Excellent teacher, take his class! Really cares! Not too hard if you keep up!
Lots of work, but if you stick with it you will learn a lot. Dicussions are fun
One of the best, is in touch with students and is VERY likable!
Lots of reading. Very energentic. He will make you work hard for you grade.
Kurt is an incredible prof! He is far superior to any English teacher I've had!
He's a great hero for bald people everywhere!! Go Kurt you stud!
Lots of energy, lots of reading, but lots of fun

The best Prof I've ever had! Very helpful and a fun guy
Best teacher Ive ever had, hes so helpful. class is fun & interesting. TAKE HIM
very very great prof! his classes are always fun!!!
Very helpful and caring - class work is slightly difficult.
BeSt PrOf I've had so far--funny, down to earth, helpful, lots of energy, helpful
Only the best prof ever....he is very clear, understanding, and fun...
He is a fun teacher. You have to do the reading and all assignments.
Great professor, fun to be in his class
Excellent teacher, good sense of humor, hard exams, but can be done
good guy, energetic, but a guy wont get as much out of the class as a girl
you have to work for your grade, but its worth it. very nice guy.
Kurt is one of the best profs I have ever had. He demands respect, but give it to him, and you'll have a great semester!
Kurt is an AWESOME prof! Helps you find and develop your passion for writing. Too bad he's going to Traverse City!!
Kurt is the best, he makes you work, but you learn so much it's worth it. I've never improved so much in one semester, and he is the cause! Totally willing to help, and very clear. Plus he plays this fun game to get to know everyone's names.
everything i was going to say has been said.
Nice and pragmatic enough, but has that "I'm a writing prof" quality. Organized, passionate; he has a famous quote written on the board everyday. Very hard grader, wants you to edit/revise your work more than you'd like. An "acquired taste&
Kurt was one of the best profs I've had at Grand Valley. He is very supportive and always willing to help out! TAKE HIM!!
KURT! God I miss Kurt. Its been 2 years since I've had him and he still remains in my mind as the best college prof I've had. Take him. He's the greatest. Oh, and do your work- he's a good guy to have on your side. Sling the Q, Kurt.
Had him for online class, and it was great. A lot of papers and weekly assignments, but the class was good. Also is a very nice guy
Kurt is the man! Although there is a lot of reading, and a lot of writing assignments, he still makes it fun and interesting. Class discussions are well regulated and organized.
He comes off as a great guy, but then hits you with the "I'm smarter than you" attitude, which never stops. If he could get over himself for a minute, he might actually be a good prof.
A good class, but he is really a stickler for grammar in papers, and wants you to fully explain your position. Is very straightforward and gets a bad wrap for telling students when they are bad at something (like grammar.) If you have an opinion, be prepared to defend it! I have him for 2 more classes, so this was a great warm up for later!
Helpful class. Instructor could've kept students more aware of their grades.
Makes you work for your grade, no free lunches from Kurt! Generally very helpful. Grades papers as if he’s on a one man mission to cure bad grammar and unclear writing. I would take more of his classes if I could. Try to be one of his favorites.
I love him, he's the best teacher I've ever had
Goes out of his way to help if you ask. Only teacher in Traverse City to have high expectations for us, toughest but best teacher.
He is a wonderful professor. I have never had someone help me so much with my writing.
The one of only two serious professors at the TC campus. High expectations and fair grading. I actually learned in this classroom!
Kurt one of the finest professors I've ever had. Extremely helpful if asked, but students must work for their grades. He is the gold standard for teaching. Amazing reading selection also.
Tough but fair. Takes a lot of time prepping to make a good course. Will not accept BS. chooses good books.
Kurt is a fantastic professor. He has high standards but as long as you can defend what you're saying he'll give you an A. He's hilarious and makes class very interesting. He also picks great selections to read.
Toughest class I ever had but the best too. Kurt's a great teacher but a tough grader.
has high expectations and grades hard. really good book choices and interesting class, but tough.
