I like her. She's pretty and helpful. But I just hope she would curve the midterm scores.
She's a nice person but terribly boring, She doesn't teach she just does problems and has you watch. If you have the patience, go to class and just write down what she writes down and the tests are exactly the same as the examples that she posts on blackboard. Again, terribly boring, don't expect your interest to be enhanced but an A is achievable.
Really nice. Go 2 her office hours/stay after class for 5 minutes, she'll clarify ne of your ?'s. DO NOT SIT TOWARDS THE BACK OF THE CLASSROOM! Not manditory 2 go 2 class but it's really helpful 4 quizzes, in-class assignments, project, homework & midterms/final. She curved the class. I'd recommend her.
First of all, do not buy the textbook. Never used it once. I agree with the other person, she is VERY boring, just does the practice problems and if you ask a question she answers it by doing another practice problem.
overall it was a hard class, but if you go to office hours and show her you care about your grade, you will be happy with your final grade. forget about buying the book, you don't need it.
She doesn't teach very well. Pretty much does a bunch of examples during class. DON'T buy the textbook! VERY BORING TEACHER. I'm pretty sure a student had to raise their hand and correct her at least once every class time.
This class is extremely boring, and I didn't learn anything from attending class. Attendance is mandatory though because she uses Poll Everywhere. Lots of time consuming hw, the sh hw was very unfair and confusing. I found the class in general to be extremely confusing most times. 1st half of the semester was pretty easy, 2nd half was a lot harder.
Let's get this straight, she is not that boring and she is actually very helpful when you ask. This class was not that interesting, but when is statistics interesting. You DO NOT need the textbook but make sure and do all of the online homeworks because they will really bring your grade down.
She is friendly and reasonable, but doesn't assign enough homework for you to be successful in her class. Do the applia and the supplemental HW and then do it a couple more times. She talks way to fast in class and is hard to keep up with. This was my one B- out of 4 other A's in a semester.
First of all, DO NOT BUY THE BOOK. You can't sell it back and you never use it. Just buy aplia off the website. As for the teacher, she is really monotone and hard to listen to. She doesn't take attendance but she does poll everywhere. She also was really unhelpful in her office hours. I don't reccomend her.
DO not buy book. you will never use it. Most say stats is hard, but in hearing other talk about the other teachers teachning this class, this is the teacher to take. tests are just like the practice test, and she curves the final grade based on the entire classes grades. Print out notes and take them! if you do this A is VERY attaiable
Well, this was an interesting course. The course material isn't difficult to understand, but at the same time, Professor Duncan didn't teach it clearly. ..A lot was self-taught by just going over the notes. It is not the most interesting course, but then again, I do not enjoy math. DO NOT BUY THE BOOK. I guarantee you will not open it once.
confusing clarity but big interest
She is a nice lady, knowledgeable but not very clear. Class is confusing at times, go see her andor TA for help. 3 midterms (one per couple chapters) and a comprehensive final. There is a few online lectures, each comes with a very easy quiz.
She writes down notes, you copy notes. That's the gist of class. Homework is very helpful, quizzes are easy, and the tests can be rough. If you ask her for help she is more than willing to help.
Duncan seems shy & uncomfortable teaching, which shows in her class averages. She did a generous curve at the end of the sem because everyone was doing so poorly. 8 hws, 2 midterms & a final. She doesn't explain things well, but if you have no choice but to take her, be prepared to self-teach to pass. She requires a hw partner. its doable tho
Took this class by accident (I had already taken a statistics class at my previous college) but I stuck with it because I thought it would be "fun", since I aced my last stats course. I recieved a D- (it was curved so luckily I passed with a C) She is a timid speaker and does NOT clarify. Expect the "do it yourself" approach. She's sweet though.
Do not take this professor. Her video lectures are bad! She actually knows the topics, but she does not know how to explain. I would took a lecture with professor Spoon, and it is a lot better. I also heard Levine was not bad.
