Great prof. A little rough with English

This guy really has to brush up his command of english, he is atrocious.
He's got a great sense of humour, Yeah baby! Teaches things a bit too slowly and unclearly at times.
humourous, but hard to understand and slow at times
what is he saying?!?! i need clarica. accent thick, command of english poor. if you dont know how to speak english, you dont belong in the classroom!!
Learn some english, is a crappy teacher
Hey don't insult the guy! I thought he was a good prof. Reason being is because I adapted to his accent a bit quicker than others, but there are some topics where he can't explain too well, I was stuck on Volumes, I lost my marks there. Good guy overall.
He is hard to understand at first but after a few classes he starts to make sense. He hands out dummy quizzes that help make the midterms and exams seem a little easier.

Great professor. He is helpful, and after getting a hang of his accent, very clear. He makes learning calculus straight forward and easy. Big Plus to him.
Nobody is perfect. So what he can't pronounce English words correctly? He is a prof, he carries a Phd in Math. He teaches well and at good pace. Don't complain about his accent, you don't like it you are free to switch sections. Good Prof...
good prof.
Sure his accent is not perfect but nobody has a perfect accent, immigrant or not we all say a few words wrong. HE IS A DAM GOOD PROF! he is halarious too. He makes calculus fun. I look forward to his class. GREAT PROF! GO LAN!
"find deribitive to get maximaaa and minimaaa..to find the areaaaar use the forminer.to cancunate, use cancunator...think of deribitive as lady takin off socks and puttin it on integral"
I am a strong supporter of standardised english proficiency testing...FOR PROFESSORS. This guy wouldn't be able to order from Mcd's with his accent. "I want aer hapee meear with no flies, and extwa mayunairse. Forget fob, he's sotb.
it would be nice if we could understand what he was saying
start making a LAN dictionary of terms on the first day, here are some of terms: take the image => take the limit....manius => minus...take the socks off => take the derivative
KInda hard to understand , but very very funny
Hilarious prof. great teacher, but extremely hard exams and tests.
I'd understand em better.. if only his lectures were in chinese! (oh wait.. arent they??)
really bad accent, difficult to understand, half answers questions if at all
Hilarious teacher.. but he explains it good..

The test are easy enough, although the multiple choice can be very tricky and worth too much. As a teacher, he is really funny, but he should learn to teach. Is it just me, or are all math prof incoherent? easy if you can learn it yourself.
He was alright, very funny and pretty helpful
i can't understand what he's teaching and saying. sometimes he didn't answer students' questions
Horrible!!.. Absolutely, Totally horrible!! Seriously, its unbelievable how a UNIVERSITY can possibly hire someone who has zero communication skills. I failed the last time i had him - and I think im giving up here again.
really funny... makes u like the course
DIDN'T UNDERSTAND ANYTHING FOR 3 WEEKS. BUT STICK TO THIS CLASS CUZ HE IS EASY MARKER AND HE WILL UNDERSTAND HIS ENGLISH ONCE YOU GET USED TO IT.
studied his notes and be sure to cover the chapters that he assigned for homework, and sections that he skips, cuz they will come and haunt you in the finals.

HORRIBLE TEACHER, I don't care about his accent but not only that he cant communicate but he is also RUDE and disrespectful.
really good prof, knows his stuff but only his comunication not clear enough but if u listen to him u ll get what he s talking about. helps u understand things and gives u courage to stay in class and pass the course, nice job dr.lan, keep it up.
This guy is horrible at teaching. He has the same name Lan which is my first name but Lan is his last name. I was expecting good things to happen until he had to fail me. I just hate the way he teaches and explains things. Really a lack of help for success. Study the notes first, yeah right
he only accomodates girls...a true ****. very effective in delivering the material to those who don't give two****s about concepts and just want to memorize something because there are exams.
Lan no speak-a english. He gives stupid examples. for example after drawing 2 stick figures, says, "pretend this is your mother and this is your father" da F**k!? U have to memorize everything in his class. LAN CANT SPEAK ENGLISH!!!! not even his own country men can understand him! My advise is log onto Rows and change him if he's ur teacher.
From the sounds of it, this guy needs English lessons more than fish need water....

oh no he's just crazy ! just keep him away from me.
I wish i knew wht he says in class :( god knows how ryerson even thot of hiring him as a prof...ryerson is NO GOOD!
the professor is not bad at all! guys be fair! usually u guys keep talking in the class n expecting him to make u SHUT UP! but simply, he doesn't! well ,he teaches very good, but u need to concentrate a lil bit! also math is more like practicing not knowing the concepts n then expecting urselves to know the whole thing! PLZ BE FAIR
Not very clear because of the accent, but very good teacher. Funny (when you understand his jokes), helpful and clear examples. Test are exactly as he gives examples in class (with a few minor alterations), and he practically gives answers sometimes.
Oh... my... god... He's all over the place, he ONLY gives examples and WON'T explain WHY he's doing what he's doing UNLESS you ask... he CAN'T teach... i've learned the entire class by myself, no thanks so him.. at all.
