was a fun class, but Burch was a terrible teacher. Don't take unless have to!!!!!!
Very nice teacher. Very fair
Knows the subject matter to the "T"; either u read the text: do great, or don't:fail. Sheds light on out-of-class concerns, which will likely cause outburst amoungst classroom. Funny
if your not good with attedance, dont take his class. He has daily tests that are very hard and 25% of your grade. Alot of people did bad. His class is very hard! If you dont like reading the chapters before the teacher goes over them, dont take his class. He tests you everyday about subjects he hasnt discussed.
He's a good teacher. He has a sense of humor and explains everything really well. Those who complain about reading chapters shouldn't be in school. If you do all the assigned work, it should be a fairly easy class.
He is a awesome teacher! Just briefly read the chapters before the tests and you'll do awesome! He has a great sense of humor that keeps the class motivated

I Loved him and his class. He doesn't like jokers or slackers in his class. He responds well to people that are there and interested in learnig. He is great. Really makes you think. My class had a bunch of slacker, fresh from highschool kids that were not ready for college. He is willing to help and is reasonable, but you have to ask for it.
BOOOOOO, unless you are really into Politics and have no trouble understanding, you'll be good, but if they bore you to death, and you don't keep up with the news daily, YOUR SCREWED!!!!
Horrible Teacher. Is VERY Condescending. He thinks every person in college is stupid and that none of us care about politics. I wanted to learn, but now because of him I DON'T. DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER!!!!
Can you say JERK!! Not helpful, doesn't help explain what you read in the book. He basically reads parts of the book to you and then says you should get this and then tests you on it the next class.
Burch is an elitist,he is condescending,on the first day of class he said he was more interested in learning taking place rather than teaching Neither is taking place. He’ll quickly go over the material if he’s short for time & then test us the next day. He’s great at reading from the book. You’re better off skipping class & reading the book yourself.
I liked this teacher alot. His lectures are interesting becuase he is sarcastic. He has a very dry sense of humor, but I like that. You need to be ready for work though. I give him an A++
Burch is a great professor. He is what he calls and "equal opportunity offender"...very sarcastic and he has a sense of humor that you will not like if you offended easily. But he will never preach his opinion and his jokes should not be taken too personally. He is very helpful and enjoys teaching this subject.
He's amazing, a really bright guy. He has a dry sense of humor which makes the lectures a ton more interesting. Make sure you read the book and listen during class and you won't have a problem. He'll reward you if you pay attention and ask questions. A great teacher.

Great teacher great sense of humor
Talks down to his students. I get that things are tough sometimes but he made it worse. His midterms are easy because they are all the individual tests combined, keep these and study them!!!
Can we say JERK? I retook the class with McGurire after dropping this dudes class. Specifics don't matter to me. He will be a great prof after he is fired a few times.
Very nice teacher, understandive. If you ask him for help, he'll help you. If you pay attention to lectures he directly andswers test questions, like you can read the test and remember him saying it in exact words. Funny and his lectures are wortj comming to class or to just find out more about politics through a creative, interesting lecture.
Complete ****!! Acts like our generation is horrible. Lectures are boring! Hard to keep up with reading/test. Tests are VERY tricky. I read every chapter and got C's. Only good thing is that the midterm and final are the same questions from previous test....so just study off of old tests. Grades on a curve.
if you dont like poliics, and are taking it just for some credits, DO NOT have this professor. he hates this generation and if you have a small class he skips half of the things you need to learn before the tests. if you talk and give your opinion he might start to warm up to you but not likely..not recommended.
He only talks down because he knows our society doesn't pay attention to politics, which are important. His tests are WORD FOR WORD the book, but no other assignments. All you have to be willing to do in his class is act interested, get good grades, and interact with him in class
Burch teaches right out of the book, so tests are pretty easy. He's funny in a British, dry humour type of way. He provokes people to share their opinions because he wants them to honestly think about what's being taught. I looked forward to his class every day that I had it because he made me think for myself and formulate opinions.
