Totally amazing professor! He's enthusiastic funny and smart and he really wants students to think about philosophy. The readings are hard but his lectures make things clear. I would take any courses he offers!
Intro To Existentialism Good lectures, excellent selection of reading. His major problem was that he was unclear on the assignments about what he wanted then ranted to the class that we missed the point of what he wanted on the assignments, making people down as a result. All in all a fair and reasonable guy; try to get clarification on all essays.
The first assignment was pass/fail luring most of the class into a false sense of security. But do not be fooled. He marks suprisingly hard and does not fully explain what he wants in assignments. Also, never listen to "there is no right answer". There is, and he wants it bad. Also, he repeats the 2nd half of every sentence. That can get annoying.
An enlightening class. Tough readings and lots of them, but Klaus goes through them quite thoroughly in class so you can usually pick up what was missed during your initial reading. Nice man and very approachable. Easy on the eyes, too...
Pass/Fail assignment was one of the most amazing experiences of my life and didn't lead to false expectations. Fair and apporachable guy. Enthusiastic about teaching and the experiences of his students. Great lecture style and a great voice. Nice looking as well.
Ridiculously attractive! <3 Really good to listen to, and really easy to approach. Totally willing to talk about the material after class. Really good with allowing for discussion and keeping it focused. Phil 290: Death and Dying was fantastic, take it if you can! One of my favourite profs ever! (I didn't find him too hard, I got an A in the class)
Jahn is one of the best profs I've ever had. He's funny, excellent lectures, and is obviously very interested in the subject matter he teaches. Assignments were marked hard, but fairly. If you like philosophy and don't care if your papers get marked a bit slowly, this is the prof for you. All around excellent.
Klaus provides clear and interesting lectures. He has a vast philosophical knowledge base and is extremely helpful if you meet with him outside of class. He is one of the most approachable phil profs at UVic. I took both 211 and 290 with Klaus. He has high expectations from his students (time investment), but is a fair marker. Highly Recommend!
Yay, Prof Jahn! One of the best I've had in my entire undergraduate degree. Exceedingly clear and helpful.
Kant is ridiculously hard but Klaus made it seem clear in his lectures. Lots of assignments but you really learn by doing them. The course would be better if it was a year long.
Took over for Kluge in bioethics halfway through the course. Unlike Kluge who tells you what to think Jahn had us think for ourselves. Presented material in a much more interesting way, and was really approachable. Funny guy too.
Klaus is an excellent teacher. He had a tough job taking over in the middle of the term for Kluge, but he made the transition seem easy. He knows his stuff, and is good at thinking on the fly when asking or answering questions. He also likes turtlenecks and looks GOOD in them;)
Hard class. Good prof.
I haven't taken any other courses in philosophy, but this one seemed hard. Tons of hard reading but they were interesting and the prof was good about lecturing on the stuff we read. Really nice guy too. He accepted my assignment late.
Klaus has been my most pleasant surprise at UVic. Wonderful man, excellent teacher (not simply a 'professor'), and someone who has profoundly impacted my life with his course material and teaching method. I strongly encourage any student interested in philosophy to take one of his courses. It would be a shame to attend UVic and miss out on Klaus.
Amazing class, and an amazing teacher! Really respects students ideas, and has you think for yourself. Knows his stuff too. I really learned a lot. Take classes with Klaus!
This guy totally rocks! He's teaching us phenomenology, and completely blew my mind! Like Husserrel he can make you get all excited about a streetlamp or his green bottle. THIS IS PHILOSOPHY!
Makes coming to UVic worth it.
Awesome class! Best prof I've ever had. class notes were very clear and concise. The most interesting class by far.
His lectures are really impressive. When he's talking about the course material, he is amazing at clearly dissecting and categorizing the book's argument, and when the class moves to discussion, his answers are almost always clear and interesting. Unfortunately he takes a bit of time doing these things so a lot of course material is not covered.
Klaus is a genius. He knows his stuff very thoroughly, particularly in this course, since it's abundantly clear that he's a hick in disguise and has had to put fist to face on more than one occasion. Fair marker, if you pay attention in class you'll be fine. What more do you want? I would hang out and drink beer with this guy everyday if I could.
