I had to post because Professor Burke was the best MAT17 professor I had. OH are helpful. She highly values the material on the worksheets. My class with her was small so she was able to tailor her lectures. I got a B simply because calculus is hella hard and my classmates learned the material more than me (the curve was still generous).
She is very smart and passionate about math, but she can go fast so do not be afraid to ask questions. There is a lot of homework problems, but u can find the answers online if you can not figure it out. The weekly quizzes are straight from a question on the week's homework. The midterms and Finals are hard, but do ex and u will do good! Just work!
If you put in the work, you'll be fine. She really cares that you understand the material and her worksheets are really helpful. The quizzes are tedious, and her exams are long, but if you just go over your notes and do the homework and worksheets, it's nothing new
There's no extra credit. Go to class and read the book. The quizzes are exactly the homework but just different numbers. Her tests are really hard so the averages are super low. As long as you go to lecture, do the homework and lecture examples you can get a good grade.
Try taking another professor if possible. Her tests are difficult with word problems. I thought I would pass with the help of my co-class but not even with the extra help I did. She really focuses on you to explain your answer apart from doing the work. Ive gone to office hours and it did not help me.
She is by far the best lecturer I've had in the 17 series but that's not saying much. Lectures are ok. The worksheets are poorly written and confusing and honestly a waste of time. Homework is graded and LONG. Tests are difficult with weird questions sprinkled in. She does not give out practice tests.
With Burke, you can end up with a good grade if u know how to study. Just do the homework, "memorize" some of the hw solutions for the quizzes, get a smart group for discussions or go to the calc room to figure it out, and do all the lecture examples/additional probs for the midterms and final. Easy B, difficult A. Lots of work, but this is da way
In my opinion 17C material was the easiest of the series but her teaching style made it VERY confusing. Makes us do weekly quizzes, worksheets, and hw (which are super long). But getting an A is doable, just make sure to do the lecture examples and additional problems (pls do it), some problems in the midterm are EXACTLY like those.
The worst math professor I've had here. She frequently doesn't know the answer to questions in office hours and refuses to ever post solutions. Homework is completely different than lecture and exams are even more different. She refuses to compromise and never gives straight forward answers.
The class is hard for me and I didn't pass. I don't think the lecture really explain the knowledge clear. I learned most of stuff from TA. You will need to read a lot and do a lot of homework which is due once a week. The test is not easy, but if you can do most of homework, you will be fine with it. There is quiz once a week based on the homework.
For her hw, it can take hours to complete, even if you know what youre doing. The numbers can get ridiculous and its easy to make mistakes. She talks a lot. You could doze off in lecture for 10 mins, come back and see you havent missed anything, but still learn nothing. Be prepared to self teach. Or just avoid this professor.
As a math major, Ive taken many of math classes with a variety of math professors. Burke is the worst Ive seen by a stretch. Her homeworks are awful. She reads straight from her notes and adds nothing to them, but doesnt post her notes because otherwise nobody would show. She may be a good person/researcher, but she is not made for teaching.
Lectures are a confusing mess that sounds like a text to speech program read the textbook; explaining 1 problem will take the entirety of the lecture; not a very effecient way to teach concepts. Self teaching is a must, Webwork is loathesome and takes ages to do, with some problems having a caveat or trick not taught in lecture. Exams suck, 3/10
Besides her worst teaching, her personality is a problem. She lower the whole class grade and curve line is high, because she did not want most people to pass. 30% people will get D or worse. HW 10 hours/week, study 5 hours/ week. BTW, this is a 3 unit course. She treat us like graduate students. She made differential equations worst.
The laziest professor I've ever had. Barely covers the basics in class. Office hours are useless and she clearly does not care. Will never give a direct answer.
She is a researcher first, professor second. She solves some examples in class in a very convoluted way, which make you lose track of the material. To add insult to injury, she does not post her solutions online. A large part of the grade are two homeworks, one of which is straightforward, but the other is incredibly difficult. Curves very poorly.
In math, Korana knows her stuff. Differential equations however is just a very difficult class. She assigns 2 assignments per week - WebWork and Canvas. The Canvas hw can be done in 10 minutes, but WW takes several hours. The reason why she is a 3 and not higher is because she makes the midterms far too long - impossible to complete in 1 hour.
Burke is honestly a great professor who genuinely cares about her student's learning and deserves better reviews. Her lectures are sometimes fast but mostly easy to follow. The homework can be long but they're taken from textbook so it's not hard to figure out. Her tests are pretty straightforward if you do all the homework and practice problems.
Burke seemed awesome initially, but she did not explain anything and just wrote out theorems and then did example problems - without explaining anything. It was very frustrating. She did not explain the reasoning behind anything she did.
I've learned a lot of the material on my own and on youtube because of how vague and confusing she is during lectures. Much of the assignments you are given will include material she doesn't even cover. She talks as if she were a textbook. focuses so much on the theory that you don't ever really understand how to actually solve the damn problem.
She is available during office hours and goes over homework problems. If you do the homework, you'll better understand the problems and will do good on the midterm. There are a lot of homework problems, but they help you understand the concepts more.
Professor Burke has decent lectures and explains concepts ok. Based on the exams though her lectures clearly aren't enough to prepare even along with homework. Exams are extremely difficult. When asked for office hour appointments, she is rude and even not helpful in office hours. Make sure to do additional problems, only things that help.
To be frank, I really really like Dr. Burke as a person and she was accessible outside of office hours and very nice, but I didn't do well in the class. Keep in mind that I'm not the best studier and I got a B+ in 17A and a C+ in 17B while putting in quite a few hours a week. So i don't know if the problem was her or me lol
I had a terrible time in her class. She's very condescending towards students when they ask questions. If you ask her a question she thinks you should already know the answer to, she'll smirk at you and/or give a witty answer. Her tests are also extremely hard.
She made this class so much harder than it had to be and justified it by saying that wed be doing these harder problems in higher math classes. Her lectures are confusing, she tends to skip over steps that are important. Its precalculus but she explains it as if students already know the subject. Homeworks arent that helpful either.
WORST MATH PROFESSOR I HAVE HAD, NOT GOOD AT EXPLAINING CONCEPTS AND TRIES TO FORCE STUDENTS TO LEARN A CERTAIN WAY EVEN THOUGH IT IT MUCH MORE DIFFICULT. SKIPS STEPS WHEN SOLVING PROBLEMS AND STUDENTS ARE LEFT WONDERING WHERE SHE GOT NUMBERS FROM. POOR JOB AT EXPLAINING THE MATERIAL. WILL AVOID TAKING ANY OF HER CLASSES FOR SURE.
Professor Burke seems very intelligent and knows what she's talking about. She just doesn't explain the material well. It is as if she thinks it is common sense and we are supposed to just understand. During lectures, she misses many crucial steps and expects us to know them. Also, both midterms were very long and difficult.
DON'T TAKE THIS PROFFESOR!!!!! SHE DOESN'T KNOW HOW TO TEACH, MOST OF THE STUDENTS IN MY CLASS ARE STRUGGLING!!! SHE EXPLAINS EVERYTHING AS IF IT WAS COMMON SENSE AND TENDS TO SKIP STEPS. FURTHERMORE, HER HOMEWORK DOESN'T RELATE TO THE MATERIAL TAUGHT IN CLASS!!! I USUALLY LEARN MORE WATCHING YOUTUBE VIDEOS!!!
i recognize the same topics from high school in her lectures but the way it is explained and presented makes it very difficult to understand. she skips over many steps and it is just hard to keep up w her. her class has discouraged me from taking math ever again sadly. its also taken a huge toll on my gpa. try to avoid.
At first, I thought I was just bad at math, but Burke is just a really bad professor. She skips a lot of crucial steps, her lectures/examples don't help with homework or the exams. Unfortunately, you're gonna have to teach yourself for most of the course. It's frustrating how awful she is as a professor and it negatively affects my GPA.
This teacher made math very difficult. I took Precalculus in high school and just needed a refresher. She didn't explain the concepts very well and skipped many details. She made it more difficult than it should have been. I went to tutoring and they were able to give me a simple way to solve a problem. I do not recommend taking her class.
I thought I was just terrible at math but she is not good at explaining things by any means. Online homework problems at times made no sense and were very time consuming. Some problems on exams looked foreign to me at times. Everyone else that I talked to said they struggled as well!!!
Very fast paced, lots of note taking. You could tell she is very familiar with the material, but does a horrible job of explaining it to the class in a way that makes sense. Don't even try to ask questions, she might encourage people who are confused to speak up, she will give you the most sarcastic response as if it was obvious the first time.