Mr. Lan would have been very helpful if only he understood what the student's question is. Otherwise he is a great teacher. I just didnt like it when he raised his voice at me when I went up to ask a question.
A very not clear prof...his jokes are boring and I just keep laughing at him not with him....a terrible accent and bad teaching...he write so small on the board and doesn't know how 2 use the marker...after all his grading is not fair...but his exams are so easy. I believe I can teach the class instead of him and be better than him.
if he wants to apply himself, he can teach.who says "it doesnt matter" if a student doesnt understand? only him! i never understand anything unless i read the book. the only reason ppl are passing is because they are memorizing the examples his giving. not really learning anything. total waste of money.
The professor can't teach well...he just shows a bunch of examples, and if you memorize them, you'll get a good mark. But the point is, you don't really learn much...rather do everything on your own. He's full of jokes. His accent makes me laugh, but the jokes are horrible.
Dr. Klan gives some good classroom examples to illustrate key points. He knows math but Speaks only Chinglish. Uses "culture" as screen to say offensive (funny) things that other teacher could't. Marking is random. K.LAN custom courseware is a 600 page abomination of materials photocopied from other textbooks in no part. order with no explanations.
the Lan man is awesome.keep up the good work sir.
he is good!!!!!
THE BEST PROF IN THE WORLD
better thann other math teachers.Teaches according to tests and exams.SOmetimes hard to understand but he is experienced and gives good examples.
Great prof, knows his stuff very well. Sit at the front so you can hear him and understand what he's saying. Good course. very easy.

K. Lan Rocks!!!! If you try to listen he will be hilarious in class and says the funniest stuff. His teaching is concise because he gives a lot of examples, and wants his students to do well. What a button!!
No cheat sheets. 50% of marks on tests and exams are multiple choice (some of which include "none of the above") with a small number of short-answer problems (little mercy). Offers easy 10% for doing homework. Assigns tons of homework. He's brilliant, but it can be hard to understand his English. Fair, but tough.
His English is rough, yes, but if you pay close attention to what he says you'll figure it out. I got used to it, even if in the first 2 days I couldn't understand a word that came out of him. Midterms are pretty easy if you study, but the final is a tad hard (at least mine was). Practice the homework problems, attend lectures, and you'll get an A.
He makes the oddest jokes at times and it lightens the mode of the class. However, he writes several wrong answers on the board (which you copy and not knowing they're wrong) and cross them out saying "WRONG! woo told yo dat?", very annoying. On this tests, the multiply choice (usually 10) are worth 3 marks each, which can hurt your mark deeply.
Midterms are usually very easy, but final exams are not.
The best professor i have ever had. Sure he is of some oriental decent, but he still manages to teach you the right stuff. He makes math into magic... lol.
He is NOT the one u seen in picture, he is much older with alot of experience, I like him he is pretty good.
Can't teach
If you don't speak fluent chinese don't come to class
Strongly recommend that you avoid this teacher. Very inconsiderate, does not help students, does not answer questions, avoids students, dismisses students' questions and generally tries to do as little work as possible. Currently still taking the class, however nearly all of my learning is done on my own time. Horrible waste of $1000.
This prof. knows what he's talking about but he is lazy.He takes two or three days to cover a section. He rushes through everything thing"and tells you to read it in the textbook" before a test.**Whiles in his class, try to be sections ahead of the class and think of questions you did not practise in class whiles preparing for a test!I'm very sure he
This guy is rude. I had the other math prof but he ended up taking my question during the final.. he couldn't even answer a simple yes or no question regarding a concept. It makes me wonder how helpful he was to his actual students since I got absolutely nothing.
He's one of the best math teacher I've ever had,Although he seems tough but if you attend lecture the final exam is fine. He makes math very understandable :)
People will always look for excuses to do poorly. In the real world not all people speak perfect english. This guy is a great teacher. No wonder he makes over 150k a year!
As a teacher he seemed pretty good to me. His communication skills aren't A1, but we weren't learning to recite poetry, this was calculus. I had little problem following him generally. In my course he made the mid-term VERY hard (most people failed), but then proceeded to curve the marks. The final was easy though, so I ended up with an A+ :)
Most people failed the midterm but the final was easy.
He was absolutely brutal. Was hard to understand and wouldn't properly answer questions. Our class average was around 45 after the midterm and he refused to curve it. I was one of the few students who did well but only because of the math help in the library.
I love this professor, he's a great man. He truly cares about the student who studies and works hard. He even helps the student outside the class. Make sure you attend all his classes and PAY ATTENTION to everything! No pain no gain so study hard.
Great professor. Go to lectures
He is amazingg !!! His accent might be kinda hard to understand at first ... But go to class do ur homework easy A+ ...
funny and easy to follow when paying attention
He is a great math professor, once you get used to his speesh you'll enderstand everything he says. He also has a great sense of humour, who else will draw cartoons on the board and remember you right after an earthquake?