The readings were interesting and helped with understanding the subject. You can't get away with not reading the material because discussion makes up the majority of the class. He is a very hard grader. Gives lots of feed back on papers but doesn't allow for revisions, which I think is a great disservice.
Kurt is very much a passioniate teacher. However, like others on here have stated, he is stuck on himself and grades very hard. If he could get over himself for one minute, the classes he teaches would fill up much quicker. I wonder if he wonders why nobody will take his classes.
I took this course with Kurt two summers ago, and he remains one of the best profs I've had. He brings a lot of energy and enthusiasm to his teaching and knows his stuff. I'd take more classes with him if I could, but he doesn't teach often in Allendale. Highly recommended, take him if you can get him.
Funny guy and passionate about teaching. Really a tough grader when it comes to writing though. Discussions are great and made me want to come to class.
Probably the BEST professor I've taken here at Grand Valley. Would love to take all my English courses with him, if possible. Amazing man, unique & clear teaching method, and complete willingness to go out of his way to help students in any way he can, whether it pertains to the specific class or another English class, or simply life. Take him.
My advice: Take Kurt if you take your studies seriously, want to be challenged, and want a professor who wants to be challenged back. He's incredibly supportive of his students, gives creative leeway, and really respects the ideas and opinions of others. This is not an easy class (nor should it be), but it is highly rewarding!
Professor Bullock is a terrific teacher. The material was tough but he's good at explaining things and the discussions made me want to come to class. He's a tough grader and really pushes you to think for yourself but he's also funny and very helpful. I want to take him again for 495.
Prof Bullock was amazingly helpful at guiding students in this capstone English course. I would like to have another English class with him, if I wasn't graduating. He was very willing to meet or chat over email about anything related to the thesis project. He really made me, and I think everyone in this class, feel like we could conquer this.
Required participation. Attendance not mandatory but you need in class notes to pass the test. Good class discussions.
He's a nice teacher and tries to explain things but gets off topic sometimes. Grades somewhat hard on papers but you don't get much homework. You need to participate in class though for a grade
Bullock is my favorite professor at GV by far! He's challenging and stimulates his students beyond what they know. I totally recommend him for people who enjoy intellectual debates and discussions. Yes he does get sidetracked a lot but everything will be relative. Save all your exams because the same content will appear again.
Professor Bullock said at the start of the semester that this class would change the way I thought about things and he was right. He's funny but intense and puts lots of notes on the board so you need to come to class, but I always wanted to anyway because of the good discussions. He's a great teacher and I hope to have him again.
There are no tests or quizzes, only three papers due in the last month of the semester. I like the class and him as a person, but the papers that he wants are long and he's a tough grader. I honestly thought one of my papers was badass, but I got a C+. Mistakes he thought there were, could be argued about. He was basing it on his opinion not fact.
His lectures are interesting / entertaining and he encourages open class-wide discussion. It's a good idea to get your hands on all of the assigned novels as early as possible. You move through them pretty quickly and the weekly quizzes focus heavily on what's happening in each novel as you read it.
Dr. Bullock is one of the kindest and most encouraging professors I have ever encountered. He genuinely wants his students to succeed and provides a clear path to an A. He is accessible outside of class and loves to help students during office hours. He is approachable and insightful. One of the best profs at GVSU.
Kurt Bullock is AMAZING. He has truly influenced who I am as a person. His course is difficult but I'm not joking you will want to work hard because the material and his teaching is that good. He is so passionate about what he does. MY FAVORITE THING ABOUT HIM IS HE DOES NOT PUSH HIS IDEAS DOWN YOUR THROAT, he lets you form your own opinions!
If you need to take ENG 216, take it with this professor. He is incredible. I took this class as a 6-9 and still loved it. There are 3 essays and 3 exams, which are definitely challenging, but it was well worth it. Just be sure to take notes, and I would suggest flash cards for the exams.
It's tough only picking three tags. To continue, participation matters, he's inspirational, hilarious, has clear grading criteria, gives good feedback, and I would take any of his courses.
