Textbook not required but would use. Attendance is not required either but clicker questions are a part of your grade. Doing them in class is recommended. Good teacher!
dr kona is very good professor. He has usefull handout for each chapter and lecture video. He cares for his students. This is the first time I took chem 2045 with him and I will take chem 2046 with him. Recommend for everybody.
good lecturer with a sense of humor
He definitely knows a lot about the subject he is teaching and tries to get everyone to understand. He just goes very very quick in lectures and the classes is really only graded from a few homework assignments, peer led sessions and tests. It's an ok class but I wouldn't take him again.
I toom CHM 2045 and loved him! He posts lecture notes before and after classes. Attendance is not required but has clicker questions, which is preferable to do during the class as he explains questions. He posts practice questions, and before the exam, we always have a review that helps to prepare for the exam. Definitely recommend him!
Tests are worth 70% of your grade so if you dont do well on a test you essentially wont be able to recover from it. He doesn't curve the tests. He provides the powerpoint before class which is helpful but goes way too fast in class so dont attempt to take notes in class because he won't give you the time to get everything down.
I came into this class with almost no understanding of chemistry and Kona made it very easy to understand the concepts. He goes quickly in his lectures but if you just take the time to take notes ahead of time (which he posts) it's very manageable. Homework and exams are easy and there are lots of opportunities for extra credit.
Kona TEACHES. I feel like as a student who has been taking chemistry for the past 4 years, he has taught me the notes. The simplicity of his lectures, grading system, and notes on canvas and allowed me to succeed in his class.
I have never been this stressed about a class in my life. He does iClickers which do not help; his ppt slides are long; TAKE NOTES. He DOESNT give extra credit. He DOESNT care about your grade. He only reads off of the slide. No engagement in class. Exams are HARD if you do not spend at least a week studying ahead. PLS TAKE NOTES.
I really enjoyed taking his class! His lectures were very clear and he made sure everyone understood the material. He does go a bit fast but lectures are recorded, so you can go back and take notes later. Gives a lot of practice questions that help prepare for the exam. Highly recommend!
Everything is capped. You can miss 3 peer leading & get a 100. clicker questions, 20 points between each test & get a 100. weekly homework, you can miss 3 & get a 100. 3 exams capped as well if you miss 1 that's a 100. grading scale also curved A LOT, 70% is a B- just do the work, and you will succeed. They give a lot of practice, utilize them!
Professor Kona Senevirathne is one of the best professors USF. At first, I was afraid to take his class because I did not see any reviews, but once I took him I'm glad I did He is really helpful when it comes to understanding the assignments and lectures. he gives extra iclicker questions just so you can all have all the points. He is just Great.
Honestly a great professor. So many opportunities to get a good grade in this class. You can get the max amount of points just by participating. He's a great professor and will answer any of your questions. Honestly wants you to do well and will help you out if needed. Take this course with Kona!
I personally loved Professor Senevirathne! His lectures were easy to understand and he made it easy to follow along. Attendance is not mandatory, but I defiantly recommend going. Taking notes, doing the homework, and practice questions/tests will almost guarantee you a good grade in the class. I would take his class again for sure!!
Great professor who explains all topics in great detail. Lectures do move quick though. Very helpful outside of class during office hours. Without knowing any chemistry beforehand he helped me pass!
His lectures can be boring sometimes, but he did a pretty good job keeping me engaged for most of them as he is very funny and witty. Homework and clickers are almost guaranteed to be a 100 as he gives you many grace points. The exams are a heavy portion of the grade
His lectures can get really boring sometimes, but there is nothing to worry about for exams as lecture notes are more than enough for the exams. The exams are not very difficult as well; but, all the exams are very important. Clickers questions will be given in the class and are not difficult.
Professor Senevirathne was great for chemistry, he was straightforward and did not waste time during lectures. One of my favorite things was that we did a lot of practice questions during class which kept me engaged and allowed me to determine whether or not I actually understood the topics we were learning. Lots study materials given for exams.
