She was the worse teacher I have ever had. She didn't explain anything, she talked down to the class like we were little kids and never answered questions. After 1.5 months she hadn't put a single grade in the gradebook so I had no choice but to drop out. She doesn't allow questions about anything before or after class and has minimal office hours.
Not a great prof, think it may have been her first year? She rushed way to fast through lecture with minimal explanation. Lecture was presented via power point and she gave little to no time for students to take notes because she would flip to the next slide too quickly. Didn't like to answer questions before or after class. Dramatic with a temper.
I am surprised to see the bad comments about her. She was very clear in her powerpoints and in what she expected us to know on the quizes. Sometimes she did talk down to the class, but most of the time we deserved it. I never even picked up the textbook, she does all her homework online and has clear slides about the material.
She is quite knowledgeable, friendly, and understanding. She expects maturity from her students, so she has a low tolerance for talking in class. She uses a PowerPoint to present the information, but she speeds through it, assuming that everyone just prints the power points for notes. She isn't very organized. She returns assignments late, never posts grades, and she rarely returns an email. If you're a student who has a lot of questions or needs help a lot, forget her.
Dr Petesch did a good job teaching our lab class, I learned a lot about chemistry and working in a lab, which was my goal. The one negative was that a few assignments were turned back late.
I took Dr. K as a hybrid class all online except Fridays and I enjoyed her teaching. She gave many extra credit opportunities and was willing to go over any questions in class. she is young so still is enthusiastic to teach, which is nice. although yes sometimes yelled at the class but with it was well deserved for some students... GOOD INSRUCTOR!
Gives Powerpoint lectures, which you can print ahead of time.Talks extremely fast. She missed 2 days of class and was 15+min late 3times so we ended up getting way behind. Never returned HW or exams so you didn't know what to study for.Exams were long and hard to complete. Very helpful in office hours & lab.Dramatic temper. I do not recommend!
Kristine is a very intelligent person, and truly cares about teaching in my opinion. She was always prepared to help me understand concepts when I asked her personally. The only thing she struggles with is returning papersgrades in a timely manner. Her tests can also be pretty hard. She was late for things occasionally too.
She was late to class several times. She has a hair trigger temper. Doesn't grade anything on time so you don't know where you stand in the class. Surprisingly she is very helpful if you go into her office hours.
The most difficult-est-est-est-est class i ever had. Exams are freaking hard and she rushed all the way.
Lectures are hard to understand and she takes points off on homework for the smallest things. Has no rubric for lab reports so you only have an example lab report to go off of. If you pass, it will most likely not be with a good grade.
I took chem 121 in 2013. Dr Kristine was a very amazing teacher. She is very helpful- always ready to help during her office hour. Although some students have commented on her classroom management style, it seemed that some students just rudely talk sometimes over their teachers. I felt that she really wanted us to be successful.
Good lecturer and very helpful. She takes a while to return work and is a tough grader. She gives lots of extra-credit work through the class (I can think of at least 5 different opportunities) which really adds up at the end.
I failed then retook her because she really CARES. She's a tough grader and sometimes the class seems rushed but she has a lot to teach in a short time. Her lectures are pretty informative and she posts them online so you can even review them before she goes over it. Takes awhile to get old work back but she has practice problems I highly reccomend
Terrible "Teacher" she is a fan of death by power points. Never responds to emails, and doesn't explain anything.
Gives every chance to get at least partially credit ifor you make the effort. Make sure you answer all her questions and you will get points even if you answered wrong. Helps to understand what you need work on.
I really liked Kristine! All of the coursework was very straight-forward as she detailed what she needed in each assignment. Of course, she can be quite specific when grading tests, but it's all pretty fair. Everything was very well-structured and her lectures are great in terms of giving you exactly what you need to pass her tests.
Very vague when she tells you what will be expected of the lab reports. As well as the material that will be on quiz and test. She does not explain things very well in her lectures so you will have to read textbook
The worst teacher I have ever taken. Many students in my class are failing this quarter. She is such a tough grader and impossible to get a good grade.
This class was a lot harder then it needed to be for an intro to chemistry class. She expected us to print out everything, had to buy a printer just for this class. The amount of work she gives accompanied by what she expects you to do to study is crazy. You can tell she hasn't been a student for awhile. Get ready to learn at home by yourself .
