...mmm...uh...to questions asked during class
She is very nice and really helpful. Willing to do almost anything for her students :) Makes a boring class A LOT better!
very helpful and everything, but it's hard to stay awake in her class.
She's good - very helpful, but she'd get a lot more done if she'd stop making comments on the people talking in class or leaving. It's getting annoying!
She's so incredibly annoying, talks to the class like we're in kindergarten instead of biology majors. She's stupid and petty. Who cares if people leave early, maybe they wouldn't if she didn't make such a big deal about it!
She does not use proper terminology...words such as "purple blobbies" are not acceptable in a university course. If people want to leave class, that's their right. Don't stop the lecture to point out who is leaving and then complain that people
I like how she tries to help. I find I can understand her lectures easily but then the exams are extremely hard.
okay person, okay teacher for high school but this is university! i want to know the names of the "orange thingy"...and if she stopped stalling to point out talkers and cell phones maybe we wouldn't have to cut out chapters
no, she doesn't always use biological termionology, but it helps her to explain complex ideas in a way simple enough that they're easy to understand. Her exams are challenging (especially the final) but not unfairly hard.
really nice and helpful, but wastes too much time bragging about people leaving her class and about cellphones ringing. CRAZY FINAL, but fair midterms. just to emphasize: CRAZY FINAL!!
very helpful and willing to do anything to help her students understand. the final would've gone much better if she didn't finish too many chapters in the last two weeks and had the exam mostly on those
Professor Poling explains things in a way that is extremely easy to understand, and she takes questions from the class and answers them so anyone can understand. She also has this great policy that we only have to read about what we talk about in class.
Prof. Poling answered questions well and her lectures were interesting! Especially the material on DNA replication. Plants: Yuk! Reviews before each test would be helpful, also be more clear about what's on each test.
Very good teacher. The class is interesting. I also find it annoying when people talk in class and barge in and out, its distracting and i like that she gets after people for it
truely the most dedicated proffesor i have ever been tought by.
HA HA HA....one word FINAL! She may explain things in simple terms but then she expects you to know the "technical" meanings on tests..
Excellent nice prof. Don't bother reading the text book. Print off notes and take notes in class. During exams watch out for double negatives in her questions and bring a thesaurus to the exam for she uses synonyms constantly.
Uses words terms like blobby thing in class all the time but expects you to know the technical term for everything. All MC tests- very tricky. Nice person tho always willing to stay after office hours to help a student.VERY dedicated.
VERY nice person, classes and notes are easy to understand and interesting. I suggest reading at least the study guide though, because sometimes her exams go into detail a little more than what she talks about in class.
Not terrible as far as U of W profs go, but it really bothers me that she blantantly lies when she says "you are only responsible for what we cover in lecture." She also enjoys reusing exam questions that everyone did bad on without explaining how to do them right.
Awful
Okay Prof, attempts to answer questions, does tend to oversimplify, read the text and you're good for any test or quiz.
she is ok ... very nice
Explains things in simple terms in class, but then expects you to know technical terms. exams and tests are extremly difficult...study hard!
Very clear and helpfull in answering questions and explaining topics. However, watch out for the final! She derives a sick pleasure from misleading students as to what's on her exams. Make sure you study ALL of the course material... in detail.
Good teacher
Airhead. Great class for stupid or lazy people.
Very good prof. Clear, fair, and always willing to help those with weakness. No complaints.
Shes nice, but very misleading.. expects a lot of her students. "Dont go into any more detail in the text than I do in lecture".. yea right. Tough exams, study hard!!
Excellent work. Hats off to Professor Poling. She took biology and made it easy to understand. ROCK ON...... Branden Gagne
This teacher is alrite like she teaches nice and she helps whenever she can very kind teacher but very mean in tests and exams... I had to drop this course after mid term...
She's a really good teacher. She teaches well and tries her best to make everyone understand the material. The only thing is she tells you to go in depth as far as she covers the material but the exams are way tougher. Study hard!
Very good prof, explains things well but definately very hard as far as exams go. Don't just study online notes - must read texts. Definately need to go to class in order to do well.
are you kidding me? Maybe if you actually evaluated the grammer in your comments regarding this prof. you would comprehend why you didn't do well. Did you actually graduate from grade 5? alrite = alright?
gives good explaination but tests n exams r killer!!! u ll think that they were easy but when u get mark....u ll b luk NO WAY!!!
Good Prof, Very good teacher!
Good teacher. Easily approachable and friendly. Lectures are interesting. Her exams are quite evil sometimes with tricky multiple choice. Make sure you read the textbook!!
