Very difficult class, but professor explains it very well. Tests are the hardest part of the class. If you study hard for tests and attend class regularly, you will do good.

Bigest ****- Treats you like your 2 - Not helpful - CLASS SUCKS****!!!
You think that it would be easy since it is a 100 class, but you must go to class everyday. Some things on the test she might of not covered that well.
she makes you feel like a lil kid, doesn't care if you pass or fail - she still gets paid either way
Dont take Chem with her. I never had a prob with Chem, I love the subject. If you are ok with teaching everything to yourself, youll be ok. If you go to class to learn something from the teacher, you wont with her. Not helpful and doesnt care about the student at all.
i thought the class was hard and the professor didn't help to make it any easier. she could have taught the material in a better way. she really didn't care about the students at all.
Very helpful in office hours, friendly and very nice. Incredibly helpful if you bother to ask.
Tells some pretty lame jokes, but it keeps it interesting. I don't mind her at all.
she goes very very fast, so it is hard to keep up sometimes, but if you ca take notes at the speed that she writes them, and get past that, she does a good job of explaining things in an understandable way. she gives you the work necessary to get the practice you need on what is taught in class.
She talks toooooooo fast

Easiest ****ing teacher i've ever had
This class is not what you call "hard" to begin with, but Dr. Murphy at least tries to help anyone that is having a rough time. The online homework is a little annoying, but it doesnt hurt you if you go to DIS. This class on a whole is pointless, it is high school chemistry all over again
Do not take this class. She is a total *****. She doesn't care about students and seems to hate teaching this course. Her exams are usually 10 pages long and I'm sure she is laughing as she grades them. She treats you like you are 2. Worst course I ever took at UWM!!!!!
This is one of the HARDEST classes i have ever taken! She teaches sooo fast. You have to be a good miltitasker to keep up with her assignments in class and out of class. The tests are long and there is never enough time to finish! I dont think she is a bad person, i just feel she doesnt understand that we are JUST learning this stuff. Good luck !
She goes extremely fast, and made a lot of careless mistakes.
By far the worst class I have ever taken! I had a better than 3.8 gpa going into this class and am not a slacker by any means! Exam averages of 50% ought to tell you something. Everyone I encountered from the Chem Dept. seemed terrible! TA's included. Murphy is the just the ring leader! Take any and all Chem classes elsewhere and then transfer!
worst teacher ever. she takes pride in seeing people fail.
OMG she talks way too fast! her exams are really hard too...the class average on the first exam was a 56% and she didn't even curve it. lecture is pointless she doesn't explain things well and expects you to know what she is talking about...its a 100 level class but she makes it SO difficult
She is not willing to help and is very confusing, my advisor told me not to take chem 100 w/her purposely because students have a hard time in her class, the class average on the first 2 midterms was 68 and 71 out of 100. The other professor Anja Blecking's classes had a much higher test score average- 88, and 78. If you dont know chem take Anja Bl
She is not a good professor. The class averages are in the lower 50% range. It is a 100 level class and she treats it like a 300 level. her reviews are pointless even the TA's rip on her. The material that she claims "won't be on the exam" somehow shows up, which may be why the class averages are so terrible.
The class is not easy by any means but she is not a bad teacher. She does expect you to do work outside of class and read your book; big shocker though for a chem class. Don't listen to the others, if you're responsible with your study habits you can get an A, it's just not going to come with incredible ease.
very incapable of teaching! I understood a lot of gen chem in high school, and it came easily. Murphy managed to screw up all of that and now i feel lost during most of her lectures. Biggest annoyance is how she will have timed, scored 'clicker' questions on the projector during lecture while she is teaching a concept.
For those who are going into chemistry, she is almost as good as your gonna to have it. All my other teachers except for two other ones were much worse than her. If you don't like to read the book and learn on your own, this course is not for you. If you wana attend and learn at lectures go into business or history.
Ahhh the good ol' days of chem 100. Easiest class ever if you like to read. Here's a hint for any math or chemistry class that you encounter in college, do the problems in the book and once you are done with those problems do them over again. Didn't really like her attitude in class but teaching a easy class like this will get on my nerves too.
