She is suppose to teach us organization and time management skills yet she has none herself, class is once a week and that is way more than I want to talk to her.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HER! She will bore you to death and the quizzes are terrible and don't really have much to do with the material. Definitely an advanced reading class and text would be more interesting if taught by another professor I'm sure.
Searching another teacher and saw this and had to comment. I had her for an Irish lit class this spring. It was wonderful--not easy, but really interesting. Good movies too! She cared if we understood the readings and was always ready to help with readings and papers. Not an Eng. major, but I even read two books over the summer that she recommended
TERRIBLE TERRIBLE TERRIBLE. teaches directly from the book and does not teach during the class. she has the worst personality and thinks everything she does/says is right. blahhhhh
You definitely have to read for this class. I took her for Irish Lit. The class was really interesting. She offers a lot of extra information if needed and is way helpful. The syllabus my seem intimidating but the class was never overwhelming. Participation in discussion also helps. Makes the class go by and helps with getting info for quizzes.
I had her for eng295..this lady should be teaching highschool! she's so boring and class is a waste of time, but she does take attendance.
She is a nice person, but I would not reccomend her as an English 101 teacher. She seems like she would be better at higher level stuff, where people actually care to take her class. It is obvious that her heart is really in her work, which makes me sad that I hate English so much, because otherwise I would probably love her class.
TERRIBLE 101 teacher...she has VERY high expectations, but doesn't teach well encough for her students to actually meet her standards. Ridiculously hard for English 101.
There is a lot of required reading & I think it is hard to see how most of it relate to the class. The papers are pretty hard. She is always right... no matter what. But, she does show some interesting movies.
awesome teacher! She is so passionate about English and this spills over to the student. I have regained interest in reading novels and have brushed up writing skills. This is the one class I have enjoyed this semester! She also grades pretty easy, at least fair if you put in effort. Talk in class and take good notes and you will do fine!
A good class and teacher. she had interesting stories and books to read and some really good class discussions. I worked hard but she helped me a lot whenever I went to see her and even though I did not do great to begin I got a good grade in the end. She seemed like she was as happy as I was about that.
Ms McCue did a great job! The best part was class discussion that she really seemed to be interested in what we said. Keep up with the work. It is very reasonable, so just take time to do it regularly and its no problem, helps on tests and quizzes. Get help on papers if you need it because my friend did and she said Ms McCue made her a better write
GOOD CLASS AND GREAT TEACHER. REALLY HELPFUL IF YOU NEED IT. READING AND ASSIGNMENTS REALLY SPACED APART SO ITS AMAZING HOW MUCH WORK I DID BECAUSE IT DID N'T SEEM LIKE IT! MY FIRST GOOD GRADE IN ENGLISH!!
I enjoyed having class with her. In order to do well in her class you must analyze and annotate the readings from the syllabus. If you do that and answer her questions about the readings and go to class you will do good.
She can be very demeaning and sarcastic to her students and she loves to hear herself talk. I thought it was supposed to be about the students contributing to discussion. Her sense of humor is non-existent but she thinks a lot of what she says is funny and it is not. There are a lot of 255 teachers so find a different one.
I don't understand the comments about her demeaning students. I never found that. My boyfriend took another class from her and also thought that was not true at all. She helped me a lot, class discussion was interesting and she always wanted to know what we thought about what we read. She did make jokes but mostly about things in the reading or new
She is obsessed with Irish literature & extremely biased to all the views of that culture. She doesn't give any extra credit or try to help students when they need it.She grades too hard& makes rude & mean comments towards students about their thoughts on anything she doesn't agree with. Boring class, terrible teacher, gave half the class D's & F's
I found her to be a fair grader. She can be a little critical or sarcastic, but not mean. If you realize college is not supposed to be a cake walk and put in minimal/slightly moderate effort you will be fine.
She is a good teacher in that she tries to get us to think outside the box. Other than that her class was very difficult and it was hard to know exactly what she wanted on the texts/papers. If you're looking for an easy A don't take her.
I'm sure she is a good teacher for upper level classes, but for Freshmen Honors English, no. She was very unhelpful and expected us all to read her mind and know what to do. She gives assignments without explaining and just throws her students in. I wouldn't reccommend her for 101, 102, or 118.