Awesome Math prof! Very fair midterm and final, and the problems he does in class are very helpful. In addition, he's a funny dude! If you show up to his lectures, pay attention and do all your homework questions you're going to get a very good mark.
The bad: Spends forever on very simple concepts, then rushes through the complicated topics, never explaining them properly. Plays favorites with other asian students. Unable to teach and advocated bland memorization. He was "teaching" on friday and then we had a final on monday, when every other prof finished a week early. The good: None.
HAHA K LAN IS HILARIOUS! Man, his accent is off the charts. Very funny and enthusiastic man (both office and lecture). Easy course so he had to be easy too. He's got his PhD in mathematics and has been teaching for a while, so he's good. Overall, funny and well knowledgeable. Midterm was easy, final was slightly challenging.
He's so funny!! Even with his accent he is pretty understandable. He's good in teaching students and is very helpful!
I was scared in the first class when I realized he had an accent that was hard to understand. But as I came to learn, this man is very hilarious, as well as very helpful! He makes awkward jokes in class that nobody really gets. About 1/2 the class is him lecturing and the other 1/2 is him doing examples to make sure you understand it. Recommended!
very funny. Hard to understand though due to the accent.
hard to understand due to the strong accent. easy midterm and exam. make sure to look over the examples he gives!
Poor lecturer. Difficult to understand, does not clarify concepts well when asked, long winded, and uninteresting.
The subject matter is very interesting but he is a horrible teacher. Getting questions answered or topics clarified is frustrating because he barely has a grasp of the English language.
Very poor professor overall. Teacher can barely orate in English. Does not understand questions students ask and thereby cannot answer them. Even yes or no answers to simple questions elicit responses indistinguishable from Cantonese. Is not aware of mathematical conventions in English and so makes lectures difficult. Seek another professor.
Knowledgeable & passionate 4 math. u’ll get used to his accent. Do the homework, attend classes & u'll be ok. class was small. If u don’t understand ask and explains again. Took the same course @ Athabasca , book by Anton & Rorres was not understandable. Failed that course. Lan uses “Linear Algebra” by Lan.very organized , easy to understand.
Accent that is hard to understand at times. He OVER COMPLICATES topics that is usually easy. Because of this, half the time you will not understand him unless you go through the textbook. He is lazy so his tests are geared toward M/C -so much in fact getting ONE-TWO wrong could destroy your whole grade. Tests generally easy though. Not recommended!
I had him both semesters and let me say, at first I had no idea what was going on, but you learn his ways. I was totally confused and stressed at first, but hey that's my own fault. Pay attention, ask questions, take notes, and do the homework. He's a decent guy, you just need to involve yourself more than you'd normally be comfortable with.
TEACH YOUR BROTHER! overall great experience.
would not recommend. tests are mostly MCQs and do not reflect his emphasis/teaching time on the different concepts. he does not answer emails, office hrs are not helpful. but he's still a nice guy..
His accent is thick, but you can understand him it's fine. Straightforward man, and "flipped classroom" style will get you a great mark. Go over each topic BEFORE class, and he will happily spend the entire class time honing your skills by having everyone participate on the board & w each other. If you get on his level, you'll do great.
He wrote the textbook used in this course, and it often does a better job explaining the content than he does. That said, his tests are exactly like the assigned end-of-section problems (due weekly), so if you can do them, you'll have no problem getting a high mark.
Hard to Understand. Not helpful Whatsoever. Acts as if he doesn't care whether you pass or fail .
Dr. Lan was one of my favourite profs last semester. LOTS of class examples, he interacts with the class, is helpful, and has a great sense of humour. Also, only really needed the textbook to do the assigned problem sets -his lectures were nice and thorough.
He's not helpful whatsoever and extremely rude. Won't give you the time of day if you are going for extra help or further explanation about concepts
The course itself it not very difficult. You just have to do all the practice questions (they are assigned for graded homework anyway) and the midterms are pretty exactly the same as the questions. Exam is a little bit harder. He has a very thick accent which makes it hard to understand him. I would avoid him if you are passionate about the subject
The contents are super easy, and, once you understand his way of explanation, it's one of the easiest courses. He has a great sense of humor, and do many examples in the class which are very relevant to the exam questions.
Teacher with good booknotes. Easy understanding teaching method. Highly recommanded
He's really nice and he's pretty funny, especially if you talk to him individually. Course is math so what do you expect, it's not a piece of cake. Put in the work and you'll be good.
It was very difficult to understand Lan, I did not find his style of teaching very helpful. When students asked questions, he would typically brush them off and say "do the homework and you'll understand." The textbook -which he also wrote- is not very student friendly. Tests were a mix of homework problems and tricky questions about proofs.
He has a thick accent and sometimes, it was difficult to understand him but his two tests and exam were all from homework. He goes through a lot of examples during the lecture and as long as you actually do the homework, it is not difficult to receive A+.
