If you need a Science with a Lab, take Astronomy. Lectures for a few then plays a video in class. Lab is based on attendence. Take him.
this guy is worthless. he lectures for maybe five minutes before putting in some stupid movies for the next hour. he's lazy, and then he goes and makes the tests way too hard for having not taught a damn thing.
Class was easy, lecture short, never have to show up and gives you an outline of what's on the test...EASY CLASS
Check this out. I showed up the 1st day, (Only day he calls roll). Then I showed up on test days, (It's on calander). He has sample tests online and the same questions on the sample is on the real test! ur gonna watch videos if u go2 class. EASY!
He is a nice guy. Don't just hate someone because you can't get an A. I'm international student, English is my second languge and I'm not smart. If his class is so hard...how come I pass with an A..?
Easy. Well for me anyway. 10-15 min lecture and a video. Takes attendance on first day only. Drops lowest test; all multiple choice. People who get 10s on tests=Dumbass. You should at least get a C slackers.
Dr. Stein is high value professor at GWC. He is intelligent, friendly, helpful and extremely nice. His scale in grading is merciful. He is always willing to help his students. You should take his class for the best
His technique is organized, simple and easy to understand. Dr. Stein is hard – working, knowledgeable, so smart, understanding, and nicest professor I have ever had. He makes a difficult subject become an easy class.

I was getting an F at first, then i had a C, then i took his final where he takes the lowest score and drops the test. BOOM! I came out with an A. He's soo generous on his curve. If you have an 80% you have an A. Has study guides and sample tests (in which for test #4, its the exact same test). A+++
Yeah, he is generous in grading. He is knowledgeable, thoughtful, elegant, shy, and so smart. His lectures are organized, clear, easy understand.Outstanding professor and high-class person, too.He can teach many subjects and speak many languages. All of good students love him.He earns an A+ + +
My experience with him is totally opposite of what reported. The guy doesn't lecture much. But when he does, he is highly articulate. He's the hardest professor, probably the laziest, I had ever had. It's not easy to pass his class. 70% of students took mechanics and waves flunked. Maybe more.
His highest degrees and professional lectures are the result of hard work, perseverance, planning,self-discipline.He used to organize his lectures and make everything ready and clearly.I believe that he is doing what he can do best for his students.Excellent Professor and respectable person, too.
only takes roll on the first day so you only have to show up on test dates. just study off the study guide and sample test and youll get an a/b. at first i thought i was doing bad in his class but he is soo frikken generous. very cool and laid back teacher
If you depend on lectures to pass, then you'll be in trouble here because his lectures are only app. 15 minutes + a video. However, if you use the book/study guide/sample exam, you'll be okay. He is a good speaker (so I wish he would lecture more) and a lenient grader. Very nice and approachable.
LAB WAS SUPER EASY!!! ALL YOU HAD TO DO WAS SHOW UP AND GET AN A...what else could you ask??? His class was harder... but if you studied you can do alright... has tests to print and study from...I just (half assed) memorized the tests and pulled a B in his class over all! Better than others...if you have to take a science. TAKE HIS LAB THOUGH!!EASY
ooh my God!! This is the easiest class ever!! You should defenitely take Stein! He's sooooo EASY!! You don't have to show up if you don't want too! Just take the exams (which are available already!) and it's a guaranteed A!! He's very nice too!
his tests are really easy just study the sample tests he gives you.If you do well on all your test you don't have to take the final.
He can ask very hard questions on his tests. It's a challenge. I took it in the summer, so everything was fast. But he allowed us 3 hrs instead of the normal 1-1.5 hrs he usually allows his class in the fall or spring. He didn't make it harder or easier than what was on a 1 hr test. And they can be hard. He is generous with grading though.
i hardly showed up to class but i studied of the practice exams and read a little and i managed to get a b in the class. the class is very easy. take it!
Very easy, never showed up to class just studied the practice tests and got an A.
Easy class and he doesn't care if u don't show up. But if you don't go, it probably wont be easy.
