Cannot teach at all, does not explain material. Quizzes are impossible-she words them really bad. Articles are long and boring. Longest 75 minutes ever.
Do not take Kristin Schaupp. Worst class I've ever taken at UWEC. Worst professor I've had.
Worst professor in the department. I had a solid background in philosophy, and I was not a freshman when I took her class. She makes easy material confusing, and I really don't think I learned anything from a class that had a lot of potential and interested me a lot. I wish they hadn't hired her.
very easy, but can easily be boring. may be thought provoking.
Dr. Schaupp is an interesting lady. Her course is manageable. There are readings that have to be read to do well on the quizzes. There are no tests and no extensive papers to write - a few sentences here and there You work with one group the whole time and in the end you turn in a group project. good 100 level course!
If you go to her office with questions or for help she will only talk over you, she doesn't listen. She assumes way too much and doesn't relate to her students. I wasn't a freshman and this wans't a GE and she still sucked.
Relatively easy class. Very helpful professor. Expect a lot of reading and a quiz once a week. Study hard for the quizzes. In-class discussions don't do anything for your grade. I just slept most of the time. The final was just questions copied word for word from the quizzes, so make sure you get the right answers for them in class and study them.
Very boring class. Lots of reading. Schaupp isn't helpful at all outside of class. Don't expect any help from her with technical questions about the poster project or D2L. She will just tell you to call the help desk and make you feel like an idiot
I don't see how anyone could have issues with Dr. Schaupp. She's very nice and willing to help if you ask. Her class is very thought provoking and she did an excellent job at explaining complex material.
Very Boring Professor!!! Quizzes were very hard and in class discussions weren't any help!! I wouldn't recommend this class or professor!
Horrible teaching, even listening in class does not help with the quizzes. I would never take a class with her again.
Do not take PHIL 120 with Schaupp. This is the most ridiculous class ever. I was so bored I didnt know what to do. Unless you know philosophy stuff you will have no idea what is going on. She knows her stuff but shouldnt be teaching. She cant handle disruptions or answer questions appropriatley.
I'm not sure why someone would even attend class. It really makes no difference in your grade. Lectures are pointless and quizzes are hit or miss. If you can't handle philosophical language, this course will be tough.
I signed up for this class because I thought we'd be debating ethical issues. But all we did was read boring articles and talk about what the author thinks philosophically...and the lectures in class were mainly her calling on people who had no idea what was going on. Bottom line: horrid class. horrid prof. don't take it
Im not sure what all the fuss is about. If you expect to take philosophy without having to read and discuss articles they I'm sure you will be disapointed, but typically this is what you do in a philosophy class
She spends most class periods going over the material assigned in the last class period. If you don't understand what you read, just come to class and by the end of discussion, you should have a very good idea of what's going on in the article.
First off, Expect to READ and DISCUSS (that is to be expected in ANY Philosophy class). Schaupp is very willing to help you understand the material just ask her!
I did not like this teacher at all. She is the worst teacher that I have taken at this university. She was not helpful at all and her grading system is extremly stupid. She bases half of your grade on a group project that you have no control over so if your group does not understand what is going on then you are sure to fail the class. TERRIBLE
I was excited to take this class until I got to the class and listened to this Prof. If you are the kind of person who likes to read philosophical articles an hour a day and sit through boring lectures that you will always run too long, then take this class. I have never hated a teacher until now.
the main difficulty was how much of a tyrant she was for grading. the articles were long,no matter how many discussions u have quiz grades will be less than mediocre, the big project she completely rips apart, and she continues to speak after her time class time is finished, making most late for their next one.
the quizzes are hard, especially if you don't thouroughly read every time. no tests except the final, and attendance is required except for 3 absences. I wouldn't recommend her.
I didn't really enjoy the class at all--she talks for 50 minutes straight and makes you discuss topics with groups. Unless you love debating or discussing philosophical articles, I wouldn't recommend this class. She's a smart professor and knows her stuff, but she needs to figure out a better way to translate that so students understand.
Terrible class! If you are interested in taking a philosophy class for the first time do not take it with this professor. I had an interest in philosophy but now it is gone forever! BYE BYE! Teacher is not clear at all, quizes are worded weird and it was just all around a bad experience! Good luck with registration!
This class was a complete joke. you dont discuss actual issues, you watch her pretend to teach. Be prepared to watch what looks like a woodland creature attempt to make a class of 80 talk about huck finn for 2 weeks....I almost liked one class...once..but then I woke up from my dream
doesn't seem like a 100 level course. very boring and vague. participate once in a while to make up for the quizzes you will be doing poor on. rediculous grader on final projet. will help if asked. just get the right answers from the quizzes post facto and study them for the final to get a passing grade.
