She's a nice lady but she's new to the game so she hasn't had much experience with how to lead a classroom. Often confused and made it seem like the class was cool until AFTER add/drop so we were stuck. No notes, just pictures on slides and her annoying voice. 3 tests, 1 paper, a ton of reading every night, and 2 irrelevant quizzes.
Her lectures are pretty unorganized and it makes it difficult for studying purposes. 2 tests (midterm and final), a paper, and two map quizzes. You can make a B without too much effort though. Just a very boring class and confusing lectures.
Good teacher, knows what she's doing. The class topics are very interesting and contrary to popular opinion, she knows what she is doing and is helpful.
I loved this teacher. She is so fun, nice and entertaining. Her lectures are a little scattered and hard to follow but she gives a study guide for everything and the book is helpful. Two exams, two quizzes, and a paper. You have to try to fail her class. Material is easy and she gives you plenty of opportunities to do well.
Professor Halvorson is a top notch instructor; her course pre-modern history covers a lot of material but she plans her course magnificently and concisely. I recommend her with two thumbs up!
Awesome class!!
She was really scattered but ended up linking everything together by the end. Has a lot of energy and is really passionate about her topic.
TAKE HER! Exams are are a little tough, but if you come to class, take notes, and do readings you can do it! Also, you have to actually study. She is awesome though and really enjoys what she teaches.. which makes it better for you. She's very laid back and cool.
You are very lucky if you get her. The class isn't just lectures too, she adds movies in there to keep it interesting. Her tests/quizzes are fairly easy IF YOU STUDY. All in all she's awesome, especially if you take the time to talk to her. I would recommend every time.
Take this class, Ms. Halvorson is so helpful and really cares about her students. She is always willing to help you if you need and she offers extra credit. She wants you to pass the class. If you study and listen and take notes you will be fine. There at 2 quizzes which are not hard, a midterm and final and one paper that is not hard! TAKE HER!
She doesn't take attendance, but if you don't go to class then you will miss a LOT of information that will be on the tests. If you pay attention, take notes, and study then the tests aren't that bad and she gives you a study guide. Only homework is reading and some discussion posts. There is also a big paper, but not that bad. Overall I enjoyed it
This class was very interesting and the professor is super nice and cool. She is always there to help you with things, her lectures are not boring and you learn a lot just by showing up to class. We had two quizzes and two tests and if you listen in class you will do fine. I loved this class only because she was teaching and made it fun.
She is great! Are you interested in ancient Egypt? That is her specialty. There is no attendance policy and her tesst all have study guides to them so you know what to expect. She is always available for help.
Excellent! I highly recommend taking her HIST 115 class.
She was a great professor; very upfront and honest about everything that we would be doing in class. She assigned very little homework. I would highly recommend her.
tests were all memorization and classes were just lectures, pretty easy class if you pay attention and study for the two tests
Absolutely AMAZING! I highly suggest taking her for premodern history! Only 2 tests, 2 quizzes and a final paper! Quizzes are easy 100s but you have to put in a little bit of work for the tests. Attendance is important for information but you won't fail if you miss multiple classes. She is so cool and laid back. HIGHLY Recommend!!!
Kristin is so chill and I kinda aspire to be her. Barely used my book except when studying for the two tests. She gives study guides so as long as you actually put in time you will do well. Show up and study you will be fine. No attendance policy so even if you don't show up and get notes from a friend you will be okay. Highly recommend.
She is very fun and she loves the subject and is very knowledgable. She gives specific directions on her assignments, but there aren't many assignments so make sure to follow all her instructions to do well on them.
She is so funny! When I first thought about taking history I was like UGH I hate history its so boring. After her class I was shocked. She made the class so interesting and she was so funny! She is a great teacher, explains everything really well and she puts her twist on it to make it interesting. I would take her again in a heart beat.
Halvorson was a wonderful professor. Her course focused on religion, but religion wasn't even addressed until the end of the semester. She had 2 quizzes (fill in the blank), 2 tests (short sentence IDs, fill in the blank, multiple choice, essay), and a paper (5 pgs) written about a primary source. Easy class if you take notes. She was wonderful!
Halvorson is such a lovely lady! Her pre-modern history class is super interesting and low-key. She's really laid back and super welcoming during office hours. I really suggest that you go see her because she loves it.