Stay away! If you don't need to take this class then don't. Her online lectures are incredibly confusing and no matter how hard she tries, she fails to answer any questions in class. Get ready to teach yourself. She's a nice lady but isn't very good at teaching.
This class was only held as a hybrid class and was the hardest class I have taken this year. Very difficult to try to learn math online especially when the lecture videos were sometimes over an hour. The lectures did not match up to the exams, quizzes, or to what was on the tests. Overall very confusing and difficult course.
This class required work but if you have to want to learn and try, you got this. Went to her office hours once a week to ask about homework, and go over exams. She's always there to answer questions. make sure you know the material before the lecture quiz days. Also the curve was good. . She's a great lady and really cares about you.
.Tough class. Definitely try to understand the material. If you don't understand something, ASK! She's always there to answer questions and really wants you to do well. Only problem is that the material is hard, so you can't really blame her because she can't control that. She curved without really telling us so don't rely on it.
Lectures did not teach to the test
Prof. Duncan is great; you can tell she really wants everyone to learn the material well. The labs are easy if you have a great lab TA like I did (take Laura Li!). Hardest part is remembering to do the online homework. If you do it well though you can get 100 and use that to study for the test. If you study the homework you'll ace the class.
This is the hybrid style class so you mostly teach yourself the course. Gives extra credit on second midterm! Use her study guides and practice tests and make sure to have a good cheat sheet! Quizzes everyday in class and final was easy!
I never even spoke to her once. My TA could barely even speak English and Duncan's voice on the lecture videos was really hard to listen to as well. I SERIOUSLY recommend going to SI if they still have it for this course, it's the only reason I passed. F on the first midterm, C on the second, D on the last. Ended up w/ a C because of homework.
Duncans video lectures were outdated, very unclear and very disorganized. The lab TA was very unclear. It is very clear that neither the professor nor the TAs care about how the students do. Most kids will get Cs or below on tests and there isn't a curve. Hw is easy points, the labs are very unhelpful but Tas give answer so they're easy points.
Professors didn't really teach that well, they just described topics briefly. I learned more from doing the homework than watching the lectures. Quiz & lab every class meeting once a week. TAs were helpful, especially on the labs. You can watch the lectures at any time, but they are sometimes vague and hard to learn from. Doing the homework helps.
While the material wasn't hard, the set-up of the class makes learning the material harder. Online lecture videos are outdated, Tests were hard (who uses that many "check all that apply" questions?). Luckily had an awesome TA who helped me understand the material better. Learned more from the HW than lecture videos, take something else if you can.
Professor Duncan responds to emails, and is there to help, but your first line of communication will be with the TA assigned to the course. I had Xi Yan and she was amazing. It is a very hard class, but I was able to do it. I worked very hard, going to tutoring before exams, and having thorough cheat sheets (you're allowed 1 page of notes) got a B.
This a hybrid course so both in class and online. I think this was a huge factor for grades. The lectures and assignments need time. Go to class for the online quiz and the lab. Don't procrastinate. I wouldn't really recommend this professor. The final wrecked my grade. However, if you are good at graphs and data then this class is for you.
Worst professor I have ever had so far. This is a hybrid class and there is no direct communication between you and the professor. The only teacher student interaction is with the TA. My TA was an international student who has a thick accent and was no able not understand anything to me. Eventually, the student is left alone. NEVER TAKE HER CLASS.
You have to attend class to do a lab and a small quiz. The homework is hard. online lectures are horrible and dont help. 3 midterms and a final. U get a cheat sheet. She posts a study guide made by a former TA before each test. This guide literally taught me everything and is why I did good on the tests. Take a normal class instead of this one
She is an amazing professor. She's very nice, her lectures are excellent, and the class is very fun and interesting! It's a fairly easy class and statistics is a very important subject and she introduces and teaches it very well!
She is a great teacher. Explains things very well and makes statistics understandable.
Her videos are great, she makes an online class very manageable and makes learning statistics fun, and she's really pretty and nice!
Very underrated professor. The TA's are great too.