Grading was tough and almost every topic was touched on but not very well explained. If you take this class with her make sure to study outside of class to reinforce the ideas she mentioned. Her homework was of good quality to prepare for quizzes and tests
Try to pass CHEM 121 easily? I won't recommend her!
I am an international student and this chemistry is so easy but not with her. She will do anything to fail you and she is that kind of professor that does not know what she wants. Horrible experience and I won't recommend this class to anyone.
One of the worst professor I've ever had! I don't recommend her at all.
This is a tough class. Kristine is consistent in her grading, which is pretty exacting. "Show your work" actually means "Provide a solid proof" and partial points are taken off even if you get the right answer. Lectures are organized, online materials are provided, office hours are convenient. University-bound? This is good prep.
A very hard teacher as well as grading
Kristine is a nice person overall, but a very difficult teacher. She creates her own homework packets that usually take hours to do, gives easy examples in lectures but on tests and on homework she puts 5X harder problems to solve. She is also a very tough grader as well. If it is your first time taking chemistry at college level, do not take her.
She is one of the toughest graders I have ever had from a professor, you can never get full credit on homework. The exams are given with information that hasn't been presented in class and if it was it was only talked about for one lecture slide.
no take it .
She did give out examples with her slides during the lectures but don't ever expect she can explain comprehensively. Her homework and tests are 10X harder than what she had taught. She is also a tough grader. If anyone wants to reach the lowest GPA in their lives, please take her.
Lets face it, Chem sucks and is difficult, 'like learning a new language.' What is required is practice; outside of class. With regards to Dr. Petesch: solid. I found her to be apt with lecture, easy to access (attend ALL office hours), and completely fair. Also a decent sense of humor. Attend class, do (all) practice problems, and you'll be fine.
She is terrible. Only in her own world and does not even care about her students. Her exam is way too hard compared to the lecture. You can find nothing similar from the lecture to your homework and exams. Never choose her class. Just never.
Dont take this class.
As someone who did well, but isn't particularly smart, I say this class is do-able for everyone. It's just imperative to listen attentively, take useful notes, study everyday, practice recall, and do many practice problems; if you aren't doing these basic steps, you won't do well. It is a very demanding class and she makes you work, but you learn.
While this is a very hard class, Kristine is an amazing teacher and overall person, she truly cares about her students and their success in her class. She is a very hard grader, but gives a lot of opportunity for extra credit, she is passionate about chemistry and that shows in her lectures/labs. One of my favorite professors at shoreline!
Although she has a great sense of humor, her class is very hard. Several assignments per week, 5+ pages each. Tough grader. I thought if i work hard, I'll get a decent grade. But no! Iost so much sleep and still got a C. Gives no extra credit to help your grade. Think you can get help in the office hours? If you pass that huge line, then maybe...
Kristine is accessible during BCLC and office hours. There is a lot of homework but doing the homework will help prep for the quizzes and exams. The exams are very difficult so it is important to look over the lecture slides and practice by doing the homework. She is a tough grader but as a professor, she really cares about her students.
Kristine is a very nice person, she really wants her students to succeed. I took the introductory chemistry course, but I think she made it really hard for students to get a decent grade. There are not a lot of extra credit opportunities too, so it's hard to get your grade back up again when you're struggling.
This was an interesting class, for sure. She's a very funny and nice person and you can tell she really cares, but she's EXTREMELY disorganized. We reached finals day and still hadn't received ANY of our lab grades back, an 4 of 7 labs never got graded. I never really knew what my actual grade was all quarter long due to this--had huge anxiety.
An awesome teacher!! Very good at explaining complicated things in a way that is easy to understand. She wants her students to do well and does anything that she can to help. This class is a lot of work and the tests are hard but in the end grading was extremely fair. Kristine gives extra credit and sometimes will curve grades.
Lectures were online with pratice quizzes but the exams were WAY more difficult than the practice material - rendering it pretty much useless. It's an intro course but be ready for her to blindside you with questions involving multiple step/ concepts at once. I figured being a 3.8 student (over 70 credits) that I would be fine. I barely passed.
As far as Chem131 Kristine did an awesome job teaching it. She provided many opportunities for extra credit and for homework you get to choose 5 questions total to complete for each chapter. She did not teach the lab portion of the class but was very helpful answering questions about lab work. Overall she is very approachable and easy to talk to.