He seemed really cool, but when it comes to grading he is tough. You only have 6 grades in the whole class. I have aced all my english classes in the best and have been told by professors to be an english major, but he told me that I shoud not be able to proceed farther in the Education program and that my papers were terrible.
I really liked professor Bullock at first. This is the second class I chose to take with him because I really liked his teaching style. However, when it came to grading he was very tough and his comments were very rude. He was always telling me what I did wrong but not how to fix it. As far as the class, it was incredibly easy.
Professor Bullock is the best professor I have ever had in 5 years of college. His comments always told me the exact problem and I was able to fix them for my next paper. He is a tough grader, but he is understanding and fair. Requires more than memorization, but if you can argue your point well, he will often give points. Highly recommend.
Professor Bullock is an amazing teacher. He pushes you outside your comfort zone slowly and truly encourages critical thinking, which I have found to be rare in my "higher education." He does a great job of relating everything to our lives and not just literature.
Best professor I have had at GVSU. He made a 6-9 fly by! Lots of class discussion that is beneficial for both inside and outside the class. Grades on 3 essays, 3 exams, and participation is important. Gives incredibly helpful feedback on your work, and he's a good guy all around. Take any of his classes if you have the chance!!!
He's a great professor. Very loud and energetic also kind of blunt, cares about his students and making sure you understand the concepts. He also gives life lessons Tests are pretty basic but you will have to apply the concepts he teaches. Notecards are a great tool for this class, if you have them you will pass. Great professor, would take again.
You're only graded on two papers and two exams- SO BE CAREFUL! For the exams you better be good at memorizing concepts, but if you can do that, this class should be a breeze. Kurt is a really funny guy and knows how to make class fun while still being serious about the topics. Overall, a really great dude and I hope I can take more classes with him
Best prof ever!
He allows for open discussion in class, which is really a requirement for a good English prof, and openly admits when he doesn't know something, which is required for a great one. He'll research answers, consider students' viewpoints, and encourage creativity. I highly recommend this class, but be prepared to think on your feet. Tough but fair.
Professor Bullock is extremely passionate about not only material, but knowing each and every student. He gave very specific feedback on each and every paper we turned in, and I can truthfully say he improved my writing immensly. If you have the chance to take him, do it!
My favorite prof I've EVER had. I am taking my 3rd class w/ him next semester and ONLY want him for my English capstone. He cares IMMENSELY about you succeeding in school AND life. I go to him instead of my actual advisor b/c I trust how much he wants to help! He has helped me grow as a student and a person. One of the best people I've ever met!
Professor Bullock is an amazing prof. He really works with students until they understand exactly what to write about and also works with due dates. He is super funny and has a great personality. But if you dont read the books, you will not do well at all.
Professor Bullock is absolutely amazing. This is my second class in a row with him, and I have already signed up for my third consecutive class. Bullock is one of the main reasons my writing has grown so much. His feedback is amazing and he truly cares about his students. Everyone in the english department should take a class with Bullock!
Honestly, take any class that Dr. Bullock teaches. I've taken 3 classes with him and I wish I could take more. His classes are discussion-based, so it's always worth going to class. He's a super fair grader and gives you a TON of feedback on assignments so it's impossible not to do well. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
PLEASEEEEEE take him if you have the chance. He is phenomenal. I learned so much from his teachings and his life values! He truly TRULY cares about each and every one of his students. Take him! You wont regret it.
The textbook is easily found online in PDF form! It isn't too important, but helps grasp concepts better and it's a good read. Professor Bullock explains the concepts very well too. His class is very rarely boring. There are 2 essays and 2 tests, none of which are very hard. I definitely recommend any class with this professor!!
10/10 would recommend Professor Bullock. He takes the time to leave a lot of feedback and really cares about his students! I took Literature of War with him and it was a really interesting class. He even makes voice memos and submits them as feedback on papers, which is really nice especially for an online class. I plan to take more of his classes!