Kona is a great caring professor. He loves to teach and likes to occasionally put jokes in the material. To excel in his class you should not skip any lecture, since in all of them a lot of material is covered. I believe that doing the homework and going to the peer-leading sessions is enough to get sufficient understanding to get an A in the class
He is really caring. He has an accent but it you get used to it quickly. He is more than happy to answer your questions and in fact is happy when he is asked questions. If you are having any issue you can talk to him and he will be the most understanding person. He teaches very well and has many resources. His lectures are easy to understand. 10/10
Great lectures, a great attitude loves teaching. Usually lets out of class a few minutes early depending on how fast we go through the material. Great sources, lots of practice problems and all lectures are posted and recorded. Must go to all lectures to get points for answering question on your phone (kind of like kahoot).
I dont normally post reviews but he's been such a great professor that I felt like I had to. He loves what he teaches and makes sure there is no confusion during class. He even makes helpful handouts that summarizes the lecture content to use as review. Tests are very similar to practice exams.
This is best orgo teacher at USF. silly guy who gives lots of extra credit and does test review sessions where he solves questions that are analogous to the ones on the tests. Hard to fail with so much extra credit, and gives easier tests compared to other profs. He emphasizes what you should know for a test in the lecture and barely uses iclicker.
Great professor. Makes taking a difficult class enjoyable.
Kona is very fair in his grading. A total of 100 points are graded for homework quizzes and iclickers, but over 100 are possible. TA discussions and lecture prepare you very well for the exams.
He is the science professor I have ever taken at USF! I took him both on chm 1 and 2, and planning to take him again in Orgo. He always does a review session before the exams. Class activity questions are similar to the actual exam problems. Gives lots of hints about the exam. It is really hard to fail his class. TAKE HIM!!!
Mr. Kona was really good in class and tries his best to make sure we understand the concepts. He is also available after the class is done for any help that a student wants and is also quick to respond to emails. Gives extra clicker points so that everyone gets over the clicker requirement. Lecture notes are enough for the exams.
This Professor is by far the best chemistry professor for chemistry. He makes the information so easy to digest. He also does exam review right before the exams that are very helpful because they are exactly like the test. It is honestly so hard to fail his class. All I do is study the exam review slides and pass each test with 90 or above.
Kona is a very good professor and everything he says just makes sense. Gives a lot of practice too which is important for a class like this. He gives you everything you need to succeed.
He is an amazing Orgo 2 teacher. There is no one else at USF who is as good as him. He is helpful, reasonable, not too much HW. Writes his own tests on things he actually taught you. The tests are fair. 40% of grade is clickers, HW, attendance. 85% is an A-. I urge you to take Orgo 2 with him only. I would take any class he taught. Trust me.
Part of a system for Chem 2 All the professors are given similar syllabi. Lectures are ppx slides which is not engaging for me, so I ended up teaching myself most the time. Very easy class personally. Tests have high weight, some reading assignments, and weekly quizzes as well contribute a small amount of points. Iclicker questions are extra credit
Kona is an amazing chem professor. His reviews are very helpful for exams and he is very thorough in explaining each chapter. The way grading works is that you can only go up with each exam and homework that you do. It is hard to fail this class.
He was genuinely the nicest professor I've ever had. He made the material easy enough to understand and only tested us on things that we had learnt. He also gave us a lot of extra credit and structured the class in a way that made it impossible to fail. As long as you go through his slides and exam reviews you should be able to do well.
Best Chemistry Professor I have ever had! 30 percent of the class grade is an easy A as homework and i clicker is capped and more points than needed is offered. The exams are fairly easy as long as you do the practice problems and exam revision question posted.
I loved having him as a prof. I'd say its easy to get an A in his class if you keep up with the lectures reasonably.