Love Dr. Halvorson! Her class is very interesting and it's easy to get a good grade. Take notes and you won't need the book!
She is a great professor. She is always super helpful. She doesn't have many assignments throughout the year but you should definitely stay on top of them. I think as long as you stay on top of notes and do the work you should pass. Whenever she is in for office hours she is always willing to help a student that comes in.
I loved her, she was great and very open with us and seemed like she genuinely cared. Although I loved her the class itself was extremely hard. She does not take attendance but if you don't go to class and get the notes it will be even more difficult. You do not use your book at all so do not bother wasting your money.
Professor Halvorson is by far my favorite History professor. She is so understanding and works with you throughout the course. You can get the powerpoints so that will help you for the quizzes, midterm, and final. She makes you work for your grade but if you attend the class and pay attention you are guaranteed an A.
Professor Halvorson is a free spirited, chill teacher who is great to have as a freshman. She really cares how her students do in her class and works hard to be able to relate to them while still leading her class respectfully. Attendance is not needed especially if you can get the notes from others. She gives you a study guide before tests!
She is an amazing teacher.
Professor Halvorson is awesome. I took her without reading anything about her and it didn't backfire. She lays out her expectations and assignments at the beginning of the year and provides extra credit opportunities. Show up to class and take good lecture notes and it'll be an easy class.
I took her seeing the reviews on here seeing she was easy. I found her to be overly difficult. While she is spunky and funny, she is not a professor I would recommend. Her tests and grading is hard. Subjective essay grader. Very spoken anti christian, very feminist. Talks about her drinking and social life a lot, which is odd. She's a real kook.
She is difficult and quirky. Her grading is pretty subjective on essays. Not an easy A for a gen-ed. She is also pretty outspoken about her dislike for religion. She is also pretty feminist. She talks about her personal life a lot and it can be awkward.
Lots of extra credit opportunities, attendance is not mandatory. Lectures are interesting and she is hilarious and understanding. Easy grader with lots of good feedback, little homework assignments that are easy and only a few. Tests are easy
5 homework assignments, 1 paper, 4 quizzes, 2 exams (midterm and final). Attendance is not mandatory but a lot of info comes from lectures. Shares her powerpoints. Laid back and likes to gab before class starts about everything from what we are doing in our lives to sharing her life experiences. Always accessible. Offers tons of extra credit.
Prof Halvorson is amazing. Encouraging & sooooo funny. The information covered in this class is even interesting, i wish i could take it again. Midterm, Final, a few readings, and Major paper. Fair grader. Don't skip too many classes. TAKE HER.
She is the best. Her class was so much fun- show up and you will be fine. However, there is no attendance policy and all powerpoints are posted online. 1 paper and 4 short quizzes plus the midterm and final. She is the nicest and most chill lady ever- used to have dreadlocks for 10 years back in the day. I would DEFINITLEY take her again.
Professor Halvorson is one of my favorite professors! Her class on ancient Egypt is definitely a lot of material, but easy to understand if you work for it. She took attendance at the beginning of the semester, but eventually stopped and didn't care if only half the class showed up that day. Hard exams but lots of extra credit and she's so caring!!
Going to professor Halvorson's class was never something I dreaded. I always genuinely enjoyed her lectures. She is extremely passionate and knowledgeable about Egypt. She posts all of the slide shows on oaks, and gives study guides for all of the exams.
She's very passionate about Egypt and knows what she's talking about. There are limited assignments so it's hard to get an A. Her tests and quizzes are difficult because you get so much information to study for then 25% of it is on the test. She's hilarious and her lectures are less boring than most teachers.
Professor Halvorson is amazing! She focuses on Egypt and provides study guides for her tests. She doesn't take attendance a lot but most of her lectures come out of her mouth so don't skip class! Participation is based on attendance and speaking out loud so reading the book might help, but I did fine without reading it. Would take her again.
Professor Halvorson is so awesome! She gives great feedback and has very clear grading criteria. There are 2 primary source analysis papers but she has you write them in a question and answer format so its super easy. She is so flexible with attendance too! She is definitely one of the best professors at CofC!
Professor Halvorson is the best! She is so much fun and so passionate about the content. She is very intelligent and is always willing to help in anyway. I hate history, but this class was the best and was really interesting. Lecture heavy, attendance isn't mandatory but she randomly takes attendance and will care about you more if you come.
