Always scrambling. Notes are confusing, tests are even harder. Not a good lecturer. Sometimes can't get thoughts together. Do not take her. DON'T.
notes are always wrong on powerpoints, scattered brained, had to asked other students to explain stuff to people because she didn't know how to explain it, gets really nervous lecturing
Have a really hard time focusing, and she's a bad lecturer so it is hard to follow her. She's a sweet lady, but her being sweet does not help my test scores.
Do NOT TAKE HER! You work sooo hard on everything for her to take a million points off of it. Its a one credit class but you'll spend a ton of time writing lab reports. DONT TAKE!!!!!
She's very helpful in lab. She goes over everything. If you follow her guidelines for the lab then you can get a good grade on the lab reports. Although seems very nervous in class, she's a very good lab instructor.
Definitely very scatter brained and not exactly "on her game" but if you put time and effort into it you can get an A. Chem 120 is just a time consuming course so you need to study. No unexpected/trick questions. Do the book problems and study guides and go to class- even though it's not mandatory
Dr. Funck is very scattered brain and often has trouble explaining material to her students. Her tests were never enough time with barely any curve. I've attended her office hours and they did not really help. She is nice but is not professor material and the class is struggling. If you can avoid her
She is soooo scatterbrained, she makes mistakes in the notes constantly and never clearly explains something before moving on quickly. Her tests are really long and never have time to finish them because the questions are way harder than what she gives examples on in class. AVOID! Simple class made very hard!
Doesnt know how to teach the subject. cant answer questions asked in class. not the nicest person. have had two tests so far and BOTH OF THE AVERAGES ARE FAILING GRADES. always making mistakes on test or powerpoints and doesnt konw how to explain things. avoid this professor.
DO NOT TAKE HER!!!!
DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE IF YOU ARE NOT GOOD AT CHEMISTRY OR ARE NOT GOOD AT LEARNING THINGS ON YOUR OWN! I did well in the course only because I read the book and had prior knowledge. She's very confusing and gets frazzled when you ask her a question. Overall our class does very poorly on her tests. You have to be comfortable with teaching yourself
Very socially awkward, she won't look you in the eye when you ask her a question. Her lab practicals were much harder than other lab's, and she grades the lab reports to the point where it's almost impossible to get an A on them. If I had to learn all my chem from her, instead of my lecture, I'd probably have failed. Overall: Poor.
Do not take her if you don't have prior knowledge of chem. the order you learn topics makes no sense. shes makes concepts much more difficult than they really are. she is a nervous wreck and doesn't know how to answer students questions properly. thankfully i am good at chem but felt extremely sad for the other students. Trust me and avoid her
DO NOT TAKE. horrible at explaining simple concepts and expects you to memorize way too much for one test. No homework, but mandatory attendance and tests are impossible (especially the short answers) JUST DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND DON'T DO IT
She is the WORST professor I have ever had. She flies through her power-points just to get through the assignments. Has no personality and is very awkward. Her test are very hard and they cover nothing from lecture. Unless you are good at teaching yourself, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!
She is such a nice lady, just has trouble making the class understand the topics. I did well in this class because i took chem in high school. If you put some time and effort in, go to her office hours and class, you can do okay.
She is very unhelpful and unclear. If she takes forever to go over something and doesn't finish a section, she wont go over it in class and will expect you to just teach yourself even when this is the BASICS OF CHEM and some people have never had this class before!
she is really unclear and gets flustered/frustrate really easily. she didn't explain things to me very well during her office hours either. avoid getting her at all costs
She is AWFUL. she grades on a bell curve, which means that you never know what grade you actually have in the class. she doesn't explain things in class or very well in her office hours. she gets flustered easily and can only explain things in one way. if you get her as a professor, drop the class
She is very awkward, but nice. She has corny jokes every morning. She moves very fast through the powerpoint. She tries to help students understand, but gets very frustrated very easily. There is tutoring which is a must. I would not recommend her unless you are a nursing major, do not take this class. The class average was a 66.
Professor Funck is SO nice. She's kind of quiet, but uses power points (which she posts on blackboard for you to print off before every class). Her tests are really challenging, and if you don't know chemistry very well beforehand I HIGHLY suggest attending tutoring sessions that are offered for the class, and the science/math learning center.
hands down WORST TEACHER i have ever had. I personally read the book, take notes, do all the book problems, and online hw and still fail every test. If you haven't taken AP Chem in High School plan on getting an F. DROP THIS COURSE! it will ruin ur GPA. This will be your worst class ever.
The absolute worst teacher I've ever had. Her expectations are entirely too high for a one credit course, and she prides herself on being the hardest chemistry lab professor. You will not get an A so don't sweat it.
DO NOT TAKE HER IF YOU VALUE HAVING FREE TIME. I literally went to EVERY office hour did all my labs early and I still got low Cs on all my labs EVEN THOUGH SHE EDITS THEM IN HER OFFICE HOURS. This class is seriously impossible.
This lab is difficult but after a while you start to understand her grading. During lab she talks really fast but is helpful if you need help. She's actually so nice and if you go to her office hours she will help you. Still, I don't know if it's possible to get a A.
I hate saying bad things about nice people, but in this case you just have to. As sweet and caring as Prof Funck is, her class is impossible. Material covered in class simply does not translate to the tests. "A" students fail her class just as commonly as "F" students. Switch if you can... or keep in mind that you will have to retake the course.
Worst teacher I've ever had. I'm not a chemistry person but that doesn't even matter in this class. Impossible to do well no matter how much you studied. I studied for hours on end for each test and failed every single one. Avoid at all costs
Terrible teacher. Super picky on lab reports. Doesn't care if you're struggling. Just formatting the lab reports takes hours. Getting the right answers takes even longer. Constant feeling of defeat in this class. If you want a good grade expect to live in her office with her.
Do NOT take Funck. Avoid at all costs.. You'll spend hours on lab reports just to receive a D/C. She is never clear why she counted off in the lab reports either, she just circles something and puts -5; so it is hard to try and improve your lab reports.
Dr. Funck is the hardest lab professors at JMU. She is not easy but she helps you at all cost if you ask. There no such thing as a dumb question. Ask her!! She wants you to learn, you will learn so much and she prepares you in the future. I suck at writing lab reports but i got used to it and it got easier. You will learn so much. "A" is possible.
She is hard but helpful!!
People think that shes a hard teacher but thats bcuz chemistry sucks not the teacher, shes pretty fair and does a good job of explaining the material. and she does alot to help boost your grade like homeworks and clicker points.
Dr. Funck's class is not easy whatsoever, but chemistry in general is a tough subject. She is extremely picky in what she looks for, but she is fairly direct in what she expects. If you go to her office hours, she is more than willing to help. She wants you to THINK which I mean, that's what we're in college for, right?
Funck is EXTREMELY picky on reports. You will do a formal lab report for every lab so be prepared. GO TO HER OFFICE HOURS. She will tell you exactly what to put in the report. I got D's on every lab until i went to office hours and managed to get B's on the last few. Midterm and final are calculations and from the procedure of every lab.
