Prof. Klyne Smith was a really cool dude. The class is breezy - it's only 8 weeks with an essay assignment due every week. You're graded more on "did you understand it?" than "did you follow format?" - which I love. The prof. has had a bunch of awesome experiences in the field, and it makes for great lectures. Left a great first impression on us.
He is the best professor I have ever had. He genuinely cares about his students and wants them to succeed. He is willing to get out of his way to make sure his students reach their goal. His lectures are extremely interesting and informative that you will never zone out! I have had a great experience with Mr. Smith. Awesome professor!
Prof. Smith is very down to Earth and has A LOT of experience in the Computer Science / Software Engineering field. His class isn't difficult but it does get you thinking. He wants his students to succeed so he encourages them to think out of the box and actively engage with the class. He deserves a gold medal for the best professor in the world!
awesome professor an easy A
He is honestly the best professor I've had this semester. He truly wants us to succeed and is there to help us when we ask for it.
Professor Smith is a great teacher and furthermore, he is very knowledgeable in the field of CS. Show up, turn in homework on time, and study for tests the night before and you are guaranteed an A .
Best professor ever. Class is very easy. Do hw and do ur exam you'll pass. Hes chill and funny, trust me. Class is fun so its ur loss for skipping. Class passes by quick. He is very knowledgeable. He has alot of experience in cs. Add him on linkedin.
Professor Smith is an incredible professor. Not only does he lecture well, but his advice over industry practices is something some teachers simply cannot provide. The discussions in class were always fun as well.
Absolutely hilarious and makes a special effort to connect with his students. Just do what is expected of you and get an A+.
Dr. Smith is one of the best professors I've met. He is someone who truly cares about his students and loves to talk to them. He is very inspirational and gives some of the best advice for a number of things that will have an impact on your future. Attend his classes, talk to him and meet him during his office hours.
Great professor, both inside and outside of class. Willing to help in any way possible to better your future.
There is no words you can describe him. He is one of the best professor. He is very inspired and truly care on his students. He want you come to class to learn how to be successful in your career. His homework and quizzes are easy. You dont need to worry about his exams since it took only 10% and based on what you learned and heard in class
One of the only class in which I interacted with the professor so much. Has immense experience in Project Management and passes all the knowledge to the students. Caring and hilarious. Used to look forward to all the lectures. You can also talk to him for any interview help. The only downside is that the professor doesn't like to be challenged.
A god among men, If you have the honor to snag a spot in his classes before they fill up TAKE IT. He will be the biggest impact on you outlook of college. The one class I wanted to keep going to. He has real relatable knowledge, unlike some proffs that have been on the out of the field for a while. His lectures are enjoyable, and he cares.
He used to be way more helpful. Not sure what happened to him this semester. He gives hard projects and expects us to be full-blown project managers. He doesn't understand that we have other technical classes that need time too. I'm graduating this semester so thank God I don't have to deal with him ever again phew
If you see him available, you better register for him. He's such a laid-back professor and if you have any issues or food recommendation, he will be open-minded to talk about it. Classes goes by really fast when you're in his class because of how hilarious he is. Better take him!
He gives ridiculous group assignments then changes the deliverables last minute without changing the deadline. His requirements and ethics classes were fun and easy. This one however, is hell. AVOID AT ALL COSTS
Just take him. He's a great guy who's funny, cares about you doing well both during college and after, and is always showing you various opportunities to expand. For example, he's very insistent that everyone apply for internships (it's even an assignment) and tries really hard to make you more confident in yourself. Take him and get a mentor.
He is an incredible professor, especially for project management. He has a lot of practical experience from the industry, and he does his best to impart that knowledge to his students. The projects can be a bit vague in terms of grading criteria, but he will clarify any doubts you may have. He is very engaging and cares a lot about what he teaches.
He's great and inspirational with a lot of experience (and he's funny). Perfect start into the CS and SE world.
I would always walk out of class excited about CS. He has a lot of experience in the industry, and he gives lots of good advice about internships/careers. Pay attention & ask questions, because you'll learn a lot. When it comes to exams, he cares about application, not if you've memorized the textbook. Overall, a fun guy & great professor.
This professor is by far one of the greatest professors at UTD. Gives feedback and points back for improved projects. He really cares about his students and will bend over backwards if it means his students will get an A. He's sweet, funny, and a reasonable professor. Truly a gem and gift to the UTD CS department. Take him if you can!!
Tests were pretty annoying memorization fests, but Dr. Smith is very lenient on grading (curves, extra credit, giving points back). Overall, he made Software Engineering more enjoyable.
