Tim is a great professor but his tests are quite difficult. Barely any questions on your exams will be freebies and many will require you to make an educated guess at what the answer may be, as your orgo knowledge will be tested with new situations. Wouldn't recommend if you need an A but would recommend if you want to really understand orgo.
Our class was extremely behind compared to other classes. He's a tough grader; there's little partial credit. Had to make a lot of guesses for questions on the exams. The averages are 40-50. Your grade depends only on these exams (the final being 40% of the grade). The lowest grade on the 1st exam was a 9% and it wasn't an outlier.
to sum this class up: - no homework -notes not posted so do not recommend skipping (his lectures can be fast paced) -his exams are difficult (50 percent averages) but he posts a lot of practice material/tests. only class I spent more than 30 hours studying for each exam and still couldn't get an A.
Tim is a super nice professor who taught the lab portion of CHEM0910 during the fall. His lecture portions were fun and organized. He always cared for his students and helped them with anything. Labs were fun and easy and an easy A grade (for lab). He grades lab reports easily so there's not much to stress about other than the tough material.
Tim is a nice guy, but his exams were quite difficult. Is an OK teacher. Notes are neat (he writes them out and projects them) but he does not post them, so go to lecture. The class is 100% exam based and there is no assigned homework. Exam avgs were always low and most problems involved 0 partial credit. Not awful, but also not the best choice.
Tim was a really nice professor and he did a lot of examples, however, his examples were exponentially easier than the questions given on exams. As long as you can stand seeing low exam grades Tim's class won't be a big deal. He adjusts the grading scale so a 40% is actually a low C. Not a lot of partial credit. But I felt prepared for orgo 2.
Tim made ochem fun, interesting, and a class to look forward to. His tests, while difficult, were fair, and he adjusts his grading scale to reflect this. He really cares about every single student and has many opportunities to answer questions and meet with students outside class. By far my favorite professor thus far at Pitt.
Tim is funny/sarcastic, very accessible, cares about your success, and willing to help you understand. 3 exams + final. Exams are hard but they're fair. Recitation worksheets/practice exams are really helpful, definitely be prepared to work for your grade. I'm not fond of ochem but Tim def made my experience better. I liked taking his class
Tim is one of the best professors I have had at Pitt. He is very knowledgeable about Organic Chemistry, and he will help you understand too. He is very accessible and willing to help students because he cares about their success. I would recommend his course if you want to know Orgo well, and are willing to work for that knowledge.
Having Tim was a fantastic experience, and I plan on TA-ing for his summer and fall. I've had him for Orgo I and II, and while organic chemistry is a very challenging course, Tim really cares and puts lots of effort into his lectures and exams. The curve is set at the beginning of the course: 60+ % gets you a B, 80+ % an A, and a 50+ % a pass :)
Tim is a great professor. Organic Chemistry is hard no matter who you have, but Tim really cares and helps out with lots of practice. The exams push your ability to apply knowledge, but they are very fair. One of the best choices for O Chem.
Tough class. Not helpful. Would not recommend.
Tim is a very nice professor and always willing to help and answer questions. He provides many worksheets and practice exam problems which we need to complete all of to pass. His tests are extremely difficult and it is not an easy A. I still would take Tim again because it is evident if you try he wants you to do well.
Tim is a very polarizing professor - you either love him or think he's a horrible professor. I'm the latter. After coming from a better professor for 1, Tim was vague, rarely gave good examples, and his exams were impossibly hard. He doesn't believe in partial credit!!! He curves well. He's very sarcastic and has a massive, unwarranted ego.
Tim is a really nice guy but as a non-chem person this class was impossible. Studied harder for this class than any other class at Pitt and still had to take pass/fail. Posts no class notes, explanations are very fast and hard to follow, recitation WS is nothing close to the exam. Funny guy who cares a lot, but I would avoid at all costs.
Tim's class is very difficult. You must be willing to put a lot of work in to get an A. It is all test heavy but he has a very good curve. Very nice guy and is very accessible outside of class, mainly in office hours. Textbook does NOT help, his questions are more difficult and require application.