If you respect yourself at all, don't take this class. It's boring. It's tedious. You talk about Huck Finn for 3 weeks. Philosophy should be heated and controversial but Schaupp is so drab and likes to repeat herself so much it's very blah. Quizzes are hit or miss and you do everything for the entire semester in groups. Easy. Don't take this prof.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! You will regret it every day for the entire semester if you do. Schaupp is boring to listen to, angry when you talk to her, and will never give you above a C. The only way you will get an A on your group project or your paper is if you are Dr. Schaupp herself. Do not think you are the exception to this rule. DON'T TAKE!!!!!!
I don't know why everyone thinks that Schaupp is bad. I persoanally didn't think the class was too bad. If you go to class and listen it's interesting and the group poster project is fun. Not a hard class unless you make it hard for yourself. She is very helpful if you ask questions and is always available for help.
I'm not sure why there are so many complaints for the course and the prof. I thought she was fine, and I thought the course was educational. My complaint is she does have a certain speech about her that drons on and on and on, and you're never sure what to take notes on. But it's not horrible. Perhaps I've just had worse...
Completely Average teacher. Lectures are not horrible, essay tests but she gives you the questions in advance so you can study off of them. Lots of discussion. Completely average class.
I spent the entire semester wondering why in the world I took this course. Literally, every single question that is asked is answered with a nearly identical 5-minute clustered mess of language that means absolutely nothing. Not helpful. Not interesting. Not educational. I still have nightmares about this course.
Prior to taking this class I didn't know what to expect. Be prepared for reading a lot and working through discussions. The group project was hard at times but that was because my group was USELESS. this does not matter I still had to get the project done. I was confused at times. Just be prepared for work.
Expect to read a ton. The quizzes are hit or miss..she makes most of the questions SO difficult to understand, and you have to read them over several times to try to figure out what they're really asking. I really regret taking this class.
Definitely regret taking this class! Only thing I learned was that I am never taking another Phil class again! Even if you do the readings, it's almost impossible to get above a B on the quizzes. Lectures were not interesting...they put you to sleep. If you have a choice, don't take this class.
I had the same problem most had. Her notes are unclear and she writes everything on the board. Discussions are extremely hard to follow and seem more like a jumbled mess of information. From looking at previous comments, she looks to be a decent professor for the upper level classes, but NOT for the lower level classes.
Extremely tough teacher. If you ask what the answer is to a multiple choice question, you get a ten minute discussion, and you still don't know the answer. Avoid if possible. She is helpful though.
Extremely tough teacher. She has a way of talking that's very confusing. Definitely not straightforward. Avoid if you can.
Worst professor of college so far. Goes on random tangents all of class and makes little to no sense what so ever. AVOID HER
This can be an okay class... But not taught by this professor. You can never get a clear answer for anything. Her quizzes are poorly worded and other sections taught by different professors are learning completely different things than us. We talked about something for a month that other sections covered in two classes. AVOID SCHAUPP
Very Hard! Wording of the questions on quiz are illusionary in their context!
I've always done well in classes... not in this one. She is very hard to understand, and if you ask a question, you end up more confused. The test questions are horribly worded. If you care for your GPA, avoid.
Philosophy is obviously going to be difficult but honestly, it should not be THAT hard. This professor is very smart and understands the material but has an incredibly difficult time explaining it. If you understood the article before class, you will leave more confused than when you came. DO NOT take this class with her if you want to do well.
She's like a bad NPR guest: intelligent, but can't relate to an audience. Her lectures reflect a knowledge in the material, but an utter inability to explain it. Very difficult to stay awake during lectures. While I'm interested in Philosophy, this class is unhelpful, confusing, and the cause of many headaches.
This is a very hard class. There were approximately 80 other students in my class, making it almost impossible to as for help. The discussions are very confusing, but she does split the class into groups which is nice in order to clarify discussions with others. i would not recommend taking this class.
She is a bad teacher, and you leave the class not learning anything, but the class is not hard. The quizes are a little challenging, but you also get to take the same quiz with your group, which really boosts your grade. The end of the year group project was very easy! You MUST read the articles to do well on quizes, but no other studying is needed
This professor is terrible. She cannot explain anything. If you ask a question, she goes on a fifteen minute rant and your question still isn't answered. This is my absolute hardest class. I dread going to this class every week. YOU'VE BEEN WARNED.
DO. NOT. TAKE. THIS. CLASS. Kristin is very demeaning and doesn't explain anything clearly. I have literally left this class learning nothing and wasting my time in the process. She is annoying to listen to and by all means to do NOT take anything she teaches.
