we miss you dr st john from ASU
Dr. St.John is the best professor ever. very clear about what she expects and is sooo helpful and nice- she really cares about what she's teaching and how much you learn...tests aren't too bad, little homework, no reading..fun field trip! she has the cutest daughter too! Loved this class!!!
Dr. St. John is a great teacher. I was not interested in geology at all before I took this class. She made it really interesting and fun. She is also very helpful and wants everyone to do well in the class. If you need a science class, take this one!
The class was a little harder than I expected, but is not impossible by any stretch and St. John is more than willing to help. Our class also took a field trip to the VA Eastern Shore one weekend.
This class was a little tougher than I thought it would be. The assignments were terribly easy, but the tests came out of no where. Luckily you could work in groups on questions you didn't know. Definitely hard to pay attention to at 8am, but a really nice teacher.
She just was great at creating a warm and fun atmosphere for everyone involved and the trip to the eastern shore was one of the highlights of my stay at JMU
This class is not what I thought it would be. It is very difficult to pay attention, and the tests are ridicuously hard. The slides that she goes over in class has barely anything to do with the material on the tests. Nice teacher, but hard to get a good grade.
She's definitely not easy, but she makes things so interesting and fun that it's impossible to not get a good grade. Take her! She's amazing!
She's an awesome professor, but the material can get kind of hard. She always does activities to keep you interests. You just need to study for the tests, there's only 3, but there's a lot of opportunity to bring your grade up through a big project and extra credit. I would recommend.
sweet lady, but has a contradicting teaching style. will teach in very simple terms so you think you understand it, but then her tests ask complicated&minute questions that seem to appear out of nowhere. good teacher though, learned a lot. lab is one of the better labs to take as well. attendence isn't mandatory but you'll do much better if you do.
She's an awesome teacher, I'd definitely recommend. She knows a lot and makes class fun and interesting, and makes you laugh a lot. But be aware, tests are kind of tricky, but so is geology in general. She doesn't curve, but there's an extra credit project and a class project to help boost your grade, it's just a pain doing them. I managed a B
Class isn't extremely easy for a Gened, but Dr. St. John is a great professor! She definitely loves the subject and makes you excited about it even if you have no interest at all. Tests can be tricky though, but she gives thorough study guides. If you know everything on those and study ahead of time, it's not so bad.
SWEETEST PROFESSOR ON EARTH! I'm a SMAD major and hate science. She promised me she'd get me through the class if I was willing to put in the time. Go to office hours, DO EXTRA CREDIT, go to class. Tests are tricky, I straight up FAILED the first test and pulled off a B for the semester. She'll help you! Do the study guides! Made me sorta like rock
Do not take her... classes are soooo boring, all she does is stand in the front of the room and talk to herself so it seems. You will not learn anything from her lectures, and there is so much busy work... Dont take her, you will regret it
really sweet lady but terrible teacher. its not that hard but classes are terrible cause theyre so boring and theres a ton of information on the tests so you have to study alot. i wouldnt recommend this to anyone
I LOOOVE DR ST JOHN. No interest in science before this class, but she made everything so clear that I couldn't help but be interested. Her test format is great, but study for the tests. Do the extra credit, too. Sweetest teacher ever, class was never boring. Take this class for an easy A & interesting science gen ed!
She is a great teacher, so nice and so helpful. Class is not mandatory but recommended because she does not teach from a book- which is great for me because I don't read. I got an A and never bought the book. It's a lot about global warming if you are interested. Three test, one easy editorial and extra credit.
She's a very sweet lady. Though class isn't mandatory, it helps if you go. Plenty of office hours so there's no excuse not to find a time to see her if you have questions... do the study guides for her tests and you'll be fine! Do the homework too! She really likes what she teaches, so some of it may sound boring, but not bad for a Gen ED.
This GenEd is not a bad one... she teaches it well (though the ending of the course is a real bummer), but she gives little assignments that are real grade boosters, and her tests are almost group-like! Definitely worth taking if you need the GenEd!
