Professor Nishida has no problem going over a topic a second time if you don't understand. Its very obvious that she has a big love for chemistry and it makes the class way more enjoyable! If it is your first time taking chemistry be sure to go to the TA office hours the second you feel lost, this class goes at quick pace.
Professor Nishida is incredibly sweet and helpful. She genuinely wants all students to develop an understanding for chemistry and is more than willing to work with you to help you understand. I was enrolled in a different CHEM 101 lecture, but would come to her class because she was excellent at explaining the topics.
I'm sure she's great for 101 but for chem 106 she makes it way harder than it needs to be. The exams have more questions than you have time to answer and she added in short answer questions to an already long and grueling exam. I really like her but her exams are far harder than any other chem professor for this class.
She was terrible at explaining things and wasn't good at answering questions. She was rude when approached outside of class and her lectures were EXTREMELY dry. Also, the tests were way harder than any questions or examples that were done in class. I highly recommend not taking her class if at all possible.
Krista has a good heart but her lectures aren't good at all. You get around four homework assignments every week that can vary from ten minutes to two hours. If you don't understand the material, too bad, every homework assignment and lab is due at 7:00 AM and the material are things that aren't even covered until lecture the next day. Horrible!
The lectures for this class are very dry and hard to stay tuned in to, and there is a ton of homework. On top of the pre and post labs, there are around four assignments a week, and the reading assignments are on the material we haven't even learned yet which gets really frustrating. Would not recommend this class.
This class was awful. There is a ton of homework all the time, everyday. You have to study hard for tests or you wont do well. Lectures are long and boring.
She really doesn't set clear expectations of what is on the test. Her tests were never like what she said they would be, and so they were very hard. There are in-class learning catalytics everyday, so you have to attend class. She was funny and nice, but sort of condescending in the fact that she thought we should just magically understand.
Professor Nishida is clear and patient with her lectures, allowing time for questions and frequently checks in on her students. Attendance isn't mandatory but those who don't put in the time to read and attend lectures will struggle with the class. For those who do, the class is much easier. Lots of extra credit is offered on tests and assignments.
Professor Nishida is a great choice for Chem 105. There were three different lectures throughout the day and she did not care which of them you attended. She is great at explaining concepts and cares for student's understanding. Do not be afraid to go up and ask her questions after lecture or during office hours. Homework due every Mon, wed, & Fri.
She's very personable and funny. She assigns a long weekly homework as well as three short assignments before each lecture. The sheer volume can get out of hand, and the short ones are about the topic you'll cover next lecture so it can get real confusing. Her lectures are clear but short, so if you need an abundance of examples you may struggle.
Chem 105 was super easy. I received an A in that class while putting in minimal work. I have put much more time and effort into Chem 106, and nothing I do can prepare me for the tests. Tests were impossibly difficult. Class averages for the last 2 tests were in the 40s. Prof was okay but she goes quick. Many of my peers have dropped the class.
The tests are impossible to get a decent grade on. No matter how hard I studied or what different methods I used, I never got past a C- on a test. Even the smartest people in the class were hanging on for dear life trying to get through her tests. Averages were always in the 50s so prepare to feel like a failure along with everyone else. Get out.
Nishida is a great person a fun professor. However, her tests are insanely hard. This class crams so much into one semester that you must do your homework and remain caught up on your own to be prepared for the exams. The way this class is structured allows you to fail every exam and still get a B in the class though. So much extra credit.
The tests for this class were insanely hard. No matter how much you studied they were nearly impossible to get a decent grade on. I think my highest test score was a 50. There was so much material crammed into the semester, I honestly didnt learn much. Ive never been so fearful of fail a class in my life. Chem 106 is WAY too hard.
Content is gone through very quickly, but we got worksheets in tutorial that had practice problems very similar to problems on the exams. Also, Dr. Nishida hosts review sessions and posts them online. The only complaint I could think of is that she's often late to 8 am lecture but it honestly just added to the charm of the class.
Solid choice. Really thorough in lectures, posts all slides, gives tons of drops and a few little bonuses throughout the year to boost
Nishida is nice and explains things very well. Chem 105 is A LOT of information on the exams and they dont provide a study guide or old exams, so get ready to study. But the exams arent weighted and there 16 extra credit points on each exam.
