I wasn't very hopeful after physics 180. The professor I had single handily ruined my love for physics until Kristin. She tells you what to expect on the tests and doesn't try to trick you.
No study guides, practice exams, review materials, study sessions, or advice provided for tests other than,"The test will cover everything that we have covered, so far." Not sure if student lazy or professor... For a class as extensive as this one, knowing formulas won't do. Homework is much more extensive than topic(s) covered in lecture.
Horrible! No study guide! No review! Homework much harder than what we go over in class.
This is single handedly the worst physics professor at unr. She doesn't even give you study guides saying " You need to know it on your own" god I hate phyics at unr. I was kind of hopefull once starting her class she seemed nice and straight forward until it came test time where she screwed everyone over.
Unless your a physics god your pretty much guaranteed to fail her class! Take someone else if you can!!
Just dont.
If this is the only class you are taking then maybe you would be fine, but if your taking a full load and this class expect a D at best. What kind of professor that cares about the success of her students wouldn't give study guides? Makes absolutely no sense..
I will echo the same sentiment as everyone else here. Physics is not an easy subject, and this teacher does nothing to help the process. She will not release exams back to you. No review session, no teaching assistants. There is zero help available for this class. Some math center tutors do 181, but no idea what I'd even ask them! No direction.
This class is good , but the teacher doesn't know to teach us
I had to drop out of this class because it was too demanding with all the other classes I was taking. Hopefully next semester they will offer someone more efficient. She is nice, but clearly she is new to teaching . She reminds me of someone who says "its easy" well yea because you have been doing it forever and I just started. skip this with her.
The material in the lectures does not seem hard, however, when you attempt to do the homeworks you usually want to smash your computer and give up. The homeworks expect you to magically derive odd formulas, and these same homeworks are "your study guide" for the test. Not too helpful. The tests are very hard and require deep knowledge to pass.
Tests have been hard but she drops the lowest and curves. Lectures are all deriving equations; example problems are rare making HW a little tough but there's always chegg. You never know what will be on the tests, no study guides. She wants you to understand the theory. Best choice available. In short: THEORETICAL, challenging, but forgiving.
I have never felt so helpless taking a test until this class. There were no study guides, "review lectures" were no help, half of the homework I just used Chegg because I had no idea what was going on, and she's the only one teaching this class next semester so I get to go through it all over again.
I spent at least 20 hours on this class a week on top of my other 4 classes and it doesn't pay off. She is hands down the worst professor at unr.
I never actually worked out the homework. Im sure you could do well in her class if you really put it effort in practicing problems. Greater curve is given to the 50 minute class than the 75 minute class. I still recommend the 75 minute class, as you have more time on the exam. Her MC is challenging, so also practice theoretical problems. Good luck
This teacher was definitely the most difficult class I had this semester and definitely one of the most difficult teachers I ever had. She's very helpful outside of class and it's worth visiting her during her office hours. She genuinely wants you to understand Physics and will test your knowledge extensively. I put a lot of effort for my grade.
Given how hard she tries to give you absolutely no help or guides for tests you spend more time worrying your going to fail then learn. She horrible take this class at tmcc if you can!!
Horrible!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This class was extremely hard. I had a pretty hard time in 180, but this class was a totally different beast. It seemed as though she gave us no resources to excel. No study guides, doesn't give tests back. It's unfortunate that Lewis is the only 181 professor this fact is pretty unfortunate. Good luck expect to spend at least 25 hours a week!
I've never felt so stupid in my life.
This class was seriously far more difficult than Bennum. Towards the end of the semester, she gave a study guide and suggestions on what to study for. Initially for us though she gave us no resources to succeed. Multiple choice is difficult, so study everything. Free response consisted of 2-3 short answer and one theoretical proof problem.
Really knows her stuff. Teaches the theory not just how to plug and chug. Visit office hours for help on questions.
If you can take this class either during the summer or at tmcc. Lewis is incredible y hard and obviously doesn't keep in mind most of us are taking 4-6 classes. This class took the joy out of physics for me now I dread hearing the word physics.
I really tried my best to succeed in this class, it seemed as though I wasn't getting back what I put in. Tests and homework were extremely difficult, doesn't give study guides or any good direction on what you should study for, and doesn't give tests back. Unfortunately she is the only one that teaches phys181 so be-warned and good luck.