Geology was a very informative GenEd that met the requirements for a cluster 3. Dr. St. John is so nice and tries her best to make her students successful. You'll honestly have to try hard to do badly. Sure the lectures are boring sometimes but attendance isnt mandaory....
She isnt very hard and is really nice. kinda rambles about stuff so class can get a little boring. You need to study for most of the test.
nice lady, clearly loves the subject. classes got boring and halfway through the semester she would randomly give credit for being in class so you had to go. doesn't use the textbook AT ALL so don't buy it. tests were sort of hard but cooperative portion brings your grade up. homework packets graded on accuracy. fair college course overall
St. John is a great teacher! She really wants you to believe in and use what she teaches you. Everything builds throughout the semester, so don't get behind. Not a hard class. Tests are partially cooperative (30% of your grade on the test is open notes/open friend). You learn a lot about the truth of global warming. Take this :)
The class seems easy at first, but her powerpoints are useless and even if you pay attention in class she never explains anything, just rereads the questions and graphs that are clearly visible on the powerpoints. Tests are based on random questions through text (which she says we dont need to read) But shes really nice and flexible with late work!
Super easy GenEd. Gives group tests. All homework and powerpoints she lectures on are put on blackboard, so you don't need to go to class. I only showed up for the tests and ended up with a B+.
Honestly, I don't know how any one can pay attention in this class. She just reads off the graphs in her powerpoints as if we can't read. It is so painful and I dread going to this class, however, it is an easy B. I do not listen at all and I have a B+, so I'm sure if you put in the work an A is extremely attainable.
This isn't an easy gen-ed. You're going to have to work. Your grade depends on the amount of time and work you put in. Can't BS anything. The tests absolutely suck and I never got above a B, but hw, projects, & extra credit pulled me up. I ended up with a B+. It's a nerve-wracking class, but it's not that bad.
She was a great professor. I thought class was very interesting. Her PowerPoints are great because they are pictures and graphs so they are very easy to understand. I took a lot out of this class. Got a 100 overall as my grade
She is a really great professor. She tries so hard to make the class interesting, alternating between ppts, group activities, and little field trips. She is so understanding, and goes over the material several times to make sure you get it. I would recommend her!
She's a good professor, passionate about her subject. Really nice and willing to help. With a decent amount of studying, you can get at least a B. I'd take her again.
Textbook is optional you don't need to buy it. I never read it and still got an A. Good professor really enjoys what she teaches. Listen in class and study power points before test and its an easy B. Part of the test is group which everyone aces and there is extra credit on every test. A lot of easy points if you go to class
She is always willing to help and the best geology teacher ever
Her class is extremely boring, she just rambles on and makes you do worksheet after worksheet. She makes everything seem so easy in class, but then you get to her tests and they are very hard. The answers for every question have 3 answer choices and then all of the above.
This class seems like it will be an easy gened based on these previous ratings, however her tests are actually very hard, even if you do the study guides! There are many in class activities and worksheets, so you have to go to class! Her class is so boring and her lectures make sense, but then when you get to the test it's impossible.
This lady is great! He passion for science is motivating. If you write a one page paper you get 3% added to your grade. tests are taken independently and then in a group. This class is easy, the test questions can be challenging.
She's really nice but tests are not easy. You can prepare by doing the Review Guides for each chapter but they will not guarantee you a good grade. There is a lot of small assignments and sticky sciences so if you miss class, you will miss points. She cares about everyone but the class is just so boring.
good professor. tests are relatively hard. but you can earn extra points by completing team tests and short answer questions. You'll have another chance to boost your grade by completing a one page assignment .
Dr. Kristen St. John is an extremely good professor. She really cares about her students and is really helpful (extra credit). Her lectures are really clear, but you have to study for the exams (very hard and specific questions). The book is really helpful.