Kristine is fantastic, you can tell she cares. She is wonderful about offering extra credit. For hw she had us do 5 practice problems from each chapter. BUT, if you want to succeed do more than that! I missed three days and struggled to get back on topic, but doable. I finished with an A when I got a B in gen chem. Tests are average/high difficulty
She definitely does the bare minimum and it doesn't feel like she cares much. The class is pretty straight forward but I spent the majority of the quarter self teaching and reading and rereading the textbook. She provides study guides for test, and many extra credit options. If you are good at self learning and self advocacy, you will be fine.
Caring, will help you pass the class. As an intrntional studnt it was a bit diff to follow her lectures (I took summer). Lots of group exercises done in class, helps you see wht you know/dont know. Had online office hours which were convenient. Be attentive, pay attention, and ask in class. Watch few vids online to help & practice! Exams were ok.
I have no idea how Kristine isn't higher rated. I've never had a more enthusiastic and kind hearted professor. She genuinely wants you to pass and provides you every opportunity to. She makes chemistry more enjoyable than I couldn have imagined. I will go out of my way to take her again. Do yourself a favor and take a class she teaches.
Kristine is very kind, constantly seeks out feedback and ways in which she can improve the class, and is very generous with assignments. Grades do take a while to get back, and the exams are tough, but chemistry is a tough subject and it feels good to be prepared for what's to come in future courses.
At the starting of the quarter I really enjoyed learning from Kristine, but quickly realized that her health wasn't keeping up with her work load. It's been very hard the last few weeks to stay patient with her, and the string is getting thinner, due to the fact that she hasn't updated the first exam corrections yet even though I had turned them.
Kristine is awesome. I am puzzled why her rating isn't higher. She is funny, cares a ton and gives lots of extra points for everything. She is willing to help and goes above and beyond for her students. Best teacher I had at this college. SHE DOES HER OWN LECTURES VIDEOS! No one does that anymore! Just. Awesome.
Kristines class was HARD with homework due almost every day - however I had to retake chem and this kind of structure was exactly what I needed to master it! She really cares about your success and lecture is entertaining. Goes quickly but there is a lot to cover. If you care about learning a lot take her!
Kristine is the best science teacher I've ever had! It's obvious that she genuinely loves science & wants every student to do well. Everything you need to know for tests are given to you in worksheets & ONLINE VIDEO LECTURES (extremely helpful!). There's a good amount of work, but there's a lot to learn! If you stay on top of it you'll do well!
I really dont recommend taking this class with her. She is very unorganized and gets way off topic during lectures. The homework was nice because it was learning curves online and all due at the end of the quarter. Her tests were long and difficult. Lab reports were done on worksheets and very hard to earn points on.
Alright. I loved Dr. Petesch for the first half of the quarter, just about. Granted this quarter was online, making it worse. Her lectures are very clear, weekly zoom review optional, and she's always very helpful and accessible. However BE WARNED she gets mad specific with labs. She will doc points for the littlest things so triple check!!
LOVE! Highly recommend this teacher! She has been amazing during the covid crisis. Has lots of well made, informative and sometimes even entertaining audio video lectures. Didnt think I would ever say that about a chem class! Definitely a challenging class but she is super nice and great at explaining things. Study hard & youll get a good grade!
She's friendly, but disorganized. Her answers to questions were often unclear and unhelpful. She offers extra credit opportunities on every lab, but is a harsh grader on even the smallest mistakes. She also piles a lot on students for exam weeks - each midterm week had an entire lab and over 10 lectures due in addition to the exam.
Dr. Kristine Petesch is smart and caring. Her tests are hard as is her grading. You must study at least 5 hours a day to keep up. Get a tutor. They may also find she is too challenging but they will help. You get 3-4 opportunities for extra credit. 2 extra credit points for an hour or two of your time.
Instructions for labs were unclear more often than not, and whenever I asked a question she'd respond days later and her responses never actually answered the question. Extra credit is offered in this class which is really nice. Lectures were usually vague and never really explained concepts found in homework. I would steer clear from this class.
Such a sweet professor! She actually acknowledges how our time is valuable and does not overload students with work but still ensures we learn. Very open to student suggestions and feedback. You can tell she actually cares!