Great professor. His personality makes attending class fun. Textbook never used and majority of learning comes through projects. Class has 8 group project assignments. Project requirements often not explained well, so attending class is a must to understand what he wants from projects. If you get to know him, you can use him as a resume reference.
Dr. Smith is great- he teaches with the goal of helping you in the workplace as opposed to teaching dry academic theories from a book. He is passionate about his job and it comes through in his lectures. You will do a group project management assignment that lasts the entire semester that gives you practical experience. I highly recommend him.
This professor is very military unfriendly. He did never work to accommodate the military students situation during the pandemic COVID-19. The students who got deploy miss grade and got lower GPA.
I loved attending lectures as Smith is inspired to teach and is a great speaker. You'll rarely not laugh once at one of his stories in class. With that said, the semester project does make you put in effort with a group. His exams are also no joke either. He is very practical and can work with you if you communicate with him.
Was in his first online class. We didn't pick him, he swapped with another professor, but he apparently hated our class (not our fault man). Had us write papers on outdated stuff that he never taught. Basically just gave slides and old Youtube videos. Fair grader, it seems you're better off in his in person class
If you have the opportunity to take a class with Dr. Smith, take it. He is an engaging and caring professor. Whether it be with your career or the coursework, he is always willing to help and push you further. He provided valuable insight into how companies gauge requirements from a business practice point of view.
He is, by far, the best professor I have had at UTD. He has industry experience in requirements engineering and project management, and brings it into the classroom. He is such a warm and caring person, and his lectures are very engaging. Group projects are a bit of work but reasonable. His tests are very open-ended. He is an easy recommendation.
You're missing out on major guidance and inspiration if you don't take him. Take him at least ONCE for SOMETHING in your CS/SE years at UTD. Ans CS 1200 with him is an easy A, and the best time to get a great dose of that major guidance and inspiration. You won't regret it!
Has one semester project. 2 tests, 7 quizzes, 4 homework's. This course was the best course I've ever taken at UTD. He doesn't curve but will give go back and give extra points on assignments if you feel like you deserved more pts. Dr. Smith is still one of the best SE professor's there. If you can, take his course. You will learn a lot from it.
Weekly quizzes, and about 5 papers. They are all very reasonable. I enjoyed his lectures especially. He will interject life advice and stories about his own career experience. Overall, a fun class and an excellent professor.
Dr. Smith is an amazing professor. He seems like he genuinely cares about his students and he is a great resource for internship and career advice. His 1200 class is super easy but also very inspiring; he completely motivated me to apply to summer internships. Hes a great public speaker too. Just make sure you arent on phones/laptops during class
Highly recommend, 1 of the best! He emphasizes real world application(useful, inspiring, & interesting). Hilarious stories & great explanations. Willing to give everyone A's if you put in the work(not bad at all). Only complaint I've heard is that he calls on people during class but that's rare & he's nice. Look at these reviews, he's that good.
Dr. Smith is a great professor and definitely the person to go to if you want advice for internships. He is clearly very knowledgeable in his field which was honestly a little intimidating, but a good thing. The CS 1200 projects can be a little advanced at times for freshmen who may not know a lot about computer science yet but are totally doable.
Fantastic professor. I've taken him before, and it is always a joy to take one of his classes. He is extremely nice and funny during class. His lectures are pretty interesting and I never feel bored listening to him. Take him if you have the chance.
Dr. Smith is nice and interesting. I enjoyed the topic, even if the class was just a requirement. He mandated a lot of reading from the textbook, A Gift of Fire, but the it was a surprisingly interesting choice. There was a bit of writing, but not much: a few assignments, one to three pages, double spaced. A good experience overall.
Entertaining lectures. Worth it for the easy A. Fair warning: if you like doing assignments ahead of time, this class will frustrate you. The prof constantly changes the expectations of the assignments during lectures. On the upside, expect extended deadlines.
This was my 2nd time taking professor Smith, he is a great lecturer. Course material is well tailored so you can have a good understanding of project management. He gives good feedback on assignments as well. Quizzes were not too hard as long as you paid attention & skimmed chapters in the book. Put in effort and you can make a decent grade!
Best professor EVER! He is just a good human being, loves giving tough love. He is a great mentor and I owe him changing my life to the better. I took him for 3 classes, all A's, HIGHLY recommend him!!!
Dr. Smith is hilarious, knowledgable, and easy going. The class consisted of a semester-long group project, a couple homework assignments, chapter quizzes, a midterm, and a final. The course is definitely more work than CS1200, so make sure to be thorough in ALL your work. Besides that, enjoy his amazing lectures and have fun!