Dr. St. John is a great professor. If you're looking for an easy class to take to fill a GenEd requirement, take hers. Not only will you get the credits, you'll most likely get a good grade, all while learning a ton of interesting stuff about the environment and world.
Dr. St. John is very passionate about her teaching. Three tests, taken individually and as a group that are easy to get an A on as long as you go to class and take notes. Has a 1 page extra credit assignment worth 3 points on your total grade. Many little 4 point homework assignments but won't affect grade much if you miss a few.
Dr. St. John truly cares about helping students learn the material in lab. The prelab videos can be extremely long and boring, but the prelab quizzes are exactly whats in the videos, so be sure to watch them closely. the first 4-5 wks have in class quizzes, and the last half are hw's. Everything is easy as long you do your work.
Truly the kindest professor I've ever had. Probably the most useful gened you will take. Class is very interesting. I HIGHLY recommend everyone to take her class. Her passion is contagious.
GEOL115 with St. John is one of the easiest classes I've taken at JMU. She's a great professor and understands that this is a gen ed course. The class itself is extremely interesting and really provides a better understanding of the Earth and climate. She also gives a lot of extra credit opportunities (1-page paper brought me from a 88% to a 91%)
As a person she is very nice and passionate. Unfortunately I found the class really boring. It's hard to take notes during class because her lectures are just looking at graphs. 3% easy extra credit. Study for the tests thoroughly and you'll be fine. Doesn't cancel class very often. I took this at 9am in memorial and was always bored aka tired.
Dr. St. John is a sweet lady and cares for her students' success. However, if you are not passionate about the topics discussed in class, this class will be painfully boring and a struggle for you. Lecture slides are posted online, but make no sense online or even in class. I suggest taking a different gen ed; this one is not an easy A.
St. John is a very nice lady who clearly knows her subject and is passionate about teaching it. Lectures and slideshows aren't too bad, and there are often group activities to keep students interested. Tests are HARD and require lots and lots of studying. Homework is moderate and there are multiple opportunities for extra credit to help your grade.
She is amazing. This class is pretty hard, I had to take it for a gen ed. I passed with a 85 literally doing the bare minimum. Just go to her office hours and make sure you have all of the right answers to her review guides. First test is hard, second is easy, third is hard. Always go to class for in class assignments. She really cares about you
One of the top three professors in JMU geology. She will go out of her way to help you. Shes smart, shes organized, and all around a wonderful professor and person.
I've never had so much homework in my three years at JMU until I took this class. It's a GenEd but she treats it as if we're majors with the course load. Don't take if you hate lectures bc she's long-winded. Exams are partly a group effort. If class is cancelled, expect her to post a video lecture and a mini quiz on it. Notes are mainly graphs.
Tests are hard and weirdly written. You complete the tests twice; individually and then in a group (your choice). Attendance is only sometimes counted. If you miss class, that doesn't mean you really miss class because she will post a video online and make you answer questions. She is a super sweet person, though and very dedicated to teaching.
If you aren't good at science, I wouldn't take this class. I am not great at it and struggled throughout the whole semester. She's a harsh grader for homework which really bumps down your grade and attendance is mandatory because you get graded almost every time just for coming. For me, material was very complicated. Tests aren't terribly hard.
The lectures are sometimes boring and difficult to follow. Pretty hard class, but Dr. St. John is very passionate about the subject and will help you in any way she can. Three tests: you take each twice, one time individually and one time with a group.
St. John is a solid professor, lectures are pretty boring but you can tell that she cares about this subject. It's a gen ed so everyone there isn't really interested in the class. She does an extra credit project that's super easy and you have a ton of time to do it. Overall, she's a solid choice, can't go wrong with having her as your professor.
most people take this class for to qualify for the gen ed requirement. some lectures are more interesting than others but she cares a lot about what she is talking about. DO the extra credit assignment, it isnt hard at all and you have a ton of time to do it, overall it was a good course and she is a good professor
St. John loves geology. Lectures can be boring. I never paid attention, just do the study guides before each test and you will do good. Each tests is 75 solo, 25 group. Do extra credit, adds 3pts to your final grade and took 1 hour. HW almost every class, but very easy and take less than 15 minutes. Highly recommend her
St. John knows her stuff. The class is mostly about climate change, and she explains it well. The first test is hard, the second is easy, and the third it hard. However, she gives a three percent grade boost at the end of the semester for doing an extra credit that takes an hour. The final paper was a pretty easy A.