Nice teacher philosophy is a difficult subject due to the abstract thinking that it requires some students can't think that way and blame professor when they dont understand However she doesnt clarify by explaining because she does not explain in a way that a student can understand Id take again because i loved my group shout out to ES MK LW
She is the worst teacher you will ever have by far. She makes inconsistent arguments all class long then will scold you like a young child for not understanding her arguments.
Overall a good class experience. Uses the text book for everything! Must do the full readings (best if before class). Exams were essay and pretty tough, but if you spend the time to study it's fine. Not always clear, but really helpful if you go in for office hours. Would recommend this teacher to others.
She is not clear with her arguments at all. She flips back and forth from agreeing to disagreeing. She rambles on about one subject for the whole class period, so she bores you. I was interested in learning but honestly walk out of the classroom with no new knowledge of anything. The only thing that saved me in the class was the group quizzes.
She speaks around in circles, has a condescending attitude towards all students when they question or comment, does not answer questions, and flips her definitions every 5 minutes. It's impossible to keep up with her and she does not post/share the assignments anywhere except for the white board at the beginning of class. 10/10 would not recommend.
DO NOT TAKE ANY CLASS WITH HER! This is your warning. If I could have rated with 0s I would have but it is not an option. Her lectures are very long and very boring. She says nothing helpful or useful that pertains to the class. She is also very rude whenever you have to ask a question because she expects you to just know it. I should have dropped.
If you are interested in Philosophy, take this class. Prof Schaupp is NOT as bad as these comments make her seem. We spend the entirety of class dissecting the readings so any and all confusions are cleared up. She loves to help, you just need to ask. She also has a great sense of humor. Class is challenging & time-consuming but worthwhile.
She is a fine person, just not a great teacher. She goes on and on about one topic and that topic might not even be on the quiz. She does not give you a clear idea of what to know for quizzes. Her lectures are boring and the readings are essential for being successful. The group project is a pain especially because you can't pick groups.
There are many individual quizzes, followed by group quizzes. Very opinionated questions but marks them wrong still. Seemed forceful with her beliefs. The class held one large required argument and during class, talked and read about things that will upset you. Very unproductive lectures and groups you up to sit in groups all semester. Make friends
Do not take this class with her. Terrible professor. She does not answer questions directly nor does she help you at all even if you go in on your own time to ask questions. She makes all quizzes very difficult and nothing is clear.
Not helpful, just gets angry when people ask questions. Steps around questions as well. Usually holds everyone after class. Rarely makes sense.
I have taken two classes with Prof. Schaupp. The first semester I didn't really take notes. She conducts class through the construction of thought maps (based of participation) When it came to the essay test study guides I realized not taking notes was a mistake. This semester I took more notes and found her essay exams to be a breeze. Great class!
I found Dr. Schaupp to be incredibly unhelpful and often rude. I was once asked to stop by her office to discuss a paper. Her notes were not only unclear, but were also hurtful and discouraging. While asking for clarity and trying to explain my paper, she accused me of trying to begin an argument. In class, she failed to lead the class effectively.
She doesn't have a teaching style that most students can learn well from.
I have taken three classes With Kristin, and she is an excellent professor. She will certainly challenge you, and class lectures can be frustrating at times because of the in-depth nature of the discussions, but you will learn. I have never retained knowledge from any class like I do from her classes. Easy exams if you go to class and take notes.
Took the class despite being told how difficult the professor was, thinking I would give it a chance and maybe I would like the class. Not only is the class difficult (don't get me wrong, challenges are always nice) but the prof is extremely rude, unclear, disrespectful to students, and unwilling to answer/explain anything. Grading system is broken
She will inspire you to want to know more about philosophy
The in class lectures are very boring and she is not engaged with the class at all. The readings weren't too bad but the test were challenging unless you know the week's material and the opinion of that writer.
She's rude and doesn't make much sense. She's the teacher who smiles while she's yelling at you. Her quizzes are tricky, but the group aspect is nice. She said the phrase "in terms of" over 1,300 times in one semester. I counted, I promise.
Discusses what we think about an artucle in lecture then tested on what the author thinks.
This class is interesting by way of material, but Mrs. Schaupp finds a way to drone on a little too much during lectures. The board is usually cluttered with random thoughts, and notes are nearly impossible to take. All of the lectures are used to discuss our thoughts and feelings on the readings, but the tests are based on how the writer thinks.
Professor Schaupp is a very nice person and she genuinely cares about her students. However, class is very boring and repetitive. You have a reading for nearly every class period and your grade is made up of basically just quizzes, a group project, participation/attendance, and a final. Show up and do the homework and you'll get an A, just boring.