Nishida is probably the worst teacher I have ever had. She blamed the students for failing even though she teaches stuff that is unimportant and barely touches on the important things. She doesnt care about what she is teaching, and doesnt care what score you get (even if it is an unfair grade). She doesnt take attendance but class is important.
Krista begins the year with decent lectures, but then they get progressively worse as the semester goes on. Her explanations are often unclear and she can be very rude to students when they ask questions during lecture and makes them feel stupid. Homework is usually easy, but exams are ridiculously difficult. Lectures don't line up with homework
She used basic examples to teach us the material. ALEKS didnt correlate with the teaching, so reading the textbook was important.
The most rigid, rude, and uncaring professor I've had the misfortune of having. Show up to her office hours with legitimate questions? Prepare to be berated.
Worst professor have had at WSU. SO rude and her grading criteria makes no sense.
With chemistry is that the grading criteria is department based. So all of the rating of profs blame them for chem being a difficult class when they have no control over it. Tests dont effect grades as much as other classes. Nishida gives solid lectures that will help. But when it comes to getting a good grade you need to work outside class.
Nishida is quite kind, though some of her policies are a bit harsh. The exams are ridiculously hard. I spent weeks studying and never got higher than an 84. The examples in lecture, on ALEKS, in lab, and on the exams are all completely different and difficult to correlate together.
As others have said, the tests don't align with the homework or even lectures to an extent. not so much for exam 1 or 2, but exam 3 which is why the class average was 50%. Did not curve this... she also doesn't seem to appreciate questions. Dropped her class and took it with finnegan, he's much better. Got an A from him.
VERY rude and uncompromising! Doesn't care about students mental health and consistently refuses to answer emails. Her exams cover very little lecture material and she will degrade you in front of the class if you ask any questions. I was stuck taking her for 105 as well. RUN!
This is a hard class. While I dont care for chem in the slightest, nishida was accessible and helped when needed. Aleks is too much but I feel like the class isnt about he information because honestly Ill never use it, but more about the process of learning. I am a better student coming out of this class
The tests are incredibly difficult, and Aleks is a pain in the ass. But Nishida is very nice, I like her lectures. The chem department at this school is whack though, if you can take chem elsewhere DO IT. I've taken 3 chem classes at this school with different professors and it's so poorly structured. Class averages on exams are usually a 40-50%.
This is a tough class especially considering it's mostly freshman who take it. Nishida was very thorough in her lectures and provided many resources for us outside of class. Bottom line is, you have to put in the hours to succeed in this class and she won't just hand you an A for showing up. She will try her hardest to get you there though.
Tests are nothing like the homework. She can be kind of rude sometimes. Aleks is your worst enemy, focus as much as possible on getting correct answers on the first knowledge test that will determine how you do for the remainder of the aleks homework. Checks stuff posted on chegg like a hawk, so don't be dumb
Dr. Nishida was amazing. She is passionate about chemistry. With how the class is structured, you can score very poorly on all the exams, and still get an A or B in the class. I highly recommend taking her chem courses.
For some reason this professor feels like she is above answering student's questions if they are not important enough or she feels as if the student should be able to find the answer elsewhere. I like chem and did not mind having to take this class but she makes it unbearable.
I almost don't have words for my experience. She was rude, uncaring, and berated students and the class for asking questions or struggling. Her tests are nothing like what she teaches you and when my class got a 50 something average on the exam she berated us about how lazy our generation is and how we just don't know how to study.
If you can find a different chem professor, DO IT. There is so much homework and reading that is completely irrelevant to the exams and they are incredibly difficult. Chem is a hard class as is and with school being online it makes it that much harder. She makes you feel really dumb for asking questions and calls you out in front of the class.
A lot of people give her criticism, but I think she is still a good professor. Asking her questions is a bit difficult and she isn't the nicest to criticism, but I feel like a lot of people use her as a target for their own frustrations. If you ACTUALLY PUT IN EFFORT INTO THE COURSE, you will be FINE. You can actually learn a lot from this class.
