attendance is mandatory!! go to her classes because her midterms and exams will be 90% based on the lectures. knows the music field very well, and is professional in class. liberal course, but she takes it seriously, which is a good thing. decent marker. (p.s. she should smile more.)
Good teacher good lectures but she definetly has some kind of chip on her shoulder, she gets upset quickly and is a very hard marker i had her for a summer school course (which should of been a breeze) she was so picky and particular if the wrong word is used but means the same thing she will mark you wrong and if your spelling is no good, no marks
She is really nice and helpful. If you go to class you will do well.
One of the great profs at Ryerson. She is very nice and helpful. Tests can be challenging but she reviews all the concepts clearly before the tests.
Make sure you participate in class and ask questions, many thought she was mean but never actually got to know her. She is actually very nice and even nicer if you show you're interested in what she's teaching.
The course itself is easy, and almost boring if you actually consider yourself someone who knows a lot about music. She can be pretty dry as a prof. The class itself is pretty skippable but make sure to get notes from a classmate. If you don't have the notes you're pretty screwed.
No essay in her course, and marked on group work. wtf marks for reporting on how well you work with others?! lol. easy marks tho. good subject and course. Sooo easy. (;
She gave us candy and popcorn. What kind of lower liberal gives candy and popcorn. Highly recommend if you need to boost your gpa and have an easy course for the semester. She will literally hand you what is needed for the midterm and final. The essay is another story, that's not her say. It was a pretty long research essay imo.
Honest to God she is one of the most easiest teachers to have. I loved her teaching style and some of the movies we learnt In class. Very chill, but don't talk while she's talking. She doesn't like it and she will SIT and WAIT. Don't ever fall asleep either. She loves when students participate and doesn't rely on the text much. Study all notes too
One of the greatest profs I had so far. Took this course in summer school. It was a breeze. The content itself is pretty boring and can be dry but as long as all the content is memorized, instant A! Go to all her classes. Everything on the midterm and exam was purely on the notes in class. Good luck !
She is great. She responds to email quickly. Very helpful. You need to go to class to take good notes. Attendance matters. Final project is fun. She is thorough - no surprises ever.
Not the best prof, but alright.
Very good Prof. She tells you exactly what's going to be on the Midterm and Final and doesn't mark hardly on essay papers. As long as you go to class and take notes you won't need the textbook and can earn an easy A
Regardless if you have a music background or not, Kristin will ensure that you are successful in the course. Myself personally, had zero knowledge of music and still did well in the course. She tells you what to study for on the midterms/finals and helps a lot for the essay. Would recommend, taking her again next year.
Great prof overall! Very pleasant and always willing to help. Fair marker. Highly recommend
Kristen is very kind and knowledgeable. She expects her students to participate but understands that everyone comes with a different musical background. She is always ready to accommodate and answer questions sincerely. Kirstin always mentions her office hours and invites students to come in if they need any help.
Caring, knowledgeable, clear and easy to understand. would recommend her for any course that she teaches. Clear requirements for essay, midterms and exam.
Great prof, gives you exactly what you need to succeed in the course. Go to class and write down the notes because she doesn't post slides.
Very easy class. Just attend all the lectures to practice the listening concept. I studied for about 5-8 hours for the midterm and the exam and somehow got the exact same grade on both. 84.5 % Prof is very friendly and engaging. Highly recommend it for easy grades and have fun at the same time.
It takes forever for marking to comein
I had Kristen as my professor this semester for MUS201 (Intro to Classical Music) and she was an excellent prof. She was always very clear, concise, and told you exactly what to study for midterms and the final. She marks a little weirdly on participation, so don't skip class; she also doesn't post lecture slides. Overall, very nice and passionate.
Dr. Force is a great prof, she tells you exactly what will be on the midterm and exam with an extensive outline so you'll get A's. She also encourages students to do small participation tasks in class which is worth 10% of your final mark, so it is a good choice to attend lectures. Overall, her class was easy and fun.