Really hard class, it requires a lot of studying. She posts homework due every Friday and worksheets to practice the lectures material. Lectures are good, but I would say she moves too fast, and she skips steps in the process. The class in general tries to cover a lot of topics which makes it really difficult.
Pre-calc with Dr. Burke was more difficult than it should have been for a refresher course. I took this class to brush up on my skills for higher math and ended up more confused in the long run and barely passing the overall course. The only grades are homework, exams, and three surveys throughout the quarter. The class is curved but not the exams.
Dr. Burke is alright. I was able to get by with what I remember from high school math. Her lecturing style wasn't helpful for the lessons where I learned new things. The class length doesn't help either, especially when she tries cramming in two or three concepts in the last 5 minutes of class and people start packing up.
This was an overall terrible class. Professor is clearly knowledgable but not good at lecturing. The exams are lengthy and so is the homework. I took this class as a refresher but I ended up confused and frustrated with myself for not understanding much. Final grades are based on exams, 3 surveys, and homework. The grade curve is why I passed.
Korana Burke might be the worst teacher at Davis because I have never met such a condescending teacher. She basically told me I will fail in life if I don't know how to solve this problem. She messes up her work or she doesn't explain well. She assigns a crazy amount of hw and her tests are super hard. I would give her rating a zero if I could.
She likes to skip steps when lecturing and asking her questions gets annoying because she still wont explain it differently to where you can really understand. She assigns so much homework which I feel isnt necessary. She also assigned my class to read the textbook and take notes on it so that was added hw for us. Tests were kind of fair
Showed up to every single lecture and attended office hours with the hopes that Id do good, but NOPE. Dr. Burke is a nice person and incredibly smart, but will do half the lectures in her head without explaining and makes everything so complex. Do not take unless math is your strong suit!
Dr. Burke is very kind, funny, and sweet. I enjoyed her lectures very much. I was always so relaxed hearing her voice. I came to class, sat in the front, sat back and took notes and was chill when I would listen to her lecture. She teaches in a direct way that can be useful for all the content tested in this course. I love Dr. Burke.
one of the better 17 series teachers, she knows the content very well, the only thing is she moves very fast, but this is mostly a fault w the course in general, shes very nice and willing to help, shes pretty generous w the curves I would say. just study and work hard.
She is a great person who wants students to succeed but is not a great professor at all. Her lectures are not posted so you have to show up to class to get the notes but her lectures are basically the textbook. The discussions are mandatory and there is a quiz and worksheet due every week.
I took 17A with Burke and plan to continue the 17 series with her. The class is hard, ya theres no getting past that. I had a difficult time because I didnt go to office hours and such from the start, but Burke is on top of it and if you ask for help she will give it and honestly she had more faith in me than I did myself.
Dr. Burke is very kind and understanding. She is always available to speak to and helps you out at office hours. I would totally recommend, the class is hard its calculus but she actually helps me understand it.
This professor has been frustrating to put it lightly. There has been an excessive amount of work assigned which is overwhelming. The work is done entirely online and is a pain because of how broken the system gets sometimes. Overall, try not to take this class unless you've taken the course before or did calculus in high school, good luck.
I had previously written a poor review for this professor for MAT22b. She is an entirely different person in this class. Very accessible, very helpful and very understanding. In short, avoid her for lower division math as she struggles to explain concepts that seem trivial to her, but amazing professor in upper division!
Dr. Burke has a bad rep because her tests are incredibly hard, but she genuinely cares about all her students' success equally. She worked incredibly hard during the online quarter to make sure we all understood the material and gave as many extensions as she could. She always has an amazing curve. I recommend her if you take a co class alongside!
(I had Prof Burke for winter 2020) I was initially worried about Prof. Burkes ratings on RMP. However, she is a great choice. Grades are not only based on tests. Her quiz questions come from a test bank that is sent out and she offers ways to replace a bad quiz. She has surveys and participation assignments that arent hard. She is approachable.
I took Burke for Mat 17 A & B and let me start by saying those are tough classes. Overall, I got to appreciate her since she really shows that she cares about students and that they learn. I really enjoyed her lectures, she provides many many examples. She expects you to learn all the material, so be prepared!
I took Burke for Spring 2020 online and I am so glad I did. Math is NOT my strong suit so the way she broke up the course into smaller categories (about 20% not math-related) REALLY helped my grade. This course is hard and with everything going on, it showed that she really cares about her students. Really grateful for all that she did for us.
I took calculus in high school and MAT 17A and B are pretty much a review of that, except Prof. Burke completely over complicates subjects. I already knew most of the material, and that is the only thing that saved me in these classes. She expects 100% devotion to math and sometimes even my TA would have trouble answering questions she assigned.
Make sure to do all 10 homework questions even though she only grades 1 of them. The only hard part of this class was the online quizzes each week. The written final was easy (if you did the homework correctly), but the optional online one was very difficult. Lots of extra credit and you can drop quizzes. Cutoffs werent given tho
Dr. Burke is pretty nice, but a really tough grader. Her tests are also extremely rough. Having her online for spring quarter made it twice as hard. If youre going to take her class, take it in person. Shes really rough to work with online.
I took her for MAT17A and MAT17B. MAT17A in person was amazing with her; she's a great lecturer and made the class so easy to understand calculus. She even had me telling people I liked calculus when I've hated it most my life. Then I took MAT17B with her online and it went so poorly. She overloaded us with work and made learning really hard. Sad.
After reading other reviews, I was shocked to see her rating is so low. Dr. Burke is very caring and does her best to make sure that all questions are answered during her lectures. If you're signing up for this class, you need to understand that the course material is difficult, it may not be the teacher.
The class itself is difficult. Try to take a co-class. She is very helpful during lecture and office hours. She drops two lowest quizzes and 1 test out four test and she curves at the end. Her test are pretty difficult and its really hard to prepare for it. Weekly homework and quiz. She has class engagement points that gives you a good grade!!
Personally, she wasnt the best fit math professor for me, as she does go pretty quickly and our styles dont match, however she does care about her students and tries her best to make sure everyone understands. If you do well with definitions and you pick up why things work easy youll be fine, and TALK TO HER because it helps a TON
She is a sweet person. She has engagement points available where you do extra assignments and in the beginning it seems like a lot, but it is extremely easy to earn in my opinion. Homework was horrible. Around 25 questions with like 8 questions in each one. I already got the point by the 10th problem. Unnecessary.
Like some have said, she seems to expect way too much. Tests are all over the place with difficulty, Ive gotten 100% and 50% on her tests. Tends to over complicate things. Lots of hw that doesnt help for tests or comprehension. Youll b mostly teaching urself if u take the class. There were questions on test even TAs didnt understand.
First of all, this class is very difficult if you dont have a strong background in calc. Burke expects you to know and remember every little detail from math. The homework and all the extra work including quizzes does not prepare you for her tests which are extremely hard. Her lectures are all over the place and she just answers random questions.
MAT17A- Tests were very difficult. Homework and quizzes were overwhelming and did not prepare you for the test. We were told that we'd have a curve and to not forget about it all throughout the quarter when scoring badly on a test or quiz; however, at the end of the quarter, we found out there will be no curve. Very disappointed, had nearly a B.
Dr Burke is a really caring and nice professor! I'd say her main strength is that she is good at answering any questions you have and she explains things really well. The amount of homework as well as the short testing periods were difficult. Otherwise, I really enjoyed taking a class with Dr Burke and I would definitely do it again!
I really enjoyed Dr. Burke. I did take AP Calc which may have helped me in this class, but she is also really amazing and patient answering student questions. This class is a little difficult, but if you do all of the work and textbook reading, you can do okay (I would suggest reworking the worksheets before tests!) Overall, she's a good choice!
As an International students, I learned AP before so her class is pretty easy for me. I even did not watch all the lec. She is a nice professor, but it is difficult to get high grades on her class. To get high grades, you have to work hard. The bad thing is she only teach things that you do not understand during the lec prep on classes.
Dr. Burke was a fantastic professor and I thoroughly enjoyed her class. Even though instruction was delivered online, she was funny, very kind, and cared about her students. If you work hard, do your homework, earn your class engagement points, and show your work on tests/quizzes, you're at least guaranteed to pass. I suck at math and still passed!
Prof Burke is REALLY good at answering questions during lecture. If you have one, she'll actually pause, go over it and make sure you get it. She pays attention to questions in chat too and her Canvas is heCKAA organized. Sure, her tests are hardx10 but, she gives partial cred if you show some work and that's really what made up most of my scores.
Burke is really nice and helpful. Her lectures are just her going over problems, so you need to read the section beforehand and come with questions. A lot of other things go into your grade, so exams are only like 50%. The 4 tests are difficult tho, mostly because you only get 24 minutes. So you'll have to learn to work fast.
