She obviously loves teaching and loves chemistry. She is kind of scatterbrained, and all over the place, and makes lame jokes, but I'd rather have a teacher who loves what they do than one who doesn't. She makes the class interesting and the tests are easy if you show up and pay attention. There is a lot of homework, but it's not required.
Sligar is very smart, fun, and funny. There is some work required by you for this class so be prepared. Her method of instruction is much more interesting than a majority of the other science geeks. Take her class, come prepared, learn some chemistry, and have a little fun...not too shabby.
Sligar is very smart, fun, and funny. This class requires some work on your part, so come prepared. Her method is quite refreshing compared to some of the other science geeks. Take this class, learn some chemistry, have a little fun along the way...not too shabby.
Kristy is one of the best professors I have experienced at BSU. She is very loud and eccentric which makes lectures interesting. She simplifies things greatly so you can understand easier. She also as lots of (ungraded) homework and quizzes throughout the semester that help immensely with learning the material. LOVE her.
Such an amazing professor!! Sooo easy, it helps that she still teaches high school. Best chem teacher here at BSU
Kristy is one of the best instructors I've had my through my entire college experience. She makes hard concepts easy to understand, and she makes the class fun. Hands down best chemistry teacher at BSU. This was my second time taking the class- I actually learned from her and didn't have to be self taught. I got what I paid for. :)
Amazing teacher. Come to class, listen, take notes and you'll probably get an good grade. Quizzes every week easy though and helpful. By far one of the best teachers at BSU
It's obvious that she used to teach high school. She has a crazy amount of energy that makes a hard class bearable.
Sligar is the ONLY choice for Chem112 at BSU--the Chem Dept. needs to clone her. Centennial High lost a GREAT teacher. Dale Russel and Kristy Sligar are the only way to learn Chem
2nd time thru with the GOOD teacher this time. Completely diff course! If you show up to every class, take good notes you will do fine. She makes learning fun again. allows re-do on quizzes. responds promptly to email help (even at 1030 at night) and is ALWAYS avail to help you. Never seen an prof like this at BSU. newer prof = better courses.
Easily the best chem Prof at the university. Class is very straight forward. She lectures, gives you homework that is ungraded for you to practice with, then you have a quiz over the homework. Then you have a test which is exactly like the quizzes. Very straightforward. Does not try to trick you. Don't buy the book. You do not need it.
Took Chem 111 from Henry Charlier, DEFINITELY recommend him over Sligar. From the very first day of class she was referencing her policies from her 111 class the previous semester, and I was totally lost having never taken her before. She is very disorganized with her lecture and slides, and offers little guidance in taking notes. Very disappointed
Kristy was an AMAZING teacher for 111, but once you go on to 112 the material is too advanced for her to teach and I feel all she did was read her powerpoints to the class instead of teaching us the material. She constantly made mistakes on her tests and quizzes and our class averages were sometimes in the 20s! I love her as a person, not a teacher
Great professor. Her teaching style is great for a class that gets very difficult at the end. If you had her for 111 you will find 112 to be quite similar. If you did not have her for 111, you will still enjoy her. Don't listen to the whiners. The only way to not do well in her class is to give up.
Kristy is a great chemistry professor. She makes it pretty clear what will be covered on her exams. Most of what is on her exams is from her lectures. Go to class because you get extra credit opportunities.
Its fairly hard to not do well in her class. Go to class or you will get confused. Her optional homework mirrors her tests, which are pretty straightforward. I was worried about chemistry, but this ended up being my easiest science class that semester. Study and pay attention to lecture and you'll be fine.
I'm underwhelmed, to say the least. She made many concepts more confusing than they needed to be, as if she didn't understand them herself. I learned more from struggling through her homework (which actually was great for studying for her tests). She's a nice, enthusiastic lady, but her teaching was not up to snuff. I won't be taking her for 112.
Sligar is a awesome teacher. The lectures go by quick and they are sometimes work oriented. Its a fun atmosphere. She is there to help you. I thought it was a difficult class, but then again, chemistry is not my strength. Best chem 112 option, especially if you really need to understand and learn chemistry for future.
I had her for a chem 111 prep class. She's funny&makes learning chem fun. I didn't go to her for help often because I didn't need it for this class, but my friends who have gone to her for help often, say she's very helpful. Things I didn't understand in chem before, I understood in her class. Attendancenot mandatory, but still go everyday.
She made chem fun and much more bearable than Puvan. She does make it easy to learn and gives many quizzes, which is a positive. Helps you stay updated and following along. The only thing i didn't like was every time i asked her a question in person she seemed like i was an inconvenience to her and sort of demeaning. She teaches great and it helps.
Kristy was a high school teacher and I'm sure she was great in that capacity, but she doesn't make the grade as a college professor. She dumbs the material down so much that it becomes very confusing and does not prepare you for subsequent chem courses. She makes so many mistakes on her tests that it's a total nightmare taking them.
Kristy is super helpful and actually makes chemistry something that you can understand. In my opinion she is one of the best chemistry professors at BSU. She goes the extra mile by creating her own homework problems and works them out and posts the answers online so you can see what you did right or wrong. Great professor!
Her 111 class was a breeze. Her 112 class is a total nightmare. She makes very difficult tests, she is the only prof that makes you take the ACS, and her constant confusion about what is going on will make things that much more difficult. Puvan curves his tests, gives study guides, and doesn't require you to take the ACS.
Sligar is an excellent teacher. She's hilarious sometimes. What a nerd! Great with everyone in class, not so nice one on one. If you go to her for help, she barely helps and she acts like your stupid. She offers homework that is ungraded but very helpful practice. Highly recommend.
I hate chemistry, but Kristy is amazing. She does everything she can to make sure students pass. She drops the lowest test score, allows a redo on each quiz, and HW is optional. Tests are mostly multiple choice. She's very animated and enthusiastic, which helped make the class much more enjoyable. She can be a little scattered at times though.
She is very nice and helpful, goes out of her way to make sure students understand. She is also very energetic and makes class entertaining. However, she is very, very disorganized and makes multiple mistakes on every test, quiz, and homework assignment. I would still recommend, just be aware and not afraid to ask her to check an answer she has.
I had no prior experience with chemistry and she covered the topics in basic, easy to understand ways. She would also provide tips and jokes to help remember some of the material. I am going to take Chem 111 from her, and I would definitely recommend her to anyone.
I regret choosing this professor. She is ridiculously hard. Her lectures are poor preparation for assigned work. The first exam, the class median was 58%. The majority is below failing and she only curved 2 points. When most of the students are failing, it is not the students who are at fault. It is the instructor.
I hated chem and failed many times. I had Sligar for 111 & 112 and everything suddenly made sense and I enjoyed chem! She makes sure everyone in the class understands what she is teaching, and if not she explains it in another way & gives great examples until you get it. Go to lecture she walks through problems in detail that will be on the test.
If you are taking her for 111, do it. She really knows her stuff there and provides lots of help and amazing lectures to help you understand the stuff. But, If you are taking her for 112, DONT DO IT!! She doesnt understand what she is teaching, her grading criteria is a mess, and the tests insnely tough. My advice- never be afraid to ask for help
I would like more preparation for the exams.
Kristy came out of teaching high school not too long ago and for this reason she makes her class very doable. You learn important concepts and she doesn't waste time on things you don't need. She tells you exactly what you need to know and gives blackboard quizzes which act as self-learning checkpoint. By far my favorite chemistry teacher ever!!!
Sligar is an absolutely horrendous teacher. The first class I have ever failed in college. She assigns massive amounts of work that is worth minimal amounts of points, no study guides for exams that students fail by the dozens, and even assigned homework and quizzes during dead week, when does she think people have time to study? Awful teacher!
