Unclear in directions. Tolerates no missed classes. Extremely critical in speech rating.
She is totally NOT practical OR realistic. She makes NO room even for ONE absent class.....She is unbelievably UNFAIR, and SUBJECTIVE in her grading.. The most DIFFICULT professor I've had thus far....So sad
As per the school rule you cannot miss more than three classes. I don't know what you are complaining about... unless you missed four classes. It seems to me you didn't do your work and therefore have a gripe. Get a life.
A great teacher, cares about her students. Gives funny lectures and examples. Made me feel comfortable speaking. But will not stand for any crap. Don't be unprepared or late. 20 point penalty for late speeches.
Great teacher, rewards you for being prepared, will not stand for not doing due diligence for her assigments.
kirsten was great and she does encourage you to do your very best. she is very excited about teaching this subject if you give it your all it is an easy A...
just finished the class. She gave out averages several times throughout. We knew exactly what we had to do and what nights speeches were due. Very clear instructions, very motivating. Fun class.
She is crazy. I dropped after one class. STAY FAR AWAY!

Really strict - rolled her eyes when i would give a speech, didn't give me the time of day, drop her if you can you can find a better teacher
This professor was a great teacher! She was very clear in instructions, fair in grading and fair when it came to redo's in speeches. She was exciting and intereting... She is very helpful and has a positive attitude when you are doing speeches. A great professor.. If you get the chance to take her... then you should!!!
I had a great time in her class. She was very positive. Very serious about her class but made it abosultely fun to be there. No patience for lateness or absence without a call prior to the class. Would definitely take her again if I had the opportunity!
Great Professor! She has the best stories, and keeps the students interested. No tolerance for people who screw up or are unprepared/lazy.
A great teacher!!! The most professional mix of humor, enthusiasm, empathy and concern that I have ever seen in a professor. She makes class fun and interesting; defiantly a must to take if your nervous about taking a speech class.
Simple impromptu speech 1st day. 1 Show&Tell speech. 1 group speech. 3 major speeches, 3rd "doesn't really count." 5 book tests: 5 Qs/ answer 3; 5th test is 2/3 opinion. Even postponed 1 due to speech night. FOLLOW DIRECTIONS CLOSELY, especially quotes/citations. No office; a bit slow to answer Emails. Lectures important. Able to make up speeches.
She is a very funny lady and the class was pretty easy. You definitely have to do the speeches (3 main ones), and she does grade them fairly but pretty strictly. 5 easy 15 point tests, summer session class always ended early. She does play favorites a bit and seemed to really hate certain kids no matter what they did. Good teacher, recommended.
Smart lady. Good teacher. Plays favorites. I was one of the kids she hated no matter what. Really annoyed me. A teacher shouldn't play favorites. My grade was lower simply because she didn't like me.
Do not take class. She will laugh directly to your face after you finish a speech. I really wish i had chosen a different teacher and advise everyone thinking about taking speech with her NOT TO
She is a great teacher. She has passion for teaching. you get the grade you deserve if you do the work. it is that simple.
I really enjoyed her class. Make sure you cite sources for speeches and follow the guideline she gives you the first day of class. It's pretty basic. By the end of the semester you will have no fear of public speaking.
Avoid her if you can. I found her teaching style to be extremely obnoxious. I also thought her lessons were pretty useless. It was unusually difficult to get an A in this class. You will not do well unless your presentations are perfect. She definitely plays favorites.
This woman blatantly plays favorites, cannot grade well or fairly, and is clearly unqualified to teach students the art of public speaking. Her critique is often subjective, unhelpful, and borderline disrespectful. If you want a good professor who will reward you and others equitably for your work and effort, look elsewhere.
I could not put it any better than the rater before me. Do not take this class.
If you follow her easy instructions, you'll do well. If not, well, just check the reviews of the people who didn't like her. Kirsten is passionate, excellent teacher who respects students who try. She cuts you no slack if you come to class unprepared. Her "favorites'' are simply people who do the work correctly and on time. Highly recommended!
