Taking her for the Poly Sci 101 class in summer. It's an intense 6 weeks but class is fun, She LOVES what she's teaching. Talks fast and skims through alot but read ahead and you'll be fine.
Kristen is a wonderful instructor! She is very helpful and makes sure everyone understands before moving on. Although the tests are difficult, you can make up any lost points with the abundance of extra credit. I strongly recommend her. I learned so much in this class :)
O man, she was seriously the coolest teacher I ever had at that school. Their is no way you can fail this class, she gives out extra credit, which is a major plus. She is the #1 teacher teaching in that school.
Kristen is probably the best teacher I have ever had. She not only works in the field she teaches, but she takes the time to help out any student in need. There is no way to fail this class, because she gives deserving extra credit to all students. I finished off with 98 extra credit points! She is awesome and I would rec. her to any and EVERYONE!
She's a great teacher. Lots of extra credit points available. She really likes politics and teaches it so that we understand it. Tests can be hard but read the book and you'll do fine.
Kristin is an AWESOME instructor!! I LOVE HER!! She works in her field, passionate, loves what she does...great lectures, great PowerPoint lectures, easy instructor! Offers extra credit, impossible to fail her class, exams are not hard...if you study and know your material, but she does a great job explaining! I got an A in her class...
I took her online class and she was great. I learned so much in her class that it was amazing! I would advise anyone to take her class as her discussion boards were interesting and the reading was, too. She's very easy going and helpful all throughout the class. She grades quickly and responds to questions quickly. Take her class and enjoy!
Great teacher! Took her class in the summer and was a lot of work, but pretty easy. She talks really fast and laughs at herself a lot. Sweet lady, wish she taught more classes.
This class was very informative. You need to stay on top of your work required in class and do ALL the extra credit available, and there is quite a bit to get an A. She is off the hook at times and you wonder why she is not in D.C. lobbying for some cause, but overall she knows her stuff and is very approachable. There is a major paper in the class
I really liked the way she tough. VERY straight forward. Basically no homework but she did have one 8 pg research essay. Study for your quizes and you should be able to sneak by with an A. She also gives extra credit!! DO IT!

Kristen is great! She's super easy to understand and makes her class fun! Material can be hard, depending on your interest level. The first exam is the hardest then they get easier from there. She gives TONS of extra credit and has a major paper, but no homework! PAY CLOSE ATTENTION to her power point slides and you should get an "A" (I did).
Interesting overall. Easy access to teacher with fast responses. Study guides for tests very helpful. Tests are pretty hard & covers LOTS of material. She likes essay quests. Work load for class VERY HEAVY (about 7-10 hrs per week)! 10 page APA Term paper mandatory. Weekly homework consists of discussion boards, lab, essay questions, reading....
Kristen was a great teacher. I took her online class. There was a lot of work but I learned a great deal more than I ever expected. She is very clear with her assignments & what she expects. Major paper but she will offer suggestions for revision if turned in early. She requires at least one DB a week but she got involved in every one.
Great professor! Funny and approachable. The class can be tough at times, but she always makes herself available for questions. Exams are long but fair; in fact, in my class, we reviewed right before taking it!
ONLINE:Work load: Read 15 text chapters and instructor's own lectures in PDF and Powerpoint; 20 discussion boards required(own thread + 2 replies each); 4 units of running homework 14-20 pgs. (each) in essay style; 10 MyPoliSci.com simulations + 10 questions following (each); 4 internet study assignments; APA term paper 8-10pgs.; 4 exams + final.
Instructs students to ..."use own words to define and explain"... then downgrades for not using the exact textbook phrases for answers in the Final Exam! Deadlines should be strictly adhered to in each and every case. If student has not completed English 101 with a passing grade, I would NOT recommend this professor. Work to Unit ratio is too high!
Took it online, this was a fairly easy class if you just do what is asked of you. The work itself isnt hard, just have to be willing to put a little time into it and do all the work. Do this and get an A with little stress. There is a paper at the end dont do it last minute. She grades it fair I got 100% on it and Im not amazing at research papers.
I think she is a great teacher! I took her online class. However, because she is a great teacher, does not mean she is an easy teacher!!! She has many requirements you must meet. There is a lot of reading throughout the textbook and hw assignments. As long as you do the work and study you should do fine. Interesting, Challenging, learned a lot! :)
I took her poltical science 101 class, she was funny and had a mouth like a sailor. She was tough, but manageable. There was an 10 page research paper due and a lot of homework She study guides are like the test. study and ull get a good grade. I thought of dropping several times but got an A surprising just email her if need be
very humorous and wants the students to understand she is clear and is very friendly, and she motivates students. study guides are over extensive but if you study and show up to class to hear her lectures you will get an A. i love her she is awesome!
good overall. don't wait till the last second for the research project though. the study guides are really big, you just got to study a lot for the tests.
loved her! she was a great teacher! she made class very interesting and was very passionate about the topic. Shes a straight forward teacher. aslong as you do the assignments well you will get a good grade. very reasonable
Extremely helpful and very fair.