Your grade in the class is primarily based on exams, and the exams are really difficult but he gives a generous curve to compensate. It feels like he intends for his class to be challenging, but still doable if you put in the effort. He can come off as unsympathetic and not understanding if you're having trouble, but he'll still help you reach out.
Explains topics very clearly, and stops during lectures to answer questions and give you time to write stuff down. Very funny and caring
Took the 6-week summer class. Definitely a class that requires your full attention, but Tim makes sure he & his TAs are always accessible for questions. Very nice guy who cares about his students and willing to help if you reach out. Exams are very difficult, but definitely doable with his set curve. Use EVERY resource given to its fullest extent.
organic chem is hard but Tim is pretty good at explaining it. His lectures took me a while to get used to because he writes so fast. Definitely go over your notes multiple times after lecture and do the recitation worksheets and ask him or the TAs questions.
Took Orgo 2 w/ Tim for the 6-wk summer session. Although I did not get an A like I wanted, Tim really has become my all-time FAVORITE professor. SO SO SO caring and hilariously sarcastic. Made lecture enjoyable. His exams are crazy difficult but he truly challenges you to think critically and you learn much more than Orgo itself. Class was curved!
Cares if students do well! Really wants everyone to succeed, and additionally is great at explaining things during lecture.
Literally the best experience for Ochem I could've asked for. I understood the material really well. His tests are graded a bit too strictly however. But other than that, great guy, super nice and is willing to help you out!
I took this course over the summer during the pandemic so it was completely online. I felt that the professor did an amazing job with teaching the course all online and providing enough materials for us to succeed. The class is definitely very difficult but as long as you stay on top of the material and study regularly youll be fine. Good luck!
If you dont love OChem, this class is a nightmare and the only one at Pitt I've ever had to take S/NS. Funny guy but nearly impossible to keep up with, posts no notes, and gives impossibly hard exams. The pandemic dropped class averages from 70s to 20-30s. If I ever had to take this class again, I would simply pass away.
Such a great experience taking this course! Very organized and interesting lectures, and even more importantly provides ample practice problems. Youll be in great shape for the MCAT or whatever your future endeavors are after taking his class.
This class is not easy and I def worked hard for the grade, but he's great at explaining concepts and mechanisms in a way that you can remember them and is good about partial credit. While he can come off intimidating, he's very chill and answers questions by helping you work through them. Learned AND retained the info he taught!
Tim is approachable, funny, and entertaining during lectures. Grade is based on 4 exams only (no hw,attendance,or extra credit), so you need to keep yourself accountable w/studying & practice probs. Recitation is difficult tho. He gives out a ws & its just him & 5 UTAs to help 200+ students. Better off utilizing free tutoring if you're struggling.
I love Tim! He is the most caring orgo 1 prof you will ever meet. He holds SO MANY office hours and review sessions, his TAs are very knowledgeable, he gives plenty of practice work and exams. His class is graded on 4 exams, but you will be prepared as long as you stay on top of things. He curves and most people do well in his class. Love this guy
Tim makes orgo bearable. Orgo is tough, yeah, but this professor gets that. He very obviously cares for both the material he teaches, and more importantly, those he teaches. He is constantly holding reviews, office hours, and is available outside of class almost always. He is funny, energetic, and made orgo fun, somehow!
The best choice for Orgo 1! He CARES about his students, and wants to see us pass his class. Grade is based off 4 exams. He is ALWAYS accessible outside of class for questions. Grades fairly, and you can argue points back. His TAs are amazing. Has a heavy curve, and you get to keep your exams. A tip for his class: DO HIS PRACTICE EXAMS 2+ TIMES!
Tim is one of the best options for Orgo 1. It's not an easy class with any professor you take, but his exams were fair for the most part. If you actually study and use your resources it's not bad. My best advice is to attend TA office hours, do the practice exams well in advance, and ask him for help. He's pretty responsive if he's in a good mood.
Tim is a good lecturer, but his class is graded by 3 tests and a final. It is definitely hard, but his grading scale is fair and he encourages students to study together. He is really helpful with questions, and genuinely wants his students to do well. Attendance isn't mandatory but missing class is hard to make up since he does not use a textbook
Tim Tseng is the best orgo professor in the chem department, hands down. He made learning orgo 1 fun and he clearly cares about his students, taking the time to learn everyone's names and sending out encouraging emails. The class is hard, as orgo is a hard subject, but if you put in the work he will help you succeed.