She thinks she is speaking to people who understand her 100% of the time, in a 200-person class thats difficult. She mumbles and goes off on tangents. She is an awful teacher and I don't think anybody could teach the class worse. I wish she would give the class some slack, it's not like I don't have 4 other classes to worry about...
She just doesn't know how to teach period. Her notes dont make any sense at all and she makes us do homework that she hasnt taught us yet. Its like we have to teach ourselves everything
For a chem 100 class she makes you do alot, and is a horrable teahcer. She makes you do 3 things at once: answer a clicker question, write down notes, and anwser a question on the board. Then she tricks you on the test all the time that why the average is always below 65 and she says that is good. She looks at you stuipd when you ask her a quest
She has the tendency to make you feel about 2 inches tall when you ask a question. She speaks complete jiberish and has no idea how to teach people who aren't already chem experts. You will leave her class knowing even less than what you came in with.
Thank G-d for the curve. If she wouldn't have curved the grades, at least HALF of the class would have failed. She talks sooooooooo fast, I swear her lungs are larger than normal. She makes these stupid jokes that don't make sense, then laughs at them. so annoying. Her tests are so hard. She gives you like a panic attack everyday from all the work.
Yes, she is a difficult teacher. Her exams are very challenging and chances are the class average on the exams will be a 50%. However, getting help by going to SI people and tutors and constant practice of the online homework will help. It takes a lot of work, but you can get an A. I RECOMMEND TAKING CHEM 100 WITH HER if you plan on taking 102
Dr. Murphy is a no-nonsense commanding woman who DOES NOT CODDLE. Her lectures are fast-paced, her tests are tough as nails, and you might get lost in the crowd or get the wrong T.A. for lab or discussion group. But if you can weather the storm, you'll learn more than you thought possible in one semester.
Dr. Murphy is hard and seems tough, but she teaches her class with great knowledge and enthusiasm. if you follow along with your textbook and get help outside you can get an "A" in the class. she's willing to help with questions via email which helps. her jokes are funny if you're smart enough to get them orrelate to them. i'd take her over again
This class is ridiculous. Our averages on our exams have been between 40 and 60 percent, and I dont think any of us have any idea if we will pass.
she isn't helpful at all! she blew me off when i scheduled to see her during office hours, but not before insinuating it's my fault i'm not doing well and she's perfect. exams are super tough. she's very intimidating and moves fast. lots of online homework and studying to do well. take another prof if one is offered, definitely.
This class is insane! Dr.Murphy is passionate about chemistry however not about teaching it to students. She is extremely fast paced and looks at you like and idiot because you're not a chem genius. There is LOTS of online homework and studying. BE AWARE your other classes may suffer!!
Very tough tests, tough to understand in class, but she is the most gracious helper in her office hours.
One of the best teachers I ever had. She can be hard and she does cover things fast, but I have always enjoyed the lectures and she explains the topic material well. She is also very approachable, and I would reccommend her to all of my freinds.
one of the worse teachers i have ever had. moves extremely fast and she seems very confident that she will NEVER make a mistake
Moves really fast in lecture, but is always available either in office hours or appointment. Exams are pretty difficult and class average is always below 65%.
Hard, moves fast, and wasn't very helpful when asked to clarify certain materials taught in lecture.
you can tell her degree and interests are in research and not teaching. the book is a better teacher than she is, but she's nice. however, nice isn't going to do me any good. spent most of my time reading the book and learning myself. wouldn't recommend her.
does murphy curve the final grades?
take other prof
She moves fast, really doesnt care about your grade, and quite frankly is a poor teacher. Would never take a class with her, if she is the only prof available wait till next semester
She's a nice lady but you can tell she's to smart for her own good. She obviously prefers research to actually teaching students. If you don't understand the material, ask for help, she is more than willing. I didn't do very well on the exams but got a B on the final and a B in the class so i do believe she curves. Read the book and go to class!