Great Professor all around! Very helpful and seems to love teaching Poli Sci.
I was extremely apprehensive about taking a political science class but Kristen Huyck was beyond helpful, clear, and concise in her instruction. I barely read the lectures and did the HW and DB's just fine. I highly recommend K. Huyck for a first time PS student!
Kristen is the best! She is super funny & makes political science fun. Her tests are big but she makes lecture relate-able and easy to understand. I didn't buy the textbook and still got a B. Highly recommend!
Kristen was incredibly helpful throughout this course and she always made herself available when need be. Attending her study sessions would be very beneficial to you because she gives you test questions(especially the short answer). The coursework is pretty heavy and time consuming so I wouldn't recommended her if you don't have the time required
DO NOT TAKE THE ONLINE CLASS, SO MUCH WORK!!!I WISH I WOULD OF TAKEN THE PHYSICAL CLASS!!!
I took her online class and met her during the learning service.online wasn't bad however students need to put effort on their home works. She gave a lot of home works that can help you pass the class and extra credit as well. She gave 50 multiple choice and 50 short answers in the test. She also gave study guide in the test.
This was overall a fun class and Kristen made it even more appealing. The coursework is indeed heavy; however, it is manageable. If you do your part there is no way you can not get an "A". Tests are straightforward and a study guide is given.
Be prepared to do a lot of assignments!! Do not procrastinate. She grades fairly and responds quickly via email or DB. Do the work and use the study guide she provides, easy "A". provides a lot of extra credit. Awesome professor!
If you have no interest in politics, I highly suggest choosing another professor (Searl-Chapin). Lots of work for someone who doesn't understand politics and who is opinion based. She is a political representative as well as a political teacher. She knows her stuff. If you love politics, this class is for you. If not, do not take her.
She's a great teacher, As a Poli. Sci. major I enjoyed her class. She grades very fairly, and doesn't assign any busy work. Her basic course outline is only 3 large assignments and 4 tests.
She's an amazing teacher. Tbh I missed many Tuesdays in my TTh but always got good grades. If you understand her teaching ways and actually study you will do great. Her tests are made up of multiple choice (what she called multiple think) and short answer questions. I would so take her again!
Loved this prof
Professor Huyck is the real deal. She is highly educated but not pretentious. She wants her students to succeed and is helpful. She is a great teacher in that she keeps class interesting and funny. She changes things up so its not predictable. You know from day one what is expected and when assignments are due. Tests are lecture based so show up.
By far my favorite instructor yet. Tough but fair. Very personable.
She is amazing, and hands down the best educator I've had recently. She is very helpful and there is no way you can't pass her class. Especially if you work toward her field experiences and ALL the extra credit. Many opportunities to strive for a high GPA here.
Hip young teacher who can relate to her students. Very approachable. Easy way to fill the polisci requirement. She has practice sessions directly before tests in which she quizzes you on all the test questions, so if you attend those you'll get A's on the tests. I had class on Halloween evening and she brought pizza and candy for the students.
Makes political science fun, even at 8am.
She is a great professor! However, I feel as if her study guides do not match up to the test. 4 exams and 3 assignments
I by no means can say her class is easy, however the amount learned is impressive. The instructor is easy to reach and overall excellent professor. As with any online course, there is a lot of work but the course was laid out in a straightforward fashion and easy to navigate. Wish she has more classes.
Assigns ALOT of busy work that doesn't really teach you how government works. You have the option of volunteering at a facility of your choice for 10 hours or write a 10 page essay. Tests are tough and not a lot of things are covered in lecture. She's smart, funny, and helpful, yet expects too much and I didn't have a great grasp on American gov.
Hard instructor with a great deal of work. But the amount of learning is huge. Felt like she was face to face -- would always check in and follow uo
Her gov and political science classes are like any other, except for one CRAZY rule. If you miss ANY of your exams, you will automatically be given an F. Even if you've racked up enough points from other assignments to get you an A, she will still fail you because of that missed test. She doesn't mention it very much either, so just be aware.
She's an outstanding professor. She assigns all of her unit homework in "packets" meaning she has various assignments due on one date, rather than weekly. She also offers tons of extra credit and didn't make the course too difficult. The only thing I had trouble with was getting responses via email when I had questions; however, I recommend her.