I got a C+ in gen chem 1 and a c in gen chem 2. Tim helped me get an a by literally giving the class all of the previous tests which he uses the same problems but changes them slightly. I am not smart at all and by doing his previous tests ended up with an a.
Tim is such an amazing professor! I struggled at first. Go to his office hours, and do ALL his practice problems while attending/participating in lectures. Its a lot of work but Tims lectures presented the content in a manageable and realistic way. I had to put a lot of time into this course to learn and reinforce the material!
Tim is the best professor I have had at Pitt he is always available to talk and help you outside of class. He sets you up to succeed and does anything he can to help you. The class material is hard but Tim makes it manageable.
Tim wants you to succeed. He makes class enjoyable and likes getting to know his students. He communicates concepts well and is happy to clarify when students have questions. Go to open discussion and do lots of practice problems. He also offers reviews before exams and lots of extra office hours. You will need to work hard but you can do well.
Tim is the best choice for Ochem 1. He's caring, smart, and an actual good teacher. The practice exams are exactly like his actual exams so if you do those and show up to group discussions to clarify loose ends you can make it through it. got a 40% on the first two exams still ended with a B+ ( 40% is a C) This class is hard but with Tim you got it
Tim is by far the best choice for O-Chem 1. He is a professor who truly cares about his students' success.
Tim is a great ochem professor. His class is hard but he is generous with grading, and you can tell he really cares about his students' success. He manages to make lectures fun and interesting, too. I really wish I could have taken him for ochem 2.
Tim is a great professor. The class is hard, but the content is hard. He tries to get to know every student. Going to office hours is so important. He will curve which is nice. Lectures were always interesting to go to.
Tim is an amazing prof!!! Your final grade is 2 exams and the final, and the class is curved. If you put in effort to go to lectures work with him when you don't understand you'll do fine. Do his recitation ws and practice exams! He makes himself available for any help you'll need through the class and truly cares about you as a student.
Tim was a great professor! Every student passed the class, and the curve was really good. Anything above an 80 is considered an A. Also, his exams are almost the same as the practice exams he gives us.
Tim was amazing, the best teacher I've ever had. He is one of the reasons I switched to a chem major.
Tim was one of the best professors I've ever had. He cares heavily about his students and is available all the time for extra help. Class is curved and practice exams are almost exactly like real exams.
tim is by far the best professor ive ever had at pitt. he WANTS you to succeed and does anything he can to make that possible. ochem 2 is difficult, but i thoroughly enjoyed going to tim's class to learn. hes hilarious and witty and makes an effort to get to know each student he has. absolutely recommend him
Hands down the best prof Ive had at pitt. I hate chemistry but I loved going to his lectures. He is hilarious and makes lecture bearable to sit through. He made an effort to learn everyones name and was excited about the class. The content is difficult so you have to put in the work but tim provides lots of practice exams and worksheets to use.
Tim is by far one of the best professors I have had at Pitt. His lectures were engaging and he truly wants to see everyone succeed in his class. The class is based on 3 exams and a final, highly recommended doing the recitation worksheets and going to his office hours. He also gives a LOT of practice for each exam so that you are well prepared!
by far greatest stem prof at Pitt. if you have any chance to take him, do it. he cares about each and every student's grades AND well being. lectures are engaging and he is such a funny and nice guy. recitations are sometimes not all that helpful though. he gives 30-40 pages of practice before exams. exams are hard but not completely undoable.
I LOVE TIM! His lectures are super clear and his exams are super fair, he doesn't try to trick you. Practice is abundant so use it because his exams are really similar. His curve is also amazing, anything over 40% is passing and his exam averages are in the 60s. He also makes an effort to get to know all of his 200+ students
He's the best orgo professor by far in my opinion. An A is attainable for anyone and he cares for everyone. Tim is the best.
Tim is the best prof I've had at Pitt! He was so funny and sarcastic it made going to a 6pm lecture not bad. So many practice resources, from recitation+TA worksheets for each lecture to 40 page practice exams from past years. There are so many TA office hours and Tim has a 4+ hour one too. He truly cares for all his students and knew 200+ names!
