he's a very literal, sensory, practical kind of teacher. you have to be an active litsener to really pick up things. he tries his best to make it interesting. you can see he tries hard. he's the definition of the word 'acedemic'. always looks clean.
For a class I thought I would hate, its become one of my favourites b/c of the professor. Teaches well, he's calm and organzied and provides good notes to take on power point. I love going to this class. Always feel like I got something out of it.
fantastic; wonderful prof. clear, organized, obviously very dedicated to his job and passionate about his areas of expertise. incredibly friendly, helpful, and encouraging.
i like his way of teaching, power point slides and everything are well organized! the test was so hard tho!!!

Wonderful prof! So clear, so helpful and approachable. Tests are challenging, but he offers so much assistance. Gives great feedback. So organized! He's a fantastic professor.
goooooooood job keep et up. yuh de man
Great guy, always willing to help you work out an assignment. Personable and very organized. Great class structure with the power point emphasising what is important in the readings. Keep up the great work!
Fantastic prof.
He is as great a professor as can be!
On behalf of all my peers, I must say that we are all going to miss Professor Kraay. He is the best professor ever!
Prof Kraay is great! He is the best prof that I've had so far. He is SO helpfull and willing to answer questions. Not to mention the fact that he just seems like a really nice person.
Very nice to talk to and a very good listener. Always interested in what students have to say. Could be more clear when explaining some points, as course was rather detailed in content.
If only all my teachers were this smart and nice and fair and cute!
Prof. Kraay is the best! This is the 2nd class I've had w/him and guess what kids...he's teaching ACS 300 next year! YAY! He's so organized, friendly, and gives lots of positive feedback and encouragement. He's an all around nice guy.Yay for Kraay!
Kraay is hot

Take philosophy of religion!
Did we mention he is hot?
Loved him in 105!!! If it's true that he's teaching ACS 300, I'll be there every single class. His lectures are great! Amazing prof. Take his classes people!
Excellent professor, a true credit to Ryerson. He has a passion for what he does and you will never feel cheated out of a mark in his class. Very fair, accurate and concise. Give this man a bigger office, he deserves it!
I love you Professor Kraay! Absolutely the best professor at Ryerson. Extremely smart, very clear, very organized, very helpfull, very conciderate, and really really hot. Marry me!
I have to agree with everyone. This is a GREAT professor. Intelligent, warm, friendly, caring, respectful, adorable, clear, fair, available (not in the way we'd all like - I don't think) And you can count on his lectures to help things make sense.
Prof Kraay is truly an amazing teacher! He's always available for help and his lectures are soo clear/easy to grasp. He also provides encouragement and feedback to you if you work hard and show some effort. Glad to have him at Ryerson.
I love this prof! So happy I have him again this yr. I've never seen a prof earn the respect of his students like he does. Even if you don't like the course content, you'll start to just b/c of the way that he presents it to you. Keep it up Kraay!
I took a class with him at U. of T. He made me love philosophy so much, it became my major. You guys at Ryerson are lucky!!!! Grrrrrr.
He's done it again! While the course content itself wasn't that interesting, his enthusiasm for the material made you interested. I only wish we could have him again next semester...
Great prof, great lecturer, great person. But not the easiest of markers. I love this prof but I'm steering clear from now on and hopefully no more required courses with him :(
really nice guy. if you cant understand, he'll find a way that you can. he has a habit of keeping his eyes closed tho, it's a little odd, sometimes i can't stop staring! great prof! i love how deliberately he speaks.
Very clear and concise. He does not waste time discussing things that are not pertinent to the material and is good at keeping the class on track. A lot of pre-essay paperwork to read, don't be alarmed by this. I was at first, but it all really helped me to complete the assignments effectively.
very good teacher. very approachable. very clear.
I have a crush on him. It all started with critical thinking... Jokes aside, he is a great lecturer and a professor who seems to actually care for his students. I have enjoyed both classes and would recommend him to anyone. He is always willing to take questions and explain unclear points. Hurrah Kraay!
He is unquestionably one the best profs at Ryerson. He sets a standard for helpfulness, clarity and effectiveness. I loved him both as a professor and a person. He is always going to remain an inspiration and a standard of excellence for me for the rest of my life. Love you Professor Kraay!
I love this guy so much. He is so nice and helpful. My favorite prof at ryerson. Great ppt! so organized and prepared for class. Great speaker.
We love professor Kraay !!!!!!!! Very good professor :) Way to go ! Note for students: Make sure you go to his lectures, even though it is 8 in the morning, they are very interesting.
Even though I found the subject matter of this course a bit boring, the prof made the best of it. He was knowlegable, witty and explained things well. If ACS 105 is a mandatory course for you, make sure you select Kraay as your prof,to get the most out of this class
He's a great person and a great prof. your lucky if you have him in your University career!
This is hands down the best professor at Ryerson University. He is exceptional at his job and is avid in communicating the material without bias. Learning from professor Kraay extends into a realm of professional and objective perception in all facets of education and probably life as a whole. Bestow on yourself the honour of being educated by him.
Professor Kraay is honestly the best teacher I have had at Ryerson thus far. He made a quite boring and dry course interesting and I actually learned something every time I went to class, he makes the material so easy to understand. So much so I actually went to every single class and mine was at 8am! Best professor ever, seriously.
Best. Prof. Honestly, he is so nice, so easy to follow, and just overall amazing. Take his class if you can! His midterms/exam is very fair - hard if you don't study! Plus he's SUPER cute! Hands down best professor I've had so far at Ryerson.
Love him!! He's so helpful if you want to improve your grade, and his lectures are interesting and very straightfoward. And he's such a cutie!
Prof. Kraay is the best! He delivers such a great lecture without bias and with complete encouragement. I learned so much in the class and I looked forward to it. He makes his class such a great learning environment... it is quite wonderful. Also, he is always smiling and entirely adorable.
Prof Kraay is an extrememly nice guy, and he is very caring about students! Although I found that the essays were marked very hard, he goes out of his way to help you succeed, and you can really see that he loves what he does. The course was challenging in some ways, but he explained concepts really well. Great prof!
He was an ok prof.. but I didnt like his teaching ..he taught the 1 year students like they were in grad school and didnt connect with the students. i didnt do really well in this class bc it was so much to keep up with.. he was not very approachable :S
THIS PROF WAS HORRIBLE .. I DID NOT LIKE HIS TEACHING.. IT WAS SO HIGH STANDARD AND HE WAS NOT approachable.. THIS CLASS VERY FAST PACED :S
I had Professor Kraay at U of T before he earned his Ph.D. and it was so clear that he was a rising star. The best professor: clear, concise, caring, and BRILLIANT. It was a true privilege to have been his student. He will continue to do great things, and Ryerson is so lucky to have him.
Want a very challenging but enjoyable course? Take Kraay's Philosophy courses. He teaches the course well but he's a very hard marker. Don't expect to get very high marks in your essays unless you're one of the lucky few. Don't count on taking his courses as an elective if you want to boost your overall marks. Caveat emptor.
He's a great person and good hearted! He teaches really well!
