He's had a good sense of humor and generaly a cool guy. His Maya class has a moderate amount of work, teaches you what you need to know. Unless you need to know nurbs. Big into photoshop and shaders.

Of the 15+ professors that I've had thus far, Witte was definitely the most down-to Earth one yet. And seeing as I've changed majors, I'm actually gonna miss the guy. Way cool teacher, kinda gets distracted sometimes, but he's got reams of knowledge of the outside professional world. Great class.
Kirt is a great teacher and I learned a lot about the subject matter, and even more about peripheral subjects that have more real-world impact than the standard tutorials out of books. He presented the material in a fun and engaging way. I wish I had more classes with him!
Kirt is a great guy, and really knows his****. By no means is he an easy A.... you'll be doin' alot of work... which means you'll do alot of learning!! Highly recommended
He would have to be one of my favorite professors. You really, really have to be willing to work in his class, but I would take him again in a second. You will produce good work if you make the effort.
If taking cmpa 110, he focuses on 3d so choose wisely. Bark is worse than his bite but sometimes he contradicted himself and it confused me. You work hard and he lets his opinion be known trying to prepare you for his "Real World" ideal. Personally I'd rather not have him ever again. Others can deal.
He really knows what hes teaching, although he expects you to know a bit about each program already. Very professional like assignments, he treats you alot like a potential employee. You definatly get out of it what you put in it with Witte.
This class is a gateway to the intro class of your potential major, and it's easy to think "I've used Photoshop before" and assume you'll be okay. Not with Witte! He brings a relevant real-life focus to the class, which is ultimately helpful, but at times can be sobering to your dreams of grandeur.
worst teacher at SCAD. doesn't teach just talks about the video game industry and how he worked on one tiny thing in Spyhunter. He knows his stuff but has no idea how to convey it to the students and is completely full of himself.
AVOID! Loves the sound of own voice, has no idea how to convey his knowledge of programs such as Maya. Won't let you work while he's lecturing (which takes the whole class time). Low interest in helping you if you're not a 3d animation/visual arts major. Mean temper, usually no breaks, all around bad experience of a class.
Horrible teacher. I have never felt to down graded before. No interest if this is not your field. Often gets angry at class. Lectures are long and boring. It is hard to follow him on programs. No breaks. Brown nosers got the attention, no matter how good you think your piece is he'll find something wrong with it. Avoid!!
Prof Witte seemed to have a vendetta against our class. At the beginning of the quarter when he says that he only likes visual effects majors he isn't lying. He's extremely pessimistic and views the internet as if he were fearful mother during the mid-nineties. Avoid avoid avoid, there are much better professors for CMPA110.
Went into this class pretty fearfull of prof Witte. Truth is this man is a wonderful teacher, if you have a hard time following along when someone is explaining something then he is not for you. If your a visual learner then he is GREAT, work hard don't miss class and you'll make an A. He does love to Lecture but trust me in the end its worth it!
Took this class online. This is the best professor I have had in an online class. Checks the discussion boards regularly, Responds to emails immediately, gives helpful criticism. Communicates expectations clearly, though sometimes his "how to" explanations are confusing- best stick to the textbook or course materials for that.
SO down to earth its almost zombifying. Not enthusiastic about the industry. Not passionate. He really drains all artistic aspiration out of you.Its too much. Did not excite me at all, felt like I could have learned a lot more. Personally I wish I had chosen someone else. He didn't even teach after effects, barley touched on dreamweaver.
BAD! Answers emails and everything- but there's nothing helpful in them. I failed this class because I needed extra help and took it online. I don't know Maya! that's why I'm taking a class to learn it! Can my teacher help me? no. just 'no'. waste of time and money. If you're not majoring in his field, you're screwed.
this class says 'advanced' and it really means it. if you don't know how to use these programs prior, you'll really struggle. i had to get a tutor to help me with maya because the professor was not helpful at all. his lectures are very in depth and he moves very quickly. i'm still achieving an A in the class, but beware.
