I don't read the book and I make B- on the tests. She also has 8 in class assignments in which she doesn't tell you when they are so you should go to class.
Be careful, shes bites and shes a feminist. Although helpful, she is too busy and tests are hard, especially multiple choice. Don't take her night class or any other class for that matter unless you have to. She is a nice person but muy dificil!

No tests, only in class assignments, projects, and essays. I enjoyed this class very much, but be sure to keep up on readings.
Kristin was a very nice teacher. She gave great examples for all of the concepts. The tests were a bit difficult so it is important that you keep up on all of your readings.
kristins a really energetic young prof. classes go by very fast and the tests aren't hard as long as you study a little and do the readings. should go to class because there are "pop" in-class assignments.
Kristin was the most annoying professor I ever had. Although I got an A in the class, she was NOT open to any new ideas and was over-the-top feminist. As a feminist myself, I found her to be outrageous and closed minded to differing opinions. Avoid her, she acts like she's cooler than she is!
Easy A, as long as you go to class you should be fine. The catch is you have to go to class. if you do then you won't have to really study so it pays off to go to class.
Kristin was a great professor- really stimulated my interest in the class, had really cool practical applications of sociology, and was always available to meet if I had any questions. Keep up with the readings and come to class, but you'll want to do that anyway- I really enjoyed the class.
She really got me interested in the subject and she was really helpful when I came to her office hours. I would take any other class she taught!
Kristin was possibly the best professor I've had my entire college career. She's open-minded and energetic. Her class was amazing and she made every person feel included nd welcome. She's very helpful and deals with the students on a personal level.
kristin really cares about each student and helps them do the best they can in her class. she gives extra credit assignments also. the class is a ton of writing and reading, but most of the reading was relatively interesting. no tests, but a lot of long papers. definately an amazing teacher.
She gives a lot of extra credit, and there's a lot of writing and reading but you can pretty much BS the writing without really reading all the articles. shes really nice and tries to help you as much as she can both in and out of class. She's really passionate and unfortunately really biased.
Very helpful, really wants you to learn the material rather than make things hard for you.
I loved the class. She made things so interesting and really cares about what she teaches. I'd recommend this class to anyone, as long as theyre open to new ideas. Even though i don't necessarily agree with everything in the class, its still nice to know other people's opinions. Awesome teacher :)
Perhaps the best class I took at UF. Kristin was THE best teacher, hands down.
easy class but the teacher is very critical. She can be very negative towards students who don't share her own opinions. For a teacher who tries to promote discussion in class, she can be very rude if you say something she doesn't want to hear.
I love her class! I think the last person who commented is just too sensitive- she asks us to question everything and look at things differently. She is very helpful when you have questions and friendly.
amazing teacher. she really cares about the subject & she's willing to work with you if you need it.
she didn't need to be "co-teaching" this class. the "real" teacher would lecture and then she'd get up and yell at us (she wasn't trying to yell, that's just how it comes out) about some touchy-feely, PC caring/sharing, BS. leave the business to the business profs. I'm sure she's a good teacher on her own but I couldn't handle her
she bores me. easy class and she tried really hard to be stimulating and inspiring but she just came across as obnoxious.
Dr. Joos is very enthusiastic about her class, but there are faults. IDH 3931 focuses on NGOs, grants, and the nuts and bolts of social entrepreneurship. It does not focus too much on actual social issues themselves. Due to this, I found much of the class somewhat boring. This class is useful if you want a career with NPOs; wasn't what I expected.
Kristen is great. I was kind of doubtful about taking women's studies at the beginning, but I ended up really enjoying it and learning a lot. Kristen is always around to help, even if its for something that doesn't have to do with the class. Class is easy if you work hard. Lots of writing though.
Kristin puts way too much busy-work into the class and does not give you very many projects of any importance. Social issues don't make up enough of the curriculum and she is really overbearing once you get to know her. I think that the class is a good idea but is not yet a good class.
I thought that Social Entrepreneurship was an inspirational class in terms of fostering a classroom environment where you learn about social problems and are motivated to apply your skills and knowledge to enact real social change. Kristin's own passion and enthusiasm for progressive issues were evident and contributed to the success of the course.
