Very very intelligent Professor. Stresses that his student do NOT use calculator for graduate entrance exams. Hes classes are prepared and structured to make you Ace your entrance exams Eg MCAT.
He is a very fair and intelligent professor. He also is very humorous while lecturing and is happy to assist his students if they are struggling. He makes the class challenging but not impossible. Everything is geared towards the final so study all semester.
Very good professor. He is always willing to help you at any place and time. All assignments are geared towards the final so make sure if you don't understand something go to his office during his office hours. He has a way of explaining things so that they are clear and simple.
Great teacher!
Sit in front of the class or you will not hear him- has a strong accent. He's a really nice guy, and grades super easy on projects and essays. Although, his tests will kick your butt if you don't take down every note in class. Don't miss class either; he shows powerpoints every day with fill in the blanks on his slides that he does with the class.
Horrible teacher! he would post up previews that we would have to study before class because as soon as we walk into the door we had a quiz on it. So you basically learn on your own. He will set up one or two problems that we would have to work on the whole class period and he just puts number up, no explanations sometimes. do not recommend at all
I wouldnt recommend him to anyone who needs a good grade the only way to get above a C in the class is to go to his office hours 3 days a week He has willingly admitted that he doesn't teach he just "facilitates our learning" which means giving us practice problems and expecting us to know how to do it then laughing at you when you don't.
If you get assigned in his class, do yourself a favor and immediately switch out. He always throws curveballs and trick questions in his quizzes that are nowhere to be found in the previews that we MUST read prior to class and that is the main reason why people end up failing his class anyway. Claimed that his final was easy; NOT TRUE AT ALL.
Klaus is a good guy, but the material is extremely tough with very little taught in lectures. It's like you're teaching yourself with the textbook. Might as well just watch YouTube videos for free rather than pay to take this class.
He provides the information for you to be successful in the class. First day he said he doesn't lecture because he knows it is boring. I like that because I would rather practice the hard problems in class when he is there than teaching us the easy stuff and assigning the hard problems when we are home. Not an easy class but he is a good professor.
Dr. Mortensen is one of the best professors at GCU! To be successful, you must understand the concepts in the before-class previews! There are quizzes everyday on this material. Physics is a make or break class! It is hard! Dr. Mortensen encourages students to study 3 hours out of class for every hour in class. Dedicated to his students!!
Does not work out problems. The class is taught with power points that you have to read on your own. It is a self taught class pretty much.
He is not a bad teacher, the class is just difficult. The class is set up so all the material is taught through powerpoints outside of class. He wants you to come to class with questions after learning the material on your own. If you want to do well you will have to put in the work.
I have two problems with Klaus. First, his teaching style consists of assigning a 30-65 slide PowerPoint and having you teach yourself. It doesn't take a doctorate to see how that wouldn't work. Secondly, he gives off the vibe that he does not care whether you pass, fail, learn, or succeed in his class.
My grades usually range from A's and sometimes high B's. I would not recommend this teacher! He gives us powerpoints to learn on our own, he doesn't show that he cares if we pass or not, and he's not approachable to ask for help. One time I was shy as is to ask for help but he laughed a little because he said it was so easy, like really?
I loved this class. I had never taken physics in high school, so everything was brand new for me. Due to the way the curriculum is structured, there is a lot of learning and teaching yourself the material outside of class. However, Mortensen was always willing to provide assistance when it was needed. He is hilarious, and tries to make class fun!
Nice guy, but you might as well just watch YouTube videos instead of waste your time by showing up to class.
Made attendance mandatory. Very confusing lectures. Only went over example problems. Expects you to read and understand the material before coming to class. Only covers the hardest examples. Don't wait until the last minute to do the Expert TA homework! Study the practice midterm and practice final! They will save you!
I really hated this class. You teach yourself, and any questions that are asked are answered in a very vague manner. He refers to asking for help as a "crutch" and believes that the best way to learn physics is to teach yourself all the content and work overly complicated problems in your groups, with very little assistance. Don't take his class.
This class was ridiculous. No matter how much you study for the weekly quizzes (for which you teach yourself), you're almost guaranteed to do poorly because every other question is written as a trick. Not very helpful in office hours either. Expects you to learn everything on your own.