Dr. Funck was enthusiastic about teaching the class, however, she takes pride in being a difficult grader. She will take off points for the smallest mistakes on lab reports and she little help. Her midterm and final exams were some of the hardest exams I have ever taken. It was a miracle I passed the class. DO NOT take her!
unless you love chemistry, its fine. but most people hate chemistry so avoid her at all cost if its not your strong subject. she is really really hard! gives me a headache :(
TRY TO AVOID HER AT ALL COSTS. She is not too bad of a lecturer, the class is just very spotty. I know a snr chem major who said the class was like 131/132 but with no depth and was pointless and difficult. The tests are what kill you. When she says the class average is a D or F for every test but doesn't curve or learn, you know somethings wrong.
Very easy class. As long as you read the notes, you will easily understand the material. Funck loves to help students and will gladly show you how to do any homework problem. Most people are lazy and don't want to put the effort into the class. Go to lectures, read the notes, and don't wait until the night before to do the homework.
Her class is very difficult and boring. Not mandatory but there are clicker questions that contribute to your grade. Make sure you do the online homework because it adds up in the end. Also, don't worry if you get a few bad grades because she curves a lot at the end of the semester.
Funck is always willing to do what she can to help and is very enthusiastic about the material she teachers, but she has a hard time relaying the information to the class in a way that makes us understand. Always curves tests, easy to atleast get a C in the class. All multiple choice questions from tests come directly from the notes.
I took this class twice. She is an absolute awful teacher and she's really unclear. Chem 120 is supposed to be basic concepts and you don't "have to have a background in chem" but if you are coming in there blind you might as well already accept an F.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Seriously, unless you spend all of your outside time studying or getting help, there is no way you can get higher than a C. The class average is a D, so yeah... DO NOT TAKE HER. If you're an incoming nursing major with no other option... good luck to you.
DO NOT TAKER. not only is she SO awkward and unhelpful, she assigns hw on this thing called WILEY PLUS and u will hate your life trying to do it. If u ask her for help she tells you that you are not trying hard enough. She doesn't give examples of what she will be testing you on and expects you to combine chapters and solve prob u have nev seen b4
Would not recommend Professor Funck. Very difficult class overall and does little to help explain each topic. She never gives examples in class which actually relate to the homework she assigns. Most people have very bad grades..
I personally think most of the reviews on here are too harsh. I read the reviews before taking the class and I was terrified. She's actually not that bad. I understand most of her lectures and I do not have any background in chemistry. She's also helpful during her office hours. If you study A LOT for the tests, they are not that hard.
I have all A's in all my college courses. This has been the first class that I honestly tried my hardest in and still felt like my grades were NOT reflecting the amount of time I put into this class. I studied the material during all of my free time and neglected other coursework so I could do her work. It clearly did not pay off. Good luck to you.
If you're science-mined and go in for help and/or study a lot on your own time, then you will probably do okay in this course. A 'C' is not failure, after all. She rarely curves tests and when she does, it's not by much. Also, most of the average test grades are below 70%. All I can say it that I'm glad I passed. I would not recommend her.
Funck is not as horrible as everyone says she is. She is really nice and she will help you if you need it. She will curve the tests if everyone did badly, and will round your grade if you got close enough to the next letter grade up. You MUST study for the tests, and if you study you can get a decent grade, like as in any COLLEGE LEVEL course.
Funck is a challenging teacher. Her tests are pretty tough, and she grades lab reports harshly. A few minor errors in a lab report can result in a significantly lower grade. That being said, for the most part she tries her best to help when you have difficulties. You will learn to write a solid report; however, if you want an easy "A," avoid.
She is very confusing and not very clear in was she teaches. She also grades very harshly. most tests I got all of the multiple choice fine but work needs to be how specifically how she wants it. Do not take this class her grading is not fair.
In a class of 200 she refuses to use a microphone and will yell the information at you which causes her to stutter through everything. SOOOO unclear. AVOID HER CLASS!!!! If you ask her for help she basically states at you until you walk away cause she doesn't know what she's doing either.
I've had some really great professors, including my CHEM 131 professor last fall, but Funck is terrible. If you have no background in chem, the class is especially difficult but if you took high school chem, it's mostly review if you were good. Very impersonal in lecture but unfortunately, she's far better than the other CHEM 120 professor at JMU.
In 4 words...DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS...she takes points off for the smallest details and if you ever care about your GPA...your grade...or passing to go to orgo chem, don't count on it. The lab reports take up so much time, and have to be so specific for a 1 credit class. Just do yourself a favor and avoid this class.
She is the one of the wrost lab professor i had ever had in my life. she is too pick for the subject like chemistry where you have lots of freedom. I used ln/2.3 instead of log10, which is basically the same things. She takes the point off because she want log10. Never ever take lab class with her if you really like science(chemistry).Never!!!
She is literally the worst professor I've ever had. I did everything I possibly could to pass her class. She is a very hard grader and is very picky over little things that don't virtually matter. She's also very rude and a smart-ass when you ask questions. Avoid her at ALL COSTS
SHE IS AWFUL. I went to every class and i still did not do well. She is horrible at explaining things and makes you feel stupid if you ask her for help. Makes you buy $100+ software for really hard online homework. avoid at all costs, i know it is not an option to sometimes, but try to avoid her!
HORRIBLE is an understatement. She makes you feel stupid for asking a question, can't explain anything that isn't directly on the powerpoint, and makes tests impossible and tries to trick you in every way she can. Worst teacher I've ever had. I have a 100% on both homework and attendance but still have to retake the class because of test scores.
On a positive note, if you go to her for help during office hours she will help you if you have specific questions.. Beyond that, this class couldn't be over with soon enough. Good luck with this class! It isn't impossible.
she's very boring/awkward, had to teach material to myself but ended up with A in the class, Not a class you can study for night before. tests are 22 multi choice(4 pts) with some short answer. She is boring and gets flustered with questions but go to office hours review notes GO TO PASS Sess buy course pack. final easiest of her tests for semester
Incredibly difficult grader, does not explain things well, expects a lot from students, and only has one section at 8 am.
Actually a terrible teacher, she's unclear, flustered easily, a bully, and doesn't take responsibility for anything. Ended up doing well, but no thanks to her. Go to the review sessions at least the day before the test. You get a prac. test that's the same format.
AVOID AVOID AVOID, she teaches this class like her students are chemistry majors. She get flustered easily and won't admit when she makes a mistake. Her tests are difficult and are only 22-24 questions (with multiple choice). She understands the material, just a poor teacher.
She is a nice lady but a terrible teacher, she doesn't really know how to teach and she gets flustered way to easily on questions that she gets wrong and gets called out on.
Absolutely the worst. It says something when your average grades are in the 60's. However there is a curve. If you do have to take her as an instructor: ALWAYS look over the lab reports she graded in the past and FIX your mistakes, don't expect to get better grades without fixing what you got wrong before.
By far the worst teacher I have had a JMU. She takes of points for the most ridiculous things. Yes I know college is suppose to be hard, but at least take off points for the things that matter and not little insignificant detail. Hated going to class.
People don't give her enough credit! She come off as rude, but overall she is very helpful and her expectations are very clear. She's not the horrible teacher everyone says she is. Go in to her class with no preconceived notions and you'll find she's not bad. She does make you work hard for a good grade though so don't expect so an easy grade.