I really liked her; I found many of her lectures fun to attend. I would suggest reading the textbook, but I didn't find her exams unfair at all. I didn't like a couple of the assignments, and I didn't like the testing method in a couple of the lab tests. Otherwise, I think she's great.
Best prof so far!She tells you exactly what sections of the text to study, but don't excpect any free marks. You HAVE to read the text and the study guide is really really helpful. Her exams are not hard if you know what she's talking about. You can do well without going to class, but she's really good at explaining stuff and very helpful!
I had her for both biology classes and her lectures were very clear. Her multiple choice exams were hard at first but after a while I knew what to expect.
She's a good prof but honestly her multiple choice questions are very hard and tricky and i was never able to do well i wouldn't recommend her
She was enthusiastic about class, her explanations were great clear and concise. Her exams/tests were difficult, but if you go to class, read the text you're fine.Study only what she covers. The study guide was a big help -my grade went up once I started using it. Her questions are similar to the study guide. Not a breeze course- work for your mark.
very enthusiastic and best prof ever!!! she knows the stuff inside and out and her classes are fun to attend. the study guide will become ur best friend to study from and also the questions at the end of each chapter in the textbook...her exams are somewhat difficult but as long as you study everything she teaches you'll be fine
Awful, She seems to be very polite and helpful and warm to talk but actually something else is going in her mind how to get the worst out of students. never ready to help students in difficulty.
My favourite teacher. She is very fair and explains everything cleary. Reading the book helps a lot. If you attend class and read the book you should do fine. great teacher.
She is an awesome teacher! Definantly go to her if you have any questions no matter how small she will help you understand! she is very far and takes everyone seriously, I would have to say she was the best prof I had all of first year! Test are fair and if you think anything is wrong dont hesitate to talk to her she is amazing! love her!!
Not good at all. Sucks
she makes wrong exam questions, and she also put wrong answrs. You realy have to be careful if you are taking any course with her!
GREAT professor. She explains everything very well and is clear about what will and won't be on exams. You just need to listen in lecture and take notes. Some of her exams are hard but she will curve. She made the material very interesting and understandable!!!
she is the worst prof ever who don't care about students at all....just making easy money....avoid class from her
Best professor every! She's pretty easy just go to class, take good notes and read the text (not as important) and you'll do fine. REALLY open to questions and really wants you too do well definently take her class but spend lots of time on it cause her MC are tricky if you don't study. I LOVE YOU POLING!
AMAZING! She knows what she's talking about, helpful, fun, sooo nice.. if you go to her lectures and understand what's going on, you're golden.. go to her for help if you need it, she's always around and always willing to help.. she's great!
Amaaazing professor, really clear and straightforward. Halfway through the lectures she stops to tell a joke, its really cute. Very knowledgeable and doesn't just read off slide shows. ALSO posts the slideshows online to download which is really nice!
Amazing professor. Explains everything very clearly and makes the material interesting. Midterms and exams are easy if you pay attention. Tests only what she teaches.
If you go to class, you don't have to read the text (however, I did read the text just for better understanding but never added new info). I did very well on her midterms and exams by just going to class and studying what she said :) <3 Poling
She is the best teacher i have ever had! She is incredibly nice and very helpful! As long as you study the notes she gives, you will do fine on the tests! Funnest class ever! :)
horrible teaching, overall to hard, for christ sake it's second year course lady
Alright professor. She tends to dumb down the lectures but makes the tests really hard.
She tends to use dumbed-down descriptions for things. She will say "ish" and "biggie" and other such terms. She's a really nice lady and it's obvious that she cares, but her lectures are not like the tests, beware. Not impossible to do well, you just need to make sure you understand the concepts despite her simplified explanations.
She is an awesomee teacher! This course was one of my favorites in the past 2 years and the she made the material interesting, easy and specifically chosen from the text. She is a really good prof!
Great Prof! Shes always very interested in what she teaches, and makes things very clear and easier to understand. You should pay attention in lectures because some things could be a bit tricky to understand. I love her "joke breaks"!! Overall a great prof!
One of my favourite professors. The tests are very thorough and everything she teaches is testable. But if you take good notes, you'll do fine. She is very approachable if you need help. She teaches very closely to the textbook, so if any clarification is needed, consulting the textbook is helpful. She makes the class fun and enjoyable.
AMAZING prof!, she explains things very very well and in-depth... She tends to dumb down the subject, however that's not a negative thing because you understand it a lot better, her exams were pretty hard, she tends to ask questions that are not straight forwards knowledge questions, she asks questions that focus on application, deep understanding.
