He's a really cool professor and makes art really interesting. I recommend taking his classes!
Awesome guy.. very funny and good lecturer. He obviously knows his stuff very well so he keeps class very interesting. He also has some awesome insights.
The class is really interesting. Kolya teaches in an informal way. He's very funny and open to hearing anyone's ideas. I recommend his class. It's one of the best I've taken at Cascadia.
Kolya is an awesome teacher. I feel like I learned a lot about art, but didn't have to do a lot of busywork. He's very straightforward and funny. It's a pretty easy class but still extremely well taught and interesting.
Kolya is an awesome teacher. I learned a lot about art & didn't have 2 do heavy work at all. He's straightforward w/ a funny scence of humor. It's a pretty easy class BUT still extremely well taught & very interesting(informal teaching keeps me interested all the time). I recommend his class. It's the best class & teacher I've ever had @ Cascadia!
Kolya is the best teacher I've had at Cascadia. He makes all the art we talk about interesting, w/ great insight behind the meaning/inspiration of the work. He challanges us 2 think & makes learning fun. He has a great sence of humor and is just a really nice, funny, and entertaining guy. I'd recommend him to ANYONE! Best teacher ever!
He's the best teacher I've had at Cascadia. Totally interesting insights and ideas, and he's funny. I recommend anyone take his class!
Kolya is the best teacher at Cascadia hands down. He is very interesting and fun. Attendance is necessary to get a good grade but as long as you take good notes you will do well. Test are open note so write down everything. He tells you what could be on the quiz and what wont. We didn't use the book at all. Awesome teacher.
Absolutely enjoyed the class. The teacher is great. He really enjoys the subject and it's contagious. The class is not one of the hardest, but to get a good grade you should attend, participate and take notes (you'll need them for the quizzes)
Great teacher, I always wanted to go to his class. He got the whole class into really interesting discussions where almost everyone was engaged.
I entered the class having absolutely no knowledge of drawing. Kolya was very patient, helpful, and understanding as I struggled along. He fostered an environment that challenged each individual student, regardless of their artistic background. He has a great sense of humor and is an all-around nice guy.
He's one of the best teachers at Cascadia, hands down. He loves what he teaches and it shows. He's super helpful and understanding. If you put in the effort, you'll get a good grade. I would definitely recommend him!
GREAT TEACHER! i have been drawing for years before i came to his class, and only took it for fun, not realizing that it was a beginners class. regardless, i still learned a lot. he helps you out consistently, and according to your own level of skill/talent e.t.c. you progress whether you are a beginner or not
He is a super awesome and fun teacher! I took his art class and he loves what he does and is super exciting and helpful! Take all his classes :D
This is the best class I've ever taken at Cascadia. Nuff said!
He's the best professor I have ever had so far. The way he is explain the topics are hilarious plus let us work in groups all the time. He really knows his stuff and gives you helpful feedback. I wish all professors were like him. Really enjoyed his class.
He's the best professor I've ever had. The class was so interesting and covered so many topics. It's not just about art at all. It's about history, what people believed way back, how they thought about gender. And he's really funny.
I love Kolya! Quizzes are open-note and are only based on lectures, so if you write down everything you'll do fine ;) There are also short (2-3 page) papers due every other week that are super easy because you have your notes and all info you need is covered in his lectures. He has a great sense of humor too! We didn't really use the textbook..
Kolya is a great professor. He makes the class interesting every day. Like others have said, it about way more than art--it's like history that's actually interesting. Philosophy, religion, politics, intrigue. It's a really engaging class. I'm going to take another art history class from him, even though art isn't my major at all. O
Fantastic instructor. Takes complex subject matter and presents it in a very well thought out and easily understandable way. he really makes you have a desire to learn, and that's the best thing a teacher could do. not "easy" necessarily, he just teaches it so well that it's hard to not learn, as long as you show up and take notes.
Amazing teacher. Really made you think in depth about the message and meaning of the art you were looking at, not just the picture itself. You really get a good understanding of history in general, which you can then apply to other classes. He's hilarious and knows how to engage his students in his lectures. Open note quizzes, so take good notes.
Awesome class. I didn't expect to be all that interested in art, but he made it really interesting. I learned a ton about things I have never learned in school. Very cool.
