Super nice guy, abhorrent professor. Exams are impossible. Gives unclear instructions (for everything, not just exams) which are very wordy. In addition, he unnecessarily tries to trick you on exams for no reason. Turns a fun and engaging class into a nightmare. It's one thing if you are lazy another if the class is impossible. Please stay away.
Wouldn't wish him on the worst person. Tests aren't understandable or possible. Everyone fails everything and he couldn't care less
Nice guy. He doesn't realize how horrible he is as a professor. Has unreasonable expectations for students and assigns projects with very little direction that count towards a large portion of your grade. Tests are too long to finish in class and he isn't willing to accept that it's his fault. Don't take him if you can avoid it.
DO NOT TAKE HIM. worst professor I have had at UM. Tests are impossible and he legitimately laughs at our mistakes while lecturing. Whole class asks him about his impossible grading and he ignores it. Extra credit got taken away as soon as people started to pass because it was "too easy". Change majors before getting him as a professor.
has good intentions and is willing to work with you, but his motto is if one student is able to do something then all of his students should be able to do it too. completely unrealistic expectations and tests seem completely foreign compared to the practice material. Considering this is a 100 level course it doesn't add up
Prof. Murphy genuinely wants his students to learn Excel & Tableau. His exams are more than tough (needs clearer instructions), but that is how you learn material that is used outside of college. He sees the students who care, participate in class and show some interest. Not an easy A, but possible. He is always willing to help if you just ask.
Amazing professor, he's clearly passionate about the subject. He always is willing to re-do steps on lectures, and makes sure we understand the subjects. HOWEVER, when it comes to testing, his expectations are higher than what the majority of students are able to handle. Leaving many of us to take grade penalties for extra time.
Professor Murphy as a person is great, but it doesn't help that he is inconsiderate when it comes to grading. As per both exams taken in the class, we were expected to finish both in 55 minutes, which he ended up having to give resubmissions for considering how bad class grades were. Don't take this class and save yourself from this huge burden.
I have scored above a 94 on 12 assignments so far in the class, and Professor Murphy's inability to properly assess students with a fair exam has sent my grade to a C average because I have scored a 70 on both of the exams, which were so difficult he had to allow for resubmissions. Don't take this class. Poor experience and UM should be ashamed.
AVOID THIS PROFESSOR AT ALL COSTS. Has made my life this semester a living hell and has no consideration for students who don't understand the material. I'm still yet to say that I feel comfortable with excel and we already moved on from that platform in class. If he doesn't curve grades, more than half the class will end with C's and few with B's.
I have found myself punching the everliving life out of my wall trying to figure what the hell I am supposed to be even be doing. His tests are harder to understand then all the digits of pi. He thinks we can make charts of the entire stock market in one 50 minute test. He said and I rephrase,You have the ability to solve this by never considering
Never in my life have I ever been so upset with the caliber of professor I ended up with for this course. I don't think I can say I feel comfortable using Excel even after I pass this class. If Murphy is your only option as a professor, I suggest waiting until next semester and taking the class with someone else.
I've done mediocre in this class but I do have to say most of the assignments in this class don't reflect any of the work we have done on exams. 2 exams on assignments we didn't learn + I had to rely on online tutors for most of my answers. I wouldn't recommend taking this class if you're not tech savvy and don't want your GPA to go down the drain.
Professor Murphy is one of the nicest professors I've ever had and is always happy to help his students achieve better grades. However, when you feel you understand the material in class and are ready for the test he gives out the hardest tests known to man. He expects all of his students to be Excel professionals and to love making spreadsheets.
His exams were an insane amount of work for a very little time limit, and I would say 90% of the class did not complete the exam on time. I got 70s on both exams even tho I passed the Excel Expert certification with 900s/1000. For the Tableau part, 0/0. He literally gives zero instruction and excepts us to be like wizards or something. No help. 000
He will give a ton of work for a 100 level class. He loves his class, but he gives the hard test and hard projects. If you hate yourself, then go for him.
Ok so he's definitely nice guy but an extremely unfair/unrealistic professor. The exams he gives out are so extensive that I don't even know where to begin. He also makes the directions for everything so confusing... he could find a way to make the directions for simply writing your name the hardest thing in the world. And he will. For NO reason.
Im here to defend Mr. Murphy. He is such a nice guy so caring and kind, hes pretty approachable and willing to help all students if he sees an interest in you. Its true that the amount of work is insanely extensive. No one finish his tests in time and tableau projects took forever. But he gave everyone a retry for both tests and gave us 3 days.
