a very tough prof. she teaches a first year class like a fourth, gives no direction in class. she is not willing to help students,it is her way or no way. she really knows her stuff, but you have to be on her good side for her to help you.
The course is poorly organized, and she doesn't know the material. There is a negative atmosphere in the class room.
Worst professor i have ever had. Gives absolutly no direction, doesn't explain things well, and shows no concern for struggling students. She made the course harder than it needed to be!
It's getting better, but she needs to develop a rapport with her students rather than being combative and pretentious. She's definitely making material more difficult than it needs to be. I rarely stay in class and have learned far more from the stupid $75 photocopy book than from the lectures.
Run away... as fast as you possibly can. I wish I could to the same. WORST PROF EVER!!
got off on a really bad start with the class, but it got a thousand times better. material is a bit more difficult then it needs to be, tests are tough but marked well. she is difficult to approach, but once you do, she is more than willing to go out of her way to help you. she's tough but good.
Definitely the worst prof I've had in the 4 years I've been here. I would love to know what her credentials are. She knows absurdly little about the topic. If *anyone* teaches another secion, take it with him/her instead.
if you want help, ask her. she is more than willing to give it. brilliant when it comes to her subject,if you think that something is too hard or unfair, need help with it, ASK HER, do not whine, complain, and attack her as a class, she will accomodate you to come to a compromise. great prof.
I hated this class! She can't teach at all! The package was 75$ and I looked at it about 3 times. If you study for the mid-term and exam you will pass....
This is a hard class. She gives a lot of notes. She is always late for class and comes up with stupid excuses for why she was late. IE. I did not have my watch today. She is a hard marker. Do not take her class, she made us do 15 article summaries. She marks our research proposals super hard.
The amount of work this proff gave us for the course is way beyond the amount of work I've had for any of my third year classes. She gave us 15 article reviews to do. One 7 to ten page essay. And during class we have take down a whole bunch of notes. The proposal is reallylong and hard, and she's not apt to give high grades. Mostly B's and C's.
not an easy prof.........
Not an easy professor at all - avoid if you can. Gives a massive amount of readings per class (30-60 pages, and multiply by that by 2 since it's twice a week) Very moody and seems to take out her frustration on the class. Know everything for the midterm/exams...which includes articles, textbook and class notes. AVOID
Avoid this teacher, doesn't give you her slides and the reading amount is ridiculous. Very boring class and hard to pay attention
I found this prof to really appreciate those who attend her class and really want to try, which is good, because if you are that student she will really be there to help you succeed. i found her very helpful, but she really likes to see that you have done your research or your work before you present questions to her so make sure you do so.
Kristen is a great professor. All the negative comments made about her on here are FALSE! She is extremely helpful, and will respond to email questions within hours. She is a really reasonable person and if you get to know her abit shes REALLY NICE...great person to learn how to research from as well!
Kristen is awesome. So knowledgable about many different areas having to do with sociology and anthropology and always opens up class discussions to hear about students' personal experiences. Anyone who says she is a tough prof, is just not a good student. Her readings are reasonable about one chapter per week, and her tests and assignments are fai
Great prof. Must go to class in order to understand and get notes as she doesn't post them online. Extremely helpful outside of class as she will go around your schedule to meet with you if you need help.Seems intimidating due to the amount of notes one must take but in the end, it's really not that difficult. Just go and see her to deal with probs
Pros- interesting class, engaging prof in lectures, answers emails on time, midterm is fairly easy if you study well! Cons- NEVER on time!, not very specific with what she wants in her paper (see her about it a lot and ask many questions), a little narrow minded
She's a really great Prof! She seems very intimidating at first but you then realize her dry sense of humor and realize she's not really all that mean...she's actually pretty chill! There are many papers like 5 for this class! So you need to be on top of yyour game! Also finding the readings are very hard!
Had one day and left the class. The prof was openly rude, did not allow laptops or use Virtual Campus, and expected the class to use a single copy of several books from the library amongst ourselves. I'm a good student, I don't hand anything in late, ever. I was very intimidated.
I was excited to take this course, but the 3 classes I've had so far have been a let down. She goes from being merely judgemental to openly combative (telling a student who asked her to use a mic because she couldn't hear that she was "SOL" so move closer). She's 1 sided in her views, doesn't use virtual campus and gives no access to the notes.