Her lectures are very good, but when it comes to her tests it is so confusing. She gave us a review for the final, she didnt finish the test key and most of the answers were wrong anyways. Also in class shes constantly mentioning how shes actually doing everything wrong so it is impossible to follow or trust her answers- making for unnecessary work
She had homework, participation points, daily work over material you had to teach yourself, quizzes, and confusing test format. I quit doing daily work because it was not worth the time or points. Tests were overly complicated. She was insecure about her own work and teaching so it was always a drag to go back and undo her mistakes. no study guide
Worst, most confusing teacher ever. Tons of busy work. All over the place and no structure. The worst part is that practicing her homework sucks because you put a ton of time in and then her answers are wrong & you don't know that until you ask her so it's really confusing. She makes a joke out of being wrong all of the time but it isn't funny.
Do well on the tests and quizzes because it is a HEAVILY weighted part of your final grade (she drops the lowest score). if you did her blackboard homework (not masteringchemistry) and did well on the quizzes your test scores should be higher because her test are a reflection of those assignments. She is disorganized but overall I liked her.
I had never taken chemistry in my life, so saying I was nervous to take Chem111 is an understatement. Professor Sligar really dumbed the material down for people like me. Homework was not required, though working through it helped prepare me for the tests like no other way could. I can happily say I passed both 111 and 112, & actually like chem!
Chem 111 is a joke if you have taken any chemistry class before. You get 3 tries on each quiz and there is extra credit on each test. You can use notes on the test. You only have to do some of the homeworks and reviews she gives you.
Some say all over the place, she's human, she makes mistakes in class. It's like getting a class from your ridiculously smart and hilarious friend. She gives you EVERY opportunity to get an excellent grade, extra credit, always available for questions. You can bring a cheat sheet to class. Make sure you do and understand the homework, you'll pass.
I never took a chem class before this and the class descriptions and her emails before class made it sound like you need some chem experience before taking this class. You really don't, the class starts from the basics of chem, so I believe you can ignore those warnings. Do daily homeworks. Multiple choice tests. Not too difficult.
I had never taken a chemistry class until I had her and she made it easy for me to understand. I did go to every lecture but just by doing that and listening it was fairly easy.
She is so great! Learned so much from her lectures. They were entertaining as well. Strongly recommend attending class to get the most out of this course.
Best chemistry teacher I've had at Boise State. I've taken this class before and failed, but with this teacher everything suddenly made sense. She breaks it down and makes it so everyone can understand the concepts. The best part was she gives you study guides and lets you use a cheat sheet to write down important info you need for the tests.
If you go to class every single time you will pass with flying colors. She is the best! I didn't open the book once and got a 98! I haven't ever taken chem before. I had to work hard and spend hours in the CIC but it is a super interesting subject.
Sligar has a very real superiority complex. She does not make herself approachable and she has a tendency to be facetious, short, and disrespectful. I've seen and heard her ridicule students and she seems to actively avoid holding office hours. I would recommend choosing someone else if you can.
She makes way too many corny jokes and does not even come close to helping you prepare for a test and the material on the test has questions that are not taught during lecture. It is extremely difficult to keep up with ALEKS and it never aligns very well. Would not recommend.
She's a great teacher and her tests are pretty easy, however the final exam is hard. Expect to get around 20 points below what you normally get on tests on it. She offers extra credit regularly and the class is graded on either 3 tests and the final or 2 tests and your quiz average, so if you're a good test taker don't even waste time on the quizes
This is by far the hardest class I have ever taken. Tests are extremely hard, even when you think you did very well the grade is probably the opposite. She's very funny and tries to be engaging.
Sligar truly believes she is mightier than thou. She's demeaning to students. Acts as though she's still teaching in a high school environment, when in reality it's to a lecture hall of 200 students. Once threw a marker at a student because she described him as "obnoxious". Many of my peers dropped out, not due to their ability, but because of her.
Krisy was a good professor overall. She was always extremely prepared, the homework was very manageable as it was definitely not too much or too little. The only difficulty is how organized she is. Everything starts off organized but quickly goes down hill to where it is a little harder to keep up with whats due. She does admit this however.
Sligar was all over the place in her lectures and made it extremely hard to follow. She had so many mistakes, she laughs about it like it's okay. Some of her test questions that have been in rotation for years actually had no correct answer. Sligar was unapproachable and made me feel stupid for asking her questions. She actually almost made me cry.
she is miracle whip. Some people dont like it, and some people are just gross. Snobbish, Disorganized, and the schedule changed weekly. Grades were micromanaged (daily work on ALEKS, quizzes, homework, even attendance had work). Its virtually an online course (haha puns). Time 4 the good things, up ran out of room, sorry (i'm not actually sorry)
Imagine having an ADHD child that is slightly on the spectrum so that they were able to obtain the prerequisites to be a teacher and you have her. Homework is overbearing and next to useless, quizzes fly left and right, she makes jokes about stuff being wrong and she's wrong all the time, and she is the most unorganized professor I've ever seen.
If you attend ALL classes and take good notes, there is no reason you shouldn't have an A in the class. She gives multiple chances to do well on the quizes, her lectures really help you understand the material really well. She responds very quickly if you email with a question. She's funny, and has funny ways to remember concepts.
She's extremely unorganized and has to correct her own teaching material in the middle of class. She admitted that a lot of her power-points were from when she taught high school chemistry. It was really hard to follow her lectures, but she did eventually write down useful stuff on the whiteboard. The online ALEKS homework is why I learned at all.
As many other's have said, Kristine is very unorganized. The lecture and accompanying slides were way too scattered to be useful. She assigned extra work to be done that did not help me learn the material, and just ended up being an unproductive, and inefficient use of time. The only thing that really helped was reading the book and ALEKS.
She never was available to help students thoroughly. I always felt like a pest when approaching her, so I felt like it was more my fault for not knowing the material. She was very difficult to follow during lectures and sometimes when on bunny trails to the point where i sometimes didn't know at all what she was talking about.
I took this class during the summer and did incredibly well; I finished with a 98% in the class. The smaller classrooms and more one-on-one interaction did wonders I think. Clear lectures, reasonable exams, approachable. I loved taking it with her because she made the topics easy to understand. It's Chemistry; you'll definitely work for your grade
I really wanted to like this class, but withdrew. Sligar is passionate and good at explaining specific concepts, but her disorganization made me crazy. I spent more time chasing assignments and deciphering her recycled instructions & materials than learning. Lots of quizzes, not enough time to complete tests. I need to start over with someone else.
I took CHEM101 this year and this has been the most stressful class I have ever been in. 1. She doesn't teach the material on the test. 2. She knows she doesn't have time to teach but still continues to put it on quizzes and exams. 3. She's a funny person but overall hate her teaching and her as a teacher.
She's all over the place and is very confusing. I've taken chem before and did really well but I transferred schools and it didn't transfer over so I had to retake it and she honestly teaches things so confusingly and its a 101 class and she goes at a 111 class.
Never have I so passionately disliked a class. In high school I loved chemistry and really understood it, but taking Sligar's class has been the worst thing this semester. She is extremely rude to students, very unorganized, and there is a test every other week that covers a ton of information. I definitely do not recommend taking her.
Professor Sligar is a great teacher! I really enjoyed her teaching style and that she sets her students up for success. She has really great examples in her lecturing and she is super funny too. If you do you homework, show up to class and actually listen to the lecture, then there is no way you can't do well!!
350 words are not enough to describe this professor. She's unorganized, she's always wrong and corrects herself during class, she constantly changes the dates on the class calendar so you're never really sure when the quizzes are due until it's too late. I'm making sure that when I retake chemistry next semester, I'm picking a different professor
Kristine Sligar makes learning chemistry fun! She's really funny and really approachable. She really explains things well and is an overall great prof.
I would not recommend this teacher at all unless you already feel strong in chem. Trying to learn within her disorganized, inconsistent class structure is super stressful. Timed tests every other week, many quizzes and confusing instructions make an already tough subject unnecessarily harder. It felt impossible to work smarter not harder with her.
Gives extra credit but doesn't specify where to submit them (will not accept electronic submissions). Talks super fast in lectures, she ends up confusing herself and will confuse you. Gives you homework and practice tests, but the tests don't contain the material she gave you to study from.
Often received "google it" as answer whenever someone asked for assistance on concepts/homework. Seemed to get annoyed with students easily when we asked for additional help/clarification. Chem is not easy and this professor did not foster my learning near what I expected.