I understood the material because of previous chem classes and still had a really difficult time in her class. She tests you on exceptions to rules not the concepts themselves. So you can understand everything perfectly and are still doing well with a C which is ridiculous. Very nice woman extremely intelligent but try to get another professor
Here's the thing with Professor Funck- if you're a good student, you're going to do fine in her class. I am doing fine, but you really do need to work hard for it, and definitely have good resources, besides her, that you can ask for help (older student, tutor, etc.) She's not helpful and her tests are tricky. Doable, but James is the better choice
When you go to office hours she'll only tell you to read the book and figure it out. She won't go step by step until you get it. If you take chem with her, good luck!
This is the hardest class i have ever taken. funck is not personal, reads off the powerpoints, does not explain anything and going to her office hours are useless. the test averages are usually Fs, which she claims is "a good grade for chemistry." AVOID AT ALL COSTS
AVOID AT ALL COSTS! She just breezes through the chapters and expects everyone to understand. I got A's in chem throughout high school and now I currently have a C. She is so bad and unclear and is not that helpful at office hours. DONT TAKE.
She loves teaching lab and gives very clear and concise instructions. You will not do well on the first 23 reports, but if use the feedback it is possible to get ABs. She does curve and is very fair in assigning final grades. She expects hard work and for you to pay attention, but I feel like I came away very prepared for future chemistry labs.
awful teacher, gives no explanations on coarse material, leaves you in the dark
Hardest class and made my semester miserable, avoid if you can.
Our class test average hasn't been above a D, if thats any indication of what the class is like.
She always says "feel free to ask questions" but makes everyone feel stupid and incompetent when they actually ask questions. Her test averages range from 63-70's so there's that........ AVOID THIS CLASS
So i'm a nursing major which requires me to take this. I took AP chemistry in highschool passing with a low A, but this class is just impossible. Her tests are impossible and our entire lecture left everyday clueless. Class average on tests are 60-70s. She shouldn't even be a teacher. DO NOT TAKE
Dr. Funck's tests are very tricky and she does not curve. That said, the WileyPlus homework and clicker questions really help to bring your grade up, and I found Dr. Funck to be extremely helpful during office hours. The biggest help for me in the course was going to the Sci and Math learning center-the tutors were the reason I got an A in Chem!
She is an incredibly hard grader. Her feedback on lab reports is awful. Literally, she just writes "huh?' or "I'm confused" next to something wrong. That's it. However, she does help a lot when you go to her office hours. Do that for EVERY lab report. She'll be sassy, but she'll basically give you the answer. She does curve final grades though.
Literally regurgitates power points of notes that you're required to buy from the book store. I wish she taught better. Or at all for that matter.
Horrible class. Failed the first time, got a C- the second time. You need to give your all to pass this class like its a full time job. Tests are horrible, online homework is way harder than needs to be. If you have to take for nursing, just dont give up, study study study, go to ALL pass sessions, go to SSC, go to office hours, GO TO CLASS
If you're smart you'll be fine. Literally haven't gotten below a 90 on any test so far. Stop freaking out people and go to class. You'll be fine.
Honestly this class isn't too bad. Attendance is necessary since there are clicker questions for participation. The tests are TRICKY but if you study hard enough and do the review testspractice problems, you will be fine. I found that going to the PASS sessions really helped plus the clicker questions and homework bring up your grade.
Okay heres the thing: chem is hard no matter who your professor is. This is my second time retaking the class.. I hated chem and because of that I blamed it on Funck... but she actually isn't that bad! She works with you and wants you to do well. If you go to the mock exams and study you will do okay. You have to go to class but she's helpful!
Dr. Funck gets a bad rep for her lectures, but i took her for lab and thought she wasnt bad at all. After every lab she emails you with what she is looking for in the lab report. Everytime i emailed her for help she always replied and gave good feedback. if you go to her office hours she'll also give you one on one help. I would take her lab again.
Avoid at all costs. She's not helpful at office hours, the textbook isn't useful, and she is just all around horrible. I beg you not to take her for your GPA's sake. I took the class twice and failed both times. Don't buy the textbook because it's impossible to understand. This class is just absolute torture.
Do not take her whatever you do! She the absolute worst chem professor I have ever had and I've passed my previous chems before and failed her class! She doesn't help you at all, she's condescending, and what she says are on the tests, are what aren't on the test.
AVOID DR. FUNCK AT ALL COST! one day in class she literally said "I'll never give you a problem this easy to solve on a test, I'm going to try and trick you." She was very condescending and got defensive when anyone asked a question. Tests were impossible but if you do really well on the final you can do okay in the class.
There are 4 tests & cumulative final. Attendance is mandatory because of clicker questions. She's an okay professor. I got 100 on all Wiley Plus Assignments. I went to the Science&Match center which helped out a lot. She replaces lowest test grade w final . I also went to PASS sessions which really helped! Ended up w a B+ & I am a Nursing Major.
Not helpful whatsoever, and does not present the material well. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND!!
Literally the hardest class i have ever taken in my life, i have never studied so much for one class in my life and i still got a C. her test are awful and almost everyone gets below a C but she does curve the final grades.
Dr. Funck is terrible. I dropped mid-year and got a W even though I need this class for my major. I got mono and she did not respond to any of my 10 emails and then made me take an exam the first day I was back. Does not answer any questions in class, goes extremely fast and her tests are near impossible. If you do end up with her BUY HER BOOK!
DO NOT TAKE HER! Condescending and sarcastic when answering questions, talks down to you. Emailed her about an assignment and she put my words in quotations and mocked them. Had to drop class with a W even though I need it for my major. Don't waste your time, incredibly difficult, extremely rude.
She undeservedly takes the blame for a hard class. Yes the class is tough, but she presents material well in class. Her tests are fair as long as you study. She kindly gives homework reminders and offers help during office hours. If you get a low grade, it is more than likely your own study habits. You gotta work for it - this is college. She's ok.
Dr. Funck is nice and will help you when you ask. However, during lectures she only repeats what the powerpoint says. There is online homework for every chapter which is harder than the examples in the book. The tests are super hard and you will fail if you don't study.
I had to teach myself all the material because she basically just restates the textbook. GOD FORBID you ask a question. She gets extremely flustered and gives you such sass about asking a simple question. Her review sessions suck. I absolutely hate this woman do NOT take her class. Worst professor ever and not social at all.
Did not like her. Not friendly or approachable at all. Each time I went to office hours she was rude and snobbish. Attendance not taken but clicker questions each day so don't skip class. Gave a quiz the Friday before Thanksgiving break when half the class wasn't there. Tons of homework. I recommend taking a different chem professor.
JUST DON'T DO IT. SWITCH OUT. More than 1/2 the class either dropped, failed, or/and is retaking the class. Class is hard and there is little to no help from the professor. She makes clicker questions nothing like what will be on the test. She gives you homework to help raise your grade but it's so hard it hurts it. And she give 20 question tests.
DO THE HOMEWORK
Her lectures are confusing and you will have to do a lot of work on your own. The homework is online and you have unlimited attempts so make sure that you do it and get 100. Also, make sure you don't miss class because there are clicker points that are easy to get and will help your grade out a lot. Also, she rounds the grades at the end of the sem
Dr. Funck takes every opportunity she can to get feedback on her teaching but the problem is that it never seems to change her teaching methods. Make sure you go to class because the clicker question points can really make a difference. Going to her office hours for homework is scary but getting the full points on them also really helps.