Online class. His work is easy but he nitpicks extremely hard. I got a low grade on one of my projects because an image I used did not meet his standards(i.e. he didnt like it), despite me doing everything he asked for. His emails are extremely unhelpful, and his comments on the grade sheet are rude.
Most of the time I figured out major portions of our projects by myself. I had to search for tutorials or just dig into the program and find solutions on my own. Prof was more involved at the start. Lately most of my questions or postings in the discussion forums have been ignored or un responded. I did learn things but would not take him again!
Was helpful at the beginning of class. Seemed committed to the class and talked about Maya until we got the assignment. Once Maya was completed he became uninvolved and stopped giving feedback on graded assignments. Any feedback that was given was rude. Showed no desire to teach the course towards the end. Only VSFX should sign up for him.
Spent the first 3 weeks of the quarter complaining about Maya and all of its problems. Ignores emails asking for help. 2.5 hours of lectures, no working in class with him whatsoever. Be prepared to do everything yourself. He expects you know some animation as well. Waste of $3000.
Worst teacher I've ever had at SCAD... Unless you're a visfx major, or a kiss-up, don't take him... He doesn't teach... first few classes all he does is complain about Maya's default preferences. DO NOT TAKE HIM EVER! TAKE ANOTHER CLASS IF HE'S YOUR ONLY OPTION!
Online class. His tutorials were minimal and unclear--for almost all of the assignments I had to look outside of the class for help--I learned far, far more from friends than I did from any of his (particularly unclear) instructions, comments (on the chance occasion that he commented before the turn-in date), or emails.
Class lectures had no relevance to class assignments. Had to teach myself everything to complete assignments. Basically will complain about Maya the whole time, and what he does teach is counter to industry standards. Easily the worst experience with a professor I've had since high school. Avoid at all costs.
He knows a lot about what he teaches, but he's pretty obnoxious about it. If you want to major in that area, he'll get you a good introduction, but fine artists may want to look elsewhere.
I'm a double major in animation & vsfx I took ANIM 250 (digital form space & lighting) & even though I didn't have to take VSFX 210 (3D Digital Effects), I decided to anyway cuz I wanted more modelling practice...bad idea. To any VSFX majors or minors, do NOT take this class, take ANIM 250 instead. This professor isn't good at teaching period.
I was scared going into this class after reading the reviews on this site. I have to say that professor witte is hard, knows what he wants for projects, is very truthful about project flaws, but he is also very enthusiastic and encouraging. I worked very hard in this class and got a high A as my final grade. I think overall he is a fair professor!
This class is hard, though not impossible. Please only take this class if you are a VFX major. That being said, always try to think outside of the box. This will get you noticed by him which in turn will get you a better grade. Be unique and show a positive work ethic. This is the type of teacher that has connections with your future employers.
I did well in this class, but not thanks to Witte. He is annoyed when you ask questions, a terrible lecturer, seems to take pleasure in being mean, and frankly doesn't know much about what he teaches. His experience and knowledge of the industry were great 20 years ago, but are no longer valid. I have had to relearn things I "learned" from him.
I wish I got to know him better. An incredible professor. You have to work hard and pay attention, but it's all interesting and relevant. He's extremely intelligent and gave me the best class I could have imagined. His lectures are interesting, cool and he's a great guy with an awesome sense of humor. I highly recommend him, even though he's tough.
He is one of the best professors at scad. His last is tough but trust me this is the professor you want to learn from. He will push you beyond your limits. If you works hard and focus in his class you can get an easy A.
The biggest thing I got out of this class is what it's like to have an idiot client. I honestly think because of that it was a good experience. Kirt will ramble for the entire class about Maya and not mention the most important tools you should use. The class is very self driven. His lectures don't provide enough for what he asks from you.
BARELY gives valuable feedback. Many occasions where he'd just give a couple words as feedback or none at all. His assignments are mediocre, you'll see for yourself how little they teach you for "advanced" class, his classes barely teaches you anything. Depressed me, made me regret taking his class, I wish I did it with someone else in class.