Accent makes understanding difficult during lectures. Doesn't provide an overview of the topic, just dives into doing examples, which makes it hard to follow at home days later when reviewing notes. Tests are a little rough but not insanely so.
Very lazy, and hard to understand (english) and still prefers oriental students. Who puts multiple choice in midterms and exam in a math course. The course cost over $1000 and he is too lazy to mark them
He was GREAT, in class he gives you all the necessary tools and insights to do well, but you have to meet him halfway by working hard on the course on your own. In my experience if you do all the recommended questions, like REALLY DO them and ask about the ones you don't get, you'll be fine. I didn't go to a single lab and still got a B. Stupid me.
He " teaches" the absolute bare minimum of the material. If you do not need math in the future and this is the only course you'll ever need to take, he is fine. You will ace his incredibly easy exam and be on your merry way. But woe is you if you like math and plan on having a career in it. You can't teach what you don't know, right "Dr" Lan?
Easy class. Literally ripped questions from the textbook (which he wrote). However, he doesn't teach many things. We didn't learn Eigenvalues at all, for instance, and even though I scored well in his class I find myself having to do a lot of background reading for vector Calculus.
I will not take any courses with this professor again in my life. First he is very disrespectful to students, secondly, his teaching style is extremely poor and disorganized. What concerned me the most is that some very important material were skipped which will show up in the future courses. Take this course from other professors instead.
Teaches what you need to know, and does it a faster pace than the other professors teaching the same course. Confusing in class and it was quite difficult, but when I actually opened his textbook and did the homework, it was very straightforward and simple. But go to his lectures! If he tells you to buy his textbook, buy it.
This professor is good, but his accent is very bad. That doesn't mean you have any right to disrespect him. If you have to take this prof, take notes on the topic (he gives you a course outline and chapters he will cover) before you go to the lecture. That will make the lecture much clearer. Also, don't buy his book, just use the free online one.
Math used to be my lowest grade, now its my GPA booster!!! Dr. Lan is the best!!! Although he can get unclear and fast during his lectures, GO TO HIS LECTURES!!! His notes are the best and tells you exactly what to focus on for tests. You must practise questions in order to be a pro at everything. This course is easy you just have to work for it.
Dr. Lan is a good teacher however he is hard to understand because of his accent. If you want to pass this course with a good mark, get ready to do a lot of practice questions from the textbook. The midterm and final were pretty easy.
Dr. Lan is the best!!!
Definitely will need the textbook as reference because his teaching methods aren't the greatest. Very Very Very difficult to understand and often gets angry when you ask him to answer a question or to clarify a question. Assumes all students learn at the same pace and doesn't accommodate for much. Do not recommend.
Although I did not do so well grade-wise in his classes, when I took his transition class, he really cares for his students to pass. Please do take his transition classes because he is teaches more clearer and he makes you practice rigorously just so you can get it. One problem is that he gets upset and expects that you know his content already.
Keep up with every day work and review before you go to class, and participate in class. Take good notes and practice!! He has a bit of an accent, but he is a real gem and he truly cares and definitely want you to do well. I wish I could take this course again.
He explains the content really well but his accent can sometimes be hard to understand. Attendance and homework is VERY important if you're looking to get a good grade. Theres opportunity to participate which I HIGHLY recommend because he explains where you went wrong. ITS VERY HARD TO GET A GOOD GRADE IF YOU MISS CLASS!
His "book" on linear algebra is verbatim copied from other sources, with only the easiest examples left. All challenging material/theory has been removed. This is pretty much what this professor is: a shallow shell with a cavity where knowledge should be. A prime example why tenure should not be given based on seniority. Worst RU has to offer.
The worst math teacher ive ever had.
The midterms are actually so easy like I could've got 100 percent on them if I wasn't so stupid. Just take good notes during his lectures, review his lecture notes before the exams and do all the assigned homework questions. Don't over complicate things on the exams and be aware of the shortcuts you can take.
Loved him. Best math professor I have ever had. Makes learning hard concepts very simple. Works VERY hard for your success but that can be too much for some people since he is not as "chill" as other professors who do not care as much. You get out of the course with him, as much as you put in. 100% recommend if you can get over your accent issues.
Unless you come from the same cultural background as Prof. Lan, there's no way you will understand him at all. His midterms were decently fair, but the exam was next level hard. His textbook is a ripoff, I paid 30 bucks for an early edition instead of 100+ for the newest one. The textbook is full of mistakes but somewhat decent at actually teaching
I personally don't like many professors at Ryerson but this is one of the few that teach you exactly what they will test. The class gets difficult as you progress so DO NOT COPY HOMEWORK.. do it and learn it because it is the only way to do well. If you study you can get an A. Exam question's are always the harder topics so STUDYYYY!!!!!
you cannot understand a word he is saying unless to come from same background as lan
He's pretty descent, the only thing I hated is that he doesn't give you a formula sheet. I also hated the fact that his multiple choice questions are 4 marks each. Once you get used to his accent, understanding him isn't bad. He can be condescending at times. You'll definitely learn from his lectures. Be prepared to take lots of notes!
