Great teacher, very interesting and easy class!
Lectures could be more interesting, but overall she's great. Tells you what you need to know and really does want you to succeed in her classes. :o)
A great professor. She knows the material extremely well, and her pro-student attitude is greatly encouraging.
Hottest prof at UNBC
Nice prof who knows her stuff, but sometimes tries too hard to get students into discussion that leads to exactly where she wants to go, which doesn't always work out. Then again, you can't get blood from a stone...
Kinda hated this class for the first few weeks, but she's done a fairly good job of teaching, and reminding me that I actually used to like this stuff at one point. Still wouldn't major in it though.
bad prof, doesnt really seem like she has a plan for each class, seems like she is just winging it all the time, also a very feminist taste to her lectures
She knows her**** which makes the class just that much better, the quizes are stupid and pointless, but the homework is fun.. how many classes can you say that for??
Her classes can be very monotonous and uninteresting unless you are going for an anglish major. What she wants in essays is hard to decipher as she doesn't lay out a clear outline.

This course was much better than its "sister" course, English 211. Dr. Guest, although a little dry at times, teaches you a lot if you have the time to listen. Only complaint: Too much reading - most of which was not covered or covered in debth. Pretty good prof, though.
Terrible Prof.
Fun class, good discussion and the hour and a half always went by fast. She encourages class discussion which is nice and covers texts that are interesting and remind one of their childhood. Excellent prof.
Great classes, I actually go to these ones on a regular basis. Although some of the books are . . . not good novels to read quickly.
i like kristin alot, she is one of the better english profs at UNBC for sure.she is approachable and friendly. she initiates discussion well and is good at pointing out major themes in the texts (which are quite long btw)
She's one of the best professors I've ever had.
WORST prof at UNBC. Should be sacked for the improvement of the institution.
Great proff - helpful and encouraging. Absolutely adorable, too...there's a reason so many guys take here classes
Oh come on, she's good if you DO something
One of the most supportive and friendly individuals you will find at any institution in Canada, let alone UNBC.
She has lots of energy. She has good sense of humour. She reminds me of high school teachers who pick favorites however. Those of us who have lives and little time to suck up don't do so well - even with effort.

Oh please! I didn't think it was even remotely possible for someone to kill my enthusiasm for the Harry Potter novels, but she managed to do it. Perhaps that's what some consider to be talent.
Excellent
Really interesting, good information, clear, and a fair marker
Awesome. A very enjoyable class. She's lots of fun.
HORRIBLE TEACHER!! If she likes you * ie you suck up well you'll do okay in her class, if she hates you ie you dont show up to class or dont participate but instead sit and listen you will do very poorly.* DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH HER!
I love Dr. Guest, she challenge me which keeps me intrested, her classes are so worth the long readings. One of the best English Professors at this school
Like right! There's no room for student opinions when the class is filled with a professors ego. And if you're going to play favorites, you shouldn't be so obvious about it.
Excellent, hard working, compassionate and extremely fair.
She is pretentious and loves to hear herself talk. On her papers she really only wants to hear her own opinions regurgitated to her, despite what she says. She isn't a terrible teacher, but requires a lot of effort to be put in with quizzes and such.
she has favorites. if you dont talk in class youll do****ty. lame tests every couple weeks too. lectures are rambeling and her voice is a little annoying.
wow. terrible.
Classes are fun and fair. Sometimes the reading seems very heavy but, of course, that's indicative of the time period she's teaching from. The complaints over the quizzes are soo silly. They are worth peanuts to your total mark. Just do the readings people or?guess! PS Maybe if you actually showed up for class and participated in the discussion you
Very unfair professor. You try to go to her for help and her advice is "sometimes you just have to accept a poor grade." That is NOT a helpful attitude for someone who is paid to teach you!!!
Despite other comments i found Dr. Guest to be an amazing teacher she is full of imagination which many lack today. I found her to be very approachable. She pushes you to become a better writer and encourages those who wish to write.
