By far the most helpful teacher I've had yet. She is also nice to look at

I took her as an online teacher. The class was very easy. Her weekly quizzes are the exact questions as on the test. As an online teacher she wasn't that good. She would say she was going to do things and never do them.
I took both of her history classes back to back in order to graduate this may. I thought it was going to be the worst semester of my life cause i hate history, but this class is so easy! She does a great job teaching, and her quizes/tests are easy too!
I hate history, but she made the class fun and entertaining. Very energized in the morning. Easy quizes and tests. Highly recommended!
Very easy class as long as you follow her notes and look up what is important.
I've taken Van Baren twice so far. All her history classes follow the same simple pattern that doesn't require much/any studying. She is also a FOX!
I had to retake history and I'm soo glad that I decided to take it with her. I did soo much better because she takes time to make sure you understand everything. I also like her teaching style. There is a lot of interaction which I liked.
Very nice teacher! I recommend her to all especially if you don't like history... she makes it interesting! Quite easy. I took her for two classes and was overall quite pleased. Very friendly.
She is a fabulous teacher. Her quizzes are great. As long as you study, tests are no problem. I was never into History, now after her class I find myself very interested in the subject. She's passionate & unbelievably educated in History. She makes you work a bit, but she's very nice & VERY fair!
Easiest teacher i ever had at moraine valley. I want to nominate her for teacher of the year award.
Dont say that she's easy, teachers sure dont appreciate it when they are rated as easy. She's is not 2 easy not 2 hard, she's HAS JUST WHAT IS TAKES TO BE A PERFECT TEACHER:) Da Best!
She is awesome. Quizes and tests are very simple. Had to "read" a book for a discussion assignment, which i never did, and STILL got an A for it.
Van Baren is the nicest teachers ever. She helps you out if you're confused about somin and answers all questions. Her quizzes aren't hard, the tests just study and u'll be fine..she tells you what to study. Final is right off of the quizzes.
I couldn't stand taking her quizzes- your grade basically completely depends on if your group that your put with pays attention and is did their homework. It's not easy like everybody on this site is saying. I'm an A student and still had to work very hard. Also, there weren't enough books at the store-so for the first week students (me too) had
LOVE THIS CLASS!!
Great teacher....
she is totally ****ed up I swear to god
Fantastic teacher, you will not regret taking her.
She is a great professor. Even though I took her class online she is really helpful. I had a few questions and she responded quickly and her reply really helped. She seems very nice, but I do know she is one of the best online teachers I have had yet. She is always there to help & many online teachers are not. Take her class!!!
very helpful and easy, I don't understand how anyone could not pass. you take the quizzes online so you use your book and then the tests come straight from the quiz questions! VERY EASY and she is really helpful with whenever you need her. take her!!
Prof. Van Baren is awesome! The questions that she asks for weekly online assignments are probing and require reflection. Her outside reading requirement is an excellent idea! I learned a lot from her.
power trip teacher
very good teacher....
She is the easiest history teacher i had ever had in my whole life. She is funny, a great story teller, and the best with quizes and exams. She gives you everything and all what you have to do is to study.
Great techer took her for his 201 took lots of quizzes online i still have them if anyone needs them. Over all i think it was an ok class as far a history goes
Vanbaren is a NOT a good teacher. I just spent 17 weeks in her classroom and fell asleep in everyone. She is what you would call an adult dork. She has no idea how to keep the class interested. We had A LOT of online quizes that took FOREVER to finish. We had an in-class essay almost every class. She graduated from one of the top 5 school and sh
I took both of her history classes 101 and 201. One online and one in a classroom. She is very clear and well educated. I am happy I took her. the online quizzes on Blackboard are the Unit tests. Research paper is a touch difficult if you don't know what you are doing. Nice lady.
BORING Class. She is very nice. I got a B in the class. It felt like it was an Online Class. You had to teach your self a lot. She only goes over somethings that happend during important Battles. She is intrested in her topic and tries to make everyone get into it. I would take her agian, but maybe online.
Ill put it this way, if you want to take 12 internet test that are worth 10% of your grade take this class. the class is boring. she teaches nothing. everything you do is on your own. she doesnt go over anything on the test. at all. she isnt a good teacher at all in my opinion. take this class if you want.. good luck, hope you have a good time.
Grading Scale is off the charts horrible!!! for online class stupid discussions are weighted out to be more points than quizzes and they don't have anything to do with class which is bogus a quiz which you have 4 each unit is only worth .59% and a stupid disussion is worth 5% miss two of them grade drops down 10% already so dumb!!!