People who trash Dr. Mortensen on here do so because they did not put the proper effort in the class. With genuine attempts to understand the material outside of class with the resources provided and putting forth the effort in class, it is easy to get an A.
Dr. Mortensen is a good professor. He is a genius, in my opinion. The class is just hard itself and the curriculum is a little too much. You've got to REALLY work for it in order to get a good grade in this class, but it's doable. He is extremely helpful, just go to his office hours. Spending hours in there saved my life.
The class is hard if you do not have the gift of Physics, but he is extremely helpful. I went to him for each of my worksheets and he helped me fix my mistakes before I turned them in and genuinely helped me learn. Would recommend.
Very hard class. At GCU, concepts are learned by yourself. Then very complex problems are solved in class. He is helpful if asked, but it feels pointless going to class at times as I felt lost a lot of the times.
He's nice, but I just don't get the way this class is taught. You're basically teaching yourself the bulk of the material, with little covered in class. I was in his office every morning for a solid two months to get my A. Tutoring is a must if you aren't naturally good at physics (like me). Also, the final is worth 290 points, so beware.
Klaus is a good guy and is nice but his class is terrible. The class is "blended" so all the learning is at home and class is for questions and then you take a quiz. The homework is difficult because if you don't know a question, your notes will only help for half of it and sometimes the TAs don't even know how to answer it. Blended classes suck.
Klaus is a really nice guy. The structure of this class is just awful, though. You learn at home, and then apply it in class. The questions on the tests require many different factors leaving you confused. The final is unnecessarily heavily weighted; 30% of your grade and is hard. He will kinda help if asked. Get a tutor, good luck.
Dr. Mortensen is extremely nice and professional. His teaching style is different, but I found it personally helpful. Instead of learning material in class, you learn from powerpoints at home, then discuss and apply the material in class. There are weekly quizzes that force you to study daily on your own. This helped me to avoid procrastinating.
Its a tough subject but he does a great job at simplifying things and explaining them. If you ever don't understand something ASK! He will go over things in class or at his office hours.
The professor is great, helps students all he can, and explains things very well. A very very good professor to have for Physics. However, if you are taking Physics-111 you MUST read the PowerPoints beforehand, and you MUST watch the youtube links they come with. Be prepared coming to class or you will struggle!!
Klaus is a nice guy but the structure of this class is horrible especially with the biggest portion of the quiz grade being the first day of the week with the expectation that you will be able to completely understand the concepts. Was laughed at for asking a question in class and I really don't think he cares if you pass or not. Barely holding on to a decent grade while studying 18 hours a week for one class is pretty bad... do yourself a favor and get another professor
Dr. Mortensen is a great teacher, the class itself is just difficult. Dr. Mortensen is always willing to help and is kind, it is up to you whether you want to work for a good grade. It all depends on how you learn, he is very logical and likes explaining certain concepts with equations. If you are good at logical reasoning then take him.
Dr. Mortensen is a really cool guy. He's funny and helpful in office hours. He sort of gets a bad rep for the structure of the class, which is bad, but he's a really good professor. There's two quizzes every week so be prepared. There's also a final worth 29% of your grade so do your best to maintain the material throughout the semester. Take him.
This class was the toughest in my degree program. Dr. Mortensen structures the class based on a "modeling" method, which allows students to practice the concepts in class. Sure, his teaching in unconventional, but physics is crazy stuff! He is ALWAYS in his office for office hours. Super approachable and kind. He really wants you to pass! :)
Great professor! Come to class prepared and it'll become easier. He explains concepts well and is very funny. One of the best physics professors at GCU.
Dr. M is great! He really cares about his students and if you go to his office hours he will help you! He will sit down with you and help you through all of the weekly assignments and is very clear in answering questions. Sometimes trick questions seem unfair, but he always has a good reason and his students are better for it.
Dr. Mortensen is great, I had him twice. Physics is tough at GCU, it moves very fast and the final is heavily weighted. However, Dr. Mortensen is really helpful in office hours and wants everyone to do well. He's pretty funny so class time is enjoyable. You have to work really hard in physics. I was in his office 2-3 days a week for my A.
Mortensen is an awesome teacher. He is very standard in explaining things. I took him for both physics 1 and 2 and he was awesome. The final is alot of points so study study study for it. Mortensen is a good teacher, and caring as well. He lays the cirriculum flat and well.