If you can help it, take with someone else.
Not helpful at all. Tend to input snarky remarks during critiques as well as overly short comments, if not, shallow suggestions. Doesn't care about his students works. Lack of a lot of professionalism. Classwork encouraged students to pick on each other's critique as well as including unclear and uneffective teaching materials. Unclear grading.
I took Kirt a couple quarters ago and think he is an outstanding online professor. Every project we worked on had incredible explanations of exactly what he wanted, he had everyone critique AND left great feedback. He will not give you an A for getting it done. He expects quality and if you follow through, you will learn SO much. Would take again!
After reading the ratings here, I felt really uneasy about taking his online advanced class. But wow was I wrong. He's an amazing professor. He does seek quality, but he gives video tutorials on basically everything. You can e-mail him whenever and he will answer every question quickly . You will learn a lot if you give some effort. Would recommend
He is very complicated and if something happens he will not except excuses. I submitted a project that I worked very hard on and it showed up blank and he gave me a zero I emailed him and explained that I did everything I could and he emailed me back and said you are not doing very well today It will be counted late... I would not suggest him.
He is very rude on his comments and no help. would not recommend
This class was pretty confusing overall. If you are good with working digitally the class shouldn't be too hard but if you need more help, do not take this. Witte was often very unclear about requirements (he is especially unclear about file size). If you can, take this class on campus with a different professor.
Pretty straightforward and his comments are typically short. He nitpicks but if you fix it then you're fine. He didn't post videos in later assignments and I had to study from youtube. Not recommend if you're not familiar with programs. There are Maya, Ps, AI, Dreamweaver. Can be unclear about specs, in that case email him. He responds quickly.
Horrible professor. Will not work with you to help you learn or get better, very snarky and rude whenever he can be, awful teaching skills! I have never dropped a class before, but I just simply couldn't take him anymore. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASSES.
If you take his advanced CMPA class, he expects you to already have at least a little bit of experience with the programs used (maya, photoshop, illustrator, dreamweaver, after effects). Doesn't mince words & is very straightforward with criticism. However, he does provide video tutorials and course supplements. Wasn't the worst class ever.
As other people have said, he can be rude when giving feedback. He can also be pretty unhelpful, but he will tell you in your in-progress what needs to be fixed before you turn it in. (Just won't say HOW to fix it.) I had no previous experience with these applications and still made a good grade in his class. Overall, I feel I learned a lot.
Terrible teacher; didn't care about the students at all. I had technical issues with one project but kept him informed while I worked with the school's tech support team. Still gave me a zero; took my grade from A to C on last project. I also felt bad for some students because he would write rude and degrading comments to them for everyone to see.
THE. WORST Professor I've ever had in my 3 years at SCAD. Very rude to students while giving feedback, to the point of it not even being helpful, sometimes it's just plain degrading. I had A throughout the whole quarter and still hated his class. He also gives lectures for 2h 30min straight WITH ZERO BREAKS. Avoid at all costs
Professor Witte takes off a random number of points for each flaw in your project. For example if you submit a PDF and he does not like the edges of the canvas showing he may say "-10" he may say minus "-5". Very picky, yet does not explain what he wants. I have never failed a class before and maintained a 3.4 until this class despite my efforts.
I'm surprised at the negative feedback. I had this instructor for an online computer application class and I found him to be reasonable, straightforward and engaged. He responds to emails really quickly, too.
Prof Witte is great,he clearly explains the requirements for his projects, make sure to read all of his announcements and you will be fine. He is very engaging in the class, gives a good straightforward feedback, never saw a rude comment from him to anyone unless pointing out exactly what should be improved is considered to be rude. You learn a lot.
He is very unprofessional. He has said many rude things, and although he gives lots of promot feedback it is rude and condescending. I love SCAD but this is the only class EVER i have not enjoyed whatsoever.
K. Witte is very knowledgable, but his comments often come off as rude and snobby. He is very quick to tell you what you did wrong and how you supposedly missed the point, but doesn't always give positive feedback. Also, he writes a whole book of instructions for each assignment.