Doesn't really have an idea of what she is teaching. Very nice and kind, but if someone asks her a question she either explains the answer incorrectly or insufficiently. I hate her teaching technique and her multiple choice questions are often irrelevant to the content of the course.
she doesnt care about her students. she doesnt clarify your doubts (further confuses the student)If you care abt your grade dont take her. I had her for physiology and was damned to take another "population ecology"
she is nice and approachable for help but Not very happy with marks..she explains things in very simple manner but when it comes to her tests they are confusing mid term was very long but she made the exam short no text book for her course everything was based on lecture material and no curving for marks
If you can, you should try to avoid her teaching this course with her in class. There is an online version which I've heard good things about. She doesn't even make her own lecture notes, and what's on the notes leads you to think the test will be easy but then she drills you one with her 40 multiple choice and 8 written. 1 wrong=almost 2 percent
Great teacher, very available for help, entertaining and interesting!
Terrible professor. Doesn't know how to make tests. Seems like she tries too hard to make tricky and poorly worded questions instead of just focusing on the material. Acts goofy in class and doesn't explain things as well as she should. Not very approachable and helpful either.
Explains things very simply in class so it's easy to understand. Takes joke breaks and tries to make the class fun. However her tests, specifically the multiple choice are unnecessarily complicated. Uses tricky wording and options. Open to help you, but does not budge on her marking. Very unreasonable/not understanding .
Good prof, however gives very difficult/confusing multiple choice questions. When she mentions a summary table in the textbook, READ IT. It will be very helpful and it is a clue to exam questions.
Dr. Poling, is fantastic. One of the best biology profs for sure. She makes lectures very interesting, and purposely doesn't teach things she knows students will not like. She is super approachable and takes student feedback very seriously and will do what is in her power to make changes for the next test or course.
outstanding professor
Going through some of the feedback seeing some hate towards Dr. Pooling, it actually agitated me and made me want to write this. Her lectures are great, as long, go to every class, write down what she says and understand you will do fine. You must understand the material not memorize, or you will do horribly. Ppl that did bad clearly didnt get it
She is TERRIBLE! worst prof i have ever had. Her exams, specifically multiple choice, are so long and difficult for no reason. She is honestly an airhead, can't answer students questions because she doesn't know the answer herself. She further confuses you if you ask for help. You have no time to even think on her exams. too long, not enough time.
Dr. Poling was seriously the greatest professor I've had in the biology department. Her lectures were fantastic, she goes at just the right speed and provides physiologic examples relative to everyday life. Her tests were challenging, such that you need to understand the material and is great prep for the MCAT. Highly recommended!
I really enjoyed Dr. Polings class. She was always available for extra help which is amazing. Her tests make you think. If you come to class and pay attention you can figure out what will be the short answer questions. The MC questions were more challenging and really made you think hard and apply all knowledge you have learnt. Great Class!
Great teacher. Nicest and easiest prof to talk to, but her tests are difficult and tricky. I've had her for 3 classes now and you HAVE to attend classes and study a lot. If you do this you will get at least a B+, but very difficult to get an A or A+.
Easily the best prof I've ever had at the University of Windsor. Dr. Poling makes science fun and interesting. Whenever I see that she is taking a class I make sure to take it. This year she taught histology for the first time and it was one of my favourite classes of University. She does a good job explaining and really cares about her students
Poling is literally the best biology prof at the university. She is clear in her lectures, informative and an all around nice person. Her tests are perfectly fair and often contain multiple choice which are easy. Make sure to take any class with her.
Very unhelpful. Her midterm multiple choice questions would have more than one possible option and she would not give marks afterward, even if they are clearly deserved. Does not seem to know what she is talking about- explains very little and with no specificity. Her assignments are stupid and she even marks those in a messed up way. Avoid
I say Get Ready to Read but even that will not help you. Her questions come out of no where. She is super unhelpful and confusing. I will never take another class with her and recommend that you do the same. I think it is funny that she is a "Learning Specialist" and does not know how to teach. She obviously has no good qualities to be a prof
she contradicts herself in the lecture. tells us not to read the textbook. went to every lecture plus read the textbook. Very unfair. she does not know what she is talking about. Very unfair in marking. Makes you write peer wise questions, that you spend hours creating, then still gives you a low mark for them. don't like her.
Dr. Poling is an excellent professor & more over a good TEACHER which is so rare to find in profs. She is really nice and willing to accomodate and help students. Don't get me wrong you will need to WORK in her classes and attend lectures and labs to get a good grade. Her tests are fair, if not a little tricky at times. Overall, highly recommended.
