Pretty good class, very interesting. Teahcer is good, grades kind of hard, but an easy class. An easy B.
Very interesting class with great professor. Challenging and must keep up with the readings. Entails essay exams, a paper, and pop quizes but very reasonable grader, all the material is sufficiently covered. HIGHLY recommend 430 and Maher.
Great teacher. Loves what she's doing and always has a positive attitude, always willing to help. Lots of reading, but in the end, her lectures will help you understand the material. Be prepared for pop quizes.
Great professor, very nice and approachable. Easy class if you do all the reading. Short answer/essay midterm & final, pop quizzes, 5-6 page paper. Highly recommended.
Reading a MUST, pop quizes but you learn...
A great class that will teach you how to spin anything using the right metaphor, number, or cause. No wonder gov't is messed up. The Pro knows her stuff and teaches it in a vibrant and interesting way. No easy "A". ****ing ain't easy, neither is this class.
Good, knowledgable professor, but I fell asleep in most classes; gives study guide before midterm & final; easy to get a hold of her; class would have been better if I had an interest in Public Policy
Best teacher overall! She communicates great, is personable, allows any questions. Returns question emails promptly. Enthusiastic, clear. Gives all the essay Questions in the review, study that from the material and youre golden.
All you have to do is keep up with the reading which will lead to good quiz scores, participation credit, and less cramming for the final. I wished she focused more on issues than on theories but all in all a good class. You will learn. Take Her!... I got an A-
Public Policy is a better topic than State Poltics and to prove it, Prof. Maher is better than Prof. Adams.
A fantastic professor; enthusiastic and good at keeping discussions going (although not always on class material!). Readings can be difficult at time, but read them for class discussions. Got a good glimpse of what graduate school is like by taking her class; discussion-heavy and involving.
good class, lots of reading but not bad if you do it. take this class its not that hard
Dr. Maher really knows her stuff. Her lectures are so plotted & researched that it's better than how Brian Adams does his lectures & encourages the student to either go that extra step in his/her efforts w/ regard to public affairs & policy. A required course that was better than Brian Adams did in his course he taught. Thanks, Dr. Maher.
Maher is a great poli sci professor. She is so helpful and passionate about her subjects. I've taken her twice and plan on taking her again. however, beware she does do 7-10 pop quizes on top of exam, group porject, and paper. Plus 406 was the dullest class EVER, take her for something else, just don't take 406 until you are interested in subject
Great teacher, just all around fair & I learned a lot.
She's very liberally biased, but is open-minded to different points of view. Despite being very one-sided, she's very informed about immigration. She's definately willing to work with students, and is enthusiastic about this subject.
best class i ever had at sdsu.. learned a lot.. hard to get an A but worth trying
She is very articulate, makes for an interesting and enlightening class. She covers a broad range of political thinkers and does so in a non biased way that really adds alot to the class, and says alot for her teaching ability. Overall I would recomend this class with her to everyone who needs an upper division Poli Sci class.
She is a great prof.Is always available for questions.Immigration is her area of study. In the beginning you are a bit lost, but in the end, it all comes together.Class was interesting and well worth the semester. But, midterm and final are tough. The in-class policy hearing was a nice change of pace.Tough grader. If want to really learn, take her.
hard class... very hard to follow and prof. very hard grader. a lot of vary bad things and way too much pointless readings that wasted my time, go to class b/c has a ton of pop quizzes, so be ready to work, work, work!
She's an outstanding professor, brilliant, and passionate about what she teaches. However, you really need to have an interest in the subject to get a good grade. As long as you read the assignments and understand what she expects, you should at least get a B. interesting class.adapting to her testing styles is the key to success, trust me.
If anyone says that Maher's class is difficult and incomprehensible is because they don't do the work. This is college! Dr. Maher is extremely knowledgeable and helpful, take this course if you really care about learning about immigration and if you are serious about school. Dr. Maher, thanks for a great semester!!!
She is one of my favorite professors. She seemed extremely passionate about immigration issues, which made me even more interested in the class. Take the maquiladora trip if she offers it.. it was a great learning experience for me, as was her class.
Very knowledgeable and passionate teacher. Class is not easy but you will learn a lot. Fair grader and gives some extra credit. Takes attendance and has pop quizzes so you HAVE to keep up with the readings and other assignments. If you actually want to learn something in college, this is the type of class to take.