This class is awful. Everyone who said you should take chem somewhere else, is DEFINITELY RIGHT. The entire department is unacceptable. This prof on particular is impossible to understand, extremely fast paced, and I had to retake this class 3 times to get a B.If you're premed,TAKE CHEM SOMEWHERE ELSE.
I was a B student before this class. DO NOT TAKE CHEM HERE. Chem will become your life and your other classes will suffer. You will have over 100 questions to answer every week, plus clickers, plus lab, lap reports, plus discussion, plus discussion quizzes, plus really hard tests, that you wont, have enough time to finish, plus quizes....ETC
terrible passed into the class without taking chem 101, wish i had now. I wouldn't even bother going to lecture if there weren't clicker questions because it doesn't help. oh and if you're a minute late you'll miss those points too--biochem was my major, not anymore
After two poorly administered exams I approached Dr Murphy to discuss my concerns with the exams content/construction as well as the course's heavy weight on exam scores. I was meet with a hostile and condescending attitude towards my legitimate concerns. Chem 102-104 will tarnish a high GPA and cause much unwarranted stress. Avoid like the plague!
Be prepared to make chemistry your life. This class was forced to be top priority for the semester. It was highly stressful but I guess you gotta do what you gotta do. You dont always have to read the book, but if you don't know whats going on, make yourself do it. If you dont, lectures are pointless. Also find a study group. It saved my grade.
She misplaced assignments i handed in, and denied me the opportunity to do them again when the end of the semester came and she finally posted the grades. Cost me a B.
Decent teacher, not the best though. She definitely graded tough. Didn't curve any of the exams or the final grade. Class averages were always a D at best; had she curved, I feel like it would've been much more reasonable.
The most infuriating class I have ever taken, and I had to drop it after about 3 days. Apparently, students were allowed to enroll whether they qualified to take it. Half the class found out they did not on the first day. Would've been nice if the professor had notified us of this earlier. Book was about $90 and unreturnable.
She expects even the most basic students to have the knowledge that she has and she doesn't slow down to clarify. Test averages are around 50-60%.
Very difficult teacher. There are weekly quizzes, which are rather easy if you go to lecture every day. Exams are impossible. But do good in lab, on the quizzes, and on all of the online homework, and you'll get a decent grade in the class. Go to lecture, and read the book chapters and do the practice problems. It helps astronomically.
She is really difficult, no doubt about that. Read your text book and pay attention in class. Very willing to help in office hours and if you get to know her. Lady is always on caffeine, I swear she starts the board on fire writing so fast. Good overall though
I went on here before the class started and was intimidated by everyone saying how difficult the class would be. The class is hard, yes, but it is Chemistry. She is way more than willing to help. Tests are not difficult if you do the homework, go to discussion, and try. She knows her stuff and wants to make sure you do, too.
If you read the textbook and keep up with assignments, you should get an A in this course. Roughly 40 points extra credit, and a slight curve at the semester! The exams are rather difficult, but they prepare you for the ACS final. It is a lot of work but Murphy helps you in office hours as much as she can. She's very witty and serious about chem.
Exams are very difficult but they prepare you for the final. This class takes a lot of work to do well in but if you grind it out, you will get an A. Exam scores are in the low 60's, but there is 40 points of extra credit offered and a possible curve. Murphy blazes during class, so you'll be reading your book a lot to keep up. Just try your best.
Honestly one of the hardest classes I have ever taken. At the same time, if you really work hard, youll do well. Use her office hours as much as possible. She flies though material in class, so read ahead. this is NOT a slacker class.
Terrible teacher. Tests do not reflect what you cover in class. Flies through material in lecture. Not helpful during office hours. She is more interested in her research than students passing the class. Averages on all the tests were 60's. The average on part of our final was a 56. Take general chem at a different school, not here.