Take someone else if you can! Horrible professor doesn't know how to teach.
Lectures are sometimes useless. She really likes deriving equations rather than doing examples. She does give study guides that are pretty close to the tests, along with a pretty generous grading system. Does take quite the amount of studying, but its physics.
I do not recommend.
no study guides, bad lectures, hard homework
ridiculously hard, boring lectures, impossible tests.
Lewis is a great instructor! She really knows and loves the subject and does a great job presenting it; she teaches the THEORY! That's probably why the bad rating. She doesn't teach how to just mindlessly plug n chug w/ numbers and equations. Equations are derived in class and she shows how things connect. Critical thinking is actually needed here.
She's enthusiastic and some people find her attractive, but that's not enough to make her a good teacher. She sloppily focuses on the theory but then doesn't apply it to examples to make it understandable. This makes the homework and tests unnecessarily difficult. Expect daily clicker points and pre-lecture assignments in addition to the homework.
I got an A in Bennum's 180 and if you didn't like his class you're in for another rough semester. She teaches concepts only with little to no direction on how to actually solve problems u see on tests and HW. Ontop of that if u ask questions you won't get good answers, here is an actual example, Q: "how did you do that?" A: "because math"
There are a lot of crybabies on this page! Did you all think physics would be easy? She is great at explaining concepts, and is happy to help with homework, and example problems in her office, or after class. To all of you whiners: did You go to her office for help? Thats what you do when you dont understand something. Hard class, but I got my A.
Very heavy. She is an alright professor but physics is really hard.
Attend all lectures she'll give you extra credit questions during lectures and they will save you in this class, I got 110% on quizzes and 100% on HW and 60 on all three exams and passed with a B, those exams were tough, she is really nice and caring tho, talk to her and she'll tell you were you are and how hard you should work to get a good grade.
Dr. Lewis is very kind and does her best to make hard concepts easier to understand. Yes, physics is, in general, a very hard subject. She's definitely one of the best teachers I've had in UNR. Yes, the tests are hard but she curves them based on the class' overall score and there aren't any surprises on the test because she hints at what's on them
She will spend half of every class deriving equations which is 100% unnecessary. She almost never does practice problems. Tests are too long for the allotted time. At least 4 home work assignments every week, not including the ones you get in class. Mandatory attendance. You HAVE to sit with an assigned group in a class of 100+ and sign in.
Kristin Lewis is a good lecturer and knows a lot about physics but sometimes her lectures feel like she's talking to room of physicists rather than a classroom of students who barely passed PHYS180. When it comes time to study for exams, review homework problems and know how to do them. If you can do the homework, you'll do fine on the exam.
Lectures were energetic and fantastic! Good balance of slides and example problems. The HW and in-class participation are imperative to passing. Exams were fair for how thick the material is. She has a good knack for explaining less intuitive concepts, which was a good fit for the course material. Be sure to have Calc 2 under your belt for PHYS181!
Group work galore (you dont get to choose your groups). Exams are extremely long and almost nobody finishes in time. Very very little partial credit (actually I don't think there's any at all). However, prof Lewis makes lectures interesting and somewhat understandable. Lectures quickly so make sure you are a fast writer.
Bennum WHO? Lewis is such a fantastic change of pace from PHYS 180. She explains everything in great detail and she gives you the resources (worksheets, fill-in notes) to better understand big concepts. Participation points are given through clicker quizzes (TurningPoint). Exams are sorta tough, but study and practice will do you wonders.
Very great professor. Actually explains the theory behind physics. Extremely recommended.
She was a really great professor. Taught concepts which helped with an understanding of the problems we did. Review sessions great to help with the tests. Great teacher, engaging and caring. Best STEM professor I have had at UNR
Lectures are great but not helpful. Makes the theory behind it all engaging but you are on your own for homework and tests. She doesn't teach you how to work/figure out what is assigned. The tests are long and you wont have NEARLY enough time to finish them. If you struggled in 180 like me you wont pass. You can pray for the curve but it wont help.
She explains the theories but nearly not enough examples. Is always behind with the material. We finish a chapter THE DAY the chapter homework is due. So the physics help center and chegg are your best friends. Is very approachable and understanding. Definitely go to her office hours for help. Better than bennum and bailey, but still bad.