Stats is easy as long as you instantly get exposed to the material and Prof. Duncan does a great job in teaching it, I didn't feel there was anything wrong with her lectures or assignments, they just did the job done.
The class was pretty chill and it was my favorite class of the semester.
She cares about her students more than most professors and her lectures are pretty good.
This class sucks but it's not hard to get a good grade. Do the homework, do the labs until you get 100%, and watch the AP Kahn Academy videos to supplement the lecture slides. Don't even bother watching her lectures, they make no sense. Do all the extra credit at the end of semester. Score as bad as you can on the stats concepts pre-test
Her lectures were great and the tests were fairly easy.
STATS 250 IS THE WORST CLASS I HAVE EVER TAKEN The in class lab has nothing to do with the tests and the lectures are only online and move too fast and dont explain how to solve problems Tests are half conceptual and difficult to understand Duncan admitted some test questions are poorly written DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS and if you must, get a tutor
This was half-online half-lab course. Watched about two weeks worth of lectures from this professor then just stopped doing so. Your average professor. Lab was with TAs and was interesting because we messed around with excel.
Best class I've taken at State.
Really don't like her. Class isn't that bad. She isn't terrible but I think she sucks
This class was terrible. The organization between the online content, the homework, and the in-class work is non existent. There is almost no correlation between the things learned except for that the content is statistics. The homework was not about things we learned how to do in class, and the textbook was not helpful in solving problems.
This is an online class with an in-person lab. There are videos you watch weekly where you get graded on notes when in lab. The videos do not correlate to the lab, and the lab or videos do not correlate to the homework. This class is super unorganized and not well thought out. The Lab coordinator and professor obviously have a lack of communication
So stats is a difficult subject. She gives us cheat sheets to use on the exams, is very clear with her study guides, lots of homework (but that really helps w/ learning the material, and its not even that hard). Her lectures are difficult to follow and are kinda unhelpful, but there are different resources available. Lab is okay. Wouldnt take again
Sweet lady but not a good professor. She doesn't go into great detail about lessons, making it easy to get lost and not understand. She's kind of socially awkward. The labs have NOTHING to do with lectures and are a waste of time but attendance matters. 3 exams, and the final is accumulative, do bad on the pre-test!
This class if offered as a flipped classroom design. This means the lectures are recorded online by different professors and you attend lab in person where you have a quiz (EVERY WEEK) , study of the week, and a lab requiring the use of excel. DO NOT TAKE CLASS UNLESS YOU LIKE STATS.
Honest review: Duncan is my fav teacher at State. Shes kinda dorky but so smart it's cute. I learned the most from her class. she wont spoonfeed you but she def cares. Watch all the lectures, make time to study, hit her office hrs. If she was my age Kristin could def gitittt nomsayin ayee
This is probably one of the most organized classes I have taken at state so far. yet, there is a lot of time consuming assignments to do before class time that it becomes easy to get behind or skip class. however, the TA was really nice and always made sure I understood what I didn't understand. Great class overall.
WORST and most stressful class ever. You have to teach ourself everything. GO TO STATS TUTORING IN THE LIBRARY. Extremely hard class. Huge curve. 60% C . You never meet the actual teacher, on the TA. All the TA's have super thick accents. Take Lou Li for a TA, she'll actually teach you something. Tests and quizzes are open note.
Yeah Duncan is tough and there is a lot of work involved but stats is a tough class. She makes things pretty clear and I don't think you're going to find a better Professor honestly. The class isn't too hard overall and if you put in enough work you'll be more that okay. I didn't even watch most of the online lecture but just showed up to class.
This class is a nightmare. The lectures make no sense and confused me more than helped me. The lab has no relevance to the lectures and the TAs also seem confused by Dr. Duncan. The only thing helpful is the homework. Don't take this class if you don't have to.
Hybrid but the videos lectures are a must-watch. Without them, you'll fall behind in the labs very hard. After watching them tho, the labs are the perfect place to fill the holes that may surface during the videos. Slides were nice to follow and organized during videos. Two midterms and a cumulative final make up a large portion of grade so beware.