She's really nice, just don't talk during class. She doesn't post lecture notes online so you have to take notes and use the textbook (just rent one). The whole course (except essay) is memorization. She's super specific about whats on the tests. I'm in engineering and am terrible at memorizing , and this course was super easy
tough
Tells you exactly what is on the final and midterm. Pretty much holds your hand all the way through so it's SUPER easy. Recommend
She's amazing! Very generous in terms of marks, and the way she teaches is really engaging and fun! I literally wrote the essay in 3 days and passed with an A- and that says a lot coming from someone who doesn't work well under pressure. One of the greatest profs at Ryerson by far! You won't regret taking her!
If you haven't taken a music course before, don't bother taking this course because she will not show much lenience in terms of marking between a music expert vs a novice. More than half the class has a background in music and they will quickly eat up the top spots of the class even if you work equally as hard.
IT IS NOT A BIRDCOURSE!! If you know less about music, this course could be your nightmare. I believe she's a nice person but she marks too hard. The course outline is clear but the lecture is sometimes confusing.
Definitely agree with the two negative comments below. She isn't easy at understanding everyone comes from different musical backgrounds. Her lessons aren't thoroughly explained, and she expects you to understand what she throws at you right away. I'd advise you not to take this course if you don't have a music THEORY background.
This is basically a music theory class from the ground up but a bit fast paced if you haven't done any theory at all before. She's really nice and helps people understand better at the end of class. Participating and Attending is crucial, 10% of your mark is doing the in-class assignments. She doesn't post her notes online.
Favourite professor so far. You can take her even if you never learned music before. She's super easy and it's easy to make friends in this class lol
This prof is probably one of the best profs at Ryerson. She is very well aware that not all of her students have a background in music, so she teaches at a very slow pace and often repeats herself to reinforce understanding of concepts. She gives out worksheets to practice in class as well and tells you exactly what is on the test and on the final.
She's actually a great prof but she can be tough. Participation and class attendance was an important part of this course. She gave me an 89% on my essay and so I asked what I could've done better since the feedback, to me, was insufficient. She told me my essay was great but she just does not give out 90s.
Very nice prof! No need for a music background to do well in this course. Highly recommend!
Dr. Force was amazing! She made the course content super clear so that non-musicians were able to succeed. Attendance is mandatory as all the information is shared in lecture and not online. The readings weren't necessary, but buy the textbook as it's mandatory for the essay.
Kristin is a knowledgeable prof and helps every student succeed. If you don't do well in her classes you're not trying. She doesn't post notes so you have to go to class but she outlines everything you need to know for the essay and exam!! You do NOT need a music background for this class, I didn't have one and I did really well in the class!
This prof is insanely EASY. The exam questions are literally off her slides and she does a thorough review before the exam (which most of her review covers a big chunk of questions that are on the exam). She doesn't post the slides however but all you got to do is go to class and you'll pass. Also don't need musical background and easy essay marker
A really good prof. She's very helpful and gives a lot of time to do practice work so if you have any problems you can ask her right away. She's also very clear with how she grades her assignments/essays. So if you stick to that criteria, you'll be good!
nice prof who thoroughly explains concepts. lectures are engaging but she doesn't post her notes. midterm and exam are a fine with a good amount of studying. participation marks & essay are free marks.
Definitely one of the greater Music profs Ryerson has to offer, she doesn't post slides which kinda sucks, but attending the lectures really helps you memorize everything and is actually pretty fun for the most part.
As an online professor, Kristin was amazing! For students with little to no music background, she was very lenient and made the course very beginner friendly, so as long as you put the effort in, you will do well. The essay and tests were fairly straightforward and so is her grading scheme. Definitely recommend!
She's a great prof in general! Follow the criteria for the essay and you will be set. Also, go to class as she does not post the slides and the tests are directly correlated to what she talks about in class.
Kirstin was a good prof. If you do the readings, pay attention/take notes in class you will have no problem. Do not take this course thinking it will be a bird course!! Lots of memorization involved for the midterm/exam which is MC and SA/LA.