If you read the textbook, the tests will be easy. His lectures are very interesting - he makes you think about society in a way you haven't before. He's pretty honest, so don't try to argue a point to him, he will make you feel insecure. Make sure to study and you'll do fine in his class. Participate too.
Don't take his U.S. Politics class unless you actually want to think outside of the box, formulate your own opinions, and learn new things in a way that isn't boring. You'll be better off if you take notes as well as read the book and listen, since some test q's are out of class lectures. I would recommend him to anyone that truly desires to learn.
Mr. Burch was a pretty good teacher. He really does make you think and his tests are both on his lecture notes and the book. Lots of chances to make points up by knowing the vocab though. He's very willing to help you in any way possible. He makes you think and really doesn't like our generation that much.
Total jerk. Had surgery and was in hospital for a month. Wouldn't let me make up anything and failed me. Much better POLS teachers at normandale for your money. I recommend LOWRY!!!!!
Most intelligent professor I have ever had. He knows exactly what he is talking about. I wish I could have him again. Tests are ridiculously hard, don't worry if you get a D or D+ because that will turn into a B or B+ after the curve. Very smart teacher.
Horrible teacher. He loves to make the students feel inferior to him, complete jerk..I missed class twice and tried to make up a quiz which he JUST decided to not allow after I came back. So I was screwed. Then he decided to fail me. You would only do well in his class if you argued with him.
Professor Burch is not an easy teacher, he can be very hard, intimidating, and mean. But I really like him, he pushes students out of their comfort zone. He is very opinionated but allows students to voice their rebuttle. If you really like politics, take Burch.
Burch IS THE BEST TEACHER AT NORMANDALE and has every right to say so. He should be teaching at a better college and I feel bad that he has to teach here. His tests aren't that hard either--theyr'e multiple choice!--all you have to do is study a little.
I hated politics and government before I took his class. I was required to take a politics course. I LOVE HIS TEACHING STYLE!!! I was actually interested in what he had to say. Yes, he is a difficult teacher and grader (and i did fail our first test) but i really wanted to learn from him, I LIKE LEARNING ABOUT POLITICS NOW!!
Horrible class. Would've skipped, but felt obliged to attend as a PSEO student. Lectures consist of him reading the textbook aloud-no joke. Also, though it has nothing to do with his languid teaching style, he wore the same orange vest every class? Struck me as odd.
Burch's tests are hard, but he's a good teacher. Go to class, read your book. Questions on test are more from the book than anything. Do what you can and ask for help, it is a pretty confusing topic to start off with but Burch wants to make it fun for you.
Do not take this class with this professor. He is completely unhelpful and extremely disrespectful to his students. He feels that he is entitled to chastise and make snide comments towards his students. If you try to participate and he makes his tests very difficult and the book is his only tool.
Not a nice guy, not a good teacher. Classes are what you make of them but honestly, I didn't learn a thing.
I hate politics but he made it interesting to listen to. He was a good teacher that didn't teach too much out of the book.
excelent professor. knows the material covered so well he has been approached to write the damn textbook! if you do bad in his class you would have to slack off alot. alot of people say hes an ass, thats his sense of humor. hes funny. unless your prepared to do whats expected of you in a college classroom dont sign up for his class.
I learned more then I would ever care to learn in a 3 credit class. This guy is mean?its great to see a Prof. at Nor. treat his students as such unlike many who just want to be friends. He is ambiguous enough to make you work hard on everything in this class and clear enough to let you achieve an A. Extremely hard class but it builds character.
This was the most negative learning environment I have ever participated in. He degrades is students and he defames almost everyone. This guy should not be teaching...