Going into 181 was intimidating because I knew it'd be content-heavy like 180, but Kristin made it easier by having pre-lectures, weekly hw, and worksheets to reinforce the content. Lectures are mostly theory, but she gives you the info you need. It's your job to practice examples to really understand the content. Now you know, so no excuses.
Dr. Lewis is a great instructor. She is very engaging and enthusiastic, which I believe is pivotal when it comes to leading large lectures. Dr. Lewis is very clear in her grading standards, and she provides a lot of materials to help you succeed. She is very organized with her lectures and the structure of the course and is always willing to help.
Dr. Lewis is an outstanding prof. She keeps everybody engaged and learning and is super funny. One of the best I've ever had. The reason she gets a bad rap is because the class is just SUPER hard. I studied for 30 hours for an exam and got a 60% with the curve. Super hard to prepare for and learn unless you naturally are just good at physics.
Dr. Lewis is overall a pretty good teacher, but not the best. Lectures are very theory heavy with limited examples, which makes homework and exams more difficult. However, she does offer plenty of office hours to help anyone that needs it. Overall, I had a decent experience for a physics class.
Good teacher, difficult material. The other reviewers are complainers.
Kristin makes learning physics the most fun it possibly could be. She is human and realizes that the students she teaches are too so she doesn't expect or want perfection. Even during the quarantine semester, she was extremely nice and reasonable involving any and all of the hiccups that came along with the jarring transition to online lectures.
This is coming from the F20 sem. Kristin's way of doing class remotely is weird, to say the least. Normally, you would have 3 classes a week. But this sem, you have only one lecture and you're required to attend. I had my first midterm and bombed it. The thing is, I do think she has potential as a teacher. But her organization in F20 is confusing
A difficult class but Professor Lewis was overall a good professor
I'll admit I wasn't much of a fan of her at the beginning of the semester. But she really tried to make as much of an effort to help students understand the material, even if things were awkward this semester. I wasnt too fond of the tests, being quite difficult, but with a little bit of practice, I improved over time (there were 8 this semester)
Great class! Doctor Lewis is fun, laid back, and helpful when you have questions. The exams are tough because of the time limit, so make sure to practice before the exam. Other than that the in class problems, lecture questions, and homework aren't too bad, but they're also not worth a ton of points. Lowest test and homework grade is dropped.
She should be demoted to being a tutor. The flipped Lectures are just regurgitating the textbook and she almost never works through problems. Good for theory but how am I supposed to know how to problem solve.
Awful format to teach others. You basically teach yourself the material and come to class to do the homework where she "helps" solve the problems One of the worst teachers i've ever had. UNR physics department is a joke.
The worst class i have ever taken. The class is very fast pace, she crams 6 exams into the semester and you do not get a break in between new material and attempting to study for the exam. She only goes over theory based problems which leaves everyone lost in the homework when you have to do real problems. Overall, I hate every second of this class
Very heavy workload. You will receive on average 7-9 assignments every week in the form of quizzes and homework assignments. The class moves very quickly. Overall it was hard to keep up while taking other classes.
She has no idea how to teach a class. Every exam is rushed where you have assignments that cover that exams material due more than a week after you have to take the exam. How am i supposed to do well on the exam when you assign the homework after the exam, I get no practice in. Lots of homework, quizzes and the exams are hard. I hated this class.
I will not lie, the workload is a lot, especially because of the 7 tests she gives. The assignments do help. Physics is tough. However, she is very nice in that you can ask for extensions on things w/o getting docked points, she is there to help you if you ask her, and we get more than one attempt on tests. She is also so enthusiastic during class
Lots of work for this class, youll probably get around 10-15 assignments every week for this class and youll take the exam before any of it is due. This class is made to get people to second guess their choice in college. The professor isnt very good and this class is hard when it doesnt need to be. You do not get second chances at exams!
Kristin, the worst teacher I have ever had in my life. First day of class she told us that she will not be teaching. We would be working in groups. Reading a script word for word and pointing at definitions in a video isn't teaching. SHE DOES NOT TAKE ANY WORK FOR TESTS. If you make a simple mistake, you get the entire problem wrong. Run don't walk
Professor Lewis doesn't put much of an effort teaching this class. She has recorded videos where she reads off powerpoints of simple definitions. 10-15 assignments per week will have you working on this class far more than the rest of your classes. 7 Exams which don't mirror the study guide one bit. Class time is used to work on homework as a group
Dr. Lewis had a "flipped class": lectures outside of class and homework inside. This worked for me in some cases but not others which is why she has a 4 and not a 5. Be ready to take a lot of time to do the lectures and the homework! Do not get behind and make sure that you asks questions if you need. She was always nice when I asked her quetions.