Klaus is by far the BEST physics teacher at GCU. He is the head of the department and if you want to pass physics (which is already hard on its own) make sure you have a good teacher. The only other great physics teacher is Andrea Strock. Klaus is VERY smart. You have to show up to class at least 2 times a week because there are quizzes.
Lots of office hours which are amazing to get extra help. Replies very fast to email too. Physics itself is super hard and the final being so much of your grade is terrifying. Even with an A in the class I was beyond nervous taking the final. However, he really does do everything he can to make sure his students are prepared.
Klaus is a good teacher. He really is knowledgeable on the material and is definitely willing to help you outside of class. However, the class is very fast paced, and you are taking a quiz every other day so some of the concepts are brushed over quickly. He can go pretty fast in class, so make sure you are alert, and don't take the class at 7:00 am
11/10, would take again. Mortenson gave me extension upon extension for all of my homework assignments that were already prolonged due to me being enrolled in Student Disabilities. He helped me so much with this class even though my mental health went completely south and I could barely leave bed some day. Seriously do whatever you can to get him
Klaus is the man. He spends most of his time teaching bio majors who need physics for the MCAT, so he's used to making things understandable for those of us who suck at it. He's fun, he's always willing to help you work your way to the right answer, and he's very good about office hours so you can always find him if you need it. Would highly rec!
Mortensen is such a stand-up professor. Sure the class is hard, it's physics! But he really knows how to teach well. You need to come prepared everyday to class, otherwise you will be totally lost. He is always in his office helping students out. Really nice professor, and wants the best for his students!
Mortensen's teaching style is very clear and organized. I've had other instructors in lab and lecture for other physics classes and no one makes sense like he does. Physics itself is hard but he tells you exactly what you need to know for the quizzes and midterm.
Teaches a reversed class where you do PowerPoint homework prior to class so that you are refreshing and polishing your knowledge in class. If you do the work, he will help you to understand the material. It also helps that he is patient and helps the dumbest of students (me) so long as you are willing to work at it.
Mortensen is a cool professor. He is easy to talk to if you need help and gives lectures that are actually helpful for completing the homework and participation.
He teaches a topic that is rather tough but then again I'm not exactly bright. If it wasn't for him I probably would have failed this class but I went to his office hours at least once a week and he spent extra time helping me ensuring that I knew the material very well! Its tough but he puts in the effort that you put in towards your own success.
Lots of out of class work with minimal in class practice opportunities. Good professor but definitely a lot of work on your own.
Klaus is a great, caring professor! The structure of the class can be frustrating at times since a lot of the learning is at home, but the people who complain about this need to realize that that's exactly how college works. The only difference is that he sort of pushes you to this. If it wasn't for him, I'd be struggling a lot more.
Very unorganized class, professor didn't always know what to teach. Doesn't relate to science at all, more of a basic class for high school level kids. Lots of group projects that are all due at similar times. Only a few big assignments that apply to the grade. Quizzes don't match material in class.
Good and funny guy, but if you want to teach yourself the whole semester this class is perfect! The lectures are pointless and only the questions asked via powerpoint are talked about in class. Instead of the traditional teaching, it's a lazy way to teach the material in a horrible manner, with a concept quiz to start every week.
Professor Mortensen is a great professor who truly makes an effort to help his students. During the shutdown of campus due to COVID19, prof went the extra mile to have time available for his students, make lecture videos although it was not within his comfort zone and so much more! The class content itself is hard but just dedicate yourself!
Absolutely love Klaus! Very approachable and understanding when it comes to talking to him. Of course the class is set up in a way to learn independently but he's always attentive to answer questions.
I was excited to take this class... BUT, Mortensen is the toughest professor I have ever had. You can tell he knows his stuff however, he relies on third party instruction, videos, hmwk, and testing. I spent 7-15 hours per day trying to do the assignments. Never got feedback, or understood what he was looking for. Overall, I'm disappointed.
He is a great professor and had him online. He posted many videos so that students can go back and review the material. Helped with finals and midterm as well. This is a great class if you have time to study and show up to class. It is not mandatory but helps with important assignments throughout the semester in class.