This guy is impossible to understand. I don't understand how he makes a living as a professor. He also cracks terrible jokes, and doesn't move forward with lecture until someone "laughs." ... what am I supposed to be laughing at if I don't know what you're saying?! He also wrote the textbook he makes you use, but he has made A LOT of mistakes in it
His tests were very fair and always like the textbook. His accent takes some getting used to but it's really not that bad. He was very helpful during and outside of class.
Cant even hear him or see what hes writing Class of 200: no one understands him
Despite the intial accent, which you get used to he is not that bad of a professor. As the course coordinator his exams are essentially his lecture questions. As long as you take good notes and do not skip his classes you can do well in his classes
His lectures are him muttering, facing away from the class, and rewriting the textbook (that he wrote) on the board with all the errors in the textbook transcribed. Do the homework for the marks, but don't go to class. Tests are fair at least. You won't understand any of what you're doing - it's all rote math. Look up online explanations of it all.
really enjoyed his lectures, entertaining, accent kind've hard to understand at first but you'll get used to it, gives you shortcuts to problems
His expectations for tests/exams are pretty straight forward - do the assigned problems in his textbook and watch out for the (several) mistakes that are in the solutions. That being said, it felt like a lot of regurgitation with no emphasis on core concepts.
Horrible teacher. Homework did not relate to midterm or final. Claimed if you didn't do well on a midterm or final it was because you didn't do the homework or study -which is a lie because homework was apart of our mark. Would get 100% on the quizzes, but would fail the midterm. Cannot understand a word he says lol. Avoid at ALL costs
Dr. Lan is an amazing professor in that he fully understands the course material and has a passion for helping his students out understanding it. I felt comfortable in knowing that he goes above and beyond for his students. Course material is fair as long as your attention is there. Plenty of assignments to help you out. Amazing prof. Thanks Sir!
The second coming of Christ, this man highhandedly made the semester better for a heavy portion his students. Showing up to lectures and completing assigned work make the quizzes and exams fairly easy and straight-forward. This entire course was like that scene in Kung-Fu Panda where Shifu teaches Po through food and the final exam is Tai Lung.
The man is a God. I sucked through Math throughout highschool and this man single-handedly in six weeks made derivatives and integration something tangible and gave me a 4.0 to add to my transcript. Highly recommend.
Absolutely loved him. He broke down everything into such simple terms, even gave shortcuts. The only drawback to his lectures was his heavy accent but you'll get used to it. Otherwise, very fair midterm, final and quizzes (all based off the assigned HW) so attend the lectures and complete the HW and it's a guaranteed A+.
Honestly he's not the greatest prof he has a really thick accent and his classes are super boring. Be ready to do a lot of self-study he's not that great of a help
this guy has terrible hand writing and a super thick accent. The textbook he wrote himself is down right deplorable tons of typos and a lack and every evidence of steps or what to do making it impossible to learn anything from him. If you have him swap to any other prof you can ASAP
Requires that you use his $140 textbook because he assigns homework from it. It is riddled with errors everywhere. Hard to follow accent. Adds surprise material to a test that he spends 1 hour before the start of the test to explain. Does not give sufficient time to complete the test & submit it electronically in the current Covid-19 times.
terrible prof whos textbook is full of typos and mistakes and and will regularly grade every single midterm and lab you write wrong and you have to correct it yourself and then force him to change the mark pls never take this prof, its the biggest mistake youll ever make
Dr. Lan's teaching style may be polarizing, plus the added difficulty of the course, but he's still very knowledgeable about the material. The course was well-organized and his assignments were challenging. Love his jokes during lecture!
I had a 99.4% going into the exam. Let's just say I didn't finish anywhere near a 99.4%. The course was a breeze, but I tell you, that exam was nothing like the course. Oh, and the exam was worth 42%.
It is difficult to understand what he's saying. He provides good examples for topics and grading is usually fair.
One of the worst profs I've ever had. You MUST buy a textbook which he authored with a lot of errors and incomplete/incorrect sol'ns. Prescribes endless homework that is sourced from his "textbook" and takes 4-6 hours depending on which chapter it is. Since his textbook is abysmal, lecture attendance is required except you can't hear a word he says
He's fine, a little hard to understand with the accent, but he provides a lot of useful examples during class. Everyone flaming him is only doing so because of the textbook, which I do admit is legitimately bad, but as a lecturer, he's fine as is.
Does not provide lecture notes or recordings of lectures. His required textbook for hmwk submissions is full of errors and typos. Hmwk questions are 90% computational, however his tests will have theory based MC and few long answer questions. Tests have problems harder then the ones given in the book. No replies to emails and is rude in office call
Dr. Lan is an okay professor. At the beginning, I couldn't understand anything because of his accent but if you go to each lecture, it gets easier to understand. For some concepts, he explained things in a very complicated way so the textbook was my bestfriend. Also his refusal to record any of the online lectures was annoying. Loved his jokes tho!