I struggle with math and was worried about this class due to the amount of work that needs to be done. I talked to her about my struggles in math and she reassured me I would be fine. She really does care about her students and it shows with how the class is set up. Her class is hard, but I got help outside of class that helped me pass the class.
If math isn't your thing, don't take it with prof burke. Her lectures are just example problems, and she doesn't explain anything. You teach yourself out of the textbook. The only reason I passed was because I took AP Calc. The only redeeming qualities I could give her are that she drops your worst test and she seems to care about her students.
Prof. Burke is organized, consistent, understanding, patient, and enthusiastic. She wants you to do well! She also asks for feedback consistently to improve her class. Currently taking her again for 17B (she gave a few additional options compared to last quarter for those who thought she gave too much work).
Literally the worse professor Ive ever had. I would rather learn from a pile of rocks than take another one of her classes. Save yourself the terror that is dr Burke and take someone else.
Dr. Burke is a really good professor in general. Her canvas is INCREDIBLY organized and she's amazing at answering student's questions. I took her for 17A and decided to take her again for 17B. She also gives a lot of different types of assignments so tests aren't your only grade. Also, she is just incredibly friendly and caring!! Good prof!!
Not a good teacher. She has a bad attitude and gets frustrated with students when they don't understand certain concepts. This is on top of her quick lecturing pace so usually people are afraid to ask her questions. She assigns a lot of homework too. And I second what another person said that her lectures are just her doing example problems.
Her lecture style of making you learn everything on your own and only answering questions in class didn't work for me, even though she tried her best. She is nice but the class is super hard. The participation points and exam drop will save your grade. I got a B with a 70% final/exam average after the drop, but I hated every day of it.
i personally liked the class a lot. im not sure how her lower div classes are like but this class was great. she didnt give any mandatory traditional tests (no paper midterm/final) but gave the option to take a paper midterm. the final was oral as well. shes really nice and understanding. you dont need to show up to every discussion, just some.
Many of her lectures were simple and easy to follow along. She posted all her notes which are very helpful on the homework. In office hours and discussions, she is very approachable. The class only had an optional midterm and a final oral exam which were both super short and easy. (If you took ecs20 before this class, the class will be easy)
Looking at the older reviews of Dr. Burke, it seems that her lower division classes might not have been great. However, this is definitely not true for upper div. She has great lectures, and I learned a lot this quarter. She offers lots of participation opportunities. Overall, very nice and underrated professor for 108. Great and easy math class
Good professor. Dr. Burke explains concepts well through problem solving sessions. Shes understanding of student needs and concerns. Different kinds of assignments help with learning more. Oral final might not have been ideal but teaches important skills like presentation. Dr. Burke strives for us to learn rather than just get a grade.
After my downfall with another calculus professor, Dr. Burke helped me get back up. I finished the MAT17 series with her perfectly fine. There's homework, quizzes, discussion sheets, and exams, all in which can help you learn and stick the math concepts from lecture.
She is super hard on grading, the quiz is 40% which mean if you did bad on one, you are dead, final is 20% if you choose option 1, another option has higher % on the final
Assigns group work that isnt helpful. Marked me down points for not citing my sources. Not a lot of homework but you need to study a lot because she doesnt explain things well. I got a 4 in ap calc ab but Im still struggling with it.
We have four tests and nothing is about the work she talked about in class.
I took her mat108 online. She is very nice. I never listen to lectures so I can not rate her lecture. Lecture is not required to attend but discussion is. A homework every week is 25% of grade. The Final Exam (40%) is a one-to-one online meeting. She would ask you questions and you need to show her your idea of how to solve the problem.
if you want to pass just don't take her class.
Proportionally higher focus on limits and written definitions than my past calculus classes. Tests are similar to lectures and worksheets. You get to choose grade weightages which is unique and really nice. The discussion worksheets are challenging but stressful as they are graded. Homework is tedious and mostly unhelpful by the end of the class.
Dr. Burke really cares about her students, but isn't the most engaging lecturer. I never read the textbook before class/did any of the engagement points (worth up to 10% of your grade - 4 different grading options) but that worked out okay for me. She was very understanding of my medical issues and gave me extensions on all the HWs I asked for.
Dr. Burke was a great teacher! The homework was somewhat difficult but it prepared you well for the tests which were slightly easier and had redos. Her lectures are just okay, but just make sure to read the textbook sections for that lecture before the class, which are typically only 1 section at most, and you'll be okay. she does not curve tho!
Dr. Burke manages to take what you would learn in CALC AB and multiplies it so significantly. She is the definition of making you learn stuff you wont use. Her curriculum is so vastly different opposed to other math professors that their tests looked like pieces of cake compared to the ones I've taken. I will warn you, stay away from this class
Burkes class is unnecessarily complicated and difficult. The lectures are boring and makes you sleep. She doesnt do a good job of answering students questions and is very passive aggressive if you dont understand a concept. The other math professors are much more considerate of what topics are really important, so avoid her.
Dr. Burke is one of the best math instructors I've ever seen. She provides students with 3 grading options, which is reasonable. The tests are fairly easy, much easier than homework and group worksheet. This means that if you do all the assignments, then you are fine with the tests and final. BTW, tests have one redo chance.
Lectures were recorded, so they weren't mandatory. There are 4 short tests and a final instead of 1-2 midterms and a final which I think is better (more chances to raise your grade). The homework was just 10 problems per week and weren't too bad. There are weekly group worksheets that are tough, but the TA was good about answering them.
Honestly, Professor Burke was very fair to her students as she offered us 3 different grading options. Her 21A class requires you to put in a good amount of effort. The test questions are usually more simple than that of the hw. That being said, the hw is very tedious. Prof Burke is nice, but not the right prof for everyone. I ended up getting a B+
The course wasn't hard at all but I messed up big time. That's my fault. I'm here to rate the professor, not blame her (unlike others here). She is great at teaching concepts and you will probably be able to understand them. If you can't, attend her office hours and she will teach you through different approaches. Highly recommend. No curve though.
I think the reason people struggle a lot in this class is most of the work is optional: practice tests, hw (only need 50% completion), and textbook reading. I took highschool calc, so I was more prepared. If you do the work she recommends you will be fine. The grading is clear and she is generous with hw and quiz redos.
I'm not a big fan of how this professor teaches. She basically just copies the textbook to the board and explains it sort of, which doesn't really help me (I learned most of the class on my own). But, I have a friend in the class who learns that way so he loves this professor. Honestly, it just depends on your learning style.
Do the book problems for every chapter and section before a test, go to tutoring for the book questions you dont get, youll do well if you study, dont forget to do group assignments and CE
Burke is a fair professor and a good person but not a good lecturer. Few students ever understood what she said in class. Every topic we did I needed to learn properly in math tutoring at the library. If you have her, be prepared to work hard and read the lectures in advance. She is very good about giving extensions on homework.
lectures are clear and thorough w/ definitions and examples. she really wants students to be successful in the class: gave multiple grading options you could choose from, rlly generous test redos, and drops some lowest scores. course is also structured and organized well
Dr. Burke is the best math professor. You have 3 grading options so you choose what you want to count for grading. Exams are 30 minutes, remaining class time to redo 2 problems from previous exam. She genuinely cares about students and when she says she is not trying to trick you she means it. Constantly asks for feedback and applies it!
Super pleasant personality, but she teaches calculus in the most confusing and complex way possible. She's very particular with her grading, so even if you're close, you're wrong.
I enjoyed having Dr. Burke! Her class is formatted where she has four 30 minute tests. You get a chance to redo two of the four problems from the previous test. She's extremely nice and wants everyone to succeed! There's both weekly HW and a group worksheet plus no curve (but she did round my grade at the end w/o me asking). She helps a lot in OH!
Dr. Burke does try to be helpful to her students. Pre-Cal is a hard course as there is a lot of material to get through. However, I think lectures could be set up better. There is too much homework between lecture prep, surveys, webwork, and worksheets.I know its to get us to study a lot but it honestly does the opposite and is stressful.
HW and midterms tend to be hard but final is significant easier, her lecture speed is very fast so pay extra attention in class.
I want to give her a 0, but that's not possible, so I'll give her a 1.
Dr. Burke is a great math professor that truly cares about her students. I've really enjoyed taking her class and feel as though I have learned a lot. She offers retakes for every test (except the final), and it really takes the stress off learning and makes it enjoyable. I would 100% recommend her as a 17A professor.
Provides flexible grading option where you can choose which assignments to do and how much they’re weighted. Three short exams throughout (roughly every 3 weeks) and a cumulative final. Would highly recommend focusing on the worksheets she provides for studying as they’re similar to exams.