I learned a great deal about social issues and enjoyed this class. I admit that the work load was heavy but it was worth it.
Kristin has an uncanny ability to motivate her students, I consider it an honor to learn from her. She is also always available if we need anything at anytime. I believe this course represents all that the Honors Program stands for: a cutting edge topic, a top quality professor, and incredible guest speakers. It was a lot of work but well worth it.
Kristin is wonderful, she cares personally about each student and takes an interest in their learning. The course was very interesting and although the workload was tough, each assignment was chosen with a learning objective and she was willing to be flexible. She is a very effective teacher and a wonderful advisor, willing to help with anything!
Dr. Joos uses the overhead for notes, which makes it hard to copy all of them. If you pay attention in class, you don't really have to read the text books in order to do well on tests. The few out of class assignments are time consuming, but easy to bs. Also, 30 hours of comm service are required.
She is onve of those teachers who thinks that because students take her class as an elective, she makes it hard. She is psychotic with the amount of work she expects you to do. If you don't want to work, don't take this class. RUN!
A lot of readings. Class attendence required. A lot of time outside of class necessary.
Very, very good class, but a lot of work. There are plenty of grades, but we have to do 30 hrs. of community service and a report by the end of the semester. There are lots of readings, but don't worry about them until the last test. Just don't leave your 5 projects until the day before. It was a very good class and I would recommend it.
She's a good teacher- makes it interesting and is clearly motivated by the subject. You can't miss class because there are random pop quizzes- i would've had an A had i not missed them!
This is an horrible class. She does not grade fair. I was their every day, took notes, studied and go a B. She expects ou to be a Soc. major. I learned nothing from the class. I would not take this class with her. You will get screwed over. I sucks. Get out!!
Tons of work for a 2000 level class, even though it was in the Honors program. A crazy amount of reading (around 150 pgs/week) + writing(about 70 pgs total all semester) + 30 hrs community service. Joos acts "open minded" but is actually VERY critical of any views that differ from her own. Rediculous workload, but if you do it u get an A.
I really enjoyed this class. She always has some activity or video, which makes the class very interesting. I learned so much, even though I'm an engineering major. I actually looked forward to class. There is a lot of work, including a community service project, but I still got an A. Just do the studyguides and go to class, and you will be fine.
I really like the class, the material seems straightforward, it's difficult in there, but worth it!
This woman is seriously nuts. The first test covered over 10 chapters in 2 different books, and tons of extra reading material from various websites. During class discussions, any opinion that differs slightly from her own she glides over, barely giving an adequate response of her own. On top of that, there is a 25 hour community service project th
extremely large amount of work. i did all the work expected for the class, but still did not do as well as I should have. The tests were very hard and the workload was at times unbearable.
Very hard!!! Not helpful at all. Taught like a graduate class. Never willing to help! TOO MUCH WORK! DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hard class, test not straigtforward. Insane amounts of reading no way to stay caught up, books are all very expensive and you don't even use them because you can't keep up with the reading. I got an A but I have no idea how. The community service was excessive but I did end up finding something I enjoyed.
She's a really nice person and she will help you with everything. It's not a breeze class, you have to do like 30 hours of community service and all the exams are free response and essay, but she tells you everythin you need to know. She's also really helpful outside of class.
If you want to go broke, take her class. I took 2 of her classes at one time (Soc of women and youth) and my books for her classes alone totaled almost $500. Too much reading. Her tests are more based on reading, so u must buy books.I did enjoy her lectures, very interesting. Her class takes a lot of time out of your everyday life. I say dont do it
Idk why everyone is complaining. She is extremely helpful during office hours, and her tests are not hard. All you have to do is READ!!! READ everything you are assigned!! If you are lazy and hate to read, don't bother with this class. This is an easy A if you are willing to log in the reading time.
WAY too much reading for an introductory course (2 textbooks, 1 other book as well as online readings). Was VERY rude to several students in front of the entire class. She does not allow for any perspectives but her own, even if you can provide evidence otherwise (i.e. about details of a social program). Terrible!
The texts were only available at Goering's (no deferment) and were very expensive. Despite her assertion that there is no truth with a capital "T," she makes it clear that her opinion is the only one that matters. I found her condescending and rude. The class, though, was fairly easy.