Phy111 is a lot of work but Klaus is great! The layout of this class is very different but once you get used to it it's not too bad. He is a fast grader and is very helpful when you reach out for help. His lectures are helpful and he is a funny guy. I feel like a lot of students on here are taking out their hate for the class on Klaus.
I enjoyed the professor as he was very witty and helped if I had any questions. Was very straightforward.
He makes a lot of jokes & often uses examples in order for students to better understand the homework. However, all the notes are given to u a week before lec & u have to give yourself the lecture. It is helpful when you need to look at it again for the heavy exam but for me, I had a hard time learning in this manner. He is a cool professor though.
Klaus is a great professor, he is funny and genuinely cares to see his students succeed. If you go to his office hours he is more than willing to stay as long as you need to help make sure you understand what is going on. Inspiring guy as well
Professor Klaus is a nice guy, but his teaching style wasn't something I could click with. His class is based heavily on you learning important material independently, which made concepts confusing. Quizzes are given EVERY lecture and they can either make or break your grade. A lot of busywork is assigned; NOT ideal if you have more than 4 classes.
I think that he was super funny, but his teaching style was very confusing. He assumes that you know the equations and doesnt give much explanation for how to do different types of problems.
I am not a huge fan of Mortensen. He is a bit condescending and makes the material so much harder to understand. If you can take someone else, I would recommend it because his teaching style isn't very good.
I seriously do not recommend taking Mortensen unless you are very good at physics. His lecture style is just not beneficial and I do not think he prepares you for the final at all. If there is an option to take someone else, I would do it because I feel like he makes physics so much harder than it needs to be.
He does not teach you are expected to know everything before class and is reliant on outside sources like videos. If i wanted to teach myself, I would have taken an online class. Makes everything a lot harder than it is and assumes that we know everything. Gave no instruction about the final which was quite difficult. HORRIBLE WAY OF TEACHING.
Dr. Mortensen is funny, sarcastic, and always willing to help you out (especially during office hours). The physics team all follow the same teaching style. It is not my favorite, but having Dr. Mortensen made it a lot manageable. He does not want you to lose easy points, so it is important that you speak with him if you have any questions.
I love this man. If you are struggling in this class, go to his office hours and keep going. He goes above and beyond, staying late to help his students and teaching a concept until there is a decent understanding. Expect him to be a little feisty at times. His sense of humor can be taken the wrong way, but its all in good nature.
Professor Klaus is the most wonderful professor you will meet at this school. He is so willing to sacrifice his own time to ensure the success of his students. He welcomes questions, and his office hours are incredibly helpful. His lectures are clear and organized. Its easy to tell that he truly enjoys his job.
Klaus was a great professor. Thought he was pretty funny, very sarcastic cause that is his sense of humor, definitely don't take it the wrong way. Super helpful during office hours and takes time to explain things in a simplified way.
Dr.Mortensen is an amazing professor he tells funny stories and jokes in class and explains the material in a way everyone can understand. The class is hard and takes a lot of work but he makes it a little better. Some of his jokes may not be funny to some so be prepared for that. If you want a professor you will learn something from pick Dr.M!
I would definitely recommend him! The course itself is daunting because there is a quiz every class period but he will answer whatever questions you have and responds quickly outside of class. The final is cumulative but Mortensen provides resources to practice for it. He's funny and doesn't just read off slides so that's a plus.
If you want to do well, just do the work. Klaus is available outside of class and extremely helpful. Attend class because of assessments. I like the flipped classroom style because we can do harder material in class. Study and you will be fine. Easier than chem 113 by 100%
Dr. Mortensen is a great prof. Some may not like his way of teaching physics and that's ok but he will try his best to make sure someone understands the problem which includes his insane availability outside of class at pretty much anytime. The class itself needs a lot of work put into it because there are quizzes and homework every week.
He was amazing! He takes the time to make sure you understand the material!
Everybody will talk about how nice he is, and I certainly agree. What I was also impressed by was how intelligent and innovative this man is. The way he tries to teach is potentially groundbreaking. If you utilize the way he teaches properly, you will have the time of your life in this class.
Please take Professor Klaus. He has to be one of the most genuine professors I've had at the school. He will go out of his way to make the physics interesting and all of this is backed by his great sense of humor. Grades are put in quick, his office hours are awesome, just everything about Professor Klaus has been such a good experience.
