Gives good lectures, replies to emails and postings quickly. He's also very caring for he extended assignment deadlines just for students to have enough time to finish. He releases practice midterm and final WITH TOPIC BREAKDOWN one week earlier than the actual exam so you can have a general sense of what the exam's about and difficulty level.
Amazing lectures! Assignments are a bit hard but bonus was given to compensate.
Really cares about the course material and the students
Great professor, definitely cared about students and material. Labs are difficult but manageable. They are also worth a lot, so put in the effort and you should get all lab marks. Exams were very hard but there was always a "+X" to everyone's grade to makeup for it.
Honestly the most accommodating prof I've had so far in my undergrad. While the assignments are definitely time-consuming and on the tougher side, Jack tries his best to help whenever possible and also provides reasonable extensions.
Extremely helpful when students ask questions during or outside of class. The forum for the class was managed consistently and every question got an answer. He listens to the student's individual needs as well as the needs of the class as a whole in order to help us succeed as much as possible. Tests are extremely hard but are curved.
super accomodating prof, adjusts deadlines and replies quickly on piazza and takes feedback well. On the otherhand the Programming Languages course probably has more content than I've ever seen in a course and really needs to be trimmed down
His teaching is not that bad. It's just, he teaches us too many things in 3 months. The content is amazing and useful if you are really interested in them, if not, it feels like there's no point of learning and memorizing them. He listens to the students really well, and was extremely reliable.
Lecture slides are informative; material was interesting. Some material does need further clarification. Professor is very responsive however, and really does care in trying to help the students understand!
Although the course is named "Programming Languages", the scope of the course is not limited to the languages . Python, Rust and C++ are covered, while the concepts of database systems and RPC are exercised in the lab assignments. The prof was helpful on Piazza and answer almost all questions in a timely manner. UofT Eng needs more profs like him.
This is the best professor I ever had in my 4 years of undergrad. He answers piazza so quickly and spends time solving your problem/addressing your confusion. The course itself is hard, but I really enjoy have him as my professor.
Jack's a true gem in the department since he's taken over ECE326 - Programming Languages. You learn Rust, Python and C++, and specifically the more advanced concepts and paradigms of the languages that you wouldn't normally learn. The tests are difficult, and labs take tons of time, but this is probably the most industry relevant course I've taken.
You can make office hour with him after class, he is really nice
He was the best prof I have ever seen in the CS department, and I will choose his class again if I can!
Best professor I've had. Super accommodating, super active on forums, and gives great and detailed explanations for every question I've asked (dude is a walking encyclopedia). Course is hard by nature, but he definitely went above and beyond to make it bearable for students.
One of the best profs I've had in CS. Provides testers for assignments (which were time consuming but rewarding) so we don't have to deal with ambiguous grading. Answers questions very quickly on Piazza and stays after lectures to answer any questions. Tests were on the harder side but were curved generously. Overall a very caring prof.
Very caring, and very responsive on Piazza.
If Jack Sun has millions of fans, I'm one of them. if Jack Sun has 10 fans, I'm one of them. if Jack Sun has no fans, that means I'm not on earth anymore. if the world is against Jack Sun, then I'm against the world.
Lifesaver! Never seen a prof who answers on Piazza so actively and promptly. I wouldn't be able to complete the assignments without his constant help. Super caring and lenient in grading. Also, one of the most knowledgable instructors I've ever seen.
Very caring and active in piazza, he cares about his students though tests and exams were hard
Very accommodating and super responsive to Piazza posts. Genuinely wants you to understand the material. The course was tough but 100% recommend taking it with Prof Sun.
Prof. Sun is an incredibly accommodating professor. His lectures are informative and highly engaging. Would definitely take another course with him again!
auto testers was a bit annoying but the prof is good and cares about the student. The course had a couple of hiccups such as the booking system, but the prof would be very accodmating.
If you really want to devote your time for the good grade and to learn something. He WON'T let you down. Mark my word
Speaks clearly
Professor Sun cares about his students! I truly enjoyed his class, as he made a challenging course CSC369 more approachable and engaging. He responds to piazza quickly, which really helped a lot when I was confused about concepts/assignments. One of the best professors I had at UofT!