Will not accommodate to you at all. Does not understand that were in a pandemic (were all struggling still and she doesnt get that) She gives out tons of homework especially during exam week and no study guides. I havent even finished this semester and this has been one of the worst teachers Ive had. WSU hire better chem professors.
Nishida explains concepts well but it is up to you to stay on top of lecture, lab, assignments, etc. Exams are not too hard and there is a lot of extra credit offered throughout the semester. Chem is difficult so do not expect an easy class if you need extra help use TA office hours. If you do not have a strong chemistry background take 103 first.
Thoroughly read the syllabus, assignment deadlines are at odd times so dont miss them. Remember prelab quiz. Email response are slow if you have question try talking to a TA, or attend office hours. Don't understand a ALEKS question press the explanation button or example. Do lab reports with a group it takes awhile and it makes the process easier
I didn't do a whole lot of my work in this class and it caught up to me (no late work). But I feel like if you just stay on top of all the work and do ok on tests you'd get a solid B. The prof would get in bad moods sometimes and made our final 10x harder than it should be (even to my friends who did all their work) but ended up curving it.
Dr. Nishida is the best professor so far. Shes so cool in every Wednesday live lecture. Her exams are hard, but she will curve some of them. And she gives lots of extra credits too. Her office hour might be awkward, so try to go TAs office hour instead. Lots of ALEKS homework tho.
She is super cool as a person but the class is pretty hard. This is my second time taking chem and she is definitely better than the last professor I had.
Professor Nishida was NOT organized. Lectures were frequently off-topic, and she often taught topics incorrectly. That's right, she told us things that were wrong and then said "Oh, just forget about that." Bad class, worse with zoom. Uses ALEKS too, which everyone hates. Why do so many people fail this class? You have to teach yourself the topics.
Idk how she is for 105, but for 101 she has been great IMHO. Wednesdays live lectures(make sure to get that credit), i struggled the most with the quizzes, some weird questions were asked even after studying a ton. Other than that its been good, quite a bit of work but if you just keep up its no big deal. Exams were okay, Recommend class 100%
This professor was not a helpful part of the class. We learned from ALEKS assignments and readings, while the lectures were reflective of those concepts and hard to follow. Furthermore, the limited communication I had with her was rude and disrespectful. She gives no grace for anything. Would never take a course with this teacher again.
Did not care or make an effort for struggling students asking for help. Lecture never lined up with homework, so a lot of teaching yourself. Tests are extremely hard, I think the average was high D's. Lots and lots of homework, however, she stuck to the syllabus due dates so you can get ahead at the beginning. Wouldn't necessarily take her again.
So many things due, about 4 deadlines a week and no late passes whatsoever. Classes very boring and difficult to learn anything. Exams get progressively harder; I suggest you make friends with people good at chem if you want to pass.
Chill personality, cat lover, but definitely has a mean-rude strike. She was available during office hrs, but they could quickly become awkward if you doesn't like you. Lots of ALEKS hw that didn't align with class material, only vague familiarity. Tips: for ALEKS watch Chem Lab, Webster, Tony St John on YouTube; go to TA office hrs for lab help!
Gives tons of homework and assignments which dont even relate to the readings or lectures. So unless you already know everything about Chem you either need to find a way to self teach or youre SOL.
Ive taken a basic chem course that didnt transfer to WSU and got an A and it was fun. Her teaching, lectures, and exams are lazy and pathetic. Shes horrible at teaching and achieves nothing within the first 30 min of class. She has changed the syllabus 5 times and vital information will be missing on her canvas. Chem is not hard but she makes it
The amount of homework may feel overwhelming. Compared to my other classes, I received the most amount of homework from this class. The class may be a struggle for some but, I think that she is a great professor overall. She offers help to those who ask for it.
So for context I have taken chem 105 previously at another college and my credit didnt transfer so I already know the majority of the material. Th class averages for the exams and all the other chem exams for the other classes were about 55% and lower. I have As in all my other chem and science classes. Dont take nishida if you want a good GPA
I dont even know how this woman still has a job. Our class averages for our exams were all barley passing or failing. She is a lazy and pathetic teacher. We have to learn everything by ourselves with homework and through our text book which clearly doesnt work. She never responds to emails and if she does youre lucky to get a 2 word answer.