Professor Kolya is one of the professors that I will DEFINITELY recommend to others. I am a STEM major. However, his art history class is REALLY interesting. His way of teaching is very suitable for all kinds of students. Besides, we found him to be really easygoing and humorous. Great class and Awesome professor!
Kolya is an amazing teacher who makes learning fun and memorable. He really knows his stuff and is willing to go above and beyond to make sure you are understanding what he wants you to learn.
Awesome class. You'll learn a ton and have fun doing it! Kolya is hilarious, inspirational and really cares about you. He'll actually taylors parts of the class to subjects students express interest in. The class is about art, but you learn so much more about how visual representation works, history, philosophy, etc.
Was great teacher
Great class. I'd really like to give him a present ;)
Great class. I'd like to give him a present ;)
Koyla brings art history into the present with relevant and relatable lectures, everyday language and a causal friendly and relaxed lecture style. I have learned a lot about art history, art and the cultures and eras they come from without feeling overwhelmed with material or work. Great balance and clear quick communication if you need help!
He is an amazing teacher. Very funny, kind, and engaging. We used the textbook a lot, it especially came in handy on the quizzes. Study for the quizzes, they are tough!
He really adapts to the class, helping them along, assisting weak areas to make them better. Firm, but understanding and patient. He makes it clear what he expects and will help you get there. He doesn't have quizzes with random stuff you /never/ talked about he's very clear. Open note quizzes, so just take good notes and you can do really well.
I took him for drawing and Art history. HE IS AMAZING! Super understanding and reasonable guy, always willing to help students. Would definitely recommend this class to someone looking for a well-worth course.
If you are good at note taking, you gucci. This is not the right class for u if you suck at note taking. The Hardest class Ive ever taken!!!!
Very good class. Not that hard. All tests are open note.
One of the best teachers Ive had at the school. Funny and makes art interesting.
Excellent teacher! Really kind and gives great feedback. Really enjoyed the content of the course, he has very clear expectations. If you put in the work you'll do well! Best professor Ive had at Cascadia.
Great teacher. you should take him. I took his online art history class and it was one of my favorites. you will have a lot of readings and homework, but if you work on them you will get an A. the lectures are not boring and his discussion topic are good.
Kolya is an awesome teacher. He really cares that you do well and will help you if you're struggling. The class is SO interesting. Its about art, but also about history, religions, philosophy--everything that was important to people when the art was made. I loved it!!!
When taking this class, I found myself confused about whether this was an art or english class. He requires you to write weekly 2-3 page essays and the quizzes are 4-5 page essays and about every other week. This class is much too demanding for an art class.
Unlike the last reviewer, I didn't think Art 100 was super hard. First, it's not an "art" class--it's about how visual language works and the history of art-- is really interesting! There are essays (it's an online course so you have to do some writing, right?) but they're really pretty easy. I really liked the class and Kolya grades leniently!
I really enjoyed the class. Online lectures can get boring, but his weren't at all. There wasn't a ton of busywork--all of the assignments were pretty straight forward and had clear expectations. I spent on average about 6 hours a week total on this class, and loved every minute of it.
Art Appreciation was really interesting! Kolya gives an intro to analyzing art, and then gives lectures on the history of art from ancient to modern. There's weekly writing and online discussions, but they about interesting topics and not too much work.
Intro to drawing was a fun class. Kolya is very supportive, even if you're not very good (like me!)
If you love writing then take it; If not, don't take, there are more essays than my Eng 101 and 102 classes. He is not an easy grader so if you want a 4.0 you have to write perfectly. GOOD LUCK!
Art Appreciation is a very interesting class, and yes it has a good bit of writing--but the writing is really easy and Kolya grades totally fair. II got a "A" spending 4 hours a week, total. The people who are whining about the work are probably running start students who don't know you actually have to do some work to become a stronger student.
I never took Art History before, so I was surprised how interesting it is to learn about history through visual art. It's a class that's about a little bit of everything: religion, philosophy, politics, aesthetic theory. It's really well organized and not very difficult. I spent about 4 hours a week total, between lectures, readings and homework.
Really interesting class. There's some writing just about every week, but it's not busy work and it's pretty easy. Kolya will work with you if you need it, and I did. He's a really good teacher.
Great teacher. The lectures online are interesting. He gives you a fair amount of work, but if you keep up with it it's easy enough to get a high score. If you get behind, he'll work with you to get you back on track (but he has high expectations about you taking responsibility for doing good work and will hold you to them). I really learned a lot.