I had strange experience in his class. We were in a mixed calls of graduate, undergraduate, online and distance education students. First it felt all well but later in the class I realized that he picked his favorites and made up his mind about others (All 4 of my group members shared the same experience).
Very confusing guideline for a semester-long group projects, but easy quizzes, homeworks, and tests. You will probably get an A if you go to class and listen. BUT the professor constantly mocks students in the most unfunny way. Like I'm here to learn. I'm not here to act like your jokes are funny. Just act like he's funny and you'll get an A.
Some of y'all reviewing him have negative sense of humor! The Dr. is funny, he's outgoing, takes time to get the whole class engaged, he offers a great introduction to UTD. Infectiously positive and will teach you some things about life. He has fun with the class and you should too.
The most unprofessional and flippant professor of all time. Jokes aren't funny, and sometimes disrespectful. Doesn't teach. Grading is whack. I'm an A grade student in all my classes except this one because he's just that impossible. Don't take this class. You're better off studying project management in a course from PMI.
I had a really good experience for the most part with Dr. Smith. His lectures were funny, and he was a personable and down-to-earth guy. Huge jokester too. However, his grading requirements are all over the place and very unclear. I've received low grades on assignments I did a lot for (and followed the rubric). Overall would recommend though
Tough Grader, lots of time-consuming homework
Took SMU CS Project Management class in the summer term. To do well on the quizzes, search Youtube for lectures on the relevant chapters (posted by other teachers) to reinforce concepts. Also, I would suggest getting experience with Microsoft Project prior to the class so you understand how it works in managing budgets and employees.
Honestly over-hyped, within the first few weeks of class you already have a test, group project and essay due. Unclear guidelines and changes stuff last minute. Very overwhelming class even though it shouldn't be (he tries to make the class harder for some reason). Probably shouldn't take him if you have anxiety b/c he randomly calls on people.
I feel like the professor downgraded from when I took him from Project Management. He doesn't cover the project as thoroughly as he used to and now assigns homework which are essays instead of the chapter quizzes. He's still the same personality wise and a nice guy but sometimes might get on your nerves.
Arbitrary grading and lack of clear instructions. Very condescending, you will lose points for answering a question exactly as it's presented to you. Physical roll call every day with maybe 20 min of lecture. Project groups are assigned and receive different grades even though groups answer the same way. The same arbitrary grading goes for tests.
Lectures are a huge waste of time and he will call on you if he sees you looking down at your laptop for any reason. You can't avoid it either because he takes physical roll call. Extremely unpredictable and will add new things to do in assignments last minute. He might seem nice at first but is extremely rude in emails and gets on your nerves irl.
I'm in both of his classes this semester and it's very obvious which one (SE4381) is the favorite. I would be fine with paying to listen to this guy's useless stories in lecture if his classes was super easy and attendance wasn't mandatory, but unfortunately that's not the case and Smith wants to make the classes more stressful for no reason.
I literally dread going to lectures, they're such a huge waste of time and you'll get called on if you're not paying attention. He spends the majority of time talking about random stuff and maybe the last 10min he'll go over course content. He changes project guidelines last min and takes off pts for small nit picky things. Would never take again.
I wish there was a better option. He's very insensitive and tries to embarrass students in front of the class. I've personally stopped showing up due to the cold calling. If you're the type of person to not give a class your complete attention you will get called on. Project guidelines is constantly changing and grade feels like a coinflip.
Prof Smith actually cares about his students and tells us to discuss career and academic goals in class. Some assignments were a bit tricky but he goes over them in class and is available for help outside of class. His class made me appreciate how detailed and involved project management can be. Definitely recommend!
Dr. Smith doesn't carry himself as a professional in front of his students. Around 75% of the class he spends it talking about his personal experiences in a very unprofessional tone, more like a buddy-to-buddy tone. He is rude when students ask questions in person and emails, and he will make you feel dumb in front of the class.
I was unlucky with my group, so I had a different experience. He likes being admired and tells you things to make you think he's sophisticated He's jovial and stuff, but can be ruthless and cruel sometimes Should be able to get an easy A if you are the type to climb ladders (and use AI tools).
I should've taken Paulk, this class was unnecessarily more annoying than it should've been. Definitely felt like Smith made the work tedious to feel like "a 4000 level class" (I swear I was gonna lose it every time I saw him say this on a test question). This was basically a glorified business class but Smith just made it extremely frustrating.