Professor Halvorson was funny and offered extra credit. She was very lecture heavy, so if you aren't able to focus well, this isn't the class for you. However, she always tried to make the material interesting and was always understanding about missing class for work.
I LOVE PROFESSOR HALVORSON! Her lectures are always super engaging and she really cares about her students and is super understanding about homework/tests. She also gives SO much extra credit- but you have to ask for it! She sometimes took attendance, but it was random. Overall, 10/10 I would definitely recommend her to other students!!!
Professor Halvorson is a wonderful person I love her!! She is lecture heavy, but she's super passionate about ancient Egypt which helped keep me engaged. Her grading is easy, and she gives lots of feedback to improve on the next assignment. Two primary source essays (fairly easy), a midterm, and a final are the biggest assignments.
She honestly grades so ridiculously. I followed every guideline and still got by with average grading. She expects way too much considering it is just a level 100 class. Overall fine class take it but if you need to take a history just to get credits don't take her. She's also super emotional and sends passive-aggressive emails.
Don't take Halvorson's class, especially during COVID. I went to the dean twice because of how unaccommodating she was. She was also very unprofessional. She stated I "made her a bad person" when I got her "in trouble" for taking her to the dean. She implemented an attendance policy mid semester. She also will grade harshly if she doesn't like you
I love this professor! One of the only professor/teacher I can really say that. She's so nice and funny. The class is super easy if you listen to the lectures and do the reading. The only somewhat difficult thing was the final bc you had to draw but to the beginning of the semester. Everything was open note but I never really needed that.
Halvorson was not very accommodating, especially during COVID, even with clear accommodations. She does not grade well. I would follow the rubric to the nine and would still not be able to get a above average grade. Emails are also super super passive aggressive and feels the need to share her feelings with the class, like we are her therapist.
Ms. Halvorson was very fun to be around. She has a positive attitude and is very engaged. The exams can be a bit challenging, but if you work hard, you'll do well. She really tries to be of help and is accessible outside of class. Would recommend her to anyone taking History 115.
Shes honestly a great and easy professor. if you had a bad experience with her it was probably from not showing up to class. she states at the beginning that attendance isn't mandatory but it will affect your grade. hardly any work outside of class and big grades were easy with little studying.
she grades everything very harsh but it not clear on what she is grading. she is not organized at all and wings everything by the week. she is not accomandating at all.
Absolute brutal class. Rambles on about her life and makes everything extremely weird with the things she says that just isn't part of the class. teaches theories rather then what is supposed to be on the test, and brings her personal opinions rather then actual book facts.
class was only lectures, very sweet prof, can grade kinda harsh, assigns a lot of reading but you don't really need to do it
Honestly, she was great and funny. She is an alumnus so you really feel comforted. I didn't go to class at all after midterms and still got a good grade. Don't bother reading the book because she tests off of her lectures. I got the worst grade on her exams but she gives you as much extra credit as you want, so there is no way you won't pass.
She has a lot of nice qualities BUT, she's kinda chaotic. She's going to overshare about her personal life and opinions. Sometimes her 'theories' have nothing to do with the actual lesson or material. The exams are in a kinda weird format but study and you'll do well. Her personality is definitely an acquired taste, make sure you're up for it!
Attendance does matter. She sometimes tests off stuff she says from her mouth that are not in the PowerPoints. Provides extra credit opportunities. One of my more laidback teachers and understands we're humans and have lives. Will grant extensions if needed. I personally loved her.
Professor Halvorson is super nice, funny, and definitely makes learning about Ancient Egypt interesting. There are about five quizzes throughout the semester, and the only other grades consist of two primary source analyses, the midterm, and the final exam. The material was easy to understand if you show up to class. Loved her!
Extremely nice and the class is easy. Gives easy assignments and quizzes. Only two essays and two exams. Just listen and take notes and you will be fine.
She made history very interesting even though I hated history in high school. The quizzes and two papers are easy if you pay attention in class because she basically tells you the answers. Always encouraged people to ask questions and go to office hours but every time I talked to her she had an attitude, but was nice while teaching.