This is the best prof Ive had. He is caring, interesting, and very clear. I am so sad that my class with him is coming to an end. If you have a chance to have this prof, TAKE IT!!! AMAZING!
Kraay is awesome! He's extremely interested in the philosophy of religion and it shows. He's very approachable and kind. If you go to all of the lectures and study exactly what he gives you on the exam review you will ace the class no question. I didn't even read one of the readings and still got an A. Take this class!
Great prof, also a great speaker. Very helpful and encouraging. But i must say SSH105 is the most useless course i have ever taken. the course in itself is a waste of a good prof.
Good, down to earth guy. Teaches using examples and tries to make course material relevant. Tests are easy if you study, memorization is the key to success. Slides could be clearer but overall was really satisfied with prof.
Very Good Professor easy to understand I wish he was my prof or all my classes
He's a great prof! best one i've had. Do not need textbook because lectures are so detailed. The tests are not surprising, if you study and understand it you will do very well!
WOW! I love love love Professor Kraay, Critical Thinking is definitely not the funnest course but if I had any other prof I would have hated it. Kraay is so nice, is extremely approachable and just honestly the BEST prof. If you can get him, do yourself a favour and get into that class, you won't regret it! :)
Wow, easily one of the best profs at explaining things. Just attend his lectures and you do not even need the textbook.
Uses great examples to support his thesis and course material. Tests can be challenging but if you attend tutorials and read the text, you should be good.
Most helpful and most interesting prof I've had so far. Made 8am classes not only bearable but also enjoyable. Really knows his stuff. I would take another course of his. Just pay attention and do your part and you'll get a good mark.
Simply, the man.
Also had Prof Kraay for SSH105, & LOVED both. He is such a fantastic professor. He is helpful, smart, clear, organized and approachable if you need to ask any questions. Go to classes, pay attention and you will do great in his classes.
Loved him.
Very good prof highly recommend you take him. He makes a boring class very interesting
worst class and prof ever
Prof. Kraay was a good lecturer and also funny at times. However this course is very hit or miss and the quizzes contain a lot of trick questions. I was getting an A+ at the beginning but my overall mark slipped down to a B-.
Prof. Kraay is awesome! This guy is very smart, patient, and takes the time to explain things. He even took time to meet with me in his office, and made the course the best/most memorable. Thanks Dr. Kraay!
Best prof I've had so far - so kind and interesting. Wish I could take this course again!!
Great Prof. He's entertaining to watch during lectures, and gives good examples with each topic within the subject area. The presentations are easy to follow and consistent class to class. I would recommend attending lectures as he breaks down the textbook material very easily and is very easy to comprehend the course in it's entirety.
His lectures are SOMETIMES boring, so get some coffee before going in and READ THE BOOK, cause it helps. If you miss class, don't worry since he records his lectures and puts them up online but try to go. DO THE PRACTICE QUESTIONS.
Probably the greatest prof in ryerson. Super easy teacher and his lectures are somewhat boring just looking at powerpoints, but he makes them interesting. you dont even have to show up to class because he puts his powerpoints and lecture over his powerpoints online. Tests are really easy and straight forward.
He's one of my favourite professors!! really funny and tries to make the material as clear and easy to understand !! you'll do fine without reading the textbook but even better if you do! he records his lectures so thats convenient if you miss one. TAKE HIS CLASSSS!!!!!!!
Very passionate. Sometimes explains wordy. Records his lectures online. Optional to attend class. Tests are easy if you study the content. Didnt use book for practice questions, but used it for further content explanation. Attend SLGs if you need help. Failed my 1st test but got 83 and 80 in my 2nd and 3rd test. Make visuals of the content to help
First year student taking his SSH105 course (was mandatory for my program). Best professor I had entering university. Would definitely recommend!
LOVE him
a very good prof, very detailed in his explanations and fair with his tests. If you study (even just off the notes) you'll be good. Doesn't do any stupid trick questions, and answers questions in class without demeaning students.
He's very clear with any complex ideas and always provides a lot of examples. His tests aren't worth worrying about given you study. The only time I ever used the textbook was to do some of the exercises before the tests and final. He's clearly passionate about what he teaches and makes a course that could be painfully boring almost enjoyable!
By far, one of the greatest profs @ Ryerson. He goes really in depth with his lectures and his tests are fair. If you really want an A in his course, attend the SLG's, attend your labs, and do the homework questions.
He knows his stuff. Goes the extra mile to make sure everyone understands key concepts. The material is dry as a bone, so he teaches well considering, though often gets repetitive in lectures. Also he records all his lectures which is the most helpful thing EVER when studying. I think hes one of the better teachers for this course.
He puts audio of his lectures online, those really help for the tests. The tests get harder because they're cumulative and there's a lot of stuff to learn. Study way in advance for tests (they're the only thing you do for this class anyway) and you'll get a good grade.
If you put in the work and study, you'll do well.
Lecture notes are good, usually what's on the exam. Textbook helped understand concept. His audio lectures were amazing
I loved his class! He always smiles when he talks and is helpful when you come to his office hours. His lecture slides are basically all you need to pass the class. I think on the test we were asked just one or two questions about material from the textbook (which were bonus questions anyway).
Kraay was an amazing professor. I expected Critical Thinking to be a dry, lengthy class but he explains everything perfectly. It's very black and white material and easy to understand if you take the time to look it over. Attend lectures, attend your tutorials and this class will be an easy A.
Amazing professor! So clear and precise in every lecture. Gives great examples and makes content so easy to understand. Made a dry class like critical thinking enjoyable. Highly recommended!
Such an amazing prof! His tests were straightforward and usually right out of the lecture notes, AND he puts audio recordings of his lectures online. Really friendly and helpful too! Loved his class
He is the prof version of John Greene. He is AMAZING. His class is easy and fun to understand. Although it is in a lecture hall he keeps the class engaged. He is funny but does it in a way that makes the concepts stick. Definitely take his class if you have the chance.
Klaas is a great prof. His lectures are very good, and he bans electronics in class to help focus on his lectures and its for the best. No surprises on his tests and makes a great effort to make sure all the content makes sense.
Go to his class and study off the slides he provides, and this course is a breeze.
Great Prof, course is easy but you have to work hard and go to every lecture, slides posted online helps
professor Kraay is the best pro in the Ryerson if you have to take SSH105. he is great, if you got any chance to take his class, take it.
Best professor in RU! Super clear explanations in class. I can feel that he prepares lecture and quiz really careful. It is not that difficult to pass as long as you review the material he gives. Definitely take his class if you have the chance.
Such a nice prof! He's very clear in his lectures and post recordings on D2L. They're very useful and helpful for midterms and finals. No trick questions on tests everything is straight out of the slides. Overall, an amazing and understanding prof!
So this is probably one of the toughest courses I've taken only because the course itself takes simple matters and turns it complicated. He was a good prof. The material was confusing. ATTEND THE SLG SESSIONS OUTSIDE OF CLASS!! These will help you soo much! Get a study group!! The more you talk through the logic, the easier it will be.