Unlike some online classes, you have to put in effort in Kolyas class to get a 4.0. He responds very fast, is very understanding and caring! One discussion forum a week and one 2-3 page essay as well. He has two quizzes which consist of three essays and 5 definitions. Soooo time consuming. I dreaded them. If you enjoy art, this is the man for u
I dont recommend this class... but I strongly dont recommend this teacher. Ive done 30 credits so far and this is the one class that I felt miserable in.
Really great teacher. The class isn't an easy "A" but you really learn a lot, and Kolya really goes the extra mile to help you. I go behind one time and he helped me get back on track. I especially enjoyed the lectures after the first two weeks on Egyptian art and Greek art.
If you really want to learn about art then this professor is the best! I mean it, he is so knowledgeable and understanding. Due to COVID he let some assignments to be extra credit. Do yourself a favor and take his class if you are serious about learning about art. I would recommend him 100%
Awesome class! I learned so much about art. He's a really interesting lecturer who teaches Art There are comments here that say the class is hard, but I think he must've decided to make there be less writing now because there were only a few papers. The quizzes just asked for you to summarize ideas in the lectures and he gave us 7 days to do them.
Great teacher. you should take him. I took his online art history class first and it was one of my favorites, so I took Art Appreciation. He's lessened the amount of work, You will still have a decent amount of homework, but if you work on it you will get an A. the lectures are very interesting and his discussion topics are good.
You get a decent amount of work, but as long as you put in the effort he's awesome. His lectures are to the point and simple. He gave me extensions on assignments when I asked, and when I turned stuff in a couple hours or a day late, he wouldn't dock points. He's great, def recommend him for the drawing class
I absolutely loved my class with Prof. Rice. He is very nice and understanding and will most likely pass you with an A if you put a little bit of effort. There will be two quizzes that I would compare to a midterm and a final which are semi-heavy, but you can definitely do it! The best class of the quarter.
Such an amazing professor! You wont get the credit if you dont actually take time out of your day and follow directions carefully. Try your best and youll get a good grade. Communication is great and he really cares! Such an interesting class, I learned an insane amount. Recommend him to anyone interested in drawing. Insightful class! Awesome.
Professor Rice is a pretty solid teacher. He provides detailed tutorials for assignments and gives you plenty of opportunities to ask for help. However, he expects A LOT from you in his Intro to Drawing class. Even with no prior drawing experience, I was expected to go above and beyond with my work. I worked VERY hard to earn the grade that I did.
This is such an excellent class if you like art! Kolya covers the basic ideas about how to analyze art in the first couple weeks and then gives you a bunch of lectures on the history of art--like on Stonehenge, the Pyramids, Greek art etc. Be prepared to do some basic writing to summarize the ideas he covers, but it's not difficult work!
I've taken a bunch of classes from Professor Rice and they are always really interesting and fun! He expects a lot but you always feel like he's teaching you a lot. There's no useless busy work. Also, he's really caring if you get behind he will help you like he did for me last quarter!
Coming from a Math Major, ART H 381 is easily among my best classes ever at UW, and Kolya was a huge part of it. Amazing lectures, knowledgeable, relatable, accommodating, funny, flexible, SUPER NICE, and CARING. Whatever your background, take this class; you'll love it. Prof. Kolya really just changed how I look at art in museums forever.
There are 2-3 page papers and a discussion board most weeks, but about a fourth of the weeks the paper is extra credit. His lectures are tough to chew through since they're slow and don't have captions. I got through them by watching at 1.5-2x speed. They're interesting though and it's clear he's passionate. If you're an artist, take the class.
On a usual week, he would assign one essay and one discussion board post, that's it and some weeks the essay is optional. Super easy class and fun if you enjoy learning about art. The two quizzes were the most time-consuming but if you start early, then it'll be fine. Easy grader and lenient on late work but his lectures are slow.
Kolya is amazing! I took the Art 121 class with no drawing experience at all and was able to draw a self-portrait in pencil by the end of the quarter! Kolya is a great professor, accessible outside of class, and cares for all his students. Don't hesitate to take his classes, I had so much fun and would recommend it to everybody.
The best professor for Art, I really enjoyed his class this summer, we have a weekly discussion and essay every other week. He is very passionate to teaching art and he is an easy grader and be ready to read tons of articles and listen to long lectures.
