professor stone was not helpful at all and wasnt easily appraochable when a student needed help, i didnt feel comfortable asking her for help and rather struggle.
her exams, just like her mood is very unpredictable. making the course extremely challenging. somedays she is very willing to help, then there are days you wish you never approach her.
she is awful. she expects a lot out of us. she expects us to do the hw at the end of the chapters yet refuses to show us examples on how they are done. her lectures are convulted and a mess. approachable? no.
It's very hard to predict what will be on her tests, given all the random things in class. Class needs more structure. She is one of the few chem professors that cares about students learning tho she seems unapproachable at times.
Hard friggin class. Lucky i passed.
Definitely one of the wittiest professors. Great sense of humor and great sense of applying concepts to everyday life.
Not a very good teacher at all. She is very unhelpful. If you try to get help she is never at her office during office hours. She hasn't taken a bio class in years and has no clue where hormones come from. I personally had to teach her where TSH and LH came from. Take at a different school.
She is not that bad as some people say: yes, she is really hard, but what do you expect of such a high class? If one asks, she explains how to solve a problem, and, yes, she does not give an answer right away. She teaches the most imortant in this subject-- research, work hard and you will find...
I took her over the winter and got an A. I don't even like chemistry. She was really good and made learning chem fun as dumb as it may sound. She also grades really fair and easy. I enjoyed her and her class very much.
shes ok, sometimes she gets too crazy over lipids though.
As awsome as you can get for a Chem. class. Actually made it half way interresting.
not very helpful. lab was fun. difficult class. sometimes seemed to not know what she was doing. probably should take a remedial for this class.
Very confusing professor. She would work her way through a problem that she was trying to teach us and the realize she did it all wrong. I think she needs a refresher in Chem before she teaches again. Not helpful with any homework.
Stone is pretty lacking when it comes to lectures, but she's very helpful during office hours and she gives out candy
Her lectures always tended to take a u-turn or a diff route. She would totally go off the subject and talk about something that wasn't relevent. She expected students to kno everything WITHOUT teaching it first. And when asked to explain or teach..she would totally make u look like shyt-kinda funny.
Dr. Stone cares about her students. She will help you in any way she can.
Dr Stone is a pretty good teacher, although she would occassionally stray during lectures. My only complaint is that the final she gave had questions not covered in class. Other than that, she is a good professor and she did hand out candy!!
Great lady..a bit daffy .. but real easy class. Chem is my worst nightmare but she makes it easy.
She was an awesome teacher. Some times a little confusing, but if you actually try and do the prctice tests she puts on the net, you will do well. Her old tests are pretty much just like her new ones so look at the ones she puts up 4 u and if u don't your an idiot.
boring
A difficult class indeed. She is not much help when you ask for it. When she is working a problem out on the blackboard she commits many mistakes and students are always correcting her. How am I suppose to learn when she is doing the problems wrong. For anyone taking chemistry I would strongly recommend taking a different professor.
The first exam kicked my ass. She had things on it that were either not on the textbook or materials she has not taught. The class was more of an individual study because she expects you to learn the chapters prior class meetings. The class was not structured, it felt very messy.
If I had to pick between Stessman and Stone, I'd have to pick Stessman. If you can find a different teacher for this class, take that teacher and not Stone.
I agree with most of the previous postings. Dr. Stone is indeed unorganized when it comes to her lectures. On the other hand, she was a really interesting person. Although, I am a little concerned. It seems as if she has an eating disorder because she always talks about burning calories and other stuff of the sort. Who knows.
Great teacher. She was fairly easy as well. As long as you do and study the worksheets then you will do fine on the quizes. Great professor and class! I sure wasn't expecting an A in chem, but it happend =D!
This class was not as difficult as expected, especially for summer. Dr. Stone is a good instructor: witty, very reasonable with grading, and makes Chem interesting. Moves quickly over molecular equations, somewhat hard to follow. Good class activities. Quizzes and hwk are doable, final was not easy.
she is very unorganized, always late, and ALWAYS lectures over the time period to make up for it. that is annoying b/c she resents you for getting up to leave for the next class!!! and i would agree with previous comments where she expects you to know everything prior to lecture. she considers lecture just a discussion.