NO CURVE, so much homework, and the tests are hard. take Gorsky/Gorskiy if you can, that dude is test heavy (40% final, 20% each midterm (2), and 20% HW). That can sound intimidating but the tests are pretty easy and the curve is AMAZING, that dude makes a 70 an A and a 50 a C
I really liked this prof, you have options to be graded on either tests, hw and tests, tests, hw and class engagement (which are easy points). You'll benefit from doing her lecture preps or else you'll be lost in lecture. Overall decent professor. (Final is cumulative so beware??)
Homework isnt bad but tests are tricky. Would do as many practice problems as you can to prep for grade heavy tests
Burke is a very nice professor but the class is definitely very hard to follow along with. I found that she did not explain topics with steps which made it very difficult for me. Additionally she assigns very lengthy and hard homeworks and the short tests are also pretty difficult in comparison to the examples or homework we do.
she's an alright professor but she grades super hard and the examples and homework she does in lecture doesn't even match the tests. The tests are so much harder the the ones in lecture or homework. Some of the homework isn't even taught in class. She doesn't give out practice exams and only allows half retakes but the way she grades it doesn't help
Dr. Burke is a very nice person and seems to care about her students, but her exams are a struggle. The 30-minute tests have almost everyone rushing to finish with no opportunity to check their work, even though it's a 50-minute class period. The option to re-asses previous tests is a huge boon, but you only get 10 minutes for 3 multi-part problems
There are three tests and a final, all of which are extremely difficult. She allows 30 minutes to complete each test so it's a struggle to even finish the test. She allows redos, but they're harder and does not curve. The homework is 15 problems a week. That being said, she's not amazing but her class is survivable it just takes a lot of work.
You have the option of choosing what assignments make up your grade. 15 hw problems due each week. Three 30-minute tests, 6 problems each, all have several parts to them. Re-do's of up to 3 problems. Final is 15 problems, several parts each, 120 min. Watch/attend all lectures, do all practice problems. See tutor ASAP if not understanding something!
Lectures are somewhat disorganized, she sometimes skips steps. However, exams are very doable and she allows reassessments for missed problems. She literally pulls her exam problems from the textbook so do the suggested HW. Got in A without previous highschool calc experience.
Love Dr. Burke! Shes kind and understanding and her class was very manageable. The exam redos are generous and help a lot. Lots of lecture examples that tell you exactly what you need to know for the test. Exams are fair and mimic the lecture examples, webworks homework, and textbook problems. You only need 50% on the homework to get full credit.
Burkes is great but you will be able to gain much more from her class if this isn't your first quarter of college Like the re grades and tests are mostly based on book problems that can look weird if this is your first time looking at those types of problems in college setting. Great Prof
Dr. Burke was fair in her grading system and even allowed us to choose from 3 grading options. She really seemed to care about her students doing well and learning the material.
'm by no means a natural in math and didn't take calc in high school, and I found her lectures to be extremely clear and easy to follow along with. Honestly, if you do the homework, watch the lectures, and do all the practice problems, you should do fine on the test. Liked her so much I'm taking 16C at 8 am with her
She uses three short tests to instead the midterm exam, but the examination time is too short to finish all the questions in the paper. That is pretty awful.
she gets upset when people take pictures of the lectures during class because it's posted online. The class is also very fast paced and hard to catch up if you fall behind.
You get to choose how your graded. You will be given 3 short tests, no midterms. Make sure you understand the textbook to understand the lectures.
For all Davis students who are picking classes for their next quarter: Please just listen to me and choose a different professor. I took MAT 21A with her and she's by far the hardest professor for this course. Talks too fast, doesn't explain concepts, mean, and while other teachers allow calculators on their exams, she doesn't. Would NOT recommend.
don't take this class, it is extremely difficult. she doesn't let us use calculators and there is no curve.
Her tests are extremely difficult and are only 30 minutes each, she usually skips large steps when solving problems during lecture, and she replaces the redo test grade regardless of it being worst for the previous exam. In addition, she does not curve.
Good thing is she gives 3 grading options in which you can change throughout the year but her 3 short tests were pretty hard. Weekly homework packet and group worksheet as well. Not required but small reading for lecture prep before always helped. Overall, nice teacher that teaches well and cares about her students; just dont be surprised of tests
Burke is one of the best math professors at UC Davis. Her lectures are succinct and full of examples to help you understand the material. There are 3 midterms which are each 4 questions long and 30 minutes. You also get to choose the grading system from 3 options she gives and can redo problems on previous exams. Overall a great pick for MAT21A
Great professor overall. She makes the readings in the textbooks much easier to understand. Midterms are fast paced but the questions are easier than on the homework.
The professor's lectures are succulent and immensely informative. Midterms were fair and juicy full of attainable points. I learned much from Burke's course and would highly recommend you to take her classes. Each lecture had an enjoyable amount of extra spice sprinkled on to the main material to aid in your understanding of the mouthwatering calc.
Simply an amazing professor at this educational institution (UC Davis). Her lectures and homeworks are thought provoking and immensely interesting. The triple midterm format provides excellent checkpoints throughout the academic quarter and the challenging final will prepare you for further calculus. She is the epitome of a godly professor.
There were 3 midterms in a final, but it was nice that it was broken up into a bunch of smaller midterms. I did get covid over the course of finals, and emailing her was not that helpful of an experience. It was figured out though, and she is good at teaching and having an organized class.
BASEDD
I never wore a seatbelt while driving to campus because i wanted to perish before making it to her class
She is a great professor and offers the opportunity to retake up to half of the questions on the previous midterm for full credit. She is very helpful in clarifying questions you may have about the material and offers 3 different grading scales for you to choose from. She also really listens to your feedback and incorporates it into her class.
Terrible class structure. The 30 minute midterms are a serious time crunch. Test content is difficult and since they are short some units are left completely out (you still have to study everything because you don't know what is/ isn't included) Most learning is done individually with the textbook. NO CURVE. Grade doesn't represent content knowledge
PLEASE do not take this class if you haven't taken calculus before. Has high expectations for previous math knowledge and she will not slow down for you. Expects a very deep understanding of course concepts yet does not go into depth in lecture. Homework is difficult, and you will need to self-teach material. Tests are extreme time crunch. NO CURVE
I don't understand all the hate she is getting I will admit that this class was a little easier for me because I have high school calc experience, but even with that I still had to work for my grade in this class. The exam questions replicate book questions.
big noodle professor
I'm not sure if Prof. Burke does this for all of her classes, but she allowed her students to choose how much weight each category had (there were 3 grading options). It may be frustrating for some, but she pushes that grades aren't everything and encourages a good work-life balance.
I love professor Burke so much! She offers 3 grading options to choose. There is no curve, but each test you have a chance to redo half problems. Her lectures is very organized and there are many extra practice problems for you to do. If you do all of the practice problem, then you will definitely get a good grade in class.
Some of the Webwork (online hw) problems were absolutely a pain to solve. Offered redos on tests but they were often way harder than the original tests. Lectures were good though. I recommend studying with the textbook problems that she gives (so you can get a better grade than me).
I dont know why her ratings are so low but her teaching style is great she does many examples in class and so accesible and easy to learn from her. She offers so much extra credit/ways to makeup points plus you grade is weighted not entirely on tests.
I loved her lectures and how we got to pick how our grading. she provided very clear examples in her lectures which were very similar to the questions on the test. the one 'bad' thing is that the homework is kinda hard and comes straight from the book but we only had to do ten out of the twenty problems given for full credit. def take her for 16a
She's insanely passive aggressive when you are trying to ask questions. Doesn't give you the proper materials to study for her hard tests. Skips a lot of steps while solving problems during lectures. Makes every topic way more complicated than it needs to be. Doesn't really go over the important concepts she'll test you on. Refuses to curve.
Burke doesn't usually teach 16A, so she explained material to us like we already knew it. Be prepared to self-study. I wouldn't take her if you haven't taken calc before. Clear grading criteria where you can pick what type of grading (participation added, only tests, etc). Good if you need to get 16A out of the way and you already understand calc.
Professor Burke was one of my favorite professors. I was scared to take calc cus i never took it before but she made it so clear plus i did a lot of extra problems to help me study and all the exams were so easy. Best teacher ever and ended w a high A
Dr Burke is an incredible professor and I really appreciate her as a person. I took her course as part of the Honors Program so there were only about 20 of us and that does change the feeling of the lecture, so I can only speak to that. She is so great and I'm really happy with how the quarter went as a part of her class.
Korana Burke is a great professor. She provides clear grading criteria, so as long as you do what she expects you to do then you will pass. There are 3 midterms and a final which aren't bad, she doesn't throw curve balls at you during tests. You should take her!