It was an online class, you would watch a lecture and you had to take notes, you would then have to come into class once a week for a lab in which you would have a quiz. The labs were longer then they needed to be and honestly a waste of time, but you had to go. I feel like I didn't learn anything and I struggled through the whole class.
you can tell that she tries her best while teaching, but she doesn't actually teach. she gives definitions of topics and doesn't explain how to do the work in your calculator. she makes this class much more difficult than it needs to be. I'm good at math and definitely struggling. don't take this class if you don't absolutely need to.
As someone who has excelled in every math class I have taken, this one was the hardest not because the concepts were difficult but because Duncan rarely explained concepts clearly. She rarely explains how to calculate things and were she got certain numbers from which makes it confusing to understand how to approach problems.
If you don't need this class for your major do yourself a favor and DON'T take it. While she is very helpful if you reach out to her, she doesn't know how to properly explain concepts in lecture, especially leaving out how to do calculations on your calculator, leaving you lost. The workload is honestly easy but still avoid this class at all costs.
I think that this class should not be a hybrid course. Her videos did not explain the concepts or how to solve the problems. She just said that you do this but did not explain how you are supposed to solve the problem which made understanding the material very difficult. All her lectures are pre-recorded which means that you can't ask any questions
This is the worst class I have ever taken. She clearly doesn't know how to teach properly. All she does is write the definitions of words on the notes she gives us but rarely explains the concept further than that. She rarely explains how to calculate problems and when she does she leaves out many critical steps which is no help. Avoid this class
LISTEN. If you don't need this class to fulfill your major prerequisite, don't take it. To be honest, this is the worst class I've ever taken at state. She does not explain the material good enough. The labs are pretty tough and they don't even help. You need to put in a LOT of effort to actually understand and pass the class. BIG CURVE btw
NOT WORTH. 70% of your grade is exams. Was told to not study homework problems because it wouldn't help me on the test. Also, reverse classroom, so watch a bunch of videos to then sit in front of your screen and do pointless labs during actual class time.
Her lecture videos are very confusing to understand. I didnt like the way she teaches because you need to remember vocab a lot in her class.
The video lectures were really hard to understand, she expects the students to know everything that she is talking about in her video lectures even though we met for one day of the week for labs and did not go over the videos. It is also a fast paced class and it has multiple quizzes as well as 2 midterms (20% each) and a final (30% of your grade).
Stats is super hard, even in Duncan's course. She does provide a BUNCH of study guides and helpful videos that make acing the exams a real possibility. Expect lots of lectures and lengthy assignments.
Her lectures well summarize the readings from the textbook. The people saying her lectures are hard to understand likely did not read the textbook before the lectures. Her class was mostly graded by two noncumulative midterms and a final cumulative exam. Professor Duncan is very quick to respond to question via email.
Stats is hard, but she makes everything as clear as she can. Her videos communicate the subject well and she's very helpful if you ask questions. Workload is a bit time consuming, but it's nothing crazy. Quizzes are easy. Tests are fair. Keep up with the material and you will be fine.
Professor isn't even there to teach the class which doesn't help the students learn. Mostly just following the lecture videos and filling in the blanks for notes and when we are in person for class all we do is work that we could've done at home. Class is a hot mess that is hard to follow
I have mixed feelings about Prof. Duncan. All I've seen of her is in the form of lecture videos in which she does a great job at explaining the concepts. The in-person sessions involve a knowledgeable TA guiding the class through assignments posted on Canvas by Prof. Duncan, and you'll definitely have to study lots extra to keep up on the material.
Overall, STATS is a pretty hard concept to understand and Duncan doesn't do the best job at explaining the concepts and how to do problems. The lab grad student teachers try their best to explain the concept but if you want an A, I would suggest going to their tutoring hours. The tests ultimately determine your grades but definitely do the work.
Duncan gives everything you need to learn for the test in her lectures. She does not explain it the best, but with the help of TAs and doing the webassign, it is pretty easy. She gives summaries for the lecture and cheat sheet for the tests, so as long as you understand what the formulas do, it is an easy A.