This professor is an emberrasement to the PhD. She has lost her passion to teach and she teaches college level students, like they were third graders. She never has a plan of action for her lectures, she makes her lectures as she goes and makes mistakes every single day. Why the heck did the school give her tenure, she dont deserve it.
Very boring and has yet to learn the organization skill. she is always late, very hard tests and unclear of what she is teaching. this lady is all over the place! hated this class
She treats students like they are stupid when they ask her a question.
She is a very hard professor...I recieved my first F EVER in this class. she never gives clear examples because she screws them up every time...SO TAKE NOTES IN PENCIL!!! She is surprisingly rude to her students as well. And her tests cover info not talked about in class! NO BUENO!
Horrible teacher. Very unorganized. No point in going to class cuz you wont learn anything. Snag some old exams and read the book to teach yourself the material. She considers group projects as a good way of teaching, then never reviews the material. Tests are hard and too long for the alloted time. Plus she is an idiot.
She is really not that bad compared to what others are saying. I'm not a studying type of person but I still got a B in the class. all the questions from the quizzes are on the tests and all the test questions are on the final.Almost word for word Just study the quizzes and practice the book questions and you will be fine.but she can be rude
She can be nice, but nice doesn't help you learn chemistry. I had her for lab and basically learned and did everything on my own. A lot of the time she wasn't even in the lab and she was hard to understand even when she was there.
HORRIBLE teacher! Group projects and presentations are basically how you learn in this class. Make sure to get a hold of the old exams, because that's where she pulls all her test questions from. Don't ask her questions because she has a tendency to make students feel stupid.
The only mandatory thing about attending class is getting notes. But lecture notes doesn't even begin until the middle of the semester! Biochemistry is interesting, but you're taught NOTHING! Sometimes she's even confused about what she teaches. AVOID enrolling unless you HAVE to take the course for graduate school/programs.
Where to start...Dr stone is the most unorganized person that I have ever met. Her office is such a mess she can't find your work or anything else. She likes to delete half the instructions for the labs, then leave and you have to figure everything out on your own or ask someone who has a different teacher to explain it to you. Horrible Teacher!
She's the worst chemistry teacher ever. she is so unorganized. Her grading scale is ridiculous. She gets mad at students for asking questions. She is not helpful at all.
GREAT PROFESSOR!!!
Dr Stone is an awesome teacher. She does a great job of making a difficult subject understandable. She keeps things interesting with classroom activities so lectures were never dull. Right off the bat she pointed out that she hates surprises and she sticks to it. Her exam questions come from exactly where she says they will.
Dr Stone is an great teacher. She does a great job of making a difficult subject understandable. She keeps things interesting with classroom activities. As others pointed out she can be condescending. Right off the bat she pointed out that she hates surprises and she sticks to it. Her exam questions come from exactly where she says they will.
This class was not as bad as people made it seem. Stone is a great teacher! You just need to attend class for her random worksheets which she uses to count attendance.
DO NOT TAKE DR. STONE! Be prepared to teach yourself. She makes frequent mistakes and becomes irritated when you ask any sort of question. If you're good at teaching yourself you should be fine. I'm minoring in chemistry and actually enjoy it but she makes me reconsider.
not consistent with her lectures and what is on the tests, she does give practice tests which are very close to the actual exams. Keep YOURSELF updated with her site because she does not tell you if she posts anything. There are in class assignments that are easy points. Final is cumulative from all previous exams.
Nice teacher. she is human so watch out for mistakes. study guides are you best friend in this class & your notes. even the littlest detail are important.
Probably failed the class. Hoping for a C. Her exam are pretty easy, but I still failed them because I didn't study like I thought I would. In total, 3 exams, and 1 comprehensive final. 90% of questions are from old exam, some are worded exactly the same. Final is 90% of Q are similar to the 3 exam taken during the semester. Extra credit available
I had Dr. Stone for CHEM 1 over the Summer and it went really well! Sure you have to teach yourself sometimes but her tests were very easy and straightforward. She also gave us practice exams that were the same as her tests, the only difference was the numbers were different. People don't give her enough credit! And she is really nice!
Amazing professor that cares about her students, does anything in her power to help you pass.