She's an awesome teacher. As long as you work hard and do the assignments, you'll have no problem. She gives you the information you need and it's your responsibility to take it and use it and succeed on the tests or not. Her lectures are awesome. She is so excited about History and she gets the students fired up about it too. She's great!
I think she is a very good teacher. She makes history interesting. I have to say that she shows her enthusiasm in her teaching which makes it interesting for her students. I would take her again without a doubt!!!
I took her online course and it was a rediculous amount of quizzes and impossible tests... And I am a straight A student. I'd stray away from her online classes...
Unless you are a history major, DONT TAKE HER online CLASS! Save yourself a lot of aggravation, this class is far too much work unless history is your passion. In my opinion, she not a good teacher. A lot of work for a self learned class. SKIP THIS ONE.
Yes Van Baren's classes are a lot of work, but this is college people! She is an awesome teacher and gives you all you need to succeed. It's your own fault if you fail because you obviously have not done the work required. I took her for HIS101 & 201 and wish I needed more history classes because I would definitely take her again. She rules!
Interesting course. Book quizes ridiculous! Would only take this course if you are planning to be a history major. Fail the final and you fail the course, regardless of your course grade. Sorry I didn't drop sooner!
I am taking her this spring(09) for HIS101 and I was wondering if she also requires you to do online quizzes like she does for her online classes. Does anyone know?
Poor teacher student communication online! Class requires more time than any other I have taken and I have taken about fifty others. Unless you are a history major, put you time to better use. History material is interesting but the quizes, tests, and online papers/correspondence, are RIDICULOUS. If U have tons of time..go for it, otherwise good luc
school screwed me didnt have a book in this class which u desperately need it! u sit through long lectures which r clear only to find out that about 15% of the lecture is on the tests n the rest r all from the book. history was my major going into this...now its not...take that for wat is worth
I dropped this class after already being enrolled for 9 weeks. It's unbelievably time consuming!! Not to mention impossible!! Her lectures have nothing to do with the tests or quizzes and they are so boring. Have fun but my suggestion is not taking her at all!~
TOO MUCH WORK. FOR HISTORY MAJORS ONLY. OTHERWISE FORGET YOUR OTHER WORK. SHE OBVIOUSLY FORGOT WE ARE NOT ALL PLANNING ON BEING HISTORY TEACHERS!!!
A very demanding teacher. Expect to do a tremendous amount of work especially for the online course. Two text books required with a lot of reading, if you don't read you'll be lost. Don't take unless you want the challenge and believe me you'll get one. Online course is ridiculous, highly recommend NOT taking!!
I think a lot of the comments with good ratings are a lie. The entire class was ridiculous and it is absolutely impossible to keep up in this class while taking other courses AND having responsibilities outside of school. I don't care how prepared you are for the tests or online tests, they are impossible. I still have nightmares.
I think a lot of the comments with good ratings are a lie. WISH I COULD REMEMBER HALF THE MATERIAL I RACED THROUGH TO TAKE THE RIDICULOUS ON LINE TESTS. HISTORY IS INTERESTING, PLENTY OF READINGS, BUT LEARNING IT IS NEXT TO IMPOSSIBLE WITH THIS ON LINE BATTLE. THERE HAS GOT TO BE A BETTER WAY TO PRESENT THIS MATERIAL AND MAKE IT MEANINGFUL. TAKE ANY OTHER HISTORY CLASS, YOU WON'T REGRET IT!
Van Baren is dedicated, enthusiastic, and passionate about history. Her expectationns are clear and reasonable. If you can't hack her class, it's time to move out of your parents' basement, get a job, and try to make a good living with your expertise at Wii.
I took a 102 class at UIC that I got an A in and never took the plastic off my book. For this class I read every chapter and used a full highlighter. The quizzes online were worded unfairly and seemed easy but upon grading were wrong. The books are wrong for an online class and so is the teacher, her outlines unhelpful. I tried so hard for nothing.
very easy grader, good teacher overall. her work load is high though, don't take her if you hate regular basis hw
Mrs.Van Baren is a tough teacher. I enjoyed her class because she is funny and has good stories. She has extremely hard tests, but gives you studies guides and is willing to review them if you email then to her. There are quzzies for every chapter. If you are a history major, then i would take her, but if you need this class take someone else
Unnecessarily hard. She focuses way too much on penalizing you if you don't cite things exactly right. I forgot to put a page number on my in-text citation, even tho it was on the reference page. That earned me a zero and the title "plagiarist."