Honestly i hate chemistry like most people but Funck was very nice to me and my lab partner. She is a tough grader don't get me wrong, but she also curves the crap out of your lab grade if she likes you. I failed the midterm and the final exam, but still got a B because she liked me and I wrote good reports. Take her lab for sure.
Everyone knows the deal with her. Here's the lowdown: She is TOUGH and she goes REALLY fast in class. The curriculum is difficult and there is too much for her to teach in one semester, so students often fall behind. She is not that nice but is there when you need her. Keep up with the work and watch youtube videos after class and you'll do OK.
She's really rude for no reason and tries to quiz you in any way she could make you feel stupid when you go to her for help. The opposite of what any chem professor should be as we ALL know chemistry is already hard as is. Picks favorites and is mean to the kids she doesn't like, who knows what she has against them. Stay AWAY
Don't take her at all!! Don't be like me and think that you can do well in any class with any prof. She is not a good speaker, and the way she grades is so specific, that if you don't know it at all, you're toast. I'm sure she's a great person, but not a great lab prof.
Although she provides help in her office hours, one should not be required to visit her constantly in her office. She is one of the worst professors I have ever had and is a very biased and picky grader, loves to play favorites and enjoys making you suffer if you're not her pet. very intelligent woman but incredibly terrible teacher.
Funck's class isn't as hard as people make it out to be. If you study for the tests and put in the effort to do well, you will. When I studied, I got As, when I didn't I got Cs. She is also sweeter then most people think. She had a baby this semester and still came in to see us for our final. Don't blame Funck because you did not want to study.
Dr. Funck is an okay teacher but she can be really annoying sometimes. She talks super fast and seems really socially awkward. I don't like her too much but you can do well if you put in the extra effort and do lots of practice questions. Lots of homework! But the homework is really good practice and helps your grade. Tests are so stressful though
I would not recommend Dr Funck to freshman. She is extremely hard and picky. She also gives no leeway if you make a minor error. She teaches us the basics, but tests us on tricky and very hard material. Office hours never helped either because she would just advise us to practice more.
Worst professor I've EVER had. She is extremely condescending when you ask her a question. When I went to her for help, she told me to read the book the night before an exam and to practice concepts that could be used as trick questions because that's what she'll test on. 10/10 do not recommend!!!
Dr. Funck is nice, but she does not know how to explain the material. I was very confused all year, and am retaking the class next semester.
Avoid her at all costs!. Her tests are all trick questions and very unfair. She is not prepared for class and is super unorganized with posting things. I am going to have to retake this class and it will most definitely not be with her.
avoid.
Absolutely horrible. She is mean and condescending when anyone asks her a question. She does not present material clearly at all. Very unorganized and unprepared. Doesn't offer help to people who are struggling. I studied every night for 2 weeks before every test, went to pass sessions, tutors at SSC, and never got higher than a C on the tests.
If at all possible avoid this class. She seemed nice and accessible outside of class; however, when I went to office hours she did not offer ANY help what so ever and told me to simply practice more. Her tests are unbelievably hard and the average was usually a 55. Most people are having to retake this class so please avoid.
only take her if you absolutely have to. very unorganized and frustrating. avg on every test: 66, 63, 55, 55. if you have to take her watch out for trick questions. luckily, she does not write the final so that could save you, but still avoid at all costs. you will spend a lot of time out of class on chem and it will not reflect on your grade :(
I would avoid her if you can, she is very condescending when you ask questions and does not help you. Excessive work outside of class and she's a very tough grader. She does give a decent curve which was the only thing that saved me.
Tests are extremely hard. Think you're doing good on the test, just wait until you get the score. Everything she teaches in class is nothing compared to the homework or tests. Recommend you pick another teacher ASAP!!!!!!!!
Dr Funck means well, but her lectures are unorganized and don't prepare you for the homework. The tests arent too bad, but theres always one or two questions that I can't even attempt. Go to PASS, the tutor center in SSC, and read the textbook beforehand and you should be ok. Bring your laptop to class or print the notes bc she goes very fast.
Lots of people will tell you that she's a bad professor, but she's honestly pretty good. She gives you all of the tools you need to succeed. You just have to be willing to put in the effort to do well. She is a professor that will teach you, but you also have to make sure you're understanding the curriculum on your own.
Dr. Funck really is not a bad professor. She can be a bit condescending and passive aggressive over email, but her lectures are very clear and easy to follow. She does clicker questions, so skipping isn't really an option, and there is frequent group work. The class is hard, but if you really commit and put in the time and effort, you can get an A
Dr. Funck is a very smart professor, that being said, she teaches like we should already know what the material is. You have to work for the grade you want. 4 tests and a final, all HUGE parts of your grade. Lots of homework, pre-lec quizzes, and clicker, but they help. I'm a nursing student and I have a B.. hoping the curve at the end saves me.
Dr. Funck was possibly the worst professor I've ever had. Her tests are straight from the powerpoints, but 10 times harder. The tests are impossible. Avoid her at all costs!!! Be prepared to read basically every word of the textbook, pre-lecture quizzes that make no sense, and homework that takes hours!! Be prepared for a grade of C or below. Run.
She makes chem really hard, will teach you one thing and then switch up and say the complete opposite. In class when we did workshops, and if we asked her a question she was no help at all. Even if you pay attention to lecture and study for the tests they are extremely hard. I would highly recommend you not take her if you want to pass.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS! She was the worst teacher I have ever had. Funck made this class way too difficult for CHEM120. She gave an insane amount of homework. She was not helpful in office hours and she was VERY condescending.I have heard much better things about the other teachers and would recommend not taking a chance on Funck.
Literally the worst professor to walk the quad at JMU. Do not take, avoid at all costs. Tests are so tough and the average is in the low 60s. She lectures way too fast and rushes through important material. You have to go to class because there's clicker questions. This class is way too hard for a 100 level GEN ED class.
Actually the worst professor I've ever had. I would not recommend her to ANYONE, regardless of the circumstances for taking the class. Unresponsive, vague emails, doesn't care about you... the list goes on. Look in the dictionary and find the word "bad", most synonyms of the word describe this professor. CHEM 120 is a hard class, but she's the wors
Dr. Funck's brutal grading methods will frustrate you to no end. The average on 6 out of our 9 labs was a D. I went to her office hours to get help on the post lab questions and she marked me wrong on the answers that SHE gave me. Her midterm and final are manageable just remember sig figs. I had a 78% in the class and with her curve managed a B.
Tests and lab reports are impossible to do well on. I took my lab report for her to look over once and was told it was good, and still got a 30/70 on it. Do not recommend whatsoever
Worst professor I have had at JMU by far. Very bad at giving grades back. She told our class on the first day that she will make it seem as though we are failing. Any feedback she gives is condescending and rude. Expect low grades on lab reports; she is extremely picky. Take any other professor if you can.
Prof Funck was so incredibly knowledgable in her area of expertise that she made all of her students feel dumb and did not know how to clarify for understanding. Her tests are hard and her homework problems are lengthy. GO TO PASS SESSIONS. I devoted all of my time and energy to her class and still didn't do as well as I hoped.