Dr. Lewis is a good professor. Physics is hard and I think many students reflect that frustration back onto the professor. Dr. Lewis does teach a flipped learning classroom which I admit is a little difficult and I would prefer in-class lectures, but there's lots of time in class for questions and Dr. Lewis is super approachable. Don't get behind.
Dr. Lewis is incredibly good at teaching; lectures are very to-the-point and outline everything you need to know. Her grading scale is very lenient (almost half the points are from homework and participation) and she curves the harder exams. Wonderful professor and your best option for 181.
Flipped schedule, do work during lecture and look at lecture videos outside of class. There are attendance codes. Close does not feel worth attending if you do not have a good group behind you. Lots of space to makeup a bad grade and there is good leniency. 7 exams total worth 60% of grade. Would feel better if class attendance had more value in it
Physics is tough! I think a lot of students take that out on the professor. Dr. Lewis is a great professor and really cares. It is a lot of work (~3 assignments + 1 problem set per week, and test almost every other week) but Lewis makes it as manageable as possible. Reversed class: lecture videos at home, working on problems during class.
Online "lectures" instead of legitimate lectures (with mandatory attendance to the lecture classes where you only do hw), had a total of 10 tests through the semester including 3 in the last 2 weeks of the semester. The structure, materials and schedule, make it impossible to focus on other classes without falling behind.
she is actually great but the material is hard. she does everything she can to help you pass.
She will devote class time to getting homework done, and answering questions. Since lectures are only 50 minutes long, anyone who has taken physics knows that this is way too short of a lecture time. However, I enjoy classes being devoted to answering questions on HW. However, this requires a lot of work outside of class, but it wasn't unenjoyable.
One of the most helpful and caring professors at this university. And although her class is a ton of work with so many tests and assignments, it is so rewarding. Her online lectures are straightforward, as there's no chance of her rambling on like many others do. Highly recommend, even if physics isn't your strongest subject.
Having mandatory attendance for a class where you to do homework is BS. I feel like I learned nothing from her and did all the learning my self. SOOO many tests, but they are not too difficult (very similar to the homework). Dr. Lewis is a nice enough person but sucks as a professor. Would not recommend.
Look, I started the semester with a great view of the flipped classroom concept, but it has failed. By flipping the classroom, the onus of teaching is flipped onto the peers, and if peers could teach, we wouldn't go to college. All students are on different pages because of virtual lectures. The kicker? 4 tests in two weeks to finish the semester.
Had 7 total exams over the semester consisting of 5 midterms (all taken outside of class) and 2 finals (one being multi day). Classroom is flipped, meaning lectures are watched outside of class, and class time is used for homework help, yet attendance is still taken. Including lectures, quizzes, and exams, outside work can take 10+ hours per week.
Kristin's class is not for everyone. Lectures are all online, with class time reserved for doing homework. Lots of exams (five throughout the semester, two finals), one is dropped, and also lots of homework due each week. Exams have multiple attempts and some extra credit. Make sure to understand the homework, and you'll do fine in the class.
Very busy class. She teaches great in the online lectures and the in-person lectures are nice for review. This is a very self-paced class and it worked very well for me. She is very leniant on all deadlines. Tests are on webcampus and self-scheduled. Lots of homework but if you do it all you will very likely get an A because of the practice you get.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU DONT HAVE TOO!! Does not teach calls her classroom a flipped classroom which means you watch lectures at home then do homework in class. Problem is she won't help you if you don't set up the problem her way. Requires attendance because she knows that no one will show up after the first couple weeks.
Kristin Lewis is barely a professor. We do our own learning via videos she recorded long ago. Her homework and exams are on Webassign (which is the ONLY good thing, as you get three chances per answer on tests). There's no reason to go to class, which is why her attendance is mandatory. I don't know how she's allowed to run class this way. AVOID!
350 characters isn't enough. She has FIVE exams, ~6 homeworks a week, sometimes 4 in a day. Learning is done via videos, but somehow attendance is mandatory. Attendance randomly taken (she likes to wait for Fridays before breaks to spite her students). Practice exams are maybe 20% similar to actual exams. Only physics 2 teacher, so I was screwed.
