He's a pretty good professor. I could always understand him, and it was alwasy clear as to what you had to know/study for the tests.
Lectures aren't all that great. But he's very clear on what to study, relatively good professor, and possible to get an A.
Really funny guy who was always willing to help out students. Did a good job of getting through the material and answering questions.
This professor was very helpful. He teaches us everything we need to know pretty well. if you do the homework and attend class you will do well. His tests are a little harder than other professors but you learn a lot. i recommend this professor
Great professor. Tests are difficult but his lectures are really helpful.
Burdzy is hilarious, he's a tough, good teacher that says stuff that makes everyone laugh. Very good lectures and he does a good job of covering material that will be on the tests. Midterms and the final are tough though.. Recommended!
His class was pretty tough. I've struggled a bit with the homework and exams. But he does a real good job of teaching you math. The lectures are pretty much the examples out of the book. He also has a few jokes here and there during lecture.
Very laid back style of teaching. I really enjoyed how instead of trying to sound smart by extrapolating simple concepts (like many professors do), he simplified everything in a way that made perfect sense. Prepares you well for tests, which aren't too hard. Overall great math professor.
Burdzy is awesome. His lectures are extremely clear and helpful. If you study properly, his midterms are often easier than those of other professors - they were very fair. Attend lectures, do your homework and the practice exams and you'll do well. A word of warning: the final KILLS, so study hard! Fantastic class, and I don't even like math.
Excellent Professor. Lectures were as clear as possible and his explanations for how to do the problems were easy to understand. If you do the homework and attend lecture, you will do find.
Burdzy is a great professor. He is really clear in his lectures and pretty much lectures out of the textbook. And he's funny. He does his best to help you understand the material and get a good grade in the class. Attend lecture, do practice midterms, go to office hours, and you'll do fine!
Great Teacher. He teaches very well, relating to the textbook, providing examples that will be covered in his midterm and the final exam. I would recommend Burdzy to anyone. Study his practice midterms to do well!
He is a very interesting teacher. When I first entered the class I wasn't quite sure how I felt about him but through the quarter I really grew to like him. He makes lots of whitty comments (that might possibly only be funny to enjoy math). He is always willing to explain things, even if he makes fun of you a little bit while he does it :)
One of the best professors the UW has to offer. An extremely knowledgeable teacher with a hilarious sense of humor. Workload isn't bad at all.
He is easily my favorite professor. He will always crack a joke and he explains the material in a way that i can understand it. Could be the best professor at UW.
Good teacher and knows what he's talking about. However the tests were extremely hard, the average on most of them was 50%, the class is curved though.
Good teacher, though tough. I enjoyed him, he was funny. His midterms were very hard, especially the second one. He very much liked that the average was about a 50%. Overall though, I enjoyed going to class. He was helpful with questions, only hard to understand occasionally.
Phenomenal professor! Burdzy is one of the best profs at UW. Try to get him for any math class, you won't regret it!
Burdzy is a great professor. Hes funny and interesting, and definitely knows what he is talking about. He is very clear in his explanations and works through lots of examples to supplement the reading. Awesome professor.
I had Burdzy for Math 125 and Math 394. He is very straight-forward and organized. Grading is ~3.0 median with ~10%/25%/25%/40% hw/mid1/mid2/final; answers emails; has exams graded immediately and posts grades on Catalyst that evening; always a few minutes early to class and always available for a few minutes afterwards; lectures well prepared.
Burdzy is wicked funny and often cracks funny jokes in class. He keeps his explanations crystal clear and concise. Workload is not too terrible. First midterm was easy but the second midterm was hard. If you study, you will do very well. I definitely recommend him!
I really like his class and his teaching style. In class, he spent lots of time going over examples and answering student's questions. He is a great professor with a sense of humor.
Great math professor. He's funny. He's all you want for a math teacher. It's not fun material, but he teaches it well enough for you to be interested. You should be able to do well in the class if you attend classes and quiz sections.
Very clear in his examples and interacts with the audience to keep everyone in tune. Doesn't make calculus uber fun but you certainly won't be bored in class. Study hard, go to quiz sections, do your homework and you should be fine.
He explains his topics very thoroughly. He does a lot of examples in class, which definitely helps ingrain the material into your head. His tests weren't hard, but they weren't easy. Just make sure you study, but overall, he's a great professor and definitely knows what he's doing.