Dr. Nishida's exams are extremely hard and not at all relevant to what was learned in class. Take this class if you like teaching yourself and you're willing to see your GPA get destroyed.
She is a really nice person easy to talk to but this class is so hard. I am a pretty good student, go to all lectures, do all the homework, do all the labs and other right ups but still manage to not do good on exams. Exams are really hard to say the least. There is also way to much homework some of which we dont even learn in lecture.
If you like staying up until 12 am most days doing homework, like seeing your hard earned Gpa drop like a bowling ball, like receiving 50% on your exams because some material on the test wasnt even covered, and have photographic memory for the 200 different equations that might be on the exam, then this class is for you.
Just got our Exam 2 scores back and the class average was a 48. Dr. Nishida said said it was the worst exam 2 score that she has ever seen while teaching, but she refused to curve it. She wondered "what we were all doing" instead of looking at the way she teaches. Avoid this class at all costs
Dr. Nishida assigns A LOT of Aleks & NO late work, curves, or extensions. She makes you feel stupid for asking questions, doesn't answer emails, and is so passive aggressive. I honestly don't know how she has a job because everyone I know has said this in course evaluations. I managed to get an A but was up til midnight every night--don't recommend
Chem 105 is a prereq for so many other classes, so if you want to pass I HIGHLY recommend taking it with a different professor. I know several people who had to retake this class multiple times because of her tough grading and refusal to curve grades or accept any late work (even a minute late). Be prepared to use Khan academy and teach yourself
I am a first year student going into mechanical enginerering and this class single handedely takes up 80% of my workload. every tuesday there is SO MUCH HOMEWORK DUE. Theres reading before each lecture due aswell. And to top it all off you still need to go to lab every week and write a post lab report due at the end of the week. DO NOT TAKE THIS
I've attended every lecture, done all the homework, and I just feel defeated. If you can weasel your way out of this class, do it. I've taken many gen-ed college chem classes before and this is by far the worst planned course schedule I've seen, not to mention the horrible exams. Don't take this class if you don't have to.
Getting a good TA is important in this class as a lot of credit comes from labs unfortunately. Nishida herself is really clear and concise in her explanations and makes tough concepts make sense. Overall however the class is extremely hard, the exam averages are usually around 50% but you can still get a high grade doing the homework.
Awful professor most exams had a way below failing average and blamed us. Rude to student and takes no advice. Multiple complaints over the years to the chem department who does nothing. Atleast 5-6 homework assignments every week and expects you to do 20+ hours of work a week on this single class. DO NOT TAKE
Nishida in my opinion is good at making difficult topics make sense in lecture. There is a lot of homework for this class but it helps in the long run. The reading helps to understand lecture material better and most the homework is related to material. She also gives out a fair amount of extra credit. If you put in the work, you will be fine.
Worst class I have ever taken and genuinely made me want to jump off a building. You get no help, loaded with tons of homework and belittled when asking questions. TAs are just as clueless as us and even after spending 20 hours a week on homework and tutoring the highest exam grade I have gotten is a 70. Disappointing bc I need it for my major.
Don't listen to recent negative reviews, CHEM 105 is your average college-level gen chem. Yes, there's going to be weekly reading assignments, homework, and a lab. Professor Nishida provides all the tools a student needs to succeed. The amount of extra-credit opportunities offered is astronomical for a gen-chem class. Low yield content on exams. :/
This class is extremely difficult for a gen chem course and Professor Nishida offers little to no help on exams, curves, and general homework questions. There is at least 5 assignments due each week along with the 4 hour labs and lab reports due each Friday. This class was very hard and if you can avoid it, you should.
I see reviews saying don't listen to the negative reviews, but please listen to them. Nishida is not a strong professor in my opinion. The entire class was structured poorly, student exam averages were in the 50s and 60s, with no curve. Some extra credit is offered, but its not a ton.
One of the worst professors I have ever taken. And I have had a LOT of bad professors, especially online. She is rude and self-centered, and most of the homework doesn't even have anything to do with tests. I cant say much here, but trust me, she is THE WORST. Take another chemistry class in highschool or community college so you don't suffer here.