The material is not hard and self teachable. His textbook is full of errors but it is definitely usable, get the answer key. The only things you need to look out for are bs marking and few questions that shouldn't be on tests. Other than that it's fair. Not great but not remotely the worst prof you'll have. If you put in any effort you'll A it.
He is the worst professor I have ever seen so far. I cannot understand a single word he is saying and he doesn't post class recordings and lecture slides to help us too while other courses do. His teaching style is also the worst.
Honestly Lan has been one of my better professors this Winter. The course is straightforward and if you do the assigned homework, it's an easy course. If you slack and dont attend lectures, you'll be crying during his Midterms and Exams.
The guy sees his students as walking money bags; he wrote a mistake filled, badly written book that is mandatory as it contains the homework questions, of which three dozen or so are due every week @1.66% of your final grade per week. He also does not care about international students as he banned lecture recording even for those attending at 6AM.
As others have said, his text book is a badly written money grab. Also, you may struggle with his accent (he calls a diagonal matrix a "Dangolo Ma'x"). There's a ton of homework but its graded on participation so just make sure you submit something even if it's incomplete (I doubt they even open it). Classes are not recorded so you must attend.
No offence, but he is the worst professor ever. He also makes you buy a textbook which has a lot of mistakes in it and he was the one who wrote it. And I couldn't understand a word during the lectures due to his heavy accent. In general, get ready for a lot of self studying if you want to take a class with him.
Tests and Exams are super similar to homework, homework is mandatory and a lot but it is worth doing them. Prof doesn't record lectures, does not share notes. Do your homework and easy A for tests and exams as they are similar.
My man makes you buy a book for 140 bucks which has more typos than someone drunk texting. He doesn't record anything and doesn't post anything so if u don't pay attention 2 hours consecutively at 8am then get ready to depend on the book he wrote and MADE u buy which also is a bigger mistake than taking this course.
He is by far the worst professor to date he forces us to buy his book which is complete ripoff and not only that it is filled with stupid mistakes that make you want to quit. Also in 2021 where it is still online he refuses to post ANYTHING from the lectures so if you live in a different time zone you can kiss your sleep or your grades good bye.
Professor Lan's textbook has many helpful examples and errors. The midterm was very hard and different from the homework, but the final exam was fair. Lectures are mandatory since some things mentioned are not in the textbook. The TA gave great tutorials and quizzes were based on homework questions.
Makes everyone spend $200 on his textbook, homework is 10% of your grade so you have to buy it and you can't get away with an earlier edition. Book is riddled in typos, basically just wikipedia definitions, no explanations of concepts, such a joke. Weekly homework can be a lot and he doesn't drop low grades. Also found him to be pretty rude.
The 3 is for Janak, the phenomenal TA. It's true, you gotta pay for his textbook. Midterm was rather difficult, made you write a cover page and declaration for the midterm. Content is easy, but Kunquan somehow complicates it. He's a very helpful person and caring, though. It's for your own good.
A nice person, textbook is incredibly disorganized, no proper page numbering, and has a lot of mistakes. I am very surprised that a professional publisher allowed this to hit the market in any form. Lectures fairly poor, as were tutorials. TA Janak Bhanushali fine but quite messy and extremely late to mark submitted work. Overall do not recommend.
Professor Lan is ok. He makes you buy his textbook which is filled with mistakes, & you have to hand in weekly homework which sometimes is a lot. I had a hard time understanding him during class bc of his accent so I taught myself the course which is doable bc its not that hard. I thought tests/exams were very fair. Do the hw & you should be fine.
Bruhhhhhh this dude is an actual clown. Be prepared to not understand a single word he says. He is very rude, diverts questions, he is a
Not a bad/mean guy but has his issues. His thick accent makes it hard to keep up in lectures. He doesn't post any lecture notes online at all. On top of that, he wrote the course textbook which is disorganized, inaccessible and full of arithmetic errors (looks homemade). Overall you should be fine but try to get another prof for Linear algebra.
Being a first year engineering student in Lan's linear algebra class, I have taken note of the countless flaws Lan has including:Terribly bad note taking style, does not make slides, or record lectures, makes notes on scrap paper with VERY bad handwriting and distribution across the paper he is writing onforces students to write his own notes down
Not bad. The key to this class, however, was the textbook. The book was really well structured making a clear connection to the lecture especially since he wrote the book. This made understanding concepts quite simple and enjoyable. Not the best lecturer, but the class was quite entertaining, the expectations were clear and straightforward.
Dr. Lan is very unorganized and inconsiderate. He has a thick Asian accent and illegible writing, making it difficult to understand his lectures and his notes. Additionally, he writes his lecture notes on loose leaf paper and does not upload his notes and when writing on the paper, he does not follow a set order, so he may go from bottom up.
doesn't record his lecture or post his slides. i recommend either recording his lectures on your own on studying from him poopy textbook than you have to pay for. doesn't care about his students at all and whenever u ask him a question he just says refer to the course outline. good thing the subject itself is easy, the prof just sucks.