I enjoyed taking STAT 250 with Duncan. She is quick to respond to emails. This is a hybrid course: she lectures online; the labs are on campus and you must attend. WebAssign HW was fair (10%), 2 exams (20% each), final is 30%. Study the formulas and take good lecture notes before each exam (you can use a cheat sheet on them!) and you will do well.
There are two midterms both worth 20% and the final is worth 30%. So your grade is 70% exams. Easy to fall behind.
Video lectures are easy to navigate and explained well, but are abundant. Notes are fill-in from the videos. Material is fairly simple but there is so much to learn at once. Homework assignment and lab due each Friday, takes about 3 hours to complete. Two exams and a cumulative final.
This class could've been much better, but fell short. The Professor posts video lectures to learn the material, and leaves the weekly classes to be taught by her TAs who are hit or miss. If you go to office hours and use additional learning material such as YouTube/Khan Academy, you will pass. 3 big exams, class average scores in the 60s-70s.
Hybrid class, asynchronous lecture + in person lab. The class is very routine and the same every week: lecture, pre class quiz, in person quiz, lab and homework. it can be a lot of work if you are disorganized but if you like a weekly routine do it. Not many surprises. I couldn't stress how important it is to watch the lectures. Do the work ur good
Prof Duncan decided to have all lectures online and then in-person class time was just used to do lab projects with a T.A. Our T.A. never seemed to know what we were doing that week and it made the class feel like a waste of time. Homework is pretty easy but you're screwed if you don't watch the lectures at some point during the week.
The lectures are not that up to date and can be lengthy some weeks. Make sure you find a good TA when taking this course. Quizzes are open note and midterm and final allow cheat sheets
Not sure why Professor Duncan was given such low reviews, her teaching style works very well for me. We are expected to watch a lecture a week, and fill out the corresponding lecture notes. The labs relate to the lecture we are watching that week, along with a quiz and homework.
STATS MINORS BEWARE: 410 is a VERY difficult class because there are no lectures, just lazy videos that barely explain anything. Yes, she glazes over theory; however, all the R commands would have to be learned on your own and R is not a language with set syntax rules. Get ready to learn on your own and attempt to finish labs with lazy group mbrs.
I have never seen Prof Duncan in person because the TA teaches every class but if your looking for an easy stats class this is not the one. Each test is 20% and the final is 30%, with a quiz in each class. She seems nice but some concepts could have been explained/ applied better.
Awful teacher, would not recommend this class. I am an A student and barely got a C. Take a different stats class if possible. Not a caring teacher, weekly online problems due and the tests are basically your whole grade. The tests are awful, the averages are 60. Difficult to prepare for the tests and they are lockdown browser with zoom camera on.
I was really nervous about taking Stats with Dr. Duncan because of the reviews. I get it, it is a hard class, but she goes above and beyond to help. She responds to emails fairly quickly and she is willing to go over and explain anything outside of class. Stats was pretty hard for me and I had to work hard, but Dr. Duncan is an awesome teacher.
Unless you are an amazing test taker, you need to avoid this class. 70% of the grade is from 3 tests, one of them being the final. There are no curves, test corrections are really anything to bring your grade up besides the in-class assignments. Homework had no effect on my grade. Duncan never, not once, came to class and the TA "taught" the class.
Horrible. Duncan's lectures are not in-depth and if I had to guess they were probably recorded 3-7 years ago. The tests are your entire grade, and there are only 3 so if you do bad on one, there is nothing you can do to drastically help your grade. I have all A's beside this class as a stem major, so if you think that this is an easy A, good luck.
I was hesitant to take this class because of the reviews on here but was pleasantly surprised. Dr. Duncan is not the best at explaining concepts in her video lectures but this class requires effort beyond that. She cares, but will not spoon-feed anyone so go to office hours (her or the TAs) and use provided resources if you are struggling
I'm not a fan of stats to begin with, but Dr. Duncan provided multiple resources that helped me feel well-prepared before each exam (make use of the HW and practice exams). Lectures are prerecorded and lengthy, so spread them out throughout the week as to not become overwhelmed. This class is not easy per se, but put in the work and you'll succeed.