She is a great teacher. Really wants you to learn. Pop quizes, a reading due each class, grades fair. She knows her stuff and really enjoys teaching the class. The class helped with world affairs or other classes that involve globalization. take it its a good class
she has a great interest of immigration politics and now that she's the graduate advisor, LIFETIME should do a tv-movie about her.
She is a great professor. The material is interesting, and the tests (and pop quizzes) are not unreasonable.
Prof. Maher is hands down the best professor I have had at SDSU. She is engaging and has a good connection with students. Her class is a lot of work- lots of reading-, but the discussions are great and the material she picks for students to work on is generally interesting. Good sense of humor, always willing to help out, very approachable.
She's Awesome and not intimidating at all. 2-3 Scholarly articles/week w/notes + 2 big projects for the semester. Really good class and you will actually learn something.
She is a workaholic and expects students to be the same way. Assigned a writing assignment over Thanksgiving break. LOADS of reading. 2 exams, pop-quizzes worth A LOT at the end of the semester, and 1 paper. Extra credit is a joke. Write 2 pgs of an event that she approves and you can get up to 1% on that paper towards final grade.
Dr. Maher is hands-down one of the best instructors I've ever had. She is VERY intelligent and passionate about what she teaches. There's a great degree of involvment and lots of readings. She's a hard grader but if you do the readings and participate you should be fine, plus, she always makes herself available to students. GREAT class, take it.
I never comment on here but Pr. Maher deserves all these praises. I have taken a lot of classes in different schools and countries, and if you have any interest in politic or immigration, this is a MUST. She will make you want to attend every single class, and you will learn probably more than in any classes at SDSU. Amazing professor, smart, funny
She is both an amazing teacher and a tough one. She is truly passionate and very intelligent, eager to share her knowledge and test you on it. Don't expect to slide on much though: you must attend every class (and can't leave early), have to read every assigned text to pass the pop quizzes, and know your stuff - but you will learn a lot.
Professor Maher is a really good person. I found the topic of this class (basically an extension of her immigration policy class) to be extremely boring, but the style she chose to teach it was very helpful and will prepare you for grad school. Choose something you like for the final project, it WILL become your life the last week of class.
She was very helpful and made the class enjoyable. I didn't really like the subject before but after I took her class, I liked it. It shows that she really love teaching which made the class not too boring. I would recommend her.
Very helpful, nice and fair. Enjoyed her teaching style. Would recommend!
She's a really great teacher! I didn't care about the subject at all but she was extremely helpful and nice, you can tell she really wants you to do well! Attendance isn't mandatory and she puts the notes online but there are random lecture responses that you can only get the points for if you're there.I'd recommend her!
Dr. Maher is a great teacher! She is very enthusiastic and makes every class enjoyable and interesting. She is very approachable, helpful, and fair. I wish all profesors were as well as organized as her!
There is one midterm and one final. Easy A if you read the textbook and the text from the powerpoint. There's one essay that is due before the midterm and be sure to let the TA check it before you turn it in. There are 2 discussion board assignments that are pretty easy and also go to class everyday for the pop quizzes.
Professor Maher is a very passionate about her subject and is very clear in her essay and finals. As long as you pay attention in lectures and do the work you'll be good. I highly recommend this professor for Political Science.
Best teacher for this class hands down. Easy A as long as you attend class, keep up with the few assignments she asks you to do and GO to the extra credit events if there are any! Wonderful, I wish all professors taught with her amount of passion.
interesting class, good clear thorough lectures, received an 88.5 and she gave me an A-. has extra credit that can boost up your grade.maher, if you're reading this... THANK YOU
Maher is a really quirky professor and is very knowledgeable about the subject. The class is somewhat boring and a lot of information is presented. She gives study guides before each test. There are 2 exams, not cumulative, and 1 short paper.
Maher is very passionate about political science and genuinely wants her students to succeed. I despise anything political, and I fell asleep almost every class. With that said, she makes class really easy and I still ended up with a B. I recommend based off easiness, but very boring.
She is very pationate about Political Science and wants her students to succeed as long as they put in the work they need to. She lectures every class, but makes them clear enough to understand and remember. She is very good at explaining and her tests are not very hard.
TAKE THIS CLASS. Prof. Maher is so passionate about teaching Political Science. Her lectures are straight forward and she provides thorough study guides for tests. There are two tests a final and en essay that is not complicated at all. She cares about student input and is a great teacher.