Amazing prof, everything that is on the midterm or exam is from her slides. Make sure to attend the classes as she doesn't post the slides online. She is easy to reach out to and she would help you whenever you have a question.
If I can rate 0 star, I will. Terrible PROF. If you don't have any background of music, don't take this course!!!!!
If you're even remotely interested in the material, stay away. Her lecture style is distracting - she jumps all over the place, and for some reason turns off the projector when she switches slides, which is the most frustrating thing I've ever experienced. She's kinda condescending and rather cold, despite the fun mom energy she has in class.
Professor Force makes this course easy to understand for students who don't have a musical background which I appreciated. The grading is very clear and if you participate actively on the discussion boards, the tests are easy to complete as well. You need to put in time to do well but the material is not super complicated and Kristen is helpful.
She's very energetic and has positive vibes but she goes through slides quickly. You can ask for her to go back and she will but she doesn't post slides online. Going to class is a must, her exams are everything on her exam reviews but her final was so hard and long. Participation is based off of what you do in class. The essay is difficult too.
The best prof I have had at Ryerson! I highly recommend her for any music course you take. I have had her for 2 music courses so far and I loved the classes!
Dr Force is easily one of the best profs I've had. She is very understanding and responsive to students' questions and concerns. She sets clear expectations and is available for additional help. She provides punctual, sufficient feedback. The course has many readings but is not hard; if you put in the effort, you can do very well. Highly recommend!
I have had Dr. Force 3 times now. Even during this online-esque class setup, she still manages to make the class easy and flow really well without any stress. Though I already have a music background and knew a lot of the content beforehand, I believe she explains music theory well and anyone looking to learn music should take HER classes!
Kristin Force was a great prof! She was super helpful if you had questions and her class was super interesting. I got by without using the textbook at all! However, class is mandatory in order to obtain all of the notes.
Kristin was a great professor. I had no background in music but she was very accessible and helpful over email. You have to upload a discussion post every week and reply to 2 classmates which is not too hard. There are also two listening tests where you'll have to analyze musical pieces. It is a take-home test and you have a while to submit them.
Horrible class if you want any teaching. Expect to be taught from endless booklets she gives with very little explanation. I took this class hearing about how good of a professor Force is. Well maybe so, too bad I would not know because she does not teach. She literally does not speak or anything. This class should not cost what it costs.
HORRIBLE PROFESSOR. DOES NOT HAVE ANY LECTURES AT ALL NOR EXPLAIN ANYTHING. Almost unreachable completely. I cannot believe how this professor nose-dived. Asks questions not discussed at all in course content. She ruined music for me and I never want to encounter her or music courses again.
The course was online so there were no lectures but instead we had to read modules and write weekly discussion posts. She was a very lenient marker on the essay/tests and I 100% recommend taking a liberal with her! For those who aren't good at self-directed learning though - I recommend taking another prof/course since there are no lectures
Horrible professor (she does not even deserve to be called one). Asks so many things never adequately covered in class (sometimes not at all). No lectures at all. Totally regret taking this class.
She did no explain that on the test that we could select more than one answer. I thought one would be enough. Maybe a test review would have been helpful.
Despite my final grade, this was probably one of my worst experiences. Basically had to teach everything to myself to ensure a good grade which was extremely time-consuming. She seems nice and is accessible through e-mail but beware this whole listening course is taught through booklets which are not helpful. If you have prior experience it's EZ.
I quite enjoyed professor Force's class. Yes it requires some discipline, but she is clearly used to the online scene and her expectations are very clear. I found the little module booklets to be interesting, and your options for the final paper are quite wide. She understands that many of us are not accustomed to musicology, grade reflects this.
Probably one of the easiest graders I've ever seen from a university prof. I was kinda lost on some parts of the final and she still gave me over a 90 on it. The final wasn't even cumulative. She tells you exactly what she wants on the essay and half the essay is just paraphrasing a biography. She doesn't post lecture slides however so go to class.