Honestly don't see where the hatred's coming from, it DID take a while to get used to Miss McCue but after a while she became a great teacher - very easy grader (I got an 89 on an utter-garbage paper) and very helpful in conferences. She can sometimes be confusing when talking to whole class but if you get past that she's a great teacher
She wants you to write in a completely different way than you've been taught
If you have a hard time with writing papers, try to take a different class. This class is difficult--Ms. McCue can pretty vague in regards to papers--but I found it to be a very good class. Very difficult, but excellent for anyone who wishes to improve their writing. The pain is worth the gain!
Overall Good class, fair grading, will let you revise work. I did not gain much from this class though because I had already taken AP Enlgish but only got a 3, and this class was far easier, but she is very helpful and nice. Cons- at times expectations on assignments was a bit unclear, cancelled class OFTEN, still ended up with an A though :)
Ms. McCue was great! The reading was really well spaced out and the writing load pretty reasonable! I didnt like all the readings but really liked some others. I learned to go to see her about papers and that was the best thing. I learned more about how to write then I did in all my other Eng classes combined. I actually enjoyed class discussion!
I actually enjoyed her class. She was tough but fair. I learned a lot and found classes interesting. If you ever needed help and went to see her she would go out of her way and do whatever she could to help.
I had her for FYS and she treats this class like her English class. I feel like we didn't learn a thing about time management or getting adjusted. She's nice but way too picky about the assignments. It wasn't a hard class but she made it more work that it should have been which took time away from homework that actually needed the most time.
She grades pretty hard but she gives you the opportunity to revise papers.
Not only did I not learn anything, but my self esteem was lowered every time I walked into class.
Plays favorites and I was not one of them because I didn't sit upfront and brown nose. No idea what any paper was supposed to be, No leniency and harsh grading, ridiculously difficult for English 101, very demeaning and sarcastic. Avoid like the plague, seriously
This teacher is terrible. Since I'm a Journalism Minor and enjoy English I thought I would be fine. When the teacher is unorganized, loses things, and never gives you real ideas about what topics for quizzes/papers are, not even a genius can understand. She is rude & tries too hard to be funny.Only her view is the correct view, trust me. DON'T TAKE!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!! This is the worst class I've ever had. She is terribly unorganized, rude, and doesn't have a clue what she is talking about.
She is unorganized and confusing. She contradicts herself constantly, particularly on essay prompts - so basically they're impossible to understand. Grades papers by going through and looking for things to be wrong, instead of with an open mind. Discussions are boring and she will never agree with your opinion. Unhelpful and rude.
This is a sucky class. If you are a business student and you need English 295 or 255...take 255. Dont make the same mistake I made. You have an assignment due everyday you come to class whereas the other 295 classes dont. It sucks, she is late for class herself and the grades EXTREMELY HARD! AVOID AVOID AVOID!
This is the hardest class I've ever taken at UT....and I'm about to graduate. What she expects for a 200 level English class is ridiculous to say the least. Sometimes going to her office hours helped but often times I walked out with a huge blow to my self esteem.
Professor McCue isn't quite as bad as these comments make her out to be. I took her Irish lit class and did fine. However, the readings and movies, with the exception of one or two, were so dark and heavy. Nothing light or happy in that class! Go to her office hours and be sure to read before class, and you should be okay.
This class isn't difficult if you go to class every day and take notes on the stories you read. She'll like you better if you participate in the class discussion as well. Paper topics weren't too difficult but definitely go to her office hours(sometimes multiple times) to get help. Your paper grades will be much better. I liked her overall.
Talks to students like they are dumb. Threatens to low ball scores if you do not sign up for the extra class english 103. Is a total jerk. Likes to tell writers that use simple sentences that they are stupid, and LOVES to tell mature writers that their writing is obscure wordy and and still find a way to insult intelligence. Makes 101 way to hard.
Overall she is really helpful and cares about the students. If you come to her for help she'll tell you anything you need to do. Only four papers due all semester and most of them were pretty easy. One day we even had a pizza party. Really nice lady.
I had her for FYS 101 and I thought that she was one of the meanest people that I have met at UT. She always acted like we were so dumb and made a class that was supposed to be fun, not fun. I did not enjoy going to anything that she made us do and I found it to be pointless. Disapointed in my FYS class.