He is very easy and he explains stuff very clearly but slow, so that everyone in the class could understand unless you fell asleep. He is very approachable and he will be there for students. He wants his students to pass, he gave his slides and his audio recordings online. HE IS BAE JUST TAKE HIM YOU WOULD NOT REGRET THIS!
Prof Kraay is an amazing professor. Passionate, knowledgeable and extremely helpful. Recorded all his lectures, which was very helpful when studying for tests and the final exam. Tests were reasonable and fairly easy if you study his powerpoint slides. Believes in students and wants everyone to succeed. Highly recommend him.
SO GOOD
Professor Kraay is an exceptional Professor!! he took a difficult and dry topic and broke it down in such a way making it easy to learn and made the class interesting. If you read the textbook, attend lectures and do all of the practice questions then you should do well in this course. 4 tests, no papers.
To be honest, he's monotone but the way he explains the concepts are very clear! he uses good examples and post his lecture slides on D2L together with audio. He's very lenient when it comes to marking and accommodating. His quizzes are fair, you just gotta practice and participate in his tutorials to be able to understand it.
Professor Kraay had really interesting lectures despite them being with 400 students. He was incredibly clear and thorough while going through the required material and really cared wether his students were passing or not. I will say that you do not want him to mark your quizzes/tests/exam since he is much more difficult than the TAs are.
Amazing prof. Really passionate about the course. f you want a great mark attend the lectures take down the notes of the powerpoint slides you will pass. His Ta are really easy marks. 5/5
Kraay might scare you about failing this course in the beginning but if you study, you will do well. If you miss a lecture, he puts the audio online, what a gem! This course is interesting but also boring, you might fall asleep during the lecture. 3 quizzes weighted heavy, so study and do lots of practice questions! Tutorials are very helpful.
Great prof! Really helpful and he's understanding. Makes dry content easier, and PowerPoints summarize the content perfectly. Tests aren't difficult, but you do need to study and memorize/understand. The book is easy to read and has good examples. Lectures reflect book content, just more in depth. I'd recommend him, and take his class again!
Absolutely amazing prof. His lectures are incredibly clear; he breaks down material so well. Tests are fair, and there are no tricks. If I could have him do all my lectures, I would
He is the prof to have first year. He makes taking this class a great experience. Do as he says, and work on your own time and you are guaranteed an A.
A fantastic course taught by a remarkable professor! I would take any other class taught by him. Prof. Kraay is clear, organized, respectful, and fair.
Prof. Kraay is literally the best prof I've ever had! He genuinely cares about his students, not just academically, but emotionally too. He explains topics with incredible clarity and offers numerous opportunities for you if you aren't quite getting the material. SSH 105 is a pretty hard class just because of the content, but Kraay is the best EVER
Kraay lectures hundreds of students at once and it is my belief that he cares about each and every one of them. You can literally hear the smile in his voice. It's obvious that he is passionate about teaching and if you just put in the work, there is no doubt you will do a great job. Amazing prof, amazing man. So honoured to have had him.
Kraay is amazing! He is very friendly to all of his students and caring. He explains concepts very clearly and uses great examples. He provided audio recordings that were very useful. He is very approachable if you have any questions or concerns. I highly recommend him to every student!
I didn't love this class (mandatory) but I really liked Professor Kraay. A great guy and truly understanding. He also clearly enjoys what he teaches.
Great prof! Attend the lectures and do the readings and you'll get at least a 75%! He really cares about his students and works hard to make sure his students succeed!
This is a mandatory course, so you don't go into it expecting to enjoy the content that is being taught. Professor Kraay however, taught every lecture with such passion and charisma, that the content was that much more interesting. His lectures are very engaging, and he is hands down the best professor that Ryerson has.
Klaas was a great prof. Critical Thinking is an incredibly boring and slow course, but you could tell he was passionate about it and really knew the material well (I'm pretty sure he played a role in writing the curriculum?) He posts the audio and powerpoint slides for every lecture on d2l, so you don't have to go to class. Overall a great class
A great prof and person overall. Tests are always reasonable and to the point. Lectures were always interesting and he even uploads the audio of his lectures which is a GREAT help to auditory listeners!!
Amazing prof. Take SSH 105 with him and you're golden!
This class probably gave me the most anxiety. I was literally shaking before each evaluation. This class is composed of 4 quizzes. Final is 35%. Prof Kraay is definitely one of the best profs at Ryerson. My anxiety probably had to do with the fact that I was a 1st year student at that time but it also did not help having the lecture Friday evenings
i was nervous because many reviews i read said the course gets difficult. i didn't find that it was difficult at all, and i'm not really a student that keeps up with work. i never even opened my textbook and i always left class 15-30 minutes early for my next one across campus. you can tell he enjoys the topic and care about his students
If you don't go to class you wont pass at all. YOU CANNOT MISS ONE CLASS. He leaves blanks in his power-points and you are only able to find the answers in class. At the end of the class he does not re-post the power-points with the missing words, so you are unable to study off of them if you miss a class. And there is no textbook to look at. DONT.
Kraay is an AMAZING lecturer, PHL110 was a really interesting course, I actually learned something from him. However, you really cannot skip class (he doesn't post full PPTs) and he is a very tough grader. Even with my interest in the course, I found it really hard to balance such a demanding elective.
AMAZING prof. One of the best I have had in a long time. Tries to connect everything to the students and encourages discussions in class. . Don't really need the textbook because he posts all the topics in his ppt slides, which is great. Readings are dry but if you go to the lectures, you don't have to do the readings, which is great.
Klaas is a great prof. I highly recommend if you have to take SSH105, make sure he's your prof! You can tell he really cares about his students, I have nothing but respect for the guy. Make sure you attend lectures and do textbook exercises (EMPHASIS ON TEXTBOOK EXERCISES). He's a pretty fair marker and will let you know exactly what he wants.
This class is an easy A. Kraay makes the content easy to grasp with tons of examples and his lectures are great! Would 100% take his course again!
Exams are based on things discussed in lecture so you need to go to class. Papers are graded exceptionally tough, he doesn't bell curve but the average always tended around a C. Even if you make the improvements based on his comments, it won't mean you'll get a better grade because of how subjectively he marks.
Nice guy and cares about his students. BUT, really tough course for first year and really hard tests. Ridiculously hard. MUST go to class!!!
pretty easy as long as u have him. just write what he emphasizes in class and you are golden. dont ever try to write in ur own words, just write down (to highest degree) what he says in class and lecture notes.
Tests are way too hard for a first year mandatory class. Almost 40% failing by second quiz. So unnecessary to make this course so hard. Ya he cares but doesnt make it easy so whats the point
such an easy course if your at least somewhat smart
I freakin love this man. Best professor I have ever had. His lectures are so clear and concise, he knows exactly how to speak so that everyone paying attention really understands. He also records his lectures and posts them so that students who miss class can easily catch up. His tests are very fair and true to the content. I loved him and his work
The lectures were clear, concise, and they made sense. Prof. Kraay was well spoken and always knew what he was talking about. He could answer any question the students asked him about the material.