There's a reason he has a 5/5. The BEST chemistry professor you could get. If you think you might struggle in any kind of chemistry course, try to take Kona.
Awesome Prof. Very easy to get a good grade if you go to class and follow his lectures. If you miss class he sometimes posts recordings that are very helpful. Great guy.
Kona is great at teaching! He makes Chemistry so easy to understand. He really knows how to explain things properly. There are iClickers every class, but Kona tends to do less iClickers than other professors. Very accessible out of class and very caring! Truly a wonderful professor.
Kona is a very kind-hearted professor. He goes through materials again and again if anyone doesn't get anything. He is hilarious and often cracks jokes. His tests are average hard and he does give off extra credit (THOUGH HE SAYS HE WON'T). His slides are perfect to follow and uploads his lectures too! I'd recommend taking him.
Kona is a great professor! He makes the lectures very easy to understand and does many practice problems in class to help solidify your grasp of the content. He really wants us to succeed. You can get an A in this class as long as you look at the test review, practice exam, and weekly review sheets posted in the modules!
Would only recommend if you are already good in chemistry. He just reads off of the powerpoint and does no helpful reviews for exams. Extremely thick accent which makes it hard to understand. He is a good guy with clear passion for the subject but I would never ever want to take him again.
Your grade is essentially based off of 3 exams during the semester and the final. There are few weekly hw grades that barely change your grade. He has a pretty strong accent and goes fast. Attendance isnt mandatory, but theres in class i clickers for minor grade. He mostly goes over math portions of chem and not much theoretical thats on exams
Obviously organic chemistry is hard, the professor does not change that. Kona made the information organized in his lectures and gave us a lot of optional practice to do outside of class. If you do all the practice and study, you will be fine. He's nice, cares, and goes out of his way to give additional resources.
great prof, outlines the work in a clear way, offers more than enough iclicker points for attendance, and posts all of the lectures online. really cares about the success of the students. and he can be pretty funny sometimes
Dr Kona is a great professor. He has a little bit of a thick accent which can take some getting used too. He gives lots of extra credit opportunities and posts his lectures online. As long as you show up to class, and lightly study, I can almost guarantee you'll get an A.
He was such a great professor. I took him for chem 2 and orgo 1 and I believe I got good grades in those classes becasue of him. His lectures are very well detailed and easy to follow because he actually shows you how to do a problem. He is just a really good professor and I would definitely take him again.
Professor Kona is absolutely incredible!!! His teaching style would most likely work for anyone and he posts all his lectures online so u can review them at home. Textbook is NOT required, all you need to do is study the lectures intensely, do the weekly practice worksheets, learning obj worksheets, review questions, and you will get high A!
A very good teacher to study for General Chemistry. He explains the materials very well. His lecture notes (before & after class) are extremely useful. Attendance will definitely help you a lot, but in case you miss the class, he always has lecture recordings on Canvas.
One of the best professors. If you need to take chem please take him because he is able to simplify content so well and make students understand it. Class is very easy A if you put the effort, and honestly if you pay attention in class there is barley any effort needed outside of class to get a good grade.
Very easy class. You can listen and follow along at home after he posts the lecture. Focuses on math mostly but still very good. He does go somewhat fast but easy to catch up.
I love Professor Senevirathne because he explains the course material extremely well and provides before and after class powerpoints as study materials. There is a homework assignment due every week, lectures every class with iclicker questions, and only three tests throughout the semester.
First off, he IS NOT HARD TO UNDERSTAND, despite what a lot of people have been saying. His accent is not thick at all and just requires you to actually pay attention. He gives so many practice problems, worksheets, and reviews, not to mention the in-class clicker questions that also help. It's very hard to fail this class if you even try a little.
Kona is a great professor! He is willing to help students outside of class and he gives out a good amount of extra credit. He is very nice and his powerpoints were easy to understand, and fun. Would highly recommend.