His bottle isn't green but who cares. He knows Heidegger and Kant too and man he can teach them! He's a great lecturer and very approachable outside of class.
Yup!!!We have to agree with the other posts on here...Klaus Jahn (pronounced Yan) is one of the BEST phil profs we have ever had. He definitely tries to sort out the facts from the book that you are going to need for the exams and always give you several choices of questions on exams. Just read the book and you will do well:)
Fantastic prof. Accesible, passionate, personable. It's obvious that this prof likes teaching and likes his students. He is also knowledgable on his topics and stuborn and open about his beliefs, which I appreciate more than feigned indifference. Make sure to take advantage of his office hours!
Klaus Jahn understands that people don't hand things in on time or always want to come to class. The material is more for interest than it is for exams. The 3 or 4 assignments we did ( can't quite remember) were more a test of wills and morals than they were about material. Good slack class that makes you think about yourself and about dying!
This course has profoundly impacted my perception of what it really means to live. Klaus is exceedingly well-spoken (and very good looking), while his lectures are eloquent and insightful. He takes the time to examine and discuss core concepts and is especially passionate about the value of Philosophy, which is very refreshing. Highly recommended!
Fantastic class and prof! Knows the material cold, and presents it with style. Nice shoes too!
Because of Klaus and this class I finally figured out what it means to try and live the examined life. A true philosopher and a true lesson in philosophy.
A great professor, and I'm not just saying that because he has a foxy voice, ahum. If you attend class and do a good job in your essays you'll do fine. And he loves a person who asks questions, just make sure it's concise. the book is a bit daunting.
An excellent class. Makes the effort to take up current events and ties them into the book. Jahn is an excellent speaker and very knowlegable about the course material. Highly recommended!
He is a good man. And a lecturer who inspires. You will likely get the grade you deserve, as his ethical stance would only permit such a thing. Although he is the wrong gender for me, he is in the hot plus category if he is your style. Teddy bear- like with an even more attractive brain
I finally got to take Kant with Klaus! He's an excellent lecturer and knows every detail of the Critique but because of that we didn't get through the whole book which is understandable because it is the Critique. The class should not be 50min but instead be 90min.
Great professor, he teaches an interesting topic very well
I agree that Kant is super hard but learning him with Klaus makes it easier. He is a great lecturer and has a HUMUNGOUS vocabulary!
Absolutely fabulous professor!! Very clear expectations and a very fair marker. He is very funny and a nice guy. Highly recommend!
I'm not sure what's wrong with the last last student whose posted, but Klaus is amazing as a prof! He speaks really clearly and explains things in detail and is easy to approach for help in office hours. Maybe the problem is with the student and not with Klaus.
Klaus is a wonderful prof! He is engaging, personable, and clearly loves what he teaches. If you take philosophy with anyone, you'll miss out if it's not with him.
Klaus is a really great prof and really cares about his students. He is very passionate about philosophy but if you are not super interested in philosophy, it may be hard to keep yourself focused in his class.
Klaus's death and dying class changed the way that I live my life. He made us think of things that I never would have thought on my own, and even though some of the stuff was hard to read, Klaus's humor and intellect made the course amazing.
Klaus was such a good prof! One of my favs! He kept the class so interesting and was not boring at all. Would highly recommend his class to anyone, speaking as a first year student who toke his second year class. And his charming looks helped me come to class.
Klaus is wonderful! I took two of his classes and his wit and charm are quite apparent. He is very passionate and knowledgable about philosophy. If you ask questions and participate he'll grow to like you and learn your name. If you go to class and do the readings you'll do well. Klaus is extremely nice and approachable. Favourite prof.
By far one of my favorite professors. Classes are interesting and in depth, and questions are answered fully and clearly. Rarely gives exams and lets class out early on a regular basis. Sometimes I leave class with a headache because some concepts are hard to grasp, but Klaus overall does a very good job at explaining.
I am in Klauses 100 class and he's easily my favorite prof! His lectures are excellent, and even though the class is late in the day, it's easy to stay focused. It is nice that he ends five or ten minutes early though, but then he hangs around to answer questions for as long as students stay. Very approachable man.