Shes pretty cool. I took gen chem 1 over the summer with her. She puts practice quizzes that are almost identical to her real quizzes. She is kind of confusing, but not too difficult. You definitely need to study and stay on top of things in class. I highly recommend taking her :)
Took Chem 1 over summer because I thought I would do good in the class since I have never done bad in any of my science classes, but I was so wrong. Basically she doesn't teach and she assumes that the students already know everything. The quizzes have 1 or 2 questions from the practice quiz and the rest is some random stuff that we "should know"
Took Chem over the summer and the class itself is not difficult, however Dr Stone should not be teaching. She is rude to just about everyone when you ask questions and you have to teach yourself the material. The worst part is that she has horrible communication skills and her mistakes often have negative effect on your grade. !DO NOT RECOMMEND!
Get ready for one of the hardest labs you will take at this campus. You need to read scientific papers to obtain your own procedure. These procedures will take longer to complete than the time given for the class. Be ready to figure out how to complete the lab analysis on your own.
She should not be teaching. End of story.
I really don't understand why so many people complain about her. I had her for chemistry and she was one of the easiest professors I have ever had. I am generally not good in sciences, but I am glad I took it with her. She explains everything and gives similar examples to work on that will be on the quizzes. All you have to do is practice.
Took her for chemistry 1100 and she was a great professor to be honest. She is pretty good at telling us what we will be tested on and she gives a lot of examples that are nearly identical to her tests. Would definitely recommend her if you want to pass chem.
I took Biochem 1 with Dr. Stone. She was very fair from the start. Everything that is on her notes WILL be on the exam. I never used the book once. As long as you keep up with the website assignments and do them correctly you will get B's or better on her exams. She also gives 50 EC points if you sign up and be a tutor.
Absolutely terrible.
She is the most frustrating, counterproductive and hostile professor I've ever experienced :( after lab I'd always leave confused and sad, because she'd never help me make sense of the labs. My semester was miserable because of her temperamental "teaching" style. She would raise her voice when I asked for help and would leave her office when I came
She uses the iclickers 24/7 during class and does not go over most of the answers. Does not teach at all in lecture, struggles to get the electronics to work which takes a lot of time. Very nice person, but a terrible Professor. Do not take her class!
We meet three times a week, 50 minutes a day. She spends 20 minutes a day trying to get her computer working and when she figures it out, she realizes her information is incorrect. She spends more time making the animations for her slides than actually teaching as she is supposed to do and what we are paying for.
Do not take this professor. She seems like a nice lady but not a very good teacher. Does not break down the material well. I would take a different chemistry teacher if you can. By far the worst teacher I have ever had.
Nice lady, but her teaching skills aren't the greatest. Many errors in her slides. She doesn't do a good job of explaining small details either. There is a lot of homework, sometimes 100+ questions a week. It was very repetitive and did not help much on the tests, just made me even more confused. Definitely made me feel stressed.
Do not take her class. She is awful
One of the worst professors that I've ever had. Her lectures are lacking in any material and she relies on you knowing the material yourself by just reading the book. It makes her lectures pointless and I learned most of the course through watching videos on YouTube. Avoid her completely.
She honestly is not how people say she is. Yes, you have to re-teach yourself the material but its chem! You cant expect to understand every lecture instantly. Like she says repetition is key to retention. Shes very understanding and helpful. If you have any questions, shes always willing to answer them for you and will do more if needed.
Took Dr. Stone last year for general chemistry 1, she was a solid lecturer and I did learn quite a bit. Somewhat hard to reach outside of class, but she does care a lot about her students. Tests seemed often harder than most other teachers since she expects a fair amount of memorization, definitely need the book. Not a class to fool around in.
I love Dr. Stone! She is very nice, has a good sense of humor, and really cares about her students. If you show up to class and complete/study the worksheets she gives, as well as do the practice tests she provides online, you will do fine.
I had her for CHEM II Lab. She was okay honestly. There were times where she wasn't really up to teach. I emailed her a few times and she wasn't able to answer me because she didn't have the information near her. During the quarantine, she did make helpful Zoom lectures about the labs. She also is a tough grader on labs, not a fan.
I took general chemistry one and I honestly had a hard time with this subject in HS but Professor Stone helped a lot and broke down concepts so that it is simple to understand. She is a lenient grader and you should do all the worksheets that she provides it helps with quizzes and the final. You won't regret taking it with Dr. Stone!