Honestly worst prof I had in my university career, narrow minded, doesn't understand that she is suppose to help you learn not try and make it harder. starts class late everyday extremely disrespectful to the students and yells at students for texting because it is disrespectful. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
Although Professor Tole is has a wealth of knowledge on the subject matter, it is conveyed in a very one-sided way. Her condescending teaching style is inappropriate, and takes away from the course material. Some days were worse than others, but still I have never encountered a professor that takes such an aggressive approach to teaching.
This is my first time writting on "rate my prof", and I feel the need to because Professor Tole was by far the worst professor I have ever had. She always starts class late, has a rude, agressive, and sarcastic style of teaching, does not explain things well, and her teaching has no structure. I wish I avoided this class :(
HATED this class. Took this class to lighten my course load and I had more readings in this class than ALL my 4th year classes! 90$ for a useless photocopy course pack that i will not be able to sell. always late for class. rude condascending manner brings a negative atmosphere to the room. Makes a second year class way harder than it should be.
Could have been a very interesting course. Prof knows her subject matter well, but tries to make it as difficult as she can and is rude to the class. She is an outragously hard marker on papers and exams, and exams are too long for the amount of time alloted. The amount of reading required was also incredible! Wish I had not taken this course :(.
Unable to teach. Unpleasant. Frequently wrong and contrary to other comments here I found that she did NOT know her stuff.
I loved this prof. She made it very clear on the first day what was and was not acceptable in her classroom. The material was very interesting and she promoted lots of debates and really wanted the students to show that they were grasping the material. I personally really enjoyed her sense if humour and her class.
The most offensive Professor I have ever had. She had no interest in hearing her students thoughts, especially if they were contrary to hers. She created a very negative learning environment, and I would not recommend her class to anyone.
Kristen is the most useful teacher I have encountered during my time at uOttawa. Always available to meet outside class, readings are directly related to course material, very knowledgeable of subject matter. A bit strict in class & you need to actually put in work to get a good grade... her classes aren't bird courses but you'll learn a lot!
Readings and assignments are constant, but prof is VERY helpful and quick to answer emails to those who actually show up to class. Has a certain (sarcastic) teaching style and dry sense of humor, but I personally enjoyed it. Would be happy to have her as a prof again.
I really enjoyed this class. Prof. Tole is a good teacher. You have to go to class and actively listen and you'll do well. Her slides aren't posted online and are just "skeletons" of what is actually discussed in class so you really need to add notes to them to make use of them.
Avoid getting a headache and just don't take ANY of her classes. She is careless about the world. Her midterm/exams are WAY TOO LONG. She doesn't know how to explain anything. She wants you to participate in class but is very rude when you do if it's not something that she believes in. LOTS of readings!
A dedicated professor who expects students to be accountable for their own learning. Sets the bar high, but students who put in the effort will benefit over the academic career!
very negative and mean to students.
Terrible. She has way too high of expectations for a class that clearly doesn't want to be here. Ridiculous projects and demands. Insults students when they try to participate then wonders why people don't. Avoid at all costs.
Good professor who expects a normal level of decently and respect from students. Clearly presents course material and offers assisted when asked.
Even though attendance is not mandatory, it's better to attend because she elaborates very extensively on the slides she provides during the class. Her lectures are very interesting, filled with ongoing discussions, she really keeps the course material flowing- even at eight o'clock in the morning. :) Also, is VERY helpful and good at explaining.
She was a nice women who was genuinely interested in what she was teaching us however I found her very hard to follow. I hated attending her class. I studied so hard for the final and went into it very calm and left feeling as though I had been run over by a train. Do not take this course unless you are very serious about Sociology.
I'm currently in her class and am currently dying. She gives assignments almost every week and only gives instructions a week in advance; one of her assignments are due the same day as midterm. If you have a full workload, I do not recommend taking this class. Actually, I don't recommend this class/prof. Period.
Late for each class with no apology. Often loses train of thought. Vague explanations then is rude/condescending when asked to repeat/elaborate. Expects class as a whole to answer yes/no all together as though in 1st grade. Multiple assignments allow you to catch up if you don't do well on the first one.
Decent Prof. She does the best she can with the material.
Prof. Tole is an outstanding academic. She knows what she is teaching and you better don't bulls*t. She is one of those profs that has seen it all. If you want to lean what you are taught, then better take her classes. She is very helpful. She might be intimidating at first but in reallity she is very friendly and will give you tips on anything.