This class was pretty difficult for being a gen ed. She expected us to already know a lot of information coming into the course. Tests were pretty hard but there are a lot of in class assignments and extra credit to make up for it.
This class is difficult for a gen ed. The entirety of her power points/lectures are graphs so it's not really possible to take good notes. There are 3 tests, the only easy one is the second test. Also make sure to do the extra credit assignment. Stay away from this teacher if you can because she expects too much from students in her gen ed course.
Stay away from this class. No actual notes, just charts. Shes very rude, and gives out way too many papers as if it were a high school class, then grades them very hard. Avoid! Super boring class too!
Her lectures never really get to the point. She has a lot of review guides for each test but the answers you have to look up on your own because she never actually tells you half the answers. Nice teacher who cares though.
Lots of easy homework assignments but she always finds a way to take off points. Lectures are VERY HARD to follow. There are no terms just graphs and she just circles them. There are only 3 tests and you do one individually and then take it gain with a group and she grades both, but tests are hard. She is so rude and she acts like you are dumb
Dr. St John was a great professor. She spent years researching the material taught out in the field, and she'll bring that experience and knowledge to the classroom. If you think you understand climate change then you're mistaken because she will open your eyes to the severity of the issue. Tests are noncumulative and easy if you look at the notes.
All her tests also have a group component with them where you take the test with others in your class too, assigns a lot of homework but it's easy, really should attend class to understand the material bc uploaded lectures are vague, uploads test reviews too that really help, overall easy class if you just try
She offers extra credit that will raise your grade 3 percentage points at the end of the semester. Attendance is not mandatory but if you don't go to class you won't understand as much. Textbook not needed. Lets you take an individual test and then a group test with partners and notes. Lots of small assignments to boost grade. Super nice professor!
The best gen ed you could ever take
the lab part for this class was super easy, some labs can be difficult but she can help on zoom, barely went to the zoom classes and did the labs on my own once a week, pre labs are super easy, would put us in breakout rooms but you can leave the call after she explains the lab and just do it by yourself if you want
St. John is definitely the best choice for geol 115. She cares a lot and handled online class very well. The homework isn't challenging and helps you understand the material better.
Dr. St. John is so sweet and extremely knowledgeable on geology. I loved her class and lab. TAKE HER !
Dr St. John is a great professor who will do anything to help her students. The class wasn't super interesting but I learned a lot. there is barely any homework, just take notes and you will do fine on the tests. I definitely suggest taking her.
She was super sweet and clear in her lectures. She was always more than happy to help if you needed it and was always pretty excited about the subject she taught. Definitely take her if you can.
Dr. St-John was very knowledgeable in her field and it showed in her lectures. There was no room for discussion, but the course was filled with information and I learned a lot! I took this class as a GenEd and as long as you pay attention and work hard, you can get an A. She is super sweet and passionate and also invites questions and feedback.
Dr. St. John is one of the sweetest professors I've ever had. She's insanely qualified in this field with plenty of amazing stories to tell of her renowned work, yet remains very humble. The only difficult part of this course were the tests. Use her review guides and actually study and you'll be fine, every other assignment is essentially a gimme.
Dr. St. John is a great choice for Geology 115. She is so sweet and really cares about her students. She also knows so much about her field of study. My best advice for this class would be to DO THE REVIEW GUIDES! They make tests a breeze!