Amazing class!! I dnt really like history so this class was easy. Sure theres alot of work but everything is easy nd can be dne at home. There were prob over 20 quizes, 4 or 5 per unit, bt they were 10q each and they were online and untimed and could be completed at home. are given like 4 weeks per unit. Tests r exactly like the study guide
Van Baren is a great teacher. Yes, you have to read the book but everything is straight forward. Easy A if you're up for the work
Great teacher! Shes very fun to listen to in class and has a lotf intresting things to talk about! Her test can be hard, but her quizes are online and open book. Also easy A if you do all her esays. You get like a 100 for jut answering an opinion question!
Easy class, lots of reading. She gives a study guide, do the study guide the test comes exactly from the study guide. You can e mail the study guide to her and she will help you if you have the wrong answers. Helpful and answers questions.
Great teacher. She knows her history. She is easy to understand and very helpful on studying for the tests. You can email her the notes you are studying and she will correct them if you are not on the right tract!! Give interesting extra credit too.
Taking her online class currently and it is a lot of work. I recommend reading the book as much as possible. The book that goes along with the course is actually very interesting. The work is never-ending, but if you make an effort to keep up with it, you'll be okay. It's a challenge to take with other classes, but not impossible!
I could not stand this teacher. I barely learned anything in this class. Her web activities seemed pointless and didn't teach me anything. You do bad, your grade goes down dramatically, and if you do good your grade goes up like half a point. Take another teacher! and if you need this for your degree, look into a different degree!
If I didnt need this class, I would have dropped it a long time ago. I am taking a hybrid course and her lectures dont teach you anything, her web activities have little to nothing to do with what your learning. Way too much work is given. She thinks this is your only class. TAKE ANOTHER TEACHER.
I took a hybrid course & it was the best option for me since History is not for me. The web activities each week are a bit irritating, but easy points if completed. The tests are fairly simple if you study properly (recommend making notecards as it's a lot of material). I never opened the book & have an A :) She's a sweet person & LOVES history.
Her lectures were very interesting but I have to agree with others about the in class assignments, they were pointless and didn't have much to do with what you were learning about. It could get a little frustrating sometimes. The class was a little hard but I still loved it, might not want to take her if you aren't interested or majoring in history
Ms Baren is one of my favourite teachers! Although I agree with others that there were a lot of work for this class, she will definitely help you if you seek help from her. Be sure that you start doing the online quiz as soon as she posted it. It is important to have a book for this class. I miss history because of her! Take her :)
Really nice teacher but very confusing online quizzes. They take 1-2 hours to complete, 10 multiple choice questions. The questions are sometimes confusing and the answers are confusing as well. Very hard to pick the right answer even when the book is right in front of you and google is open.
Best professor ever i took in Moraine valley. Quizzes are a bit hard but you got to read the book and google is helpful. If you do good on the quizzes most of the questions for the tests are from the quizzes. I def Recommend her.
covers all in short amount of time, tests are tricky, excessive point system for grading, high expectations for students, material is huge chunk of history, eye-crossing
Quiz questions are never in order and are near impossible to find unless you read each paragraph multiple times. To anyone with a learning disability; don't take the class. I was an AP student in high school despite having autism and this is way harder than any AP class I ever took due to the random nature of assignments and weird due dates.
I took online Am. His 101 and it was definitely a challenge. Make sure you buy the book, you'll need it for the test which are VERY specific! She's helpful if you ask. Not a tough grader for other assignments.
You definitely have to work for your grade. You have to buy a book to pass this class. A lot of reading, online quizzes are really hard. tests are almost the same as the objectives. Great teacher!
Interesting lectures. She knows her history. The online quizzes are not that bad. A lot of in-class points are given, so don't miss class. Very lenient on essay exam grading. She is very nice and helpful to anyone that needs it. This is a great class for people that don't like having assignments due every class. Gives a study guide for exams.
Ms. Van Baren is such a cute lady! She always has a good attitude and is clearly very excited about her field. There are a lot of online quizzes and discussion boards, but you have a *long* time to do them so that completely makes up for it. She's (for me, at least) very easy to get a hold of if I need help. Would take her again :)
IF YOU DON'T LIKE READING DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS. Van Baren is the nicest teacher ever!! I like her personality but I do not like her teaching style. The lectures get really boring and she doesn't mention stuff that shows up on the test.
Her lectures are very informative and she gives a very clear description of what she expects on essays and exams.