Horrible teacher, nothing but tangets mixed in with lots of incoherent rambling so you eventually drift off because he's so random, you're not sure what to listen too. He got mad at a guy in class and stormed out before any student speed walking out. Mocks & ridicules everyone, even the quiet girl who was obviously painfully shy mocked her for it
Blah Blah Blah.. Burch rock's. You all know it. His class was the first college class I took and WOW! He's know joke. 4 test's, no attendance policy, lot of reading and memorizing. Every class was interesting. If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen!!!
Fair teacher. I missed quite a few lectures because I had more important things to do and studied for the tests, did well. Treats you like an adult, has common sense.. something quite a few professors at Normandale lack. Test covered a decent amount of material, but not really that hard. Final was compilation of questions from previous tests.
Burch is a good teacher, and if you show up to class class you will learn a lot. In order to do well in his class you do have to memorize the vocab and attend lecture regualry. his sense of humor is cynical to say the least, but as long as you're not to up tight you should find his class enjoyable because he's always very energetic.
I took his Political Science class last semester and let me warn you... His tests are ONLY vocab and material out of the book. In class every day he doesn't teach what is going to be on the test, he rambles on about current events. I gained nothing from that class but it did lower my GPA.
Awesome teacher. You're expected to read and yes, lots of vocab. As he once said, "Students ****in study". Be engaged is what he really wants and it is just sad that some students, even me, aren't. Ask him about his favorite student, and that's the bar he sets us to. I wish he taught more classes. Totally recommend him. He's fair.
Good teacher - He keeps his political opinions to himself, really funny, entertaining lectures. He only focuses on the broader issues of politics while disregarding the small things you'll never remember. Grade is determined almost completely from tests. Go to class and study vocab for success in this class. He is, however difficult to approach.
I really liked him. Going into the class i really had no interest whatsoever, but he is very enthusiastic and jokes around a lot. He makes it more interesting and tries to get the class involved. Most of the material is straight from the book. No assignments-just midterms. Study vocab!
VERY entertaining class - Burch deserves a spot in between The Daily Show and Colbert Report. Going to class is like sitting in the audience of a political comedy show! VERY easy class - NO HOMEWORK the entire semester except for one 5 page paper. I spent an average of one hour a week studying for the class and ended up with an A! TAKE THIS GUY!
has a great sense of humor, but its really hit or miss if you'll like him or not. i thought he was great, but i just stayed quiet to avoid getting made fun of and watched him ridicule everyone else. just stay quiet in his class and enjoy the show :)
he is reALLY NICE
great content, learned a variety of interesting material. 4 papers, no homework. highly recommend
If you are even remotely interested in politics, take his class. He knows what the hell he's talking about, and will make you laugh while explaining it in some entertaining way. Grading consisted of 4 papers that would be more at home in a 300-400's level class, but it's not too hard to manage.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! I took US Politics online. His assignment description is very basic and vague. I have received an A in every one of my classes but had to drop early because of his inability to deal with me professionally. When I challenged his grading he REFUSED TO MEET ME on campus and his comments were degrading & inappropriate!!!
A lot of the learning was done by looking into things on your own through any source rather than just textbook. Tough on discussion/assignment content but reasonable. I really enjoyed this class! I did not have any political interest before but I do now!
Worst professor I've ever had. Knows nothing of the political world, and penalizes conservative speech.
He is the worst professor ever. He is arrogant and not helpful at all. He took over for Philip Lowry?s Middle East politics class after Lowry got ill. He grades everything based on his views. Don?t ever take his classes.
Love this class!!! I think that he makes it much easier to understand, and the class is very entertaining. He's enthusiastic and helps you when you ask. He always answers your question to the best of his ability. Just do not get on his bad side.
Burch is a fantastic teacher. Prior to taking this class I had a very limited interest in politics. He shows that you can find humor in it. His tests are difficult, and he is an editor so be sure to spend a lot of time of your papers. He is a certified neutral in the state of Minnesota- he doesn't grace your opinion, but how well you defend it.