I can tell Dr. Burke cares for teaching and the subject, which is unfortunately uncommon in lower div math at Davis. While I personally did not click with her teaching style, her class was organized and easy to access through online lecture recordings. Her tests can have trick questions which will not give partial credit if you fall for the trick
Professor Burke provides the clearest lectures and expectations from any math professor I have ever had at davis (and I've taken all the 21 and 22A). Her midterms are exactly like in class examples and homework and she provides so many ways to do well that the only way to do bad is to genuinely do nothing.
Professor Burke is a good professor and cares about her students learning, as shown by multiple grading options. However, she teaches the material largely by complicated cases during lectures, during which you just write to keep up. She also teaches the material in a shallow way, in my opinion, with little explanation for why the methods work.
Prof Burke was great for 16A! Her lectures were clear/she covered material at a good pace. Her tests are very predictable (if you do the extra textbook problems she gives you'll ace it). Granted, I have a calc background so I can see why other reviews say her explanations were fast/unclear. She gives redos on half the test questions if you need it!
Hard on exam
Took her for 21A and finished with her for 22B. Her style has changed a lot since then, and it's cool that she's constantly trying to improve her teaching. Homework is tough (don't cram and you'll be fine), but lectures are always helpful, and the multiple grading options cushion bad homework/exam scores. One of the best profs I've had so far.
Professor Burke takes feedback from students and you can tell she cares about them. Sometimes she tends to spend too much time talking about theory during lecture but overall lecture quality is good. No curve on tests but everything on the test is directly related to her lecture notes.
Good prof, seems wants to promote growth. But, her exam grading can be ridiculous, with minimal partial credit. Her webworks homework is very time consuming because of the ugly numbers, feels like we spend more time looking for algebraic mistakes rather than practicing differential equations. Final score can replace midterms scores if it's higher.
Dr Burke is a great lecturer. I loved math after taking her for MAT16B. A year later I finished lower div with her 22B class. She expects a lot from students but she gives a lot in return. Dr Burke cares a lot for growth which shows from her grading scheme of letting you replace MT scores with final score if final grade is higher.
You can tell Burke cares about her students. She helps in OH and she gave me multiple HW extensions. Also, she lets you choose 3 grading options on how you want your grade. On top of that, if you do better on the final than the midterms, your final will replace the midterms. That's how I got my A. Overall good and easy professor.
Burke's lectures were decent, but I definitely needed to watch some youtube videos to fill in some knowledge gaps. This class is a lot of material, so be ready for some math studying. Burke was very accessible and really cares about teaching. I would recommend!
Not a bad professor at all. She's nice and will help if you ask her. 1)There are a lot of reading assignments and homework so make sure to stay on track. 2) I didn't like her teaching style and got confused at times, but my co-class helped me understand. 3) Heavy on the amount you have to read, organized lectures with videos online
Best math professor I have ever had at UCD. Completely revitalized my confident in this after absolutely tanking 21A and there simply isn't much to say besides you should absolutely take her class if you get the chance. There are flexible grading options and she is very good at answering questions during class while keeping pace.
gets upset at students for not participating yet doesn't call on hands raised. needs to be more respectful towards students and stop complaining about how they dont do enough for the class. would not recommend at all
Midterm is extremely long and no one left the midterm in class until the last second. Can you believe a midterm with 8 pages has to be done in 50 minutes? Lots of questions with high difficulty makes me dizzy.
did not make material clear
The most terrible professor I have taken to date. The exams are beyond difficult even by studying, the exam questions are extremely specific like special instances. We did practice problems just for them not to be on the exam. She has a terrible attitude as if this weren't her profession I wouldn't recommend her to my worst enemy.
Not a good professor, does not know how to teach and acts as if everybody has a Ph.D. in math. Will make you feel as if you never learned math and will skip steps and as well grades ridiculously.
She gets a bad rep, but tbh I thought she was a great prof. There is one homework assignment a week (multiple tries, not too hard). She moves VERY fast, but she's always willing to clarify what you don't understand. I liked that I could pick how I was graded, so you can choose the weight of the exams. Show up to lecture, study and you'll be fine.
Dr. Burke gives you all the resources you need to succeed. She is super clear during lectures, and her notes and recordings are posted. Also, by letting you choose your grading scheme, she leaves room for success even if you aren't the best test taker. This class has a normal amount of homework and a lot of extra resources to help you study.
I completely understand why she gets bad reviews, but if you talk to her and goes to her office hours, you can see that she genuinely cares a lot about the success and learning of her students if they proved that they are willing to put in that work to succeed. You should be good if you don't slack and take it seriously.
Skips steps and is very unclear in her lectures. Most of the time I had to teach myself the material because she was so unclear with all of her lectures. If you truly want to understand concepts I don't recommend that you take her and instead choose a professor that cares about student understanding rather than getting through content.
I literally stopped going to her lectures because of how fast she goes, when lecturing she doesn't stop for a second for us to finish writing the notes. She posts the lecture videos and notes on canvas so I just skipped class and watch the lecture videos at my own pace so I could stop the video and take my time learning what was being taught
Do not take this course, she expects you to know the steps in a math solution during her lecture. Tests are hard and confusing.
She goes over notes in lectures way too fast and expects you to know how to do some steps without explaining them. Her notes do not match up with the homework problems at all (homework being extremely difficult). She is a good person but not the best instructor, in my opinion.
Dr. Burke is one of the best professors in the math dept. She takes her time making sure we understand the material in a deeper way. Her exams focus more on the conceptual understanding compared to other math classes.
Lectures were fast paced and difficult to keep up with, especially if you are terrible at math (me). I relied on outside resources to explain the content rather than office hrs because it was also confusing. Worst professor I have taken at UCD, was dismissive of my struggles & made my resentment for math grow more after this course . rip
Professor Burke is very nice and funny, however, I had a very hard time understanding material in her class. She does everything so fast and it makes it hard to really learn the material. She gives a lot of homework, which is based on accuracy. The one good thing is that she allows test reassesments to get up to half the credit back.
rly motivating n reassuring, if we fail its not the end of the world; shes rly understanding abt each students' math backgrounds and does her best to help(different grading options); her tests r basically what she lectures on+reassessments r life savers; i slacked off sm i think i barely passed LOL, rlly love her as a prof jst dont slack and its ez
Burke wasn't a bad professor. Negative ratings are probably are since the class itself was hard/fast paced. For me it was a lot of work and very stressful, but reassessments are offered so a bad test grade isn't the end of the world. Lectures were 8 am, so I often skipped but watched every recording. Homework was harder than the tests IMO.
Honestly, don't rely on her for anything if you take any class with her. She's clearly very knowledgeable in her field and knows what she's talking about, she is just not a good teacher. Her lectures consist of her doing example problems and narrating what she's writing (not explaining unless you ask her to, which you shouldn't have to do).
Sometimes she would skip over steps and would expect us to know some stuff without her going over it. Gives three grading options you can choose from. Can't really blame her fast pace as we have 10 weeks to go over everything in pre-calc.
I did alright because I knew some content, but I would NOT recommend if you can't handle fast lectures & new content. She pauses for questions, but asks painfully specific things from you for HW ex: snagging AT LEAST 120 points from lecture reflections, surveys, workshop attendance... it gave me so much busywork. Her notes are easy to read, though.
literally doesnt know how to teach. her lectures are just her going over homework problems and barely explains anything. doesn't actually explain how to understand concepts/how to do them but just expects us to read the book and then understand how to do every problem. do not recommend at all.
Pre Calc was really hard and I barely passed the class. Despite that I think the only reason I'm doing great in Calc was because of Dr.Burke. She gives lots of resources to study from and held lots of office hours. She also allowed you to pick your grading option that best suited you. She comes off as rude when answering questions but she helps.
I really enjoyed Prof. Burke's class. She has three grading systems that suit everyone's needs and she also gives you questions based on ones you missed on the previous exam to make up for those lost points. She really cares about her students' success. Homework questions are very similar to the exam, so practice and you'll be in good hands
Right off the bat, l'm not sure where to begin. Burke's teaching methods I dislike, every lecture are just "easy" examples which I find hard to retain information, and the homework is difficult. Expects us to read the textbook and learn MAT12 from it. Office hours are no help. If anything go to tutoring. She skips steps and makes it seem hard.
Awful lecturer. Just dumps information, does simple problems in class, gives hard HW's, and weird exams. Does not give out practice midterms or finals. Micromanages logistical details and treats us like high school kids. She is not of the intellectual caliber to teach an upper-division class. Avoid her at all costs if she teaches this class again.