In terms of lectures, she is below average. Many topics taught in a bad order or just poorly explained. Tests are mostly unrelated to the homework assignments which makes it difficult to study. There is a decent amount of extra credit, but it is concerning to me that I can get an A and still have very little understanding of what we learned.
This professor prepares her students to fail the class by giving no assistance whatsoever to study for exams, then she gets confused and blames the students for getting an average test score of 45%. The amount of work she assigns outside of class is outrageous. She does not have any sympathy for students, even when they try their best in the class.
The labs will carry your grade, the negative reviews are kinda sad cause there was so much extra credit given out...
She waited until after WSU's deadline to announce that she would be heavily rounding up everyone's grades. I'm talking like from a C- to an A. A lot of people dropped including me because you need to pass with at least a C+ to take any higher level chemistry. Now I have to not only retake the entire class, but pay for it too. Thank you Krista!!
Credit wise Im a senior and Ive taken a couple college level chem classes previously so I have had alot of proffesors. Hands down the worst one not only was it impossible to score a passing grade on the exams she is rude and talks down to her students and blames them for everything. If you have the choice DO NOT TAKE HER. She does give out EC
Dr. Nishida turned a 100 level class into a 300 level. Her exams were so difficult it was as if she wanted you to fail. The average on the second exam was about a 40% and she saw no problem with that. I got an A in the class but in order to do so I had to sacrifice to all of my mental and physical health. She ruined my first semester of college.
Intro level chem course with a test average of 48 on the second exam, and she then told the whole class (half of which studied 6+ hours) it was their own fault and they should be spending 20 hours per week (including lab stuff) on this class and shouldn't expect an A unless they aren't. Also her lectures were impossible to pay attention to.
Very challenging course-- don't get me wrong. But Nishida is knowledgeable, accessible, and easy to talk to. Office hours with her helped immensely. Exams are HARD but with dedicated study and by switching to her lecture section, I brought my grade from a failing one (failed the 2nd exam) to an A. Would definitely have her for lecture again.
This course wasn't very good. She constantly blames her students whenever they didn't understand material and blamed us for poor test averages. She made chemistry extremely difficult do not take her!!
THIS IS FOR CHEM 102 (was not allowing me to select chem 102 for some reason) As bad of a professor Krista is, she is the best Chemistry professor I have yet to meet. She actually lectures during lecture time and posts copies of her notes. Learning Cat can be accessed via panapto video, so you can attend virtually for participation.
Professor sucks. I only found I learned from her after doing the homework, reading the text, and doing the RA's before lecture and seeing how she works some problems out I was confused on. With that said, don't slack on all the assignments as it saved me in the end. Point based class so even if you do bad on tests you can still pass.
She is a kind person but not good at teaching a class. She goes to fast and her second exams do not have material discussed in class, the second exam is the hardest. Homework takes a ridiculous amount of time to finish, it is a heavy work load. Labs are a breeze but the post-labs are lengthy and hard to complete because directions are very vague.
Nishida manages to make the lectures way more difficult than it really is and makes snarky comments.
This is the worst chemistry class I have ever taken, everything is taught in the most over-complicated, out of order way possible. A general chemistry class should not be this difficult. It feels like nothing connects and everything is explained poorly. This is unfortunately a required class for many people, so best of luck.
Chem 105 has a lot of work and a lot of studying involved, but its a stem class so of course. She offers zoom calls for help and the lab TA I had is great. Just do all the work, you dont even have to do perfect, and study for the test. Youll get at least above a B
I learned nothing and taught myself. Many of the lectures did not cover topics on the homework.
I see a lot of complaining about Nishida and I honestly don't get it. Yes the class is hard and sometimes her teaching style isn't the best. But she is still a good prof. It is a chemistry class, its going to be difficult. You're just going to need to apply yourself and study. She offers a lot of extra credit, a lot more than others.
The class itself is a bit difficult but Nishida is good professor. Attendance is not mandatory however, I recommend attending her lectures because they are actually very helpful. The study guides could be better though. Overall, as long as you get your work done on time and take time to study for the exams you'll be fine.
the professor is alright but the class material is just hard, there's a lot of it and it's time consuming and hard. if you go to lecture and do all your labs and homework you'll be alright but that's a lot harder than it seems
You can do terrible on the exams in this class and still walk away with a B or higher if you do the best you can on all the labs and homework. I got a 51% on the third midterm, never payed attention in Lecture and will likely still receive an A. Work smarter not harder. Nishida is not a great professor, she is hard to follow in lecture.