I took this class on a whim and did not know what to expect. There was a lot of reading involved outside of class and taking notes in class was a must. She makes you really think and participating will help you learn and understand the information better. Definitely difficult, but not impossibly hard.
I took this class because I had to. Do not take it unless you absolutely have to. The class is long and boring. It is almost impossible to take notes because she writes things on the board super cluttered. She can be a nice person, but don't miss class or you will have no idea what you missed.
Her lectures can be very boring as she doesn't really know how to lead/guide the class through the content. It has the potential to be super interesting, but you beat a lot of ideas to death without fully even understanding them. Be prepared for essays for tests, so just study the ideas of each philosopher. Either way, Kristin is incredibly nice
The notes on the board make no sense she's all over the place making it extremely hard to take notes and follow along. Her quizzes are very difficult no matter how much I studied I never knew what I was walking into because she was trying to trick you with wording on the questions. She is extremely unhelpful even when you go into her office hours
She is impossible to understand, never gives you time to do in class group work. I read the material but still barely passed. Going to her office hours does not help!! Worse professor I have ever taken.
Took this class excited to learn more about philosophy. Ended up dreading class because the way she teaches is confusing and the quizzes are extremely difficult. The only good thing is that part of your grade is based off of group quiz scores. Would not recommend or take again.
I would not recommend taking this. The lectures are stale and its impossible to learn in an environment where the professor constantly shuts down students, comments, and any thoughts other than her own. She nitpicks everything and the only right answer is hers. The grading is extremely critical and does not feel like a 100 level class at all.
The WORST professor I have ever taken. Rude and degrading to students. Notes are impossible to follow and the quizzes are true or false. The questions on the quizzes dont even relate to material learned in class. Do not take this class unless you absolutely have to and if you do check every other section before resorting to this joke.
Ignore the hilarious tag for this professor, the only thing that was funny was how bad this class was taught. She barely graded the whole semester so you never knew where you were at. Wouldnt recommend taking if you have a way out of it at all.
Not sure what all of these extremely negative reviews are about. If you do the work and take the time to understand the material, you should do fine. She does use a different grading scale than just canvas but if you ask she will give you a complete breakdown on your grade. Accomodating and willing to help. Average.
She is so passive aggressive to her students and is honestly very rude. If she has a problem with something she makes sure you know about it but it's always in a negative, degrading way. Her class isn't awful but her as a professor was not good. Definitely would not take her as a professor again.
My only complaint about this class was how it's kinda hard to follow along with notes. She's a little all over the place during lectures. The quizzes were super easy. If you read the articles and follow along with lectures, this is an easy A. One other thing is she grades on a GPA scale, so you have to calculate your own grade.
I came to college to be challenged and not for easy As. That was what high school was about. Sadly, there are still people in college who only want an A and don't care about knowledge. If you want to learn and you can handle challenge, take Dr. Schaupp. Her classes are what college is supposed to be. I am embarrassed by my peers who only want an A
hard class, she moves on fast. needs to explain more and understand that we are not philosophers like her.
Professor Schaupp is the worst professor I have ever had. I went to her office hours and she did not even help or answer any questions. She is not caring and if you miss a quiz it is game over for you. She is rude and degrades her students publicly in class. Students lead the class which causes you to fail the quiz which is based on her opinions.
I personally liked Professor Schaupp, but lectures are kind of hard to follow at 9:30am. You should defiantly be in class to be able to understand whats expected and what you should expect on the tests! Overall I think philosophy is just not my thing but she knows what she is talking about
This class was one of the worst classes I've ever taken. The lectures were tough to understand. I don't know whether it was because of the confusing material or just the way I didn't understand her explanations of things. She also never showed what your grade was throughout the course, so you were always in the dark.
She was very nitpicky. She shot down students in a very disrespectful manner in front of the whole class. There was talk about there being interpretations In philosophy, but news flash, Only hers is accepted. I hated this class and I left feeling angry every day. This did not feel like a 100 level course.
It is a 100 level class and she treats it like its a 400 level. Also shes a bell doesnt dismiss you I do type of professor. Avoid taking if you care about your grade because you will never know it until the semester is over.
Schaupp is a master of never answering questions. When you ask her a question she can tip-toe around the answer for 30 minutes without giving you any useful information. If you're lucky she may give you one small morsel of information during an hour meeting with her. Her rubrics are unclear and do not line up with how she grades.