Had to buy the textbook he wrote for this class. It is full of typos and explains most concepts in a very roundabout way that makes the course almost incomprehensible. In addition, huge amounts of homework questions are expected weekly.
It's not so bad as people make it seem, but I will admit that Lan makes the course very self-studying reliant as he does not post any lecture notes. His textbook isn't the best as it has a number of errors and is a little confusing at times, but the quizzes and final are directly ripped from it, so his evaluations except for the midterm are fair.
Unclear lectures & notes based on an unreasonably expensive textbook he wrote which was a large waste of money and time to look at. Midterms & exams were never curved even though the average was below 50%. Homework questions were easy and nothing compared to midterms & exams.
He has a thick accent, which makes it hard to know what he's saying. He writes using pen and paper for lectures, but his writing is illegible. He wrote the textbook for the course, which was very dense and expensive. The only reason I did well was because I went to Dr. Majed's lectures instead, and even he had a hard time deciphering the textbook.
This professor forces us to use his own textbook which is very poorly written, formatted and full of typos making it confusing. Not only that, he has a very arrogant attitude when asking him NEW questions that were not answered by previous material. When you ask him a specific question, he tries to dodge it with a one word reply or short sentence.
He's fairly nice, but you get very trapped in this class because it's poorly managed. The entire course was a nightmare. The textbook is mandatory and custom made, and it has a lot of errors and clearly wasn't proofread. It's a shock that a publisher allowed this junk to be published. Makes learning impossible even if you try.
If you do your assigned homework and show up to class- you'll do great on quizzes, fine on midterm. He is not a good lecturer, I suggest seeking outside resources. If you go to his office hours for help with homework he will say "that's easy!", no, if it was easy, I would not be here right now, Dr. Lan.
He has a thick accent that makes it hard to understand on top of not explaining things really well. He wrote the textbook himself in which there are many, many mistakes and is hard to follow. He keeps basically harassing people to go up to the board and do an example, after which he'll be very mean if you do a mistake.
Heavy workload as there are weekly homework, some which took me over 6 hours to do each week. There are answers available in the textbook but the book is very buggy. Asides from the heavy workload, I would say exams are hard but if you attend the lectures and keep up with the weekly homework you should get a good grade.
I thought he was a good professor. I like how he got the class involved via zoom by doing questions and posting our answers. I thought he was funny and tried to make jokes. His textbook was useful for sample questions and supplemented the lectures. I did poorly on T1 b/c of the MC but still managed to get a good mark overall! Do the homework!!
He overcomplicated simple mathematics and made it difficult to understand. He is not lenient with any work and doesn't communicate well. This is made worse due to his thick accent.
Beyond Incomprehensible. Expects students to outrageous mental math while barely being able to do it himself. Wrote the mandatory textbook, which has so many errors Stevie Wonder could point them out. Doesn't know how to answer questions, writes notes too fast and overcomplicates simple vectors. After a week his lecture hall is empty for a reason.
Most awful professor for the toughest subject!!!
I never had this guy, BUT apparently ive heard he is a really bad prof and his textbook for lin alg sucks cuz it has so many mistakes in it.
sure he thinks he knows what he is doing during lectures but tell me why the textbook that HE MADE has so many mistakes in it
Man skips office hours. He makes you pay for his book which somehow has been published 5 times?? So many mistakes. He does not deserve is 250k+ salary plus book earnings. You would think at least his lectures would be good right? Nah, not true. Good luck with this man.
He does not show up for office hours. I ask him a question during class and he got angry. I did not understand what he was asking, so I opened his textbook (he wrote the book) and he yelled at me.
Harassed a student into dropping the course. He goes around the room with a marker begging students to solve problems. He is not helpful. Had covid symptoms and was not lenient about it. Would not settle for anything les than to first go to the doctor. I just wanted an assignment worth less than 1% to be ignored.
By far the worst professor I have ever had. Rudest professor ever and doesn't even show up to his own office hours. Terrible person, doesn't even speak English, making lectures extremely hard to understand and doesn't care about any students at all. If you get this man as your prof, good luck all the odds are against you
Overall very hard, prof. It is extremely hard to pass a class where you have no prior knowledge, such as linear algebra. He does not record nor post his slides. He writes on paper with a pen that he projects in front of the class, which makes it harder even to read. Although he is a hard prof, it is possible to pass his class by doing work outside.
Think the other reviews speak for themselves but watch out for this prof. He has an extremely thick accent so you'll have a hard time trying to understand him. But on top of that, he doesn't even teach well and is not a nice guy. He practically forces you to buy his textbook saying you'll "fail the quizzes and the course if you don't get it". Awful
Lan was very hard to understand and in turn, was very hard to learn from. The textbook also used in this course was written by him which had many typos and false answers. His handwriting is messy and very illegible during lectures. Overall not a very good professor and you would benefit way more from switching to another professor.