I'm am still not intersted in politics, even after taking this course. But, I do understand it much better. He's very sarcastic and energetic, so classes are interesting. Tests are difficult, be sure to study. He may grade certain people easier than others based on how well he likes them... so get on his good side! Decent teacher overall.
I recently took an online class of his and it was a very bad experience. He isn't helpful, when people had questions he sent out condescending emails. If you want to know how smart he is, don't worry he will tell you. I would avoid this guy at all costs, I wish someone would have warned me.
This online class was tough, but if you are in school to learn, it is the right place to go. He expects a lot out of his students. I was pushed. He did have a tantrum over the class's views on affirmative action once(he likes it apparently; the majority of us didn't). But I valued his feedback on my papers and his curriculum was mostly good.
Professor Burch was amazing. He was unbelievably helpful outside of class. Pay attention and show common decency and you will do well. Do not take for an easy A! He expects you to put forth effort. My favorite professor by far.
So good. So hott. Bangin.
He might have been going through a mid life crisis when i took this class. After the first two weeks half the class dropped. He told us all we would never amount to anything and might as well give up. He was so unhelpful and many times just left class mid way through. He cusses way to much and ruins the class. I do not recomend him!!!
Kurt changed the entire syllabus a few weeks into the semester because the students were complaining about the amount of work they were asked to do. he was a little inconsistent with the schedule but very helpful if you asked. he's very sarcastic but i didnt mind it. his tests are east if you put the work in. i thought he was a decent teacher...
Professor Burch was great. I took his online class. During the few couple of weeks he cut all of the work except for weekly essays due students complaining it was too much work. I was a bit disappointed in that because we are here to learn. Good thing I educate myself outside of school. If you do the work and show interest you can't fail.
knows what he's talking about, but makes it hard to comprehend. if you have little interest in politics, this class won't help you understand at all.
I believe he seriously enjoys giving C's because he feels that is a good grade. You will never be right and seriously never take this course over the summer.
Do not take this class. I took it as an online summer class. There is an insane amount of ridiculous "busy work" due almost every day, with the equivalent of a Research Paper due every week. (He calls it an "Essay") It isn't. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS OR PROFESSOR.
If you are looking for an easy A consider something else. If you are in school to actually learn and develop critcal thinking skills Burch is the best. His style is unique and worth experiencing. He will never give you an answer, rather, he will respond to your question with another question that will lead you to conclude the answer yourself.
Do not take US politics with Kurt Birch! I don't think he understands that the class is 3 credits, not 4. The class is extremely dry and boring and his instructions make no sense. I would recommend him as a teacher to no one, and same with his class. He doesn't participate in class discussions and doesn't respond when you ask questions.
Mr. Burch is as terrific a person, as he is a teacher. It is more helpful to read the reviews from students to learn who are the slackers, and who are here to learn. Excellent professor, amazing human being! If you have critical thinking skills, you'll do well- if not, you will write nasty notes about not learning.
Burch is a really great professor. I took his online politics class and I really learned a lot. He's great about answering questions, participating in discussions, and making you think. However, this is definitely not a class for slackers or people who don't like to write. I would highly recommend taking his class to anyone interested in politics.
His online class requires quite a bit of textbook reading for weekly discussions, and online research for essays. All in all, I learned a lot in his online class. He could work on clarifying assignments better.I would recommend him. He is a nice person and teacher. If you are motivated to do well and participate in class, you will do well.
The class was mediocre, but there's lots of homework. Seems like too much effort for what the class was worth. Make it past that and you'll at least get a B.
This class was online. The professor was not helpful at all. We had six essays and for a couple of them more then one peron askead questions on them and he didnt respond until three or four days after the assignment was due. Horrible teacher, he just gives up if you ask a question.
I took Intro to World Politics with Burch and it was an amazingly interesting class. It actually made me decide to major in political science. However, the way he teaches is very inconsistent and sometimes hard to follow. Great guy to have a conversation with though.