I loved her- if you go to class and read you'll get an A. Fair grader. Extra Credit. Must buy text books. Visit her in office hours, sit relatively in the front, talk in class. Quirky/interesting/lively. Do the readings. Really wants you to learn, hopes that her class will affect your life in the long run, passionate. Opinionated but share yours 2.
A LOT OF READING!Her tests are based on reading as well as notes in class. She requires a TB, a Reader, another book, plus articles online to read. Info from all of these are fair game for tests. First test I read 400 pages total for...and still made an 88. Ended up with an 89.67 (which she gave me a B+). Get someone else if at all possible!
An interesting, interactive class. Discusses relevant social issues that affect us all and assigns projects that enable us to better understand these issues. Reading long, but worthwhile. She provides thorough study guide outlines which makes exams easy. Energetic and enthusiastic lecturer who shares her passion for sociology. Great class!
Class isn't hard do the assignments & attendance is mandatory because all of the notes are given only in class. A good amount of reading, but goes with lectures & on exams! She is very passionate about the topics & interesting to listen to. She has plenty of office hours, go talk to her! Not alot of HW just reading, studying, & extra credit given!
Overall I enjoyed professor Joos and her class. Class was very interactive; we did in class assignments, grouped up with other students and had several class discussions. Do the reading and come to class and class will a breeze. Profesor joos is fun and funny and very helpful, and as long as you stay on top of the class getting an A isn't hard.
This was a very interesting class and the work was manageable. She taught sociology in a way that made it easy to understand and relevant. You have to be willing to read, but with a lot of classes if you stay on top of your assignments its enjoyable. She wasn't just a lecturer, she was passionate about the subject. I would definitely take another c
Dr. Joos is an enthusiastic instructor. Yes, there is a lot of reading, and you do have to come to class, but if you do, you'll do well. Her tests are very fair. She clearly loves what she does-- and is one of the best teachers I've had. I appreciate that she goes out of her way to get to know students and is always available to answer questions.
This class was horrible. There were far too many texts involved & the course load was ridiculous for an intro level class. Dr.Joos' extremely opinionated & shows obvious disdain for opinions that differ from hers. I found it very hard to get help from her. I had issues with my community service project and she was unwilling to work with me.
You can get an A easily, but go to class and listen. If you pay attention and do the readings you can get an A. She is a fair grader, but you have to contribute as well. Very fun, interactive class. Her volunteering truly gives you an outside experience. I recommend her as a fun/interactive/social/fair grader professor. :)
i found her infuriating, and consequently had to drop her class. if you enjoy being talked to like you're 4 years old, this class may be for you, but i hated it. i also feel that she had unreasonable expectations for how we use time outside of class. i have a real major (unlike most in the class) and cannot spare time for her little pet projects.
She's smart and has her stuff together, terrible social skills and demands a little too much within such a short semester span. I took her in summer and she made us do community service, LARGE projects, read and has no sympathy if you can't fulfill her "giving back to the community" tendency. She expects projects that will "kock her socks off".
Dr. Joos is an awesome instructor who presents social problems in a way that promotes the development of effective solutions.
Uptight woman. Speaks to her students like they are inferior to her and expects too much from her students. She says attendance isn't mandatory yet takes note or makes a comment each time you miss. Smart woman but so hard to work with.
I don't know why so many people hate her, she's not that bad. I honestly didn't read much for the tests, I just went to every class & took notes & paid attention and I got As on them. Don't waste your $40 buying This Book Is Not Required, she never asks questions about it on the exams. The community service sucks, but I've had worse classes.
Very unorganized. I'm curious as to how she became a professor at UF because she can't spell nor tell the difference between Iowa and Idaho on a map of the US. Hard to work with and picky grader. Had to buy 3 books for this class as an elective! Ended up getting an A, but having to deal with her was almost not worth it. Interesting course, though.
my favorite class so far at UF. I thought she was great and really got me interested in sociology which i was previously dreading thanks to others' comments on kristin. the tests aren't bad just do the study guide and skim texts. community service wasn't bad at all either, only 15 hours, if you can't spare that to help others you have some issues.