SO nit picky, it was insane what kind of points he would take off for assignments. Smith was ironically an ex. of what NOT to do for requirements cause he had the most unclear instructions ever. He comes to lectures basically winging what he's gonna "teach" that day. He doesn't even know his own deadlines!! He wastes so much time, just avoid him.
Smith was a pretty cool teacher. Other then most of his lectures was more of his personal experiences rather than him teaching, I actually prefer that. Whenever he taught the notes from the slides, it really bore me. Otherwise, his class is project heavy. Just hope you get a group that cares about their assignments and do work. With that, easy A.
Really cool prof and a big jokester. Wasn't a fan of him cold calling on students, but overall I enjoyed the class. Gave a lot of insight on the industry and has years of experience. Offers to help students outside of class and even after graduation in terms of jobs and advice. Project and tests are not hard. Homework's were just 4 short essays.
4 online exam open note. 4 hard project . 4 homework assignments. He picks on you if you are not paying attention
He's knowledgeable, but I wasn't a fan of the amount of group work for a five-week session. The course is mostly centered around a group project with randomly assigned teams. He can be picky about assignments, so be extremely detailed with your work. Also, be ready to be called on in class. Take in the fall/spring if possible.
Good guy. Funny. Knows his stuff. Grades well and is very cooperative. Fun class to take to if you wanna get an easy A
He will pick his favourite students from the class and would only grade them , you wont notice where did he cut down you marks , most of the point deduction would be unnecessary, just because of some incident in the class he would grade you less in every assignment. Definitely one should not take this Class.
He takes your points off because you did not write exactly what he said. He makes unnecessarily hard even the project itself is easy. one good thing is exam will be open book and open note. For the final exam he expect you to make project schedule with resources and all predecessors as well as dashboard all the slide within 2 hour that's not fair.
Coming to class is very fun and insightful since he is very knowledgeable and charismatic, and he knows how to give engaging lectures. Group project is time-consuming. Free-response exams are moderate difficulty if you go to class (you need to come in this class). He is a troll sometimes though, and he makes sure you are paying attention.
He's just a chill guy. Easy class with 8 quizzes and 8 homework assignments that make up 70% of your grade, no tests except midterm/final. Go to class to get attendance and you'll be fine.
He's is the most excellent (and funny) professor you'll ever have for this class (and probably more). He gives fantastic career and life advice that will prepare you for the competitive field of Computer Science. I always enjoyed his life stories when he connects parts of the required material! Homeworks, exams, and quizzes are straightforward!!
Dr. Smith is a great professor who has lots of experience in the field and offers great advice. It's clear he has a passion for computer science and he makes every lecture worthwhile.
Overall a pretty good professor, very knowledge, his lecture are the best I have ever had in UTD.
Smith is cool, this is a very easy class and he lowk sets people up for success with the assignments he gives. As a person he's a little difficult because his lectures consist of him talking about random things and randomly throwing in what we need for assignments. All you have to do is pay attention and you'll be fine for every HW/test.
hes pretty chill
Overall the class felt easy but tedious. We had 8 quizzes (open note + at home), 6 homework assignments, and a 3-part group project, but the professor didn't teach the basics needed to build the required app. Instead, he talked about his life and told us to find tutorials online, which felt absurd. Class content was mainly soft skills.
Good professor, easy class. As long as you put some effort you'll get an A. Lectures could be fun or boring depending on what type of person you are. Personally thought it was boring, but I did like him it was a simple easy class.
Great, funny, and very insightful professor. Always offered good advice, was a masterful storyteller, and a clear and fair grader. Would definitely recommend to anyone planning to take CS1200 or another course with him.
Professor had incredibly insightful lectures. Very easy to get an A in this class as long as you submit your homework and do the online quizzes (which don't take very long). We did have to learn to create wireframes and code sections of an app, but it was not too difficult and the skills we learned in the process are very useful. 10/10 recommend!
Amazing professor, lectures are very engaging so make sure to attend them. Grades are quizzes and hw assignments which are open book and are really easy.
He's a bit of a yapper but he does offer a lot of valuable information and is supportive if you want to do the work. very funny, and has a lot of experience to share with you.
See, the course itself wasn't bad. If I was rating the course itself, I would've given a much higher rating. The problem was the Group Project we were given. The course covers absolutely no coding work, and he'll send you into creating a mobile app with no prep/help from him. As a person, hes alright. Just asks way too much out of college freshman.
In my opinion the best CS1200 prof there is. He teaches super practical advice for SWE/Interviews/Internships, and he's ridiculously funny. His life advice is incredible. Just be prepared to work on the group projects, and make sure you are paying attention in class. His lectures are awesome, and he makes the otherwise boring content engaging.