Koyla is a great professor and very passionate about art history, which helped make the online course/lectures engaging and fun. Super easy class except for two quizzes which are easy if you take notes. Overall, 10/10 recommend it, Koyla really changed my perspective on art.
This professor was great and made art history, which I expected to be boring, fun and interesting. he shows serious interest in everything he teaches
Professor seems to be really interested in teaching and had a lot of lecture videos to watch and many chapters to read each week. The assignments were light and he often makes the essays extra credit. A discussion and essay each week with 2 quizzes throughout the quarter. Not a hard grader if you do decent work that follows the guidelines.
He cared about each individual student and gave supportive and really helpful feedback. The assignments were clear and they were fun to do, and I learned a lot about drawing from this course. I would definitely take his class again.
Great professor, fast email replies and great feedback
Absolutely one of the most inspiring professors I've ever had and so caring towards his students. He truly made me want to strive to do better even when I had one of the worst years of my life. He had such an impact on my view towards education and made me feel seen. If you're gonna take and art class take it with him, 10/10
Professor Kolya Rice is very invested and knowledgeable when it comes to art history and techniques. There is an expensive textbook for this class. Lectures are long and assignments are mostly essays analyzing art pieces. Would highly recommend taking in-person over online.
Overall, not a bad professor but if you are taking this as an elective class, don't. He expects things to be done in order and has to have a specific amount of detail needed. If you are not great at art, do not take this class. It takes up time as well and it feels like you can't catch a break in this class with all the assignments.
one word: terrible would not recommend if you want your work to be called basic every single week there are many essays be prepared.
soooo many essays! very tough grader and his feedback says you didn't do enough... of what?? at least he offers help.
I am laughing at the latest posts because I'm in the same course. You would not believe how bad some of the discussion posts are, like people didn't even bother to watch the lecture and then whine about how hard the class is. The class has easy, informal writing and is pretty average difficulty for a college course. Welcome to college!
He cared about each individual student and gave supportive and really helpful feedback. The assignments were clear and basically asked you to summarize the main ideas in the video lectures. I learned a lot about art from this course. I would definitely take his class again.
Kolya is clearly really interested in teaching about art and had a lot of lecture videos to watch. The assignments were light and he often makes the essays extra credit. A discussion each week, 3 essays and 3 quizzes throughout the quarter. Not a hard grader if you do decent work that follows the guidelines.
At first, I wasn't super happy with how the class worked but after I adjusted I realized this was a great class to get you out of your comfort zone calmly, and he gives clear feedback on papers so you can get a better grade next time as long as you listen. He enjoys the topics and offers in-depth lectures. Challenging at times but good.
I really struggled with this class, I would spend hours upon hours studying and taking notes but, felt extremely lost. The lectures have absolutely no direction, and are hard to follow. I would never touch a class with this professor again.
Excellent online class. Really clear lectures and grading criteria, and if you get stuck or need help he's right there going the extra mile. He's also a very lenient grader.
I've taken 3 courses from Kolya. He's an amazing teacher. He works at the UW Seattle so you're basically getting that standard when you take his courses. He is a great lecturer and is very helpful if you need it. There's some writing, but he's pretty lenient with his grading and gives really good feedback.
Lots of reading on art, discussion posts, and papers every week.
Assigns a lot of work, takes points off, and doesn't give much reasoning or feedback.
I loved this class. Kolya's lectures are really interesting. The homework was reasonable and I got very good feedback. there are 2 informal papers and 2 quizzes. There are also easy discussions every week. Overall, I highly recommend this class to anyone who likes art or history.
He is a great Professor an makes things really clear. The class is hard and there is a good amount of work that needs to be done but totally manageable especially with his Steller and timely feedback so you know what to do better. Take his class.
Class was really educational and enjoyable! He gives consistent homework, but is an easy grader as long as you show that you are trying. Quick feedback and timely grades. Makes learning techniques quite interesting!
Is there long lectures every week? Yes. Are they intriguing and fun if you watch on 2X speed, also yes. I LOVED this class, the only one that I actually looked forward to every week. Honestly I'd retake it even though I don't need the credit, and it's solely because Professor Kolya is such a great guy. He gives good feedback&plenty of extra credit!
I took College 101 (not available as an option here) and it was incredibly easy. A fair amount of assignments but they were all quite simple and he was open to extending deadlines and accepting late work.