Changed the book on us, so it was hard this semester. Should be easy next semester if he re-gives the same tests like he did the semesters before this. Class is useless except when it's review day. All teacher reviews below this are from when he used the old book. Not sure if he's an easy teacher anymore, but you can give it a try.
his **** is about 10-20 mins, then he shows a vido. always left early. just studied that pratice test and went to class the day before the test, he goes over everything on the test.
THE EASIEST CLASS AT GWC. He gives you the old tests to study, he gives you extra points for "scantron errors", and he reviews the whole test the day before the exam. The lab is based on just showing up to class for 1/2 hour. There should be no way that you will get anything less than an A. You only need 78% in the class to get an A.
I loved this class. Professor Stein is an awesome teacher! His lectures were very clear and interesting, and his tests are very straigt forward. He is also very helpful and a really nice guy!
This guy know his subject matter and makes this class fun. There is no HW and the tests consists of a review sheet and review quiz that become the cornerstones for passing the class. I love Astronomy, so I read the book anyways, but you can survive quite well with just the practive quiz and review. If you have to take a science class, take him.
This was the easiest class I've ever taken! All you have to is study the sample tests and reviews he hands out before the tests. I only went to class for the tests and got an A! If you do go, you'll definitely learn because he's such a good teacher who makes Astronomy interesting. I would definitely recommend this class!
This class was disturbingly easy. I don't think I showed up to more than 5 sessions, and managed an A without much effort. Then again, I didn't learn much, but considering that I didn't have much interest in astronomy anyway, I can live with that.
he's a pretty chill teacher. as long as u read the chapters in the book, this class is a breeze.
The GREATEST TEACHER IN THE WORLD! The easiest two "A" I ever recieved for the least amount of work.
This is an easy class, the topic is interesting to me. However, he does not deserve his pay check, all he does id show movies and give tests. You really have to learn on your own.
Taking a certified GPA friendly course such as Astro. 100 w/ Prof. Stein, helps to boost your GPA which enhances your shot at scholarships and Univ acceptance. Recipe for this course: Only MultipleChoice exams. Unlike most prof's, Stein blesses you w/ review sheets for each exam w/ Q's and A's that will appear on the exam. My GPA says Thanks Stein!
a really good teacher, his astronomy class may be really easy (which it is) but his physics class is no joke
Sweet guy, brilliant and pretty boring. All you need to do is print out the online study guide and practice test and know them front and back. You need to read but skimming is fine. No need to stay for the films. He lectures for 15 to 30 mins tops, you can leave after that. Easy A if take advantage of the online help.
Half of the class failed or got a D. What does that tell you?
I took this class with the lab. The lab is an easy A as long as you attend the sessions. Easy work. There's only like 8 classes of the whole semester. The class itself was easy. I rarely went to class and got a B. The tests are sorta hard. You really have to read the book to get an A but he gives you samples and old tests. Take him.
He might be a good teacher in Astronomy 100. But he sucks in Physics 185. He didn't give any extra credit or points for the lab. The whole semester are based on 4 exams; and the exams are super difficult, 80% of the class got D or F!!
Wow. THIS CLASS WAS HORRIBLE. The class started off with 44ish. After 1st test, half dropped. After 2nd, only ten left (including me)... After 3rd, even I dropped the class (AND I NEVER DROPPED A CLASS IN MY LIFE!) ALL I can say is.. "GOOD Job Dr. Stein.. You managed to fail everyone!"
I had him in Physics 280 and 285. He's an extremely helpful teacher. The best Physics teacher I have ever known. Got out totally hooked up in his class. If you're serious Physics, or science in general, he's a 'must-take'. By the way, his thorough knowledge of physics and math are respectable. I'm one of his big admirers.
Attendance is necessary, and almost all lab exercises are from the lab book. Short and easy labs though.