She was one of the most disorganized teachers Ive had, and this was my first time ever taking a chem class so that sucked. Supper scatter brained, and didnt really know what she was doing half the time. I sure know my class had no idea what was going on a lot. I had to teach myself 85% off the material outside of class to understand it.
Worst professor I have ever had. She was awful at explaining the material, gave a ton of homework, and tested the class on concepts we had hardly covered. During the final, she gave us a separate test on top of the final. My roommate, who was in a higher level gen chem class, said her class didn't cover a lot of what we were expected to learn.
Tests are nothing like the practice tests, and she will not grade on a curve even when the class average is very low. She can be very unfair with grading and can be super unorganized, which makes the information presented very hard to understand.
Even though it's only chem 101 I definitely had to work for it. She doesn't cover all material in her lectures for tests and isn't very available to students outside of the classroom. She's very unorganized and all over the place. She can be pretty funny at times though.
She is the worst professor that I have ever had. Study guides are nothing like the tests. She is very unorganized and did not have a clear grasp on this course. Do not recommend.
She is a very poor teacher, she didn't seem to have any sort of grasp on the concepts in class and made the information impossible to understand. Definitely the worst professor I have ever had. I feel like being in her class makes me understand chemistry less. Do yourself a favor and don't take this professor. Even her answer keys were incorrect.
She is really all over the place. She makes things harder to understand than they are. Khan Academy was my best friend this semester. She tried to make it fun with metaphors and such, but I couldnt focus because she kept switching things around so often.
Her workload she gives you is ridiculous; a test every 2 weeks, a quiz every week you don't have a test, a written homework assignment to turn in every week and on top of all that you have Alex topic goals to achieve basically every 3-4 days. A 3 credit class with a workload of 2 classes by itself. Difficult to schedule things with in general.
She's a great, quirky teacher that makes learning Chem fun! I am in her 101 class, and there is a lot of homework each week (paper work, aleks, and quizzes), and there are tests every two weeks, but all of the homework/quizzes definitely help with what's on the test. She is good at getting back to you via email. Lots of LA sessions available.
Endless homework and quizzes (which she loses) and Aleks work while you're trying to prepare for a test. Shes scatter-brained and disorganized. Gives wrong answers to the practice tests/HW. She doesn't explain things well. I've had to spend all of my time in the tutor lab learning the subjects and information because she's terrible at teaching.
She's a former high school teacher, and acts like one. She is not a respectable person, and makes class difficult not for the content but due to her extraordinary incompetency. She hasn't learned chemistry beyond the high school level herself. Boise State should be strongly urged to fire her as soon as possible, she is a parasite in the department.
Chemistry at any university is going to be a hefty workload and time consuming no matter what. I took her 5 week summer course and did great. If you do all the homework and quizzes, you'll be fine for the tests. The quizzes aren't necessary to take, but if your quiz average is high, it will take the place of your worst test grade, so take advantage
Really energetic; actually wants students to succeed. Prepare for a ton of homework! Chemistry is not easy, which she knows, so she assigns a TON of material to help you TOTALLY understand. I never took H.S. Chem, but did all the homework & was never lost. She returns H.W. w/ good feedback. Go to lecture! She moves quickly, but info. is helpful.
Hands down worst professor I've ever had! She is so unorganized and does not cover all material to do well on a test. I'm sorry but if the class test average for every test is in the low 60's that reflects on the teacher. There has not been a single class period that she has been up teaching and a student has had to correct her. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
Horrible professor, she is all over the place during lectures and expects everyone to follow her power points which she rarely post on time. If there is another professor take them trust me.
The lectures are all over the place and don't have good connections to the course material. Her explanations are typically unhelpful and I usually need the textbook to explain the topic. ALEKS (online hw) and written hw takes A LOT of time. The class itself is fine with enough time/ effort put in, however I don't recommend the instructor.
This professor did not truly teach the class, though she may have tried her best it was not good enough. Most of the test had an average and a median below 70%. Her lectures rarely taught anything after the first two weeks and the class relied heavily on the online tool, Aleks. Take physics or geology if you can.
Sligar messes up on equations more than her students do and is not great at explaining things. Learned way more working on things on my own.
I took Kristy for Chem101 and Chem111. I did the homework, quizzes, tests, and never missed a lecture day. If you do the work and take notes, you'll be fine. She isn't that bad as these reviews. If you take Chem112, you'll be wishing you had her cause the teachers are WAY worse. I currently have a 75% in 112, and I ended her classes w/ over a 93%.
Do not take Sligar; horrible experience in her classroom. She's very unorganized, lacks empathy and compasson and is scattered.
Professor Sligar has been doing Chemistry lectures for a while now, so there is no doubt that she IS qualified. Id make note that she does a thorough and complete job of covering the course material required and goes above + beyond. We have a lot of fun in her class. She has a real funny side to her. Take this professor and this class, definitely.
Great teacher. Knowledgable, funny, quirky and cares you learn the material. Lots of homework and tests but you do get to drop a test. Overall I left the class understanding the topics a lot more.
The absolute WORST professor EVER! DO NOT TAKE ANY CLASS WITH HER! She has absolutely no respect or care in the world for her students what so ever, I don't know why she is still teaching here. Avoid at all costs.
The absolute WORST professor EVER! DO NOT TAKE ANY CLASS WITH HER! She has absolutely no respect or care in the world for her students what so ever, I don't know why she is still teaching here. Avoid at all costs.
She is an awful teacher, she doesn't care for her students . There is no wiggle room and is unwilling to help. Our most recent test had average of 56% and she only gave the option to redeem 5 points of extra credit. Her lectures are very vague and she doesn't stay on topic and will jump around. Had to see a tutor regularly because she won't help.
Very confusing syllabus hard to follow and easy to miss hard due dates. Tons of homework and lots of confusing grade manipulation at the end of the semester. If you try you will probably pass but you also probably won't know until she enters the finals grades in after the semester is over.
Sligar frequently struggles to collect and communicate her thoughts. Her lectures gradually became harder to decipher than the Navajo code. She uses wonky analogies that make meaningless concepts more confusing than they already are. This is a good prof to take if you enjoy listening to incomprehensible abstract thinking. Have fun!
Let me start by saying YIKES. She knows her material, but teaches so fast that she often messes up and students frequently correct her. She assigns a ton of homework with a very small time frame to finish. I relied on ALEKS and Youtube to teach me her material and that is the only way I passed this class. If you take her class, good luck Charlie...
In the beginning I felt this professor was quirky and nice & after the first 2 weeks her attitude quickly shifted. She loves to say no question is stupid but, if you ask her a question she will make you feel like it was a stupid question! I would never ask questions out of fear of being humiliated. Watched her make many students feel that way.
Great teacher! Introduces each chapter and most of the lessons. The rest is up to us student to ACTUALLY read the text that is assigned. She tries her best to trick students into practicing the material by assigning chunks of hw because she knows no one is reading the text. Just keep up with the posted calendar and you will pass the course.
Sligar is a great professor and misunderstood. Chemistry is a hard topic and therefore practicing is necessary. Keeping up to date with attending her lectures, ALEKS assignments, and homework will only benefit you. She gives you a lot of work but also opportunities to retake quizzes. Her class is engaging because she uses the Reef app which is fun!
She is not the best professor to be honest. Does not act like she cares about her students. She takes so long to grade things and is so confusing when explaining instructions. Her way of grading makes no sense. She is super sarcastic and rude.
She doesn't think that her students are taking any other classes. we have 2-3 online hw's, 1-2 quizzes that she will change the dates and have due the same day as tests & 1 written hw due each week. the tests are impossibly long and the avg is always in the 60s. she is rude in emails and person, and will put things on quizzes and hw not taught.
She is very knowledgeable and her passion for chemistry is evident. However, her teaching style is something that did not provide a conducive learning environment. The way she explained things was all over the place. She would jump ahead and then back on different topics and it was very difficult to follow along/notes. Reasonable amount of homework
For a chem class its really not that hard. Show up to class and work on your aleks while she lectures and youll be fine. Tests are easy compared to the rest of the class. When people say they dont like her its because they dont like chemistry.