Honestly not as bad as I thought. Shes very easy to reach outside of class, responding almost immediately to emails. She cares a lot about students performances and has many available resources to help but most importantly her office hours. As long as you get 100% on the hw and labs you could still pass the class even if you had a low test average
Avoid at all cost. Her lectures are so long as well as the group labs which half of the people in your group ignored you until the day of it was due. The class structure is awful. If you asked a question she would make you feel dumb about not knowing the material in your past classes.
This class definitely requires self-motivation, as the lecture videos are online and you have to watch them before lab each week. But - as long as you take notes, you can use them for the weekly quiz. You also get review weeks and lots of help from the TAs. As long as you keep up with the work, you will do well. There is a BIG curve to pass.
Very caring professor but wouldn't explain the material. Would copy the textbook and regurgitate it on the board. Frequently makes mistakes in her own work, which she will catch and correct only about half of the time. Although she is very accessible outside of class. Still not very good at explaining the theory behind the math, or the math.
Worst professor I have ever had. She divided the class into 8 sections all taught by TA's. This was supposed to be a fully online class but we were required to come in one day a week for "labs" and exams. You have to watch her terrible lectures online on your own time. Did I saw this class was TERRIBLE? Yup. Don't take it.
She does go through lectures fairly fast to keep up with the pacing of the course, however, she does care that students understand the material. Lots of writing throughout lecture and quizzes every now and then, but she does provide a lot of feedback on quizzes and exams when the problem is attempted. Overall, she's a nice and good professor.
While I can forgive Professors who can't teach because they're there to reserach, with Duncan's case she isn't even tenured. She's bad at explaining the concepts, and would often assign homework that is not related to the quizzes or exams. She also relies on the mandatory videos to do her teaching as well. Not recommended if you can avoid her.
STAT250 is an easy class, all common sense, but make sure to take her for lab and not the TA's because they don't teach as well as her. People who pick her section have better averages for everything. If you watch all the lectures and do the homework, you will be prepared for the quizzes and exams. Very doable to get an A, love her.
The way the class is set up is very lazy and low effort on her part.
One of the worst professors I ever had. Her lectures are online and then we go to a lab class once a week taught by a TA. The online lectures extremely hard to follow, she doesn't explain concepts thoroughly, and the class has a very unfair weight with two midterms weighted at 20%, and a final weighted 30%, so 70% of your grade is based on tests.
Awful.
Absolutely horrible. She's too lazy to teach the class herself so you're gonna end up taking it with one of the many clueless TA's who won't bother teaching you a single thing. Maybe this course isn't difficult but the structure makes it way more complicated then it needs to be. I wouldn't recommend unless you have to in which case good luck...
horrible class
Duncan is not a very good professor. You'll need to read and reread the lecture notes to understand and she'll quiz you on obscure info in the homework. She is not great at lecturing, or with communicating info. However she does care about her students and will do her best to meet her students needs where she feels like she can.
I have taken two classes (410 and 250) with Professor Duncan, and I can safely say I would avoid her if at all possible. Her lecture style is confusing and often not directly related to the material you'll be tested on. She's also a bit too heavy on homework and other assignments.
Difficult class, professor does provide help outside of lecture, lecture style quite confusing, avoid taking if you can
The structure of this class is awful. Avoid at all costs. The lectures videos & notes take a long time to do, and she does not explain the concepts well at all. Lab does not help, it's just activities.
Make sure you don't attend the labs without watching the lecture videos. Beware that 70% of your grade is based on exams. She gives a practice exam before every midterm(somewhat helpful) and you are allowed a cheat sheet. Tons of formulas to memorize. Generous curve at the end. ATTEND ALL LABS. Not an easy class, put in the work and you will be ok!