Makes you do weekly discussion board posts and also reply to 2 other posts. I feel that these posts are disingenuous and a farce. For a introductory music course, there is a lot of new terminology which are overwhelming. Discussion board 25%, Listening test 1 20%, Essay 30%, listening test 2 25%. U also have to pass the listening to pass the course
super sweet & a good prof. marks very fair!! literally tells you what to study for the exams which is very helpful. Make sure you go to class, if u skip, you will be lost. almost everything is done in class, besides the essay and studying for the exam. Does not pst powerpoint, so make sure you actually attend. Good for a beginning music course!
Clear lectures with bullet points & she gives you time to jot everything down. Not heavy with the homework, just weekly worksheets that don't need to be handed in. Her midterm and final test are very easy if you read the textbook and memorize all the songs. The memorization is time-consuming but not hard. Would take a class from her again.
Need to be patient at class and you will receive a great mark.
She's the cutest! I had 0 knowledge in music, but she made it so much easier. She does not post her slides, but gives plenty of time to write the slides. For exams/midterm it was straightforward as she gives us a review sheet on exactly what's gonna come. She also is an easy marker, for essays many got in the 80 & 90s. Overall, a great professor!
Probably the most easiest course I've done. If you need a gpa boost, I recommend doing this course with this prof cuz she is the most easiest marker ever. 2 tests, listening quiz, and an essay. The only problem is that you have to attend her lectures since she doesn;t post the slides online. You also dont have to buy the textbook (i didnt use it).
Easiest course ever. She provides a review sheet for the exams and EVERYTHING on the review is on the exam. Attendance is mandatory if you want participation marks. As long as you keep up with the lecture slides every week, its the easiest A.
Very clear criteria. Memory heavy exams so get ready for that, and doesn't post lecture slides online so ATTEND ALL LECTURES IS A MUST.
Attend class and take notes ALWAYS, do the worksheets and participate. I had minimal knowledge of music (studied music 10 yrs ago when I was a kid) and did well because she explains everything AMAZINGLY, she is hilarious and class was fun even online. She tells you how to prepare for evaluations. She is kind hearted and tries to help her students.
Heavy course in terms of content, but she made it very enjoyable. Attendance was technically not mandatory, but there were weekly in class assignments for participation marks. Exams were pretty difficult if you didn't have much memorized. She was a great prof, very encouraging and gave good feedback on the final essay.
Dr. Force was an amazing prof for MUS101. It is somewhat beginner friendly but may require you to practice on your own - the essay looks more at your analysis abilities. I think it would be so much easier for someone with experience in music. Lots of memorization for the exam but she is clear with her expectations and marks fairly easily.
Super nice and gave extra participation marks for attending an opera show. Since the course is mainly history, the more detail you go into on the exam, the better your mark will be. She also doesn't post the lecture slides on D2L, so be prepared to either show up for every lecture or make some friends. Great prof. overall, super engaging & fun!
Refused to answer my questions for the rest of the semester after seeing I had youtube open on my laptop. I had just sat down in class and was going to close it. Holding a grudge on a first year student for that is crazy.
She is a good teacher who makes the grading scheme very clear. She also gives good feedback on work that can be improved and how you lost marks on an piece of work if you did. I didn't really study much so its a lot of my part for getting a B, but if you study, you can definitely get an A- and higher in her class as she is very fair when marking.
She is a easy grader and tells the class what to expect for evaluations. Make sure to attend class as participation matters and because she includes a lot of the content covered in class on midterm and finals. Overall, I would recommend taking MUS101 with her if you want an easy elective class.
Kristin Force is a decent marker, but she tends to put some things that she did not talk about in the lectures on her tests. The lectures are covers simple topics but the reading material is harder to understand which I feel was not the best. I was told this was an easy course, but Kristin Force is quite challenging
I took this course in Spring 2023 and absolutely loved the course! Kristin has clear grading material and fairly easy tests. Participation matters a little but its super easy to make friends in the course!!