If you want to spend the entire semester fighting for your life, go for his class. He honestly enjoys giving insanely hard exams that no one finishes as well as crazy projects. He is a nice person, but his ability to teach and to help students is a hard NO. I wouldn't suggest..
I wish I had taken this class freshman year. This has been by far one of the most useful classes I have taken and is applicable to almost everything. Do not expect to sit in class and be able to ace exams. You will have to put in the time outside of class to get proficient. He offers multiple opportunities for extra credit.. Take Them!
Professor Murphy is one of the best professors at UM. He is passionate and very knowledgable about the topics that he teaches. His tests & projects will require you to study but he's available to talk during class or after to make sure we are prepared. He's always willing to help & has extra credit opportunities to make sure we succeed in his class
Professor Murphy is the worst professor I've ever had. He's a nice guy, but he rushes through VERY complicated material, is very unhelpful when answering questions, and does not like repeating himself, even when the entire class doesn't understand the content. People literally cry in his classes. For your own wellbeing and grade, DO NOT take him!
the absolute WORST professor I have ever had. He moves at supersonic speed and if you have a question he gets confused why you are confused. He thinks everyone is an expert in the class even though majority have never used Excel this in depth. He needs to be fired or at least take a look at all these reviews because something is seriously wrong.
I would not recommend this professor. He is a nice person, and he knows what he's doing, but his tests are difficult and sometimes put things on there that we didn't go over. He sometimes assigns spontaneous projects and expects students to know how to do them.
Such a sweetheart! He cares about his students so much and truly wants to hear about your weekend and make sure your not overwhelmed. For the tests, ya they are hard but so worth it. Go to class and you will be fine. He gives you so many chances with retakes and certifications to get your grade up. He is literally always available for extra help.
Amazing professor. Curves pretty much everything and doesn't let pretty much anyone fail any exam, project, etc. He is very approachable and is super caring. Would take again million times
Great professor. He really cares about his students and will do his best to not let anyone fail. Excel tests are tough but he is willing to give extra time to complete them. Some group excel work and one group tableau project. Would take this professor again!
Professor Murphy is extremely nice and caring, but his teaching skills are far from excusable. He has extremely unrealistic expectations for his students. He immediately expects everyone to be experts in whatever software we're using. Some assignments are very spontaneous, even when we are just learning how to use the software. Would not recommend.
The content and some of the exams can be difficult, but he is always very accessible to get help with literally anything. He zoomed me while he was in the car and helped me set up all of the software for the class. There were a couple of times that his projects were annoying, but he will help you and does his best to make sure everyone passes.
Professor Murphy was an extremely kind and helpful teacher. He usually was a very kind grader, and let you work on the tests outside of class for some extra points. That being said, sometimes he was very hard to understand, and he went through the content very quickly.
Whoever is rating this professor poorly didn't pay attention in class. He is the kindest person I have ever met. Very understanding, and host hour long reviews for his students if they want to come. The class is hard, there is no easy way to learn it...that being said I don't know another professor that could explain it as well as he does.
Krishna has been in my top 3 favorite professors at this school due to his objectively kind/caring personality and evident passion for the course. BUT I didn't like him at first. We developed a positive relationship through LOTS of office hours/communication outside of class, but without immense extra effort, you will be discouraged and upset.
Just Don't. You will not pass the exams.
This is a difficult class, and there is no way around that. I really enjoyed this class because of the professor. You will need to work for your grade. Show up to class, pay attention to his lectures and you're going to do well. Also, go to his office hours. He is the goat
Tests are impossible to pass, goes so fast in class you will not be able to keep up. 100% do not take.
he is a nice and caring guy. However, he moves at a crazy speed. A speed that if you are trying to learn anything, you won't. I look down at my computer to type something in, and he is already 6 steps ahead of me. Cares a lot about the class, but not a teacher. Miami should look into both professors for this subject, cause they both suck.
This class should not be for beginners because the learning curve kicks in really quick. I had to hire a tutor in order to salvage a decent grade. A good grade will involve you going to office hour consistently. The tests are incredibly long and unclear at points. Deciphering what is asked is a good portion of the difficulty. Take other professor.
I took this class in the fall of 2021, and still think about how bad this class was. Prepare to try to keep up with him because he goes really fast during his excel lectures. He is willing to meet with students and help them 1 on 1 if you go to office hours but trust me when I say that you WILL NOT PASS if you don't go to meet with him.