One of the best professors I've ever had. It's a hard class, obviously, but Tim made it fun to sit there and learn. Super accessible, has tons of practice, and is more than willing to help. Use your TAs!!! The reason why my faith in the chem department has been restored.
Hands down best professor I've had at Pitt. Explains concepts extremely well and keeps students engaged with his humor. Just do practice exams and recitation worksheets given and you'll be set. Tries to know every student in the class.
Best professor I've ever had honestly. Lectures were engaging and you can tell he truly wants his students to succeed. Practice exams were definitely harder than actual exams but overall you still have to work hard to get a good grade. Would definitely take him again in a heartbeat, such a caring professor.
THE best chemistry professor I've had, provided us with a ton of old practice problems for each test. He has a preset curve for the class (80-100 is As, 60-80 is Bs, 40-60 is Cs). Your final exam grade could also replace any lower exam grades for us. Fair tests if you start studying AT LEAST a week before. Learn the chemistry, don't just memorize
Genuinely one of the best chemistry professors i've ever had in my life, THE best chemistry professor at Pitt. Not only is he a great teacher, but he is extremely understanding and genuinely cares about his students, which is pretty rare unfortunately. I would have him as a professor 100 times.
Tim is the best chem prof I've ever had. He wants students to succeed and learned all our names. He had office hours on Fridays for multiple hours and was always willing to meet outside of class. His TAs were helpful as well. Your grade is all exams, but he has a generous preset curve. I never read the textbook; just do practice exams/worksheets.
The best professor at The University of Pittsburgh. Tim truly loves organic chemistry and teaching the subject to young minds. He understands the course is difficult and makes his students priority. He has never failed to explain a mechanism and or concept to me several times until I was able to understand. He is a great professor and a role model.
Out does himself as a Professor, insures every student is understanding the subject. If you are able to take Tim please do so. He made me want to keep pursuing my goals. Organic Chemistry is very difficult but he makes students want to attend lecture and learn the subject.
Pitt needs to give him a parking spot. Why do they have their best professor waking from posvar to chevron.
Took him for Ochem 1 and Ochem 2. Cares about his students in a way no other professor at pitt does. Values improvement above all else and hates failing students. If you're struggling he will help you in any way he can. Ochem is not easy and this is by no means an easy A. But the grade you get is fair. Wish I could take him for every stem class.
Honestly had mixed feelings. Lectures were very general compared to the exam questions. Often felt unprepared even though I studied 2 weeks in advance. However, he provides plenty resources to prep for exams. Do the practice problems EARLY and go to office hours. He cares about his students and is accessible, but you must put in the work early on.
Tim is a living god among mortals. He's my favorite professor and therapist of all time. Would sell my left kidney to take his class again.
Tim is the greatest professor I've ever had at pitt. I got a C in ochem 1 and I think ill get an A in Tim's class. He gives 30-40 pages worth of practice exams and the real exams are just like them. No surprises. class is 3 exams (100-140 points) and final (240 points). lecture notes not posted so you must attend TAKE TIM AT ALL COSTS !!!!!!!!!!!!.
Tim is one of the best professors that I've taken at Pitt! He is a phenomenal lecturer and makes the concepts very easy to understand, and he cares a lot about his students. I did much better in his course than in orgo 1. Go to lecture and do the recitation/TAwks/practice exams!!! He gives you 30-40 pages of old exam material and its so helpful!
BEST PROF EVER PLEASE TAKE HIM!! didn't do too hot in ochem 1, but trust, an academic comeback is in store with Tim's class. Don't even look at any others, take Tim.
TAKETIMTAKETIMTAKETIM Generous curve+if you get 80+ on the final you automatically get A in the class. Wonderful lecturer, takes class away from "just memorize" mentality, he actually makes you understand the "why" behind everything. Gives tons of practice material. So friendly and positive attitude. Theo has a great dad. TAKETIMTAKETIMTAKETIM
I love Tim Tseng. If I had him earlier in my academic career, I would have considered switching to a chem major, and I hate chemistry. Tim is an engaging lecturer, gives lots of practice problems, and truly cares about his students. After each test, I made big progress and he emailed me individually to congratulate me.