I took Dr. Joos online section which was very frustrating! She is not that bad as long as you agree with her. I just always wrote what she wanted to hear, and I made an A. It is not hard, I never read any of the book or the other three "required" books! If you attend the elluminate sessions and have common sense you will be fine!
I have taken her twice (also for sociology of women) and enjoyed both classes. Anyone who complains about the amount of work should leave and attend an easier school. THIS IS U.F. FOR HEAVENS SAKE, IT IS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE A WALK IN THE PARK. Study guide 4 test very helpful. If you are ready to be challenged and actually learn something, take her.
Great teacher! Youthful and energetic. Inspires interest in material and links it to everyday situations. Read the book and take great notes in class. The tests are tricky but I got all A's. The service project is a blast if you pick a fun place (like an elementary school) at which you'll volunteer. This class made me double my major. :)
She loves to hear herself being called DR Joos. Any question asked, she says just read. Her test are nothing like her study guide, notes or what she mentions in class. She is the worst professor I ever had. She spends the majority of her time speaking about announcements instead of teaching and then she wonders why her students have so many ??s
It's not REALLLy the teacher, it's the way the class is structured.
Overall, the class helped my tremendously, but Dr.Joos(make sure you call her that or she will correct you!) expects a lot from you. She thinks very highly of herself. The class helped me a lot to help determine my track with my sociology degree, but it was very stressful most of the time due to her requirements for the class.
PROFESSOR Joos is horrible. the online class is impossible. you never get full credit for assignments, and she is horrible at teaching. the attitude is unbelievable. i cannot believe she is allowed to teach! it's really astounding. NOT an easy A. we're half way through with the course and i have no way to get an A. take someone else... trust me.
I took the online version of this class, and it was a complete disaster! She is rude and makes you feel horrible for asking questions. People just end up saying "ok, thanks" and signing off. I wish that UF would have an administrator witness the total disregard she has for her students! Sociology is really interesting, but she made it horrendous.
My only complaint is the new grading scale because it is so hard to get a solid A. a B is easily possible though. It is one of the tougher soc classes out there because you actually have to do some work but it is worth it. Dr. Joos is pretty cool though, I like her a lot. She is really a nice person.
Ms. Joos was very unhelpful and left all the grading to the TA. When you emailed her she never gave you an answer, she would just tell you to check the syllabus. She is unhelpful and not a very nice teacher all around. She doesn't help you out at all and really really didn't make sociology fun. I do not recommend Dr. Joos at all.
Really interesting class but also really challenging. Although the two projects assigned were interesting, they were also very time consuming. If you take this class be sure you will have time to dedicate to it. You need to study a lot for each exam and attend class to do well.
Although the class was very interesting, this class definitely was not easy. She assigned approx. 300 pages of reading per exam. You had no choice but to read them because test questions came from everywhere (book, class notes, articles). She was also rather rude and sarcastic. I do not recommend this professor.
Prof Joos is TERRIBLE! This is a class that should be interesting and not hard at all, but with her it is. I managed to get an A- because of her extra credit (which she assigns alot of it) her tests are hard and you have to read alot. If you can avoid her and take it with someone ek=lse. Btw the way she talks is hilarious! You can laugh at her!
Being that Kristin (Dr. Joos') Social Entrepreneurship was an honors class, I feel she was much more laid back and friendly compared to her description on the rest of the comments on this website! There is definitely a lot of work for this class, but overall it really opens up a lot of opportunities for students! I definitely learned a whole lot.
If you are a sociology major, I highly encourage this class. All the info is really interesting and you get great experience. On the other hand, there are a TON of readings; it's highly discouraging because it's near impossible to finish them. The tests are way detailed. Study everything. Even with all of the XC, I can't get an A. :(
Fascinating material taught by a professor who cares enough to facilitate learning. Great course if you're looking to learn something interesting without breaking your back.
i had her for principles of sociology and social problems. The material would be so much more interesting if she wasn't such an awful teacher. Its so hard to get an A. AND You HAVE to do community service too. I had the option to get her for theories and i ran away as quick as possible. good luck if you have her.