Dr Mortensen is amazing he is very kind and cares a lot about his students, he wants you to succeed and is very willing to help. He gives amazing lectures and demonstrates the concepts in lectures, he explains the content very clearly and makes a difficult class interesting and manageable.
He is AMAZING professor ! I would take his class again. Go to his office hour often.
His class has a different setup than normal lecture classes. You go through the slides on your own time and then submit questions, he answers the questions and spends the rest of the class applying what the lecture was about by solving physics problems. Every other week is a heavy grading week. He is such a fun person and loves to tell jokes.
I highly recommend this professor. His lectures are engaging; he's always making jokes and entertaining the students. He does have multiple quizzes in class every week, but they aren't too difficult. He explains concepts well and does example problems in class, which was really helpful for me.
Klaus is very sweet and tries to be very engaging in "lectures", this course runs as a flipped classroom and he does his best to answer all questions and make the class interesting with demonstrations. He is always available to help answer additional questions and makes the exams for the course so he prepares you very well for them!
Great teacher, he was always funny in class and is there to help you. You have to be prepared to learn a lot on your own but he is there to help. I recommend attending office hours and asking for help. Every class has quizzes but they are not that hard. Attendance is mandatory.
Took Klaus for PHY111L and let me just say you will never do anything right. You will get points off the lab reports for the most absurd things. He says that no one will ever get a 100% on a lab report. When you ask for help he is SO degrading, so if you care about your grade, find a different lab professor.
Professor Mortensen is amazing! the lectures are often lengthy and every class has a small quiz, but he provides help for the quizzes. There are multiple homework assignments (lengthy) and dq posts over content every week. Mortensen made lectures entertaining and easy to understand. My favorite professor yet at GCU.
I took Klaus for both PHY111 and PHY111L, and I loved him! You are guaranteed to do well in the lab if you show up, and have him check your labs before you submit them. You will also do well in lectures if you prepare before class. I liked him so much that I am taking him for PHY112. He is the head of the physics department, so he makes the exams
Klaus is one of my favorite professors that I've taken a course with. His course requires you to do a large chunk of learning outside of class but he solidifies that with multiple examples of the content in class. Klaus makes learning physics interesting and explains in ways that make sense, especially if it's your first time with this subject.
He was a good professor BUT Andra Strock??? she was AMAZING! I went to her office hours more than Klaus because she would explain it so much better than Klaus. I would definitely recommend Strock over Klaus. She really saved my grade and cared more for me than Klaus. Yes his dad jokes are funny but help is more preferred than personality.
Professor Mortensen is an excellent professor with high expertise in this subject. His class does involve alot of outside work, including going through powerpoints and watching videos BEFORE class but you will get used to it. PAs long as you do well on the midterm and final, you will easily pass the class.
He is very specific about what he looks for in lab assignments but also helpful. He can review them before turning them in and his feedback is helpful. Do the work and show up! He's also a funny guy and makes any lecture engaging and entertaining.
Klaus is a tough grader at times but his feedback and office hours are helpful. Sometimes he may be direct and straightforward but still overall a good teacher with good tips and advice.
Gets confused and forgets things he agreed to do 4u. Horrible grader/doesn't allow retakes. Great at first, but as class went on, he got awful. Very argumentative ab anything and everything, especially when he's in the wrong. If ur not a girl who borderline flirts w him, he won't care ab you. loves talking ab himself and won't ask questions ab you
Honestly great professor but if you aren't understanding something you have to go to office hours bc he'll explain it completely differently there. Works hard to always be there for students. He cares about student success to the point he holds office hours 4 times a week for summer semester when he isn't mandated to hold any by the school.
Had him for lab and lecture, and he was a cool professor. His grading was great, his lectures are understandable, and the pacing is great for both lab and lecture. His lab final is based off of everything we learned the whole semester, making it easy to prepare for TAKE NOTES IN LAB. Taking notes in the lab helps, even if it seems easy.
Klaus is very knowledgeable and helpful during lab. However he is a very tough grader and will take points off for every little detail.
Mortensen talks with a heavy accent so sometimes it is very hard to understand what he is saying. He goes over three problems of the slides in class and everything else you have to teach yourself. Grades very strictly and will take points off for every little thing. He told us before a test that if we decide to start crying we might as well leave.