Easy class, he does all the work for you on the board before you get there. Make sure you go to every lab and you'll get an A. NO EXAMS or quizzes in this lab.
please take my words, if your math skill is not beyond cal 3 with diff equation. dont take physics 280. class start 40, only 5 pass and all with C. his point is to use math articulate with physic. exam contain 4-5 questions. if u can do 2-3, be proud of yourself. since you are the only one can do. But Good Luck
He is an amazing teacher, the class is incredibly difficult and he really focuses on your mathematical know-how. I recommend getting practice exams to study off of and see what he is looking for. He prepares you for the University where other professors spoon feed you. Good luck and do as many problems as possible. Summer course is easier.
brilliant guy and v. clear lecturer. you should read the book before class to get a good grasp b/c he only does the most essential examples v. quickly. more than willing to help, but won't eagerly offer. you have to ask. only had 2 labs in total summer session, both easy. tests v. hard but not impossible. course is heavy into calc 3+ math.
Very difficult class for a summer session. He removed a lot of materials but still NO ONE GOT AN A. Three multiple choice midterms and a VERY DIFFICULT open textbook final exam. No curving. I recommend taking this in fall or spring unless you are already familiar with the subject. No problem with the professor. Know your Calc 3!!
If at all possible, do not take a class from this professor. He is the worst teacher I have ever had. He stands and talks in a "Ben Stein" monotone voice the entire lecture. There is no interaction with the students and if you ask a question he makes you feel stupid. Lab is a joke. You dont learn anything from it, its a waste of time.
Some people say summer class is easier, but I DONT THINK SO!! Lab was easy, 3tests were hard but not impossible... Final was incredibly hard even though he let us bring any kind of physics book. I read the whole section and did all the homework he assigned, and still got failed. You better do tons of extra work other than homework to pass
Avoid him
If you?re a "Chinese- American", you should take his classes. He loves everything about Chinese. He posted Chinese pictures and proverbs on his web sites; always favorites some students over others.
Easy F, worst teacher ever. Extremely hard grader, unhelpful, lazy professor. He does not know how to teach.
Hard tests. He expected you to be at his level of mathematic and physic. He is smart but did not know how to teach the class well. Favorite some students over others. Try to avoid him.
Do not take this class with this professor. His puts exam questions on exams that are not included in the book or what is taught in lecture. Take this class somewhere else unless you have already had calc 3. Plan on spending 4 - 5 hours a day 7 days a week studying. Two 75s, Two 60s and the rest < 40 on the first exam and similar on the second
Don't take unless already a whiz at Calc 3. 2nd test almost all got a 20%. How is it possible that 30 or so students all get 20% or less!! He does not curve. Do not expect any partial credit. I am an A-B student and had to drop.
Worthless prof. Tests questions that are nowhere near what is in the book. Study hard and he will still gleefully fail you. Keep away unless you want tonhave a bad taste in your mouth... Dudes like this should be fired. Worst teacher I've had in a long time.
If you're a serious physics student, then I would recommend taking his class. It will be difficult and challenging, but worth it if you put in the effort. Really knows his stuff, but has difficulty explaining. Don't expect homework problems be like the problems on the exams. Open to answering questions plus lab attendance is a guaranteed 100 pts.
clear teaching and a very nice guy
Hard class, but hard subject. Prepares students for higher learning. If you study hard and do your homework, you will get a good grade.
Extremely nice guy. You really know your stuff by the end of this class. It is not easy but it prepares you very well for higher level classes. Be prepared to work hard.
extremely nice and helpful teacher. dont expect an A or B if you dont fully understand lectures. His lectures are very clear and organized. if you think that all you do in his Phys class is to study fomulars and to memorize HW problems, i would recommend you NEVER taking his class since exam questions are unlike the ones in the book. it requires
extremely nice and helpful teacher. His lectures are very clear and organized. if you think that all you do in his Phys class is to study fomulars and to memorize HW problems, i would recommend you NEVER taking his class since exam questions are unlike the ones in the book. it requires lot of critical thinking. best teacher ever !!!
Great Professor, very clear in his lecture and willing to help you. Don't expect the class to be easy because it is not.
This class is inherently hard. But the way Dr. Stein presents the subjects is very elegant. He makes it look sooooooo easy, But in reality, it is very difficult. Very nice teacher, very helpful if you ask questions. If you take any of his upper division classes, make sure your are comfortable with relating different equations together!!!