Honestly seems like a cool person & enjoys teaching but...she gave me a C- on our quiz for mixing up a single word. She doesn't give her students a calendar to keep track of due assignments. She had the audacity to give me a 70 for "grammar" then send me a comment on my assignment using the wrong form of "their"...like check urself babe.
Is weirdly personal and laughs at herself the whole period of class. Does not teach well and ancient Egypt is confusing as hell to begin with. She's a a hard grader and is not clear with dates or instructions
Very funny and tries to make ancient Egypt as interesting as possible. A lot of people did really bad on the midterm but her study guide laid everything out clearly so as long as you take notes and study for the few tests she gives, you will do well. She's also a DJ on the weekends (DJ Tuff Girl)
This class was pretty hard just because it is so lecture heavy and you have to study so much for the midterm and the final. Professor Halvorson was very nice but is easily distracted.
Prof. Halvorson is such a nice woman and is genuinely passionate about the topics she is teaching. When it was time to write papers she was more than happy to meet during office hours to go over what I had written and gave helpful feedback. This class is mainly memorization, so if you can't do that then this definitely is not for you.
She gives off the impression that she is gracious and accommodating but in reality she won't hesitate to give you a 0 which can be detrimental to your grade bc she only puts a few things in the gradebook that are all weighed equally. Be prepared to listen in class bc exams are lecture heavy. Its awkward how much she spills her feelings to the class
Her personality is not for everyone. Some topics she covers or the way she speaks about things can make the class uncomfy. Lots of lecture must take notes if you want to pass exams. Her exams were easy if you study. One three page paper during the course which she takes very seriously. It was a fine class, interesting topics covered on egypt.
Best history professor I've ever had, she is so kind and funny and it is obvious she loves her subject. Class is so easy if you take basic notes on the slides and pay attention. One assignment per week and one online quiz every other week. Highly recommend Dr. Halvorson.
One of the best teachers to have early in the morning. She is very energetic and clearly cares about the subject and making sure the class fully understands each topic. She posts notes on OAKs so that students can follow along or look back later. She is a wonderful person overall! 10/10 recommend!!!
She is really nice and understanding. She is very, very knowledgeable about the subject.
I absolutely loved Prof. Halvorson. I had her for an 8am class, but I did not even mind. Her lectures are very interesting, and she puts history in terms that make it easy for college students to understand. She only gives one weekly assignment, which are usually really easy, and two tests, a midterm and final. I can not recommend her enough!
Awesome professor. She very knowledgable about Egypt and everything she teaches. Just pay attention to the lectures and do the readings. She offers so many extra credit opportunities. One assignment a week. A quiz every two weeks. Two exams which are the midterm and final. She gives out a study guide for both exams.
Prof. Halvorson is amazing, she really engages with her students. Her lectures can be a little long at times but just make sure you write down what comes out of her mouth, not just whats on the slides. All her quizzes are open notes online, and she gives you infinite extra credit opportunities. Only tests are midterm/final but there's a study guide
I would recommend taking prof. Halvorson. She's very lecture heavy and can be long and boring at times but she's great. Quizzes are all online and only tests are the midterm/final which were difficult for me but she gives however much extra credit you ask for so very easy to raise your grade. One assignment due a week and they tend to be easy.
I LOVE HER! Prof Halvorson is the sweetest. She is very lecture heavy but I always found them interesting since she spoke with so much passion. Only one assignment a week due of Friday and it was typically very easy. No textbook required but she gives you readings. Definitely take her class if you can.
She is such an amazing teacher and willing to work with you on anything you need. She also offers unlimited amount of extra credit so there is no reason you should not end the class with an A+. Also so funny and real.
Cares about students in her class & wants to be friendly with them. Rarely asks questions, & usually they're easy to answer. Show up early or stay late to chat and she'll love you. 4 assignments & 4 quizzes, plus some readings, a midterm, and a final! Do the assignments/quizzes and readings, write down what she says in lectures, and you'll be fine.
Take notes on lectures and you'll be fine. Gives study guides that outline everything you need to know for the Exams. Willing to work with you for points if needed. Great professor.
I loved her so much! Her lectures were very enjoyable. The only hard test you have are the midterm and final, but she offers extra credit on both so you can easily get a 100. Attendance is mandatory and when you miss points will get marked off your grade, but other than that it was a pretty great class.