The course itself is really hard, but if anyone was to teach it right it's him. It's clear he's taught this course for a while because he is so good at explaining concepts that are really tough. It takes time to understand but he makes it a lot easier, and cares about his students. Get the textbook, its worth it!
Kraay was great lectures were amazing and he used so many examples if you didn't understand the concepts. If you didn't go to lecture then you won't do well. I didn't use the textbook much but it would have helped. Good class.
Great lectures and articulates the concepts very well. Course materials are very well organized. He provides slides that are fill-in-the-blank so you pay attention, and it's not hard to with this teacher. He also records his lectures along with the slides which is a big bonus.
This class is fairly easy if you show up to class and actually listen. The material is easy to understand. Before quiz's doing the textbook practice questions helps. The first two quizzes are only on the lectures covered before the class but the final exam and third quiz are on everything. I received an A and I rarely studied, I just showed up.
It's a shame Kraay teaches such a pointless class. He seems like a really caring prof, but I wouldn't know because the material he teaches almost makes him unlikeable.
His Critical Thinking class is good, however your marked only on4 tests throughout the semester and the final. Therefore if you are weak at test writing it may be difficult. Overall Kraay is a solid prof, good teaching style, very engaging, it truly sucks that he teaches such a useless class. Id love to take a history or Philosophy course of his
Knowledgeable and caring. He's as engaging as possible for a class with such dull content. Lectures are easy to follow, if you attend them and take notes you will do well. Would love to take a more 'fun' course with him, he's a great prof. He uses helpful examples and is to the point with teaching concepts. The tests and final are very fair.
Best professor I've had at Ryerson. Extremely enthusiastic and makes quite dull content bearable and sometimes interesting. Uses clear examples to make any term easily understandable. If you miss class, he posts the lecture slides and audio online. The tests have no surprises, very easy if you can grasp the basic concepts.
Okay, so this course is ridiculously hard, however, Klaas himself is an amazing professor. Show up to class, go to your seminars, go to the extra help in SLC and go to his office hours. I remember him joking that half the class fails this course, he isn't wrong. But he does want you to help and he will try his best to help you.
Had him for a boring class but is good at engaging students best he can lol. He cares a lot and provides so many resources both academically and personally. Provides good examples that demonstrate what hes trying to teach which helps a lot. For the class I had, as long as you pay attention and study what he says to study, youll pass.
Worst class I have ever taken. SSH 105 is hard and having him as a prof made it worse. I would not recommend taking it with him.
Personally I think Dr. Kraay is a great prof that gets his point across effectively and clearly. He is also willing to help his students understand concepts they couldn't grasp and gives helpful study tips. Tests (3 in total) are clear and straight forward IF YOU STUDY WELL! Reading the textbook material also REALLY helped me a lot!
Kraay is very caring, and tries his best to help students. Some do well in this course, others don't. Kraay goes at a slow pace and gives lots of examples. Study hard and you should be good. Be sure to prep well for tests, they aren't very easy. Go to SLG sessions, they help. P.S. Watch out for subarguements on "quiz" 3, those killed my GPA :'(
He is a good teacher, but if you do not like philosophy it will be a battle. The lectures are posted online, and the set-up is only four tests. As long as you keep on top of the lectures and ask for clarification, you will do well.
Kraay is a great prof and gives good examples to make concepts easier to understand. Just beware of the subarguments section on Test 3. Otherwise, easy course.
Kraay is amazing! He doesn't put anything on exams that isn't in the textbook or in lectures. As long as you actually read the book and go to lecture, its an easy class. Also, he posts all his lectures online so you can watch them from home too. He uses really good examples and really cares about his students and making sure everyone understands
He is, so far, one of the most lively profs I've ever had. The material is quite dull, but he makes lectures appealing. It's not hard to wrap your head around the content as long as you read the textbook, which isn't a lot, pay attention during the lectures, and do practice questions. It is evident that he cares that students succeed.
If you don't like this kind of stuff, you won't like the class. But overall, good professor and instructor.
Great professor and very knowledgeable with clear examples. His lectures are easy to follow along and even posts it on D2L for people who do not show up to class.
Klaas Kray is an awesome prof, his lectures are gripping as Kraay is constantly tying the material into real life events. A good chunk of the course mark is given to attendance and weekly assignments that are guaranteed 100 percents. Kraay also usually changes the weight of quizzes and mid terms to help the majority of the students grades.
Really fantastic prof! The lectures were clear and he was very helpful outside of class. Posted lecture slides, textbook question answers and audio for the lectures. If you can grasp the content you really should be fine for this course. Evaluations are straightforward and Kraay makes things very understandable!
Kraay is a great prof, really cares about his students. Found the course surprisingly easy. Lots of studying. The content in mostly all memorization, no essay or papers just tests. Can skip because he records and posts them on YouTube. Must go to tutorials, for every one you miss you lose 1% but dont gain percent by attending.
Professor Kraay is passionate about philosophy and tries to make what many consider to be a "hard course" easy to understand by using various examples and explaining concepts in multiple ways. His tests are straightforward and fair, so as long as you understand the material, practice textbook questions, and pay attention in lecture, you'll do fine.
Dr. Kraay was an amazing professor. His lectures were clear, concise, and organized. The course consists of 3 tests and a final exam, all of which are straight forward and you are able to adequately prepare for them. He really cares about his students and if you listen to the lectures and study enough, the course is an easy A.
Amazing prof! Ppl say this is a hard course but its actually very easy, people just dont study for it. Questions are straight from lectures and textbook. Very organized even gives answers for textbook questions, if you study you can easily get an A, its just people dont do the readings or study right and then complain its a hard course when its not
Dr. Kraay gives very interactive lectures. He is always there if you need help, and his instructions for notetaking in his lectures are commendable. Make sure you read the textbook and attend tutorials!!
AMAZING PROF
I love this man
Prof Kraay is great and I was never bored to attend leftures. The quizzes and final are solid study and memorize and you can easily do well. You dont really need to read the textbook to do well maybe go over the words in bold but going over the question really helps ssh is really not a hard course as long as you put the effort in
The best
I really loved Professor Kraay. The critical thinking class is mandatory for a vast majority of programs at Ryerson, and he knew this, but he somehow managed to do his absolute best to keep things fun and to keep our attention during lecture. He is such a genuinely sweet man. The class was dry but I never had an issue going because of him.
I can remember people clapping at the end of the last lecture. Prof. Kraay's lectures were inspiring, and it was clear that he understood the material well. He makes a great effort to ensure success,, but I personally found it to be very well done. If you approach the class with the right mindset, you will get a lot out of this class!
best professor ever! has a great passion for teaching and explaining the material. A person to look up to
pay attention, read the textbook & do the exercises, and it will pay off. kraay is a great prof!
The course content can be difficult but he tries his best to clarify. He is super helpful and acknowledges hard working students. (tutorials are mandatory)
Klaas Kray is such a kind professor, very smart, and a great teacher. However, he's a very tough grader. In our first essay, only 8 people out of 200 got an A, and the class average was 64%. He docked marks for citing something twice by accident and indenting something that wasn't meant to. His lectures are very clear, which is a good thing.