I am so glad I got this class over with!!! Honestly I did not understand a single thing, the pre-recorded lectures are not very helpful and the lab isn't either. If you have to take this class for your pre-major, you are cooked. There was a somewhat generous curve at the end, which was the only way most of the students passed. GLHF!
70% of your grade is based on 2 midterms and a final. You go to one TA section a week but you watch video lectures on your own. The lectures are alright. Class material isn't too difficult but there's a lot of it and takes effort to fully understand. She does curve your final grade a bit at the end.
Tough class, but Unstuckstudy helped me get through it. Professor's lectures are confusing, but the practice exams were useful. Attend labs and study hard - the curve saved me in the end.
LOTS of information to understand and memorize. You could use a cheat sheet for all exams but it was still pretty difficult. The lecture is asynch and the lecture vids didn't really make much sense. She does curve final at the end.
As someone who loves math and stats, the set up of this course is very bad which causes such low grades. No not use homework as study material. Try to take the lab specifically with Dr. Duncan because the TA's tends to just give away answers. Most classes are heavily curved at the end due to so many students in the brink of failure. Good Luck!
Great professor. I got 104% in the course. You'll need to lock in during her online lectures, but she gives all the answers. Weekly online assignments take
Great professor. I got 104% in the course. You'll need to lock in during her online lectures, but she gives all the answers. Weekly online assignments take less than 2 hrs. Tons of practice exams with answers. DO THEM. Also, learn to use the TI-84; it has almost everything you'll need for the class.
Online lectures are extremely long, outdated, and confusing. Find YouTube videos instead. Learn how to use your calculator. 2 midterms are worth 40% of your grade, and the final is worth 30%, so be prepared for those. Lecture, homework, and labs are all different. Feels like 3 different classes. Find a study partner, but you will still be lost.
Lectures are online videos and labs are in-person. I've had previous experience with statistics so the material wasn't that hard to understand but for those who haven't had prior experience, it may be a little difficult. Two exams and one cumulative final and you get a cheat sheet for every exam.
The online lectures are very old and there are lots of mistakes that you need you be aware of. She is very nice, but she goes over the problems without explaining why we're taking the corresponding steps. She implies that we already know a majority of the material and kind of goes through the problems on her own.
Kind of bland. All the lectures are online, so it's hard to stay motivated to actually do them. Lab participation really counts. Exams are tough, and the final's on paper. The lowest score on the last exam was 35%. Not sure the flipped classroom thing really works.
A kind lady, but not an effective instructor. Speaks very quietly and quickly and hardly looks away from her screen for questions. This class requires more knowledge of calc, CS and stats than the prereqs imply. I'd take MATH 254, 252, & STAT 551A first. 2 exams (20% each, O/N). Project (20%) where you have to teach yourself a new statistics topic.
Effectively absent from the class, leaving the soulless TAs to do her bidding. All the lectures are old and full of mistakes and the only way to learn is through said lectures, as she is completely absent from the course.
Be ready to watch old lectures that run on forever. The videos are not engaging so it makes it incredibly difficult to stay motivated. Some lectures have mistakes and the Duncan does teach the in person class. TA's basically just do a short review and then spend the next 1 and a half hour doing the lab and activity. The exams are very difficult.
Overall it was a good course. I see many reviews here about her TA's running the course without her input but this wasn't the case for my section at all. TA's were present for class but rarely spoke. Online lectures were outdated in some cases. Clear expectations of assignments and due dates. Intro level class, so some students werent very engaged.
Dr Duncan is so sweet and kind, but her class is run by a TA. TA was great, but asking questions was difficult as he could not properly explain certain things in a way that made sense. GO TO DR DUNCANS OFFICE HOURS! I am not a math person and struggled with this class, but she made everything make sense!
She's a sweet lady but genuinely does not know how to teach. Lectures are really old, online, and are guided notes format which but half of the words on the slides don't even make sense. If you have to have to take this class, good luck. Find study buddies and take advantage of all the quizzes and preparation, and use the study guides from the TA.