He gives some harsh comments which I stopped reading by the end of the quarter because I did not want to feel put down. You will get a lot out of the class if you are not very familiar with Maya and the Adobe cloud, if you are familiar with these the class will be easy if you put the work in. The first few weeks are the hardest.
Despite everything people say about him, he is a very serious and tough grader, but he is doing it in the most professional way possible, and i personally like that part of having him. He really knows his stuff in the industry so i trust his judgement and his process of grading. Expect a lecture every class for the entire time too. Manage your time
Like others have said, he is a little harsh and really tough when it comes to grading. I managed to get an A+ for this class, but I had to work on my projects every day and for the maya unit about 5 to 6 hours a day. Make sure to read everything he posts even though it's long and follow instructions to a T. Formatting can take points off!
Kirt Witte is an awful professor here at SCAD, he doesn't make his expectations clear for the projects that he assigns and then continues to mark projects down according to his unspecified expectations. Overall I would advise finding a different professor other than Kurt Witte, because he has negatively affected my experience at SCAD.
I like Kirt. He acts like an actual professor who pushes people beyond expectations. I admire how he weeds out those who aren't passionate. I admired the roster slowly getting smaller as the projects got harder. Is vague with his feedback, but what do you expect. He isn't gonna hold your hand. Not enough room for cry babies in this industry. :)
One of the best professors. I am surprised to see his low rating. If you notice majority of them say he is a tough grader etc etc. Well let me explain if you do the work take his feedback you will excel in his class. He pushes you to be the best. He prepares you to be ready for the industry and not be a snowflake.
This is what online education is supposed to be. Prof Witte was always there. He responded to all drafts in 24 hours or less. Very specific instructions for revision. Good insights on the work and on being a professional. Fast grader and fair. Great sense of humor. Highly recommend.
Professor Kirt is one of the best Ive had! He pushes us to do our very best and Ive gained a lot of knowledge from this course! Hes very professional and clear with instructions! The assignments kept me engaged and it was really fun to learn about all of the software apps! I will definitely be recommending him to other students.
Professor Witte is a hard but fair professor. I had him on an online class and it seemed no matter what time of day you asked him for help, you got it! The class is hard but he gives a lot of great, timely feedback but makes sure you participate for if you don't that's what kills you. The more questions you ask the easier it is!
very unclear on grading criteria and critiques your work based on his person preferences... Completely ruined my enthusiasm on every project. DO NOT TAKE
I had this professor for a summer precollege course this year and I would not recommend. He expected high school children to perfectly animate Star Wars clips without teaching them basics such as lip-syncing or the 12 Principles of Animation (he only spent 2 days on animating). Also, his grading was based on his nitpicks and personal preferences.
it was online cuz of covid. he recorded all of his lectures and played them during class which would be fine if he didn't require we go the class to watch a video. was very vague when he gave critics. also he showed my class his hall of fame works and said y isnt ur stuff as good as this idk y to make us feel bad ig even tho they just learned maya.
If you wanna recreate the first 7 minutes of Star Wars: the empire strikes back and not learn ANYTHING about animation at all, then kirt is your guy. He admitted on the first day he doesnt know how to animate and doesnt critique your technique, but rather how accurate your animation is to the character designs of the film. Ugh. Just dont.
This online class was a nightmare. I felt like I had to teach myself. Wittes video lectures are unhelpful because he fails to explain basic concepts & rambles on endlessly. His feedback tells you what to fix, but not HOW to fix it. I learned a lot but the process was extremely frustrating & I had to work overtime. I would not recommend to anyone.
DO NOT take his Anim 190 introduction class. He gives helpful and timely feedback with grades and emails, but he would better to teach a more advanced class. He never really went into the very basics of how to put together an animation. His Maya (3d software) lectures were very complicated and long-winded. It felt like I had to learn on my own.
Do not take this class with him. He basically just shows you prerecorded lectures the entire time so you cant even ask questions. Going into my next quarter I now feel like I am behind all of my classmates because he failed to properly teach his class. Don't waste your time or money.
