good teacher. Useful and easy to understand, but attendance is mandatory...
As an English teacher she knows her stuff, but make sure you go to class!
great teacher. know what she talking about and will extend essay deadline if needed to.
Very good teacher. Shes the best ENGL teacher I've had since... middle school, and that was way long ago. I've learned A LOT from her class and it carried over to my new class. Currently, I'm the only one in my class getting A's because of this teacher while everyone else getting C's and B's.
She is amazing! I've learned a lot about speech from her class! Her class is very challenging, but!! after the calss you'll see how much your English and speech skills are improved!!She is really dedicated to each student and always does her best to impove students' English ability. I really love her class!!!
hottest teacher on campus and really good class
Ms.Smith is an easy teacher. Only 2 essays. She always finishes class earlier. She asked we to buy a grammar book, but she didn't use it at all. Take her, if u want easy teacher, but u just learn a litter from her.
I dont agree with the last user, and I think I was in their class. Mrs. Smith was really healpful and I learend alot from her. She knew I was going through personal stuff and always caught me up and gave me extra time because she wanted me to finish when I was going to drop.
really good teacher. she knows her stuff. just do what she wants and she's be nice and easy to you
She was nice and if you needed help she was always around. Went over the basics and always reminded you of things before they are due so you dont forget last minute. Also helps lots to have friends in class so you can help each other!!
this teacher is super ultra awesome!!!!!!!!!! she is one of the few teachers that actually cares about her students, if you have a personal problem or just need help she understand. she makes sure to teach you everything you need to know. i would recommend this class to anyone. great teacher!!!!!
Ms. Smith is so helpful. During her lectures she would tell you what is expected on your papers step by step. She is strict about attendance, but I've walk in the class thirty minutes after class starts and doesn't even mention your late unless you do it often. Very respectful to her students and easy to talk. I hesistated coming to this class in t
I loved her class(eng93), she is a great teacher and I learned a lot. She checks attendance every time. We did only two essays and she really wants them to be good. The only down size was that she takes long time to return you papers but I would take her class again for sure.
Professor Smith does an amazing job at preparing you for the future. The classroom always has a good energy, and she creates a strong peer to peer network within the class. She will make you a stronger writer, if you want it. If you have the chance, and are lucky enough to take her course, be sure to take full advantage.
she's nice. i really learned a lot in her class.
great teacher. understands the students in what they need. she's nice and helpful.
She's one of the best English teachers I've ever had. I normally hate english but her class was very enjoyable because shes very engaging and she teaches you a lot of ways to improve argumentative essays. Attendance and participation is key. I'd recommend her to everyone especially to those who particularly do not like English. Great teacher
90% of class time was group work, discussion, or peer reviews.
This is so far the great English professor i ever had. she keeps you interested with her problem posing method. you learn a lot about social issues with her. i couldnt wait for class day. she is very organized and loves teaching. if you are looking for a real English professor, this the best you can have on the campus. she is great!
She is really sweet and helpful. Attendance is mandatory and there is quite a bit of homework. Her grading on essays are HARSH.
I really like Ms. Smith's teaching methods and also I like the way how she makes the class to participate the lessons. It seems her grading is fair, but she expects you to work hard. Overall, she's really a great teacher.
took her 92 class couple of semester ago. she was great. very nice too.
Ms. Smith is an enthusiastic teacher. She also nice and easy to communicate with. However, she doesn't give enough feedback on essays and harsh grading on essays. We only did 2 essays for the semester. Also,1 in-class summary for midterm and 1 in-class essay for final. Overall, she a fair teacher and she gave me a C for midterm and final grade.
Her assignments are easy to understand and she is also pretty.
She's alright. She is nice but I didn't really learned anything.
Great teacher! Very straight forward in what you need to know or be prepared for Engl 96. she puts effort in her teaching methods making sure students understand her lectures.
she's so pretty! wish she taught english 1a :( take her! highly recommended!
shes always happy but her essay topics are hard to write
I like her a lot but her essays are hard to find topic sentences in ENGL96. Don't know why people says she is easy in ENGL96. In ENGL96, we do 3 essays during the summer such as we learned about technology and social network. However, her ENGL93 is much easier. Overall, she makes students happy and likes all students.