Awesome teacher, he is one of few professors that actually cares if people are learning in his class and is helpful during office hours. His tests are straight forward and so is his teaching. Not easy, but very fair.
Burdzy is a great professor! I really enjoyed his lectures--for the most part they are very clear and easy to follow. He writes down almost everything he says, so if you have trouble understanding him (he has a bit of an accent) you'll be fine! His test are challenging, but fair. If you do the HW and quiz section worksheets you'll be fine.
Catchphrase: What? What? What? What? What? He's really funny if you listen to him. Class can be boring sometimes because he does the same types of lecture each time but they're very helpful. He goes over concepts as well as just doing practice problems--so you actually know what you're doing and aren't just building muscle memory.
Even though I have learned almost all of this stuff before, Burdzy had a way of making it MORE confusing for me. At times, he is funny though. His tests are WAY harder than you would imagine and I did well above average. If you have a choice, pick a different professor. Also his hand writing sucks.
Burdzy is very clear in all of his lectures, and he helped me better understand a lot of stuff I learned in high school. He begins each lecture with his signature catchphrase "Microphone test, back rows!" which got hilarious when he changed things up one day and said "front rows!" instead. Tests are hard so be sure to fully understand key concepts.
Pretty funny in class. Teaches fairly well. Tests are quite difficult, but not impossible. Overall: I enjoyed his class.
After having so many different math professors, I have to say Burdzy would be my favorite. He goes over so many examples, and is crystal clear during lecture. It was a joy going to lecture, and I really enjoyed the way he taught. The best UW has to offer. His tests were a bit difficult, but the way he taught was too good for me to even care.
Lectures are very clear, and even helped me understand many concepts I had already learned in greater detail. Tests can be difficult. Prof. Burdzy is often funny - he starts off every class with his signature statement "Microphone test, back rows!" and on some days he switches things up and says "front rows!" to see if people are paying attention.
Math 125 is an extremely difficult calculus series class. Burdzy however is totally hilarious (very dry humor) and does great lectures that include lots of examples. Unfortunately, the homework for Math 125 (standard for all teachers) is very difficult. FYI if you have Calc AP credit the first 3 weeks are easy and then difficulty skyrockets.
His lecture is very clear.
Burdzy is a great professor, highly recommend him for math 125. His teaching style is lecture on new material- which is pretty straightforward and from the book and then example problems. He is available for questions. His midterms are hard... Harder than the other professors I think. But do hw and attend quiz sections as well as practice midterms.
Amazing Professor!
I took 125 with the Burd, he's a great lecturer and he explains the material well and is charming enough to keep you listening. If you did well in AP calc, do not take 125. It's literally the same material but in a much more annoying form (because it is a weed-out course.) Good luck!
It was a great class! His Mid terms were harder than that of the other professors! I guess the difficulty was perfect to score well if you prepare well, and the difficulty kept the average low. So I guess his class is perfect! Enjoyed his class a lot
I switched into Burdzy's class after about 2 weeks and he replied to emails very quickly. Helpful with helping me figure out how to get caught up. His lectures are clear and he does a lot of example problems which help a ton. Tests are extremely hard but the average is low. Use Clue, the Math Study Center, and past exams and you'll do well!!!
He doesn't provide much additional material outside the lectures but the lectures themselves are very good and very helpful. He's clear without being too wordy. He's also got a great sense of humor which makes classtime pass a little faster. The tests are HARD. When I took 125 the average for Midterm 2 was failing. He curved it fairly though.
Math 125 wasn't very easy (and I took BC Calc in High School), but Professor Burdzy was pretty funny and made it relatively enjoyable to go to class.
Burdzy has a great sense of humor and knows how to teach this subject well. That being said, it was still a really hard class. Tests are difficult, homework gets ridiculously hard sometimes. Do lots of practice problems before the midterms!
He is great teacher ! His note is extremely useful so you should come to class more often and everything he teaches is very organized and will help you to get through the homework.
He's a pretty good teacher and all, but hes a jerk. If you ask him a question privately during office hours or after lecture he will talk to you like you're stupid, or he'll laugh at you sometimes. He's very elitist and honestly does not care for his students. Not to mention his handwriting is horrible, so make sure you sit in the front.