Funny at times. Allows funny humor that other professors might not. Not a difficult course. Gave some helpful tips on speaking publically. Made everyone speak in groups at times, some planned ahead (extemporaneous) and some not planned ahead (impromptu) speaches. At the end of the semester everyone got demonstrate a skill and entertain the class.
Really nice professor. Very clear and accurate what she expects from you. She is very concerned with MLA formatted outlines, which should only be a concern for someone who hasn't taken an English class prior... but if you haven't, she actually takes the time to show you how to do it. Very passionate, funny and friendly. Book use was minimal. :)
DISRESPCTFUL ! Does not know how to speak to students. This is a Speech class BUT you are grading on sources and all other nonsense that doesn't have much to do with your speech. On top of that, she's a horrible grader. Take any other Speech Teacher if you want to pass. I just barely passed, and would of received A's if I had a different teacher.
DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO GRADE; YOU CAN DO THE PERSUASIVE SPEECH FOR A DIFFERENT TEACHER AND GET AN EASY 120 OUT OF 120 POINTS, DO THE SAME SPEECH FOR HER YOU GET A 70 OUT OF 120. AVOID TAKING HER AT ALL CAUSE
you have to have a perfect everything to perform a speech for her. highly recommend not taking her class shouldn't be teaching anyone. not very helpful at all.
This professor is very clear in what and when assignments are do. She is a very enthusiastic professor. I enjoyed this public speaking class and the professor did an excellent job. I would take a class with this professor again. Disruptive students who do not do the homework won't do well with this professor.
Great class. Great Professor. Do your work. Complete the proper research and cite correctly who wrote it, where it was published and when. You're golden. If not... take someone else if you won't do the work.
Public speaking terrified me but I am so happy I took Kirsten's class. It was HARD. VERY hard. She was extremely particular about grading, but it's college and I appreciate having to work hard for a grade. I learned so much about public speaking and it honestly no longer scares me-that's the point of the class. Thank you, Kirsten!
She is clear in what is expected... follow all directions. She cares about her students and wants you to do well. But if you are lazy, unprepared, a procrastinator or absent often... don't take her class. It is college after all. Expect to work for it.
I LOVED her class! She has a great sense of humor... the lectures are never boring. Tough grader, you really to follow directions and work hard on your outlines and citations, but she spells out everything you need to do! I would absolutely take her class again! Does she teach anything else here???? READ Miller Handouts!
At first I hated the idea of getting up in front of a class to talk. But with her instructions I researched and prepared and PRACTICED and it got easier. Now I feel I can get up in front of the group and talk. This class will absolutely help me in my other classes. She is nitpicky about research, but at least I learned how to do a works cited page.
Great teacher. Her lectures were funny, she should write a book with all the crazy examples she has of previous students. Be ready to work... You need to research and cite your quotations according to very specific standards. If you want an easy "A" take someone else. If you want a great class and you're willing to work... take Kirsten's class.
Loved her! We had a great semester. We had to do a two-minute speech on class 2. Then Researched Informative, Persuasive and Demonstration speeches which are 300 out of the 500 points for the semester. That is the same with all professors in the dept. She made it fun! We picked our own topics, so it was stuff we are interested in talking about. :)
I loved her stories and examples. She should do stand up comedy. The speeches were more work than I expected, but I got to pick my topics and share my thoughts with the class. Kirsten is enthusiastic and supportive as long as you do your work.
Loved her class. We laughed every night. I learned so much... more than just Public Speaking. She is enthusiastic and really made our group feel comfortable. She is tough... do your work.
Professor Myklebust is good at teaching public speaking. She can be a little expressive and loud at times, but she's funny. The work load can be tough, but if you stay on top of things it isn't too bad. When you are constructing outlines for speeches, MAKE SURE EVERYTHING IS IN ORDER. She won't let you speak if you don't have everything ready.
My favorite class ever! Kirsten started the first night by clearly covering everything that would be expected of us every class. She had very specific guidelines for every speech, but is fair and reasonable if you do the work. Lectures were funny, she is kind of dramatic. I never thought I'd like public speaking as much as I did.