Avoid at all cost!
Unclear, rude, always late for class, only values her own opinion and is not open minded whatsoever. Does not post her slides, and the slides she does show in class have little to no information on them. Avoid if possible!!!!
I read all the comments about this professor and still decided to take the class. And loved it! The slides had barely any information on them because you tend to listen and take in more information when you're not relying on someone's notes to do. The context of the class was interesting in all of the classes I took with her! Biggest Help ever!
She is one of the best prof I have ever had. I took 3 of her classes and have received A's in all of them. There's a lot of work but you learn a lot. She might seem intimidating but she is actually is really friendly, quick at replying to emails, and really helps you out when you can't make deadlines or need general help.
THE BEST PROF AT OTTAWA U! She is always there for her students! Her midterms and exams reflects all her notes and slides . Se does not post her notes online so you to show up but literally if you study the notes and slides you'll ace the class. Also go to her office for help on papers and she'll make sure you get an A.
She's pretty good when it comes to the lectures. She uses slides but doesn't post them online but the lectures are heavily related to the text book - which i never used. We had an assignment pretty much every week or two; they were fairly simple but still a lot of work. She always came to class late with starbucks. it got kind of annoying.
Hi Everyone! I love this prof! She's really amazing! She does not post her slides on blackboard and they barely contain content but you learn how to become a great note taker and learn through listening. She's always there if you need extra help.. very down to earth!
I loved this professor, she does not post slides online to encourage you to show up to class. She does not post notes online as well so i cannot stress enough how important it is to show up to class. Her lectures have substance and she cares about what you, as a student think about the material. No MC questions, big on explaining your thinking.
Technology was not permitted in class (no phoneslaptops) and strictly hand written notes. She has slides but doesn't post them, but I honestly learned so much in this class! I was hesitant at first with the tech ban and the pricy textbook, but came to love the prof as well as her teaching. Plenty of class discussions and interesting content.
Very hypocritical and would not admit that she told me I could use first person narrative, even though I had the conversation in email. Offered no other feedback as to why she failed my paper. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
She was pretty rude in class. Marks very easy. Midterm and final are both LONG - get ready for hand cramps. Wish I didn't buy the textbook because it was not necessary. Two very long papers for this class too. Heavy course load but grades easy
She is just a nice human being. And beyond that she is always there for her students and she really seems to care about her students success. Grading criteria is not always clear but all in all I would recommend taking her class! I really enjoyed having her as a prof!
She is amazing, smart and very knowledgeable. She wants you to really think and do your own research. She just won't try to give you an answer but to come with it yourself and she will give you great feedback. If you go to every class ask many questions and always intervene, she notices these things and they will impact your grade on tests.
BEST PROF AT OTTAWA U. Anyone who said to avoid her classes never attended her office hours. If you are unsure of an assignment or struggling in any aspect of the course she is there to help. She really cares about her students and wants them to do well. There were many assignments but her exams relate directly to the papers. Highly recommended.
Although she is a tough grader, she genuinely cares about her students comprehending the information she is teaching. She is willing to work with you and slow down the lecture pace if the class isn't grasping the concepts. Great prof overall.
too many readings for a summer course (at least 100 pgs every lecture) and it is not relevant to course material. no access to slides and we're not allowed to use computers so we have to write it down as she's lecturing. unclear about assessments
Not aloud laptops and doesn't post slides online which makes it difficult if you miss a class, this being said her slides aren't the best as they're very vague. You can easily just read the book and have the same info.
The lectures are very vague but there is very specific info required for assessments. No laptops makes it difficult to get all the information down
Lectures in this class are basically meaningless. Little to no help on the group project, so you're on your own. Very little communication between her and the TA means that they don't mark on the same rubric. Very confusing and frustrating course, overall.
Gets satisfaction by asking the class a question every two seconds and making every single person respond. "How is everyone today?" *silence* " I said how is everyone today?". Loves the power. "No laptops allowed" is a backwards progression in schools, she says its so people dont get distracted? Im looking out the window anyways
SOC3117 was a mandatory class for my sociology major, and it was a terrible experience. She gave us plenty of time to work in our groups during class, but was not clear at all when it came to the guidelines. Very intimidating and rude. Ended up getting an okay mark in the class, but the entire semester was very stressful.
I recommend you to not take a class with this professor. 10 page assignment due less than a month in (Not complaining about the work)however, no rubric, no outline, no clear and precise information about what she was asking for at all. Very condescending when you do ask questions.