Dr. Burke teaches Precalculus in such a way that you think you are taking an actual calculus course judging by the level of difficulty. But looking back, I think taking her class is the only reason why I'm doing great in calculus right now because I felt challenged in my last quarter
Pretty good overall. She's mostly very clear in her explanations. It was only Precalc too, so most of the concepts weren't too crazy.
Her course is hard! I rate her 5 because I got an A. The test is easy though about basic ideas and calculations.
This class is taught as review, so if you've never taken precalc before I wouldn't recommend it. I do recommend doing the example problems from the textbook as a study guide for exams as well as examples from class (lecture heavy). She lets you pick your grading weight and the homework was incredibly hard for no reason, don't use this to study
Even though I didn't do great in the class, I think it's possible for others to do so. If you need to take pre-calc I would recommend taking another professor, but Dr. Burke does explain most concepts properly. Sometimes it feels a little condescending, and I would 100% recommend signing up for the co-class if it is available, very very helpful.
Burke is a decent lecturer, however, if you are considering taking her for MAT12 get ready to do an extensive amount of individual study and practice. Her exams are pretty easy as long as you take advantage of the resources she gives you. Test corrections are also available which really help cushion your overall grade.
she is a good lecturer. in order to do well on exams you need to spend time outside of class to understand material. if something is unclear, she'll make it more digestible. i took this class as i have never taken precalc before, and I think that it is a lot to unpack and understand. she lets you pick the weight of grades. 3 short tests and 1 final
Professor Burke is bad. She separates the grade into many annoying little things such as workshop and reflection of reading. And she takes grades on discussion which asks u to making an answer sheet with other students. My exams are good overall and the final got free due to the Internet issue. Turns out I got a C+ which is obviously not fair to me
Professor Burke is a really great professor. She truly cares about the students and offers 3 different grading options. I averaged a 78% on my midterms but was still able to end with a 98% because if your final percentage is higher than your midterm average then it gets replaced. Her lectures are well-organized and easy to follow.
She's a great prof! She gives you different 3 grading options. Tests are pretty understandable if you do all the hw and the textbook practice problems, plus if you do better on the final than both midterms, it replaces both midterm scores. She's good with responding to questions in a timely manner and genuinely wants to help her students!
Prof. Burke's MAT012 course is challenging but rewarding. The lectures can feel fast-paced, so supplementing with the textbook and resources like unstuckstudy ai is key. Exams are tough but doable with consistent practice. Worth the effort.
First lecture she was already discouraging everyone, and tell us to re-learn algebra first to take her class which is MAT 000D with no credit. After the second week of class she would assign homework that were way harder than the material or questions we went over in class. Very intimidating and discouraging as a freshmen class. Never again!
While HW can be difficult compared to the lecture, the tests resemble the lectures in complexity. She gives students the option to reassess test problems for a better score (I got a C on a test but it was brought up to an A). Quick campuswire responder. Has a grading option were you can complete misc. assignments and reduce the weight of tests.
You get to choose your grading method to put more pressure on tests if you're good at tests or maybe put more pressure on participation and class engagement points if you'd rather do that. Reassessing my first test from a 79% to a 90%! I did a lot of reviewing by myself however Burke's lectures so help if you do the pre-lab videos!
Awful. Like straight up awful. Her attempt at teaching is like ray charles in the Louvre.. She doesnt have a clue.
I didn't like what she did for the midterms because it was every two weeks. Also, she didn't give out practice worksheets to practice for them, and when you asked, she would tell you to use the textbook, and the questions on there were easier than the actual test. She didn't involve it around practice, just examples, which didn't work out.
Honesty not too sure about her, it was a rather easy class but she wasn't too good. Nice person imo
My advice, dont take calc with her, but if you have to...start drinking heavily. 10 weeks of torture
Dr. Burke's lectures incorporated questions that students submit prior through lecture prep assignments. The grading for this class is flexible since she offers three grading options that students can choose from. Also, the tests can be partially retaken and the solutions are posted so that you can figure out where you went wrong before retaking.
Burke is a good calculus professor. She tries her best to explain the material and help students understand. While her class requires a bit of outside homework and lecture prep, if you do the assignments she recommends you should do fine. My favorite things about her class is that she is transparent about the material and her tests are fair.
i went to two lectures the entire quarter because they were so useless. the homework is incredibly difficult, but the tests were somewhat easier. she lets u retake half the problems on the tests if you did badly, but the class isn't curved because you get to chose how you're graded (all the options suck). if u can avoid her, you should
Dr. Burke is an amazing professor and you will learn a lot in this class if you put effort into it. Go to lectures even though they are recorded, and go to her office hours which are three times a week. The homework helps you learn and I highly recommend signing up for math 98. Lectures are fast paced but she does post her notes afterwards online.
So, i didnt find her particularly helpful during lecture and the tests are difficult. Youll have to study a lot on your own. She does do retests, but thats is bcuz most people fail (>50%). Thats not necessarily her, but the material. Take calc at a CC, not UCD. Way cheaper, way easier. Just avoid it. Esp the 17 series, most difficukt at UCD.
I absolutely loved Burke. She gives 3 different grading options, one of which basically gives you around 35% of your grade for free. She's very good at explaining her content, and answers any/all questions you ask. Her tests are fairly difficult. Overall the best 17B professor. Take the bad ratings with a grain of salt (at least for 17B).
Dr. Burke cares so much, she's one of my favorite professors of all time. She emphasizes learning and self-care above a letter grade, and provides optional assignments on women/people of color in math and research on education methods. Really cool format for a math class. Incredibly understanding, caring and will always help you.
Taking this class was the worst decision I made my first quarter. She teaches the way she think is good which is not and if you don't solve the problems using her method she cuts off points. I stopped going to the lectures the second week because they are so useless. She also doesn't give out practice sheets for midterms and final.
The class is lecture heavy, but only some lectures are mandatory. She did a great job at making sure students had the opportunity to ask questions, and did a good job answering. She also gives you many opportunities to succeed in her class; there are skills reassessments for tests, and you get to choose your grading option.
Dr. Burke was truly a great lecturer. As someone with no previous precalc knowledge, this class was def not an easy A, but she gives you all of the resources u need to succeed and wants you to do so. DO SUGGESTED PROBLEMS. They seem lengthy, but go to office hours if u don't understand them. Lectures aren't mandatory, but definitely don't skip.
Dr. Burke just wasn't great. She went too fast, no test prep, at times missed things in lectures so you have to learn it on your own, the textbook was confusing, homework assignments were awful, and none of the questions on the homework were ever on any tests or even on the final. Plus they were never things we learned in lecture and were useless.
You honestly need to put in a lot of work, she's not very polite. As a teacher she's alright and goes fast, she definitely knows here stuff.
Lets be honest, she teaches to the A students and doesnt really care about her other students. If you arent into math then it's tough because she wont teach it to you. She literally goes to lecture and answers the material as if you know it. It's ridiculous. So, if you want to know why nobody shows up that is why. She doesnt teach. Yeah, 2nd rate
Be ready to self-teach yourself this course. Lotsss of homework and prelecture activites which is nice for points however, makes it very easy to fall behind fast. Actual lectures were not helpful whatsoever and were more like office hours, structured in a Q and A format rather than actual teaching.
She is an awesome professor that provides a lot of material for you in her lectures. Just copy all her examples down and test yourself with them in preparation for a test. She has a test re-take policy that was a life saver, so don't worry too much about the tests. If you pay attention, do the homework, and look back on your tests, you'll do ok
Burke is at best a mid teacher who reminds one of the hopeless dread that runs heavy in ones heart She does offer multiple grading options for the class however none are perfect and leave much to think about. The overall material of MAT 12 is easy to learn but Burke isn't much help and the course is self teaching at times.
Dr. Burke gets too much hate. Students can review material before lecture and submit questions about it, which she always addresses in lecture. She's also great about making sure students have a chance to ask questions during lecture. Her tests are a bit hard but very fair. She has a grading option where she basically gives you 35% of your grade
If I could give a 0/5 I would. Burke was the worst professor I have had at Davis. Her lectures are unhelpful and she doesn't teach the material well. If you can avoid her, AVOID HER CLASS. I could write an essay about why she's is not a good professor.
RUN Please RUN
Take her if you have to, but use every single resource offered. Going to Grant and Ryan, the calc room, and the co-class are a ABSOLUTE NECESSITY in this class. Just going to lecture and discussion will do nothing for you. Like many profs, she knows her stuff, but does not know how to teach. This class is so brutal.
worst math professor you need to learn by your self lecture is useless
I found her lectures fast paced, but very helpful (and she records them). I cannot stress enough how valuable her office hours are. She lets you choose how you are graded (what % hw, quizzes, etc). You can make quiz corrections, and your grade really reflects the amount of effort you put in. She really just wants you to learn the material.