Took this course in Fall 2023 and was my second course with Professor Kristin Force. Love the content! Graded by a few things but she allows extra credit to boost your mark! Will take more classes with her in the future for sure!
Dr. Force is an excellent professor. She is caring and understanding, and she provides clear expectations for assignments. The course requires weekly readings through modules, answering and replying to 2 peers under discussions, 2 tests, and an essay. Overall, she is an amazing professor. I would definitely recommend her!
Kristen is an amazing prof!! she's strict on attendance since she doesn't post lecs but the sweetest and most understanding prof i've had! *note: attend class! its 2 days a week, split into a 1&2hr class. im very shy (lol) & didn't participate in class, but did attend MOST of the lectures&she does in class participation which helped get full marks
I'm a beginner to music theory and this prof is so useless it's insane. Ive emailed her for help but all she says is to review her slides that have no information and the useless textbook. She is also passive-aggressive in class in terms of questions, she answers them in a way that expects us to know this information as beginners, and its annoying
I think she was a great prof! She is very clear with her grading and during her lectures (not recorded) she even drops hints about the exam. The exams also have a very clear layout to them so you know what you should prepare for before hand. Make sure you have good notes from the textbook and you attend her lectures to be well prepared.
Prof Force was a good prof, but can be rude during the zoom; telling people to stop chatting etc. Exams were pretty easy, essay was a calm one not too hard. Not much else to say, she just seems very strict or mad all the time. Otherwise she is passionate about what she teaches!
I have taken 3 classes with Kristin across 4 years of my degree, and I can confidently say that the quality of her teaching skills/style has significantly decreased over time. Her lectures now over-rely on class participation for teaching the course content, + she almost refuses to use slideshows (like she used to) to teach us info needed for exams
i don't know what to say, she's the best prof since I met her in MUS201, especially in this course, MUS507
Prof Force is goated, but you have to go to her lectures and write all the notes if you want to do well. Grading is generous, and sometimes gives bonus marks for exams. Exams are almost always exactly what she tells you are going to be on them. Her lectures are also pretty engaging
She's a pretty good prof. She stays after lecture every week for questions and has zoom meeting office hours. It's hard to not understand the content if you attend all lectures, do weekly worksheets, and ask questions after class. I missed some lectures but she asnwered questions when I asked but if you miss lecture she won't re do it for you
Professor Force is amazing. She explains what she expects from you, and exams are easy as long as you attend the class and take notes. She does not post lecture slides, so participation is mandatory. She has a clear grading criteria and is very organized! I would take her class again.
She seems to grade harder everytime I take her... She gets stricter and stricter too. Overall an easy prof, but idk what is up lately.
In all, this class and Professor Force was pretty good, although there are weekly discussion boards. The grading was pretty fair and if you put in a bit of effort into the test and essay, you'll be fine.
Dr. Force was incredible, and I'm not even exaggerating. If you try and work hard, read the e-book and participate in class, you will definitely succeed. Ask questions, especially for assignments/exams, SHOW UP TO CLASS - this is important, and you'll learn a lot. She also gave little gifts to students who excelled, which was so kind of her!!!
Amazing, no words.
Dr. Force is simply a very good professor. This course is based on 4 things - discussion boards, midterm, essay, and final exam for your entire grade. If you show up to class, do the discussion boards and essay properly by following her criteria and rubric/expectations, you'll do great. I took this course as my elective and am ending with an A!
MUS101 great course as an liberal for easy marks. Force is an nice professor. Just got to attend in class, sometimes be active for participation marks. Do your little studying before test, you'll get easy grades. Note-taking is quite important in her class so skipping is not ideal here. Her test sometimes throws in random question our of boundary.
She was a good professor overall. I found this class to be a lot of work for an elective. I appreciated that her lectures were about an hour long and well-structured, which made them manageable. I did a lot more work for this class than any of my other ones.