Well, all is good except the grades for essays. She is a great English teacher, and she taught how to write an essay. She gave us rubrics so that we can know what we do good or bad in the paper. If you are a ESL student taking her class, remember that you need to work very very very hard. Otherwise, you will definitely fail in this class.
We have lots of homework. It is hard to get good essay grade in her class if you are bilingual student.
I think she's a ok teacher and tries her best to explain and help, but she likes top help her star students most even when others need help. She thinks her class should be your #1 priority in life, which is not practical. Also very harsh when grading!
If You want just to pass , do not join. If you want to learn English, she is the best teacher ever. guaranteed ;)
If you want to just pass, your place is not here. if you want to learn English, she is the best teacher for you. i really liked her class.
She's ok but not very approachable if you need anything. 10 min journal writing journal sessions at start of class. The whole class we get in partners and nobody knows what to say about the discussion very annoying. Alot of ESL in class so just retake your ace ment not worth it. Expects too much from a college student and does not reciprocate.
The first english teacher who taught me a lot about writing an essay. Very helpful and considerably fair. If you wanat to learn, take her class. Many people in my class wished she taught 1A.
make sure you make it on time to class and to every class she will notice even when you think she wont. make sure to pay attention and you'll do great in the class but even if your great if you miss a couple days it will affect your grade immensely.
She's a good teacher but expects too much. Definitely do not take her if you want to skim by, but if you want to learn she's good.
She is very selfish in the sense that she sees a student is too advanced for the course and will keep them there. Other teachers offer and follow though with assisting students who are too advanced for this level of English. Don't take her class she won't help, makes you get in groups and nobody is ever prepared! She never teaches just group work
Do not take her class. At the end of semester, half of students dropped her class. She is so strict and you are going to group work every time.
It's the worst English teacher i've ever had (I come from ESL). She gives u back the essays until the end of semester, and she tells you that you are getting a C or D . She makes you write journals that she never grades, read books that you never discuss, not helpful at all. Internationals better watch out! Save Ur money
Tough grader and not very helpful I would not recommend her. She is a horrible teacher. She is one of the worst teachers at CCSF
Ms. Kristin Smith is a great teacher and her english 961A class is one of the best classes that i have taken period. What you learn in this class can be applied to every aspect of your life, plus she is a chill teacher too. She seems to understand her students. If you take her class and do the work, you want be disappointed.
Miss Smith, what can i not say about her! She is hands down one of the best teachers i had in college. I haven't had english class over 6 years and i took her class the accelerated 961A and let me tell you she is so chill. Everyone was telling me how the accelerated classes are hard and not to take them but not with miss Smith. Great teacher!
Would never take this class again she is no help at all . Expects you to know whatever she knows . Always having a bad look in her face as if she hates her job. I like a teacher that enjoys teaching not a boring one.
She's tough but will go out of her way for people who are doing there work. If you just want a passing grade, this isn't the class. If you want to learn something, take her
She will go out of her way if you are. If you seem like you just want an easy pass, she gives more attention to students who seem like they're working hard. I don't agree with the poor ratings. She is chill if you are doing your part.
She will help if you go to office hours. ESL students need to work very hard on own in grammar though
Best English class i have taken. Recommended
helped me to skip a level and I didn't even think I could. She is great. Class is not just about how to write, but how to be a good person. I liked the reading This I believe and thinking about the themes we talked about. I use my phone less now.
summer english class was good but lots of work! hopefully I pass
Class on women's issues - more interesting than I thought it would be! I didn't know it was going to be on women until I signed up.
Like a pyscology class. we read about personality and character
She's the best teacher I have ever had, but she makes you work. Do not expect to just pass. And make sure you go to class. If you want an easy grade, this is not the class.