Avoid this class if you can. There are 5 exams 2 group finals and one individual final. There is so much homework its not even funny. This class was way more work than my upper div cs classes which says something. Class is a joke but attendance is mandatory. AVOID
Dr. Lewis isn't that bad. I don't agree with the flipped system where we watch a video lecture outside of class and then do homework in class but it's not a detriment. There's a lot of homework but you generally have a while to get it done. The exams suck and there are five of them but if you can do the homework, you can do the exams.
Lectures and their quizzes are to be completed outside of class yet attendance is mandatory. A new homework is assigned at least once per lecture. Seven tests (one is dropped) that are to be taken outside of class on your own time. Dr. Lewis is kind and knowledgable, even offering extra credit, but the setup of this class is overbearing.
I'm Phys 180, there's no option for it right now on RMP though. Make sure you do your reviews outside of class, considering she'll straight up skip reviews of subjects because "this is boring so I'm going to skip this." She heavily follows the notes and when she's not using the notes it's problem sets.
I am a typically a straight A student but struggled in this class. I was spending 25 hours a week on the lecture and lab combined and still getting low test scores. There's homework almost every night with difficult questions that can take hours. Her lectures are useless but attendance is required. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
Never goes over stuff that are on the exams.
She barely/not does not over test material. About 1-2 questions from practice test are even related to questions on the actual test. Plus when the class average for exams is consistently 40-50%, I think there is a problem.
Her notes consist of ONLY equations without any examples to really reinforce the student's understanding of every equation. It seems like every lecture given we are thrown 5 or more new equations and we only practice one of them. On top of that the practice exams are completely unrelated to what's on the actual exam. Had to study on my own.
Here's how I got an A as someone who's never taken physics: ALWAYS stay ahead. Study the book & take notes on it BEFORE lecture. Don't rely only on her notes. And go to office hrs often! This class is hard and a heavy workload no matter who you take it with, so beware. Exam 1 was rough, but it gets better if you keep practicing. I liked her a lot.
Be prepared to teach yourself pretty much everything. Her lectures only go over the equations she will give you on the exams, but not how to use them. Also her study guides aren't similar to the exams, there is an exam every 2-3 weeks and you have take them on your own time, they're not in class. Only reason I gave 2 stars is because she's nice.
My advice... stay ahead!!! Especially when nearing exams. Like when the class finishes a chapter, you want to be at least one chapter ahead. This gives you extra time in to digest the material. Physics is a tough class and it's VERY fast-paced. Covers 16-17 chapters in one semester, where most other classes typically cover 6 or 7. Seek help early.
Dr. Lewis does a very good job at making you not like physics.
I am beyond appalled at Lewis and her incompetent way of teaching. I have never met a professor so bad at teaching that I considered taking this class at UNLV during the summer. I got a 43% on the first exam and then dropped the class. Has an "flipped classroom" (watch lecs at home, do hw in class). Does not teach well at all, exams are hard.
One word: AVOID. I drove twice the speed limit every day hoping to hit a tree. Sweet women, but Kristin drops the ball in tests. The tests are so awful that the average was a 50%. Her reverse classroom nonsense is even worse, and I spent about 3 hours each day on this class. I am a straight-A student, ended up Auditing class.
I have never had such a bad professor in my two years of being a student at the UNR. I am an engineering student and am completely used to taking very challenging courses. However, Kristen Lewis has made it unbelievably impossible to pass this class. She never goes over test materials and has no regard for her students. AVOID.
I put more work into this class than I did in my 300/400s. She's a great person outside of class and during office hours. Overcomplicated extra credit, study guides for exams had one problem that was helpful. Claims she doesn't want students memorizing but rather understanding. I had trouble doing either. Youtube the material instead.
Don't let Lewis fool you. This woman is the devil's advocate. She is a sweet lady outside of class and with my ENGR curriculum I was forced to take this class. But, this class is so insanely hard that I am getting my first C in her class. Something about her just doesn't sit right. She refuses to teach WELL. Exams are unbelievably hard.
She moves way too fast. When I went to my tutor for help I understood everything, which means that this subject is only hard because of the teacher. Her tests are completely different, much much harder, and have absolutely nothing to do with the study guide. If you want to do decent in this class you have to treat it like a full time job.