Great Teacher!!! One of my absolute favorites. You have to work hard though, but he's great. And he's funny as well. He is very smart and knows his stuff. I'd take his class again!!
I took the Online 5 week summer course. If you are going into this class and have little to no interest in politics, your writing skills are sub-par, or you have poor time management skills then i would stay far away from this course. It is very time intensive, however you will learn a lot. Kurt provides great feedback, if you put in the effort.
Really flexible teacher, will tweek the syllabus by a mile if the class agrees. Very strict on attendance, assignments, and have to be on time, but otherwise an interesting good teacher. No test or quizzes, only papers, assignments, and attendance.
Insightful, fun, and entertaining. More class discussion than lecture. The syllabus wasn't very clear but his expectations were: do the work, show up to class, learn. If you don't feel like you're on track, talk to him. Burch will work with you to make sure you're understanding the subject. You definitely have to work for the grade.
He was a really interesting person who was flexible with the situation. He wasn't too harsh of a grader. He made the material more interesting than it actually was. Plus you never needed to take notes!
He was a really good teacher and isn't too hard of a grader. I took this course online and it is assignment heavy but is manageable if you stay on top of it all. If you do a thorough job on the assignments he gives you extra credit on them!
Most of your grade is decided by participation in class discussions. I failed every quiz and test in the class, because I'm just not a good test taker. But because I participated in the discussions and turned in the assignments, I received 100% as a final grade. Extra credit is given on regular assignments with good work. Often 125%-150%.
Kurt Burch was one of the best profs I've had. Although the class wasn't "easy", he was fair in his grading and if you ask for help, it's there. Lots on online stuff, like discussions and things along those lines. Easy tests. Interesting view points, he's very liberal.
Funny teacher, enjoyable class
His class is by no means easy but if you read his very lengthy syllabus and you stay on top of and put effort into your work getting an A should not be a problem. He offers tons of extra credit, he is also extremely funny and knowledgable in politics. If you're okay with settling for a good teacher but giving up alot of work Kurt is the man for you
Completely changed my view of politics and has honestly made me like politics more. Before, I though it was just an "old man" subject and knew very little about it, but now I can see and have learned why it's so important for our generation to be involved. The class was engaging and fun as well. I would take this again with him if I could.
He lets you know right away what work will need to be done all semester. Do your work early on and the class will be a breeze
Mr. Burch's class was defiantly tough, however, the lectures were always very interesting and he was always there to help you through it, if needed. Although it will not be the easiest class you take, he is very passionate about the material and feels "in-touch" with the students
Kurt always had an interesting point and would take the direction of lectures where students wanted it to go, but has a lengthy syllabus and can be unclear. Barely any homework as long as you know something about politics most assignments were optional besides 2 essays.
One of my most favorite professors on campus. Always ready to answer any question, course related or not. The only thing are the required papers. He requires weird formatting and it's difficult to get used to for a writing major. Be opinionated and have the reasoning to follow it up, you'll get an A easily!
Made me think about US Politics in a new way. I highly recommend Professor Burch.
Worst teacher ever, do not take this guy.
This course was very heavy in Politics along with a review of Government. He wasn't very clear on the assignments that were given and would counterargue your questions right in front of the class. Probably want to write down some notes while he talks aswell, they are on some tests and critical for essays. Very one sided on his Political view.
The syllabus is just a long document (235 pages) of all of the assignments for the semester which he will change throughout semester without notification. We found out we had a 12 paragraph essay due one day prior. His assignment descriptions do not clearly represent his expectations for a perfect score;his feedback doesn't represent the assignment
I love Political Science and this class was taught very well. I'm someone who really likes to take the "wrong" opinion, and I was still graded fairly, even if he didn't agree with me. I have a lot of respect for that. I've decided my major will be Political Science, and this class is what made my decision clear.
Kurt has been my favourite professor I have ever had the opportunity to learn under. He didn't soapbox his beliefs onto us, he brought out the opinions we carry and made us better analyze them to either help us reconfirm what we stand for or to question what we stand for.