I loved this class. I was nervous about taking speech and having to get up in front of people. She made the class fun and we all got along. I've even become friends with some of the people outside of class because she had a relaxed supportive atmosphere. Highly recommend Kirsten. Do your work and you'll get along fine.
One of the best professors I've ever had. She is very funny and charismatic, and as long as you try your best you should be alright in her class. I learned how to give a good speech and gained a lot of self confidence in a short period of time and would suggest her to anyone!
Kirsten was my favorite professor! I wish she taught more classes here so I could take her again! It's a tough tightrope between encouraging us and making us feel comfortable... and not being too laid back so people get the wrong impression that the class is a blow-off. You have to work for it, but it's totally worth it!
She is very clear about what she wants from students and if you give anything less than that you won't like your grade. Follow the examples she gives you and you'll ace the class. It requires a lot of time and outside work but if you're willing to put in the work you'll learn a lot from her.
I didn't know what to expect. But this is my favorite class I've ever taken at Brookdale. It was a lot of work but the class really worked together and became close. Kirsten was tough but encouraged us all to do our best. I wish she taught more classes here, because she made the class fun and energetic. Hands down my favorite class/professor ever.
Kirsten is an amazing professor! I was not looking forward to this class - public speaking made me nervous. She is a very animated speaker and you are drawn in. Be open and vulnerable. My class bonded in a way I have never experienced. She lets you know on day 1 EVERYTHING you need to know to pass her class! Do it and you will get an A. WONDERFUL!!
I was amazed. Our class was so fun I didn't want it to end. It was a lot of research preparing the speeches, and Kirsten was very specific in what to do for each. Follow her guidelines and you will succeed. But be ready to work for it. She e-mails us and uses Remind to stay in touch with students outside of class.
Best class ever! I learned so much from Kirsten and from my classmates. She gives clear directions for each speech: Informative, Persuasive, Demonstrative and Entertainment. Her lectures were upbeat and funny. She cares about her students. She was easily accessible through e-mail and remind if we had questions. Highly recommended!
Kirsten was great. I loved her class. She is very enthusiastic about teaching, and it shows. She cares about her students. Don't slack off... you will not do well. But if you work for it, you'll get an A.
I just finished her summer class yesterday. This is the third time I took it, and I finally found the right professor and finished! Kirsten was great. It's a lot of research, and she is a stickler for MLA format... but she cares about teaching and it shows. She knows how to make public speaking less scary.
I LOVED Kirsten's class. It was my favorite class this semester. I loved her enthusiasm and her crazy stories about previous speeches. She gave great examples of previous speeches, so we knew what to do. She is tough... You have to follow MLA format for research and quoting information. Follow directions and you will look forward to class each week
Worst teacher I took at Brookdale. Not her favorite? good luck
LOVED Kirsten's class. Clear instructions and grading. The class isn't easy but it is totally worth it taking it with her. She taught stuff I use in my English class now and apply to giving presentations in other classes. Very helpful. If anyone complains, they were probably too lazy to do the work. Kirsten is an awesome teacher. Definitely take!
I just finished her class last night. It was great! We got to choose our topics for every speech, so we had freedom to say what we want as long as we support it with research. She is very enthusiastic, available outside of class. Responds quickly to e-mail and remind messages. I wish she taught more classes here, I'd definitely take her again.
I hated the idea of public speaking... but it is required. So I lucked out with Kirsten. She had lots of handouts and clearly explained what to do step-by step. She showed us how to research and incorporate it into the speech. Had to do Informative, Persuasive, Demonstrative and a few smaller speeches. It even helped me in other classes. Good teach
She is always prepared/ early for class & starts promptly. Covers everything required in the first class lecture. Very specific & no nonsense, which I like. She is firm about rules/requirements for speeches, but that is good. If I follow directions and work hard I'd be mad if she allowed others to hand in stuff late without a penalty. Loved class.