I had a problem understanding the course content at the beggining but got through them at the end. The course itself was challenging but a good grade is not hard to get. Professor Sun delivered super interesting lectures and was always willing to answer students' questions and help.
By far one of the best professors I have seen at UofT. He has amazing explanations and really knows his way around the course material. Of course, the course itself is a heavy one so you have to put in the time but if you do, he is super helpful and hands on. Kuei is there to x10 your learning as long as you put in the time and effort.
Professor Sun is the most caring and responsible professor I've met during undergraduate studies. His lectures are clear and well-organized, covering every key point in course materials, and the demo codings are very useful to assignments and project. He always devotes extra time to respond Piazza and emails so quickly to address your confusion.
Professor Sun, the most exceptional professor at UofT, adeptly explains concepts, provides invaluable lecture slides, and offers insightful live demonstrations on React and Django, significantly enriching understandings of web development. His approach to course deliverables further enhances comprehension of web development practices.
With Prof. Sun, this is the course you can expect to really enjoy the learning process and develop skills that are useful for future work. The course itself is a heavy one, but don't worry if you lack experience in website development. The lectures, quizzes, assignments, project and professor's generous help will effectively prepare you to learn.
Prof. Sun is the best prof I have ever met at UofT! The assignments, projects, and tests are excellent resources for digesting the course material and encouraging innovation. Additionally, Prof. Sun is super caring to his students! His willingness to devote extra time to his students makes the demanding full-stack course a joyful learning journey.
Highly recommended to take his course! He is a super caring professor and genuinely cares about his students. He always responds to the questions asked on Piazza swiftly and in detail. Additionally, his lectures and course materials are comprehensive and foster students' innovation. Best professor I've ever seen!
He really knows his stuff and is insanely good at debugging. He's really active on Piazza and if you private post a bug you've been stuck on for a while, chances are he can help you solve it. He's fair with his marking (if midterm is too hard, he'll take in feedback and adjust the final). Highly recommend!!!
Really helpful on piazza and office hours. He knows the material very well and is great at explaining. He cares for his students (as seen by his even 3am responses on Piazza). Fair grader and takes in feedback from the students which is great (will extend assignments when necessary, adjust grading, etc)
Professor Kuei Sun was one of the best professors I've had at my time at UofT, he is an extremely impactful educator that is passionate about the work he's doing. He creates an atmosphere where you feel genuinely supported and encouraged to learn more. Overall 10/10, would take again!
The best course I've taken! It is immediately obvious that Professor Sun is well-versed in the material and cares for his students. The assignments and projects were very well structured and fair and ensured that we had a good grasp of the material taught in the lecture. Extremely kind and accessible outside of class as well!
Jack's genuine care for students is remarkable. He consistently went above and beyond to assist with questions, always providing timely responses through Piazza and email, which I greatly appreciated. Additionally, the knowledge he imparted in class was clear and logically structured. His approach greatly reduced my academic anxiety and pressure.
Answers every question on Piazza, willing to read through your code to help you to point out where your bug is, explains the concepts clearly and provides lecture recordings, he is truly the most caring professor I've ever met throughout my undergrad life!
His lectures were well-structured. His enthusiasm for teaching was evident. He was very patient, always willing to offer support to students, both during office hours and on Piazza. The coursework was a bit challenging yet fair. I highly recommend Professor Sun for anyone interested in 369. Overall, it was a great learning experience.
Very responsible professor, always answer emails and piazza questions. The course is overall well designed for learning; there are Quercus quiz (unlimited attempts) after every lecture, and the assignments require a decent understanding of the material to complete but aren't hard to earn high marks.
Very fast-paced lectures and a large amount of content. My suggestion is to slow the pace and make sure everyone understands the basic idea. The lab actually needs you have knowledge about the database, so make sure you know about that already
Prof Jack held wonderful lectures and the best logistics. He was amazingly helpful when I faced illness during the course. Besides, I really enjoy his 1-to-1 office hour, which was extremely helpful for understanding materials from the lectures.