Dr. Lewis is an amazing professor, and while her class was most definitely challenging I learned a lot in it. Her lectures helped me greatly understand the concepts, and it wasn't too hard to figure out the homework. There were a lot of stressful exams, but the lowest scored one is dropped. I would definitely take a class taught by her again.
Professor Lewis did well at covering a lot of hard content in a relatively short amount of time. But the explanations provided in class left a lot of questions unanswered. You will be very reliant on the barely usable book examples, and anything online. The exams were difficult at times, but the drop policy helps. Find a friend to work with for hw.
Dr. Lewis expects all students to read each chapter before lectures. The exams are brutal and study guides are not much help. Too much self-study. The class format is not my favorite but she is accommodating (if you communicate), willing to meet after class, and drops the lowest exam. There are also a bunch of other opportunities for extra credit.
This professor doesn't help much. It feels like a million midterms. DOES NOT CURVE.
Dr. Lewis goes pretty fast during lectures. She focuses on the formula and theories so much that doing hw/examples/study guide doesn't help much with the exams. It is definitely a challenging course but she do have accommodation to boost grades like having group exams and dropping one exam grade(there about 8 total exams including the final).
This was relatively the hardest class I've taken in my college career but well worth it. I just finished with dynamics and fluid dynamics this summer and the concepts I learned in 180 helped a lot. If you're an engineering student, learn the theory well and go to office hours as needed because it really pays off down the road to know this material.
She was great in lectures, but she didn't give near enough examples in class which made the homework hard. I essentially taught myself through YouTube videos and got help from friends that took her before. If you aren't naturally good at physics get ready to work your butt off.
She rarely gives examples in class; when she does, they are usually separate from the homework questions, making doing her homework take hours and using YouTube to find similar questions.
Horrible physics professor. She is so nice and an amazing person, but she shouldn't be teaching a beginner physics course. If you have taken physics in high school you should be okay, but if this is your first physics class be ready to suffer.
Supper nice lady, awful at teaching however. It feels like she speed runs her own lectures and runs through concepts incredibly fast. All exams are on your own time. Lots of homework outside of the class. You have to lock in day one in order to stay on track with the way she teaches.
Very nice professor however the class was the hardest class I've taken as an engineering student. She rushes through lectures without explaining concepts and expects students to finish problems by just "knowing" what to do. Exams are very difficult and the homework load is the worst I've ever had. Goodluck.
Very test heavy class with very poor test structure. Lectures rarely include any sort of examples rather she only covers concepts. Study guides cover different concepts then what are on the exam which in turn makes them more confusing. Absolutely no curving even though the class averages around 40-50 percent on exams.
This teacher is not a good teacher for such a fundamentally important class of anyone in engineering or science. She rushes through lectures without explaining thoroughly and the Labs that accompany this class are horrible and disorganized at best. The grading is barely curved and the homework is ridiculous and unrelated to the midterms.
Bad teacher.
Lewis is a terrible teacher. She absolutely races through content so fast that taking notes is a futile endeavor. But she has days entirely dedicated to doing one of the 4 large assignments per week. She also has tests in the testing center and they are held on days that she will deduct points for not being in lecture. It's a lose-lose.
Overall, the class was fine, the lectures weren't anything special, but not bad. Show up to lectures and pay attention and you'll pass. However, every semester Kristin Lewis will ruin your life with 3-4 tests in the span of week, the week before finals. She drops tests, helps with homework and problem sets, but 7 tests is just unnecessary.
races through content so fast that taking notes is a race. 4 large assignments per week. tests in the testing center and they are held on days that she will deduct points for not being in lecture. It's a lose-lose. went to the physics center and they barley understood her notes...
I really enjoyed her PHYS 180 class. She had us fill out skeleton notes during lecture which I found to be very helpful in understanding what was important and helped with studying for exams. She also drops the lowest grade exam at the end which is really cool. She's pretty nice, and easy to reach out to if you have questions.