Nice but busy all the time. If you show you are into the class and topics he makes time but does not have time for slackers
She was pretty clear on what she expected from her students. A typical day in class: Write a 5 minute journal (easy peasy), discuss with small group what you did during the last class, talk about a chapter in a book. It's really easy if you show up and do the work. There are two essays and a final in class essay. I would take this class again.
busy but clear and helpful if you ask for it or go to the lab. into her topic and expects you to be. Also dont miss class because attendance counts
did not know it was on women studies but ended up really liking this class and the book was good. gave lots of time and practice for each essay but grades hard
takes a long time to give back essays but I like how she breaks down each part. I haven't written an essay since high school and I was scared of english. Now I feel like I can write an essay
This class is all about women's studies. There are two books you are required to read which focus on shame and violence against women. There are also two essays 4 pages each which takes her forever to grade. She requires you to keep a "journal", which you write in every class period,I think she does this to take up time.
did not know it was a class on emotions until I was in it but I really liked it. Takes a long time to hand back essays but I do feel like I can write an essay now I hadnt written one since high school and never thAT long
Always have a mean mug on her face makes it seems as if she doesn't like her job . She is very rude when handing out forms and she acts like she doesn't care about anything and she can make you feel very uncomfortable
This class is the best thing that ever happened to me, and no words could describe how kind and amazing Ms. smith is.
Ms Smith was very welcoming and provided such a great learning environment! She was awesome and wish she taught a 1A class. The work is steady but nothing to crazy, again she is so awesome! She makes a great benefit to City College of S.F.
Got more from this class than I thought I would. She cares about people that seem to care abotu the class but no time for slackers
Life changing lecture, amazing professor.
She seems every nice but when it comes to her grading she sucks. Her grading is unfair, most of study fail her class. But you need to wrok really hard to get the grade you want.
She is nice and very professional. She is kind of strict but she is fair. take her class, you will learn more than you expect. if you take her class, be prepared, it would not be easy; but don't worry, she will help you get through.
Ms. Kristin Smith is an absolutely an amazing teacher. She has an amazing way of teaching. I honestly loved her class I took 88 English, she defiantly gets you papered for 1A. I recommend for all the students who are struggling with essay is to take her class. She would let you love English and you might think of in being an English teacher.
The books used were different than those listed in the class schedule/bookstore link, making it hard to prepare at the start of the semester. Grading seems to be inconsistent and unfair. Assignments aren't always clear. No late work accepted.
seems organized and she really likes her topic on emotions. No late work though.
The best teacher I have ever had.
Do not late add her online class unless u have the books ready! Online course per week consists of reading 20-40 pg , reply to a prompt, work on essay, reply to other's discussion posts, and turn in another assignment related to topic. Text used are useful and has to do with emotions and commmunication. Class is a lot of work, you have been warned!
The online course of this class is well organized. Each week, she provides insightful information mainly on essay writing. She also gives good feedback, suggestions to online tools (such as Natural Reader) to your assignments, and even provides clear grading rubric. Although this class is a lot of work, it is normal and usual for an English class.
A lot of reading because of the summer session but hands down best class I have taken so far. Kristin provides very structured topics with great support, clear deadlines and expectations. Every step of writing a college level essay is covered meticulously and the subjects we wrote on taught me personally a lot about communications with others.
I took an 8 week accelerated English class with professor Smith, and boy was it educational. It was probably the most reading and writing I have ever done in my life (obviously for an English class) but professor Smith was there for support and advice every step of the way! Would suggest this class to anyone!
She seems nice, but this class is a lot of work. She estimates that a student will need around a MINIMUM of 8 hours to finish the homework each week. On top of all of our other classes and jobs. She also requires her students to occasionally submit a video assignment so she can "see our faces". I probably won't take her class again...
Professor Smith's English 1A topic was very inspirational. Emotional Intelligence will make students become better people. Her grading standards are very clear, and she will remind you about missing assignments. She is a caring person who will understand when students are for instance sick, and allows them to turn in late assignments.
Kristen is great! Understanding, and easy to reach. Great teacher. Lots of work, but you will get something out of it.
Kristen is a great instructor. She definitely wants the class to interact with one another (online course) so be prepared for lots of discussions and assignments where you provide feedback to your classmates. There is a lot of reading material, but I found it interesting and useful in my every day life. Lots of writing and research.
she's nice but she will give you so much homework like you don't have other classes or a job. I would not take her class again because the amount of work she will give you and she gives you short amount of time to complete the work.