He is a good lecturer but the test is not that easy
His lectures are clear and informative, as he works out the problems in class instead of beforehand. However, the examples he shows in class are far easier than the homework and tests, so be prepared to spend endless hours doing homework. The tests were incredibly hard. You either got it or you didn't.
Burdzy is very knowledgeable about his field, that's not hard to see. However, he writes the hardest tests I've ever taken (my TA agreed). Plus he doesn't use Canvas and barely uses Catalyst. I suppose taking his class is a lot like taking calc in 1980... forget about online resources and old practice tests. You're on your own in this class.
Burdzy is not a good instructor. All he does is do basic practice problems all "lecture" and for some reason he's considered a great teacher for doing so. I got a 4.0 in his class, but I assure you it had nothing to do with him. Burdzy would trivialize important topics by simply implementing a "plug-and-chug" sense to his whole classroom. If you want to actually learn mathematics instead of learning how to memorize stuff, take a real instructor.
Burdzy is a little fire cracker. He is so sassy!! The class was okay, attendance isnt mandatory. Some of his lectures were very confusing and I used a lot of other resources to learn the material. His midterms are also slightly more difficult than the other professors! Overall the course as a whole was pretty good.
Overall good choice. His lectures are clear and he does a lot of practice problems which are similar to what you need for homework/exams. I recommend going to class, but its technically not mandatory. His exams are pretty hard, but fair. He's pretty entertaining and funny without getting sidetracked. I usually hate math, but Burdzy made it fine :)
His explanations are fine, but his handwritting is hard to understand. His homeworks are hard but thankfully it only consists 10% of the total score. The final is a lot more difficult than the sample final.
Made the COVID situation more difficult for students and made fun of their hardship. He thinks Polish students in his home country are better than Americans. This guy should not even teach a class or be in charge of anything related to students. He doesn't have any empathy. Avoid at all cost.
He is an absolutely horrible professor. He calls students slow, states that the questions on the midterm is, not like anything weve seen in class which makes me wonder why its on the test. If students solve problems in a way that isnt common he accuses them of cheating. He has zero sympathy or understanding. I dont know why hes a professor
He was not understanding about the COVID situation and switching to online classes. His exam problems are harder and nothing like what he is teaching in lectures. If you don't write your workings in the exam to what he wants, then he would accuse of cheating. His handwriting is not understandable at all. I would not recommend taking his class.
He was not understanding during COVID. He would call students out in class for making mistakes and practically called them dumb. Intentionally made his tests harder during COVID. He put trick questions on the tests to see who was cheating. He made some comments about how home life and covid should not effect school. Handwriting impossible to read.
Despite his COVID remarks, he was understanding when I had technical issues during a test. Lectures were clear and did a good job explaining the material. Tests were open note but to do well you had to be able to apply concepts in new ways instead of just copying from your notes. Overall a solid professor, not as bad as others are making him seem.
Teachers are supposed to help their students and not work against them, especially in a time of pandemic when we the students and our parents are extremely stressed. This guy gives horrible lectures with awful handwriting, hard exams and harsh grading. If he thinks COVID is a hoax then he shouldn't be teaching during COVID.
Makes you feel stupid when you ask a question. Cannot read his handwriting. Very boring lecturer. His exams are claimed to be "conceptual" which means the difficulty is 10x harder than anything we've ever seen on HW or in class. Doesn't care about your grade, accuses you of cheating if you solve something differently than what he does.
I highly suggest NOT taking this guy. He literally does not care about his students, and has no sympathy for the current state of things. Look up the article about him in The Daily. He makes his tests "conceptual" which means they become way more difficult and no where near something that we've ever seen. He is not approachable and is very boring.
His tests are very hard. Lectures are boring. Not recommended
Not recommended if you're suck at math
He's okay... tough grader though and his tests are pretty tricky. His lectures are boring and monotoned. I barely learned anything but it was manageable.
This class was hard, but that is just because its calculus. Burdzy made this class enjoyable. He can be monotone, but he is honestly super funny and willing to answer any questions that you have. As long as you attend office hours at least once a week and do the homework you will be fine for the quizzes. Tests are hard because time flies by.
took his class the first quarter of online classes, very monotone i agree, was understanding with technical issues when they happened during a test, but didnt care about covid. I studied a lot for this class , he likes to challenge his students, def recommend reading the textbook. wouldnt take his class again but i would say hes okay.