Dr. Funck is by the worst professor I've had & will ever have. She reads right off of her powerpoints & her tests are close to impossible. I devoted the same amount of time to this class as I did my 4 other classes combined. Homework takes hours to complete and is extremely hard. Low C almost all semester but got a solid B bc of midterm & curve
One of the hardest classes I've taken at JMU. Dr. Funck isn't a good teacher and belittles her students. She tries to trick you and makes you feel stupid. She reads right from lectures and doesn't help with questions. The tests are extremely hard and she grades workshops very harshly. You pretty much have to teach yourself right before tests.
I would not recommend her. She is terribly awkward and doesn't make eye contact when she talks. She definitely know a lot about Chemistry, but she doesn't know how to explain it. You will do alright if you take time and teach yourself. I also recommend going to the PASS sessions held.
Funck is not approachable and doesn't explain things very clearly- which can really hurt in a difficult subject like chemistry. There is a lot of homework, but sometimes it doesn't even reflect the material tested.
Dr. Funck is the worst. Do not take any classes with her. Like even if you need that class do NOT take it. You can take it another semester. Avoid her at all cost. Shes condescending and grades way too harshly.
DO NOT TAKE IT!!! This is supposed to be an easy chemistry class. She teaches things i've never taken in my other chemistry classes. Tests are very difficult and are nowhere related to what you learn in class. Also gives pre-lecture quizzes which are graded so you have to read ahead. My worst class taken at JMU. Looks like i'll be getting a C.
Easily the worst professor here. Being challenged in class is one thing, but she makes all of her assignments impossible. She told us she purposefully makes everything extremely difficult, which makes the semester very discouraging because you constantly get failing grades back even though you spend 4-10 hours on each lab report. TAKE SOMEONE ELSE
Worst class I've ever taken at JMU. Class seems impossible to pass. Makes everything way harder than it has to be. Average grade for the midterm was a 45%. She takes pride on her being the hardest professor to ever exist. Avoid her at all costs!! Every lab takes hours to do just to get a failing grade back for the grade. Hardest class ever.
Tests do not correlate to lecture material or homework. Hard to know what she wants or what to prepare for. Workshops also are very hard. Not good at responding to questions or giving feedback. Do not take her.
Actually a terrible teacher, she's unclear, flustered easily, a bully, and doesn't take responsibility for anything. Don't take unless you're willing to teach yourself everything.
ONE WORD.. AWFUL. If you take this class then goodluck. Don't let my grade fool you. This was the hardest class I have ever taken
Do not take this class at 8am. Attendance is mandatory via an online clicker website that you need to pay for and trust me if you take it at 8 you will not make it every time. Tests are only 25 questions and there's no partial credit so it's almost impossible to do well. There are homework questions for every chapter that take up a lot of time too.
I took this class as a repeat forgive because I had a C and I most definitely should have waited for another professor. The material is simple, but she makes the 25 questions on each test as hard as she possibly could. Also had a 89 but she doesn't give plus or minus grades so I was left with a B. Very smart professor, but not a good teacher
I'd honestly rate her a 0 if I could, but they don't let you go that low. Her tests have slim to do with what she goes over in class, and she expects you to take quizzes on material she hasn't yet taught. Avoid at all costs, especially for my fellow nursing majors who care about their score to get into the program.
Biggest regret of last year is taking her class!!! Test only have 25ish questions, so if you miss a couple you already are down to a B. Tests are a HUGE part of your final grade, and most of the test questions are either extremely specific, or harder than any material covered in class. Also super unhelpful when asked questions.
To everyone taking this class thinking the ratings are just being over exaggeration, theyre not. She is the worst professor I have ever had I had an F in her class until I took the final and my grade went to a C bc she doesn't make the final! She is not a helpful professor, talks down on you when you ask for help, and treats you like an idoit
She managed to be the worst professor, or teacher for that matter, that I have ever had or will ever have. She is mean and bullies her students in her grading. She fails you on every assignment and then curves at the end so that the administration doesn't fire her right away. Avoid at all costs!! Change your entire schedule if you have to.
She is literally the worst teacher I've ever had in my entire life. I haven't learned a single thing in this class and the tests have nothing to do with anything that we learn in class. She isn't helpful when I've asked her questions and she talks down to everyone. Her lectures are pointless but she takes attendance. If I could give a 0 I would.
If you're willing to teach yourself everything, take this professor. Her exams do not correlate with anything you do in the class, workshop, homework, and even the test review she gives us. So even if you study for hours and hours everyday, you will end up unhappy with your test grades. I do not recommend, stay away if you can
Professor Funck is very awkward in class and also in person. Her class is difficult and no matter how hard you work you will still fail. Avoid her at all cost,if you can. She doesnt seem to care about the fact that all her students are struggling in her class. Would NOT recommend.
bro dont take the class it aint worth it unless you could read her mind, she be trippin trppin
This class was too hard for a lab. We had a formal lab report due every week, and the only way I got decent grades on them was going to her office hours every week and getting help. The average on the midterm was a 46%. We also have pre-lab quizzes every week, but theyre always so random, and she usually wont post the labs until the morning of.
Dr. Funck is possibly one of the worst humans I've ever met. She is so rude and talks down to you when you ask a question, gives an attendance code so if you're not there you'll get a 0 for participation, gives pre-lecture quizzes that are ridiculously hard, and the homework assignments take hours. Avoid this class AT ALL COSTS.
Do not take her for any class ever!! She is rude, shes really bad at explaining things and teaching, she makes you feel stupid for not know what her vague explanations mean, and she grades super tough. She referred to herself as the sig fig Nazi in our lab. Everyone is failing her lab because she makes it impossible to pass and shes proud of it
Dr. Funck is a very sweet lady that cares for her students but she is a difficult grader and the labs do take a large amount of time to complete. However, she is very willing to help outside of class if you go to her office hours.
Dr. Funck is a very smart woman but she lacks the social skills and patience required of a teacher. She is a very harsh grader but she does curve which is helpful. However she does not tell you what you did wrong on reports and is rude and condescending when asked for help. If you have her I would find another teacher or resource to help you.
She knows a lot about the Chemistry, but is terrible when it comes to explaining it. You could do really well on all the hw, participation, and quizzes, but if you bomb the tests your grade will be bad. If you go to class, the pass sessions, and practice on your own you could get a good grade, but don't expect her to help you pass.
The worst chem professor at JMU, do not take if you can avoid. She goes too fast in her lectures and doesn't explain things well at all. I can't even count how many times she was rude to me for just asking her "how do I do this?" Good luck Nursing students.
If I could give this proff. a 0 I would. I asked her a question on what I should do for my experiment because I was a new transfer student and she told me, "Looks like you'll have to figure it out yourself. I don't know what to tell you". She talks to you with her eyes closed most of the time and no matter what you do it won't be good enough.
Gives group workshops where she is no help and the information is 10x harder than what she teaches. Expects you to look at easy notes and know how to do the problem 10x harder than it actually is with no help from her. She will never look you or another student in the eye. The reviews are 100% correct about her, even if she tries to say different.
Tried to give Dr. Funck the benefit of the doubt but I quickly realized how accurate the ratings were. Tests are 50%+ of your grade and 25 q's four points in 1 hour. Does not teach you what you need to know for the tests or workshops. She does drop some of your lowest grades but its really not enough. Does not post your standing grade on Canvas.
She wasn't terrible in lab, she gave feedback in class. If she sees you trying and continuously not getting the right answer, she will gladly help you. Sometimes it is good advice and sometimes its bad advice. My only problem is that she didn't grade our labs in a timely manner so my group never knew what we could improve on. She still hasn't lol.