Literally so terrible. Professor Sligar is rude, sarcastic and doesn't act like she cares one bit about her students. She is horrible with giving instructions and explaining things. I think her directions were more confusing than chemistry itself. You can't even ask her a simple question without her treating you like you are an idiot.
I think taking this class and this prof was detrimental to my learning. everything was confusing at best and nonsense at worst. only one lecture out of the 30 lectures were good.
So I got an A in the class so its not impossible. Yes, you do have lots of homework but its chem. Sligars lectures are enjoyable because she is so passionate. She does her best to include everyone in participation. She offers extra credit section on almost all her tests. I didnt use the textbook, but I found aleks and study guides helpful.
Sligar is the most difficult professor I have ever had to take. She won't answer questions before a quiz. She is not clear on specific things. Is kind of rude in explaining if you are unsure about things.
Kristy Sligar is... interesting.. in a word. Her lectures seemed very disorganized and she was very visibly rude to students many times throughout the semester. She was very eccentric. She was very intelligent and passionate about chemistry, but this course was made difficult due to the strange lectures and hard exams.
I really don't understand the dislike Sligar gets. She's been THE MOST accessible instructor I've had thus far. She goes above and beyond to help you succeed. Do the homework, it will SAVE you on exams. CIC is a waste of time when you can go right to the source. She's amazing. I'd definitely take her again.
She's knowledgeable, practices many examples to make you confident in what you're doing, is funny and personable. Show up to class and participate in the reef questions and you'll be prepared for homework and quizzes which are vital for exams.
You are required to use Knewton and do assignments on this website to pass the class. Knewton assignments are hard and what she lectures on is only about 1% of the actual assignment. She teaches the bare minimum of Knewton and it can take up to hours to finish. If you are gonna outsource you class HW at least teach what is on Knewton
Is a horrible lecturer. She makes 0 sense and jumps around and expects you to know the answers & assumes we know the topic. everyday there is something due. Test is hard and not similar to homework. Class is harder than it should be. Youtube is a better teacher. She goes too fast at lecturing and teaches new topics at end of class. Horrible!!!!!
She is the worst professor by far. Her lectures are unorganized and don't line up with homework or quizzes! Don't expect any help from her outside of the classroom. If you need help on the homework, she'll tell you to contact the program instead of her. Her tests are not based off of her lectures or the homework. She shouldn't be a chem prof!!!!!!
I'd give Sligar a zero if I could. All over the place, not great at teaching the material. Homework through Knewton doesn't match up with lectures. Tests don't reflect what is reached. Sligar is not a good professor!
I took Sligar for Chem 111. She is a nice person and tries her best but sometimes she can be all over the board and unclear in her explanations. I did good on hw and went LA sessions but failed everyone of her tests because they made no sense to me. I would not take her again.
She is super spunky and interactive in class, and makes learning chem a lot easier by the way she sets it up. She has it structured very well but there is lots of quizzes( which are open), homework, and participation points. She lets you drop an exam and use your quiz average instead which is awesome. She just wants you to be successful!
too many assignments. has high expectations. tests are hard. her lectures aren't clear. would not recommend.
Yeah, probably the worst professor I have ever had. Her emails back are passive-aggressive and she does not seem to care for students' success in this course. She makes absolutely no sense in her lectures, and her expectations of the course are all over the place and unclear. I am very disappointed that the university has allowed this to go on.
I would not take her class ever again. There is about two homework due every week, one online and one written. Her lectures are very all over the place and it makes it hard to focus and try and do well. I went to as many LA sessions as I could and I still struggled. If you can take another teacher please do!! She also has really hard test.
If there is any other professor other than Sligar, I would take them. The curriculum that's taught isn't super hard but Sligar made this class extremely hard to learn because of her strict coursework and inability to be lenient. She wasn't flexible at all when classes were put online proving she only cares about the coursework and not the students.
Worst professor ever. Was not lenient at all. Her transition to online was bad and classwork was doubled. Doesnt care about students. Unorganized and doesnt really lecture. Youll be spending hours just trying to finish one part of an assignment. Test not representative of what learned. You will suffer In her class. Dont take her.
Genuinely one of the worst teachers. She made me take a test while having just got a concussion (with a doctors note!), threatening to give me a zero if not. You spend HOURS and HOURS of time on her homework every week, incredible amount of busy work, and still have to self teach. If you try to ask her for help she will turn you away. Heartless!!!!
I would recommend any other Chem Professor over Sligar. I can not believe she is still teaching at BSU. Her class material should be easy to learn, but her tests never match the lecture material, I got my first B ever in her class! Her lectures make absolutely no sense, and she assigns enough pointless homework and quizzes for 5 classes-DO NOT TAKE
Prof. Sligar is extremely scatterbrained, and her lectures never made sense. She often gave rude responses to students that were brave enough to ask questions in class. Her grading system was extremely confusing as she had Knewton assignments, written homework, and quizzes on top of exams. Her Blackboard site was incredibly disorganized as well.
Sligar is the rudest and worst prof. Ive ever had. She does not care about you or your success. Her tests are way too difficult and dont reflect class. I would transfer universities before taking her again.. her class work is so time consuming it doesnt allow you to give an ounce of attention to other classes or you. Id give her a 0 if I could.
HORRIBLE TEACHER! Assigns too much. i spent my whole semester focusing on her class& still didnt do well. I do not feel this class is representative of what a 111 chem class should be. assignments and quiz and test not alike at all. you basically have to teach yourself the material bc she is bad at lecturing. she is rude and heartless.
Shes hilarious because of how ridiculous the class is. Impossible expectations of students. Class doubled coursework after going online. Any missed assignment or lecture your grade would go down. Prof doesnt care about students. Too much stuff to do throughout week. choose another prof for chemistry. Not worth ur mental health & sanity this class
Too many assignments all due close together. Test is not similar to practice test or homeworks. Knewton isnt helpful. Teacher was not accessible nor helpful. She expected you to know everything. She is not a good lecturer.
Professor Sligar is a great instructor who really cares about making the class simple enough for everyone to understand. "You can only improve if you practice." Because of this, she does have quite a bit of homework. However, you only have to complete half of a lot of her assignments to get full credit. Show up, do your homework, and you will pass.
Gives a ridiculous number of tests/quizzes. After an emergency move to online because of COVID my grade tanked & the number of tests saved me, but she basically gives a test every other week and an in-class quiz the week in between. I had no prior chem experience and having that much stress over tests did not help me understand the material.
AVOID her at all costs. SIGNIFICANTLY worse than the other chemistry instructors. Despite the content being relatively easy, the massive amount of work she assigned combined with how disorganized she was made it enormously difficult to get a good grade on anything. Categorically a bad instructor, I can't think of any redeeming qualities.
Material isn't too hard to understand but her class is so disorganized. She was a high school teacher before and her lectures are fun to listen to. But she has a lot of homework assignments online on newton and some stuff that is due in class. Her blackboard is a mess so good organization skills are a must if you want to pass her class.
She's a horrible teacher and condescending. She doesn't provide help or assistance to students when they don't understand topics. Too many assignments and quizzes to do weekly. Her tests are hard. If I could do this semester over I would do it with another teacher and one who can actually teach, is organized, and helps their students to succeed.
Professor Sligar is a good professor however I think that she is more focused on catching those who cheated rather than actually teaching. She does have homework due about every other day and quizzes weekly- and activities- that are nothing like the test. Also knewton doesn't help, so you have to go to lecture. She is a confusing lecture professor
Overall, Professor Sligar really knows her stuff. She's knowledgeable, quite organized, and she gives students lots of chances to make up missed questions. But be ready for A LOT of work, sometime unrealistic amounts of it (Aleks, quizzes, activities, tests, homework) each week. If you miss something one week, you'll really feel behind. Dont slack!
Kristy is way too focused on the history of chemistry rather than the math behind it. It's extremely excessive and occupies way to much of the lecture. The class is not that difficult, but you have to show up to lectures to have any understanding as to what's going on.