I've taken many classes with her and she's always been my favorite. She's very clear and knowledgeable about her chosen time period. She keeps class interesting and she is relatable. In 4th year you don't get stupid little quizzes but they sure keep you up on your reading which I think is a good thing. It sucks that people get mad at the professor
Best teacher I've ever had. Lectures are interesting, she engages students, she designs reading schedules around big texts so that students aren't overwhelmed, and she generously helps students outside of class time. There is often a queue of students outside her office seeking advice on subjects pertaining to a course as well as academia at large.
Okay. Not as great as some say she is.
uh....those ques are becuz nobody can understand anything she does in class and that youneed to talk to her well in advance of any assignment if u ever hope to get a decent mark. this one looooves to here herself talk, but is vapidly insecure about being an authority figure.
Best prof at unbc. She makes class interesting and encouages discussion. She's very nice and easy to get help from. If you put in the work you will do well.
Class was good, but I hated her.
I really appreciated this class even though I heard all sorts of horrible things about her. I'm glad that I waited and made my own judgement. I've taken two courses with her and I'll be taking another next semester :)
This particular professor is very unfair when marking, does not make clear what the quizzes and tests are made up of, and does not help you in any way when you need that one on one time or when you have certain questions. I, without a doubt, do not recommend her to anyone I know, for she will rip apart your dreams and wishes to further your educati
Not the most exciting prof, but she is enthusiastic and has a good sense of humour. Found the assignments clear and fairly easy - quizzes were an easy way of making sure everyone read the material.
Overall, not interesting. Don't like the course and don't really like her teaching style. I find it hard to listen to lectures and she doesn't clarify what she actually wants within the quizzes and essays. Also, she doesn't like to use the internet for much other than webmail. Which is extremely annoying.
Too quick to belittle, marginalize, and silence students. e.g. I criticized "Eve's Apology" in class because it depicts Eve as alone with the Serpent when Genesis 3:6 states that Adam was with her. Guest glared down her nose at me and declared that Eve WAS alone (uh no), then accused me of enabling biblical sexism. Right.
She's wonderful. Dr. Guest is very interested in the subject matter and very excited to be teaching. She is open to class questions and comments, and makes herself available to talk to students. She obviously puts a lot of thought into her lectures and assignments, they are clear without being rigid. I will try to have her for more classes.
Dr. Guest is a great professor. Her lectures are well organized, and you can tell she really loves what she teaches. The quizzes were super easy, and she marked assignments fairly. I really enjoyed her class and look forward to taking more in the future :)
So far I've taken two courses with Dr. Guest. I find her to be an incredible instructor who is clearly passionate about her field of study. In regards to marking, her quizzes are easy. You do the readings, you get the marks. She's not too harsh with marking essays either. She's flexible and willing to help. I'd recommend her to any English major.
GUEST IS THE BEST! by far my favourite proff. her teaching style is amazing and she cares so much about the topics that it makes me care. I Loved this class... and it was 18th century literature, not my favourite topic initially, but know I have come to appreciate it.
She's a terrible professor. I could see how she could handle 100 level courses intended for non-majors that are just cramming information by rote, and that don't require any creative interpretation of source texts, but she has no business teaching in the upper division.
Disappointed. She was unhelpful and almost rude at times. I wanted to like her.
Boring. To contextual, not enough talk about the literature.
She's a great professor. Very helpful, but still challenging. You have to work hard but the effort is worth it in the long run. I've always found her classes fun and entertaining.
Hands down best prof I've ever had. I would take every one of my English classes with Dr. Guest if I could. I love her teaching style, and she is very helpful if you actually have an idea in mind- she definitely does not hold your hand. If you put in the effort, you will get the grade.
Guest knows her stuff, period. Definitely show up to class if you want to stay on her good side.
Attendance makes no difference if she doesn't like you from the get-go. Unhelpful and very egocentric, not a desirable learning environment. Would NEVER take her class again.
She is fantastic and interesting and keeps things relevant. You will want to read your books for her classes
Great professor overall
Dr Guest really knows her stuff, and is willing to help loads if you ask her. She'll walk you through the planning of your essay and offer good feedback when she marks it. However, she spends a lot of time discussing context in her classes and less time on the actual literature, which makes the lectures feel rather dry.