Avoid at all costs. This class isn't easy, and taking it with her makes it so much harder. I'd walk into the tests thinking I knew the material, and would fail the tests because they were on different things than she taught us. If you're a nursing major, PLEASE find someone else to take this class with. I changed my major because of this class.
TRIED to give her the benefit of the doubt but oh my god. I went into this course taking it online thinking that with COVID and all she would be a little lenient given the circumstances but nope. Tests are insanely hard and the material on the test isn't even taught. Basically wasted a repeat-forgive when I thought id get a better grade but nope.
I'm taking the course for a repeat forgive online and the class is impossible. The class test average is a 65 which she claims is good for Chem 120 but if you need this course for nursing or health that is not okay. The test and workshops are nothing like what she teaches. She doesn't curve the test even when the averages have been 50s or 60s.a
Hahahaha. If you are a nursing major dont you even think about doing this to yourself. But heres the rundown for you people who wont listen. Homework is long and tedious, pre-lecture quizzes, clicker questions, 4 tests and a final. The only thing nice is when you get a 45 on a test the 65 you get on the final will replace it. She tries I guess
The very moment you see this lady on your schedule, harass your academic advisor and make sure you stay 6 miles away from her class. she makes u feel stupid for asking questions. She doesn't give you much time to complete the lab and when you ask for extended time she gives u a nasty look. Funny thing is, she takes the entire semester to grade!
Do not take this class if you do not have to. I thought it would be very interesting and I would learn a lot but it was just so difficult and impossible. The tests are nothing like what you learn and the workshops are even harder. Do not recommend.
Does not grade things until the very last minute. And by last minute, I mean its the last day of the semester and I dont know my final grade in the class.
She only met with our class during Friday workshops that were usually difficult and the grading was unclear and unfair (2 workshops are dropped). Only reason I got an A was because of our other professor, Dr. Wilson who curved our first test (class average of D-) and graded a few workshops. Please, please, work problems everyday. READ the textbook.
This class was horrible. Everyone I talked to said that her class was impossible but I took it anyways because I needed the credit, and that was a horrible idea. By far, the worst professor I have ever had.
Funck was the hardest class I have ever taken in my life. I have taken chemistry before and it was nothing like this class. She does not teach at all and will not answer your questions well if you don't word it smart. She just gives us the midtap and the lecture video but does not explain them at all in class and we just work in groups all class.
I only had Dr. Funck for lab, so I cannot attest to her teaching. What I can say, though, is that Dr. Funck is not suitable for online instruction. We have only received our grades back for one lab and any pre-lab quizzes that are automatically scored. She tries her best to help but we do not receive any feedback to improve. I would avoid.
Try to avoid. She is such a tough grader and is not good at explaining what you did wrong. All I can say is, AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
Took this as a summer class. Honestly, I thought she was a pretty good prof. Whenever I asked a question, she wouldn't just give me the answer but would help me focus on a thought process so I would get it myself so I felt good about myself. I am not great at chemistry, but she helped me take the time to help me when I needed it.
Do. Not. Take. Her. Class. In class you just do group work that she doesnt help with and she sends out videos to teach the material instead of doing it herself. She doesnt answer questions at all and basically expects you to know everything from the videos (that dont help at all!)
absolutely hate having this class. i do not understand anything because the professor does not teach. each day is a group work day working on packets. you have to learn by using MindTap so the subscription is well worth the money. do not recommend taking her unless it is the absolute last option.
I would not recommend taking this class with her. She never helped when people asked questions. Very hard to understand what she was talking about half the time. Best thing she did was replace lowest test grade with final. Im sorry if you get her.
1. It is flipped classroom. You will struggle if you are unfamiliar with the format. Lots of work outside of class. 2. ALL of classwork is group work. The worksheets are well made; some people think otherwise. 3. There are many resources to succeed, use them 4. Quizzes make big % of grade, lowest dropped! I don't understand why she is so disliked
Dr.Funck's Chem131 will be a hard class if you don't do your tophat assignments and put in effort outside of class. She is approachable and willing to help you if you are struggling in class. If you want to succeed, I recommend you go to office hours, and PASS sessions, and do extra reviewing outside of class.
The only benefit of going to lectures is getting credit for the worksheets. Instead of answering HW questions, she picks the easiest example to show. Also, readings/HW that are due on Monday's are not posted until Sunday night. The problem is the in-class worksheets are based on those readings. So you have less than a day to watch 3-4 30min videos.
Whatever you do don't take her, Summer starts in 2 weeks and I have no clue what my grade could be bc she doesn't grade anything.
Do not take this class, like never ever. This class was the most stressful class I have ever taken in my entire life. If you want to wake up to 6 hours of homework that was assigned at 4am while you were sleeping and is due by midnight that night, then go for it. It is incredibly stressful to do well and try to manage the amount of work assigned.
The only "textbook" she requires is a site called TopHat and she uses that to teach you. As in, you read the chapter and answer questions. She'll go over a few things from the chapter and the rest is up to you. She does put you in groups of six or so and that really helps with not failing the class. If you can help it, DO NOT take her class.
While her class is not perfect, and I'm not a big fan of TopHat to learn Chemistry material AT ALL, Dr. Funck is a nice person and knowledgeable professor, who will try her best accomodate your issues. To see this aspect of her, you must look beyond some of her quirks & mannerisms that I suspect may be due to neuro-divergence & social anxiety.
Dr. Funck only gets hated on because the course is hard and she is a bit quirky. However, she is also a really nice person who genuinely wants to help you succeed in class. Chemistry is insanely hard and you MUST study to pass it. But Funck is very helpful and going to her office hours actually helps. I would definitely take her again.
She does not grade anything ever, and when she does it's very harsh. She gives low grades but does not explain what was wrong with it.
She gets a really bad rep and I can understand why, but she is a really sweet person and will make sure you are on track if you go talk to her individually. She is pretty understanding if you just talk to her. Her lectures and lab are pretty mediocre, but she will help you out a lot if you just go and ask her.
Do not take this course. I promise you will regret it.
Don't take this professor, just don't and thank me later.
If you have the option, don't take Dr. Funck. She isn't a terrible person, besides being extremely condescending, just not a good professor. She doesn't grade anything on time (or at all until the end of the semester)& she is not helpful during lab at all, which led to a very stressful & frustrating 3 hours. Just pray you get a good lab group.
Flipped classroom for chem already sucks, but the Tophat textbook (which only Dr. Funck uses) made it much more difficult. The Tophat content was lacking and barely explained things, and readings were often uploaded with a day or less to complete them so it was very stressful. Tests had a 60 average. Don't take this professor if you can help it.
Defining mistakes in nearly every lecture and neglects to mention vital information/ exceptions to rules. "Textbook" is lacking in thorough description of how to solve equations, don't expect much clarification from her. PASS/ tutoring are a necessity if chem isn't your strength. Lecture is all group work, results in copying instead of learning.
A lot of assignments, heavy reading on TopHat, which did not do a great job at explaining, and a lot of assignments that had you practicing math problems you just read about with only 2 attempts to get it right. I went to most pass sessions and still felt like I really struggled. Also, her grading is harsh.