Overall a good professor! Engaging, kind, and hilarious! Make sure you go to class and write down EVERYTHING she says (I recommend recording lectures). There is a fair amount of opportunity to boost your grade but beware of her multiple choice (make sure you know the material well enough to answer the questions w/o looking at the confusing options.
Not THAT bad, but not the greatest. Doesn't use the textbook at all, so make sure you attend all the lectures and write down everything she says. Test material is directly from what she teaches & from Peerwise questions. Tests are frustrating -- questions aren't well thought out and have more than one right answer or none at all.
Beware of her multiple choice. Her test questions are more challenging than they need to be. She isn't good at explaining the material well either, and it's almost as if she speaks too fast and says too many words. Not a bad person, just horrible prof.
Very bad at explaining in the lectures. Exam marks are graded tough and most exam questions are confusing. Very heavy on inclass participation, also incorporates online parts which are a waste of time. This is not my first physiology class and I understood the material but still received my worst physiology grade. would not recommend this prof.
She is so unprofessional and just awful! If you see this name drop it immediately! This is my lowest mark and is bringing down my average! She has no clue what she's talking about, and makes up her own multiple choice which often has two answers and is impossible! Would never take any course with this prof again! Don't even know how she has a job!
She is the worst prof I've ever had! The midterms are on very little material which sounds easy but NO! The multiple choice is so hard, she doesn't know the answer to it. Viewing an exam will make you mad, her answers are incorrect and when proven wrong (even with textbook evidence) doesn't do anything about it. She acts nice in class, don't trust!
She takes questions from student assignments & puts them on the midterms. This makes them unnecessarily difficult due to the different writing styles. She does practice questions in class which usually have more than one correct answer, but will not give marks if present on the midterms. Material is easy & interesting but tests makes it unenjoyable
she covers the most useful topics which is good but her grading criteria makes the class a pain in the ass. Also some of the questions on the final were horrible.
Dr. Poling is my favourite! She's like the nicest prof I've ever known. You absolutely can't miss any of her lectures though because the exam is exactly about what is taught in class. But she is super open to students' questions and loves to teach. I wish she could teach my next human phys class.
She is a nice enough person.... unfortunately she does not know what she is talking about. She consistently was unable to answer in-class questions and resorted to saying, "you could argue either way". Even for MC questions from previous exams she would discover mistakes and say there were multiple right answers (too bad you answer on a scantron).
Dr. Poling is amazing. I have taken many courses with her and have even gone to her for help for other courses. She is always willing to meet and help you with anything you need, including personal problems. If you think the grading on your assignments or exams was unfair, she will reason with you and change your grade accordingly. GREAT prof!
Dr. Poling is not knowledgeable. Her lectures are unorganized, was unable to answer questions, constantly contradicted herself, and used student-made questions on exams (which were low quality/incorrect). The material itself was not hard, but she made exams unreasonably difficult because things were taught wrong or her MC questions were ambiguous.
Dr. Poling is very nice, but she is not very knowledgeable (she's not THAT bad though). Exams are not hard but the wording is. My biggest complaint is her using students-written questions in the exams, so you'll have different wording styles (and some are not very consistent). Most of the questions would be answered as "you can argue either ways".
You can study and think you know everything and somehow still do bad. Every question on the tests are a trick question. As well, she talks fast in the lectures and makes simple concepts really confusing. The slides are just pictures and you have to type everything she says. You have tons of dumb assignments that are graded hard for no reason.
Was enthusiastic at first ( since physio 1 was great with a different prof). until I wrote the midterms, the content of the M/C is not difficult but the way they are worded with many of the options being very similar (some questions having 6 options) makes it so difficult with such little time. the M/C was worth about 80% of the grade. terrible.
She's way better this semester than last semester. You can tell she is way more confident and comfortable with the material. She is extremely fair-grader and one of the few profs who take time to look at the written answer questions rather than letting the GAs do it for her. Overall, I enjoyed her class and would take her again if I had the chance.
Her tests were hard to ace despite hard work. Many of her questions were taken from students and thus not worded well/inconsistent in delivery style. Lots of ambiguous questions made it hard to know what she wanted even if you knew the content well. I found that this was an easy 80 but VERY challenging 90+ course (for you perfectionists out there)
I like this class but I feel that the test is harder than what it should be. Questions are weirdly worded, especially the short answer questions, sometimes you don't know what she's even looking for or how specific you should be. Multiple choice is less confusing but there are lots of trick questions. Also you have 3 exams, each is worth 31%.
she doesn't know what she explains. she doesn't understand her own materials. I regret taking the class with her. her tests are very hard and her questions are not even from the lecture nor from her explanation. Try to take the class with another prof pls. I WILL NOT TAKE PHYSIO 2 WITH HER. she is awful at teaching.