Terrible. Teaches entirely way too fast, isn't clear, and exams? Forget about even THINKING about passing
Your experience is going to vary based off your natural intelligence, interest in chem, and drive. I got an A in the class but worked my butt off. I think as a professor she's fantastic, although you REALLY need to be a self starter and dedicated student. Do all extra credit. Go to class regularly. See her for office hours. It's possible to do well
Without a doubt in my mind this is one of THE worst professors I have ever had. She moves very fast through lectures that don't cover nor teach anything that you need for the hw or tests. I just started this class and already wish I would have never signed up. I have no real idea what I'm doing in the class and what little i do know I taught myself
Bottom line, she has a very complicated topic to teach. And those who take chemistry can agree with that. However, she is the best chem teacher out there. She focuses on the student understanding the material rather than just memorizing. And will go to great lengths so that happens. Do the homework, ask questions and pay attention!!
Dr. Murphy is a respectable Professor in Chemistry. She has much pride and passion for her subject and most importantly she knows her material. A lot of the time it feels like she moves too fast. Do your homework, read your textbook, go to class, and ask questions and you'll do fine in the course.
Yes Chem is hard...but for a 104 level? Shouldn't be this hard. I recommend you going to UW-Waukesha over the summer, both 102 AND 104 in 8 weeks. They knew me first name basis, and I really enjoyed it their.
Professor Murphy is a very thorough and excellent lecturer. You must keep up with reading and homework to stay afloat in her class, but she is always glad to help you if you're running into problems. There's extra credit and she drops one exam. This is not a slacker class- it's for somebody who wants to solidly learn chemistry fundamentals.
She lectures really fast and her exam questions are not always straight forward making it hard and stressful to take. You have to keep up with reading and homework and also go to SI tutoring to stay on top of the class.
She is extremely intelligent but has no idea how to teach students in an introductory course. In order to do well you must teach yourself, that being said, why did I pay to be taught by a professor? She has been asked several times to slow down during lecture and she doesn't.
Alright, Murphs gets a bad rep but she has to distill Gen Chem into 150 minutes per week. She will not spoon feed you in this class. Do all the homework, do the extra credit, write down questions on post-its as they come to you and COMMIT yourself. Stop blaming her as the bad guy and just DO IT. You can! It's a hell of a class but the TAs are great
Even after this extremely difficult course, I still respect Dr. Murphy for her intelligence. However, exams were way too hard. You would have to be right out of 2 years of high school chemistry to do well. She only uses complicated versions of questions on exams. Impossible to both write and listen in lecture because of speed. Discouraging class.
Unreal the bad reputation she gets. If you want college to be easy then go to business school and stop taking science classes. People repeatedly don't prep for the lectures so of course they're lost. If you follow what she asks to do, you will learn a lot about chemistry. Great teacher who will devote her time to helping you.
Ms. Murphy is really smart i give you that but class feels like sheldon talking to penny from the big bang theory. Lost nearly every day and exams are hard. dont ruin your gpa wait for another teacher (carlson or blecking)
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS. She makes you feel stupid. I read every chapter, took notes, did homework, went to lab (and did very well in it) but no matter how hard I studied, failed every exam, and in turn the class. AWFUL AWFUL AWfUL. She is SMART but cannot teach for her life. I have never failed a class before this. She should not have a teaching job
I absolutely would NOT recommend Murphy. Every exam average is failing and the final is ridiculous. She tests on concepts she didn't cover in class and gets frustrated easily when students don't understand things. If you do well on everything else besides the exams you can still pass though because she gives a huge curve but do ALL extra credit
I LOVE chemistry, but prof. Murphy was stuck up and rude whenever I asked her a question. I did well on every test but the final did not test on the material we covered in detail in lecture, discussion, and lab. The secret to success in this class is to study your butt off, get a tutor, and ask the TA for help when needed. PS she does not curve!!!
She is all over the place when she teaches. Worst Teacher at UWM!!!!
One of my first instructors at this school and she left a bad taste in my mouth. She is rude, demanding, and speeds thru material at lightning speed. Don't expect to learn anything from her, you will be doing it all on your own! Sign up for SI and Tutoring because without these wonderful people, you have no shot of passing her intense tests.
Not a good chemistry 'teacher.' She's extremely knowledgeable and smart about the topic, but she's a horrible teacher. Worst college course I have taken so far only because I have no idea what she's even teaching in lecture (she talks too fast) and she answers her own questions in class and never gives her students the chance to ask questions.