Her lecture's are never clear and is always contradicting what she is saying. She sets one set of expectations, states another and then grades the complete opposite. Never understand her grading, does not grade fast enough to know what you did wrong. Does not respond in a timely matter when extra support is needed.
This class was very hard, but she grades based more on homework, which is really helpful for those of us who need it that way. Her tests are all things she has gone over, so you can really trust what she's teaching. And she's like the Bob Ross (painter) of chemistry professors, very fun and easy to understand.
Dr. Stone makes mistakes in her lectures, gets mad for asking for help, not clear on her grading policy, and not sympathetic during covid. She seems like a good person but is a terrible professor. Do not take her.
Dr. Stone teaches like she assumes that you have a general background of the subject. A lot of her explanations are very vague. She makes up like 50% of her material as she lectures. She gives a very specific timeline, so read the textbook before class if possible. Sometimes she can be condescending when you ask a question or answer her incorrectly
Make sure you read the chapters before a lecture or else you will be confused the entire class period. There were quizzes EVERY week, and one comprehensive final at the end. I initially asked for help, but stopped when she showed irritation, lack of interest, and condescension later on. Otherwise, I enjoyed her humor and ethusiasm.
This proffessor is amazing if one is taking her as a summer course. During the summer she gives no homeowrk but hand out in class assignments. These assignmets are worth full points as long as you show up to class. The tests can be difficukt but going to SI helps a lot.
She is genuinely nice and if you ask for help she will explain things further to you. You're mostly on your own though, as she goes over the concept and some of the calculations, but you gotta follow the steps on Canvas alone. She isn't too harsh on the lab grades, but the exact grading criteria will be found on TurnItin. Must do ALL labs.
Purely unprofessional and does not evaluate her students performance. Goes over lecture very briefly as if you've learned it. I have taken AP Chem prior to this class but have to retake bc of CA med schools. She does not know how to go over the material effectively in my opinion. Exams are not reflective of lecture material. Avoid for your sanity.
If you want to fail a class, I highly recommend her. I took her course because she was the only option available. She teaches as if everyone already knows the material, moving quickly and leaving little room for questions. Her exams have an unreasonable number of questions for just 50 minutes, making it difficult to succeed. Failure is unenviable.
I unfortunately will have to retake chem 1 as many of the students in this class will also have to. 50 minutes to take a 40ish question exam where most are word problems and are worth 10 points each. Does not give points for an incorrect answer and shown work so you are at a loss already with probably a for sure D grade. No homework strictly exam
Many people are harsh on Professor Stone because they get bad grades, I'm here to tell you that some of the things people say about her are flat-out unnecessary. She does lecture fast, so start studying as you go, practice, go to tutoring, and review lectures it's a MUST, especially if this is the first time taking chemistry in a while.
Your grade relies heavily on tests and nothing else to back you up such as homework. She lectures quickly and is somewhat willing to answer questions but does not go into further detail. Resources she provides to supposedly help you aren't always related and you will find yourself having to learn many different concepts all at once
I think some people were a little harsh on their ratings for Dr. Stone. Chemistry is a difficult class in general so you can't just rely solely on the lecture because it won't be enough. I would try to attend the SI sessions they definitely help a lot, also do not put off studying till the last minute because it will cost you. Put in the time.
Chemistry is a hard subject overall but it's do-able. She's not terrible, she's kind, but I don't like the way she teaches. Lectures are fast paced & she doesn't explain concepts. Grade is based on 4 exams & 1 final. I had to teach myself most of the material. Get ready to spend lots of hours studying & reviewing lectures as the semester goes on.
Lectures were full of flaws as were the exams and in class worksheets. Lectures were never prepared beforehand. Grades were entirely dependent on exams and discussion attendance. Get ready to teach yourself
Anyone saying that the reviews are being harsh are just overachievers with no real understanding that other people struggle. Stone is a nice person but flawed instructor. She only reads off her slides which contain mistakes and offers no real support other than reluctantly answering questions in class. Avoid taking this class.
Dr. Stone is truly an amazing professor! The other people reviewing her have simply not done the adequate preparation needed for a General Chemistry course which is ~12 hours per week. Purely graded by tests and she pulls questions directly from practice exams and lectures. Final exam contains questions from the 4 exams given prior.