I would advise you to STAY AWAY. I took Eng 254 and her topic was Irish literature which seemed interesting, but she has a tendency to not be clear at all, and LOVES only giving quizzes when she can tell many people aren't there, makes it seem like she doesn't care about students well being at all.
People in my class did not like her because they are lazy and don't read the syllabus which tells us when assignments are due and get upset when she does not remind us. If you keep up with readings and just do the work the class it is not hard. She may grade a little hard but its because she wants you to do well. I found her very helpful and nice.
Very marginal teacher. Really belongs at the middle school level. Very arrogant even though she barely meets the requirements to teach the course. UT must have been desperate.
Would avoid this teacher at all cost. Was consistently late most of the semester and is unorganized. Ask A LOT of questions because her directions are extremely unclear. She grades hard and doesnt put grades on blackboard. She expects you to record and calculate your own grade which is impossible because she doesnt hand a majority of the work back.
You probably shouldn't take this class unless you're a theater major. She is rude, and her grading is harsh. There are random attendance quizzes, and she asks for too much info for the test answers. I'm content with the B+ that I received, but it was not a pleasant experience. Bottom line, proceed with EXTREME caution, or better yet, not at all.
Came to class late all of the time. She assigns 20 page reading assignments from a book that talks about how to write emails which should be common sense but creates quizes on small particular details. the class is not helpful. She tries to make a common sense class into something hard. scattered teaching abilities.
Ms. McCue is a really nice lady, and she sincerely wants us to learn how to write. There were a few occasions when she was unreasonably inflexible, but overall I enjoyed having her as a professor. She definitely cares about us as individuals. We did quite a few group projects in this class--as long as you READ and go to class and ask questions, you will be fine. I can see how her reviews are controversial, but believe me people--she's not that bad.
This is a class that i was looking froward to. she consistently shows up late and grades tough. the material is not covered well in class. she assigns reading and expects you to pick up all the information from the reading instead of teaching it. i would avoid this teacher.
Always late to class. Grades unreasonably hard, with no explanation behind it. Quizzes from reading assignments that didn't test knowledge, but random details throughout the text that nobody picks up on. Should be incredibly easy, but unfortunately made a lot more annoying.
Had a lot of work, but it was all doable. She gives really good feedback and does conferences a lot to talk one on one. She goes off on tangents in lecture a lot but overall she was a pretty good professor.
shes boring personality wise but so organized with her lectures, class schedule ad assignments. generous grader but zero tolerance for late work
The reviews about professor McCue scared me at the beginning. However, once I got into the class and actually decided to give it a chance I really enjoyed it. She is very understanding and patient if you only discuss things with her. I highly recommend her as a professor.
Doesnt post grades online. Does everything by paper so you dont know your grade the entire class. Not straight forward, or direct. Didnt understand her point of view on anything. Lots of reading. You could be correct, but only her answer is the right answer. Did not enjoy her.
Overall, Ms. McCue is not someone who I would want as a professor again. She gives pretty bad feedback and the class itself is basically pointless. She assigns an insane amount of homework and communicating with her is the hardest thing ever. When 1 on 1 meets with her give you time to talk to her, she just picks random things to talk about.
Prof. McCue is an overall good teacher. She loves to engage with the class and seems like she really cares about her students. She had us do 2 major papers and 1 project. Her assignments are decently difficult and she's a picky grader, however her canvas is well organized and she will always find time for a conference.
She is a difficult teacher and gives feedback, but overall not worth the pain for a whole semester. Save yourself the trouble and register someone else.
Ms. McCue simply does not understand Canvas, Google Drive, or any other online academic tools. She doesn't know how to post grades into Canvas, so I still have no idea what my average is. She is also extremely arrogant and rude to any student who ever dares to ask a question, and just never provided meaningful instruction. STAY AWAY!
Professor McCue, although a hard grader, is a very kind and understanding professor. She allows a lot of essays to be rewritten for better grades, provides good feedback, and gives a little extra credit. She is always willing to listen to your problems and willing to help, and gives extensions when she feels the class needs it.
She is very understanding and willing to work with students on deadlines, including extensions when she feels it's necessary. She is a very tough grader and takes a long time to provide feedback.