Kristen is made the class very enjoyable. You must do all assignments to pass with a good grade, but all of the assignments are really easy. Class isn't mandatory, but she explains a lot in her lectures, and she's hilarious so it's worth going to class. This class is an easy A.
Loved this class! Interesting homework that gets you thinking and involved. Easy A with all the extra credit offered. Tons of reading! She gives "study questions" every week that are the exact questions in the short answer test portion. Complete these during the week so you're already ready come test time (its timed). Highly recommend!
She teaches, which is what some teachers do not do. She gives you a clear description of what she asking for you to do in papers and will give you clear feedback. You will learn in her class but plan to study 8-13 hrs per week. She respects your ideas and opinions. She is the best teacher you'll ever have.
Professor Huyck is a caring professor who comes into class everyday ready to engage her students. She listens, respects, and values all input and does not talk down to you if you give a wrong answer. Her study guides give the short answer questions that will be tested on. Before each test, she allots and hour for in-class study session games.
Prof Huyck is ready to engage her students in learning. She mindfully values student input and does not talk down to you if you give a wrong answer. She is a highly educated passionate teacher, but not pretentious and wants her students to succeed. Gives clear instructions and her study guides include the test short answer questions. Highly rec.
You will get a good grade if you read and do all the work. She makes it easy if you make it easy on yourself. The course is interesting and I would take it again!
She is a good professor as long as you participate on all weekly discussions and turn in all your home works on time she'll give you full credit. Most of her tests are from the textbook and she gives you a study guide. Participation is vital. She respond fast on e-mails. I had to do the extra credit to get an A on this class and she'll remind you.
Professor Huyck is fantastic. There was alot of homework, but it was a 6 week class. She gives amazing feedback and is there for you when you have questions. Lectures were fun. The push with the homework was great. I loved being pushed to get the job done.
If you want the A, you will have to work hard for it. Kristen gives homework that requires higher-level thinking skills. Although it was one of the hardest classes I have taken, it was BY FAR one of my favorites. I learned a ton, and for the first time in my life, I actually understand what's going on in the news!
You can pass with an A if you put in the effort. Deadlines are set, so do not fall behind. She gives extra credit. Tests are from the textbook and the study guide helps a lot!! She is funny and I could hear the passion she has for this subject. Good professor to take for Political Science.
Great online professor! She cares deeply for her students and is willing to help them succeed in the class. This was an online 6 week course. It covered a lot of information, but she gave online lectures where questions could be made. The class consisted of 2-3 assignments per week and two quizzes, a term-paper option, and final.
It was easy, weekly assignments and timed tests not proctored so that was good. You would either have to attend a video chat/lecture and participate to get points, or watch the recording and do a write up. It was always easier to "attend" the live lecture and participate but she kept switching the date and times around which was annoying
Great instructor. Plan on working for your grade but know that you will walk away with a vast amount of knowledge and new perspectives.
I like the way she structured the class. Hw is due in units the week of the test and usually consists of 3-4 assignments per week. She does live micro lectures on Sundays at 7pm and they take the place of DB posts if you join. Her assignments require research, but are fun. Read the rubric if you want to get full marks on assignments!
Excellent professor. Assignments were clear and the difficulty was mid-range. The assignments are interesting and if you take the class online she does a live lecture on sunday evenings: which lets you skip doing the discussion boards each week. Be sure and read the rubric for each assignment and do the extra credit work it does add up.
(I Took PS101 Online Class). Amazing teacher, expect a lot of reading to get a good grade, but the class does leave you with a stronger understanding of Political Science. :)
An amazing teacher who knows what she is teaching and cares about every student. I learned so much in this class in just a span of a couple of weeks. I recommend paying attention to your readings because doing so would help greatly with the assignments. I enjoyed this class, and I believe the hours spent on this class will pay off in the end!
Lots of work and so much work for such little points
Makes a class that seems very difficult, easy. I am not a person for Politics at all, but she makes this class easy to comprehend, gives a lot of work, but it is not overwhelming. She gives good feedback, and is has clear grading criteria. Would take again. 5/5 (also very friendly and responds quickly to emails)
Its hard not to pass this class; Im one of those people who do minimum in school but this class was so easy although there was a lot of projects its almost hard to fail. I almost passed this class with 100% because again, if you dont like her and her class youre PROBABLY NOT TRYING. Shes sweet and always willing to help! Take her!
Great teacher especially for a subject that is not very interesting. She gives a lot of extra credit and her quizzes are easy. I would take her again.