She could be more clear and go into better detail.
She has no idea how to teach her students. Very intelligent but rushes through things and doesn't care if no one understands anything she just said. Her exams are nothing like her practice exams or work done in class. Horrible wording on exams, horrible teacher, horrible everything. Goodluck.
I love Murphy! she is helpful if you go to her office hours. also she gives extra credit for every exam or quiz. that been said, her exams are horrible, really hard, most students failed on the second one. but you can drop one exam so I guess not that bad. you can drop 3 quizzes. 102 is not an easy class and Murphy is a hard grader.
Don't expect any clarity on how to work out numerical problems, she is horrible at explaining and skips steps. I feel like understanding how to work and use the equations is the most important part of this class, but she puts no emphasis on it and expects you to just know things. How hard would it be to just write out problems? I miss Carlson.
She's definitely incredibly smart, but she should not be a teacher. She just does problems extremely fast on the board and you're kind of left to figure out why she did what. She also has group discussions in a 100+ student lecture.. isn't that what the separate discussion sections are for? Just do EVERYTHING possible to study & you'll be fine.
The worst professor I have ever had. If you have the chance, DO NOT TAKE CHEM 102 WITH HER. Her lectures are a mess, she words her exams in ways no one, not even the TA's can understand and pass them. The class is overly complicated when it could be taught in a much, much simpler way. Murphy is a smart person, she just has no right to be teaching.
Well, Murphy gets a bad reputation because students expect chem 102 to be an easy class but she has a lot to cover in such short time and that's what makes 102 seem like an impossible class. I really like her she is so smart and she makes students work harder as the class goes on. Do every thing you can and you will do great
Probably the smartest and best professor I have had here at UW-Milwaukee. If you are a good student and take care of business, you will get the grade you desire. She does a tremendous job preparing you for chemistry 104 if you just put forth the work that she asks of you. If you do not, however, you will struggle in this class.
You must be devoted to this class from day one! Professor Murphy is smart, however the lectures are so fast that it's nearly impossible to listen and takes notes simultaneously and tests are hard . I spent all my nights reading the textbook and trying different approaches to work out homework problems. Do all extra credit and work extremely hard.
Treats this introductory course as though you've been playing with a chemistry set your whole life. Test are ridiculously hard. Unless you're a chemistry savant avoid her class like you'll catch the plague.
Murphy goes really fast and doesn't really take the time to explain things clearly. It's a lot of material jammed into one semester, so she has to go fast, but man she's tough. The reason I passed was because of lab, homework, discussion, and extra credit, tests are killer.
In class, she will whiz through the materials. Don't expect too much out of lecture, but go to them! Do her lecture notes and study them! Expect to do a lot outside of class work. Make sure you keep up with the materials. Go to your TAs and her for clarification. She's great one-on-one.
This class was extremely challenging! I worked my butt off every single day to get the grade I wanted in Chem 102. Don't expect to sit back and pass the class without trying, most students who do try don't even pass. Put in the work every day, do all of the online moodle homework, and attend review sessions, they will save you in this course!
I personally don't like her a teacher because she doesn't actually explain anything. The problems we do in class are nothing compared to the exam, none of the practice problems help prepare you. I've always been really good at chemistry in the past but I had a really really hard time passing this class.
Tough grader, lectures are long and boring, teaches above a 100 level.
Her lecture was mostly confusing and everybody agreed with that. She was going too fast especially before the exam because she had to cover same on the syllabus. She was little bit tough grader and gave us bunch of online homework. There's some extra credit in the test, but you can't solve it.
Lectures are tough to follow at times; however, if you come well prepared you will be able to make the connection to concepts. Professor Murphy requires more from you; you will be challenged to think conceptually and forced to relate concepts together to succeed. Go to office hours if you want (3.0)
She is one of the worst teachers I have ever dealt with. Even if you set an appointment with her she wouldn't respect your time and effort that you actually showed up! she would make you feel like you were wasting her time and she had better thing to do! The class material isn't hard but she makes it hard by all the unnecessary extra work!