Not accessible outside of class, runs late to class often, takes a while to grade, very confusing grading system, and minimal feedback, bad at posting assignments ahead of time, it almost seems like she's very scrambled with her class. It has made this course so much harder and more confusing than it needs to be.
Don't take her whatever you do. She speaks to the class like you are preschoolers. She doesn't post assignments until prior to the night before it's due. You will barely receive any feedback from her directly, and the peer reviews she assigns don't accomplish anything. Save yourself, find a different professor for this course.
She is not always very clear about what is due and when. She will randomly ask for assignments that we did not know where a thing. Will also do this thing where you ask her a question and she will give you an answer that does not pertain to what you asked.
She is a very kind/understanding lady and she loves her students, but this is a really hard class. We have been graded by 4 assignments this semester. Doesn't post the link to turn assignments in until the night before its due (around 7 pm) which makes assignments hard to follow. Class is pretty pointless and I feel like I'm wasting my time going.
She's a nice lady, but she has no business teaching college students. Her classes are a mix of pointless reminders and looking at past students' work. You come out of every class meeting more confused than when you went in. Class is completely centered around 2 major research papers. She lets most people revise, but her expectations are unclear.
she was just not nice sometimes, mood switches quickly, she thinks she's never wrong
saying she is not internet savvy is the greatest understatement of the millennia. she refuses to answer emails, and if u ask her in class, you mayb get a semi-coherent answer. she cancels class 10 minutes in advance, but schedules online classes for later time periods. the one good thing is she couldnt teach long enough to fill the whole period.
Professor McCue is not a great professor. She does not set up her students for success and is really unavailable to help. She doesn't understand how to use canvas so I didn't know what my grade was until grades were posted at the end of the semester. She is a really tough grader for the lack of teaching she does.
Endless lectures where she explains assignments horribly, adding essential details when they're due. She likes to make assignments and tell us they're due at midnight. However, she doesn't allow the assignment to open until 9 pm! The only feedback we get is from peer reviews, but the classmates doing the review are just as lost as you are. HORRIBLE
Doesn't let you see your grades at all. There's only 6 things that are for a grade and she grades them 3 months after they're due. She doesn't let you see your overall class grade at all. Who does that help????? Every class is a never-ending lecture where she just reads everything she's posted on canvas (which she doesn't know how to use).
The lectures can be really boring sometimes and the work is not super clearly defined. I ended up having a lot of late nights because of this class and her telling us about assignments only a day or two prior to their due dates. Saturday night due dates are not it. BUT SOMETIMES SHE BRINGS YOU COOKIES AND THEY ARE SO GOOD IM EATING ONE RN MMMMMMMMM
Wanted to be hateful but she brought us homemade cookies on the last day of class. They're very good. Wouldn't recommend taking her class though!
Professor McCue is genuinely so sweet and cares about her students a lot (brought us baked goods twice!!), but she makes the class harder than it needs to be. Her biggest downsides are she doesn't post deadlines until last minute and communication is difficult. With that being said, I didn't think the class was too difficult, just a lot of work.
Horrible teacher, avoid at all costs. Lost my final and doesn't even input grades, literally couldn't tell you what my final grade was. She also will assign things and not even tell you about them, so I received many missing assignments.
Kristina McCue is the worst teacher I've had at UTK. Her feedback is inconsistent and makes no sense. She will tell you one thing one time, then criticize it the next time, acting as if she never gave that original feedback. She can take extremely long times to respond to emails and questions. Her grading is also incredibly inconsistent.
Professor McCue's kindness to me was monumental when I took her class. Her class is mostly graded by three projects, which are time consuming, and there is lots of reading to do. My mom died last spring and she gave me the whole semester to turn stuff in and checked in on me. She was very understanding of my situation and I am so grateful for that.
makes the class page on canvas impossible to navigate. Does not post assignments at all or until a few hours before they are due. VERY tough grader.
Doesn't tell you about assignments that she assigns. Does not post assignments until a few hours before they are due. Cant see overall grade in the class. VERY tough grader with minimal and vague feedback. Does not grade paper months after submitted. Canvas page is a total nightmare to navigate. Lectures are very confusing.
Posts announcements about assignments due the night before at ridiculous hours. Try 3:25 in the morning on a Thursday. Cant even see my grades in the class, very nit-picky and tough grader. I often come in the class and leave with the same amount of knowledge retained. Finding a resource on canvas is a treasure hunt on its own, too many papers.