Ethics of Violence War and Terrorism is a must take for anyone interested in international politics, armed conflict or going into international law. Klaus knows armed conflict and speaks intelligently and at length about almost any conflict past or current. The fact that the class is so closely tied to the most current events is the biggest plus.
I liked him as a prof, despite being only mildly interested in the topic. His lectures are interesting, and he like to interact with students during class. One major complaint- its the end of the semester, and I have not gotten a single assignment back. I handed in my final today with no idea what my grade is. Other than that, I would recommend.
Klaus was always available for extra time to help with papers and he always gave good advice. I am not in philosophy and so I was intimidated at first, but Klaus made the material accesible. If you go see him in office hours, he will always make time for you. He really seems to like his students!
Klaus genuinely cares about his students and their learning experience. Willing to answer questions via email and forum, and provide a greater understanding of any topics within or without of the course materials, and extremely well versed in his field, I would strongly recommend you take his courses.
Klaus is really reasonable in the way that he notices when you show up and show interest in class, and repays you with entertaining and gripping lectures, as well as genuine interest in his students success. Exceptional philosophy professor, for the laughs and the knowledge, its always a pleasure to attend class.
Amazing Prof, extremely approachable with clear-cut grading and very reasonable expectations. He notices when students are engaged and takes time to answer all questions. He was very generous and understanding when I needed an extension on a paper. He has really funnyengaging lectures and loves a debate! Shame class was so long everyone was tired
Klaus is a Kant genius and without a doubt one of the most engaging and energetic lecturers I've ever had. His passion for the subject is infectious. Very good at answering questions and always makes time for you in office hours.
Klaus offered a wonderful introduction to philosophy! His lectures are clear and engaging and his powerpoint slides really help to get through some very hard reading. He is by far my most favorite professor in my first year and I will be taking another class with him this september. He is also very good looking!
Every student at UVic should take at least one class with Klaus. Easily the best professor of my first year. Understands the difficulty of University and genuinely cares about the students doing well
Took a class from Klaus a number of years ago and realized that I never gave a rating. I really enjoyed the class with Klaus, we went into a lot of detail of the Critique of Pure reason, and extensively parsed the text. We ended up only getting through about a third of the book, but it was worth it to understand the detail of the material.
I took Existentialism with Klaus some time ago, but really enjoyed it. We focused specifically on Martin Heidegger and parsed the text of Being in Time in great detail and explanation. Not what I expected, but a welcomed surprise. Klaus was welcoming of feedback and discussions after class. Really enjoyed.
He's very engaging, you can just see how in love with philosophy the man is. All he wants is to bring his students into this wonderful world of philosophy. Also if you sit in the front he'll use you as a prop in demonstrations like "if i shoot him, that's morally wrong" and pretends to shoot you. That's always fun
The best prof I have ever had in Uvic so far, so friendly with students and super helpful with the course material. Sometimes could be a hard marker, but it is worthwhile to take a class with him. If you want to take a philosophy course, Klaus is definitely your best option !!!
Klaus was a great prof! Good amount of homework and tests. Awesome presence through coursespaces, and answers questions quickly!
Klaus was an amazing professor. His lectures are late in the day, but he was so funny and enthusastic that it was easy to stay focused. My favorite professor this year!
Klaus is smart, funny, passionate, caring, and inspirational. His death & dying class has made me rethink so many things, and has actually changed my life. I can't think of another class that I've taken at UVic that I can say that about. If its offered, take this class!
Klaus has everything thing that a good prof has: respectful, patient, friendly, funny and helpful. Talking with him is just like eating candies and you will enjoy his words a lot. However, you really have to work hard for his class because he expects you to read and write a lot . He is definitely the best prof in Uvic, recommend to all of you !!!
Klaus Jahn is easily one of the best philosophy profs at Uvic. Inspired, passionate, and let's students draw their own conclusions about the material.
Klaus is an incredible professor! The course is pretty simple, and it might be good to read the textbook to get a better idea of the concepts he brings up, but he allows for plenty of time to ask questions, and works through the concepts completely in class. Definitely take a class with this prof!
Some how makes the topic of death and dying the highlight of my day. I am actually occasionally sad on days where I end early and don't have his class. Great lecturer, keeps it entertaining. Keep doing you boo.