Dr.Nishida's not the best ever but she at least tries. The material is really difficult and there's a lot to cover. The only thing that bothered me was that she wouldn't write our exams until the day before and the study guides were barely study guides so it was hard to prepare. We had 3 midterms and a final but you can still pass if you fail them.
Her lectures can be hard to follow, but they're pretty decent. She can be a bit rude when you ask questions, but usually pretty nice and funny. The weekly hw usually took me 2 hours. The tests are hard, but you can do well in the class even if you fail the exams. This class is just hard, period. She does have a decent amount of extra credit though.
Learned everything from the textbook and Youtube. The lecture's were only beneficial when she did practice problems.
Made me never consider any chemical majors after taking their course.
She breezes through topics often. I heavily relied on outside resources (yt, textbook, etc.) to understand lessons.
She breezed through topics without thoroughly going over them. I taught myself most of this course by using outside sources like YouTube and Chegg/Brainly.
Very difficult class and she is very unwilling to help students.
People are way way too harsh. Krista goes over material in class, gives plenty of extra credit, and the exams don't impact your grade that much. Go to the labs, do the homework, and listen in class and you'll be fine.
I'm currently in her 106 and am really loving her. The course sucks because I suck at chemistry, but Dr. Nishida herself is wonderful. If she reads this, I want her to know that she doesn't come off as mean or not willing to help. I have had the opposite experience and I know other students who like her a lot, too. So don't internalize the reviews.
People always say they dont like her and her class is so hard. You can do average on every exam but do all of the hw and labs and do just fine. Pay attention in class, take some notes, actually do the hw and try. She explains everything just fine. She has her grading laid out clearly, its based on points so just focus on getting points.
If you want to know your actual grade you have to plug your grades into an excel sheet. When students ask questions, she responds in a condescending manner rather than actually helping. Doesn't go over commonly missed questions on exams, blames students for ridiculously low class averages (32% on exam 2) Overall, rude and a waste of time.
I took this class fall 2021 but forgot to rate until I remembered how she gave me a 0 for all my homework because I used the wrong email for alex. She was rude and unprofessional, in my opinion. I still passed the class because the school stepped in and bumped everyones grades.
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS! She teaches as though she expects you to be fluent in chemistry before you even start the class. She rushes through material and doesn't explain things thoroughly at all. When someone asks a question about a topic, she says "that's the way it is, so deal with it" instead of explaining what things mean and its relevance.
She can be really hard to get ahold of and sometimes gives very unclear instructions and guidelines for labs and projects.
Dr. Nishida is a nice person, but the way she structures the course makes it difficult for students to succeed. She can seem unapproachable and strict, and at other times very relatable. If you go to her office hours in Troy though, she is super helpful! My one piece of advice is if you have an issue, talk with her in person and not through email.
Love love LOVE! Krista, she is so awesome and always makes my mornings better with her awesome coffee jokes. She makes her class extremely basic and basically can have zero prior experience with chemistry and ace her class with extra credit. The exams were also super awesome and basically can just rely on the notes she does in class to help you.
I had to retake this class, but that was mostly because the old homework system was so soul crushingly awful that it took me three hours to do one assignment. Nishida herself makes fun of students that do poorly and straight up tells us to give up hope right before the test. She also gets annoyed if you ask questions in class.
So many people have negative things to say about Dr. Nishida, but I simply think that she prefers to teach students who care and want to learn. She is very knowledgeable about chemistry and will walk you step by step through something if you don't understand. She was a great professor and the exams aligned exactly with what she taught.
This professor was awful, you do NOT want a professor like this. She must think very big of her self to treat students the way she does. I do not think she is well respected by students or other profs. Stay away.
FYI Chem116 review. I barely went to lecture and had like a 59% average exam score, but I still ended the class with an A because of the absolutely massive amount of extra credit there is. Her lectures are super helpful and she holds exam review sessions. She can be a little messy and not accessible outside of class, but I didn't really mind that.