The textbook is free, but you won't have to read it because his lectures focus on what's most important, and he provides LOTS of practice problems on Canvas as well as helpful YouTube videos. He records lectures but you should show up because the clickers are graded. However, EVERYTHING is capped, so you basically get free extra credit.
I love Kona's class. Chem II is more math heavy and he will not go over how to do anything before calculus level - students in chm2046 should know how to do it. His lectures are almost always recorded which is amazing because he runs through so many practice problems in class and his exams are just like the practices! gives notes pre-class!!
Lecture vids posted, but considering how hard chem is he teaches pretty well, the tests are usually hard no matter what, but I think he's pretty straightforward in the lectures, and the hw/iclicker points are easy A's in the gradebook. Just put effort into understanding the lectures and you should be set for the test. Memorization is important.
Sweetest man. Teaches chem so well, uploads his lecture videos, easy to prepare for tests as long as you do lots of practice problems.
Love love love this man. He has been miles better than my General Chemistry I professor and I feel genuinely comfortable with any concept that is thrown our way. He even highlights what material is high yield on the MCAT! Take Kona, you won't regret it.
LOVED Kona! He is so helpful and caring. He posts his lectures and recordings after class, however I recommend showing up as the material can get hard if you aren't in class.
Literally the best professor for gen chem 2. His powerpoints are amazing and he includes so many practice question for each concept. He does an in class review before every major exam that are really helpful and always posts and records all of his lectures. He will answer any questions you have and help you become successful. Take him if you can!!
Kona is a well-respected professor. His PowerPoint lectures are really easy to follow, however, going to class certainly is not always needed as the powerpoints tell you all you need to get an A+. So much extra credit and fair grading scale.
if I could buy this man an all inclusive, all expenses paid trip to the Bahamas, I would do it in a heartbeat.
Perfection. Actually, he's just perfection.
The class is PowerPoints. Clicker participation type grade. Great straight forward presentation of ideas, you know what's on the exam before you take it. Chem 1 is pretty easy, but he made it easier. Will boost your grade like crazy through a complicated point system, effectively like EC. Easy A as long as you attend some class and read the PPTs
The greatest professor I've ever had. Though Chemistry is anything but an easy subject. He made learning it a blast and was the sole reason I love the subject today.
The best professor for chemistry. It is easy to get an A as long as you put in some effort since there is so much extra credit built in. Although chemistry is not an easy class, he makes understanding the concepts easier. He records his lectures and posts them on canvas. I have absolutely no complains about him.
Great lectures that he uploads beforehand and the lecture after class. Offers extra credit built into tests and you only need to show up to class to reach the ickicker point requirement. Overall one of the best classes and processors I have ever taken.
Great professor. gives extra credit on tests. best chem prof by far. study the practice problems and you'll do great.
Great professor, his lectures are very clear and he provides you with all the resources you need. Exam reviews online. Lectures posted. Attendance isn't necessarily needed, it's counted under iclicker points but you could do those at home if you wanted.difficult topic but he explains things well and if you use the resources he gives you'll be fine
You literally can't fail the class
Very good lectures and great powerpoints. I think that the course material was very easy to understand with this method. Overall would take again. The course in general for all professors is mainly tests and it was a small amount homeworks and other assignments.
He is the best chem professor ever! His lectures are easy to follow and he makes chemistry a lot easier. Extra credit opportunities also! And SO much practice for exams that look exactly like the practice!
xxxxxxxxxx
Hey he helped me pass orgo 1 with a B. He takes a bit of warming up to, but after that he is manageable. Orgo 1 is hard in general but the fact that I passed with a solid B speaks volumes about him more than myself.
He was amazing, highly recommend him for chem. He is knowledgeable and can be funny. His lectures were useful. The class itself is difficult but that's any chem class. Study, do the homework, and you'll be good. I recommend taking notes on all lecture slides and doing the practice exams.