She's so passionate about poli sci and she explains everything. She tells you exactly what is going to be on the tests and she provides you with a study guide as well. Attendance isn't taken but it's in your best interest to show up because sometimes she'll do lecture responses. There's a paper and discussion boards both are really easy.
This was my favorite class this semester. I found it super easy and interesting. Her lectures are very clear and concise. Just go to class and listen and you'll pass.
Prof. Maher's class is what made me decide to declare Poli S as a major. Visit her during office hours for a good conversation! This semester was the first with discussion sections, which made it much easier to grasp the material. Concepts are not hard to understand but tests can be hard if you don't study. Text is recommended, but not needed.
Professor Maher is so passionate about the subject, loved her class! You have one midterm, one essay, and one final. If you don't think you're gonna read, don't buy the text book. I barely opened it and got high B's on her tests. Her lectures are very thorough with clicker points! The essay is opinion based- easy, got a B+. I got an A- in the class
Professor Maher is outstanding! I took her immigration and border politics class and she was so knowledgeable about the subject and we even read some of her own research. She gave pop quizzes but if you did the readings you did fine! Overall wonderful class and highly recommend it!!!
This was one of my favorite classes! I was never really into this subject but she was really easy to listen to and had interesting topics. She assigns reading for practically everyday and I never did it and I still got an A. She has a couple extra credit assignments that are really easy that I recommend because I know it saved a few. TAKE HER.
Professor Maher is awesome! Great lecturer, tries to engage students, and always there to give you feedback if you need it. There are 2 tests and one essay, but the essay is super easy because we discuss the topic so thoroughly. Extra credit opportunities and clicker questions every day. Would definitely recommend to friends!
Enjoyed this class. Explains things very well and is always open to questions. Tests are kinda hard so be sure to study. Only one midterm and final and a very short and easy paper. Clicker questions so come to class. Drop your lowest clicker point day. Homework is reading which I suggest you do, many questions on reading on tests.
Professor Maher can be boring, you will love this class if you like politics, There is one midterm, one paper and one non cumulative final. There is a section class, they can be helpful and its mandatory, it counts toward your grade.
Loved this class and found it very interesting. Maher requirements are clear and only gives one midterm and a noncumulative final. As long as you do the readings and take good notes you will pass. She does offer extra credit that really does help with you overall grade so definitely do it when it's offered! She does tend to move fast with lectures.
Poli Sci is not my interest so I somewhat struggled with this class. Maher is not too tough as she only has one midterm and a final along with one paper. Gives extra credit. The breakout sessions were the most interesting part of the class
overall straight forward class and her lectures are very interesting, u must have a clicker and you get point for clicker questions. she gives lots of ec. she rounds and curves final grade and exams. exams somewhat tricky, need to review the reading and slides. slides are all online. little reading. 2 exams multuple choice, one paper on ideolagies
This class was pretty much easy, however you must go to class and discussion to receive at least a B because participation is weighted a lot in this class. I suggest going to class because i-clicker points will save your grade. For the most part exams were easy as long as you review the online slides and create a class google doc.
Maher is a funny woman, she laughs at her own jokes, but she knows what she's talking about. The class is basically two exams and a paper. Create a google doc and study her study guides thoroughly and you'll get an A. She is available in office hours to help, but if you email her she might just tell you to talk to a TA first. Would take again.
If you really try in this class you are almost guaranteed an A. Most things are almost common sense. She rounds grades by up to .5%. Overall it was a beneficial class and I would take it again. She also offers up to 3% extra credit which could help your grade a lot. Take Maher for your political science requirement!
Pretty good class overall. The paper although made my grade drop because they do grade kinda hard on those, but other than that the 2 tests are straightforward, just study the study guides she gives you, go to class for clicker points, go to discussion section for participation points and the extra credit really do help.
Maher is a really good professor. Her class is totally doable. I would've had an A if I had gone to class more, the attendance points definitely add up in the end! She gives study guides for the exams, and there's a research paper that isn't too hard. She's super helpful if you go to her office hours, really sweet lady.
Maher was overall pretty great. She made POLSCI pretty enjoyable. She had 2 midterms and a final. The study guides she gives are pretty much to a tee so I would definitely study those. I had Humberto for small section. Definitely make an effort to participate but he definitely ended up being a great and caring guy.