This teacher is the worst I've ever had. They should teach during lectures instead of giving group work and 16 homework assignments a week. It is difficult to learn anything in class. My advice is to avoid taking her class. She assigns too many tasks too frequently. This teacher's behavior is unacceptable. JMU should fire her.
Hard to learn anything in class and usually just ends up with people copying. Her handwriting is impossible to read. The countless online assignments she assigns are basically useless. Be prepared to teach literally everything to yourself.
350 words isn't enough to talk about Funck. 1.) bad teacher, complicates everything. 2.) talks poorly about students behind their back WHILE the student is in the room. 3.) Closes her eyes when she speaks? eye contact is the LEAST she could do. I wish JMU cared more about student opinions on teachers. Might as well not have a teacher.
i cant even describe how i feel about her. and its not good.
the anxiety i have about this class is severe
I took my time and went to her office hours 2 times a week, and she is the most caring teacher Ive ever had. She not only helped me with 131 stuff but also chem 132 even though she does not teach it. She actually cares about her students and a good teacher, just because the class itself is hard, does not mean it's because of her. She is my fav.
Taking her class was a learning curve. She knows what she is talking about but has a difficult time conveying the information in a way the class can understand. Try not to take her for 131. If you do have her, give yourself plenty of time to work on concepts outside of class.
Overall, the class is built to not actually prepare you for the quizzes or final. She clearly knows what she is talking about, but barely spends any time at all actually going over concepts. You better be prepared to learn it on your own. She isn't very approachable, and doesn't answer questions when people raise their hand, often ignoring people.
Funck uses the flipped method, but not in a way that allows students to succeed. She briefly discusses the previous nights reading and then moves into a group worksheet. I found her teaching not helpful and relied on my practice and friends to understand the material. Even so, I usually got 70s on my exams. This is a difficult class, don't take her
Flipped classroom style learning, nothing in lectures matters and most of the days were spent given group work which no one in my group actually knew how to complete. Withdrew from the class after about two weeks in after receiving below a 50 on two exams which were happening almost weekly. All of the learning from this class takes place at home.
There is nothing that unites JMU students other than the strong dislike (hatred) of Funck. She does not lecture, the chem class is a "flipped" classroom but not to your benefit. You have to watch lectures & read your book then complete hw before you come to class then you do group work in class.
There is no teaching going on. There have been times that information on tests was but was taught/in the lectures or answered by her & she just said "you'll have to figure it out". She is the worst professor in the history of JMU. Your basically paying $2,000 to teach yourself chemistry. DO NOT TAKE HER!!
She was very frustrating to cooperate with. The amount of homework assigned was barely covered from previous lectures and class materials. I probably spent 95% of the time just trying to grasp the concepts of chemistry by teaching myself, which proved to be useless nonetheless. Her exams are insanely difficult at times.
Funck's class is challenging, but with Unstuckstudy and focused practice, it's manageable. Her teaching style takes some adjusting, but office hours help clarify concepts. Overall, it's a tough but rewarding course.
Has no business teaching at a University, ESPECIALLY an intro course. Changes need to be made, JMU Chemistry...
These ratings seem very unfair for Dr. Funck. My experience in Chem 131L was much different. If ur kind to her she'll be patient with you and answer all your questions rlly well. I suck at chem and she nvr made me feel stupid like some prof. tend to do. She cares a lot about you and wants you to do well. Just talk to her and be nice to her.
She knows what she is talking about, but doesn't do a good job of articulating concepts. She isn't super approachable and often makes you feel dumb when asking questions. Your grade in this class depends entirely on the work you put in on ALEKS assignments, pre-class readings/ assignments, and tests. No “lecturing” going on. It's all up to you.
A lot of online homework with Aleks. You will need to go to PASS sessions in order to get the material. You don't get a lot of lecture to actually understand the material.
Please JMU please fire her please JMU. Seriously how is she still here. DO NOT TAKE HER!!! PLEASE JMU DO SOMETHING!!! If you want your hair falling out due to stress take this class!! Literally take ANYONE ELSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Funck made me hate chemistry. As an into course for my freshman year she was absolutely terrible. Lectures for about 10 mins and that's it and then you do group work. Don't take her if you don't know basic chemistry because she won't teach you. She also doesn't prepare you for tests at all.
Oh my god I literally want to bang my head into the table because she RAMBLES. It's lab so it's all group labs that you design yourself (not at all difficult). Talking to her is so difficult because she gets very emotional and also only talks with her eyes closed (??). There is hardly any outside of lab work and it's only once a week so not too bad
One of the best at JMU I took two of her classes and I enjoy it a lot of assignments from her lectures are really interesting and tough but once you understand the lectures you will be advance in her class many students drop out for being lazy, not smart, or skipping her class while others would focus and stay on top with the class take her.
Don't take as this professor. She is degrading and doesn't appreciate being asked questions. I will never step foot in her classroom again.
Very tough grader and degrading with comments and would never help when we were confused. Take someone else if you can.
The teaching style was rough around the edges. I struggled all semester.
Dr. Funck is an incredibly caring professor, she doesn't deserve all of the hate on here. The class material itself is incredibly difficult and extremely time consuming, however she does her very best to help and students should take advantage of that. Loved her enthusiasm would take again!
Unless you spend every waking second studying chem, there is no way you'll pass with this professor. She doesn't answer questions in a way you'll understand. My entire group and others around us didn't understand her answers, so I know that it's not just me. she's nice, but just a terrible teacher. Nothing could've prepared me for how bad she is.
Lectures about topic for about 10 minutes, then you work in assigned groups on a worksheet for remainder of class. Class is only 50 minutes, so my group cared more about getting the ws done then helping each other, which wasn't good for me. Go to PASS sessions! A lot of homework and quiz grades mean a lot more than final so try on those more!
Overall the class itself wasn't all that difficult, but what made it difficult at times was the professor and how she teaches, interacts, and the structure of the class. Never felt comfortable around her, I also didn't know what my grade was till the end of the semester. If you wanna save your sanity don't take her
Don't do it.
Overall I found this prof relatively cool, the material itself is extremely difficult but she does her best to make it understandable.
No. Just no
Stay away. She's a nice person but doesn't teach or explain anything when you ask. She will barely help you and expect you to know everything shes talking about.
DO NOT TAKE! Prof Funck has work days and lecture days but on lecture days expects you to have already taught yourself the lesson and she just wants to go over information at rapid speed. LITERALLY 100 WPM. Her workshop days don't relate to the ALEKS homework we do or what we teach ourselves. Take CHEM 131 with anyone else but her.
While I REALLY do not like this class, Funck isn't "evil" like some of these reviews say... she does care about your well-being but just is not a good lecturer. U have to teach yourself everything and then she lectures ~1x/week super-fast and it doesn't make a ton of sense. Exams are incredibly difficult and weigh very heavy on your grade.
Funck made me switch my major. I took her first semester Freshman year and was STRUGGLING. She used a "flipped" classroom which basically means you teach yourself everything and do worksheets in class. Attendance is basically mandatory because she has a graded group worksheet every class. Moral of the story. DONT TAKE HER!
Love her, you gotta study extra hard but the tests are not that bad.
She is such a sweetheart and is really passionate about chemistry! Her class is easy because you work in groups when your in class and besides test you just do aleks assignments. If you ever have questions go to her office hours she wants to help! I got a 48 on the first quiz and started going to her and ended up with 100 on the last test!