DONT take HP w her. This was my fav material and she ruined it for me. Her qs are worded unfairly and when asking for clarification, she doesnt give it. Biggest issue: she doesnt know what shes talking about, she lies/contradicts herself altering reality for students. Got questions wrong that were backed up by sci proof - she said proof was wrong.
Did not like the way our marks were distributed: 93% tests and 7% assignments. If you do badly on the tests, you can't even think of improving your grade by acing the assignments. I liked the content but the way she word her questions is just not fair. Her questions are TRICKY and no matter how much you study, you won't do good. Ain't taking phys2!
Do not take this class unless you like being tortured. Poling has to be the least knowledge professor I have ever met. She completely contradicts herself and doesn't know how to explain anything. If you email her asking for an explanation she will not reply because she simply does not know what she is doing. Needs to be reported for how bad
Human Physiology was among my favorite courses, until I took this class. This was probably my least favorite course in Uni. If you email, don't expect a reply (so send again). My friend wanted to discuss her grade and she gave her a lower mark than her initial mark (even though this was not mentioned in the outline). Avoid her at all costs!
Best prof ever! The learning environment is chill and fun, though you should participate in discussions. The projects are easy enough to handle. I genuinely enjoyed the class and use the skills I learned every day! You will always feel supported by Dr. Poling.
Very great prof! Takes her time in lectures to make sure everyone understands the material, makes the lectures fun and engaging, and always gives lots of practice on more difficult concepts. Exam multiple choice is tricky but the exams are not super long so as long as you know your stuff and read the questions carefully, you should be fine.
Dr. Poling sometimes drags on in her lectures, but usually makes the key takeaways of her slides clear. She's cheerful and enthusiastic, with exams that rarely deviate from topics covered in lecture. Occasional assignments aren't worth a lot of marks, and assist in cementing concepts. Definitely better in Human Phys II than in Human Phys I.
This class is not the easy 90 that you think it is. It shouldn't even be considered a Biology course - we spent more time on marketing to an audience than discussing actual communication in science. Marking schemes are ambiguous and she talks herself in circles trying to justify why she took random marks off of assignments. DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE.
Definitely better in BIOL2050 than BIOL2040, but overall same format and testing style. Highly recommend reading the textbook to do well on her tests, as sometimes she tests on things she's barely covered or mentioned. Her lectures are thorough, and her assignments are somewhat confusing sometimes so make sure to ask questions.
Dr. Poling is great, the material is easy to follow and tests aren't hard if you study properly. Her lectures are engaging and easy to comprehend if you have a background in basic biology-which you should if you're taking this course. She answers questions during class and cares about student comprehension. Fully recommend!
Mediocre prof who shows that she cares but doesn't really. Lectures are quality based and tests are hard application - with tricky questions and answers that contradict her lectures. No matter how much you study, its hard to get perfect. Human Phys 2 was much better so don't let HP 1 set the standard.
You need to go class to understand the material, she had a couple of questions that were short answers on exams, and multiple choice. Does not curve or boost grades. She is fair, her questions are more about understanding the material rather than memorizing. Only mid-terms and finial exam that were online, even though the class was in-person.
She's heartless and will not care if you're struggling with anything personal and hand in something a day late - she will simply pass out 0s like it's candy. She also will give terrible feedback- she'll say something looks good, you submit, she gives you a 60-70%. Her class assignments and in-class activities also suck. Avoid this class if you can.
She is practically clueless about physiology. She constantly gets things wrong in front of the class when she could just read her slides but instead insists on testing herself. The exams had very oddly worded questions, too. This can all be explained by the fact that she is not trained in physiology but is a retired wildlife biologist.
Overall not a horrible prof - go to class since she says a lot of info that is not on the slides. Midterms were pretty fair and so was the final. BUT, you have to put yourself in her shoes and see what answer she would pick, bc if you read the textbook you will know how wrong her teaching actually is. I encourage her to learn more ab phys pls!
Kirsten's class is challenging, but manageable with the right approach. Her tests can be tricky, so staying engaged in class and using resources like Unstuck ai for study prep are key. Overall, a rewarding course if you're willing to put in the work.
This prof's exam questions are not effective to evaluate the knowledge of the students. This prof is fine at explaining things when they have their information correct. This prof does not have an adequate understanding of respiratory physiology and had an incorrect answer on her marking scheme. I personally would avoid, but you may like her.
Good lecturer but doesn't fully understand the content she presents. Exam questions (especially short answer) are difficult and tricky.