If Tim has 10 million fans, I'm one of them. If Tim has 69 fans, I'm one of them. If Tim has 1 fan, that one is me. If Tim has no fans, I'm no longer alive because I drank hydrazine solution. If the world is against Tim, I'm against the entire world. Until my last breath, I'll support Tim. Tim is the ultimate pookie bear, BEST PROF EVER :3333
Tim cares about all his students and will probably try to remember your name. Grade consists of only exams, which mirror the tons of practice he provides. Pay attention in class, practice before the exams, and understand how concepts are connected. Tim makes the class enjoyable and I would retake him without second thought.
Great professor but very challenging class. Tim is very caring and is always available outside of class. Class is more challenging than your typical ochem class but it will give you a great understanding of the subject.
Personally not a huge fan of Tim tbh. Lectures are very general and exams are vague. Sometimes exam keys even contradict lecture examples. Classes are slow; if u sit in the front rows he can't easily see ur hands cuz he likes standing in the middle of the classroom. He's a nice person though. 80% is an A, and if u get an A on the final, u get an A.
Tim is an incredible person but I would definitely have taken someone else if I could do it again. Very challenging class. Studied like my life depended on it, went to everything, met one on one, and got a tutor but nothing got me where I wanted for the exams. I know I could've gotten a better grade with less emotional stress in a diff class.
LOOOVE Tim. I barely passed orgo 1 (Bandik) but Tim helped me fully grasp orgo. His lectures were always entertaining and engaging. In fact I refused to skip because I genuinely enjoyed the lectures. His grading scale makes it so it's not like you're competing against your classmates and I found the environment to be very nurturing. TAKE HIM!
Had a lot of personal struggles this semester but Tim is such an amazing lecturer and provides numerous resources to succeed, so I was still able to do very well in the course.Tests can be tricky, but going through the old tests he gives for practice is very helpful. Wish grade wasn't all tests though, that caused me quite a bit of stress
Tim is the best chem teacher I've ever had. It doesn't matter who you took for ochem 1, he meets every student where they're at. He truly cares about his students and wants them to succeed. Grade is based on 3 exams and a final but theres plenty of time to redeem yourself if you fail the first exam. If you have the chance, take Tim.
Tim is amazing!! Super funny guy and rlly cares for his students. Grade is only based on 4 exams, but grading scale is forgiving + no curves, so you're not competing w/ people. Exams can be difficult, but he's rlly good at breaking down concepts so you learn the material very well. Super accessible outside of class. Def helped w/ my MCAT studying!
Hands down probably the best chemistry course I've taken at Pitt. Tim is an incredibly engaging lecturer and is very funny in a deadpan sort of way. He was clear about the grading scale from the start and very accessible for extra help - office hours after every lecture. Most importantly, he truly cares for every student. Couldn't recommend more.
I love Tim! I wish him all the best in raising a new kid! The class was pretty difficult but I'm not very savvy in chemistry in the first place, but he really made me feel engaged and inspired. I enjoy his classes a TON! His grading is very awesome. Thanks for all your hard work Tim.
a must take at pitt. he has the right balance of thorough explanations and lectures with humor and light-heartedness. my first exam i got a 53 and thought my life was over, but i improved my second exam score by over 20% and Tim emailed me congratulating me for improving, which inspired me to finish strong. 3 exams and a final, final replaces low %
Tim Tseng is one of the most depraved professors I've ever seen. The man doesn't have a concrete grading scheme that actually works. He just puts a pre-set curve and screws you over to fit the scheme. That guy can't possibly be glazed over y'all
The hype is real.
love tim as a person, he's great, but his exams are absolutely ridiculous. i felt prepared going into every one of them and came out thinking i knew nothing. he makes his exams really hard and im not sure why. beware of ring structures bc he loves them for some reason. wouldn't take again, he's a gpa buster.
love tim as a person, he's great, but his exams are disgustingly hard. he has a preset curve so an 80% is an A but don't let that fool you, his exam averages are in the 50s (a C-B-) range. felt good going into every exam and then left wanting to cry. not worth it. gpa buster.