Prof. Smith makes lecture fun and interesting keeping you engaged. I am not one to typically read but her class made it easier. Also a plus required textbooks were interesting topics. Must participate and do homework to pass.
Kristin is a true educator and always gave helpful feedback. The class is A LOT of work, but worth it. I would take her again.
I really enjoyed this course, the material was very interesting and really made me want to participate each week. With that said, participation in the online discussions is a MUST if you want to really understand the material and complete the assignments correctly. Organize your time, complete the discussions, and be positive about the texts.
Professor Smith gives out a ton of homework and reading assignments. You will need to pace yourself with the modules that are given out every week. I would advise you to complete one module each day to keep up with the class, especially if you are taking it online. Overall great professor and very understanding. Also utilize her tutor.
This class will require you to read tons of materials (at least 3books cover to cover plus online readings) and there will be a lot of assignments every week almost everyday. It's very time consuming that's why I it's necessary to allocate time for it or else you'll fall behind. The books were interesting but it's hard to take other classes with it
Native English speaker here. The time demands make her class EXTREMELY UNENJOYABLE. You are not allowed to think freely and must follow *her* writing frame. Zero room for creative writing. Need 16hr+/wk. Outside thinking not welcomed, despite what is stated (will be reflected in grade). I cannot recommend to anyone who maintains an outside life.
Online class and harder than I thought it would be but was worth it. Kristin is easy to contact and helps. it is an essay class and you learn how to write a formal essay. I am not sure why someone here said there was no creative writing you do get to pick topics that have to do with the reading and it is a themed class
In this class, we read 3 thick books cover to cover aside from online readings and online videos. Tons of papers to do. I would suggest not getting major subjects with this class because it requires at least 8 hours a week to finish everything that needs to be done. It's really a hard class.
The best English course ever, and I highly recommend it! It improved my reading, writing, thinking, and me personally! The course books/discussions/videos changed me for better! I appreciate Prof. Smith's dedication to help and her encouragement! It's really important to have a professor who cares , gives students the best, and helps them succeed!
Material was interesting, well addressed and developed. The class is well distributed and organized in the platform . Separate link for syllabus and all due dates so you can set reminders. Links for tutoring and library easy access. Both Declan & Kristin were helpful and responded in a timely manner whenever I needed them. Clear rubric and grading.
I really like this professor, you will learned a lot in her class , books are not super expensive like other classes. She makes you work for your grade. she will give you a lot of feed back and try to help as much as she can. I really enjoy her class!
The constant communication from the professor worked very well for an online class. The professor made constant communication about deadlines/ assignments etc. this was very helpful especially in a short course. The professor did a great job at being available. I didn't know it was an accelerated class though when I registered which made it hard
Teaches accelerated course so class is done in 1/2 semester. Fast paced. Might be too fast even for the instructor (seemed she couldn't keep up with grading). She's nice and responds to emails but if you have entire semester to dedicate to Eng1A, take the full 16wk course. Not worth the frustration of dealing with tighter timelines for assignments.
She gave a heavy work load, changed paper requirements and due dates at the last minute, and constructive feedback was so vague it wasn't helpful and nearly impossible to figure out what she was looking for. This did not feel like an Eng 1A. If you work or are planning on taking other classes I'd highly recommend going with a different teacher.
Get ready to read a lot(like all English classes). She is very clear, sending constant reminders each week; especially when deadlines near! She is very clear on her expectations to earn a passing grade. I enjoy this class and the reading very much! Also, tutors are assigned to help you pass! USE THEM TO YOUR BENEFIT! It's free and they are GREAT!
You will leave this class frustrated. Due dates change last minute. Requirements for assignments are vague. You will receive little feedback if any on assignments. Most of the assignments are graded weeks after being turned in so you will never know how you are doing. Save yourself the aggravation and pick a different class.
Really is likable but makes the class harder than it needs to be. Too reliant on peer reviews, which is awkward in online platform. She puts a lot of emphasis on the writing frame, but even if you have your own writing style, you'll be fine as long as you use the catchphrases of the semester (emotional intelligence, non-violent communication).