I actually loved his class so much!! He made chem 1 as a freshman exciting and straight forward. His in class reviews are super helpful and he even records his lectures. Favorite professor ever
professor senevirathne is amazing! his lectures are very clear and easy to understand. i never used the textbook once (even though it was free). all the lectures are recorded and posted on canvas. classes are not mandatory, you just need to attend a few to get the required number of clicker points. so glad to take his class again next sem!!
Dr. Senevirathne was fun. Getting used to his accent initially took time. A fun fact is he still remembers me even after two years and asks for my updates whenever he sees me. I just now got a chance to rate him. He's a kind gentleman who understands your problems and helps all the time. Though his exams are hard, taking lectures seriously helps.
He is very understanding and makes the class enjoyable. A little hard to understand at times, but overall a really great teacher for chem.
Clear expectations on how to succeed in the class. His accent is understandable but not American so beware if you struggle with accents. Homework was relatively easy and was available for multiple attempts. Be prepared for tests and study in order to get an A, doing decent on tests is essential to get a high grade.
Professor Kona is a great professor and truly wants his students to pass. He does sometimes go fast through the content, but records his lectures so you can go back to them. His tests also reflect off of the review and past exam so they are not too hard. Thank you professor Kona!
Explained topics in a manner where you could easily follow along. His slides are easy to understand and he provides step by step solutions for all math problems. He records lectures and posts them after class. He does have an accent, personally I never had any difficulties trying to understand him but keep that in mind if you plan on taking him.
Professor Kona is probably the best professor you will have for organic chemistry 2. He teaches from his slides very well so referring to the textbook will be a minimum. His exams are very similar to the practice exam and review sheets that he posts for us, so it gives you a very good idea. Every exam he gives extra credit, so you have more help.
Best professor for Orgo II. Extra review session for each exam. He always posted after-class lecture notes along with recorded lectures which helped a ton. He is clear with his expectation. Definitely take him for Orgo II if you want to learn and succeed.
took him for chem 1 and LOVED him so i took him for chem 2, and i'm 1000% planning to take him for orgo 2. posts lecture slides ahead of time, posts the annotated/filled out lecture slides from class as well as lecture recordings, and is a great teacher overall. does iclickers so u have to attend class, but provides more than needed to get 100%
Definitely take him! Very nice and provides so much practice. There are 3 exams, a final, and extra credit opportunities.
I never leave ratings for professors. EVER. However, Professor Seneviranthne changed that. He is absolutely incredibly, and you can tell he truly cares about the course and it's contents. He answers every single question asked, and is beyond respectful to every student (not to mention, incredibly funny as well.) He is amazing!
I cannot say enough good things about Kona. He is a phenomenal professor with the best lectures that really clarify material. He has in-class reviews for every exam and his chapter reviews are very helpful. Kona truly cares for all of his students and makes tough material manageable, while also bringing an enjoyable humor to class.
Very straight to the point and easy to understand lectures. Manageable point based homework and exams. Do the learning objectives and worked practices to do well on the exams.
Do the learning objectives, worked practices, and test reviews and you will do well on the tests. He also had an in class review before each test which was very helpful. Would definitely recommend taking him from Gen. Chem.
Loved him as a professor! The first 2 exams were fairly easy, however, the last two exams before the final were arguably harder and the way he tested them I felt were not in the best way, overall setting a lot of individuals up for failure. That said, he did provide a lot of extra credit which boosts grades!
Prof Senevirathne is goated and it's impossible to fail his class. i wish he was my professor for every single class.
Great professor and provides lots of extra credit, test reviews usually reflect what will be on the exam accurately!
Honestly do not have a single bad thing to say. Not only was this class super organized and generously graded, but gave me such a solid chemistry foundation. He is super accessible outside of class. The final was a bit difficult but there is lots of extra credit. If you put effort into this class there is no way you won't pass. Highly recommend!
Great professor. Our exams were much easier compared to my friends' who had different professors for the same class. He also gives a lot of extra credit to help boost your grade up. The only thing though is I wish he gave more resources to prepare for exams.