By far the hardest, most time-consuming class I have taken so far. I feel like the amount of hard work and torture I put myself through did not reflect in my exam results at all. Even though I was confident in my knowledge, exams were still ridiculously hard (50s + 60s averages). He's a good person, but I wish I took someone else for my GPA's sake.
Tim is great as a person, you can tell he genuinely cares about his students; however, his tests are really hard and sometimes even contradict the notes. Tim writes all his exams before the semester starts and i found this made his class less focused and harder to succeed in. I wish i took a different professor for my GPA.
If you're not religious pick a religion and start praying. This class genuinely made me question my sanity. Tim is the sweetest guy ever but this class is GOD AWFUL. The curve is 40-60 C 60-80 B 80-100 A which seems so doable until the average on exams is a 40%. If you wanna save your GPA, choose someone else.
Tim cares so deeply about us all, I couldn't have better things to say about him as a person. He definitely has a hard class and his exams are difficult, but I feel extremely well prepared for future courses / mcat because of him. He always wanted us to succeed, and he is a great professor with a B-/B average on every exam (unheard of w Pitt orgo)
Tim is so sweet and funny but his exams are made to challenge you and force you to apply the material (as opposed to memorizing and regurgitating). His grading scale is made to help you, and in my opinion, makes up for the difficulty of the course. Even if you did bad on the exams you can make up for it on the final. Go to office hours + ask q's!!!
LOVE TIM! He is cares about all his students and is an amazing lecturer. His teaching style is very similar to George Bandik's, and his grading policy is extremely forgiving. He is always there to regrade an exam, talk privately, or help you with things beyond the class. Tim is a resource both in and out of the class. I couldn't recommend him more.
This is the hardest class I have ever taken because the exams are insane and absolutely no partial credit. Tim is an amazing lecturer and makes sure you understand everything but even so the tests are impossible. His grading scheme is very forgiving so there is always a chance of doing better.
This was the hardest class I've ever taken and I was stressing for my grade like I've never done before in my life. Tim's exams are very tough, but he is always there to help, and answer questions, and offer inspiration. I thought my life was over after doing terrible on the first two exams but Tim taught me to persevere and finish strong!
Tim managed to make me actually like Orgo which feels weird to say. He wants you to understand the material inside and out, but he gives you so many practice resources and is available for explaining topics so it is possible. Genuinely the most rewarding class I have taken at Pitt despite being the hardest. You put in what you get out.
Tim's class was a beast at first, but because of the final I pulled through. The way he teaches lecture content was really intuitive to me. The exam is a lot more challenging than the lecture practice problems but he gives you all his old exams. Master those and set aside time literally every single day for some type of orgo practice and you're set
LOVE TIM! His class was the hardest class I've ever taken, but it was also the most rewarding. I genuinely enjoyed learning from his lectures and was very engaged during them. He is unironically very funny but also kind and intelligent. Taking his class improved my confidence and my ability to think. TAKE HIM but be prepared to study a lil everyday
First, I would STRONGLY advise against taking the six-week course during the summer term (worst six weeks of my life). However, despite that, Tim was one of the best professors I've had at Pitt. His exams are very tough, but it is possible to succeed. If you put in the work, this will probably be one of the most rewarding classes you take at Pitt.
He teaches well... but his tests are nothing like what he teaches. They are 100x harder than anything you will see in class. He starts every class late. Need to study like crazy to get decent grades. Can't recommend unless you are a psycho.
While this class was one of the hardest classes I have taken at Pitt due to the content and lack of much partial credit, Tim's lectures really helped me to do well on the Ochem section on the DAT. Please take him if you are a pre-health student. As a person, he is very nice but at times I felt like he thought I was dumb for asking questions.
Hard class but Tim is very caring and gives lots of outside resources. Extreme curve too.
Tim's class is very difficult. The only assignments for lec are the exams, but Tim curves it well. Tim does not answer questions very well but is an extremely nice person. The Sunday before exams he would host a study group, there are also so many TA hours which is helpful. He post worksheets and practice exams which are both so helpful.
He's a very caring and knowledgable professor. He rly knows what he is talking about, but me on the other hand I spent most of the semester feeling clueless (even tho my grade didn't reflect that). There are lots of help sessions and ways to get help I just wasn't responsive to the help. This class is very hard but you will gain a lot of new info.