I tell everyone to take this professor because he truly wants the best for his students. Go to office hours and he will give you a good grade. The first exam is very hard but generously curved.
He says he doesn't curve, but he really does. He makes it very hard to fail tests and the class overall. That being said, this is a hard course, and after almost everything he teaches he'll say "most of you will get points of for this on the test" which can be discouraging. However, if you talk and ask him questions, he will help you out.
Prof. Murphy was always available to students after classes and not just before exams. His first exam is challenging but curved. Attend each class, participate, and ask questions; this will help you learn the concepts as the pace is really fast. He is a wonderful professor that genuinely cares about your success!
This guy is the worst explainer ever. He assigns projects and doesn't teach you how to do them whatsoever and points you to his Youtube channel. Tries to be nice, but no clue how he is a professor with the pace he zooms through material. Sets up exams on purpose for students to fail "You're all failing this!!" Not a prof that I would rec taking...
These reviews are written by slackers or people who are slow. Kris is the best teacher at this school. He shows interest in his students and helps you with any question you may have. He is a super nice guy and genuinely makes me want to come to class. Course is 2 tests and a project. Pay attention, follow along in class and you will be fine.
Best professor hands down. He will always ensure students are caught up and helps them with everything. However, you must go to class as it is a lecture-heavy class. If you go to class and ask questions, you will be fine. Definitely one of the most genuine and intelligent professors I have had. No homework but don't slack off.
Need to attend lectures.
AVOID THIS GUY AT ALL COSTS.
Understand this is already an inherently difficult course. You must attend class or you will not succeed. He is a very nice guy but the exams are extremely difficult because it is all an application of what you learn in class but at maximum difficulty.
Provides zero instruction on any assignment, especially the group project at the end of the semester. Is very nice, but a terrible professor. The exams are hard and confusing, but if you practice a lot you can do well. The group project is given with zero instruction or help. He says to go to office hours, but they're always packed and unhelpful.
A very nice guy I will admit, but truly the worst professor I have ever had I hate him so much I do not even have words to express it. He gives absolutely no guidance on any assignment, and the exams are quite literally IMPOSSIBLE. He is very very smart, but too smart to teach. He cannot comprehend that students need explanation. Absolute nightmare
Wouldn't recommend taking this class unless you're comfortable w/ Excel & Tableau. First half of class is Excel and the tests are impossible to finish. He tells students they will end up in "C-ville" when they are confused on material. Group project has little guidance, never properly taught to use Tableau. Is very caring but not good explainer
This class got me so f-ed up im starting to enjoy the simple things in life.
I am counting down the days of this class because WOW this class made me want to end it. Exams are on maximum difficulty and the group project has no directions the best part is the public humiliation in front of the class every week of what is wrong with your project.
Prof Murphy is an outgoing guy. He's often got a smile on his face and he loves what he does. HOWEVER, his tests are very difficult with unclear instructions that are unlike any of the case problems from the textbook. The exams are laughably more challenging than the coursework. Class is mandatory because you must turn in your work done in class.
This is generally a hard class if you do not know anything about excel, however it is obvious Murphy loves what he does. The tests are hard but build a relationship with him and he will be willing to let you try and earn some points back. he is a happy guy, always comes excited and cares about people as long as you are respectful. great guy
amazing guy---happy, outgoing, kind. HOWEVER, the tests are unnecessarily hard with unclear instructions. prepare to study at least a week for both of the exams. the other teacher is much easier...but take Murphy if you want to interact with a great man who is passionate about data analytics.
This is definitely one of the most difficult business classes. Professor Murphy is very kind and caring but makes the tests extremely difficult and much harder than the material presented in class. The project is also difficult but he does set the average grade high.
Listen ... all these bad reviews are written by slow people. If you show up and follow along in class, you won't have issues. Don't expect to skip a bunch of classes and just understand everything. It is worth taking him to become functional in excel, not just take a class to pass. Don't take the advice of the slow ones.
This was a difficult class, and part of that was because of the difficulty of Prof Murphy's exams. They are intentionally very difficult and he will curve heavily. The group project has no guidelines really but not difficult. He is a very nice guy and in class was entertaining but he can be very difficult but you will learn to excel.
He is clearly very knowledgable on the subject he teaches, but he is a horrible professor. The material is fairly simple, but he goes to fast for anyone to follow along. He preaches about being as efficient and as fast as possible, but, due to his speed, much of the class time is devoted to answering redundant questions.
