required reading was extensive, but not more than I expected. If you are not an English major, and you need this class take it with Dr. Inglis!
Great professor, engaging lectures. I'm not an English major, but she made the class fun, and I looked forward to her lectures. Her grading is by no means unfair or difficult, like others say. If you just follow the guidelines and ask for feedback, you will do well in the course.
If I could rate her less than 1 I would.
Doesn't really teach anything at all. Lectures were just discussions about stories read in the course. Harsh marker, assignment instructions and feedback are vague. Basically a "just do it" class except you don't know how to do anything since she hasn't taught you how to do it. Seems like a nice person though.
Dr Inglis is a nice and caring person but not a good professor. There is no actual learning in this class as we just discuss assigned readings all class with 0 structure. I feel like I haven't learned anything on how to be a better writer or understand topics better. Gives vague assignment guidelines, no structure really to them and vague feedback.
Marks extremely difficult, and will not give feedback unless you specifically request it. Regardless, you learn nothing from class and she does not give guidelines for her assignments. She assigned essays worth a large portion of our marks, and did not give any lecture teaching how to write them, even though majority of the class was struggling.
grading criteria is unclear, short stories with triggering content are included and required readings in course, grades take a long time to go in with no explanation, lectures meant to discuss 3 things will be spent discussing 1. made me change my degree because of how miserable this class was