Klaus has been the best professor I've had yet. He's intelligent, engaging, funny and makes every class useful and interesting. There's not a lot of homework which is nice and he's a good marker. Talking to him after class is the highlight of my day.
What can I say? He's a champ. Very entertaining and very open to talk about things with you. Phil 100 isn't really a GPA booster, but it shouldn't hurt your mark that much. A very interesting course taught by one of the best lecture profs I've ever had
prejudice, no desire for fame, could ever distract him in the slightest from broadening and illuminating the truth. He encouraged and gently impelled others to think for themselves; despotism was foreign to his nature. This man, whom I name with the utmost thankfulness and reverence; his image, to my delight, stands always before my mind.
I have enjoyed the good fortune of knowing a philosopher, who was my teacher... His open brow, built for thought, was the seat of undisturbed contentment and joy; there flowed from his lips a discourse rich in thought; jest and wit and humour were always at his command... Nothing worth knowing was indifferent to him; no faction, no sect, no
Klaus does everything in his power to make the content clear and interesting. He has amazing lecture slides, and interactive lectures, and he's always willing to stay after class and talk about anything. Definitely one of the best profs I've ever had. Lots of respect for this man. And if you try and care, you can and will do well in this class.
He has an amazing grasp of the details of almost any armed conflict, past or present. He opens class by asking students to bring up some conflict or other political issue, and then analyzes it for the students in minute detail. Incredible! I don't always follow the news, but with Klaus, I didn't have to! Easily one of the smartest profs at UVic!
Klaus made me fall in love with philosophy! His lectures are inspired, and these plus the slides help make the reading super clear. Tests were always fair, and I feel like I really learned the philosophy in writing the essays. Hands down my favourite prof this year, and I will be taking more courses with Klaus in the future. Fantastic professor!
He's such a funny and cute prof. Super understanding and goes out of his way to help you
Klaus is the most dedicated, approachable and entertaining prof. if you are deciding between him and another prof for a course, pick him. He is extremely well versed in all topics he covers in his courses, and will go out of his way to help anyone who asks. The only mild annoyance about his classes would be the number of girls crushing on him xD
Kalus is talked up but is actually just a pompous ass. You write three papers the entire year and if you aren't apart of the "philosophy posse" he idolizes than you can pretty much accept 70%'s. I went to every help session, always was involved and could never scrape higher than a B and I'm a high A student in all my other classes.
Klaus is super funny and approachable. I really enjoyed the first 20 minutes of every class that we spent talking about current events. When we were actually discussing the class material it was alright, but Klaus loved to take questions and go on tangents for up to half the class. 2 papers, and a take-home final that was essentially a paper.
I've taken two courses with Klaus (Intro and War) and he is fantastic! He is a tough grader, but if you really work hard, you can get an A in his classes. He is super approachable outside of class, and is always willing to help make your papers stronger. Definitely worth it, just for the lectures alone. Hilarious!
On assignments, Klaus has a very generous comment-no comment policy. The extra week was a godsend! Even on no comment essays, though, Klaus always offerd an explanation of what went right and what went wrong on the essay. He's a tough grader, but fair. Agree with others here that the lectures are amazing. Super respectful of student ideas!
Klaus is a good professor, but he's so overrated. He moves at such a low pace; he did not even cover two of the assigned chapters. He is a terribly tough grader. I do not regret taking his class, but I will not take him again. He is knowledgeable but an okay professor at best.
Klaus is a really great prof. He's always open to talk and start group discussions. However, the course material in 235 was kind of boring.
He does make you work hard for your grade, but if you put in the effort (hint go see him in office hours), you can actually do pretty good in his classes. He is also an excellent lecturer, with a vast knowledge of the area. He was pretty much able to answer any question asked, and he always showed respect when dealing with students questions.
I find Klauses lectures to be amazing! He is super funny in class and obviously very excited by philosophy and that makes it interesting even though the class is in the late afternoon. I had no idea what to expect from philosophy class, but I know that I will be taking more classes with Klaus.
He made me realize my passion. Funny. Caring. Best professor Ive ever had.
Klaus is a solid professor, definitely the most entertaining I've had so far. He always answers questions in a respectful manner, and makes topics interesting. Grading can be tough but shouldn't be an issue If you've done your reading. Lectures aren't mandatory but I would recommend going, slides are posted online but it really makes a difference.