Professors Stein is a great teacher. If you need help, don't afraid to ask him because he wants his students to ask him as much as possible. His lecture is crystal clear, but don't expect the class to be easy. Too bad he doesn't teach upper division physics anymore because I don't think no one in GWC can teach as better as him.
I took Professor Stein's Astronomy Lab and it is very easy to earn an A. All you have to do is show up every week and do the assignment. If you ask him a question, he will answer it and let's you work with other students. I am not sure about his actual Astronomy Class but take his lab if you want an A. Just show up and finish an assignment!
Dr. Stein is a great professor. He likes the students to ask him the questions. Come to the lab, office if you dont understand any probem. Physics is the toughest subject. You will learn more in physics evenif you get a C. Don't worry, passing the class is your goal in studying physic. you can get A in other class to improve your GPA. Take him pls!
The best instructor ever. Easy A. Just make sure you attend the lab and the lectures and you'll earn your A. Gives a lot of extra credit. Crystal clear and helpful. GPA booster. Coolest guy ever.
The best instructor ever. Easy A. GPA booster. Lectures crystal clear. Attend lab and lectures and you'll earn your A. The coolest guy ever. Tests based off homework and examples. Super easy class. Recommended multiple times over.
I have such great respect for this guy and his knowledge. Unlike many GWC instructors, Dr.Stein knows his stuff and knows how to teach. Hes patient and willing to answer all ur questions, and help you whenever you needed. Warning: physics 185 is challenging, you MUST study, its not math. You'll learn a lot from Stein. He's very generous w/ grading
Dr.Stein is extremely helpful, nice and knowledgeable. He's a strange n cool guy. His lectures always make the concepts look so clear n simple, but in fact they're not T_T. Freakin' hard tests that require lots of critical thinking. Revise your calc, trig and geometry, do as many hw probs as possible. Definitely one of the toughest classes at GWC!
I have great respect for Dr. Stein. I have taken both his E&M class, and the modern physics class. His labs are very easy. His lectures are crystal clear, and the tests are extremely difficult. I never worked so hard in a class before. At first I hated that, but now I respect how much he pushes his students to succeed. Highly recommended.
I am an A student and this class was HARD! Goes quickly over all concepts and then test are insanely hard. Test were 4 questions and so its basically 100% 75% or F. Lab was pointless. Study as much as you can and around 80% of students actually drop. Tough class.
its definitely possible to get a B in this class. you have to LEARN THE CONCEPTS, not just memorize how to do problems. labs are easy. got a B in this class.
Tough class. Do not take if you want an A. When students don't drop, most struggle to get C's. If you do take the class, do as many problems from as many different resources as possible. His exam questions are 25 pts apiece with partial credit at 5 pt intervals. Hopefully you know how to answer the questions. Exams are easier at MIT.
not an easy subject but stein made it bearable. he makes you learn concepts, not just memorize a bunch of problems! overall, i was really happy taking this class. learned so much from him!
Dr.Stein is the one that really prepare you for future engineering career. It was hard, but not impossible once you come to class, take good notes, get on early with homework. It's not algebra-based physics, so wake up guys! There's at least one integration problem in each test, so beside doing as much as exercises, THINK of your own approach!!
Easiest class among the sequence of three. Half the class gets A & half gets C, wierd. Concepts are easy, problems are straight forward from equations. Only few types of questions repeat again in each topic, so spend time doing homework would definitely help. You may need to modify formula or use a combination of given ones. think outside the box.
Granted Dr. Stein has hard tests but if your positive and stick with the class throughout the semester he will pass you if you earn a good grade on your final. Study a lot and you must do the homework if you dont get the lectures otherwise expect a 20/100 on every single test. He's not as bad as everybody says he is :D
He is a great professor.. He hates cheaters, so he will literally fail the whole class in order to fail those cheaters, so just tell your classmates not to cheat.. !! EVER!