Professor Tole has been one of my favourite profs throughout my academic career. She is quick to respond via email, went out of her way to help me and give me feedback on an assignment. Her lectures are captivating and very discussion based. You go to her class and you learn, she makes that easy.
Honestly one of the best professors I have had at Uottawa. She is very accessible if you have any questions and always there to help with any difficulty with the class notes. You have to attend all her classes cause she does not post the slides on brightspace. Would definitely recommend!
This class is a lab based class so there is definitely a lot of work you have to do. She is really good at giving feedback. I love that she is very honest cause I pay a lot of money for this class and I would hope that I am able to learn something from it. If you have any problems with course project, talk to her! She there to help always.
Prof. Tole is a great lecturer, she does a great job at creating discussions and debates in class and promoting participation. She has slides, doesn't post them, but they are so short form you'd need to come to class regardless to get the full content. Questions on her exams are usually 60% lecture content and 40% assigned readings
This prof is ok, but there is a lot of work in this class, as well it can be hard to talk to this prof.
You will learn a lot and the readings are interesting, but be careful asking for feedback. She snapped at me and said I did not do something I very clearly did and said I should have done a lot worse. I have no idea why I deserved that and I think she confused me with someone else but it made me never want to ask for feedback from a prof again.
Shows up to class 20 minutes late regularly. Rambles on and on and expects the whole class to answer questions while she's supposed to be teaching the material. Rambles on and on. No clear idea of what to study for midterms or what she wants for the essays. Way way too many readings for a second year course. Pretentious and condescending. AVOID!
This should have been a really interesting class and it ended up being nearly unbearable. Her slides are confusing and when she gives the slides context, it does not seem to relate fully to each other. if no one can give an example she will just move on instead of giving the class examples to help us contextualize. Often late for office hours
Doesn't allow laptops in class and is unwilling to post slides covered in class online so if you miss class and don't know anyone in the class, good luck. Asks alot of questions to the class and if no one answers, she skips over instead of providing examples. Can be intimidating and rude. For a second year course, is way more stressful than needed.
She doesn't put a lot of attention on the course. She's always late for class and office hours. No slides online, unable to use electronics for notes, unclear requirements for assignments and tests. Those slides she uses are not well organized (several different formats for one lecture...)I have so much more to complain, no more characters left...
Prof Tole is AMAZING. doesnt post slides and doesnt allow tech in class but is very responsive to emails (not on weekends tho). assignments and tests could be explained better but she answers questions at the start of every class. super understanding and cares a lot about her students. overall a gem of a prof.
Actually do your readings and you will do well on the midterm and final. my only complaint is that she is not clear when it comes to what she wants from the term paper even after asking her and the TA, he was so strict and nitpicky with marking the term papers which brought my grade down to a B.
The most amazing professor I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. I decided to retake this class after passing with a C the first time (same prof) in order to improve my GPA and I have taken about 5 of her classes overall. Kristen Tole is honest and very intelligent. Always ask for feedback, go to her office hours, LISTEN and ask questions.
Disclaimer: she adjusted her class for online learning - may change post-Covid Pros: - cool and caring professor - no midterms or finals (just 3 assignments with the last being the final) - classes tend to finish early Cons: - Details for assignments are very lacking - THE FINAL IS SO LONG HELP - In-class assessments 20% - Does not post slides
Professor Tole, although sometimes engaging in lectures and was commended with her in class participation over zoom was a very hard marker and gave little to no feedback on such marks. Was very hard to get ahold of and takes a long time to reply to emails. Hard and long assignments- would rather a midterm
She seems like a great researcher, but she is a confusing prof. When she explains it only gets more confusing. She grades insanely hard. 4 projects (can be with a partner), one midterm, one paper, final. Takes a long time to grade. Its weird because the content seems understandable but she makes it so hard. Makes me want to cry tbh
It was a hard course because Kristen was confusing, and things were made to seem more complicated or difficult. However, with questions and more clarification, it is understandable, and the material is very applicable to real life research. Have to attend class and ask questions! She is a nice person who will answer questions, wants to interact
Her assignments are all written. She provides no guidelines and leaves you guessing. The whole class will have to ask her about the assignments in order to understand anything, just for her to get frustrated that questions are being asked.