You'll read reviews and think maybe I can take him... I am telling you now for your own sake take the other teacher. He is a nice guy, makes jokes, etc, but the exams are extremely difficult. Got a C- on exam 1 and grinded exam 2 and project, finished with an A-. It is possible to do well even after literally just putting your name on the first exam
Dr. Murphy is a great guy with engaging lectures. Extremely knowledgable in subject field and will help you in class on work. Tests are designed to be extremely hard but curve is heavy. You can think you failed an exam and get an A. TAKE MURPHY
Professor Murphy is a really nice person, but the class is pretty difficult. If you put in the effort to make a connection with him, then the class will be much better. The first exam is very difficult, but you can make up for it with exam 2 and the big group project at the end. I would take again.
While Professor Murphy is tough for sure, if you attend class and participate you will quickly grow to really like him. Exams are really tough, make sure you know everything on the study guides and practice exams. But especially towards the end of the semester the class becomes really chill and you grow to start enjoying coming to class.
Great class! Always looked forward to going to this class. Dr. Murphy is a great guy and makes class fun. If you work hard and attend class, you will do great! No homework outside of class.
Please, if you have any ounce of self respect and care, take the other professor that teaches this class. I'm currently balding and what little hair I have left is turning grey because of his unclear instructions and rage-inducing work.
The only professor I have EVER seen get enjoyment out of watching students fail and be stressed. He thinks its funny to watch students not know how to use excel when he barely teaches it (runs through examples too fast). Also chooses clear favorites.
The 2 tests in this class are brutal and are likely the reason why so many people don't like Murphy. However, there is a massive curve on them and you are given plenty of resources to prepare- videos, practice exams, cases. You can't finesse anything, just lock in during class, prepare well for the tests, and make sure you have a competent group.
dr murphy is a good teacher, if you took YEARS of excel. he moves WAY too fast no one in the class can keep up with him. he claims that the test are almost impossible to finish when they are already impossible. Presentation can help your grade but be prepared to spend hours in his office trying to figure it out. AVOID IF YOU CAN
This professor is kind and grades generously. You might worry about your test performance, but the final scores are way higher than expected. However, the class itself is challenging, especially if you're not already comfortable with Excel. He moves through material quickly, which can make it hard to keep up
The class is challenging because so few people have used excel in hs but if you go to class, pay attention, and ask questions, he's a very genuine and caring professor who will help you. The exams are very challenging, but everyone ends with a higher grade than they think they got (since no one finishes). Great guy/professor. Highly recommend. Goat
Dont take, so many better ones
Such a nice guy, but the class is extremely hard, especially if you have no excel experiences. The tests are impossible to complete and he moves very fast during class. It is very easy to fall behind. He will help you if you need it but this class is very difficult and would not recommend it.
Murphy is a great guy, he's very caring and kind, but his class is tough to teach. It's an Excel and Tableau class, so it has its difficulties. He blesses on the tests since most people don't finish and struggle. He takes the final project very seriously, but as long as you put in the time, you will be fine.
Introduce yourself and engage. He's very sweet and helpful. Two exams: just practice a lot and don't stress. The final project seems scary but isn't bad. Use his videos to make graphs and split group work fairly. Book tutoring with a former student because he is always busy. Cases are easy points, just follow instructions.
i dont know what he is saying ever
Goes 1 million miles an hour and does not slow down. Does the excel as fast as he possibly can and is confused as to why you can't keep up. This class blows.
Great guy and professor. You should get some Excel knowledge before BUS 150 with any professor. It is hard but if you know Excel decently before coming to class you will get an A.
This guy is the nicest professor I have ever met. His class is challenging but is probably the most useful class I have ever taken. Make sure to participate and ask questions. You get in what you put out in the class.
Great teacher but this is a very hard and complex class that moves very fast regardless of teacher. Uses Excel and Tableau and is very good for the resume.
He has a lot of bad reviews but don't listen to them. He's actually a really funny and smart guy and genuinely wants you to do well. As long follow along in class and lock in for 50 minutes you'll be fine. Pick decent and reliable people for the tableau project at the end of the semester and you shouldn't really have any issues.
I loved Professor Murphy. I have a small computer science background, which made this class quite easy. He cares for all of his students. If you just go to class and pay attention, you'll be fine.
Prof Murphy is honestly a great professor. I was hesitant to take him when I saw the reviews, but after taking his class, he should have a much higher rating. If you go to class and just pay attention and do your best to understand you will almost guarantee an A on the exams, and the project is way easier than it seems. He is a very easy grader.