There is a lot of material to cover in this class, but the prepared class materials makes it really easy to keep up.
There was a lot to cover in a short amount of time. The pace is fast, but I felt that she explained the topics well. Curriculum is very close to high school chemistry. I did the moodle homework but none of the book work and passed easily with an A.
Super helpful & clear!
Murphy likes to go very fast and doesn't take the time to explain many things. She teaches way above a 100 level course. This class will become your life so be prepared to make a lot of time just for this class.
Murphy has long boring lectures where she reads right out of our lecture acticity book.... she assigns problems that she hasn't even taught yet. And when you ask her questions she makes you feel bad for even asking them. Not a very easy prof to talk to when you have questions. Test are extremly hard and they don't give enough time to take them.
This is a very fast-paced course and I think Dr. Murphy does what she can with the time allotted. Her lecture activity book is helpful and she gives a lot of extra credit! I think she's also very nice and passionate about chemistry education.
Dr. Murphy has a lot of material she needs to get through for this course, but the way it is currently being taught, it makes the material more confusing. I go in with a small understanding of the chapter and I leave more confused. There is so much homework, I could not study harder/longer if I wanted too for lack of time. Too many books also (4).
Dr. Murphy is very passionate about what she teaches, which seems to cause her to teach at levels above those of a 100-level course. She moves very quick in lecture which can be very confusing. She is very approachable and I would strongly recommend scheduling time to see her during her office hours. She does give lots of extra credit!
She tries her best with the time she has. Concepts may be confusing. Too much information to fit into a semester class so you're expected to go to tutoring or CSI for help. Do the readings before lecture. That being said, I hardly studied and I didn't read the book; do the homework. Two years of High School Chemistry before taking this course.
Murphy is a very intelligent person who knows a lot about chemistry. It may seem like a strange concept, but she actually expects you to put the work in if you want to get a good grade. Don't expect to sit back and do nothing. If you put in the time and use the resources available to you, you will do fine.
Does not answer students questions during class. Writes on the board and is already talking about the next thing while you're struggling to keep up with her. She flies through material and is impatient with student questions. I know there is a lot to cover, but other professors are much more competent at actually teaching.
Knows what she's talking about but can't teach other people. Makes simple concepts very confusing. I gave up half way through, retook it with Blecking and got an A- so I know it wasn't just me. Lots of homework that you have no idea how to do without spending hours with a tutor. Not worth it, take this class with a different prof!
Terrible. Second semester of gen chem 2 was with her. A good portion of her students failed which put her on watch with the higher ups. Hands out extra credit... I received an A in gen chem 1, and I am a 4.0 student tried to get a C to move on the org chem. She has ruined chem for me. At one point I was thinking to minor in chem. Not anymore!
Goes to fast and doesnt explain anything. There is no notes just answers questions in discussion book
We as students pay for D2L (an online grading site to help keep track of our progress throughout the semester), it is 1 week before my finals as I write this and I have YET to know my grade for this class. She gives over 1,000 homework problems (literally). You are expected to put in an extra 5 hr a day outside of class. She ruined chem for me.
Dr. Murphy went way too fast during class. She presented material in a very complicated way, and she was very hard to follow. Her exams were beyond difficult! Most of the problems on the exams were way to hard to solve! She was nice and somewhat helpful during office hours. She made Chem 104 way harder than is should've been!!!
Plenty of people do fine and pass, but you really need to work at it if Chemistry doesn't come easy to you. She does go through material really quickly. I got behind and when to her office hours to get help and she said to me that "there are such things as stupid questions, and you just asked one". Kind of lost respect for her after that.
I find it hilarious that the "extra credit" for this class ( which you will need since you are doomed to not do well ) is to participate in her own research. There is an extremely heavy workload expected by Murphy (which she does not even update grades on). The most demanding class I have taken at UWM. (and I am a first semester Senior)
Very bad at teaching and explains. Goes way to fast for understanding
for those looking into taking chem 104 wit murphy, good luck to you. I found that during lecture what was the most difficult for me about her teaching style was how she made the most easiest concepts very difficult to understand. She goes into too much detail, especially when working out problems. A problem that should take 5 min took 20 with her!