I genuinely don't know why people like her. The teaching is horrible, and the lectures are useless and unstructured, forcing you to use external tools to learn. Sure she is lenient about the grading, in that there are multiple grading schemes, but those still won't rescue you from her horrible teaching. Just avoid at all costs, this is a warning.
If she is your only option, wait until next quarter. You must learn entirely out of the bad textbook, she does not lecture. She encourages asking questions but dances around them with terrible answers. Her tests are insanely difficult, and she offers retakes but they don't help. She makes easy stuff hard and the hard even harder. Just don't.
The professor was very caring and would give extensions and not a lot of homework.
PROS - plenty of pre-lecture videos with extensive explanations. open to questions and accessible at office hours. some choice in personal grade weights (HW vs tests vs class engagement) CONS - kind of a flipped classroom model, lots of additional work needs to be put in outside of class. this isn't everyone style. tests fairly but hard to finish
To be clear, Burke has the potential to be good if she changes her attitude about things. Her structure for grading and class is excellent, and I was excited to have her at the beginning of the quarter. However, as time passed, she had a demeaning attitude towards students, made tests EXTRA long, and was not receptive to student feedback.
I learned almost all of the content from this class through the lecture prep videos that were posted at the beginning of each week + outside resources. Because of this, I didn't find her actual lectures very helpful. All the grading options that are given are fairly test-dependent. Homework is manageable and extensions are given pretty graciously.
This class isn't easy, there's a lot of new info if you've never taken calc before. But she is very accessible, provides extensions on hw no explanation required, opportunity to make up test points, & answers any question. Watch prelectures, take notes, go to class to reinforce info & ask when lost. Very thorough and wants students' success
Avoid at all cost
Go to office hours, Dr. Burke is extremely helpful and considerate if you put the time and effort in return.
only thing i didn't like was the voice and attitude apart from that her class is doable her lecture prep really helps and she offers regrades on midterms.
Dr. Burke's lectures are organised in a way that reflects what the class is struggling with and she makes sure to answer any questions both in class and during office hours. The tests are similar to the homework and she has review sessions before each exam.
Dr. Burke's lectures are well-structured and based on lecture prep, reflecting what the class struggles with. There are plentiful opportunities to get Class Engagement points, which I appreciate. The exams are fair and Burke holds review sessions before them to help with preparation. She is also accessible in OH if you have inquiries!
Professor Burke has a flipped classroom. All the learning during lecture prep (which is partially optional). Class is just examples. There's multiple grading options to change the weight of tests, HW, etc but tests are a minimum of 65% of your grade. I took AP Calc BC and still couldn't get back to a C. This is so much new material.
Amazing professor! While lectures are not mandatory, I highly recommend going to them as she takes in person feedback when lecturing and adjusts her lectures accordingly. Clarifies everything and has a great attitude. Also allows partial retakes on midterms, which is extremely helpful. Midterm difficulty is the same as the examples given in class.
just ok. be prepared to learn most of the content on your own through her recorded lecture prep and the textbook. tests are similar to homework/textbook/worksheets. no curve but able to reassess half the first mt and all of second. talks and does notes fast so could never keep up in lecture which is just answering questions ppl had about the prep
i had an A in 17A and the professor was great and this class nearly broke me. She's evil I think. she talks down to students and this class made me feel so hopeless all quarter do not take her whatever you do
I have mixed feelings about Burke. On one hand she definitely cares a lot about her students, and she goes out of her way to make sure you succeed in class. On the other hand, she creates a lot of menial work for herself and her students, and her lectures are boring and hard to pay attention to. There are serious pros and cons but overall shes fine
expected the absolute worst when I joined this class after seeing her reviews... turns out she isn't that bad. the lecture prep videos/ notes make for great study material and she's very accessible during office hours for help. the tests are straight forward if you understand homework/discussion prblms. (if you took AP Calc BC you'll be good)
terrible, she doesn't teach at all in lectures and is very hard to understand. All of her "lectures" are just videos from the past. It was such a depressing class and I had such terrible experience with the material when being taught by her.
You'll do great if you just focus on doing lecture prep assignments and practicing HW and textbook problems. Questions on the midterms are very fair and easier than disc and the hardest HW and textbook problems. No curve but has MT retakes. Good prof who actually wants kids to learn. 17b is harder than 17a but I did better in this class thx to her.
I HATE HATE HATE this class and her. She teaches to people who understand math and doesn't do much to help those who dont. NO PRACTICE EXAMS so you basically had to redo everything from discussion problems, hw, and lectures. WHO HAS THE TIME FOR THAT?!?! Some topics we didn't even get tested on. I used to love math, now I hate it.
She really is a great teacher as long as you do the lecture prep. Burke also allows you reassess up to 50% of both your midterms so there is an opportunity to learn from mistakes you made and do better. During discussions you are given worksheets to submit with a group each week that really aren't too bad.
i hated 17b so much and she made it even worse. she wasn't that good at teaching but her exams were somewhat fair. she has this weird grading system where she lets u choose among 3 grading options and lets u do "reassessments" rather than a curve. somehow passed by a christmas miracle.
took calc in hs so I was able to review most of the content except for diffeq/linalg. watch her prelectures and do all the problems! make sure you also do the discussion worksheet problems! burke's a p good instructor and notices you if you put in the work. if you show up to class consistently and try your hardest, you will be fine.
Professor Burke is accommodating with deadlines and extensions but overall, I would recommend not taking her especially if you haven't taken calc in high school. She has 3 grading options and reassessments but reassessments are for 3 problems only. The co class doesn't help because Burke has her own methods and is really picky about notation.
I hate 17b. God I hate 17b. Material is just abstract and useless. As far as the Burkito factor, she ayte. She tries to do right by folk bcuz most people don't do well. So, I guess that's cool. Some people love her and that's simply cause they kike the material, but I'm, take this class elsewhere where the professor doesn't try to break you.
She doesn't curve tests, instead she does retakes. The reason her course is so difficult is less because of her teaching and mainly because of the no curve. With no curve, you NEED to know everything which takes TIME. My advice: Drop this or account for the time to study and be prepared and make a good discussion group(+there'sdifferentialequations)
The material for this course IS difficult, but Dr. Burke's inverse classroom style makes this a lot worse. She assigns pre-lecture videos, in which she overcomplicates easy topics, and her lectures only cover examples. I found this method super unhelpful for learning, just wait to take 17b with a diff professor that makes good use of lecture time.
Don't take her! FR! Yes her test reassessments make it possible to get an ok grade in the class but the class itself is so bad. Hard to know if you'll pass because of the grading system, no lectures its just chopped up example vids posted. She just waits for questions and then does a bad job of answering. 17B is hard as is but her teaching sucks.
DONT TAKER HER, that's crazy. attending her lectures is meaningless cuz she wants u to understand EVERYTHING through the textbook, i have no idea what she is talking about during lecture times. If you think I'm exaggerating, go to the textbook and do some exercises. All of her classes are disorganized.
I'm not sure why Burke receives such bad reviews. While she can be a little sassy and strict I found that she explained things pretty well and while I agree that the pre-lecture videos take up a lot of time they actually help a lot. Once I actually started doing the lecture prep after the first midterm I went from a C to an A on the second midterm
Burke runs a very difficult class, but provides an immense amount of online and in-person resources to allow you to succeed. Keep up with lecture prep, make sure to get calc room tutoring, and attend office hours and you should be alright. Her tests are difficult, but she does provide re-test opportunities on both midterms which saved my grade.
I think she is often rated badly because calculus is just difficult. The topics are hard and there is no easy way around that. In reality, the worst part of her class is just that you have to watch lecture videos before class, which is up to an hour of work. Very nice professor, and everything makes sense if you put in the effort.
Trust me, BELIEVE everything everyone writes about this professor. Lectures are pointless unless you want to stare at a board, confused beyond your mind, for an hour. If you take calculus with this woman, be prepared to take on a full-time job + overtime, and did I mention unpaid? It's not worth it. TAKE SOMEONE ELSE, or transfer. Both work.
Burke is a character, quite the personality. She runs a flipped classroom teaching style- read the book before class, submit a requested area for her to review, and that's what she goes over in class. She doesn't curve, but she has 3 dif grading options and you get a chance to retake half of the questions from your midterms afterwards to do better.
Pros: Grading criteria saved me with a B, retake both midterms for a better grade (cannot get a lower one), sets up notes after for you to review immediately Cons: If you skip class she is not for you, confusing grading, strict, won't record lecture if students aren't coming to class, believe the reviews that say 1 or 2, doesn't allow regrades.