She used to be a high school teacher for chemistry so she keeps the classes entertaining. She's a little spaz but it adds to her appeal. If you've got ADD or ADHD, definitely take her. She does all the things that help keep our brains tuned in. Tests suck. They take about 4 hours to do and are tedious for not a ton of questions. Only 4 before final
avoid this teacher like the plague. they assign too many homeworks, quizzes and assignments. you basically have to teach yourself the content because the teacher goes all over the place without explaining why. this teacher isn't nice when you ask for help. find yourself another chem teacher. and save your sanity for the semester.
Don't take CHEM101 with Prof. Sligar!! Her grading system is very confusing and the material she teaches doesn't show up on the Knowledge checks. She gives a crazy amount of homework every week so be prepared to spend hours on the class. She does respond fast to emails, but is very rude. Save yourself the stress y'all, pick a different professor!!
The way Kristine's canvas is set up is just all over the place and bounces around during lectures where she is not really clear. Once you get to Knowledge Checks, not only are they hard examples, but they do not make sense and just half of the time I have spent on her class has been technical. Just try your best not to take her, she is NOT great.
I really do not think she understands that if people cheat they will pay for it in the next class they take. I think she thinks she is teaching Jr. high school kids. Lectures are torture unless you love hearing "umm" every other word. More work for a 3 unit class than I have in two 4 unit classes combined. Can't wait to never take her again.
Worst class in my entire 4 year college career. More work in a 100 level Chemistry course than all 4 of my 400 level STEM courses combined this semester. Every 2 weeks there is a take-home test that takes 5-6 hours of work, and each question you get wrong she makes you do a 50+ practice problems on that topic or you receive a 0 for the question.
Do not take chemistry with this professor!!! HORRIBLE. Extreme amounts of homework. Quiz every week that never makes any sense and weighs your grade down. Then just to make things even better there are knowledge checks every few weeks that take 3+ hours. These knowledge checks make no sense and include nothing you learn in class at all.
Prof Sligar is not very electronically savvy, which is difficult when she provides zoom sessions. If you can't make it in person she provides a zoom, however doesn't pay attention to it and doesn't care about online students. Her quizzes are hard and her Knowledge Checks take immense amounts of time and are confusing. Lots of homework.
This is a difficult class. You have to show up to lectures on zoom or in person to get a better understanding. Shes a little strange and can be a little all over the place, but shes a good teacher. Do the homework, get help with assignments and youll do good. One thing she does that is great is that she offers chances to make up points on tests.
Worst professor I have had. She makes the whole learning process so much more difficult than what it needs to be and if you run into an issue, it is a pain to solve. She knows chemistry but doesn't know how to teach in an effective manner. I was tutored by upper division chem majors and they were confused to why she was teaching what she was.
Do not take a class from her, I repeat, do not take a class from her! Her exams are so confusing! This was a 101 level class but there was material in it that my friend in a 400 level chem class hadn't learned yet. This was more difficult and confusing then any class I have taken.
Worst class Ive ever taken by far. Online Knewton assignments do little to prepare for the Knowledge Check, which is a glorified exam. 3 Knewtons, 1 activity, and 1 quiz, per week. KC every 3. Grading is tough, and when there was a problem, Sligar did little to help resolve it. Entry level class that single handedly ruined my first semester.
What can I say about Kristine that hasn't already been said. What a wonderful lady that gets off on having her students complete 4 hours tests that make me want to cry. Her lectures are boring, ill-prepared and make me want to change my major :) Get ready to hear her cuss out of frustration because much like this whole class the lectures are a mess
This was a 101 class and I have never had so much difficulty. The tests took me 4-6 hours to complete, homework and quizzes are nothing like the test questions, her lectures are engaging but do not prepare you for the test. Her protocols for tests and the final are extremely complicated and confusing.
I took this class this semester, and it was definitely my hardest class. Her lectures are engaging but typically do not help you. She has slide shows that do not help you on the test and her Knowledge checks would typically take me 4-6 hours. I would not recommend taking her.
I would avoid this Professor at all costs. Tons and tons of homework with extra work on top of your already enormous workload. If you so take this course be prepared to spend at least 40 hours a week studying. Good luck!
Her Lectures are easy to pay attention to but her notes and teaching style are all over the place making it impossible to even learn anything you need.
The teacher really fails to connect with the students. If you have any problems that appear in life be prepared to tolerate them (including Covid) she sucks at working with students for anything. I had my grandma (help raised me) pass away and she wouldnt let me make up a quiz from the first week of class, that was the day my grandma passed.
SHE'S SO RUDE. you will not understand her class. lots of homework. one of the worst professors I ever had. Her response to the email is terrible. I always give my professors good reviews this is my first time writing a bad review for a professor because she deserves the worst review. tutoring section can't help u because they don't have the answe
This was possibly the most stressful class I've ever taken. She is terrible at responding to emails and is almost never accessible outside of class. My class was full online and she had no office hours which left me confused most of the time. She assigns a problem set and a quiz every week on Saturday preventing me from enjoying my weekends.
A little worried for this course seeing the overwhelming amount of bad reviews but I actually enjoyed this class. Sligar gives MANY opportunities to receive good grades in her class and you really get what you put in. There is a good amount of homework I won't lie and confusing grading for the exams but worth it in my opinion.
Grading system is a disaster. I went from having a 91% in the last week of class to having an 83% after the final. To make it simpler there was a final and then another test. Would not recommend.
I have subitted a request to the Administrative faculty to have this teacher reviewed and subsequently fired. I have learned nothing, except that I am wasting my money in College, and Honors no less.
The amount of weekly work is ridiculous and she made it very difficult to succeed. The assignments, quizzes, homework, exams, redo's are all incredibly overcomplicated and everyone in my class agreed. I spent insane amounts of time completing her exams and quite frankly they made me cry many times. Take Chris Saunders, I heard he is great.
I don't often write bad reviews, but Sligar has one of the most confusing grading systems I've ever had and my grade suffered because of it. Take-home tests are extremely long and overcomplicated. I always did test make ups to keep at an A but dropped 10% after her double final. She is very arrogant of her grading system and won't make changes.
One thing is getting solid feedback on knowledge checks are terrible. Barely passed the class because of how hard it is to get any feedback. She does give a lot of opportunities to get better in tests but even those go over stuff we didnt talk about. I had to seek help from my lab teacher a lot.
-rote memorization -no leniency -more work is required than necessary -assignments are designed to be work-heavy and are extremely tedious
This class is very difficult if you do not stay on top of assignments, quizzes and readings. The professor offers a lot of material to help learn each topic but can be very vague with feedback and when asking questions. I found a chemistry tutor to be more helpful than the actual professor. Many opportunities to recieve a good grade!
Amazing professor! If you need a good grade in this class take Sligar! There is a decent amount of homework but through all of it you really learn the concept. The assignments are really easy to get good grades on. The knowledge checks are hard but she allows you to redo them. She is super nice and makes lectures really interesting!
Organization makes very little sense and is more complicated than it needs to be.
Professor Sligar is not a good lecturer, she would go extremely in-depth on the easy objectives but would skim right over the hard objectives which were the ones on our tests. If you do all the makeup work you will be fine but she is so confusing. She is also rude when asking questions and does not answer respectfully or helpfully. Do not take her.
very hard, doesn't explain anything. expects you to grasp the concepts from just watching problems being done.
Avoid this professor at all costs, she is very rude and literally is the most passive-aggressive responder ever. If you have a clarifying question, she will make it seem like it is a stupid question. If you have any tragic event occur, don't even bother asking for extensions, she will not care
Kristine is the worst professor that I have had in college. Her lectures were unhelpful. Her tests took hours to complete. Her grading process is confusing and unnecessary. You are given work on the weekends (quizzes). She was often rude to the students when questions were asked. If I could go back, I would take this class with any other teacher.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HER. Homework every single night. Tests take many hours to complete and her class is very hard to understand. Easy to fall behind in. Rarely get an A on quizzes. SO MUCH HOMEWORK. Too much for chem at beginners level.
I took this as an online course, and it wasn't awful. The professor provided a lot of videos for everything we were learning, and her own, but those were a bit scrambled at times as they were class recordings. It is very quiz and test heavy, where the quizzes take up to an hour and my longest test was 6. The tests are standard questions and frqs.