Overall one of the worst professors I've taken as a senior student at any school, and this class is definitely the result of a broken system. Kristin made simple concepts confusing and "monologues" the entire way through, seemingly interested in her own work instead of educating undergrads. Choppy, confused lecturing: professor to avoid.
Murphy gets negative reviews because she expects you to read the material BEFORE lecture. If you're unwilling to, then you're not gonna do well. Everyone says she goes fast during her lecture, but thats b/c its suppose to be a review of what you read. Also go to the exam reviews and her office hrs. Too few people did and these same ppl complain.
Avoid her at all costs!
WAY too preoccupied with her own projects. It doesnt feel like she really wants to be teaching. And its kinda hard to do well when your professor doesnt want to teach.
The top three students in the class don't attend lecture. She makes everything seem so much harder than it is. Good luck following her. She blocks what she writes while talking at 100 mph. If you are able to take this class with a different professor do so. She is hands down the worst teacher I hav ever had.
People don't like her because they expect to pass without reading the textbook. If you read the textbook before class, pay attention in lecture, and study, you will do fine. Going to her office hours is really helpful if you have questions. She is very knowledgeable about chemistry and knows how to teach.
She is really good professor and deserves to be respected. I encourage you to take her course.
Class was really difficult. I went into her office hours once and she just made me feel really dumb. Very nice lady but is a horrible teacher. She goes over info really quickly, no room for questions, and expects you to know everything right away. I went to CSI, read the book, did practice problems and still barely passed. Good luck if you have her
lectures aren't very interactive so make sure you pay attention. she goes quick and is hard to follow, but offers many resources to ask for help outside class, has a lot of office hours, and responds to all emails promply. i did well because i naturally understand chem but beware if science/math doesnt come easy.
She expects you to know the content before being taught it, but otherwise will help you outside of class if needed.
I ended up withdrawing from this class and changing my major - class averages on exams were generally around the 50% mark. Could be due to the pandemic and teaching online, but the class goes so fast and is not taught in a helpful way. She does give occasional extra credit. I was getting D's on the exams and I am a 4.0 student.
The worst prof I've ever had. I'm a 4.0 student and I was worried about not passing with a C the entire semester. The class average on exams and quizzes sat at 48%. When you ask her for help she just tells you to read the book. Half of the 200 person class dropped. Dr. Murphy has been suspended before for failing too many students. Avoid her!!!
Dr. Murphy knows a lot about chemistry but not on how to teach the course online. There was a lack of communication & compromise for students success, grading was confusing, and you need to use other resources in order to learn the information for her very difficult exams. She was not willing to work with the students, especially during COVID.
If you have to take chemistry 104 with Murphy, don't even bother, just wait for the spring semester with Carlson. Professor Murphy is very intelligent don't get me wrong, but she can't make the material understandable enough to learn. I spent hours watching her videos outside of class and still did horrible on exams.
She does not care if you pass or not. I went to weekly study sessions with the TA and reached out to her for help and still didn't understand a single thing taught. Not helpful outside of class. Doesn't take COVID seriously. Horrible teacher. Horrible class. Makes me hate a subject I used to enjoy. I don't know a single student who got a good grade
Probably the worst class I have ever taken, only because of the professor.
If you have to take Muprhy for chem, you might as well change your major. She is by far the worst professor i've ever had in my life. I am typically a straight A student and loves chemistry but she failed majority of the class and ruined my future for me. Exams were on things she never taught and also got in trouble with the chemistry department.
I took this class in the fall and it was the hardest class I've ever taken. Out of my 18 credits I took, it was the class I spent the most time studying for. The exams are much harder than what her practice and homework entails, and the book can be very misleading. The only reason I pass this class was because of the little extra credit at the end.
She is obviously extremely knowledgeable about chemistry but is not good at relaying that information to students in a way they can understand it. CSI is the only reason I did well in this course and she offers extra credit if you attend. Do as many practice problems as you have time for and spend time understanding the material weekly for quizzes.