If you've taken CSE312, this class is mostly repeated material. 1HW/week, which takes a few hours to do. Tests are pretty reasonable, they are very similar to practice material and you get a good amount of time. No trick questions or anything, too. If you're confident in the material you'll do fine. Lectures are hard to pay attention.
Burdzy is easily in the top echelon of professors in terms of knowledge, clarity, and organization. His lectures were clear, organized, and followed a logical progression. Exams were difficult, but there were no curveballs- if you prepare a comprehensive note sheet you'll do great. He even offered some fashion advice- ask about Mary's sweaters.
An absolute weed-out course. Burdzy's lectures were very dry yet course content were taught in methodical way. He was extremely knowledgeable and sophisticated in mathematical domain and similarly translated to his ruthlessly hard exams and traps involved. To pass this course, be prepared to binge practice a lot of problems to prevent failure.
He did a lot of fundamental examples during the class, and all of his exams are based upon the examples, there are nothing out of the ordinary.
Echoing a lot of what other people have said - very dry, but occasionally funny. Like genuinely funny. HW has been brutal but the tests are OK, just very calculation heavy. Biggest drawback is he makes you feel like an idiot when you ask questions in-class.
He makes the funniest jokes completely out of the blue He really hates the imperial system Idk tests are fine
His lectures were helpful with good examples and explanations. He made hilarious jokes sometimes and made calculus really fun! I have heard a lot of ppl saying he makes the test hard, but I did not think so. If you put in enough work to understand the contents and do homework diligently, it is not going to be that challenging.
Overall, he covers all the content you need to know for the exams, but he puts problems on the HW and exams that are more complicated than what he explains, so that can be a little challenging. The first midterm is easy, the second one is harder - just do a lot of practice midterms to prep. He also doesn't curve as much as you would expect him to.
I took calc 2 during Spring '22. Burdzy is one of the most interesting professors I've had at UW. He goes straight to the point in lectures and gives you the information you need with lots of practice problems. He loves input from students during lecture. Online weekly quizzes. Exams are doable, as long as you keep up with the class and PRACTICE!
Professor Burdzy's lectures are generally straightforward and he gets across the information you're supposed to cover in the lectures. He tells jokes sometimes and he can be pretty funny. Midterms can be tough so it's good to prepare through doing homework and a detailed notes sheet.
He is very good at teaching the course and makes it enjoyable. He was not very helpful when it comes to feedback and writes very difficult exams, but I felt like I learned a lot in his class. Overall he is a good professor to have.
The MATH 12X series is hard at UW. Burdzy didn't make it any easier or harder. If you want to do well, practice the homework problems and previous midterms. Especially practice taking integrals, Burzy's tests have lots of difficult integrals on them and many people loose points there on tests.
He made it so that you were always afraid to ask questions and acted like everything was obvious. Didn't explain things thoroughly during the lectures so the homework was always way harder than what we went over during class. His midterms were also way harder than everyone else's so the final was the easiest test in his class.
He taught the material and gave fair tests. Good teacher.
His notes were always relevant to the WebAssign and his tests felt pretty fair. Also his random dry humor brings some great moments to the class.
My first impression of Dr. Burdzy was "old crank". This stood through the quarter, but what a guy. His lectures were succinct and his cynical humor always made calculus more enjoyable. Best math prof so far!
Great professor. His lectures were incredibly clear and relevant and had a direct correlation to the homework, quizzes, and midterms. Very funny if you enjoy dry humor. I felt very prepared for the midterms, and overall they were very fair and clear. Can not recommend him enough if you have the opportunity to take his class!
lectures are always entertaining because of Professor Burdzy's dry humor. Lectures are also very helpful and directly correlate to the homework and his midterms are just more difficult and applied versions of stuff from the lectures and homework. The only critique is that sometimes the lecture can get a little redundant at times
Tough grader midterms and finals were weighted the same. Nothing was dropped
grading on exams was more harsh than other classes, for future takers, expect exams to cover content that rarely appears in lectures or homework; its how the exams get you
he made every concept for this class way more complicated than it needed to be. didn't help that his writing was quite literally doctor's handwriting. example problems were unhelpful for the homework. midterms will be hard. look over lecture notes and do practice problems.