Speech was my favorite class last semester. Kirsten's class was tough but soooo worth it. I'm kind of shy, but she helped boost my confidence. I even made a few friends in class because we all get to know each other. I was taking English at the same time and Kirsten helped me do research for both classes. I wish she also taught English here...
I just finished speech class this week and Kirsten was the best! She made us feel comfortable and helped us to get prepared for each speech. I saw every person who stayed improve their speeches as the semester went on. Everyone got more comfortable getting up & we even made friends. She also taught how to research online databases and MLA format.
Started off super nice and caring for the students in the class.. semester went by missed a assignment due to covid outbreak, I sent it in a month late if that(ok not the right thing to do).. had a field day on grading the rest of my assignments( btw failed that speech LOL lmk) and for the rest of the semester... Just do not take her.
the worst teacher ive ever had. imagine bieng so big on your ego that you deny someone a speech and the oppertunity to present because you decide "theres a direct citation on the outline SO HE CANT GO". 99.9% of teachers out there are good, this one is the .01% that is horrible. DO NOT take this class with her.
I'm just finishing a remote live class with her due to COVID-19. Kirsten made expectations very clear, she gave insightful feedback on our paperwork for every assignment prior to speaking, which really helped me prepare. Not being in person was not ideal due to the virus, but she really helped us all make the best of the situation. Great Prof!
I just finished her online due to Corona virus class. She was awesome and still found a way to connect with each student. She clearly explained each speech with examples and multiple handouts all available online. Three tests based on Open Educational Resources so you don't have to buy a book. Yeah! Save money. I would definitely recommend Kirsten!
Professor Myklebust is great, she always answers your questions, gives you good feedback and let's you know what you need to work on, she made my "Public Speaking" class a great experience. If you do your work and participate she will appreciate your effort. I highly recommend taking her!
Hello there. For Spring 2021, I decided to take this class. At first, it seemed to go well, and for the most part it isn't that difficult. However, the professor really drags out assignments and makes them feel overly-complicated when it should be simple. Personally, I wouldn't recommend this professor and didn't seem to allow accommodations.
The best professor I have ever had ( i am so serious ). She is so funny, down to earth and very understanding. Love her feed back and stories. Great listener and explains everything perfectly. I wish I could retake this class just because of her. Deff. would recommend this class and this teacher 10000 times!
I just finished a summer class with Kirsten. It was a lot of work in a short amount of time. But she explained everything really well with examples for each speech. She was understanding but you had to do your work. I would definitely take her again. Wish she taught other classes here, too.
I was nervous about taking speech. But I lucked out with Professor Kirsten. She helped me with research and creating my works-cited in MLA format. She gave extensive notes for revisions in canvas prior to my presentations, I followed her suggestions my speeches went great. I'd definitely recommend, just get your work in on time don't procrastinate
I was so incredibly nervous to take this class as a very shy person who hates presentations. I will admit, Myklebust made me sort of enjoy presenting. The only issue I did have with her was the demonstrative speech, she only enjoyed those who cooked or baked and anything else was not "enjoyable." Either way, she was nice.
She was a great professor and taught me a lot. She gave me a lot of confidence and made me better as I did each speech. My only thing I wish I could change is that I took this class in person! She was great and if you take her be ready to hear great stories and have a lot of fun! we had a great class and I will miss it very much! she lets you be u!
This was my favorite class. BEST PROFESSOR EVER!!!! I didn't like speaking in public but she makes it so easy there was nothing to be worried about. Our classmates got very close to each other only because she let us and she never got mad when we were having our friendly conversations to get closer to each other.
Professor Myklebust is an exceptional educator who truly stands out. Taking her public speaking class was an enriching experience. What sets Professor Myklebust apart is her dedication to students' success. I highly recommend her. Taking her class was not only educational but also inspiring.
Kirsten was hands down my favorite professor at Brookdale! She made her expectations very clear. She was no nonsense but encouraged our class to talk with each other and support each other which is really hard in zoom. I wish she taught more Communications classes here, I would definitely take her class again if there were other courses with her.