For exams she WON'T let you go back in the questions after you answer the question and her reason the most ridiculous I've heard; "so students can't send questions to someone to help them". Come on! someone can do this while waiting at the question. It's already hard times, being understanding is not so hard. In all classes you can review answers.
When you ask her questions first of all it takes so long to answer that you don't even need the answer anymore and when she does answer it is NOT helpful or clear. I think she prefers to make students confused so they make a mistake and she can take points off. Some instructors unfortunately do all they can to make these times even harder.
Worst experience, tons of HW, very tough grader, almost to the point where she's looking for points to take off. Not to mention WAY too much HW as well. I understand the need for HW but this was just excessive. Along with almost weekly labs. You were never caught up. Big no to ever taking this class again/wouldn't recommend
She's hilarious! An absolutely phenomenal professor; kind, generous but makes you earn it. If you have questions, she'll write it all out, give various examples and show you references for later use. She's also very understanding about life happening. My one piece of caution though, she's a VERY tough grader. Have your work checked multiple times.
Generous with her time teaching in office hours. It is worth it to attend or watch office hours later. She will explain homework problems and how to answer them for homework if you ask. Tough grader but again generously explaining things. The workload was reasonable but you need to keep up with it.
Tough grader and be cautious about providing too much information in answers. I was marked down numerous times for information that although correct wasnt needed example: providing both name and symbol when identifying element when she only asked for name. Also likes to go off on tangents during class time, I felt like so much time was wasted.
This professor is the absolute worst one I have ever encountered. She grades so hard, it's like she is looking for points to take off. She never responds to students emails, and never answers any of the questions directly. It seems like she would rather confuse students than help. If you care about yourself, do not take this professor. Ever.
This has been the worst professor I have ever had by far. She is always looking for points to take off of assignments, and it seems as if she just doesnt want student to succeed. There was so much homework assigned, she admitted she had to lessen the workload because she couldnt keep up with the grading. Do not take her courses.
Im shocked this professor has any ratings above 2 stars. She never responds to emails. I sent about 5-6 emails to her throughout the course asking for clarification on assignments and I received 1 email back. Inexcusable. This professor is truly awful. Do not listen to the positive ratings, they must have her mixed up with someone else.
Kristine cares and wants you to succeed. There's a lot of work so make sure to keep up and ask any questions if you're confused. Email response isn't always the best but they're always willing to help during office hours. If you work hard then doing well is definitely possible. She grades hard so be through with units and work.
Kristine has clear lecture videos and assignments which makes the class very straight forward. Despite being a tough grader, she is always available through zoom office hours and after attending, you will definitely be prepared for quizzes//exams. She is also extremely open, communicative, and flexible for hardships that arises during a pandemic.
She is a loving teacher , the best teach wish could get her for my next class
As a person, Kristine is great. She's bubbly and seems to care about her students... However, she doesn't really show up to her scheduled office hours, her exams are heavy, and there is A LOT of homework/video lectures that didn't seem to help me much when it came to exam time. I felt lost a lot! If you're good at chem...take her, otherwise, don't.
Everything the other negative reviews say is all true. She IS personable and bubbly, but horribly incompetent. Class exam avgs below 60, nothing graded entire qtr. The only reason I passed is because I'm majoring in Chem and understand it well, and relied HEAVILY on the textbook instead of her lectures. Half the class ended up reporting her. AVOID.
Hard grader. Super incompetent and unorganized. She waited till the end of the quarter to grade everything. None of the lectures correlate well to the exams. I studies all night for an exam that she cancelled the next day at the beginning of the quarter. The work load was unattainable.
most unnecessarily difficult and inconsiderate teacher i have met, its an intro class first of all, also why would u put a quiz on the calendar randomly and not tell ur students about it in any way. changes things on the calendar randomly and has no ability to think about how it might affects who plan ahead. don't take if u like consistency
This professor is amazing. She helped me through a really difficult period of my life and I came out of her class with an A I never expected to get. She responds to emails quickly and helped me personally through issues I was struggling with. Such a kind and understanding and supportive teacher, would love to have her again.
worst teacher to ever grace shoreline
Shes nice and understanding, but this was unnecessarily hard for an into course. There are lectures pretty much EVERY SINGLE DAY. I worked so hard and still failed, nothing she teaches or shows will come up on exams. I felt so lost the whole time. Extremely heavy load of work along with the lectures. She once posted a assignment 2 hours before due
Grading is very tough; minor errors and spelling mistakes can lower your grade. Exams are not based on the lectures or materials provided, making them very difficult. She also posts quizzes with little notice, often just a few hours before the deadline. I spent a lot of time studying and did not expect these issues.