Universally loved computer science professor for the following reasons: - Very responsive on Piazza. Almost every question and concern gets answered. - Very generous with the marking e.g. no auto-fail, reasonable exams, no curving down. - Very nice in class, records lectures, always available to answer questions.
This is my first time leaving a comment on this website and the only reason I do this is to let you guys know that he is the GOAT professor at uoft. This term I took both of his classes, 309 and 369, and both were amazing. If you find his name on Acorn for the course that you're planning to take, go for it. You'll thank me later.
Very active on Piazza and caring to student's situations and needs.
Jack is the best comp sci prof during my undergrad time. As he super cares to his students, always answering questions promptly on piazza. If you have any chance to take his course, choose him, you will learn a lot!
Professor Sun is an incredibly friendly and supportive educator. He has always been quick to respond to any questions I have, providing timely and helpful answers. His dedicated guidance and selfless support have greatly aided us in steadily progressing on our academic journey.
Nicest prof ever had in uoft! Like the course itself is obviously kind of heavy load one where one has to learn html, css, bootstrap, Django template language, Django REST framework, js, React. But he obviously took everything into account and actually hoped everyone to do well.
Super approachable!!
Best professor ever! Jack is super friendly and helpful. Despite this course is a bit hard and heavy-loaded, Jack always patiently answer questions on Piazza with clear explanation. Additionally, Jack held great lectures with the clear logistics. His help is extremely helpful to understand materials.
Professor Sun, our CSC494 Supervisor, has been incredibly supportive, offering valuable suggestions and resources. His dedication has propelled our team's significant progress. Moreover, Jack's friendly engagement with every team member both on and off-campus has enriched our overall experience. Highly commendable!
Professor Jack is the best prof I had at uoft! He is very supportive and caring for his student. During my time taking his csc369 and csc309 courses, he answers all the piazza posts very quickly and he also held amazing lectures. Highly recommended to take his courses!
Prof. Jack Sun is extremely supportive, he cares about his students and actually wants his students to do well. His assignments had a transparent grading criteria, it's possible to get 100% if you spend the time and dig into the code. He is very accessible outside of class, and he always answer your questions clearly if you go to his office hours.
There was once when a TA did not show up in my group's presentation, we emailed Prof. Jack and he immediately booked a meeting with us and evaluated our presentation. Highly recommend his courses!
Professor Jack is extremely talented at teaching! He is very supportive for his students. I took CSC369 with him, despite the content being challenging, I learned a lot and built very good foundations in Operating Systems. Highly recommended to take his courses!
I took CSC309 with Professor Jack after a great experience with him in CSC369. Once again, he demonstrated excellent teaching skills, providing clear instructions on both content and grading. When our TA was unavailable during the final project demo, Professor Jack personally stepped in to grade it. I highly recommend taking his courses!
Genuinely one of the kindest, most interesting professors I have ever had. Lectures are clear and content is delivered intuitively. He is always accessible in office hours and I have never seen a professor care more about his students and their success. He lives up to his motto: "treat students like friends and not numbers on a spreadsheet".
The high reviews for this guy are very well deserved. Everything you want in a prof, Jack Sun has it. I can't think of a single flaw with him, and I hope to play among us with him some day.
I am taking Jacks 369 course this semester and I must say none of these reviews are shying from the truth; Jack is an inspiration and a role model for the whole of computer science in its entire field. He showcases tremendous knowledge on course material and is beyond helpful and understanding in aiding each and every student succeed in the course.
This essential and mandatory course was highly beneficial, and I am pleased to have taken it with Prof. Sun. The lectures were well-structured and systematic, seamlessly linking the content to the assignments, which made them practical and intriguing. Overall, the course was both enriching and enjoyable, making it a truly rewarding experience.
Despite my own questionable actions leading to an AO, Jack has gone above and beyond to ensure that every student succeeds. His inspiring lectures filled enthusiasm and vigorousness, enabling me to get motivated to pursue learning even beyond the classroom. Jack is very reasonable, empathetic, and understanding to guarantee every student's success.