DO NOT TAKE! She does not take late work even 5 min late.Seems very nice but is not at all. Wants the work you do to be perfect and will not let anything slide. She thinks Brookdale is supposed to be Harvard or something. Gotta be on camera in a well lit room all the time. Makes life harder for no reason. Prepare to drop this class after a month.
I loved this class. Kirsten was interesting, used great examples & had funny stories. If you do your work you're great. If you procrastinate, that's your own fault, don't expect leniency. Four tests, the lowest is dropped as per dept. policy. Informative, Persuasive & Demonstrative speeches with clear guidelines and rubrics and a few workshops.
I just finished a Summer I class and loved it! Professor Myklebust gives interesting lectures. Assignments are clearly laid out from the first night. Due dates came quickly but that is the nature of an accelerated summer class, you have to stay on top of it. Kirsten was helpful & we could text or email with questions anytime. Definitely take her.
Professor Myklebust is one of my favorite teachers ever! From night one, she clearly laid out the requirements of the course. If you do your work and try, she'll help you through nerves. If you procrastinate... that's on you. I was going through a personal issue. She took her time, and listened to me, and helped. I wish all cared like her.
I just finished Professor Myklebust's Summer III class online, she was very well prepared & gave clear directions. Each assignment is uploaded in advance & she meticulously reviews our paperwork & gives suggestions for revisions before we present to the class. Uploading rehearsals is a pain, but I understand why we did. I wish I took it in person.
I was really nervous to take this class, I hate standing in front of a class, so I took Speech online remote because I thought it would be easier. I was wrong. You still have to do all the preparation, this professor is very meticulous about MLA format and the requirements for each speech. Now I wish I took it in person. Lectures were good/ funny.
Professor Kirsten clearly covers everything that is expected for each speech. Her canvas page is well organized with all due dates and instructions for each assignment. Her lectures are clear and she tells funny stories/examples for each speech. I definitely recommend taking her class! You have to work for it, but it is worth it!
I see all these horrible reviews about her and I'm so shocked… She is the best professor I've ever had at brookdale and I've been here for a while. She is a tough grader, yes. But she gives you all the tools you need to prepare for - and to perform your speech. If you follow her instructions, you won't fail! She is real and treats you as such too.
idk why printing a speech for an online class was such a big portion of the grade
I don't see why printing an essay is necessary for an online class. People lost points for writing it and for just reading it off their computer. She was also very rude and condensending.
very helpful when reaching out of class and was very clear with every single assignment. she was very understanding and gave lots of time and chances to get things right. most of it was super easy just show up and do good research and you will be fine
I just finished a Summer I class, which was tough because there wasn't a lot of time between classes & the due dates were fast. But Kirsten's instructions, canvas page and lectures were clear and well organized. She gave extensive and thoughtful notes on my paperwork for each speech to help me rehearse & prepare. I would definitely take her again.
Make sure you participate. Eye contact
I just finished a summer class with Kirsten, it was great. Her lectures are interesting because she includes many (often hilarious) examples from previous students. She has been teaching a long time so grading criteria is clearly defined. Paperwork is due in advance and she gives extensive feedback to help us prepare and rehearse. Caring teacher.
Extremely strict and unhelpful. Pray you have enough time for your speech, 3–5 min speeches can turn into 15–20 mins due to her constant questions. Assignments must be done exactly her way. Pray that she likes you or your topic. She acts nice but god forbid you ask a question you're met with curt or passive aggressive responses. Take anyone else.
As long as you do the outlines and PowerPoints on time, you will do well
I just finished a Fall semester with Kirsten, and absolutely loved her class. She is very organized, gives clear instructions & is available through Remind or email for questions regarding my speeches. Her deadlines are non-negotiable, but don't procrastinate and you will do well. She has been teaching many years and gives great examples. Take her!
Kirstens class was amazing. She is strict with timelines and grading, but it is not impossible to complete every assignment on time. Very caring, and her lectures were both interesting and informative. She created a good environment where everyone felt comfortable. Could not recommend her enough.