Kristen was a great professor. I did the online class & I really appreciated the online video lectures. It made for a better understanding of the topics. She also provided study guides for tests that were very helpful. She required a term paper or service learning option. I wish I could have done the service option but it didn't work w/my schedule.
You can attend online on Sundays or you could do the discussion board instead. Tests are easy if you know the topic. She is an easy grader. There is one big essay that she grades fairly. Homework is due every two to three weeks. Just keep up on your work and you'll do great.
Shes great! By far one of my favorite online professor I've ever had. The homework is due every three weeks or so, if you cant attend class you can still do the discussion. Shes an easy grader. Responds to emails and questions fairly quickly. I really enjoyed her class.
She is an awesome professor. Definitely would take her again!
She's alright. She doesn't answer questions very well. If I asked something in the discussion form I would get a response that was only vaguely related to what I asked. She was also a really tough grader on my term essay. A lot of the homework assignments felt like busy work too and did not do anything to further understanding of the content.
Lots of opportunity for extra credit which in hind sight i wish i did, but if you pay attention in lectures and read what you need you shouldn't have any issues.
An online class with live lectures (though there is an optional assignment if you aren't able to join in on Sunday evenings). Professor is funny and passionete for teching. Responsive to students with a passion for teh subject.
An online class that feels like face to face. The inscructor made the class feel like she was guiding and supporting the learning process every step of the way. Discussion boards were an alternative to attending a live micrl lecture. Also held office hours in case we got stumped
Professor Huyck is very passionate about political science. If you are willing to do the work, the class is an easy a. She is very caring and is willing to answer ANY question at any possible time of day. I highly recommend.
I highly recommend her, Mrs. Kristen is very kind and her class is really easy. I took his class online and I only had to deliver 4 homework assignments a week and she provides quite extra credit. In addition, the most important assignment is the term paper that is worth half the grade. She is really nice!
The homework is easy and due every 3 weeks. As long as you dont wait until the last minute it's an easy A. Also, if you turn in the homework before the due date you can always resubmit for a better grade. Great online class to take.
For the online class a book is needed but honestly you can pass without it. Attendance is required at the lecture but she does give alternative assignments if you can not attend. Not too much work and she gives reasonable time to take big tests.
I read her syllabus & thought this was the worst class but I was wrong. If I could have a professor like her for every class I would. She responds to messages, offers a TON of extra credit, & has clear grading. She is also very sweet and passionate about PoliSci. I HATE politics but she made it enjoyable. HW due every 3wks and grades well. TAKE HER
Dr. Huyck does care about her students. She offers Mirco lectures twice weekly throughout the semester every Sunday at 2 pm and 7 pm for us since many of us need to work. Those lectures were "live" lectures" and it tells us how much works that Dr. Huyck had put into the course for us. She cares about her students! Highly recommend this professor!
By far one of the best professors I have had yet! I was not too into the subject but had to take it for credit. I am glad I picked this professor, she is so knowledgeable and actually cares for her students. There were weekly meetings and she would go over the chapter and ask questions and she would check on us, and let us know she was here for you
Prof Huyck is very inspirational and caring person. She would give feed back on every work you submitted that tells me she really gives time read my essay-type answers. Tests are easy because she explains and gives lectures. I love how she always reminds us of our upcoming tests and term projects. Over all, she's a wonderful teacher!
Prof. Huyck is amazing! She gives great feedback on all assignments and exams. She gives points for the level of effort you put into the assignment and will give feedback on anything you got wrong. She makes this class easy and fun. I was dreading PS but I am grateful for a teacher like her. Her lectures are funny and informative. Great teacher!
Professor Huyck is so sweet! She cares about her students and makes sure that were all doing good. Her assignments can involve a lot of reading but its not bad at all. She gives amazing feedback on assignments and exams and offers lots of extra credit. Shes also unbiased when teaching which is really nice coming from a polysci class.
Strict on deadlines. No late work accepted. Responds to emails, questions, and/or concerns quickly. Professor Huyck is tough but fair and is sympathetic towards student's challenges and workload. Communicate with her and she will help you out!
Strict on deadlines. No late work accepted. Tough but fair. Responds quickly to emails, questions, and/or concerns. Cares about the success of her students. If you communicate with her she will graciously help you out!!
Professor Huyck is an amazing teacher 10 out of 10 i would recommend to first time college students. She is kind and understanding. She provides great feedback on all assignments. TAKE HER PS101 CLASS!!!!! I took it in a 6 week summer course so a full semester should be 10 times easier. She doesn't except late work Do the work and you'll get an A.
I highly recommend taking this course. I took it as a 6-week summer course. Lots of homework but not hard at all. She doesn't accept late work but offers the most extra credit I have been given. She offers awesome feedback on every assignment you turn in. 10/10 reccomend.