Great class, challenging but with a satisfying difficulty curve. If you actually do the work, practice Q's, and extra credit, everything will click. I was nervous but learned chemistry SO WELL from Dr. Petesch. Lectures are engaging and the open note exams pull 100% from the course material. Grading is tough but fair; this is college-level science!
The ADHD is STRONG in this professor. Online portions are a hot mess. She re-recorded so many lectures that she now references lectures that have long since been deleted. There is no textbook for the class, so the lectures are the only way to learn the material. Tests are long and unrealistic for an intro chemistry class. Grading is weeks late.
BRO I SWEAR THE GOD DONT EVEN TAKE HER CLASESSSS . SHE DOING NOTHING. ALWAYS LAZY TO GRADE STUDENT WORK.
Unprofessional behavior regarding international students
Nice person, not a good professor. She doesn't commit to things she says she will do, grades work last minute, what she teaches most of the time does not end up on tests. If you are someone who struggles with harder subjects like chemistry, I don't think this is a good fit. if your super organized and good at learning alone, it might be a good fit
Nice person but not good professor. No matter how hard you try it feels like you're set up to fail. What's taught in lectures are NOT on exam its usually a harder more complex question that was never taught when the lecture was basic. Long tests, most of the class didn't finish. I do NOT recommend!!!!
All I can say is if you want to truly understand Chemistry and get a good grade, do NOT take this professor. Her teaching was very disorganized and she never puts grades in the gradebook so prepare to be completely clueless to your scores. Barely shows up to office hours and does not respond to emails. She is a nice person but beware!!!
I would not recommend this teacher to anyone. I never missed a class or lab, completed all my homework and extra credit, yet she still gave me a C. Additionally, she did not even finish grading my lab activity.
I have never taken a class with a worse professor. She is completely disorganized and incompetent and will set you up for failure. She does not care either. She consistently cancelled class and office hours and would not answer emails. I easily spent over 25 hours a week on class. Her exams were far harder than any assignment/lecture.
Honestly, I don't know where to start with her. She never responds to emails, she is constantly out sick or late. She was almost 30 minutes late to our midterm. Average for the midterm was 52 for the whole class (on an OPEN NOTE exam). I don't know how she is still teaching when this has been a problem since 2022 according to other reviews. just no
I recognize that this class is challenging, but Dr. Petesch provides all the tools you need to succeed. She offers helpful audio/video lectures, a supportive learning space, and is one of the kindest professors I've had. Her tests are tough, but extra credit is available. I earned a 99% overall grade and an A+. I highly recommend her!
She's not the worst but far from great , if you want to struggle by all means take her don't say I didn't warn you ;) .
She is always working and happy to help you pass the class as long you put effort into it.
dont take this class unless you wanna get an C in your pre req class. she is slow grader. the exams its pretty hard even if you study its still gonna be hard. The questions on the exam its gonna be harder than the material it self.
Shes grading your work last minute !!!!!!!!!!!!
She's a very tough grader and not very organized. The instructions for assignments were often unclear, and the grading didn't always match what was explained. Be prepared to work hard and double-check everything. the class can feel stressful and confusing at times. just don't take it with her.
She is one of the most understanding and kindest teachers I've met. She's extremely flexible when it comes to accommodations and offers many extra credit opportunities. However along with what others are saying, if you are impatient when it comes to grades, you might not be too happy with her grading pace. She also overcomplicates topics sometimes.
To study for her exams just do the knowledge checks included at end of lecture. She sometimes has one or two questions that are extremely difficult on the test. Weekly quizzes but just make sure to watch the lectures
she is nice, but she graded the majority of everything the last day grades were due which was very irritating to not be in the loop of if i was going to even pass or not during the whole quarter. exams are extremely hard but if you do all the practice questions she provides it will help you. you will need to work hard to do well.