Took her first semester, as the semester progressed it seemed like she helped less and less. She disrespected myself and other students (multiple times) and barely lectured. There was HOURS of homework almost every night on ALEKS. I had a test avg of 75 and getting 100's on every assignment wasn't enough to get my grade to an A. Go to PASS!!!
Just save yourself. No. Just don't take her.
SAVE YOUR SELF AND RUN. if you need to graduate late then do it and do not take her. I genuinely have never had a worst experience with a professor in my life. She will not be straight forward with you, or explain a single thing to you, because you should just know already. Its like like im in college to learn right? I should know it already!! run.
What the freak. Run. Please.
Everyone complaining and saying to run is dramatic. Just watch the videos take notes do the homework & ACTUALLY set aside time to study. She makes it clear how to do well and its on u if you dont listen. If ur a good student youll like her, if ur lazy you probs wont. Ive genuinely learned a lot. She also makes herself very available. hate is forced
Not worth it. While it's hard to mess up lab, Dr. Funck is unapproachable when my group asked for help. She would not answer any questions directly and would confuse us further. She also does not grade. It is almost the end of the semester and I still have the same grade from the 2nd week of class. Save your sanity and do not take her.
Do not take Funck if it is the last thing you can do. Her class is worth less than dirt at the bottom of your shoes. It is better to wait another semester to take a different professor than being stuck with Funck. Makes things needlessly complicated and you won't know your grade until it is on your transcript, DO NOT TAKE HER!!!!!
She's not the monster everyone on here is making her out to be but she's definitely not great, chem is just a tough class & she doesn't make it easy to do well. She has a flipped classroom method, so you teach yourself everything and do packets with a group to deepen your understanding. It's not the end of the world if you get her but try to avoid.
Kristin Funck is the worst professor I have ever encountered. She barely lectures, meaning you have to teach yourself EVERYTHING. The amount of time that I have to devote to this class is actually insane, I have a panic attack every week. DO NOT TAKE ANY CLASSES WITH HER.
She makes the lab so much more difficult than it needs to be and does not give you ANY help. She expects professional grade work that is unattainable unless you spend HOURS on your presentation. Please do not take this lab with Kristin Funck.
please no. jmu please reconsider your chemistry department.
If possible avoid taking Dr. Funck. In a bind she is an okay lab professor but she definitely makes it harder and way more unpleasant. She doesn't grade the lab notebooks for months at a time so you have no idea what you have in the course. She is also condescending and rude whenever you ask her a question in class.
Professor Funck is a great lab professor. She explained the goals of the day in each lab and was super helpful with any questions you had. Would take her again 100000%
I literally don't understand anything. I'm doing pretty bad and she is no help nothing is working out for me. Please avoid her at all costs take literally anyone else available and if she is the only one left to pick just don't even bother. Wait for the next semester or just take at community, it just isn't worth it if no one else is available.
Everyone loves to hate on Dr. Funck but she's really not that bad (I only had her for lab). She promises you will get the grade you deserve if you put effort in and try each week, which she stuck to. She will also help you if you ask and take initiative. It takes her some time to grade everything so you are unaware of your actual grade.
Don't take her
She is not as bad as everyone says. Give her grace!!! All you have to do is work hard, actually do ALEKS, and review outside of class. She is very kind when you get to know her, and she doesn't want anyone to fail. Go in with a positive mindset, and you'll be fine. You have workshop days 2/3 classes, then 1 lecture day; it is a flipped classroom.
Dr.Funck gets a lot of hate on RMP, but for lab she isn't too bad. I did take her during the new Water Lab, which had never been done before, and we had a few challenges. But as long as you communicated with her, participated, and asked questions, you are likely to do well. She doesn't grade often, so you don't know your grade. Fine other than that
Dr. Funck is a very interesting person. I've watched her sprint across the street with no cars coming (several times). Though she is quirky, her labs were interesting. Beware though she is a harsh grader and would tear our papers to shreds with vague annotations (and would expect you to know what she wanted the next time).
Please if you value your mental health just don't take this class. She is not helpful in or outside of class. Homework every night and you better be ready to STUDY. Nothing about this class made any sense. Never again.
She honestly isn't that bad. She is just quirky and not very helpful whatsoever. When you ask her a question, she gets mad and says that she taught it. She also closes her eyes every time she talks to you so be prepared its creepy af. Pretty much be ready to teach yourself. TA's are great help though
The labs are not bad with Dr. Funck, she just grades very harshly. I will say its hard to figure out what you need to do especially in 132L. Professor does not matter for lab imo.
do not take.
I think funck is very misunderstood, she wants to challenge her students. If you take her lab youll know this for a fact, she will annotate your assignments and probobly give you a C for lab papers. Although in lecture its is very heavy on aleks work, you pretty much have it every day. If you take her for lecture, then take her lab. she'll know u!!
For lab, she is really good at giving feedback in class and helping to guide you in the right direction without necessarily giving you the answer. During presentations, sometimes her questions don't make sense, but she will kind of guide you to the right answer. She's overall really nice!
Going into this year I was terrified to have Dr. Funck based on her rating on here. After having her for a full semester I can confirm she is not THAT bad. The worst part about her is that she is just an incredibly strict grader, but other than that I have truly learned from her.
On the bright side I trauma bonded with some people from this class and have been friends with them ever since.
Actually the least helpful professor i've ever experienced. She does not know how to explain things to you and expects you teach yourself all the material. Flipped class so if you don't want to teach yourself DONT take it. Class is so hard and she makes it way harder pick any other professor for chem 131
Dr. Funck is the worst professor I've had at JMU. She does not teach so if you decide to take her be prepared to teach yourself and deal with a huge workload of ALEKS homework. My Chem Lab professor taught me more in one class than she did in a whole unit. Extremely unhelpful. Don't take her.
I took her for lecture for 131 and 131L and I got a 15 point higher grade in lecture than lab… she grades incredibly hard for lab and openly tells us that she's holding us to such a high standard that most won't meet. She told us that getting an 80 on NOTES for a lab was going to be incredibly hard to do
Don't be afraid if you have her and you read all these reviews. Gen chem is supposed to be hard its a filter class. She teaches you in a way that helps you if you have other chem classes to take. if you go to office hours shes more than welcome to help you. really sweet lady when you get to know her just super passionate about chem
This class is a lot of work, but its really not as bad as everyone makes it seem. I struggled with chemistry so much in hs, but go to her office hours, smlc (to do assignments), and pass sessions (if needed), and you quite literally cannot fail. Obviously if you cheat your way through the hw you're going to struggle. So don't procrastinate!!!
I cannot tell you how many mental breakdowns I had for this class. Do NOT take her, and I mean that from the bottom of my heart. PASS saved me. If you have to take this class...do anyone but her.
Dr. Funck is not as bad as people say. She has a sense of humor and although she's rather blunt in her way of speaking, she is helpful. She's a very harsh grader but I'm assuming she has a steep curve at the end of the course because despite my consistent 70's-80's on most assignments I finished with an A. Wouldn't be my first choice, but she's ok.
She was nowhere near as bad as I thought she was going to be. PASS was fantastic and literally carried me this semester. I had an A for most of the semester then my grade dropped to a B because of the ACS final so I would say def study up on that because it wasnt like her tests at all. Attend PASS and youll survive!