One of the worst profs at uottawa! Her assignment instructions are very vague and she provides little to no feedback on assignments. Very rude to students when they ask questions. Very slow at marking assignments. Not easily reachable outside of class. Ive taken a few classes with her and each time Ive regretted it.
Please avoid her. Tough grader. The midterm exam load is unbelievable.
She's very vague in her assignment instructions. She literally posts the assignments as discussion board posts and posts them 2 weeks before the assignments are due and not attend. I have other classes smh. Also, she doesn't record her lecture but you don't really need to go. She responds at an ok rate with her emails
Probably one of the worst profs I've ever had... the papers are terribly long. I can't stand her classes, they are very boring and you can easily pass your assignments without ever attending a single lecture. the exam load is egregious, a 15 - 20 page take home exam??? Insanity...
Gives extremely vague instructions for her assignments and expects far too much. Doesn't record her lectures, but ur not allowed to use any class lectures for ur assignments anyways. Gives such little feedback and is never clear on what she wants from us. Super boring lectures and not worth all the work that goes into the class. Wouldn't recommend.
One of the worst profs i've ever had. The assignments are unnecessarily long, the 12 page papers she assigns can easily be done in 6. The guidelines/criteria for these assignments are posted way too close to the due dates and the instructions are always unclear. If you want hair on your head by the end of the semester don't take this class.
horrible professor!!!!! she literally gives us our marks 3 days before our final project. Does not even give us the slides at all. Makes her assignment guidelines into discussion posts. 0/10 worst prof ever never take her class
Dr. Tole is an okay prof and I like the content of her class even though she makes it tough. The first day of in-person classes she couldnt make it without announcing it before so we showed up to class meanwhile shes on campus, just at a different building.
Our grades were changed multiple times with no explanation.
Avoid her at all costs, she will make you go crazy. Assignment instructions are NEVER clear. She gets defensive when you ask her any question over email as if you're wasting her time. Her grading makes no sense. Expect your grades on Brightspace to randomly change due to "technical errors" when it clearly is not an error. It's happened repeatedly.
If you want to rip your hair out due to frustration with this prof then take her, if you don't want to lose all your hair I would suggest not taking her.
Super unclear grading criteria. Horrible at answering the question you asked. You can ask it and she will answer it, but she will give you an answer that doesn't even apply to your question. I will try to avoid her in future years.
This course has a heavy workload and most of your learning will be done independently. I attended all lectures and can say the professor taught me very little. Her lectures are dry and she rarely is able to relate the information to any real world examples or her own experiences. She is also not receptive to student questions.
She doesn't post the lecture slides, you have to go to class to get the material but its useless, all her assignments/papers are heavily researched-based. She will deduct marks for using class material in papers/assignments - like???. Assignment instructions are super wordy and confusing. She never answers questions concisely, she responds vaguely
She posts the cloud recording of the class to BrightSpace - I will give her that. But then, she takes it down less than 48 hours later. What is the reason for this? I will never know. She does not answer emails. She does not let us use class notes for assignments. Very odd behaviour. I took this as an easy elective and I have so many regrets.
I had an overall very negative online experience with Professor Tole. She does not post notes to the course brightspace and deletes lectures after only 2 days. Additionally, her assignments are extremely long with the final exam for this semester being a 12-15 page take home. Would not recommend.
Avoid her at all cost..... easily the worst professor I've had at University of Ottawa.
Professor Tole has good intentions, but her teaching methods are monotonous and boring. I have taken two courses done by her, and I had good grades for both of them, but that is only because I have a to of interest in the topics she teaches. She forces participation, which can be discouraging, and her slides aren't engaging. She isn't bad
I think a lot of people do not give Professor Tole credit where credit is due. She is clearly highly intelligent and knows a great deal about her area of expertise. Her lectures are engaging, but they are long and sometimes difficult to understand due to the nature of the content. I feel like I would see this class in a graduate level program.
Makes it hard for students to enjoy the class. I was looking forward to this class, however each assignment is so 'extra and unneccesary 12+ peer reviewed articles for each paper, can't use other sources that are not approved by her or else we get marks off, deleting lectures after 2 days? + the final ''photovoice'' project was horrible and a waste
NO. NO. Cannot use class notes, stopped going to lectures because she is aggressive and impatient , an extremely annoying final that took me weeks to complete. This class was a mistake.
I genuinely would rather give up my whole degree than take another one of her classes. I learned nothing but patience being in her class.