I was honestly scared to take professor Sligar after reading her reviews on here but she is actually a really good professor! Her lectures are pretty engaging and she has a lot of passion for chemistry. She is always in the CIC and is so accommodating to answer questions. KC's do take awhile but all the weekly assignments help with them.
She gives amazing lectures that are directly related to tests and quizzes. Take good notes and you will never need to study because the tests and quizzes are all online. The tests can be long and slightly difficult but that is the trade off of being able to take tests at home. She will answer emails at anytime. Always do any extra credit, it helps!
If you want to fail a class easily make sure to take this one.
Avoid this women at all cost. She does not value your time or effort, will give out useless knowledge checks that will drop your grade, YES EVEN IF YOU STUDY. This is mainly bc her directions are extremly confusing. She should not even be allowed to teach, if you value your sanity wait for a better professor to teach the course.
The coursework is heavy and byzantine. Assignments felt kafke-esque and stressful, but there were many oppurtunities to retake things. Had to dump an inordinate amount of time into this class, and not much opportunity to practice the topics you need to know. As someone who never took chemistry before, this wasn't a good experience
Do NOT take this professor. Her grading system is completely made up and she gives out these pointless knowledge checks that took me, on average, 7 hours to finish. She spent a lot of time in lectures explaining the easier concepts that everyone already understood but barely explained the difficult concepts. Not much comes out of lectures.
I would not recommend Sligar to anyone. She makes the easy stuff hard and her canvas is very disorganized. She has a lot of unnecessary knowledge checks and quizzes. Be ready to read a lot and spend a lot of time studying on your own because whatever she teaches does not make any sense at all.
You will have the option to get a good grade but be prepared to spend way too much time on the coursework. In an attempt to make unique questions you get a bunch of really odd test and assignment questions, her grading system is very fair but also very convoluted. At times the class felt more like a math class than a chemistry class. Avoid it!!
There is an unreasonable amount of work and majority is assigned on friday and saturday. I paid $50 for the knewton program, and I'm not sure other chem classes are required to use this. The "lectures" are a collection of youtube videos and reading. Knowledge checks: Written took me upwards of 7 hours. Overly complicated questions
Very heavy on homework and extremely complicated exams. She calls them "knowledge checks" and are overly complicated for absolutely zero reason. Withdrew and taking it with a different professor, I do not recommend this professor what so ever, not worth my money.
Refuses to put my grades in from the course I switched from and will only put them in if my grade "needs it." Has quiz every Saturday that gets progressively harder. This course takes up majority of my time every week with the work. Has "knowledge checks" she makes up completely random questions that make no sense as well as her thought process.
Grading was so confusing she had to post videos about how to figure out what grade you had. For us online folks, she stopped posting lecture videos so we only got Youtube videos to learn a very complicated subject. Her knowledge checks have so many grammatical errors that it was difficult to interpret what she is asking. Avoid Sligar at all costs.
This class was honestly so confusing. The grading makes absolutely no sense, it seemed impossible to get full credit. She marks off for the most minuscule things. I honestly just stopped going to class because it was easier to just teach myself the concepts. She also accused me of using Google and took points off for it once when I literally didn't
3 assignments, 1 quiz, and 1 activity in a week is too much work for a 3 credit class, and the 5 checks are convoluted and many hours long. Grades are confusing, but lectures are good. I think she tries to be nice and reasonable, but I can't empathize with someone who has collectively stolen thousands of hours from students' lives through busywork
When I started this class I was not expecting what I was getting myself into. I have always struggled with science classes ESPECIALLY chemistry but this class was nearly impossible. Professor Sligar seems like she loves to teach chemistry, BUT none of the information that she teaches makes sense. I would not recommend.
She is very fair & she tries SO hard to give you a good experience & make sure you understand the material. She supplies lots of great resources. She gives LOTS of opportunity to redo questions on quizzes & tests to earn back credit, you just have to earn the opportunity by doing extra hw. Knowledge checks SUCK. Course is a bit complex, but doable.
Get ready to be drowned in extremely difficult work with this class. There were so many assignments a week and they were difficult. The knowledge checks (exam grades) took forever and were impossible to get a good grade on. I do not recommend but she did meet with me multiple times and helped me bring up my grade a lot. Nice lady.
Professor Sligar is the best Chem professor that I have had at BSU! Her knowledge checks are meant to actually test your understanding of a topic, I do not think they were confusing as other people said. 5/5 rating, she cares a lot about your success. I was dreading Chem 101 due to withdrawing out of Chem 111 but she really is great at explaining!
She was very flexible with my work schedule for the exams. Quizzes and knowledge checks were consistent with notes and slides. Lots of resources for learning are given. Typically responds very quickly to emails. Allows many opportunities for redos and both quizzes and exams, which is helpful for learning. Super kind and understanding professor.
Her online summer courses were extremely work heavy. She had 2-3 quizzes, 4-6 assignments, and one knowledge check (a big test) every week. All told, I did 15 quizzes, 30 assignments, and 5 knowledge checks, all of which were based on an objective system which brought many grades down. Only take her for 14 week classes, and never her online ones.
Her lectures are not helpful and she jumps from powerpoint to powerpoint and doesn't provide all the slides. shes very unorganized on canvas and does a bad job at making note taking easy. She's very strict on formatting in assignments because shes too lazy to grade on her own. she gives out way too much homework for a 3 credit class.
Professor that gives an insane amount of homework that makes no sense and is basically unrelated. If you want to on chem and not your major for the entire semester take this class.
A great personality but her teaching method is not good & the workload is SO MUCH. Her grading makes no sense & is so complicated for no reason. You will have at least 3 assignments a week including a quiz. Luckily quizzes & exams are online with redos, but take FOREVER to get through. Unless you have a scheduling conflict, I would not recommend.
She is one of the most confusing teachers I have ever had. Her lectures are all over the place and I never feel like i'm prepared for her exams because they have the most random questions. She is a really nice person and responds to emails fast but I honestly don't recommend taking her!!
A lot of homework (3 assignments a week), but after her lectures, the videos, and other supporting content she provides, you should be able to finish the homework in a matter of 10-15 minutes. The assignments are great review for quizzes and tests. Multiple attempts are made available for quizzes and tests. She provides soo many learning resources.
Yes, this class is challenging, but Kristine Sligar is a great professor. You can retake every quiz and exam. This class is ALL effort. these other reviews are unfair to her
Honestly, while this class has a heavy workload, Sligar is not the problem. Chemistry is hard and so obviously there is a lot of work involved but that is not her fault. She gives every chance for you to succeed and I would easily take her classes again.
Sligar is truly an amazing teacher, contrary to what other reviews may say! She provides multiple chances for you to redo all of your quizzes and tests if you are WILLING to put in the EFFORT. Along with that she provides all the lecture slides, notes, and numerous learning resources to help make sure you succeed. Her Canvas site is very organized.
The workload was overwhelming and when asking for help she was never clear. She offered redos but the hours put into trying to complete the necessary requirements to redo assignments took an incredible amount of time. I learned more from the CIC or the videos she gave us then from her.
I like her lectures, I don't think she's for everyone but I really appreciated how much she cares about the material and how she explains things. The way the course is structured for me worked so well, I loved the ability to take the quizes and tests once and then get to retry the parts I wanted more credit on
Sligar is awful. She is poorly regarded by the other members of the chemistry department and hated by students for her excessive amounts of homework. Most of the work is handwritten and the instructions are exceedingly confusing. When I asked for extra assistance because of my mental health, she said "no", which is against university policy.
Although Sligar gives off a lot of work, she isn't as bad as she's made out to be because everything in her class can be redone to receive full credit. The work is extensive and long, her tests or "Knowledge Checks" are at least 3 hours. But, getting a good grade was important, so putting in an extensive amount of time and effort was worth it.
Deserves 0/5. I hated this class. I didn't learn from her and was constantly confused about all of her assignments. I spent 10 hours a week just trying to get all of her assignments done and even then I didn't have time to get a good grade on them. I called my aunt who was a high school teacher multiple times a week and I learned more from her.