His textbook has so many mistakes, even the formatting is messed up, super annoying for the matrices. He forces you to answer questions on the board; you can hardly understand his writing unless you sit in the front row. All of his lectures are handwritten on the whiteboard, so you have to be in class to get notes. Lots of hw due every weekend.
His textbook sucks, formatting is messed up. His accent is heavy and writing is difficult to read, you have to sit at the very front row to understand both. You have to be in class to get notes because he writes on the whiteboard. Lots of homework every weekend. He forces you to answer questions on the board. Not helpful at all for exam review.
honestly, Professor Lan taught the course well. did the textbook have mistakes? yes, but they weren't that bad. was his accent heavy? not if you took it online. You didn't even need to go to class and could self-learn the whole course using the textbook. The evaluations were also very fair and very similar to homework questions.
No lecture notes/slides & lectures are very messy/hard to follow. He wrote the textbook which is full of mistakes, & so are the lectures, so good luck learning. He doesn't teach in the lectures, just puts up a question then takes 10 min break while you solve the question alone, when he does solve, lots of mistakes!
Easily one of the most over-hated profs at TMU. His accent can be little hard to understand, but its not hard to get used to. Not posting notes isn't an issue if you actually attend the lectures. The textbook is very useful. People complaining about the formatting here definitely just used a pdf they found online. Other profs are better though.
Unorganized, terrible textbook, doesn't reply to emails. I don't know what to expect on evaluations, there is no review or practice test like other courses on top of his poor teaching
He is the best! Course is divided into weekly homework assignments from his textbooks alongside 2 midterm tests and a final. Going to every single one of his lectures and taking good notes of the examples he does alongside doing the homework is sufficient in getting a high mark. Who cares if he has an accent. This is Math not French class.
"check d2l" - famous words from cumquan lawn.
Thickest accent I've ever come across yet. Doesn't post slides, will start writing exactly when class starts instead of waiting 10 minuties, all the labs are stuff from the homework. If you actually study as hard as you can, youll be fine.
the goat
take this course on chang if you can, avoid him at all costs
Textbook that he wrote is riddled with errors and despite doing every single practice question then reviewing and spending 30+ hours studying the material the final and midterm are way harder than the material in the text. I even reviewed previous exams from the TMU archives and Lan's final was way harder than any of the exams in the archives.
Awful textbook that he wrote which he forces you to use, is not even written in English but he used google translate for it. Very hard marker and writes unfair exams that even the other professors do not agree with. All the professors dislike him secretly.
THE BEST MATH PROF! I'm not saying this just because I received an A+, the professor is good. His lectures however are quite hard to understand and all he does is just examples but those examples are so helpful for exams. It's all open book and the exams were all so light, it comes from his lectures and there are not many questions.
Switch out right away!!! If you have him for MTH141 and you can't switch out, do yourself a favour and just attend ANY other prof's lectures or just drop the course. His textbook is absolutely useless. Doesn't have slides, just hand writes the lecture which he doesn't even post. Couldn't care less about the students failing.
The professor has a thick accent, but if you engage with the content and use resources like Unstuck study, you can do well. The textbook is tricky, but worth using.
You don't really need to attend class, just make sure to do the homework, the grading is decent but you need to purchase his textbook.
take this course with him through Chang rather than with another prof through tmu becuase its an easy A+. I redid the course with him because i did soooo bad through in person with tmu. He is super easy. There are hw completion marks, open book midterms (like 10 questions) with mc and 2 short answers. Final is super easy as well!! LOVE THIS GUY!!!
One of the best profs at TMU. If there was a GOAT of Linear, it was Kunquan Lan. The Lebron of Linear. The MJ of teaching.
Very inspirational professor who is very passionate about teaching linear algebra however does not know how to communicate and teach it properly. Midterm average was a 49.7% and prof did not care whatsoever to curve. He replied with "In your dreams" when someone from the class asked if there would be a curve for the class.
horrible professor. horrible accent. horrible to students. don't bother coming to class, just self-study (for the in-person ppl moving forward). he's passionate about algebra and calc but that's it. all the 1/5 comments are absolutely true. that's all I can say
A very passionate linear algebra professor, but he does have a thick accent which makes it hard to understand. I found that self studying is better than attending the lectures. The midterm and final exam were really easy if you practice the homework question he assigns.
He has a pretty thick accent, it was difficult to understand what he was saying most of the time. There are long pauses when he teaches for students to answer a question. He does not teach as much as he asks a question on the content, and gives students 5 minutes to respond. The cycle repeats for 3 hours.
the goat of all professors
studying his accent is harder than this course. thought he was speaking mandarin but turned out he was just moaning in class after he got a question right
Even though I don't have him as prof, he's managing this course and is doing a very poor job at it (like he always does apparantly). It's bad enough that his textbook has a number of embarrassing mistakes but it's even worse when there are errors also present in the solutions of his midterm as well which caused a lot of us to fail the midterm.