She is very willing to help you get a better understanding on concepts, the possible issue is the course itself and how advanced it could be, but making personal research on YouTube, Google, and reading the textbook could help you understand concepts way better and efficiently.
I had professor tole for 2 classes this semester and I honestly loved her. She can definitely have a tough personality at some times but overall she delivers the information well. Make sure to go to class though because she does not post her slides. I would recommend her to students looking to learn more about methods and the research process.
Persoanlly, I really enjoyed her class and felt really engaged throughout lectures, was one of the only classes where I was genuinely able to participate and know my stuff. Despite this, she never posts lectures, her assignments are on pace with graduate level work, and she goes into a panic whenever she hears a sound ping from her own computer.
Doesn't post lectures online, doesn't let you have your phone out (even to take pictures of the slides), lectures are a little confusing. If you have special needs with learning, this Prof is going to be challenging to keep up with because attendance is absolutely mandatory and there is little material online.
Professor Tole was alright - does not post lecture slides - no exams - class is interactive and engaging - helpful after class for questions - guidelines unclear - tough marker & unhelpful feedback (got a B on a paper and said something like: "great writing, good job!") - says wrong things (there's blood inside cells, RPNs write prescriptions, ...)
How I got the grade I did I still do not know, because the grading criteria was incredibly unclear and I didn't know a single classmate who was not struggling
I had her for 2 classes and the workload was more than my 3 other classes combined. I had friends in my class and we were all confused by the assignment guidelines. She was condescending and rude. I have her again for another mandatory class and I am dreading it. If you're able to avoid her, you should. If you can't avoid her, good luck.
Syllabus would not mention any assignments in class. At the last week of the semester she still hasn't posted any grades. The lecture is shallow, full of sociological cliches. However, she will assign you a 12-page independent paper!!(20 pages for two at final) Don't come, or you'll be miserable in the last semester of your undergraduate career.
- Course content has the potential to be interesting if presented by a better professor. - Professor does not post slides, lectures, or readings on Brightspace and uses the excuse "it is a student's duty" to excuse their laziness. - I would rate this professor the lowest out of all the professors I have had so far.
SOC4315 - Tole consistently disrespects students in every interaction; shes demeaning, aggressive, & rude. Work load is the heaviest I have ever experienced (final paper was 50 pages of text alone). Group project the entire semester and she doesnt care if your group is not contributing to the insane workload. Miserable experience.
I'm not sure how to describe her. She's an amazing teacher; she definitely knows what she's talking about and makes it extremely easy to apply the knowledge you're learning in class. However, her assignments, grading, and the inability to access lecture notes if class has ended make it difficult to earn a decent grade in her class.
Failed me because my exam answers were too good she said they were 'AI generated' BS PROF!!!!!!
Truly the worst prof I have ever had. Tons of groups projects on short notice (24 hour turnaround), takes forever to post grades, no slides posted, no camera on during zoom, unclear assignments, rude to students when they ask questions. Lectures are just her stream of consciousness for three hours - no structure whatsoever. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!
150-200 pages base reading + more for weekly assignments and midterm/final. Midterm 15 pages, final 25 pages. Weekly masters-level research projects. She was 5-20 minutes late to EVERY class, and once ended class 2 hours early because she was in a bad mood. Rude, will snap and insult people if she disagrees with them but expects participation. RUN!
This prof was one of the worst i've ever had, she's mean and extremely rude to the students. Haven't met anyone who thought she was nice and a helpful prof that wants you to succeed. Provides very unclear outlines for all assignments, this elective caused me more stress than my required courses. I'm convinced all the good ratings are from herself.
Probably the worst prof I have ever had. Doesn't post lecture slides or notes, VERY against phones she has yelled at students across the lecture hall for using their phones (or a notification sound going off) or taking pictures of the lecture slides with their phones. She is also very rude to students and insults students when asking questions.
she doesnt seem like she wants to be teaching. her assignments are so insanely vague, so its important to go to her office hours to clarify what she wants. the papers are a little long, but she does require you to work with a partner. she seems rude when teaching and a little condescending at times
Try to avoid if you have SASS accommodations.
Rude to students, not respectful.