Prof. Van Baren has a great personality and she is very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about history. I took her hybrid class and it was an all around easy class. We have weekly web activities that take time to do, but they arent hard. If you spend time the time on your quizzes and assignments , then this class is an easy A. I would recommend her.
Prof. Van Baren is great! All her quizzes are online and can be taken on your own time. The tests are just the quizzes put together. You have 3 essay exams every semester, but she is a really easy grader. Shes super nice, I highly suggest you take her class!
She's really sweet, just do your quizzes and study for her tests and you'll be fine. we had 3 essay exams, but they're not impossible. but don't take this class if you don't like reading, because you're expect to read at least one chapter from the textbook a week, and every chapter is around 50 pages. final exam was 50 questions and was decent
Took her for an online class and it was quite enjoyable. There are quizzes and you have to write "essays" which are just 250 word discussion board posts about readings from the book and the readings are actually very interesting. My favorite was the one about witches and satanic rituals. Overall, a good, easy class.
Ive never met her in person, but I have to say her online class was okay. You have to read A LOT! She has 6 250 word discussion posts plus 2 responses, 15 chapter tests (which are super hard), and the final which has to be taken in the testing center. I have to say it was time consuming, which I expected, but its way too much reading.
Absolute worst teacher I've ever had! She is a very tough grader, nothing slips passed her. She will not accept any late assignments no matter what the circumstances are. Her assignments can be difficult, do not bother to ask her for help, she will tell you, "go to to the library or tutoring". not caring whats so ever!
Knowledgeable and knows what shes talking about. Favorite thing was she is very clear from day one about her class, which a lot of professors lack. Organized, clear grading criteria, everything on canvas. Material easy but you have to read. Reasonable and laid back. Take her you wont regret it.
I don't think I've ever in my life read for a class as much as this one. The nice thing about this class is she offers extra credit biweekly which definitely adds up. her final was not bad at all. I finished it in 12 minutes and got a 75% on it and I passed with a 97% in the class. Take it if you're willing to read and do the work.
I really liked Ms. Van Baren. She seems like she knows a lot about history. She offers plenty of extra credit. You will be required to get the book and read and complete chapter quizzes which are all taken online and everything is all posted on Canvas. Take her if you have the chance.
I loved this class so much. Theres a lot of note taking and writing, so if thats not your thing then maybe this isnt for you. I enjoyed every minute of this class! Lectures were a bit long but always interesting. A few projects here and there, and group activities were always fun! Shes very approachable and willing to help you out.
Took her class as an 8 week course, super nice and understanding. She wont Thames late work but she tends to have a majority of assignments in class only. If the class doesnt finish she makes it homework.
She makes you take essay tests as well as actaul tests, and her essay tests are based on 2 articles consisting of 20 + pages each. Her lectures are long and are very boring to listen too.
Had her for an online American history course and it was honestly awesome. She grades super quickly and gives detailed feedback on any written assignments. Although she can be a little slow when it came to responding to emails. Other than that, no complaints.
Took her for an online class and everything is so disorganized with stupid rules. It's a mess.
She is a very easy grader especially on the in class essays. She makes great study guides for the tests and 99.99% of the test is from the study guide. If you look at the study guide before each test you will do very well in this course.
Lectures are interesting and she genuinely loves what she does. She cares about her students success. Study guides arent due for points, but doing them is the best way to pass with an A as they are basically the same as the test.
14 tests-10 questions each worth 10 pts. 14 chapter questions worth 10 pts. a research project 60pts, you get helped from her and a librarian, make sure to get his help, and don't leave it last minute. the final exam is worth 60pts or 8%, ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS TEACHER TAKE HER IF YOU CAN!!!!
This professor is underrated, she's a sweetheart and cares about her students. when I explained my issues she went out of her way and graded my assignments lightly. would definitely take her again!
The most annoying class Ive ever taken. I actually was optimistic about taking a history course but this professor takes history WAYY too serious and is a tough grader when she doesnt need to be. Work load for a history class was also unnecessary and makes you listen to boring podcasts and write about it & show proof that you listen to everything
Absolutely horrible NEVER TAKE HER I spent hours doing research for a paper that took me forever to write (3 breakdowns writing it) she gave me a 0 for plagiarism then put it onto my record. Super unreasonable, started marking all my assignments less than 70%. I had to drop the class to not fail. Mind u I'm a straight-A student. STAY AWAY FROM HER!