There was one homework assignment per week, usually short and easy, but she would always give me a 4/5 with no feedback. Tough grader. There are no tests besides midterm and final, they are all written, but she gives a review sheet. Usually an online, open book 5-question quiz every other week, again would always get a 4/5.
She is not clear with dates or instructions and gives terrible feedback. I appreciated not having a textbook; however, she was only nice to students who would laugh at her jokes. Honestly not a nice person and quite rude.
- homework due every Friday, but relatively easy. will take you 20-30 minutes - only has a midterm and a final which she outlines what you will need to know - she has a great personality and is funny - easy to access outside of class
Very lecture heavy and things can get a bit confusing but she's happy to help.
Prof. Halvorson is amazing. I have some health issues and she has been more than accommodating and understanding compared to some of my other prof's. She is hilarious. Her class isn't hard if you go to class, take notes, and do the weekly assignments. Midterm was online & open note.
She is so much fun! So funny and really cares about what she teaches. She was a tougher grader than I expected so I highly recommend going over your work twice before submitting it. Other than that the course is so easy with one hw assignment a week that takes at most an hour or less. The class is a breeze.
Professor Halvorson was such a cool and caring professor. She is incredibly knowledgable about Egypt and her lectures were always very engaging and interesting. The assignments are really easy, you just have to take notes in class. She took a lot of time explaining topics and making it interesting for the students. I couldn't reccomend her enough.
Her ancient Egypt class was fine, a little boring towards the end of the year but that's not really her fault. She isn't afraid to cancel class which is nice. All tests and the midterm/final are open note which was nice. Still did mid on them though. Ask her about extra credit early in the semester bc she gatekeeps it.
She made this class very interesting and I enjoyed her lectures. Attendance is taken before class starts and does matter. She gives a few reading assignments a week and sometimes videos but the assignments are very straight forward and easy!
One of the best professors I've had. As long as you do your assignments the class is very easy.
She is so passionate about what she teaches and is very understanding. You have to go to class and take notes because most of the midterm and final were on what she talked about in class. Easy weekly assignments
Easy history class. Online quizzes and online midterm and final. A couple of primary source analyses. Very lecture heavy but she is very passionate. Attendance matters but little to no participation is needed.
the goat. she was amazing, online quizzes and exams, final exam online too. easy class ever if you get your assignments done. would 100% take her again. best teacher at cofc. take this class
Professor Halvorson was one of my favorite professors this semester. All quizzes, the midterm, and the final were all online, and she gives a good amount of absences. While the class is lecture heavy she makes it engaging and is hilarious.
Halvorson is a super chill professor, but she's kinda all over the place. Definitely not a hard class at all.
I really liked professor Halvorson. You can tell she really cares about what she teaches. Unfortunately with such a niche topic I got pretty bored in her class. She's kind of all over the place but she's pretty funny. I did not feel like attendance or readings were that important because the assignments were fairly easy.
You can tell that Professor Halvorson really enjoys teaching and is there to actually teach you and not repremand you if you don't understand something. There aren't a lot of actual assignments which can be hard if you don't do well on one because it messes up your grade. She's a very personable professor and is good at making history entertaining.
She gives you no excused absences (even if you are sick meanwhile she canceled class 5 times because she was "sick". It is a fairly easy class but she expects you to read an excessive amount. Her source analysis just write what she wants to hear and if it's not exactly what she would write she'll give you a bad grade.
Halvorson has a very strict attendance policy, however she canceled class at least five times with no reasoning. Grade is determined by few assignments, I also fact checked some stuff taught in class and not all of it was true. Reached out to her multiple times on email and she only answered one question if I had a few.Easy grade, little substance
very quirky and overall a pretty good professor, however you have to make sure you look at dates for things because shes very specific with deadlines. All quizzes and exams online at home, no lockdown just TRIPLE CHECK DEADLINES because if you accidentally miss one she wont let you make it up. Very passionate and funny! Great overall.
Very hard class for a Gen Ed. Everything is on paper and she expects you to know and read a ton.
Very few graded things so difficult to bring grade back up. 2 big projects at the end with both a final test and a 12 page research paper. The teacher is very interesting though.
very nice professor. very enthusiastic about the course. Easy course. graded by a few things. very accessible if you need help. definitely go to office hours, its super useful. Take her!!