The class is certainly difficult, but Prof Lewis does an amazing job giving engaging lectures and preparing helpful notes that are partially filled out already. Her rating is only low because many freshman take this class and have no conception of how bad things can get lol
She's very friendly and wants nothing more than to help you. Super accommodating and understanding and honestly she is the standard teachers should strive for when it comes to aiding students. However the class is extremely content heavy and fast-paced so you will need much more than the notes and lectures to pass her class, lowest test is dropped
The absolute WORST professor I have ever had. You will not learn in lecture as she only teaches theory but attendance is mandatory. 7 exams in the semester, 4 of which were in the last 2 weeks of class, all midterms in testing center outside of class time, ALWAYS takes attendance when students are scheduled testing. Gives no partial credit or curve
her way of teaching doesnt work with most of the students. very dense and fast paced, not her fault, but her notes didn't help. lacked examples and step by step approach for problems so no one knew how to do it. for test, no work is graded so no partial credit, you either get it or don't and there's no feedback for exams so its overall very hard.
Kristin is a nice professor, never condescending. If you have a question in class, she will answer it. However, especially as a person who has never taken a physics class before, her way of teaching makes it difficult to fully understand concepts. This was the hardest class I've ever taken, but she isn't terrible. Also, tests occur outside class.
Yea just give up
Professor Lewis covers a lot of challenging content, but her lectures can fall short in fully explaining the material. The textbook and online resources are essential for doing well. unstuck AI and study groups were key for acing the exams.
Good luck taking this course. The physics center in the psac saved me because the homework is incredibly difficult. In her lectures she spends most the time discussing theory and will skip over practice problem yet expects you to know how to do problems entirely on your own. Exams were heavily weighted.
Dr Lewis is not a bad professor but she has poor organization and she doesn't really helps us to practice. She would go over theory and not much practice during her lecture. She isn't really organized in her office hours and would let a bunch of students in her office rather than just letting around maximum 3. I just wish she helped us practice.
Horrible. Run.
She neglects to do any kind of review or practice in class, expects students to conceptualize difficult concepts based on her chicken scratch notes templates, & assigns sob-worthy amounts of homework every week. She complicates simple concepts and only lectures on theory with little to no application. She holds 4 exams in the last 4 weeks of class…
I took 180 years ago and did fine. It was hard, but her class really helped change the way I think, and I made a lot of friends through attending her lecture and forming study groups. Honestly, great memories. Unfortunately, UNR pushes students into rigorous classes without sufficient background, hence why there are many negative reviews.
Overall, Prof. Lewis lacks a lot. She will give you an outline of the notes of the chapter, and you fill them in as you go. Her lectures mostly entail her telling you about the theory of the subject with little to no examples. The homework is also extremely difficult, and the exams are very hard. Study when you can
Test are usually 8-7 questions and you only get 3 try's to answer, and you only get 1 try if it's a multiple choice question. There was a total of 6 exams in the semester which gives you some room for recovery, her only good quality is being helpful suiting office hours.I would recommend taking this class at a different school!
if you can take the tests on the last possible day so you can learn what to study from other students the practice she gives barley applies to the exams if at all.
I think a lot of people are a bit dramatic about how bad she really is. Yeah you will have to work for your grade, but she's not a bad professor. Very fair grader. You have like 6 exams (including final exam), and she drops your lowest test score. She provides practice exams which I found to be very helpful. As long as you try, you'll be fine.
Yeah everyone tells you this class is horrible, but physics is hard. She's not a bad professor. Super fair grader. There are like 6 exams (includes final exam), and she drops your lowest one. The lectures are a bit mid, but if try and actually do the homework you can learn and pass. Try and you'll be just fine.
If you do not have a physics background this class is extremely challenging. Overall the math center and friend groups were the main reason I passed. Tests were super difficult and honestly take your tests the last days to get insight as to how to prepare for exams.
honestly. don't let people freak you out about this class. if you do the reading, study in groups, and learn the homework. you will pass. Her lectures are terrible, but IMO her class is easier to pass than matt baileys (she drops an exam + her test 4 and group final are gimmes) just lock in instead of freaking out like me.
Very difficult class. Expect to be teaching yourself about 3/4 of the time. The problems shown in class are not typically on the homework, which aren't on the formative assessments, which aren't on the tests. Overlap is limited to nonexistent. Expect to be solving for entirely different situations and variables than you are taught.
Genuinely the worst class I've ever taken. Mandatory attendance, 24 HWs, 10 problem sets, and 7 exams. The class exam average is 45%, no curve. Reading the chapters doesn't help, as it's all about the theory she already teaches in class. Very little examples or how to apply each formula. You will have to teach yourself.