Do not recommend. When walking to this class I would cross streets without looking both ways in the hopes that I would get run over.
I would rather drop out than take another class with her again. She does not post Canvas assignments until minimal hours before they are due, and then does not give feedback on them. It is November and I still do not know my current grade in this class. Only feedback you will receive is "peer reviews" which is useless when your peers are struggling
Can't understand her
Tough class
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS. She would post assignments at 10 pm the night before they are due. Promises feedback but never delivers it. Will give you bad grades on assignments but won't be able to justify it. Never answers emails or shows up to her scheduled office hours, so she is impossible to reach outside of class time. This class was pointless.
Definitely avoid this professor if possible. First of all, I am unsure of my grade as we only have 3 "graded" assignments where she simply provides a letter with no explanation. Second of all, assignments would never be posted until either 11pm the night before or morning of making it difficult to keep up with work outside of class. DO NOT TAKE.
Avoid this class at all costs. Lectures are pointless to attend, all she does is read what's posted on the canvas page. You are only graded on three big assignments and she gives absolutely no feedback to you while you are in the writing process. She goes back on her word all the time and often gives unclear instructions about assignments.
she was nice and caring but i don't like how we cant see our grades and she never gave feedback on our assignments even after graded at the end of the semester so we cant know how to improve or what we did wrong because she it never specified
She promised to give feedback on submissions when we never once received any critics on any of our assignments. You can ask in class in front of everyone but be careful cause she will go on a long winded rant and dance around the topic and never give you a clear answer. Only feedback was peer reviews done by students who are just as lost as you.
Horrible. So bad. Dreaded this class every day. Never graded anything on time and never gave feedback on ANYTHING. Was always at least 10 minutes late. Rambled about the material in class yet somehow never actually taught anything? Also never cough in her class, because she will comment on how horrible you sound. AVOID IF YOU CAN!!!!
Attendance is very mandatory in this class. She gives a lot of tough feedback on papers but in the end in not a very tough grader. You are constantly working on papers and it takes a lot of time outside of class. She is always open to helping students in need, but has very high expectations.
Very boring, horribly tough grader, hardly explains wat she wants from you on assignments. Takes forever to grade. If you have trouble submitting an assignment she will not let you know that she didn't receive said assignment.
It can be difficult to understand what the expectations for assignments, but if you go to her office hours, she will walk you through everything step-by-step. One of the kindest lecturers I've had thus far!
She was unbearable. She would say she would help you then ignore all way to try and help you in that class. Would go on for the entire class of ways to help you better your papers and research then dock you points if you followed what she said. Showed up late to class most days and was unaware of how to use the technology. DO NOT RECOMMEND AT ALL!
The honors class is a lot of work and you have to give yourself time to do it, but it is a rewarding class if you're willing to put in the work. McCue is super nice and helpful, she does a great job at explaining what she is looking for in papers. She also gave us baked goods every now and then. Sometimes, tech is lacking, but she is great.
Professor Mccue is one of the kindest and most understanding professors I've had. We had lots of time for assignments, and the workload wasn't too much to bear. She doesn't know how to use canvas very well but other than that I would definitely recommend her for 298!
She is a sweet lady and is understanding when it comes to submissions. The coursework is a little challenging and tedious. Grading is slow and feedback is brief, but she does give second chances.
DO NOT TAKE. This class is so confusing and so pointless. McCue doesn't grade AT ALL. It's the week before thanksgiving and I have one paper graded, and still no overall class grade. The work is so confusing and she doesn't explain it well. I want to fall asleep every class its actually the worst schooling experience ever.
Don't recommend. She would never grade assignment and said she'd give feedback on stuff but never once did. Posts assignments late at night when they're due before class the next day. Was always confused during class and it was hard to know what she expected on assignments. She only grades big papers and projects so you have to do good on them.
Although this professor was nice at times, she is simply a horrible teacher. She does not know how to work with technology in the slightest and it is difficult to get any actual answer on a question you ask in class. I would recommend avoiding her at all costs for ENGL295.
Professor McCue is a nice and understanding lady, but she is a very slow grader and her explanations of the assignments can be confusing. She responds to emails fairly quickly and often extends deadlines to give students plenty of time to finish assignments.