Second time taking the class and i failed
This class is hard. Stein's tests are very difficult. Lab is really easy though, it's basically a free 100 points. But his test questions can be tricky and are always much harder than the homework questions. Your grade is based off lab and exams only. He curves a lot though.
very good and clear lectures, 100x better than other profesors. willing to help if have questions. tests pretty complicated but on review day we go over what kind of q's will be on the test. overall good teacher!
NOT an easy A. His lectures alone are definitely not enough to understand the subject. Gotta read the text carefully and outside sources are helpful too. The problems on tests are NEVER straight out of the book and you have to understand the concept and know how to apply them. Gives a formula sheet for the tests.
This professor knows everything about physics, but has zero idea how to make it accessible to his students. His more recent test had a high score of 72%. Failure as a teacher. On the study guide he wrote "Don't even think about asking me for help on these problems." Anytime you have a hard time with something he says, "It's easy for me." Terrible.
This class is incredibly hard. The lecture notes is basically a summary of the book. You need to do homework and use outside resources to understand. The tests are all about concepts so you cannot easily plug-in. I am in multivariable calculus and I have such an easier time than with this professor
EE Major here, so i guess it's safe to say this stuff is my Jam. Although lab equipment may have lacked in quality, I'm more of a theory kinda guy anyways. This man has a very interesting background. The main thing that stuck with me from his lectures is the elegance in the symmetry of our universe. You are very lucky that he teaches at GWC!
Lol. This class is so hard, it makes me laugh. Sometimes I want to cry. But honestly, if I put in the time to study more, I would've gotten better scores. Keep in mind, I study a lot, but this class requires a lot of work for people who aren't comfortable with the material. He's really nice and if you ask him, he'll help. But it all depends on you.
One of the brightest people that you'll meet. Stein definitely knows a lot about math and physics. His tests are damn hard. Lectures are entertaining, but you will have to do the homework and use outside resources to understand the material.
more than half the class dropped. that should say something about him. i should of listened to my counselor when he told me to try to take this class elsewhere.
He is a good professor, but his exams are very hard!!
He is a good person, but not a good professor. Tests are ridiculously hard! He mixed the tests between algebra-based physics & cal-based physics, so if you take algebra-based physics, be prepared! Free 100 points for lab, grades only based on 4 tests (each worth 100 points), no participation or hw grade. Lectures confusing. Take someone else!
This was the hardest class in my life. I dropped it and am now taking it at OCC. Looking back, steins lectures were actually pretty good, better than Professor Devine's. Stein is a good professor in that he's knowledgeable, and brilliant; he'll present physics to you in a way that seems almost effortless. The drawback? really, really hard tests...
the tests are comically hard. he is an great lecturer and is helpful when you ask questions. the tests are always way harder than the hw though and doing hours and hours of work still doesn't prepare you for the tests. lab is super easy. it would be nice if there were other ways to earn points bc the tests are just insane and make me want to cry
In order to be prepared for the tests, you have to use outside resources to get lots and lots of practice. His lectures are crystal clear and he is incredibly helpful during office hours but his tests require you to critically think and combine multiple concepts while pressed for time. Lab is free points as long as you go and put something on paper
I was terrified going into this class, but I managed to pull it off. His lectures aren't enough. You need to read the book and understand the concepts. The homework is nowhere near enough. I got an A by doing as many problems as possible, not just the homework. I studied several hours per week. Don't expect to cram before the test; it won't work.
Super hard. Ruined my gpa even though i tried really hard and went to office hours. He is aloof during lab and office hours. So so hard
Calc based physics is hard. And he is very similar to university professors, so if you blame him for your bad grades, maybe you oughta change your major. Steins tests are hard, but nowhere near some universities. His lectures can be boring, but he does give great examples. His class helped me figure out how to study and gave me skills ill use 4eva
I would not recommend this class. Lectures were too basic. You would be better off skipping lecture to study in the library. Do every single problem in the chapter and maybe you'll pass. This is a class where you teach yourself and pray that you are able to fully master the concepts because his tests are insane.