Professor Kraay is one of the best professors Ive had at Ryerson and clearly most students agree given his score on here. Fantastic lecturer, nice guy, professional, knowledgeable, all-around very impressive. Definitely recommend!
i really liked kraay. he is an incredible guy and his lectures are wonderful and clear. overall you can tell he puts a lot of effort into the lectures. the only problem i had in phl110 was the workload, since it was online. i had a mid term, 2 essays and a final exam. the mid term was relatively easy, but the essays absolutely destroyed my mark.
He's really good at what he does, super passionate about the course and makes it easy to understand. Heavy workload but worth it because it's super interesting.
He is definitely one of the most passionate professors I've seen which also means that he really likes to teach his lectures with a lot of information and thoroughly. He genuinely wants people to do well in his class so he will give examples and repeat materials so everyone is able to consume the information. Going to his lectures are important!
Professor Kray was a real gem. He explained the concepts needed in the course in extreme detail and was very passionate about it. Something we all need to consider is, if the person teaching genuinely enjoys their job. Professor Kray clearly loves teaching and the subject of Philosophy. Without a doubt, I strongly recommend this prof.
Kraay is a super nice professor and he understands this course is hard! He does his best to make each lecture interesting, I would suggest going to the SLG groups for extra help because it is easy to fall behind in this class.
Klass Kraay is a very nice prof, his lectures are very interesting and are not boring. He tries to engage his audience. His tests were heavy when it comes to short answers and they are lecture-heavy. If you wanna do good in this class I suggest you watch all lectures because it is very useful when it comes to test, weekly participation and exam.
Amazing lecturer, very organized, caring and makes the material easy. we had three tests, a final and tutorials (participation/related to the week's lecture). Make sure to pick a good TA who doesn't seem harsh at marking. NEVER leave a lecture to the last minute, and participate in tutorials(easy marks). Incredibly easy if you put the work in.
Asynchronous lectures, synchronous tutorials. A kind and caring professor with easy-to-understand explanations. I will be taking more philosophy courses because of this class!
Surprised by all the good feedback. Maybe this is due to COVID, but my online course with Prof. Klaas was needlessly difficult. On our first essay over 50% of the class got a 60 or lower and I personally felt like the feedback on my essays were nitpicking and didn't justify the mark. Never struggled so hard to get an 80% and still not achieve it.
Klaas Kraay is my favourite professor this year. He makes the course easily understandable and is kind and funny. The course itself can get confusing and Kraay marks kinda hard but do your notes and put In effort and you'll do fine.
He is a good teacher but tough grader.
Surprised by the good reviews. I'm usually a A range student but I found it impossible to do well in his class. I would take his feedback and apply it only to get the same grades. The class average was around 65% so I'm not exaggerating the difficulty. Lectures are very heavy but informative. Marking criteria was unclear and needlessly hard.
The course content isn't too challenging but students aren't given enough time to complete the tests. Everyone in my tutorial (approx. 15-20 ppl) complained that they couldn't complete the last 15-20% of the test. Doesn't seem fair. Weekly participation for tutorials + weekly tiny assignments. Textbook is provided free. mehh don't like this guy.
One of the hardest classes I've ever taken. He explains lectuers really nicely, But he grades tests extremely hard and You get no time to complete the test. When I emailed him about that he told me to go practice how to take a test, not the material, just how to take a test to be faster. Sadly this course is a must, try another prof if you can!!
Kraay is a good professor. All who received bad marks in my class blamed him for being a tough grader. His grades are fair. He taught the material well and it wasn’t difficult to understand. It may be just me but the content was thorough and properly explained. I very much enjoyed his class.
Engaging lectures with interesting selected readings. However, grading is extremely hard and unclear for short essays and commentaries we had to complete. You are marked pre-lecture understanding of the content. Even though this was an advanced level course, I think his exceptions are far too high... He expects PHD level analysis of every reading.
Professor Kraay is very kind, and he has such a great method of teaching. lectures are organized and student feedbacks for improvement are into consideration. Take detailed notes and watch the lecture ( you won't pass if you don't). U need to understand all the concepts and definitions (the material is consecutive), and attend his Q&A.
He's a nice person and wants to help but his tests are incredibly difficult, you're never given enough time, and it's basically impossible to understand what he wants from you. Lectures are very thorough but can be kind of boring.
Expects entirely too much too fast
Lectures are long, but they are repetitive, and it can sometimes confuse students watching. But, if you want to pass, you need to watch the lectures. Tutorials and weekly google forms are mandatory, but an easy 100. Tests are long, and can cause students to be on a time crunch, but the tests are fair, so if you study the content, you'll be fine.
The class is a bore, but Professor Kraay taught the material as if it were the most exciting thing in the world.
Best philosophy professor at Rye/TMU. Not only extremely knowledgeable but is a phenomenal teacher of the info too. Clear schedule for the course, clear expectations and tons of opportunities for support available. A very nice person, not rude or condescending at all and you can tell he really wants his students to learn.
An amazing professor. If you want to do well in this class I suggest watching all the lectures. You don't even need to read the textbook since 95% of his tests and the final exam comes from the lectures. Trust me, I fell behind in reading the book but still did well in the class because the lectures are so clear and he gives a ton of examples.
He's been great so far especially given that this course is online/asynchronous his lectures are pretty simple to follow and he gives great examples that makes all of this logical jargon sound pretty easy. His tests are fair in terms of difficulty but if you watch the lectures and at least skim over the reading you should be fine.
Super tough grader. Half the class (500 students) failed. Class average 50. Just doesn't want to see you graduate.
433 students failed the first test, 33% of students failed. The test is very heavy based with limited amount of time. The time given is absurd amount. Avoid this prof at all cost
Forget Kraay, your real teacher is going to be your TA.
For me, Kraay was awesome. I say that because I've gotten an A+ on every test. Just make sure you take careful notes during lectures, and don't stress about reading every single word of the textbook. The examples provided really make things clearer.
His lectures explain concepts well. He doesn't post full Powerpoints. You have to actually watch the lecture. I know people who skip to the parts that give you the answers, and wonder why they fail. You need to put in the time to not fail. Textbook is unless, lectures and tutorials are essential, and his tests will make you want to die.
Klaas Kraay is an amazing professor when it comes to teaching course material and simplifying it so everyone can understand it while also backing all of the material taught with several examples. The fault that he has is his test difficulty. His tests are always time-crunching and a matter of nonstop typing. Many fail to finishOnTimeAnd ArePunished
gives a very short time to do tests, is very hard at marking and he posts lectures from years ago. your ta is basically your professor.
If you watch the online lectures and show up to your tutorials, you'll do fine in this course. I don't really find the textbook useful, but that's just me. Test 1 was brutal because we didn't have enough time to complete it. So many people ended up failing. Test 2 and 3 were decent. Just read your notes and watch the lectures, that's all I can say.
There's not enough time given for the test and even If you are correct with your answers, each minute you do not submit, you lose 1%. The class average is unstable and drops frequently.