Organization in this class borders on byzantine. The questions are long, but the main difficulty comes not from the actual material, but from the way that questions are worded or from the unnecessary steps. The lectures are mind numbingly boring, with only 15-20 minutes of each lecture devoted to new material. Good luck.
Literally never had a professor this terrible. Gave out so much homework, quizzes and exams even on dead week. So unorganized and is incorrect half the time. definitely should retire asap.
She manages to make simple material seem complex. Tons of homework; something is due almost every day, including Saturdays. Rather than getting a break for days like Labor Day, the lecture is simply online instead of in-person. Quiz and test questions are worded poorly enough to leave you with lots of 50/50's even if you know the content by heart.
Her knowledge checks are scored where getting 2/3 of credit on an objective is good enough to still get a 100; however, her grading is horrible and she is NEVER clear on what she wants. On one knowledge check I got marked for not explaining my answer enough, but on the next I got marked for explaining my answer too much. Emailing led to nothing.
This Professor's tests make absolutely no sense. The take home tests typically take me 7 hours to complete. The test is nothing like what she shows in class or on assignments. There are at least 4 assignments a week and a quiz on Saturdays. Way to much work for a 3-credit class. Wouldn't recommend Sligar's class.
Drop the activities and you get two stars. Tests are tests, and in the age of Open AI, I understand the need for overly complex quantum-theory-like-difficulty on every question type of instructions for answering test questions. But the activities are some high school stuff. Wasting your students' lives... Until then. DIFFERENT PROFESSOR. Stay away
Kristine is a great professor. Compared to other professors in the department, she is very kind & works with you as much as possible. Things are dropped & can redo almost anything. If you are actively engaged and practice problems in lecture, you will be able to understand the material. Exams can be tough and can take time but able 2 use resources
Worst Professor at BSU, too much homework during the week so it's hard to plan that around other classes. Her knowledge checks take too long and there is one the same week as the final as well. All she did during her lectures was read from the slides.
whatever you do, do not listen to any of the positive reviews for this professor. I DO NOT recommend this professor at all. If you have literally any other option other than sligar, TAKE THEM instead!!
People are pretty harsh about Sligar. I had a hard time getting adjusted to her class because her grading is confusing for the exams, but you can do corrections to get a 100% if you get enough credit on your first attempt. She always responds to emails fast and made videos for me going through homework and grades. Going to class really helps!
Professor Sligar is a witty and caring chemistry teacher. She truly cares about her work and spends a lot of time making sure her students understand the material. I'd recommend going to class rather than observing the lectures over zoom. She works better face-to-face. Overall she gives a lot of opportunities to better your grade. Would recommend!
I went into this class thinking that all the ratings were just angry about getting a bad grade in the class, but this professor is EXTREMELY accurate to the ratings. She has 5-6 assignments per week. She is extremely weird with her grading, getting mad at not enough information and then getting mad at a lot of it. Overall I do not recommend Sligar.
do not take this professor. I have 4 finals due the same day. Knowledge checks take like 5 hours for like 12 questions. Absolutely horri
Just no. Knowledge checks every 3 weeks takes about 6 hours. Uses fake elements and hard hard questions on quiz. Never had time to correct. Spent way too much time on this class doing the bare minimum & got behind in others. DO NOT TAKE. Only good thing was optional attendance. Don't go to class- just do the hw and you'll understand just the same.
Never have I had an entry level course with such a high workload and such little payoff. Couldn't even tell you what I learned; every week was a cram for the knowledge checks that took 4-6 hours each. Quizzes and exams were poorly formatted with blank questions and answers, very uncompromising on retakes and grading. Take anyone else.
Sligar somehow talks for an hour without covering any material, you'll have to teach yourself everything. Hope you like the CIC. Knowledge checks are long and convoluted. The entire in person course is served online, might as well stay home and watch the zoom. Assignments are graded using AI software or Canvas. Avoid!
Sligar's class is tough, but engaging with the material can pay off. Knowledge checks are time-consuming, but you can redo them for full credit. Utilize resources like unstuck ai for efficient study prep to stay on top of the heavy workload.
I really enjoyed taking her Chem 111 class. This is the first chemistry class I have ever taken and I have learned so much from her. There is a lot of homework, but it is relatively easy and really helps with understanding. The tests can take a long time but they are open note and if you pay attention in lecture you are likely to pass with ease.
Try really hard to learn the way she sets up her canvas, like day one. When taking knowledge checks, look directly at how she does the problems/work and follow that exactly (she likes to take points off that often don't make sense), the semester is almost over and I am just now starting to understand her canvas and grading.
Professor Sligar is very unprofessional and truly does not seem to care whether her students pass or fail. The material of the course itself is not difficult if you study. Professor Sligar MAKES it difficult. Her tests are extremely long (3+ hours) and she's a very tough grader with no room to budge. Avoid her class at ALL COSTS.
Every week you have to do an assignment that is worth 3 points, but takes about 3 hours to do. Every 3 weeks she has a knowledge check which is like a test but takes up to 10 hours to do. The workload is not worth it considering this is a 100 level class. She is funny and teaches the material well though.
Kristine Sligar is disorganized, lacks time management, and shows little empathy for students. Her teaching style makes basic chemistry hard to grasp, and she avoids helping effectively. Emails are sassy and unhelpful, and her demeanor in class detracts from learning. Avoid her classes for your mental well-being and academic success.
There is no good professor I've heard of for CHEM111, but Sligar is one of the worst. The way the class is set up is wayyyy over-complicated, making it hard to know how you are doing in the class. She spends half of her time explaining how to complete the heavy workload, and you spend half of your time figuring out how to complete assignments.
I do not recommend this professor. There is so much work for this course. Her instructions are overly complicated. There was a large test every 3 weeks and it took me over 10+ hours to complete each one. Each time I would email a question she would be rude in her response and act like I was an inconvenience for her to reply to. Avoid if possible.
I would not recommend this professor at all, even if it is your only option. She is rude and does not care about her students. It's not that the concepts are hard but the work load amount is absurd and will take you very long to complete. When you email she makes you feel as you are an inconvenience.
Gives out lots of homework and there is a quiz due every Saturday. Her exams/tests are called knowledge checks, which on average took me six hours to do but I had talked to others who took way longer.
The workload for this class was ridiculous. Knowledge checks (One assigned every three weeks) took me at least 5 hours. A 3-credit, 100-level class should not take this much of my time. Also, the canvas was made very poorly, and there are way more grammatical and spelling errors than would be expected from a college professor.
Jesus where to even start. We spend roughly 15min a day going over the history of famous scientist despite having an exam in two days. Then she won't have enough time to finish her lecture because quote, "I want to do something I enjoy, so I'll e talking about ____ which won't be on the exam."
Probably one of the most unnecessarily difficult professors. She runs and grades her class poorly. There are way too many assignments to keep track of along with her canvas being messy. She is no help whatsoever and the knowledge checks are graded unfairly. You have to learn a whole new grading system while also learning the content. DO NOT TAKE!!!
Professor Sligar is a good teacher; however, I don't think that her teaching style is suited for a large class. I dislike her tests. They themselves aren't hard, but the way they are graded is convoluted. I am doing fine, and this is an easy class to me, but I have 2 years of chem experience. If I didn't, I would have no clue what she discusses
Take any other professor. I took this class online with some Chem knowledge already, and she does not teach the online course AT ALL! It is all YouTube videos that she links with very little tie to the exam content. She is very rude and her grading system is ridiculous and unfair. One of the exam averages was 40% and she does not curve.
This class was unnecessarily difficult for a beginning Chem class. She expects her students to complete hours and hours of homework each week. Her canvas layout and test grading system is extremely confusing. She often focuses on the simplest things in class and does not get into the more difficult subjects at all. I do not recommend this teacher.
The workload for a 3 credit 100 level class is INSANE. She is very difficult to communicate with, and is rude. I can't believe BSU is allowing this person to continue to lecture... what an embarrassment.