Dr. Bullock is one of the best professors I've ever had. He left detailed feedback on each assignment including on the papers themselves, in the comment box in the grade book, and he recorded voice feedback, too. He was incredibly helpful in guiding my thesis paper, and I wish I had the ability to take every single class he teaches.
Awful grader, doesnt give feedback to help your grade.
No lecture unless you can squeeze in an 8pm zoom call once a week on the reading. Journals were easy, but he was nit picky on the actual essays. You basically teach yourself. He takes FOREVER to grade and feedback is subpar.
Literally my fav prof at GV, as this is the 3rd time I've taken one of his classes. Very tough grader but genuinely has made me a better writer. Reasonable workload, great discussion, and super interesting literature in every course I've taken with him. Super nice guy too
Can't believe I am paying money to take this class. We are not being TAUGHT anything at all. Each week read a chapter about complex ideas and then are supposed to write insightful discussions about them. But, he doesn't give any lectures or class time, so we don't learn about it. We don't know what we are scored out of, and we get NO feedback.
This class has 2 papers and 2 exams. You need to learn the concepts to pass the exams. Take your time and research your paper topics. He is a tough but fair grader. He honestly made me a better writer and I'm happy I took his class.
Prof was very accomodating when things came up in my personal life. Learned a lot in this class. Prof is a hard grader but clearly is because he wants you to improve. Personally, my feedback was good. He would give me resources that could potentially help me get a better grade on my next paper.
Worst professor I had to deal with during the pandemic. Confusing directions with little to no interaction with the students. Im sure hes a perfectly fine teacher in person, but god forbid we end up in this situation again, avoid him at all costs.
Expects Havard grad school level thinking. Have to read a book&stories without explanation/clarity, then write a deep level thinking discussion board based on selective prompts. The discussion board is the length of an essay and if your thoughts are not deep or different enough, you'll receive a poor grade. Very harsh grader. Hard to succeed.
The best professor I have ever had. I struggled in the beginning to understand what was required of me, but once I reached out he helped me so immensely. He has made my writing level exceed my expectations. Furthermore, he even reached out to congratulate me on how far I had comehe cares about his students! The discussions are so interesting too!
Bullock is amazing. Take this class with him if you want to stretch your thinking in a real and meaningful way. He's clear on what he expects for essays and DB posts. It's difficult to get the hang of at first, but practice makes perfect. His interactions on the DB are always helpful to clear up confusion or confirm that you're on the right track.
This class was very discouraging, overall I am an A/B average student. I currently have a D. He does not provide any real teachings on how to write a clear and cohesive critical approach essay. He expects Ivy League level critical thinking and is one of the harshes graders I've had, he is not a good professor to anyone who isn't an english major.
Professor Bullock, is a respected professor, he is a tough grader at the beginning but after doing bad on an assignment he gave me resources I needed to help me succeed in this class, going to him when you need help is very helpful as he gives great feedback on your essays before turning them in.
Throughout this course it is heavily based on reading and writing. This professor expects extremely high levels of thinking and writing skills. In addition, this course is set up with four 100 point essays so it is extremely hard to determine your grade based on big assignments. If you are not an English major this class is probably not for you!
Prof Bullock facilitates fascinating discussions and really challenges students to stretch their thinking. I struggled to get the hang of the course at first, but Bullock's high expectations only helped me grow as a writer. He leaves amazing feedback and truly cares about the content and about his students' success. Cannot recommend him enough!
Professor Bullock was amazing! His lectures were so interesting and the class always went by so quick. It's like being in class with your grandpa, he is that sweet. He may be a difficult grader at times, but he gives great feedback on how to fix your mistakes. Please take his class you won't regret it.
Expectations are extremely high for all four assignments he assigned. Gave a lot feedback that was not necessary and overall his feedback was quite discouraging.
Professor Bullock is a tough but caring instructor. His high expectations pushed me to become a better writer. Unstuckstudy was a lifesaver for essay prep - don't miss his informative lectures though!