Assignments in this course are interesting and show the fundamentals of OS programming. A bit easy to me, but I am used to C coding. Lectures have a lot of content but are presented well and not confusing. Prof was approachable and always willing to help students even just after lectures.
The professor's lectures are exceptionally clear and easy to understand, covering all the key points comprehensively. He makes even complex topics feel approachable and engaging. His teaching style truly stands out, making the material both accessible and enjoyable to learn!
Professor Sun was a great subject expert in Operating Systems, his lectures explain the concepts very clearly and he is always willing to take his time to elaborate further and even review code after lecture! He definitely made one of the toughest courses in CS doable!
Approachable prof with great lectures
super lucky to be part of Jack's research project.
Jack is amazing, he consistently holds OHs to help students, he debugs our code line by line instead of just roughly suggesting random things, his lectures are very organized and clearly explained, he is approachable and very very kind. He also offers to write Recommendation letter even I did not research with him. I will miss him f u uoft HR team
No hidden tests on assignments gives a great learning experience.
Jack is the best professor I've ever had who truly cares about the student's success. Their lectures are clear, engaging, and well-structured, making even complex topics easy to understand. They are also fair with grading and always approachable, creating a supportive and positive learning environment. Highly recommended!
Jack is amazing, cares about the students and very passionate about teaching. One of the best professors at UofT.
amazing prof
best office hours and piazza cos he's so helpful, truly cares and makes complex ideas super understandable, curves when needed (bless). will truly miss kuei the goat sun if he doesn't return after winter sem
All round the best CS professor that I have had
I had him last year for 309. Great prof, knew a lot about the material, was responsive on Piazza, and informative during office hours. Released autotests for assignments. The midterm was pretty hard but you could have your final mark take its place in the weighting if it was higher.
Took CSC309 with Prof. Sun in 2023. hands-down best prof at UofT. He enjoys teaching, super supportive and caring for his student. Did everything he could to ensure his students success. Explained complex concepts very clearly. Course was spot-on industry standards. Final project got me my first job mid-recession.
True expert in his field and simultaneously amazing at conveying all information in a way that helps you understand from first principles what is going on; even on harder topics like networking and pipes. Very responsive to students and always willing to help. I have never made a piazza post that hasn't been answered within 20 minutes.
True expert in his field and simultaneously amazing at conveying all information in a way that helps you understand from first principles what is going on. Very responsive to students and always willing to help. I have never made a piazza post that hasn't been answered within 20 minutes.
The goat, need I say more? In an era of bummy profs who believe 12 term tests weighted equally is the key to an education "worth" thousands, prof. SUN ☀️ is actually an inspiring and caring instructor who wants to see his students learn & succeed. if he is teaching a course the best way to describe the experience is lebron 2016 finals. GOAT status.
gives nice curves, easy content, no hidden tests for assignments, excellent course, OS is GOAT
He saved my 369!
Term test averages are always incredibly low (around 40%) with impossible questions making it extremely hard to actually show your knowledge, instead you're forced to guess answers just to be curved up to a 60%. Midterms are usually impossible to finish and assignments take 10 hours minimum to complete. Its a shame because OS is actually important
His lectures are super info heavy. He does a great job explaining certain concepts but has way too much detail that doesn't reflect test content. Doing the practice tests helps but you realistically will only score 40% before the curve because theres way too many questions and only 50 mins for each midterm. Assignments take at LEAST 30 hours.
The course is brutal, but the prof is a gem. He is extremely knowledgeable and explains complex OS concepts clearly. Very caring and responsive on Piazza. The assignments are hard and the process is painful, but the content is gold. You walk away feeling like you actually learned something valuable. 5/5.
probably the most difficult of the required CS spec courses. Jack is a great at explaining and is super available outside of class. Tests are very difficult and were heavily curved, assignments take at least a dozen hours each.
He was a pretty chill guy, but the tests were brutal
Overrated. His midterms are very unfair with 40% averages pre-curve.