The faults of this class aren't really Prof Witte's fault. I genuinely have no idea why this professor is teaching an Animation course. He says on the first day that he isn't an animator and "can't even draw a stick figure". The only way you're going to get any use out of this class is if you've already decided on going into the 3D concentration.
The man should NOT be allowed anywhere near an animation course. He doesn't know anything about it and has zero practical experience. Our class had to band together on the weekends to figure out how to animate ourselves. He's a photographer/editor and desperately tries to shoehorn those skills into his class. Avoid at all costs.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS! Not only did he waste the classes time on Photoshop but he has misgendered multiple classmates and made comments about characters of color needing to be more ethnic or that their skin is to dark!!!!
he's fine. not awful. if you don't care about vehicles, you won't have fun witte is clearly very skilled but not great at teaching. lectures will put you to sleep and he often gives feedback on the parts of your project that you explicitly say you aren't done with, instead of the ones that you actually ask for feedback on, which is just irritating.
His blackboard was extremely organized, had detailed assignment instructions and course schedule, FAQs for each assignment, and additional resources. The video tutorials were easy to follow. I spent a lot of time on projects, but the results were worth it. As long as you put in a significant amount of effort you will do good in this class.
He is the only professor who teaches VSFX101 at the moment, only shows YouTube videos. Some of his classes are fine. He actually great with replying emails so be sure to ask if you think something is not clarified. I just don't like how the class is going without any interactions between class. Avoid him if you can.
Will call people out in front of class for not understanding things and gets frustrated at questions. Also, he forgot to include instructions in the submission instructions and told the class that WE are making it difficult for him because of that? Just plays videos in over half the classes, too.
The professor is a very good visual effects artist; however, he was not qualified to teach a beginning animation course. We did not learn about the fundamentals of animation at all, which many students did not know, and instead spent too much time on character modeling. Graded based on his preferences and was disorganized. Would not take him again.
I have no clue how Prof Witte has such a bad rating. I'm pretty happy that I'll have him again next quarter! He is very organized on Blackboard and all of our projects are clear. Responds to emails promptly and gives us some extra credit chances. Very fun elos!!! If you're an 2d anim student you may not like him, since he focuses on 3d and photos
DO NOT TAKE PROF WITTE IF YOU ARE A BEGINNER IN VISUAL EFFECTS, especially Maya. I think he does a pretty good job with basics for people who have experience, but for "newbies" it can be very difficult to jump right in. You absolutely have to pay attention in his class, he's one of those who stops talking and waits until everyone is looking at him!
Professor Witte is very knowledgeable in the field but is horrible at teaching and is vague and disorganized in his feedback. I feel like I had to teach myself. He gets side tracked during lecture and rambles on about his experiences in the industry. He can be very rude to students in front of the class during feedback which is very off putting.
I feel that he explains and talks about things that don't go into the class. As a Maya newbie, I've struggled all through the class since he doesn't explain quite easily. He shows dominance of the program and experience, but need better ways of teaching. Mostly learned on my own.
Witte has an attitude. During the last critique, he was rude to everyone's work. He also gets mad if you don't do something that you didn't know you were allowed to do, even though it wasn't in the assignment description because you "should've asked him". He explains very little. If you are a beginner, be prepared to learn softwares on your own.
Garrett isn't made for everyone. He is tough on his students but I found that he wants us to know what kind of industry we are getting into. Difficult intro class. my final project was garbage but he knew how much i worked on learning the systems to do it and gave me an A that I feel i dont deserve. I believe he grades off of your effort.
This guy is so angry all the time. He goes out of his way to make the learning experience feel like torture. Thats saying something considering he teaches my favorite subject and I'm doing well in the class. Would have given him a 0 if I could have. His character in class is unacceptable and should be put under review.
He very prideful and thinks that his way is the only way. Anytime I have ever asked him a question his response is "why would you do it that way?" and "i'm not gonna show you how to do that", which is exactly how you DONT teach someone. Hes not helpful and talks down to students.