If you have no interest in political science, like me, do not take this class. Maher was great and made lectures enjoyable but the small group lecture was terrible. You had to discuss and do homework in order to get participation. The test were pretty hard, but she gives out good study guides. PARTICIPATION WILL SAVE YOUR GRADE. Show up to class.
She is a good professor, but I thought it was a lot of work and tough readings. Also, if you are not very interested in political science you might struggle a bit in this class. However, she really helpful in office hours and make sure you do the extra credit!
I absolutely loved her, but just hope you get a good TA because they give you about half of your grade. Lots of reading but honestly you can do well if you take really good notes and study well for tests. Never a boring lecture.
Her lectures were okay. The tests are decent if you follow the study guide. I had Humberto for my discussions class and he's pretty good. She gives extra credit opportunities so I recommend doing those.
Professor Maher is a really great person & I was happy to have her as a professor. She is very knowledgeable on many different things, and really wants to get close to her students. She assigned quite a few readings in her class that were pretty dense but she always went through them. She's always nice just don't talk in her class while others are.
Professor Maher is one of my favorite professors, she is very knowledgable and gives an interesting lecture. I was eager to learn more in her class. There is a lot of reading for the class, and I recommend not skipping any of them. As for the discussions, I got very lucky and had a very good GA, Humberto who was also very knowledgable!
Professor Maher is one of my favorite professors. The lectures were informative and the readings helped to supplement the material. The tests are pretty easy if you do the study guides she sends out. Make sure to attend both the large lectures and the discussion sections, since the discussion sections is weighted the same as one midterm.
Easy class to pass if you do the readings. Study guides clearly outlined each test and the there's one easy paper to write. It's important to go to the discussion sections since they equate to one midterm. Overall, amazing professor.
THE BEST EVER.
Maher is a great professor! I have learned a lot so far in this course. You do need the textbook for half of the semester. Then it's mostly blackboard readings. You use coursekey for attendance and quizzes. Quizzes almost every class meeting. 1 midterm of short answer & multiple choice & t/f. 1 paper on immigration policy. Final exam.
She is very passionate about the course. Unfortunately, there is less policy versus the impact effects. It is informative, but based a lot on the conditions from policy, and therefore more qualitative than quantitive. I enjoyed this class and the material, it allowed me to see the reality of US immigration and policy behavior.
Professor Maher is one of my favorite professors at SDSU. She is very in depth in her lectures, and goes out of her way to ensure that everyone in the class succeeds. She is very generous with extra credit opportunities and really wants you to learn and understand the material. Would recommend 10/10 and would definitely take a class with her again.
I absolutely loved being in Professor Mahers class. She is very caring and compassionate and makes a lot of effort explaining the lecture of the day. The lectures are based on academic readings assigned to you before so come prepared to class or youll be lost. Theres extra credit but she will give you a study guide for the exams. Loved the class
The class uses clicker and also comes with an additional small lecture class to go over the material. There are 3 tests (non-cumulative), an essay (that will be turned into through small lecture), textbook readings, and articles. She is super passionate and the slides are very straightforward with a study guide. Lectures are also posted online.
Great professor. Took her class all online during COVID-19 in Fall 2020 semester. She makes you work for your grade. 2 exams (one midterm and one final), policy brief writing assignment, quizzes, and attendance points. Attendance and READING is required as she does pop quizzes weekly. No need to buy a textbook. Tough, but fair and reasonable.
Kristen's a gem. She actually gives such good feedback on your rough drafts and is super helpful when you have a question. I got COVID and she let me drop a quiz and offered me extensions if I needed them. She's also a pretty good teacher. She knows what she's talking about, is really respectful of everyone's opinions, and she lectures really well
Not very good at teaching lower level stuff (like in POLS101). There are actually factual errors in her lectures. Additionally, the class is super content-light. Showing up to class is basically a repeat of high school, but attendance is mandatory. SO boring. I did better on the second midterm, and I wasn't showing up to lecture as often.
Professor Maher is a gem, shes very knowledgeable and her lectures are easy to follow. Participation is worth 10 percent of your overall grade, so just go to class and answer iclicker question to get your points. Very little to no homework but you do get assigned readings before every lecture. Overall great course, 3 test and 1 essay.
shes a fine teacher but its a very difficult class. your entire grade is based on your midterms basically and lectures r beyond boring. don't take if u don't care about political science, u will struggle.