The professor is caring and encourages the student to seek help and assistance, but the learning speed is too fast and the course does not offer curve and regrade, the reassessment does not Guarantee to fix your grade, you expect to know and understand all that she teaches earlier, so if you are a slow learner do not take the class
The amount of work is disproportional to what you actually learn. Overcomplicates, under explains, and thinks she is the best source of math knowledge on Earth. Very nice lady, and definitely does have a lot of knowledge, her teaching style just doesnt work for over half the class.
Dr. Burke genuinely wants you to succeed. There's many forms of earning credit and you can pick what you are graded on based on your strengths: group work, test, HW, participation. Test are not hard if you do your HW and you can retake up to half. She has pre-lecture videos so you can review lessons before class. Very accessible. Loved her!
made me want to crash out everytime, her reassesment thing does not work for how many topics 17b has. unhelpful. my worst quarter ever. everyday i hoped i was dreaming that this class was a lie. do not take her.
she spends so much time explaining whatever concept shes teaching but so little on practice problems. i guess thats what the pre-lecture videos are for, but im not watching 3x15 min videos + reading chapters from textbook 3 times a week for a singular class. esp when its a prereq. im currently failing this class; shouldve taken in a diff quarter.
Was Dr Burke a good professor? Yes. Was this also the hardest class I've taken at Davis? Yes. She makes you WORK for your grade, so I would definitely recommend to go to office hours for the class,. She's actually very helpful there! I would also recommend you devote A LOT of time outside of class to study.
Her extra credit was very helpful, and although it wasn't mandatory it really aided my learning in her class. Additionally, she was very accessible during office hours, although she can be a little passive aggressive, she was overall very ready to help her students and answer questions.
she expects you to give 12-16hrs a week JUST for this one class, there is NO study guides ("just study everything we learned in lecture" wow so helpful!), there is NO curve (even though it's a really difficult course to begin with with), and the different "grading options" are just a no; it doesnt do anything to boost ur grade.
I'm the type of person who likes most all profs. unless they are unreasonable or unfair. I did not like Burke at all. The way she teaches is so confusing; I've only "learned" stuff through practice problems that I did on my own. There is so much outside work you have to do just to get a bare minimum passing grade. worst class + prof combo ever
Calc 2 is difficult, she is of no help, the math lab will be the only way to get it, maybe the hardest and worst class I've taken, she couldn't care less if you pass or fail. It's good practice for the real word in the sense your going to meet toxic people on the job and have to get things done. This prof is toxic and her class well make you sick
had for two classes, and teaching is poor. The weekly expectations feel overwhelming, and confusing grading—if you understand the material, you can pass easily with no curve. I had a great experience with 17A(diff prof)that made me love math, but now I don't feel the same. She has potential, but needs to focus more on her students' needs. plz avoid
Tough grader, removing points for not explicitly stating power rule yet using it correctly. But she's not bad as a lecturer, class is super difficult, maybe more than it should be. Take as a second choice, maybe third.
i can't with her... she has made this course a 1000x worse than it needs to be. i hate it all of it. she'll make impossible tests on purpose and make it seem like you can earn back points through the reassesssments even tho you really don't. so good luck, but i HATE her.
I was nervous because of the ratings, but they turned out to be wrong. My M2 grade went from an F to an A. She taught well, always provided problems, and explicitly mentioned that she looks at homework and textbooks problems when writing exams. Math is hard so you need to practice. If an English major could do well in this class, so can you.
Burke was an alright teacher. I do not understand why people have such a terrible rating on her. She is very average teacher with test corrections which helps bring up your grade. Received a 85, 60, and 75 on the midterms, but did well on the test corrections to receive an A- in the course. Do the test corrections and all you CE points.
Very bad at meaningful lectures. I learnt most material through the textbook or online. 2 Midterms + Final. She offers a bunch of gimmicks to "help" improve your grade, such as reassessments, Class Engagement Points, and 3 different grading options, but none of them truly helped. Group Work during discussion is mandatory. This class is NOT curved.
Teaches integrals & difeq's fine, makes linear algebra confusing. Lecture pacing is weird, overcomplicates simple concepts, rushes over difficult ones. Wish she would give practice exams, but tests are really easy. No curve but just lock in with self study (overloaded 17b curriculum) and you'll be ok. I don't understand the 1's though shes alright
This class was kind of a whirlwind for me. I REALLY thought I was about to fail, but the reassessment section on MT2 took me from a 33% to 83%. Dr. Burke definitely cares and is a solid teacher (especially during office hours or 1on1) but the class structure is a bit unusual. If you can keep up with lots and lots of assignments, you'll be ok.
Did not enjoy her teaching style at all, lecture was basically optional bc of lecture prep assignments. Little/no partial credit on exams, but offered reassessment opportunities for both midterms, which was a little helpful? Would not recommend if you prefer more of a hands-on teaching style
Despite the numerous other assignments Burke assigns, your grade is really just test dependent; which would be fine if she actually provided practice for her exams and coherent lectures but she doesn't. She offers no curve but "reassessments" that are harder than the actual midterms, making getting points back even more difficult. Don't take her.
she's ok. lectures are basically optional, YouTube videos will teach you better. her reassessments are supposed to be so helpful but they're more difficult than the actual midterm but they do slightly help. she just thinks she's an amazing professor when she's mediocre. avoid if possible. don't fall behind.
Retakes for both midterms exactly like exams, and one retake is half of the final. Definitely hard but doable. You need outside resources for this class, go to her office hours and go to AATC tutoring. Once you fall behind it's hell getting caught up. She's not hard, 17B is. It's the hardest of the 17 series but Burke's retakes help, but no curve:(
Lectures - useless. You get to lecture and she asks "so what don't we understand?" - you never taught the material in the first place... Tests - she offers reassessment because if she didn't 80% of the class would flunk. For people who are naturally gifted at math you will be fine you should be fine, but for the rest of us (85%) vaya con dios.
She gives you 3 grading options to choose from - what you choose decides the amount of homework you'll have. Utilize her office hours, she makes time for her students. Exams were challenging, but if you prepare you'll do fine. Offers reassessments for tests. Lectures are made up of lots of example problems.
There is no teaching just self learning. People who like her probably like to study on their own and learn. I DID NOT.
Do not listen to the haters Dr Burke is the sweetest prof on the planet this is just a hard class
I didn't take AP Calc in high school, nor quick with math. She does lecture and explain thoughtfully. It won't be a self-taught class if you take advantage of her OH on top of going to lecture! Don't skip her lectures. Her class is not easy A, but hard work will pay off. Focus on listening during her lectures, and jot down key concepts only.
Dr. Burke is a caring person, but not an effective professor for a difficult, painful class. Her videos and lectures were pretty good, but even when I understood the material, her exams felt unfairly hard and too fast-paced. Prepare to self-study and do lots of practice problems. Her exam retake policy (half the questions can be redone) is helpful.
don't do it bro. unsave her class from your schedule builder right now. it is NOT worth it. you will NOT beat the odds. she does NOT curve. take it another quarter or over the summer if you have to.
Don't like
This class is not easy to succeed in without extensive textbook reading and studying, especially if you didn't take AP calculus. Dr Burke is very knowledgeable but is not always concise or thorough with her explanations. She is very accommodating and quick to respond to any emails. The class engagement points and test reassessments are encouraging.
This was a super hard class and it shouldn't be! If you have the option to take Dr. Tav instead, take him!! Burke offers reassessments for tests but they didn't help me at all. She doesn't prepare students for exams well and only gives a vague guideline of what you should do (~50 recommended textbook practice problems per test). Please don't.
Professor Burke is so kind and so caring towards her students. She has office hours after every lecture and is one of the most motivating instructors that I have had thus far. Her exams match the difficulty level of the in class examples and the homework is typically much more difficult than her actual exams.
Dr. Burke is one of the best professors I have had. She gives you so many resources to take advantage of in order to do well in her class. I would take her class again every quarter if I could. The material is still difficult, but it is an easy class if you take advantage of everything Burke gives you to prepare.
She gives you three different options to weigh your grades. As a result you don't get to see your grades until after finals are graded which I found frustrating. As for the class itself, Its super fast paced. Tests are only 30 minutes, cause she has reassessments after which aren't really helpful imo
her lectures made math more confusing than it already is. found myself teaching from the textbook after every lecture due to her inability to teach. class average on the first text was a 40%. test retakes were nice but took me to the second test to understand how to correctly do them. 3 midterms and 1 final. get to choose your grading option.
I was worried about taking the class when I saw the reviews but Burke was amazing. Gives grading options, attendance was mandatory but only 4% and required about 2/3 attendance for 100%. Her exams weren't necessarily easy but all the questions were very similar to lecture and there wasn't a single "curveball" all quarter. Very sweet/helpful in OH.