Kristen is a wonderful professor. She is extremely well-educated and is a great lecturer. She really includes students and gives you the opportunity to present lectures of your own in upper division classes. I have learned a lot in her classes both academically and personally.
Guest is very good at the variety of classes she teaches- everything from Children's Lit to Victorian Lit. There are a lot of readings and planned quizzes every other week, which helped a lot with keeping the texts straight. She's tremendous for getting help with essays, but she looooves her context. Which is kind of boring after the 10th time
This was my first 4th year class with Guest and it was really great. She is phenomenal in a seminar setting--still letting the student group lead the discussion, but still contributing to discussion. Her class readings all connect really well together. She also is amazing for helping with papers! Would recommend any of her classes!
A typical Guest class. Interesting, full of (at times, too much) context, and challenging. But definitely not bad! You learn a lot and she is always willing to help with papers and presentations. Do the readings and you will be good to go.
Guest covers the Victorian era well throughout all her classes, but I really enjoyed this one in particular. Sensation fiction is hilarious and interesting, and Guest really gets into the novels and that makes learning about them more fun. Stay on top of the readings, be aware Victorians are anxious about everything and you'll be fine.
I loved Kristen's Victorian Literature class; I thought she was witty, contextual and fun to discuss readings with. I will say this: do not expect an easy pass. She makes you work for it, but in the end you come out of her class actually having learned something. I wish the readings weren't quite as long, but that is characteristic of Victorian lit
I really enjoyed her. She is good at communicating expectations and interesting to listen to and talk with. She is good at encouraging conversation about the books. Excellent book choices.
Classes were based entirely around group work. If you don't mind presenting you should be okay. Her tests were very ambigious, but she explained the final about two weeks in advance.
Best teacher I had at UNBC
Teaches the content well enough, but the lectures were a drag, so many students would fall asleep or just not pay attention and it felt like the class went on forever. She has quizs every once in awhile to test content, basically making sure you are doing all the readings. Shes also kind of passive agressive which was off-putting for me
Kristen Guest was a good choice for an English teacher, and she knows her material. It was not difficult to get a decent mark in this class. As long as you show up, say a couple of things, and read the books, you'll do fine.
She is a great instructor. Her lectures are interesting and she focuses on helping students to build skills and develop analytical abilities. She maintains a good balance between lecturing and class discussion. She is also extremely helpful with essay writing and will give lots of help if asked. She clearly wants students to do well.
Dr. Guest was a poor lecturer online, I didn't learn a thing from her lectures and she was very harsh on grading as well. Will never take a class with her again
Challenges and pushes you in a way that makes you better. Really focuses on helping you develop skills for the future. I felt like I actually learned a lot about how to analyze literature. Weekly participation helps you stay on top of the class. Only downside is she does some group work but that is a personal dislike
every time I've reached out to her for help she's been actively dismissive. if she doesn't like a question you have she'll just respond with "that was discussed in class". This class also has a really annoying aspect where you need to write a response to a question every single week which is tough with other classes.
She's dismissive at best and downright rude at times. I wanted to like this class going into it and the content was fine, but the professor made this my worst class experience yet.
The key to Dr. Guest is consultation. She marks essays easier if you work with her on them. On a proposal, I got feedback (lots still to work on) and so I made the adjustments and asked her if she'd take a second look which she did. She said she would do that "as many [times] as [I] would like." She's intimidating but helpful. + group work heavy.
Beware, she advertises this class to students in STEM, premed/prepharm/prevet students looking for an english credit. This IS NOT an easy class, is not a GPA booster, she expects you to be able to write at an advance English major level. She's a lovely teacher, but this course is not worth the work, opt for engl 100 and 170 instead.
Hard grader.
Really do get ready to read - my gosh. However, Dr. Guest cares about her students, and even after bombing a few initial papers (which should have brought my grade way down), because I participated and made an effort, I ended with a good grade at the end. You just have to try, and she will see it and reward it.