He's great, truly one of the best in the chemistry department. That doesn't make it an easy class, though. It's curved so that if you work hard you can do it, but you won't get that perfect A unless OChem is your obsession. Study hard and if you don't come to class you WILL fail. You don't have to ace every test though. Him over Bisht always.
I was super discouraged after having Pham for Chem 2, but Kona genuinely wants everyone to do well and will give you the tools to also do well. He won't move on from topic to topic unless the majority of the class understands the concept. Great guy! Pham was stingy with his notes, but Kona records all his lectures!
Slides are incredibly difficult and overwhelming to read and understand. Tests are above average difficulty and he does not give any helpful resources at all. He should really consider going back to teaching ONLY general chemistry, this guy is NOT at all a good teacher for orgo. Either find someone new to take his place, this teacher is horrendous
Show up to class for extra credit quizzes, do the HW and extra credit Wiley Plus assignments. He basically tells you questions he will put on the test.
great prof for orgo. offers a lot of extra credit, curves exams, hints what will be on exams, and provides recorded lectures and notes. as long as you practice the concepts, you'll do well
Took orgo 2 this semester and it went incredibly well with Dr. Senevirathne! While I would say this is the most challenging class I took, taking it with him is 100% worth it. He is an unbelievably good professor, and he gives a LOT of resources! DEFINITELY do all the textbook practice problems. Old exams and test review accurately reflect exams.
Taking orgo 2 with Dr. Senevirathne this semester really was a blessing. His PowerPoint slides are soo helpful, and he is always willing to answer questions. Old exams and test reviews are very similar to the exams. His extra credit is such a huge plus and really boosts up your grade! Do all the practice resources and use the textbook problems!
LOTS of extra credit. DO THE PROBLEM SETS AFTER EVERY LECTURE. If you actually study after every lecture you will get an A!!! Start memorizing reagants/rxns after each lecture because that is the hardest part of this class. 4 in person exams + mc cum. final that was 40% exactly Q's from his review and 20% from the textbook "ACS style questions".
The best guy around. After each lecture, look back at previous exams and answer questions based on the material you just learned until you understand. Also do practice problem sets. Will say during lecture and review if a question will be on the exam. SO much extra credit. So helpful and sweet. You won't find a better organic chemistry professor.
Best professor for organic chemistry! Helped me a lot in class and out of class. He is caring and gave us a lot of extra credit to help us with our grades. He is really there to help students! He might not do the clickers for your class, but he will do quizes for extra credit in class, so make sure you attend, they really help with learning!
I personally almost failed Orgo 1, then was able to get an A- this semester in Orgo 2. His exams are somewhat similar to the practice review questions, and all follow the same format. He lectures well and breaks down complex ideas easily. I honestly wouldn't take any other prof. He offers so much extra credit near the end of the semester (4.7%).
He's the absolute best STEM professor I've ever had! He provides so much practice and opportunities to boost your grade (almost 7.5% extra credit!) If you have the chance to take him for orgo, don't walk, RUN. I would take him again in a heartbeat. 10/10 recommend.
BEST PROFFESOR EVER! He's really sweet and caring, genuinely wishes for all his students to do well! He made a challenging class, very manageable! HIGHLY Reccomend!
My favorite professor have ever had! He is caring and wants his students to succeed in this course. Offers many EC opportunities including a curve on tests and EC chapter reviews. Weekly HW but its not too hard. Go to class/do reviews as he will sometimes give hints about what to specifically expect on a test. Would take him again in a heartbeat.
PLEASE TAKE HIM FOR ORGO 2! So nice and understanding, gave sm extra credit. Exams mirror the past exams/review, DO THE PRACTICE PROBLEM SETS!! Overall made the course much easier but you have to study in advance. I regret that I didn't take advantage of the resources he provides as it is super beneficial. Wants the best for his students.