I took her for chem 111. She made her class extremely difficult to navigate for no reason. I never understood what we actually had to do vs what we didn't. The knowledge checks (exams) were beyond difficult for what was taught. Lectures were pointless she didn't really teach anything. She was nice but not a good prof
goes through content slow and helps out in person or email and she responds quickly to emails. the only thing is her attitude is sometimes great and sometime degrading, very annoying. she gives good opportunities for tests to get extra credit, but there is a lot of homework. tests are self explanatory if you look at her resources. grading is STRICT
Canvas page is a nightmare, the way her exams are set up are a nightmare. I don't understand why she makes everything so complicated, it's chaotic for students and I can only imagine how chaotic it must be for her/TAs to grade everything. The content itself isn't too difficult, but it feels very difficult because her teaching is very unorganized.
do NOT take this John, this was the worst class I have ever taken!!! She is actually low key a nice lady but not very forgiving when it comes to ANYTHING. I got sick during an exam, thew up she asked me to leave then gave me a 0 and no retake. LIKE BRUH I LITERALLY THREW UP, but whatever... I have to retake the course over the summer. HUGE WASTE!!!
Teaches way too many topics in one class period. Tests are way different than the practice tests/hw given for review. Her canvas page is unorganized and hard to navigate. She is honestly so rude when replying to emails.
Honestly, she was just okay. She sort of gives "high school science teacher" vibes, which is alright I guess, but she could have been better. The biggest thing for me in this class was that there were so many assignments that were optional, which is good if you want to get ahead but also very very confusing.
There is way too much work with too little reward. Each week has a portfolio assignment for the "Knowledge Checks" that are only worth 3 points but take 2+ hours for each, readings, homework, and then multiple Knewton Assignments. She barely covers all the topics in lecture and then rarely explains all of them well. Her grading is extremely harsh.
Professor Sligar is a nice lady but her class is hard. The amount of homework assigned in this class is absurd. 3-5 weekly assignments plus a weekly quiz due on saturday. There is also "knowledge checks" every 3 weeks which are really just tests. I took this class online and it was difficult. For example she assigned 4 assignments on dead week.
This teacher is dedicated, but the class is overwhelming due to the amount of information and numerous quizzes. It's best not to take another difficult class at the same time. Success in this course requires a lot of outside study I'm talking an average of 10 or more hours a week, those who received A's usually had no outside jobs or distractions.
This class made me question my whole life. Kristine should not be a teacher. She claims that she wants us to succeed but she genuinely couldn't care less about her students. She's the absolute worst chemistry teacher at Boise State, do not take this course. Even if she is your last option, take chemistry another time. Do it for your mental health.
Very rare that she isn't making some sort of mistake. Get ready to essentially teach yourself while spending hours simply trying to navigate her nonsense. A great class to learn how to deal with the incompetence of others but shameful on BSU for allowing her to continue teaching.
She is a good professor, I'm not sure why a lot of people don't think so. If you don't go to class I could see the material being hard to understand, but she explains it well in class. She gives you 3 chances to get credit for a topic on any given test. Class can be a little boring, but definitely worth going to. She is super nice and available.
DO NOT TAKE. I took Kristine's class online during the Spring semester of 2025 and I cannot stress enough how much of a nightmare it is to navigate her course material. You will need to memorize pathways like a maze to find lectures, videos, and files needed to study for the exams. The class average for her 4th exam was a 36%!!!
have never been treated so awful by a professor in my life. has many typos on her test which make answering IMPOSSIBLE. she gives options to check off objectives with pages of work b4 the test but rarely gives u a good enough grade to get it ‘complete', so u waste time. Her only feedback ever is “wrong”, which is just so encouraging!
Lectures and slides are an incoherent mess and leave you with more questions than anything. She somehow makes reasonably easy concepts incredibly hard to understand. Exams are unnecessarily long and difficult, especially for being on a 3 week basis. She will treat you like you're dumb if you have the audacity to ask a question.
Honestly, so bad. Had a good understanding of chemistry before coming, but was so confused after each lecture because she bounced around topics even in the middle of solving problems, which she would mess up and have to be corrected by a student often. Would not recommend if you plan on enjoying to learn chem.
DO NOT TAKE. i cannot stress this enough she will make your life so difficult. I have never struggled in science or with a professor at BSU until her and it has been an awful semester. try to get ANYONE else online or take in person - do not take her
GOOD LUCK WITH HER!!!!! SHE IS A NICE HUMAN BEING BUT DOES NOT TEACH SUPER WELL. GET READY FOR A LOT OF CONFUSION ON THE EXAMS (KNOWLEDGE CHECKS) HOMEWORKS, ETC......ALSO, SHE TEACHES A WEEK BEHIND THE LAB. I HAD TO LEARN AN WHOLE NEW TOPIC IN LAB AN ENTIRE WEEK BEFORE WE LEARNED IT IN LECTURE. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND.
I do not like the way this online class was organized. The Knowledge checks are very old school and there are a lot of times where I was confused with questions were asked. It's really frustrating the way things were done, and the way things were written. For example: Go see this photo on a separate webpage to solve this issue. Bad formatting.
Ppl are too hard on her and expect too much. They want the kind of teaching you get in a class w 20 ppl, not a 100+ lecture hall. Chem is a hard subject and she teaches a lot of students, so be smart and use your resources. Go to the CIC. Get a tutor. Ask questions. She can't help if you don't ask. A lot of ppl blame their own incompetency on her
Please avoid this professor for chem 101. I took this class and received a C+, while my friend is getting an A with a different professor and she has half the work. Kristine is a nice woman, but it felt like she did not care about my success and I was constantly stressed that a small mistake would lead to me failing the course.
She is the most unorganized professor I've ever had. Most homework is done on Knewton, and she adds things to it that we never learned in class, expecting you to teach it to yourself. She bounces around during lectures and struggles to focus on one thing at a time. she complains about how difficult it is to grade our work when she set the system up
I agree her organization with the course canvas page could be wayy better but there are so many opportunities to do well on the tests and there are quiz retakes and test retakes. I do recommend going to lectures but she does do zooms every class and records them to post. It isn't an easy class but doable.
I have never had a worse experience with a prof. She was not understanding at all in any way possible. I had gotten sick the the beginning of the semester decided to power though and got take her proctored exam, threw up in the lecture hall and got an automatic fail with no retake because I had already seen the exam. She mixed up my later exams too
Provides makeup opportunities for tests and quizzes with extra homework. The entire class is organized terribly and it's very difficult to find the homework needed and what you need to do to get objectives checked off. Be prepared to spend forever on assignments and even more time trying to find everything and figure it out yourself!
Same thing everyone else says. You will spend more time figuring out where things on Canvas are and actually trying to decipher what you have to do. As if the course content is not hard enough as is. DO NOT TAKE HER!
Very UNORGANIZED MATERIALS ON CANVAS. I have never struggled this much in a class, i wishhhhh i took other professors but she was unfortunately the only one left. Compared to other classes she is a very tough grader (used Gradescope for exams, a grading system i have never heard was very complicating) and VERY HOMEWORKKK HEAVYY. worse class ever
I loved chemistry in high school, but this is easily the worst class I've ever taken. You're better off watching youtube videos than going to lectures, but just know you can only do work her certain way or she won't give you any credit. If you get stuck with her for next semester, make sure to do all of the optional portfolios to stay afloat.
This class is a full-time job. Exams are brutally hard, impossible to study for, and include questions that seem to have been made up in a private meeting with higher beings. Exam averages were failing and treated as normal. Take this class if you enjoy confusion and academic trauma as a form of character development.
She is my favorite. People just expect too much on her, she is older than us so please don't expect her to be good with the technologies guys. Just figure it out and it will be easier if you understand how the Canvas. Her lecture and material in class are really useful.
IVE NEVER STRUGGLED SO MUCH IN A CLASS!!!!! And it's less bc of the content and more bc of the proffesor teaching it. Very tough on students work. Her canvas setup is like a maze. Her test are UNNECESSARY HEAVY, no remorse if you get sick! Overall DONT TAKE HER if u want to succeed. Nice in person but not teaching wise!!