Don't listen to the other reviewers complaining about hard tests. If you don't put any effort in then ya don't be surprised when you get a 50%. Do the readings and take notes and you'll be just fine. He's great at breaking things down and obviously very passionate about what he does.
HE TALKS A LOT
never seen him. His TAs do everything from teaching to grading
Dr. Kraay was fantastic. Really enjoyed the lectures. The tests were straightforward if you studied and attended classes. Believe it or not, you have to watch the lectures and attend and participate in the tutorials to do well in the class. Surprised (but not really) that many of the negative reviews I see here did not take that into account.
His lectures were posted online for us to watch. I felt that he did a good job explaining the material. The tests though seemed very unfair as the marking was very difficult. it seemed impossible to get full marks from his questions which weighed on me for losing lots of marks.
Kraay is a pretty good professor, his lectures were online and felt he explained things pretty good. The tests however were graded by TA's and mostly would lose marks for some of the dumbest things
I signed up for this class to be in person, on the first day the class was full with students. Then someone says it's online. If I knew this class was online I wouldn't have took it. It's already confusing enough as it is, to learn it all online made it 10x harder. His video lectures were great, but this course was just a headache. Tests were brutal.
Test were very difficult. Everything was pre-recored, never saw him once. However, his lectures go into a lot of detail and he explains concept great. His Ta's do everything from teaching in tutorials to marking tests.
this course is online and the only things you will see from professors Kraay is online lectures which are prerecorded the previous year.
his lectures were very explanatory but if you didn't write exactly how he defined things on the test, the TAs will take marks off...
Super nice guy, his q and a sessions are extremely helpful and hes excited to help students understand. Hes a great speaker and lecturer that uses quality examples.
Get ready to take in a lot of information, and understand absolutely none of it. That being said, there's nobody else other than Kraay that I think could have taught this class well. His lectures explained things in a way that helped you really retain the info. Wouldn't take the class again, but thanks to Kraay's lectures I did pretty well.
if it weren't for prof. kraay's lectures, i probably would've done much worse in this class. he's an amazing lecturer and is super thorough in explaining everything. the material was a bit difficult sometimes, but you'll do fine as long as you watch the lectures and do the readings.
He is the most well-spoken professor I've ever had. His lectures are very to the point, and he uses examples that will stick with you. If you take notes on his lectures, you should have no problem passing the course; I got over a 90 on every test. All the bad reviews come from those who did not put in the work and did not like the result of that.
Kraay was actually a good prof I loved the many ways he would explain one thing. His tests are pretty straightforward just make sure you do the readings and lectures! Take detailed lecture notes. SSH was one of my easiest class thanks to dr. Kraay!
SSH105 is not an easy course if you're not willing to put bare minimum time in (watch the lectures, go to tutorial and complete tutorial participation). That being said, if you go to tutorial having watched the lectures I can't see why you should fail this course. Kraay is a great lecturer, wish it could've been in person. Beware of your TA
Very clear and straight to the point with instructions, repeats concepts students have difficulty with, always gives insightful feedback and is just a very knowledgable professor. I have a lot of respect for him, would no doubt take again.
has good lectures but marks hard
Tests are marked by TAs so it depends on what TA you get. The prof just posts lectures which are quite informative and well made. Dont fall behind on them every week and readings is not too important but it helps.
good prof, ta matters a lot more. uploads weekly lectures and tutorial every week. first test is really hard but worth 10% you need to read the textbook. second and third tests are better and worth more. final exam was in person and hand written and was reasonable. Mostly true and false, and you have to explain why its true and false.
He is a nice prof but hard class. Do not think this is an easy class, be ready to read and do not slack off.
Kraay is a really nice professor. I believe that the course itself is designed badly hence why so many people fail. It all matters on who your TA is since they are the ones marking your tests. His lectures on quite long and do get boring, you need to make sure you're making good notes.
Great prof. He explains everything with such ease as well as many examples and different ways to view certain topics. Everything genuinely depends on your TA. Once I had 2 Ta's accidentally mark my test. My original Ta gave me 10% lower then the other TA that accidentally marked it.
- hardest class but great teacher who gave multiple examples to help understanding - hard concepts must put in work - because online the test were extremely hard but the exam was in person and much easier - grade based on 3 tests 1 exam and 10% participation/completion
amazed to see so many good reviews on this prof? His course was the worst. Average for our class was low (a plan for failure) lectures r online & the Ta's who ran the tutorials were not useful (gave no feedback).no reviews & no matter how confident u r abt the tests, you'll get disappointed. Takes no account for students mental health. just awful.
I don't know why this prof has so many good reviews. This was an incredibly difficult course and the online lectures did not make it easier. Tests were marked very harshly. You need to understand both the content and write it the way the prof wants you in order to receive full credit. Class average was very low (50) Prepare to work hard just pass.
The professor is actually good and uses many examples to make sure you understand the content. The course is a little bit difficult but I can guarantee you that you can get an A- or A if you really put in the work (reading, exercises, attending his Q&As, etc.). You have to remember that the TAs are the ones who will be marking your tests and exams.
Prof Kraay is passionate about what he does. The lectures took me forever to both fill in and understand. The semester was so compressed that we had to do both a 2 hour lecture and a test (1 1/2 hour+) in one week. This left me with little time during the days to complete other course homework. Also, use his exact words for full marks on tests.
SSH 105, IS THE WORST COURSE I HAVE EVER TAKEN. Ok if you really need to take the course I suggest like literally scanning each and every reading he assigns (do your textbook!) and make notes on the lecture. He grades so tough no matter how much effort you put in. GPA can be affected negatively with this course so study hard.
Professor Kraay explains concepts really well in my opinion, gives many examples to make the content easy to understand. This course is cumulative therefore you must really understand the earlier material to understand the later concepts. Last thing, don't waste your time reading the textbook and doing the practice problems.
The course work may be hard, but the prof is very clear/concise & gives great examples to help you understand. He holds various drop-in Q&A sessions a week on zoom; wants students to do well. I didnt use textbook & got A+ so its not mandatory but good to use *command F* & search for subjects. Watch lectures & take notes and itll be easy/interesting
Hard course, but good prof. Lectures are long but VERY thorough, breaking down concepts & giving multiple examples. Online tests were good; you need to understand the material in order to do well, not just copy & paste your notes. In-person final exam was fair. Overall a sweet and funny guy, but you really do need to try in this course.
Prof Kraay was a good prof, all his lectures were online videos which kinda sucked with mandatory tutorials. Graded by 4 tests (3 of which were online) with weekly participation quizzes
He was good. Tests varied in difficulty. Lectures were long and this class isn't something I would willingly take so it wasn't really for me. He explained things well. Exam wasn't too difficult either. His class was entirely online however. He seems like a really nice guy.
SSH 105 was not an easy course but it was doable. you DO NOT have to read the textbook; there will be one or two questions at most in the tests form it (none in the exam). The lectures are great and there are plenty opportunities to ask him questions. He is a quick responder but in case of grading, the Ta does it... my Ta was not good at all.
Lectures were pre-recorded and posted online so engagement was non-existent. Tutorials were much nicer I found. Read the textbook! Tests were open book but still study! You have to actually understand the subject matter in order to do good. Seems like his class would be more enjoyable if it was delivered in person.