The word hard can't describe his exams, he only explain the basics in the class so its not even worthy going to the class. Just take it anywhere else!
WAY BETTER than most of the other professors in the math department. His lectures are organized, clear, and legible. And he usually posts summaries about the key ideas on his website to help you get grasp the big picture. Exams and quizzes are doable if you do the homework and practice daily. He's really friendly and helpful. Great teacher overall
My biggest gripe about Dr. Stein is that he does not set students up for success. He does the bare minimum in lecture and sends students on their way as though he's taught them everything they need to know. His classes need to be longer or he needs to use his labs as time to practice problems in groups.
We started with 68 students. After over half the class withdrew over the semester, I finished with the 3rd highest grade in the class! Thought I would get an A for sure since I heard he curves a lot, but he decided not to curve our class and I received a B after all that work. I'm no longer taking Physics at GWC.
I've never had a professor like Stein. Classmates ask for clarification and, in return, Stein gives a very unhelpful derogatory remark. I asked for help on a problem and he told me to figure it out. He is very disorganized, often makes excuses for mistakes he makes during examples and lecture notes. If you're looking to learn, do not take Stein.
Don't know where to start. First off he makes many mistakes during lecture. Usually with variables and equations. If he is confused how is the whole class supposed to learn? Second, he is reluctant to answer questions, and when he does usually he responds with, "whats so hard about it?" Finally the Tests are ludicrously hard. Avoid him.
I took both Math and Physics with Dr. Stein & am so glad I did. Though his exams can be challenging, he is clear what he will test you on. In an age of online classes, it's a relief to have a real teacher for once. I cannot imagine youtubing my way thru a tough topic such as DiffEqs. We're very lucky to have someone as learned as Dr. Stein!
Doing the bare minimum would be completing the listed practice problems, but if you want to excel? Get challenging problems from a variety of sources. By paying close attention to his lectures, practicing the types of problems he goes over in his review sessions, and attending office hours (I was one of the few if not the only one), I succeeded.
Dr Stein is very knowledgeable and presents clear & well organized lectures. The exams weren't as hard as others said. physics exams are supposed to be tricky. He gives us plenty of time for the test. Workloads are not as heavy as calculus or general chemistry. I really like his lecture, wish his lecture could discuss the concept more in depth.:)
Professor Stein is a real university level professor. He is very knowledgeable and expert in his field with both math and physics. He is also very friendly and supportive to students. He is truly a mentor.
Professor Stein really knows his stuff. He is one of the professor who does not need notes to lecture difficult concepts. I like his lecture a lot. I just wished that he could spend more time on lecture and discuss the concepts in more detail.
He is not a type of professor that wants to answer questions. His test is really hard. The homework and practice he gives are completely different from the test. Many students in my class fail his test. The only good thing is you only need to score 75% on tests to get an A if you go to the lab regularly. His lab is easy.
He lectures the material, but it's not enough to pass the class alone. You need to put in the effort and work on problems from the textbook and outside resources. He's always available if you have any questions or need help. He is extremely knowledgeable in physics. If you want a challenge and a sense of accomplishment, take this course.
harder than PHYS285.I averaged probably 15 hrs of studying per test (should have studied more) Lectures are very fast paced, mostly centered on proofs of problems more than working examples. calc 3 topics will come up, i would only recommend this course to ppl strong at the calc 2 level. prof does not like questions, can be condescending, defensive
Very instruction is given, only the basics. HW and lecture concepts dont match that of tests.
Grade is comprised of 4 very tough exams and lab attendance. Grading scale is lowered, but it's not enough. Pure lecture during class and no chance to practice work. Does not teach effectively. Not helpful in office hours, just did the problems for me instead of trying to help me understand. I wish I could recommend this professor, but I cannot.
Dr. Stein is an old fashioned professor, the good type. No power-point, no computer work, just old fashioned notes on board. He is hard, but fair. Tests are really hard, but come on, this is Physics. You want to know how hard physics is at a real college, take Dr. Stein. He prepared me. I am grateful, but You don't know that yet.