Smith was a sweet lady, Fun class to be in !! definitely will learn over the semester !! One Thing I can say assignments are spread out .. to the point were it still has last semester dates and doesn't change until few days before actual due date. Pretty easy English class for the most part. If you are able to get in into her class do it !!
Little to none explanation of class materials, lots of assignments with no helpful feedback, confusing deadlines and expectations.
I love these readings because they are helpful in my life. Follow the module step by step, you will succeed.
Smith is very nice and chooses readings that are helpful outside of this class I have bought the book a second time to give to my mom because the material is helpful for our family. There is a lot of writing though and be prepared to work!
She's an awful teacher. I took her online summer class. Her class was structured horribly and full of mistakes. There were even incorrect due dates. She was not open to constructive criticism on this issue. If you take this class expect to be frustrated with every new module. The pacing was good for a summer class and she communicates frequently.
She has very amazing and interesting lectures my favorite so far is the emotional intelligence by David Goldman that book made me realize a lot of things and it teaches you something that we all need in our life
The guidelines are very unclear. And she didn't answer to the point each time she responded to the emails. But she demands students to be clear when writing emails asking questions. Why can't she do it herself? She always responds to emails that are confusing.
I remember taking Kristin Eng 92 class back in Spring 2010. She was very nice. The reading and writing very pretty interesting. If I could go back to school, Kristin would be one of my teacher that I choose to work with again.
This is a very effective english class. The essay writing structure teaching and pacing is very effective and worthwhile. If you want to become a better essay writer and presenter this is a good class, but show up every day, otherwise your experience will likely be negative.
I took her online class in summer. She cares about the topic and wants students to care. If you do, you will be fine. she is very clear if you are reading the modules instructions and she is always easy to reach for questions
Kristin cares about the topic and was easy to reach at basically all hours. She also went out of her way to help me on my last essay. There is ALOT of reading for the class, though, so be prepared to spend a ton of hours reading and participating in discussions.
I found useful that you provided resources for each step, like how to write intro, body, conclusion & the requirements for each. I appreciate that the texts we read in this class as they can be applied to our personal life, they didn't feel boring or something we read once & forget. I will definitely be re-reading these outside of class :)
I suggest that you try to maximize your study time for this class. I wish I had more time to read, reflect, and write as this course requires a significant amount of time. Lastly, make good use of tutoring sessions and workshops as they helped me so much with reading articles and writing essays.
Be ready to read a lot in a short period of time. The class has good structure and the topics are very applicable to every day life but you need to be ready to manage your time.
The more writing classes I take, the more I realize how engaging and informative this class is. Might be the best class ever. Although it is a lot of writing, and would be extremely difficult for anyone not decent at writing essays
The ENG1A is a 6 unit course over 12 weeks, it is a lot of work, so ask questions! Expect to do 3-6+hours of reading per week+HW.There are 3 Essays as well as weekly asnmt on canvas. The books you will read in this class are very interesting, they are about EQ/EI and NVC and you will def learn sum useful instead of mindless grinding which is nice!
She actually teaches, heavy course load but she took my writing to the next level if you want to learn take her. Be prepared to put in the hours.
She really encourages and cares 4 her students. The reading is very interesting. I feel she has made me a better writer due 2 her course material and being so helpful with feedback. Plus she has this cute little signing off message saying "I'm rooting for you!". That little message made me smile when I was feeling stressed. It's the little things!
relates the course to real life. makes the teaching relevant to all aspects of future communication in and outside of the classroom. she's incredibly understanding and makes sure to accommodate students needs. lectures are very casual which helps take the pressure off.
This class has a lot of writing, so you'll need to be prepared to put in the time. The professor is helpful and cares about the material, and using resources like unstuck study can make study prep easier. Overall, it's a challenging but rewarding course.
She is disorganized, her grading is completely off point, her canvas page has outdated information. She asks you to write something and then when she grades it she does so on her own opinion, when you are asked for your opinion. Her constant negative feedback is debilitating, she doesn't seem to know how to communicate with her students.