Dont take him
Bro edged us using our midterm marks for a whole class. he aight tho.. fresh cut too.
Klaas was an interesting lecturer and the content wasn't too difficult to understand. However, there was an in class writing assignment and out of class writing assignment every week. He never gave feedback on anything (he said come to office hours). In the end if you're a student that has to work, this class will be completely unmanageable.
Professor Kraay is simply incredible! The way he describes examples in such an understandable and down to earth way as well as his character which effortlessly exudes inspiration, make him hands down one of the best professors I have ever had!
Gives good concepts to understand lectures
Quiz & assignment every week based on readings. Readings are 15-20 pages and you need to remember all of it. Insanely harsh grader. This is not a bird course
He is a nice guy but a very harsh grader, many people dropped the course because of this. DO NOT TAKE IF YOU WANT AN EASY ELECTIVE!!!
Difficult class, honestly would not recommend it if you're just looking to fill up an elective. By the time the final happened, half the class seemed to have dropped out. I believe the class average was in the 50s for the midterm. Prof is nice and has a lot of knowledge but the class is tedious.
Knows what hes talking about and has a very well formatted and interesting lecture. Hard marker at times but a very patient and nice professor all and all.
Professor Kraay's class was challenging but manageable with engagement. Lectures were thorough, and online tests required understanding the material. While the workload was heavy, unstuckstudy ai proved to be a helpful study tool alongside the textbook. Overall, a rewarding experience for those willing to put in the effort.
Test heavy
the prof explains well in lectures but be prepared to take the test as it was formatted differently than the material he taught us. it was also marked very harshly.
The material may seem easy and you may think it's common sense but it's not. Tests are graded horrible. There's only 3 tests that's determine you mark. Don't take this course if you don't need it.
Hes a nice professor and hes good at teaching, but his tests are pretty hard, and he brings up the same topics way too often. The subject is also SO boring, I wish theyd remove it as a requirement for most social science majors. He records the lectures which is nice. Would never take this subject or his class again personally.
I know that a lot of people struggle with this course, but I find that if you take notes in the lecture, read the textbook, and do the practice questions in the textbook, it's not too bad. Prof. Kraay seems like a really nice guy, and his lectures are very comprehensive. I will say that the test grading can be a little bit tough.
40 percent of this class is failing, so he suddenly decided to increase every students' mark. My friend mentioned that he is actually deleting the comments here. Terrible. please avoid him. I am going to file a report against the TA.
Honestly... ssh 105 was a really bad course. Even when you dedicate hours to read the textbook, lecture slides and attend the lectures, he ends up talking too much and going off track. We were all lost and trying to figure out what is happening. Most ta's were not much help either. All of his lecture slides that he posts are missing information.
Ssh 105 was horrible, 50% students were failing. The TA's are not helpful whatsoever. Prof Kraay talks SO much he barely even explains his lecture slides. There's only 3 tests weighed 10%, 20% and 30% which determine your grades as well as the final which is 35%. Avoid him at all cost. Horrible.
He's a nice man and can teach well but this course is quite content heavy to the point where you're genuinely not going to retain all of the test material or feel really prepared when you take it. His TA's mark hard as well. Most of the class seems to be struggling. Just don't take this if you don't have to; trust!!
I have seen he seriously had a smirk on his face when he mentioned that 50 percent of the class was failing! unbelievable. not so understanding there are many students struggle with this course! Obviously, he enjoys doing that to poor students! AVOID PLEASE AVOID! Btw he deletes the comments here!
I took SSH 105 as a required in Psych 1st year, Prof Kraay is great! Before saying he's a bad prof we all must think if we did our part as a student, don't take bad comments as a reference. My tips: attend EVERY class, SLG sessions, tutorials. Take notes by hand. listen to him carefully. On slides some parts are empty so take photos of the screen.
He is obviously very passionate and knowledgeable, but he expects his students to be the same. He is very tough at grading and contradicts himself in lecture often leading to confusion on tests. Nearly 1/3 of the class failed both the first and second test worth 35% total. He has incredibly difficult test examples and will reference niche things.
Kraay does as well as he can to explain the course content, he uses many examples, he repeats his sentences, and if u ask him questions he will genuinely try his best to make sure u understand and succeed. however the content itself is difficult to grasp, which is why ppl struggle. if u do struggle, ask him questions, go to lecs + SLGs, TAKE NOTES.
he was a good lecturer, he records his classes but doesn't post the full slides, the slides he posts are missing most of the content you have to fill it all in. make sure you go to class, take notes and actually understand whats going on
really passionate about what he teaches and is really helpful w course content if you get the chance to talk to him, he has slg sessions if you have trouble with course material but attend the lectures, take notes, and participate in your tutorials and you will be okay. It's important to practice the material + textbook has good practice questions.
nice guy, but class was hard to follow. tests were graded heavily and were often difficult even if you did study. this was mandatory for me so i had no choice but to take it. if you have a choice, take something easier, save yourself the trouble
Prof Kraay was a good professor because you can tell that he actually knows what he's talking about and enjoys teaching. However don't take this class unless you have to because his tests are terrible and his marking system is stupid. Almost 400 people failed the first test, and one true or false question will be worth 4 points.
the class was difficult and stressed me the most, definitely dropped my gpa...however i learned a lot about critical thinking! prof kraay is a great guy which made me not dread the lessons as much. lecture heavy, test heavy, use of a textbook but kraay provides for free online. worried to see my final grade, but i don't regret taking this course!
yalll i love prof kraay. i was terrified before taking ssh105, but he's so good at explaining the content and clarifying material. he posts lecture recordings but doesnt post filled in version of slides so still show up or get notes from a friend. 100% do the textbook questions and listen to the lectures, and you will more than surely succeed !!!
Very passionate about the course and the topic. Although half the class is failing, he gives a good criteria and is very caring always posting about SLG meetings. It is not an easy class, and will require tons of hours to study in order to prepare for tests
Critical thinking can be tricky for some, but if you actually use the tools Prof. Kraay provides you with, like his lecture recordings, textbook questions and answers, plus the help from his TAs and SLG sessions, then you'll do great. He's actually a great professor and very articulate which makes his lectures easy to follow.
I think that Kraay is a good professor, but this course itself was extremely difficult. I suggest you print/write out the slides beforehand and fill in the blanks during lectures, and take notes on what he is saying. He's a nice professor but gives challenging tests. Do not take this class if it isn't mandatory, it is extremely difficult!
This is just one of those classes you have to take for most TMU students, and what a relief to have it over with. Would record extra material (1hr usually) because he wouldn't get to it in class. I re-listened to every lecture and re-read the textbook to PASS this class. TIP: Try to review material after each lecture, it is ALL cumulative.
He's a fine professor overall. Nice guy, but I found his lectures confusing at times. He'd spend a lot of time overexplaining concepts I personally found simple, yet would gloss over the more complex ones. The textbook explains most concepts a bit better than he does. He has a no laptop policy, which is odd (I never once followed it).