I am otherwise a straight-A student but my ending grade for the course was a C- despite my hours of studying, attending CSI, and rewatching her lectures. I reached out for help many times and Dr. Murphy didn't seem to care that the majority of her class was failing. Currently retaking 104 with Carlson, learn from my mistake! Avoid Murphy if you can
If you care about your grade, I would avoid Murphy at all costs. She teaches at a level that is very hard to understand. This class is definitely a weed-out course and will require TONS of studying. Make sure to attend CSI and practice all moodle problems. To get an idea of the difficulty, only 8 people earned an A out of the 200 students.
Avoid Murphy if you can. Exams are extremely difficult & scores average 50%. Lectures go overtime and information is crammed at the last minute. Best grades were earned by those who didn't attend lecture. Goes on long, confusing monologues, only ever takes a breather when she's erasing the board. Covers what she writes. Do Moodle. Attend CSI.
This class is tough. There's a lot to get through and it's not the prof Murphy is a bad teacher, the course is just too hard and there's too much content for one semester. To get an A, this class will consume a ton of time. There's plenty of extra credit to keep you afloat thought.
Avoid if you can. Goes over the lecture time and towards the end of the semester gives up on responding to students. It is clear that she is passionate about the material, but she teaches as if we are her colleagues. The exam average is around 50-60%. She goes over examples in great detail, then says we will not be tested on those.
Definitely one of the hardest classes I've ever taken in my whole school career. The subject itself is already hard and Professor Murphy doesn't make it any better. Lectures are confusing. Pay attention in class!!! CSI is great help.
worst prof I have ever had. Makes chem much harder than it is. Average of exams was failing and acted like it was our fault. Didn't learn anything from lecture. Doesn't put any grades into canvas and at the end of the semester, she miss graded a lot of people. Lab practical was a lab that we never did, many kids failed it. TAKE CARLSON!
Long lectures but fully explained concepts. I skimmed by with an A but could have comfortably done it if she was more accommodating to military students. When asking to take a quiz at a different time than scheduled due to being at a military obligation the answer from her was simply no. However this is a pattern across the whole department :(
Her class made me consider changing my major. The first red flag was when we had to purchase 4 different books for her class. Her lectures are all based on the lecture activity book and she provides very few resources. Regarding lab, the instructors she chose are terrible. She doesn't use Canvas and makes you track your final grades yourself.
Lectures are essentially listening to non-stop talking while trying to write everything down in the tiny margins of the 30$ additional course manual that she helped write.
Lectures in this class are essentially trying to listen to non-stop talking for the entire class, which more times than not goes over the end time, while trying to write everything down in the tiny margins of the additional required 30$ course manual she helped to write.
Made me cry multiple times. Lab is ahead of lecture and there's no help. Be ready to spend all of free time on this class. Some things on tests we never learned. No curve on anything and minimal extra credit.
Stuck closely to lecture activity book but didn't thoroughly explain a lot of problems, would often go over while still leaving a lot unexplained, had a lot of quizzes but felt hard to relate some of them to what was learned in class
Hi friends, please do me a favor and take this class at MATC instead. You'll thank me for it. The instructors there actually care and are great at their job. Or take with Arsenio.
Her teaching makes it way harder than the subject really is. If you have to take her you must be extremely locked in. I dropped the class and took it with Pacheco instead. Night and day difference. It was pretty easy then. Coming back to write this after taking Ochem, I think Murphy is still the worst prof I've had in Chem. Womp womp
Professor Murphy's lectures can be overwhelming, but using unstuck study and the free textbook helped me stay on track. Attend class, work with peers, and you'll manage.
She rushes through material and talks super-fast without even explaining what she is writing or talking about. She gets sassy when you ask her question when asking for clarification. I would 100% recommend having a different professor to help get you through chem 100.
Talks very fast and goes over the problems quickly. Co-teaches Chem 100 with another instructor and they are never on the same page. Teaches as if all students already know chemistry / topic even though course descriptions states it's an introductory course. 0/10 recommended taking chem 100 with them