Be ready to work in pairs for the majority of your assignments if you take this class. She does not let you use the content from her slides (and does not post them) and is really strict about phones in class. She can come off as a little condescending sometimes, but overall she is a fairly good prof and the content of the class is interesting.
goes against uni regulations. accuses students of using AI by using AI detectors (which are discouraged by the uni due to how unreliable they are). if you want to keep yourself safe, don't take this prof. she will try to ruin your academic record
HOLY, this prof is the absolute rudest. She expects participation 24/7 but is rude when students do participate, this leads to her getting mad that no one is participating. 90% of my grade was group papers that were 10-25 pages long, I think it's diabolical that i'm actually paying someone to treat me with such disrespect. AVOID AVOID AVOID!!!
I cannot stress this enough PLEASE avoid if you care about your GPA. I took this class as an elective and it made me want to rip my hair out more than any of my required courses. Assignments are posted to a DISCUSSION BOARD? and are so vague. She does not go over the assignments in class. Good luck ever getting any grade back before a month or two.
Professor Tole's class was a mixed bag. While the content was engaging, she lacks organization and communication - not posting slides or recordings. However, the interactive lectures were valuable, and unstuckstudy proved to be a helpful study tool. Overall, a challenging course, but worth taking if you're willing to put in the work.
One word. Terrible
Professor Tole is rude and disrespectful, and her slides are ambiguous and hard to understand. She can be nice but her explanations are very difficult to understand. Her marking is difficult and comments are unhelpful.
She is a sad woman. Very condescending and you can feel that there is some anger inside her because the world does not revolve around her
Dismissive, rude, and disrespectful towards students.
I took three of Professor Tole's classes during one semester, and it was the worst experience I have had at this school. She is rude to students, always has a negative attitude, and is just a poor teacher overall. Her lectures are hard to sit through, and her assignments have very few guidelines.
Disappointed with teaching and evaluating methods. Nothing posted to brightspace, assignment guidelines posted as discussions?? Vague lectures, prof relied on students' input, nothing was ever clarified. 2/3 assignments (including final) were in groups. Not allowed to use class material on assignments, honestly kinda pointless. Also very snarky.
This is a warning to all students not to take her classes!!! I had her this semester for SOC3315, and although it wasn't lecture-heavy, she still managed to be rude and unhelpful. She posts the "guidelines" in the discussion boards, where it is all mixed with everything else. The assignments are unclear, and overall feedback is unhelpful.
You have to attend the lectures because she doesn't post the slides. She is a very heavy grader, and gives only two days and vague instructions for large assignments. I heard a lot of bad things about her before I started the class but I wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt and try to like her but she genuinely is a terrible professor.
the exam was 130 questions...
Lectures lack discussion on assigned content, with unsubstantiated sociological claims and minimal instructional value. Immediately disrespects tuition-paying adults with orders like "headphones out, phones away." The inconsistent policy of banning phones while allowing laptops lacks pedagogical justification. No need to attend lectures.
3315*. Prof Tole is very familiarized with the content taught in the course, however not a class goes by without her making an arrogant and/or condescending remark towards a students' question. This makes it extremely difficult to seek help/guidance in and outside of class.
This professor gives a lot of assignments with little to no guidelines, yet grades very harshly when things are not exactly as she expects. Will answer questions but is very cagey and disrespectful. Talks to students like toddlers or pets.
I took this course during the summer semester. Unless this course is required for your program, do not take it. The exams were big (the final exam was about 130 multiple-choice questions). She is also a very tough grader. Her teaching wasn't bad, but there are times when it is hard to understand. The prof was a bit strict with SASS accommodations.
If you're not religious, pick a religion and pray
It is truly inspirational to see that she is still employed by the University of Ottawa. She inspires me to underperform and be generally rude in my future workplace. Teaches so many undergrad sociology courses it is impossible to avoid her, I suggest changing your program.
Lectures are hard to follow and consist of disorganized, vague descriptions of concepts. Majority of class grade is a group project with no clear guidelines. Instructions are posted to discussion boards. Quite rude and discouraging to students.
I can't describe how disrespectful this prof is. Have a question? get ready for her to ask snarky and act as if you are 2yrs old. Will not post slides, so if you miss a class, pick a religion and pray. Thought I would give the benefit of the doubt, do not. I have never had this much difficulty with a class or prof ever.
All assignments were group projects with randomly assigned members. Unclear instructions in-class, and she never posted slides. Only posted class material on the discussion board. Snarky attitude to people who asked questions. This one class felt like the workload of three and has caused me the most stress out of any class I've ever taken. Avoid.