Dr. Maher is a great speaker, her classes are very engaging and the content is interesting. Though there are not many things that go into your grade, the midterms and final makeup most of your grade. The class itself is heavy and the tests are pretty hard, no test corrections or anything. You have to pay attention to lecture to catch all the info.
I actually liked this class a lot more than I thought I would. It was interesting and the "homework" is some light interesting readings that get you familiar with the topic. Maher is really nice and has interesting lectures. I would recommend this class. 3 exams and an easy essay
I am a poli sci major and I thank god I got such an amazing professor for Poli Sci 101. Theres only three test and one essay which seems intimidating grading wise but the TA's prepare you really well to pass. Her lectures were so entertaining and educated, you can tell she enjoys and likes teaching political science. TAKE HER!!!
3 exams, 1 paper w/ peer reviews, readings every week, discussions every other week. Such a fun class, her lectures were thought provoking and I was hooked for a lot of them. Definitely knows her stuff and is very accessible for office hours. She even creates review sessions with the TAs. Such an amazing and helpful professor, take her!
The class is made of 3 exams and 1 paper, be read to read for the exams because her questions are very specific to the pages of reading she assigns. Fairly structured lecture and had to buy a tophat subscription (works just like a clicker but cheaper)
3 tests and 1 essay; discussion sections every other week; goes quick in lectures but posts the recording afterward; straightforward; readings assigned weekly; tests are easy if you study and she gives you a study guide before then; knowledgeable about the subject; TAKE HER
tests are mainly based on reading material. lecture is boring ASF (if you took APUSH or AP Gov in HS you have already taken this class). sometimes historical factual errors in lectures. also she leans very heavily left which can skew her info. i'm 100% liberal and it's annoying. she's super nice, but get a different prof if you can.
Professor Maher is great, you can tell shes really passionate about her field of study, and the lectures were always engaging. Theres a good amount of readings throughout the semester but theyre usually all pretty interesting. She also is really caring and wants you to do well in the class
Professor Maher is a wonderful person and an excellent instructor who is incredibly passionate about her field of expertise. 560 is not an easy class as there is A LOT of reading and mandatory attendance. However, the material is super engaging and basically seminar-style so centered around in-class discussions. One of my favorite classes at SDSU
Maher is an amazing choice for anyone new to Poli Sci. She was super respectful of all the political ideologies we went over and never advocated any specific belief except ONE: the importance of democracy. Super kind and patient, just do the readings and attend lectures and her class shouldn't be very hard.
It was really boring to not have visuals and homework was given so much it was like she had forgotten we have other classes. She was also very judgmental about the usage of note-taking on devices. The worst class I had this semester.
I loved professor Maher's class. Although the class was pretty heavy in terms of workload, she is a great lecturer and truly cares about the opinions of her students. There was three decently difficult tests that I would definitely recommend studying for (she gives you a great study guide) and one paper.
Shes extremely sweet and you can tell she loves Political Science. Though the course may be hard if you are not interested in Political Science, her office hours are great for clarification on topics and the readings and lectures are posted which help as well. She also sends out study guides that basically covers all the tests.
Although this Professor doesn't require attendance, your final grade will most definitely drop if you don't do your TopHat. I will say that she brings a lot of enthusiasm to class. Her tests are only multiple choice but some of the wording for questions were unclear.
Prof. Maher is clearly passionate about her subject. Your grade is made up of mostly tests and one essay but don't let that be a deterrent - the essay isn't bad and the study guides she provides are incredibly detailed. Attendance is required as she uses Top Hat to check in every class. Highly recommend her class!
Professor Maher was super nice and caring. The class is easy if you do the readings and take notes at lecture. She gives study guide for tests which match up directly with the things she talked about in lecture. Overall, great experience
Attendance isn't mandatory, but your TopHat grade will drop if you don't go and you'll struggle on exams. There is some homework, but it would take 20 minutes max. Discussion sections are also very helpful in getting extra help and there were some extra credit opportunities. Maher is super respectful and a great lecturer. 10/10 recommend.
Great class, she makes it very interesting. Shew gives a study guide that is very accurate for the exam. Put in the work and read the textbook and make sure to study and it won't be too stressful.
Prof. Maher's POLS101 class is engaging and manageable. With structured lectures, detailed study guides, and helpful platforms like unstuck ai, acing the exams and paper is very doable. Definitely recommend for an interesting introduction to political science.