This professor is the best. I would take her class again if I had to. The class included 14 weekly quizzes of 10 questions. 14 Podcast Reflection Assignments. 1 Research Paper, 1 research quiz and 4 Modules Primary Source Projects. It was a lot of homework, but it was managable. You should take this professor 100%. She gives a great feedback.
Prof. Van Baren is a really nice teacher! I've always enjoyed her lectures in class, and she loves giving life to the lesson. She is helpful and fair when it comes to questions, and she's understanding. You will have to read a lot for essay exams. The study guides are what's going to be on the test. If you want an A, study and you'll be fine.
She was so bad, I wanted to give her a zero. But that's not possible. So, I give her a 1.
This professor is HORRIBLE. she doesn't understand the student's situation no matter how bad, gives very long podcasts to watch and review, asks you to write a long essay every two weeks, REALLY tough grader everything has to be exact and perfect. I highly disrecommend her, if you want to pass history DONT TAKE HER.
Honestly, she is a horrible teacher! she grades tooooooo heavy, has no sympathy, and creates busywork like the podcast for her convince and then grades you low.
All we did was listen to random podcasts she assigned and then basically write a full page about it every week and she would grade as low as she possibly could. worst teacher i've had at moraine.
BEWARE! This teacher is horrible. Very boring and overall horrible teaching skills. She teaches with videos from the 90s and assigns LONG podcasts by some british guy you can barely understand. Grades everything too hard and makes this class unenjoyable. I don't know anyone who actually got a decent grade from her. WORST TEAHCER at moraine.
She makes history so exciting and fun to learn about! Make sure to read the textbook even if it's a quick skim! The lectures are pretty heavy on lecture days, but they help with the Unit Exams. The Unit study guides are almost identical to the Unit Exams. She's really passionate about her job and genuinely cares.
Her teaching method is good but you have to put the work in if you want to get a good grade. She gives a lot of quizzes and tests, essay and multiple choice. Most of the multiple choice questions are easy and directly from the reading, some are vague and confusing. You also have to do a research project. Not a class to take if you want an easy A
I loved her and I had an online class with her this semester and she was so sweet. Not a hard grader and helps you to get a better grade if she sees something is wrong or missing. Not a lot of work but everything is simple and easy to do. I enjoyed the podcast and found that the podcast would be quiz questions.
Ruined my straight A's, be careful taking this class if you care about your GPA, regardless of how much effort you may put into a paper.
His 101 class a very easy A. You have a podcast assignment and an open book quiz every week and a few papers throughout the sem. Overall she is caring and there are many extra credit assignments.
I took history 101 online and it was an easy A. As long as you do the homework every week you'll get an A. I honestly cant see how you wouldn't get an A. Its like 2 assignments every week and SO many extra credit assignments. I never used the textbook so you don't really need it.
Fun and easy professor, and her lectures are entertaining and interesting. She isn't a tough grader, but the tests are a little difficult if you don't study. Studying makes this class much easier as the tests are multiple-choice. There are also essay exams but those aren't difficult.
I loved taking her class and I wish I had it in person. She always left sweet comments under every assignment, emailed quick, and gave good feedback. Most of the assignments were podcast reflections, which I loved to do those the most out of everything. Tests were 10 questions on canvas, there's an moderately easy project, and final was cumulative.
Professor Kristine's HIS101 class can be a mixed bag. While the lectures are engaging, the tests and grading can be quite challenging. Staying on top of the weekly assignments and using tools like unstuckstudy for study prep will go a long way. Overall, it's a manageable course if you put in the work.
Each module consists of a podcast reflection, a short essay, and multiple-choice open book 10 question quiz. Very clear grader and provides great feedback. She offers an extra credit opportunity each module as well. Very kind!
Amazing professor! Best advice I can give is to stay on syllabus schedule, read the text, and do the study guides given (the quiz takes questions straight from the study guide). Try not to miss a lecture, in-class notes are very helpful. She seems like a tough grader, but just follow her instructions. I'm signed up to take her again in the spring!
This class might be tough if you're not a history person. 4 essay exams, 4 module exams, but tons of extra credit. The professor, while nice, presents material assuming we know everything, which can be awkward. Be warned: the exams increase in points as the semester goes on. If history isn't your thing, you might want to consider another course.
This professor is super sweet! as long as you complete your work and follow the criteria you will get a good grade :)
She was an amazing professor. If you're looking for a class where you won't have to write this is not it. She loves a good discussion board. If you miss class, you have to do a makeup assignment where you listen to a podcast and write about 4 different topics. You're better off going to class. But she is really sweet and understanding.