She does assign a ridiculous amount of reading, however, I didn't do any of it and managed to get 100's on all of the tests. In the online section, there are only 3 (5 questions each). Easy and fast. Assignments are pretty easy as well. Not a bad class... her reviews are deceiving. She's VERY prompt with emails, too.
Took this course to learn how to be a social entrepreneur not to interview "community partners" in class. The class project uses students as free labor to unappreciative "community partners", that can honestly care less about your grade. I question how they are chosen as many of them don't even know themselves what they are doing
She gives TOOOOOOO much work for an easy class. She pays too much attention on when things have to be turned in times, then the quality. UNLESS you have a lot of time on your hands, and love doing BS assignments, DO NOT TAKE WITH HER. But she is very nice woman and answers emails very fast.
Professor Joos is awesome! Her class was incredibly interesting and inspiring. It really gave me a way to get involved in the community and I actually have an internship because of a project in her class. She is also very helpful outside of class for so many things. Absolutely recommend her!
I had her for the Social Entrepreneurship class. She has very strict guidelines of how you should complete your work (though they are not often explicit and you will learn them through experience) and LOTS of reading. She's a busy lady but prompt about answering your questions.
One of the most beneficial classes I took as an undergrad, Dr. Joos doesn't just teach the class: she lives it. The perspective it offers is refreshing in comparison to the other business classes I've taken, and the class has very real takeaways, something other classes lack. It should be a biz req. Come with a open outlook, you won't regret it
She talks to her students like we are five and snaps at people really easy. Did not enjoy the class at all and i'm a Soc Major.
Was a pretty easy A class, you get points for each class attended yet attendance isnt mandatory, you get a lot of extra credit options, it consists of quite a bit of easy reading per week, a discussion that is peer evaluated, an assignment, an online meeting, and then throughout the whole class were 3 uncumulative tests, Dr. Joos isn't that bad
Dr. Joos is EXTREMELY opinionated about everything! She forces you to be open minded to her, but she's not open minded to you. She does answer questions and her class is pretty easy, but if you want to get ranted at for 2 and a half hours, I wouldn't recommend her class.
Social Problems and Solutions with Dr. Joos was really unique class in that her teaching style is very interactive. She expects a lot from her students and there is a strong sense of mutual respect in the classroom. Dr. Joos did a great job of conveying the material and challenging the students to step outside of their comfort zones.
This course was a great tool for helping figure out your path within the Sociology degree and post college. Dr. Joos makes sure to make the class about the students and is always prepared. She designed the course in an inspirational and approachable way to encourage students to push themselves, ask serious questions, and plan for the future.
I really enjoyed this class because it was so hands-on and applicable. Dr. Joos pushed us to apply our knowledge to community service projects during the semester, and I thought that was a really useful way to approach the study of Sociology.
I took Dr. Joos's class when I was in high school for a UF summer program called YELS. The course was very inspirational and well taught, and I felt like it was a great introduction into college. It got me thinking about what I value, how to make change, and even how to be a better student.
I was a part of the YELS summer program, and I took Dr. Joos's class for college credit when I was in high school. We learned all about social problems and how to be changemakers and solve these problems. The Social Problems class was very inspirational for me and motivated metaught me how to be a changemaker in my own home.
Dr. Joos and her summer course are the reason I chose UF for my undergraduate career. This is not an easy course, but a worthwhile one if you want to become a better version of yourself and a better member of our global community. The more present and participatory you are in your learning, the more she will give back to you. Recommended 100%
Kristin Joos is passionate about the material that she teaches and that shines through in every lecture. Detailed feedback, current events, taking the lessons out of the classroom, all of the things that you look for in a professor. Joos will blow the lid off of the box you have been thinking in, completely shifting your paradigm for the better.
Dr. Joos was very knowledgeable and made the class interesting. She was always enthusiastic and available to students and very nice and approachable. The best part of the course was that she explains matter well enough to understand (but not without studying)- a great balance.
Dr. Joos has a passion for Sociology and an ability to conquer students' apathy. Her youthfulness contributed to success of the course. She is able to articulate material for a complete understanding of complex topics, which a lot of professors aren't able to do. I had a great experience in Dr. Joos's class. One of the best in the Department.