She is a really nice person, but she expects way too much out of a gen ed. She gives way too many assignments each week. Some of them are extremely hard to understand if you're already having a hard time in class. Her power points are useless if you don't go to class. Tests are extremely specific, so memorize the study guides if you want to pass
Whatever you do NOT take this class. The tests were impressions no matter how hard I studied. Every week she assigns homework every day.
Not a terrible teacher, but expects way too much out of a gen ed. I would recommend taking a different teacher if possible.
Despite other reviews, I found the class to be very doable while taking other major senior classes. Tests were pretty exact to the study guides she gives you. Lots of homework, however, shouldn't take you more than 10 minutes to do it. She's very nice, knowledgable, and wants you to learn!
She's nice and work is not particularly hard, but there is way too much of it for a gen ed. group tests tho slay.
She's a good person and very passionate about climate change but sometimes the work doesn't really match the lecture which can get confusing but if you ask for help shell definitely help. You will have to work in a group the whole course which is helpful also theres a lot of work in class and at home which can help your grade
Very nice teacher but she makes the class way harder than it should be. Three tests with homework and extra credit. Attendance isn't mandatory but missing class will cut out big portion of grade. The tests are in groups but still very hard, the material in her study guide barely helps out. Most of the info is super specific stuff she mentioned once
Loved Dr. St John and GEOL 115! Easily my favorite class in my first semester here. Doing the review guides made exams SO much easier. Although attendance isn't mandatory, it's necessary to do well in the class. Sometimes classwork was graded pretty harshly, but there were clear guidelines and it's a great gen ed class!
I'll get straight to the point don't take this for an easy A for a gen ed. Main difficulties of this class include tests not being like the study guides or lectures. Lectures consist of her just explaining graphs, barely any definitions or conceptual learning. Other difficulties include a complete lack of personality from her and HW due each class
Awesome gen ed, very respectable professor with an easy-to-follow course. Exams were a little hard, but she does allow a cheat sheet. I put very little effort into the course, and when it was catching up to me, Dr. St John was happy to provide me with the resources to catch myself up. Attendance checked with Poll Everywhere. Take notes and show up.
For a gened, this class is so hard. So much busy work. Lowest grade I have. It's not terribly hard but too specific for a gened. You can get by but studying hard.
Dr. St John is a very sweet lady who is passionate about the subject. Attendance is tracked via poll everywhere and there are many in-class group assignments, so show up. There are usually easy small (~15 mins) hw assignments after most classes (usually lectures). I would study for the tests, as the 3 tests make up a large portion of your grade.
Dr. St John is insanely qualified and a gem to learn from. I would 100% take her again. She provides so much structure and organizes the course so well. Her lectures keep you interested the whole time, and if you just show up to class you can get extra credit. TAKE HER!!
overall she wasn't bad. if i was forced to take this class again i would. her grading on classwork was always a tad confusing and the topics were confusing sometimes too. tests weren't too hard but definitely weren't easy. you had to know the topic. my suggestions are study, participate, and take good notes and you'll be fine.
I don't have a science brain but I love this class! Lectures are mostly graphs so it's important to pay attention to what she says. Exams have two parts, individual and group. I'm not a good test taker but as long as you understand the material, you will get a good grade. She posts review guides after each unit which helped me study. Very kind too
Her GEOL 110 course might be the most unnecessarily hard class in the school. Daily attendance assignments are graded based on perfect accuracy. If one thing is missing, then she will give you a 6/10. Her exam 1 was extremely difficult it made 0 sense. This is a gen ed that she teaches like it is a major course.
She took over for my other oceanography professor about mid year. She does recitations on wednesdays for the class and async for mondays. She is really sweet and helpful!! Her in class worksheets I actually find very helpful!! I hope she becomes more permanent for this spot.
I took the lab for the class with her and she is so so nice. She really cares for her students and answers questions clearly. If you're confused about something, she will help. There are review sessions once or twice a week and they are really helpful too. I loved taking this lab, and I would say it was definitely one of the easier ones at JMU.