She is knowledgeable but not helpful. She is not accessible through email at all. Also loves to degrade students. She is very defensive and everything is through her opinion. Do not take this class if you don't have to
Dodges giving any help. Despite the class being ethical reasoning, you only really cover ethics minorly. A majority of your grade is a group project where you will be given zero assistance by the professor, instead she will dodge the questions or just entirely mislead you. Grading is curved but thats practically forced due to the 7 question quizzes
I loved the class, but it isn't for everyone. I've read a lot of reviews saying that she shames students, which isn't true. In class, we talked about each article and she would ask questions about it to gauge our understanding. If someone said something incorrect, she would correct them and move on. This isn't the same as shaming someone.
Readings aren't scholarly so they're easy to understand. Classes have heavy emphasis on participation, so most of the class is wasted discussing tangentially related topics. The tests are the worst- multiple choice questions written to trick you by mixing up authors, and essay tests where no one scores higher than a B
I was worried about this class after reading RMP reviews, but actually had a good experience. Dr. Schaupp's classes actually feel like what college is supposed to be like. She is very knowledgeable and pushes students to broaden their perspectives and logical thinking skills. If you want to be challenged in a good way, take this prof.
Loves to answer questions with her own question and leave you more confused. End of the semester project there was no guidance, and we didn't even present them. If you sit near someone who understands the concepts you should be fine tbh. Quizes are only 7 questions, then you take a group quiz of the same questions
Easily 20-30 pages of readings per class, super unfocused as a collection. Ironically had no tolerance for disagreement in discussion--totally jumps down your throat, no matter how respectful you are. Project expectations were unclear, always seemed disappointed. During presentations, she often interrupted to criticize or talk over students.
I got a poor grade the first time around and wanted to help my GPA a little bit by retaking the course. At the end of the day, her course overlaps something I cannot miss or switch around and she denied my request to leave 20 minutes early once a week. She was horrible my first time around and I find her insufferable now.
She refuses to learn herself how to use canvas. Egotistic.
This is actually the worst class I have ever taken. If you want to know what your grade is, good luck, it is locked. She told us we can calculate our grade if we want to know what it is. If you have opposing opinions, you are automatically in the wrong. Her quizzes are awful. If there wasn't a word limit I could go on for days how bad this class is
I think it was the goal of Professor Shaupp to make every day I attended her class a horrible one. She has at best, surface-level takes on philosophy and will tell you your opinion is wrong. Half of this class is group work. She goes till the last min every class. You can't see your grade. Lectures are redundant and repetitive. DONT TAKE THIS CLASS
If you have ADHD DON'T TAKE. All the comments for this professor are true and more. She takes your words and turns them into a "well actually" statement which was either the same as the answer you gave, or she turns your words into her own to fit her narrative. You're always wrong/not quite right and I'm always right.
She doesn't actually answer questions you have, she just asks another question back to you and leaves you more confused. She treats us like kindergarteners, she yells at people to put phones and computers away. She literally chased after someone that was going to the bathroom and didn't allow it because there was a quiz out in the classroom Bad AF
This is probably the most boring and pointless class I have ever taken. She gives us a bunch to read, we talk about the E-X-A-C-T same thing for like 3 class periods, take quiz, and then repeat. Don't expect any fun ethical scenarios and debates. Makes an hour feel like five hours.
I liked that we worked with groups and talked with them lots. But Professor Schaupp never answered questions directly when asked outside of class whether it was by email or in person. She felt very unapproachable. Lots of readings, a new one every 2 weeks or so. Final was so confusing. She did not explain what we were to do or the grading of it.
The professor has a very specific teaching style that can be challenging. Lectures can be repetitive, and she doesn't always directly answer questions. However, engaging with the textbook and study tools like unstuck ai can help you succeed. Overall, the class is manageable with effort.
Honestly not a great class. So boring and mostly irrelevant. I would not take this class if you can avoid it. I was told not to take it but I thought it would be alright. I was wrong. Super redundant and mentally draining. Grade is hidden all semester. Probably my least enjoyable class in my entire 4 years here. Highly recommend against.
This class is awful, do not take it. If you could take any other class for your LE requirement take it. I am sitting in class and just emailed my advisor to withdraw, she explains nothing. But then expects you to know exactly what's going on… and she also doesn't respond to emails or give you any help.
She's nice enough but deliberately unhelpful at times. The readings were pretty confusing throughout class, would not recommend if you aren't used to philosophy. Her grading of our final group projects was harsh considering we took into account all THREE pages of feedback she gave us on our draft.
She is a really great person and willing to make time to meet with you. However, this class was one of the hardest I've taken (I'm a senior with a 4.0) and took up so much time. Harsh grader, confusing lectures, never felt like I had clear direction when talking to her. She lectures in circles.
very tough to sit through lectures. reading heavy. Don't recommend. The professor is fine, the classes suck.