Very strict on due dates and assignments, but has excellent communication. Will give you feedback if you ask and will also give you extra credit if needed. Will assign a lot of homework, but they are easy to do. I recommend doing each assignment a day before instead of last minute. She will also give feedback on essays before the due day.
I took her in the summer so there was a tighter time crunch than it would've been in other semesters, but I still learned a lot and she was accommodating. She occasionally does Zoom meetings and they are engaging and informative. She does give good feedback on assignments as well. If PS or POLSCI is not your strongest, take her.
Her layout on canvas was atrocious but something I could handle. Attendance not mandatory but you will have a discussion board (10pts) if you don't show up to her lectures. Homework easy, quiz easy, and the learning project was easy since I did community service. Guaranteed A if you do the work, I missed a few assignments.
Took her for a summer course, so it was very fast paced and lots of homework was due frequently. Even with the heavy workload, the course was easy to get through as long as you don't wait until the last minute to do assignments. There was a term paper requirement but also an option to do community service in place of it.
Took her Political Science class in Summer, and it was surprisingly easy. I was nervous about having too much homework however the homework load wasn't that much. It was usually 3-5 assignments a week and plenty of extra credit assignments.
Huyck is really nice and welcoming. I'm taking her online-only class and it's a lot of reading but it's bearable. Usually I would find politics and government boring but her explanations and the book we read from were easier to understand than other classes.
Professor Huyck clearly wants her students to succeed. I took her class during the accelerated 8-week summer sessions. Her assignments were moderately easy, and this followed with all tests. There is a strict no late work policy, however this should not be a concern as the workload is not heavy.
Clear grading criteria plus great extra credit. The lectures were fun and engaging. Work was turned in as packets with no late work accepted, but the work wasn't hard as long as you didn't do it last minute. Would definitely take this class if you're afraid of having a boring PS class and want a great teacher.
A great class with a manageable workload. Around 3 assignments biweekly with each taking around an hour, and non-mandatory lectures every week. However, not attending the lectures will have you responding to discussion posts. There is a term paper or community service term project, but you are given more than enough time to complete it.
I took the online class and the class itself was a bit tough at first due to the amount of reading but it eased up as you get more used to it. We have 2 assignments on average (give or take) but they were fairly graded, and around monthly tests. The teacher was incredibly caring, gave great feedback, and was easy to contact. 100% recommend.
Exceptional instructor whose lectures were always clear and captivating. The homework was straightforward, and she offered plenty of extra credit opportunities. She was easily accessible and always willing to address any questions or concerns. Additionally, she provided individual feedback on graded assignments, which was immensely helpful.
The professor was always on top of it, from grading to feedback, she is extremely reliable and kind.
don't procrastinate b/c some assignments are not as straightforward as others. work is easy, just very time consuming. as long as you do your work to the rubrics to get your points, you will be fine. there is a big term project, but you're given enough time to do it, choosing between community service or a term paper. fast & clear communication
She is phenomenal and truly cares about the topic and all her students. This was a class I was dreading taking, but she made it so informative and inspirational. It not a simple A, it does require effort on your part, but the payoff is great. Hands down the best professor I have had at MSJC.
Professor was great. Don't wait till the last minute to view your assignments some might take some time like interview one person (once) and view a meeting (happened once). Doesn't accept late work but is reasonable if something happens. You must work for your grade. She has meetings online not mandatory but it's easier than the discussion boards.
She gives an ASTRNOMICAL amount of work for PS101. I am not exaggerating when I say that she gives THREE times as much work as other classes on the same level. Must write a 10+ page essay, weekly discussion board, short answer + exams, 3 more large essays on a regular basis, and EC. She cares and you do learn a lot but the amount of work is ABSURD
AWFUL! This is a PhD level course.
To any who complain about her, they want a professor that doesn't make you learn. I have taken her twice now, once in PS-101 and once in this most recent course PS-103 (not listed so chose 101 again) She has created a course load to force you to remain engaged and show you are learning. It's easy if you pay attention. 10/10 professor!
Dr. Huyck (Gonzales) is an exceptional professor. I highly recommend her. Her lectures are clear and up to date; she responds quickly, cares about her students, holds office hours even in online classes, and provides plenty of extra credit opportunities. Very caring and supportive. THE BEST!
Great Professor! She graded everything relatively quickly and the course load was verymanageablee, just make sure you're on top of everything:)
There is a decent amount of reading each week, 2-3 writing assignments and optional lectures on zoom (you are able to receive credit for participating) There is 1 project that you have plenty of time to complete over the course. I would take her class again, she is very knowledgeable and cares for her students!