Klaus is a Kant genius. Knows the Critique back to front, relates it to predecessors and successers, and to the rest of Kant's work. Excellent lectures and detailed lecture notes. If you're a serious student of philosophy, you need to take this class with Klaus. Highly recommend!
Killing in War was by far the best class I have taken in 4 yrs at UVic. Close reading of a really dense technical work of philosophy, with excellent lectures and detailed slides. Klaus has an amazing ability to connect with students, and incorporate them in class discussion. 3 hr class never got boring because of Klaus. Overall excellent prof!
Klaus was such a nice prof. I felt like he genuinely cared about all his students, and loves and is passionate about what he does. I don't necessarily think the class was easy, but if you actually do the really long and boring readings you will probably do really well. He made an effort to make lectures funny and interesting.
Great lectures. Boy does he know his Kant. Took 235 with him too, and found that his answers in lecture should be a bit more succinct. Doesn't matter though, he broke my mind this term. Took forever to get grades back on homework though. Super hard content, great to have such an engaged, kind, and knowledgeable prof for such a foundational class.
Klaus is extremely knowledgable and it's obvious he cares about his students. He takes the time to answer everyone's questions in detail, providing entertaining anecdotes. I would 100% take another course with him.
Klaus is the kind of guy you'd like to have a beer with, unless you're not willing to get into a discussion about why domestic beer is better than import.
The course I took with him was PHIL236. The class was Social and Political Thought. He is much too politically biased in his teaching (Quite left wing in this case). He is a good teacher besides that, but if you want to avoid leftist bias in your profs, don't take his classes.
Klaus uses A LOT of humour in class to illustrate the philosophy and he makes fun of both liberal (Trudeau) and conservatives (Trump). If we're talking about government failing the general will (Rousseau) Klaus will point to Trump's failure to his taxes etc. Can't get much clearer than that, and hilarious!
As a conservative student, I can still appreciate Klaus's humour in lecture. It's a three hour long class and that is what makes it bearable. I would definitely take more classes with him, but sadly he's leaving Victoria to go to Australia. Hope he keeps making jokes there!
I honestly cannot say enough good things about Klaus. He is brilliant, hilarious, and extremely passionate. I'm so sad he's moving to Australia and legit considering moving just to take more classes with him lol. Very respectful of students and wants you to succeed. He's a fair marker but definitely makes you work for it. Best prof ever.
Incredible. My friends and I almost cried when the course was over. He's passionate, humble, dedicated and inspirational. Tests were always the same format, easy to study for. He's a tough marker (I did better in my 2nd year PHIL232 class), but if you put in the effort, participate and engage, you'll do great. Please don't leave for Australia :(
Klaus is a great guy, super kind and funny. He makes class interesting but his papers can be difficult.
Witty, engaging lectures. Very accessible outside of class, and always willing to have a discussion. An incredibly encouraging and kind person. Really one of the best profs you'll ever have. Australia will be lucky to have Klaus Jahn!
Klaus was a good prof but the lectures got a bit repetitive and boring. He took attendance randomly throughout the year and so while to get a good grade attendance isn't mandatory, it does effect your grade.
Klaus is an amazing professor and guy. He's passionate, super knowledgable, dedicated, and truly cares about his students. Lectures are engaging, funny, open to questions, and full of stories. He stayed late after class for some inspiring and thought-provoking discussions. I'm sad to see him go :( Australia, you're gaining a phenomenal prof!
Klaus is by far the best teach I've had at uni. Would 100% recommend any of his classes - not the easiest in the world but super interesting, and his delivery is really engaging.
I am a CS major. I was looking for first year electives when I stumbled upon PHIL 100, offered by Klaus. He was FANTASTIC! Ended up with a B+ in that course and decided to take PHIL 235 with Klaus again! Loved it! Always available in his office to go in deep discussions with you! Super helpful! Philosophy is not my major but Klaus is my fav prof!
He was one of my first professors at uvic and this course was very wholesome. I was really anxious about this course but was so aspired to do it so I reached out to him beforehand and he was so kind. I really like the purpose of phil 220 death and dying, the intro to his class was already eye opening and continued on. Great course, great professor!