I am writing this as a senior now, and I will say this is the worst class I have ever taken. Professor Witte insisted we arrive to the zoom call on time, but then pressed play on hour long lectures he had recorded from previous quarters and presumably left, unavailable for any questions we might have about the material until the end of the class.
Average professor. Not great, not bad. I think you learn what you need to. He is kinda harsh but I think it really helped me do better because while I was working, his voice would be in my head telling me I could do better. He is very straightforward with assignment criteria and he has lots of lectures recorded in blackboard for extra help.
This is a lecture class, so expect a lot of sitting and listening. Projects are done out of class, which can be a bit time consuming, but you just have to manage your time well (he gives you weeks notice). He is always easy to reach, and provides many opportunities for critiques. Just communicate/ demonstrate that you care about learning/ improving
His class is very project heavy- which would be fine if any of his project briefs were legible. He'll make alterations to the brief without deleting outdated info, meaning you'll have pages and pages of wrong and right information just jumbled together, and you have to pray that you're looking at the right section, or it's over for you.
This is a beginner modeling class, and yet this professor teaching one of the most unprofessional and irresponsible things you can do when modeling. I was practically tearing my hair out listening to what this guy thinks is good modeling practice. A complete beginner would have to relearn almost everything.
difficult project than higher level
He's a really good guy and a fair professor. If you put in the work you'll get an A and he'll like you enough, but it is a lot of work. If you don't put effort in he probably will call you out on it. The projects are pretty intense if you are not very well versed in 3D modeling and VFX, but if you pay attention and try you'll be fine
Harsher grader for feminine ppl & would be easier on more masculine. Almost everything I learned in his class was not accurate to the current 3d modeling workflow. If you have accommodations document everything as he violated mine a few times. I physically can't put myself through another class of his without willing to jeopardize my health again.
He was def softer with guys. He is easy to reach outside of class but VERY RUDE. I didn't like asking questions in class because of how scary he was. He will humiliate you in front of the class if he doesn't like anything. I've never experienced fear from a Prof at SCAD but him. Please take this advice. Take Tim Steele if u can
I'm currently taking his VFX101 class and it's one of the biggest waste of time and money I've ever experienced. All that he does is show YouTube videos and movie clips every single class (At least so far). He doesn't teach, he has the videos teach and they barely even tell you anything. AVOID!
Professor Witte runs a challenging class, but if you stay on top of things, it can be quite rewarding. The projects are time-consuming, but he provides feedback and opportunities to improve. Unstuck AI was a huge help for preparing for exams.
Assigns big projects to be done outside of class, and requires a 10 second animation for your final if you have taken any prior class involving any kind of 3D program - even if you haven't actually animated before. Awfully heavy workload for a lecture class. Very inconsistent / overwhelming instructions for assignments. Not to mention his attitude.
I feel like I learned nothing of value about visual effects in my time in his class. His “lectures” consisted of him skipping through YouTube videos. And more than half of the time those videos had nothing to do with visual effects. Not to mention he gives absolutely no class time for any projects, overall felt like an absolute waste of my time.
This guy is not respected enough. Took him for VRPD170 a while ago and I enjoyed this class to the fullest. He is a bit southern-sassy, but he is straightforward, gives honest and detailed feedback, wants you to learn and succeed. I am fem-presenting and had 0 problems with him. If you do something he doesn't know how to yet he gives extra points!
Professor Witte is honestly a very blunt and honest person, giving tough grades and feedback on projects, but it is extremely helpful for making sure you do your best work. He cares a lot about his students and wants them to succeed for your career later on, which is why he's strict, also being extremely knowledgeable and passionate in his field.
YT clips r fine(LOTs of breakdown vids, some explaining concepts n sometimes pauses vids to elaborate. Not the problem w/ him. He's rude: cutting kids off when he's 'sure' he's right, call outs, suppressing env. For crit, he HAD to open each project in PS n mask every problem he saw to fix himself, taking 10min/project n had to speed thru last 6.