Dr. Joos was a great professor during the semester I took her course, but she has continued to be a contact of mine, writing letters of recommendation and connecting me with opportunities in the entrepreneurship community. She allows connects her course material to the real world and urges her students to take real action, not just sit at a desk.
I took SYG2010 as a part of a summer curriculum at UF. Dr. Joos was an inspiring teacher that left an impact on me and helped me become more interested in social entrepreneurship and social change. I still keep in touch with Dr. Joos and know that she is always open to talking about change-making and getting involved with the local community.
SYA4930 was an amazing course taken at the end of undergrad. Dr. Joos helped the class explore possibilities of what to do with a major in Sociology. It was really helpful for me to learn how to develop my professional portfolio and receive feedback before entering the real workforce. I really appreciated this course as part of my curriculum.
I felt as though I had to fight for my grade in her class, because her grading was so arbitrary. Some assignments I would get full points, and on others, not so much... The quality of my material was more or less the same, but it didn't really matter.; my grades fluctuated. I overall just had a negative experience in her class. I don't recommend.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. So pointless and so many assignments that have nothing to do with anything. Cant use computer of phone in class, she will call you out.
Most disorganized class I have taken in my entire 4 years as UF student. Do not take.
Literally don't take this class. She was very contradictory with her statements, none of the assignments were relevant, & genuinely just a bore. She'd constantly give feedback like "amazing job!" & then proceed to give you less than a 100%. Thank god this class was only one day per week instead of two. Oh, and don't buy the textbooks. Not worth it.
Dr. Joos is the best professor I have ever had. She truly cares about each and every student and it shows. Dr. Joos is known to go above and beyond for students and treat each individual with empathy. This course changed my life and helped me understand my purpose in life. Dr. Joos passion is contagious and I would recommend taking her class!
Dr. Kristin Joos is the best teacher you will ever have. TAKE HER CLASS, you won't regret it! Dr. Joos changed my life with her passionate teaching. She went above and beyond and was always there to help each student flourish. Her courses are well thought out for maximum effective teaching, and it was fun! I loved this class and it phenomenal!
One of the best classes I have taken in UF. The class is very useful, motivates you to think outside the box, gives you a chance to not just learn, but also apply them in the real world. Wish I could take this class again :)
One of the best classes I have taken in UF. The class motivates you to think outside the box, gives you a chance to not just learn, but also apply them in the real world. Dr. Joos is available for her students all the time, always willing to help them. My favorite part is that she not only wants us to be good scholars, but be good human beings!
If you are interested in social entrepreneurship, you will absolutely love this class. The unique format and challenging yet rewarding assignments allowed me to learn that anyone has the power to change the world and inspired me to make my own difference! Dr. Joos truly cares about her students and is always there to help.
Dr. Joos (now Joys) has been one of the most inspiring teachers I have encountered here at The University of Florida. She gives her students countless opportunities to grow in her classes with many extra credit opportunities. Her love and knowledge of the ins and outs for growing B Corp Businesses and enthusiasm is contagious. I will remember her!
Professor Joos is an amazing teacher! She cares a great deal about her students' success and gives them a lot of opportunities to do well in her class. She has a lot of knowledge regarding social entrepreneurship and makes the topic extremely interesting. If you have the chance to take a course with her, definitely take it!
I took Dr. Joos' class last spring and really learned so much. The assignments are made to challenge you to think and I felt the overall course content was interesting and applicable. I recommend taking any of her classes as they will each give you an amazing insight into the world of Corporate Social Responsibility and Social Entrepreneurship.
Kristin is amazing! Her passion for this class in unparalleled and It was such a pleasure learning from her. She is always willing to help, never be afraid to reach out to her!
Dr. Joos was such a guiding light! She truly cared about her students and her passion for what she taught radiated it was a joy getting to learn from her. Easily one of my favorite professors at UF.
Dr. Kristin Joos has been one of the most impactful and memorable people in my college career. Her classes are well organized and carefully structured. What I liked most was how the learned material challenged my current perspective on multiple fronts. If you want to experience growth in your life, take one of Kristins classes.
This was the most tedious class I have ever taken. It is not hard in complexity, it's just too much busywork. Although she's caring, I think she has an unrealistic expectation of work for the students. Would not recommend this class.