Prof. Kraay is a nice man who's passionate about his work. Difficult class, even though I did the work. Textbook readings = long, MUST do practice questions/ask TA for help. This is logic, so you need to put in the work to understand it, but don't worry too much. I got a 50 on one test and 86 on the next, just do your best and sleep well b4 exam
The course had 3 tests and 1 final. Prof Kraay is very nice and extremely fair. The course is very tedious and requires lots of attention and understanding. It was a required course and I honestly wouldn't have taken it with anyone else as he posted audio recordings. Doesn't allow laptops in lectures, you need permission from him which is weird
I am very grateful for having Dr. Kraay as my teacher for first year. He finds ways to make the boring material engaging and relatable. He gives you all the material for success, how well you do in the course is dependant on you and your TA. SSH105 is somewhat boring, but it sets the foundation of your learning and understanding for university.
Professor Kraay is great. Though many seem to struggle with critical thinking in general, Kraay breaks it down very simply and repeats himself to make concepts as easy to understand as possible. Many ressources are available if you have difficulty like SLG sessions. Some TA's may be tough graders though.
Professor Kraay is awesome! That being said, SSH 105 was an incredibly difficult course. It took a lot out of me and I certainly spent long hours preparing for exams. It is very content heavy and some of the concepts can be difficult to understand. Give yourself lots of time to study and prepare! Study groups are also a great idea!
Kraay was a great prof. The concepts in this course are difficult to grasp, BUT they are fundamental if you are doing any kind of arts degree. READ THE TEXTBOOK.
Professor Kraay was a good, he clearly explained content and was willing to answer questions. The TAs on the other hand were completely useless. Each TA marked differently. Please be aware of the TA that you receive as this can negatively affect your grade. My TA also refused to give out their email for questions. Other TAs I heard were useful.
Avoid at literally any cost. Take it in summer if you have to. But take ur class with literally anyone else. You've been warned.
He cares for his students but his lectures are far too long and somehow contain no content but also a CRAP ton of content at the same time. He was probably the best SSH105 prof, but the material is the worst part.
bro bro bro.... if u love ur mental health just don't even click to register for his class. I PROMISE U, u don't want to even glance at his name. Him and the ta's are so selective when marking and it will take you arguing your grades for them to even think abt grading you fairly. At this point it's not on the students, but on the prof and ta's.
He explained all information very clearly with good examples. Tutorials were mandatory and your grade depends on the TA you have, only some were good. They give group work and smaller focused lectures to make sure you understand the info. They also grade all your work. There were many student led opportunities for growth and more understanding.
His lecture style was good not great. Read the chapter prior to class so you're not lost. I found that making a "fill in the blank" document (basically the lecture slides) was easier and saves time. My TA, Caleb, was very understanding and just wanted to help you learn. The tests looked for specific answers, be CLEAR and CONCISE for full marks!
Prof Kraay is an clear and knowledgeable lecturer. No trick questions on tests/exams and lectures are interesting. Would take other courses with him.
LOL Kraay was a cool guy, but if you don't read the textbook BEFORE each class you fall behind. You also need to be very particular with your answers on tests or else you'll get marks off for not mentioning ONE specific word. He still gave great feedback and was willing to help, but there is not enough work to pull your grade back up.
Probably my most engaging and interesting prof in 1st year. He encourages class participation even with hundreds of students. He's a great lecturer, with fair tests, and he teaches something which is incredibly difficult for most in a teaching style akin to the flow of water. He's a pro, and you can tell. Great prof.
This professor teaches in such a cryptic way. His lectures are hard to understand at time, and are mandatory since he only posts skeletal versions of the slides. Try and find a different professor.
tbh only take this class if your ready to fail, idk how this prof has good ratings, this sem for the midterm 40 percent of the class had below 50 percent ( mind you there were 400+ plus people in the course), grades were only determined from tests, and exam if u skipped a tutorial theres a deduction . DO NOT RECOMMEND!
Only tests, lectures are mandatory, the tests are cumulative and matter a lot since there are no assignments. He was a decent teacher it was the coursework that ruined the whole experience.
He banned all types of technology during his lectures, he expected all the students to print out the slides and fill in the blanks in lectures, i gave up on going. Tutorial are mandatory. Tests are horrible, i forgot the exact numbers but 157 people failed the first test, and178 people failed the second test... now if that doesnt tell you something
People complain because this course proved they can't handle uni lol, prof Kraay was the goat, extremely engaging lectures, and gives detailed vids of what he looks for on tests and how to improve, what more could you ask? Loved this prof fr
only take this class if it's mandatory and if u do, take it with this prof. compared to others he's probably the best one even tho he banned tech in his lectures (i still used it anyway lol) and he explains things in a weird way. its the course material itself that's a headache but this prof himself is a good person and he wants students to do well
This is a warning to not take this class.
Whatever you do, do not take this course unless you need to. I got A's in all my other classes except this class. He over-explains every concept and is super boring. I've never had a course more than this. Tutorials are even worse and I hated going. The only good thing about the class was that it was in TRSM and the seats were comfortable.
dont take this class unless you have to, if you do take it with kraay, hes a good prof its the course and the material that is hard, makes no sense and is weird. lowest grade i recieved EVER was in this class. theres also a test every five seconds theyre all cumulative and you have to attend every tutorial and if its after the class, its pointless
Professor Kraay is such a sweet prof. He is very thorough with his explanations and his slides. He is also very understanding. One of the best profs for SSH 105. As long as you attend all the lectures and the tutorials, and put in a little effort it should be good.
If you have to take this class, take it with this professor. Most people don't like him is because the content is pretty hard to understand, but Professor Kraay is amazing at breaking it down and explaining it in a really clear way. Yes, you do need to attend all lectures and tutorials, but if you just put in the effort, you can definitely do well.
If you want to get a good grade, put the work in. Grading is tough, as you need to understand AND apply the concepts; no slacking if you want to pass. Reading the textbook definitely helps with grasping the idea, and the homework questions are good review for tests. He doesn't allow laptops in class, so print out the slides or bring a notebook.
Beware. The 4.1 rating is fraudulent - heard rumours he deletes some of his bad reviews. Does way too much to make the class as unnecessarily frustrating and difficult as possible iykyk. The content of this course is not hard, the fact that everyone finds it hard is a reflection of the prof and his policies and tendencies.
klaas was awesome lolol i loved his class, idk why so many people found his class hard .. you just need to attend the class with his provided skeletal notes, read the textbook chapters (which some chapters were actually interesting to read), attend tut, + do chapter exercises (no need to do all) .. i would totally take a class w/ him again !!!!!
This course is one of those courses that filter out students who aren't meant to be in university. Are the tests hard? Not if you study. Are you going to have to put in effort? Yeah, but it's not that hard. Fantastic professor. Awesome subject if you want to be there.
The class isnt easy at all, ngl a lot of ppl here be lying abt their grades, youll know when he posts the class avarage. When it comes to the prof, he was very nice, and cared about his student. The way he teaches is very detailed and understandable, but sometimes he overdoes it. He also expects a lot, so keep that in mind.