Math 125 is hard regardless of teacher. Burdzy writes harder midterms than other profs but he is a great teacher. His lectures were always helpful and he gave good steps to follow that apply to multiple types of questions. When you get to the final it will likely be easier than the midterms as all the profs write it together. Usually has good curve
Pretty good professor but sometimes lectures are pretty complicated when he starts to explain more about the topic, kinda makes sense since he taught graduates too... as for the exams, they weighted the same and the midterms is a little harder than other professors.
Easily one of the toughest profs for cal series, but he teaches incredibly well compared to other profs imho. He gives you formulas straight up and doesnt get caught in tangents, but his tests are very tough. I got a higher grade on the final exam than any of his mid terms. for 125 specifically consider sitting in on an extra 125 lecture like i did
He thinks he is god yet couldn't answer questions in class. Organized lectures yet not very thorough. Relied on TA to understand course content.
He doesn't know how to teach. Bad accent.Even watching the videotaped replay, it's impossible to understand his poor teaching of some of the parts that are difficult to understand, and he stumbles over those parts as if this is the first time he's ever seen this kind of problem, much less expect him to teach you in an easy-to-understand way.
Lectures were often irrelevant. Way too much homework with deadlines way before other professors. Very physics based lectures and tests.
worst professor ever have in my life. calculus class that would expect you to know how to integrate those non-integrable functions… crazy hard and mean. not helpful at all and just try to fail all people in his class
Difficult, but effective professor - if you skip class you won't pass. Quiz sections are a must as well. Use practice tests before midterms/ finals - they are available online. Poor handwriting, but he explains concepts well.
His lectures are incredibly hard to follow. I had to learn the material myself outside of class most of the time, even having gone to nearly every lecture. His tests are also crazy difficult, so be prepared for that if you ever take his class Despite that, he's a nice guy, and he's been doing math for a very long time so he's quite knowledgeable.
Burdzy all things considered wasn't a great teacher but he also wasnt terrible. He just turned out to be a nice old man who is really passionate about what he does. That being said, this feels like a physics class with the problems we do. This is not an easy class by any means and he doesnt really make it easier. Make sure to go to Quiz sections.
Really poor lectures, just assumes that everything is obvious. Incredibly difficult tests.
Boring lectures, midterms were so hard, weird grading scale. Awful
He's honestly a chill guy, gets straight to the point during lectures, his exams are more difficult on average but doing the homework, attending class, and asking for help should get you through. It seems that he cares for his students and does his best to help and clarify for them. Personally he always emailed back quickly to help.
It is obvious that Dr. Burdzy is very smart and likes his job. The course itself was very difficult, and his lectures could be hard to follow at times. That being said, he definitely sets you up for success on the final, so even if you have a bad midterm (his are SO hard), you will probably make up for it on the final.
Dense lectures, hard tests, but a good teacher and almost too smart for our own good - some of the things he took for granted weren't so obvious, at least to me. I liked his dry humor though
His organization and hand-writing amkes contetn delivery difficult. But most importnalty, he does not seemed to be able to elaborate in notation and inductive manner of solutions. I have no doubt in his ability to perform countings and probability, but I doubt his ability of demostrating rigor in proofs and inductions
Exams MUCH harder than any of other prof's exams (after comparing with past archived and ppl from other sessions). Grading not lenient at all. Notes not organized and lectures hard to follow. Some useful techniques not taught (so reading textbook yourself is recommend). He answered hw questions on ed but mostly just gave the answers away.
Exams were reasonable, no unexpected content with everything being covered in lectures. Recorded lectures meant attendance was lax with the exception of a short 10 minute quiz every Friday at the end of lecture. His handwriting could be a bit hard to read sometimes but if you pay attention to his words it's easy to tell what he's describing.
His lectures are not organized at all. He doesn't explain concepts, rather just states the answers. His midterms were very poorly written and significantly harder than those of the other professors. He also has a confusing grading system in which he curves every grade but then removes the curve two weeks before finals. He's terrible.
He's a very nice person and passionate about his field. That said, he doesn't believe in partial credit on the weekly quizzes. Over half the class hadn't earned a single point four weeks in. There is a single midterm with not many questions. It is very easy to convince yourself of an incorrect answer. Hence, it is very difficult to score well.