BEST TEACHER EVER!!!!!!
Online is harder than in class. In online there are 2 essays that are worth like half of your grade combined. The weekly discussions are insightful, but he grades each post like it's a paper. The weekly activities require you interview a ton of people, which gets old fast. I learned a quite a bit from the course, but it was a lot of work.
One of the best professors I have ever had. There is a little bit of homework but it is easily manageable. His lectures and very funny and insightful. I highly recommend Professor Burch to anyone who has the opportunity to take his class.
Hilarious teacher and I really enjoyed the class but man does he grade the essays harshly. Other than the essays everything else in the class is really easy. I only opened the online textbook once the whole course and still got a B. Tough grader on essays but I still would recommend him, especially for his humor.
He's easily the most hilarious teacher I have ever had . His lectures are really fun, you wont be bored.
In general, he leaves the class really open ended as far as choosing what to discuss, due dates, etc. You're only graded on a few projects/papers which are fairly easy as long as you articulate your thoughts well. His lectures are amazing, I'd definitely recommend taking his courses.
Good professor, and he cares about his students, but I was really disappointed by this class, Political Thought. The course description led me to believe that wed be covering individual ideologies. Instead, we spent about two days on them, and the rest of the course was focused on issues important to him (Race, globalization, etc.).
Amazing, amazing teacher. I emailed him about personal stuff that was going to cause me to behind on assignments and he was so nice. Really caring. Lots of homework for the online classes but lots of time to finish the assignments. Replies to emails quickly.
His Intro to Politics course is 3 credits but he grades as if it were 4 or 5. If you do not need a class like this for your major, do not take it. He is a very harsh grader with outrageous expectations. His feedback on assignments is lengthy and often has critiques about topics that we never learned about or discussed in class. Take someone else!!!
If you hold any conservative beliefs do not take this class. I offered my viewpoints during class discussions and I was berated. Of course nearly the whole class was composed of liberals so he got a lot of laughter from the group; Not fun!
Kurt is passionate about educating students and is overall so brilliant. He is very clear on what he wants in his assignments but be ready to elaborate like you never have before. I learned a lot in his class and Im sad I waited until my last semester to take his course. Highly recommend!
This online course should be your last choice in your life.
I love his teaching philosophy of problem-posing. However, I do not enjoy the way he applies it. I have another professor, Dan Darling, who uses the same method with much more success. I feel as though Kurt is fighting with his students, where as Dan is working through problems WITH his students. I wish Kurt would create more of an open environment
Burch is the most engaging professor Ive had. He has the best lectures, where hell get very energized and passionate about the topic. He tries to get the class to think about their opinions; he doesnt want you to be a sheep. The only frustrating thing about his class is that he tends to not have a very clear syllabus. He likes to experiment.
Best professor I've ever had. If you need POLS1130 for credit, take his online class. I have 5 things total, each with clear instructions. Very easy grader and reply's to emails very fast. 10/10 would recommend.
Kurt is the best professor at Normandale. His online class is designed to be the perfect class for every student. There are only a few things that you are required to do, so if you don't care about the class you don't have to spend much time with it. If you are interested in the class, Kurt posts amazing lectures/resources to learn about politics.
Burch let the class lead but since people didn't participate it became a pretty frustrating experience. He also bases the class off of a few assignments so your grade is entirely tests and a massive essay. During corona online learning he did communicate with us and remind us about assignments. Just wish he taught himself more!
Top 5 worst professors I have ever had at Normandale. I will cut him some slack, as this semester was messed up due to Covid. However, tests don't have anything to do with the book, he messages you 5-7 times a week about random stuff or even to say he has nothing to say (I'm not kidding) and is unorganized. 15 page paper at the end of the semester.
Burch seems like a really funny guy if you get to know him, but not a great professor in my opinion. He sends out many emails and when I sent him one, he didnt even reply. I poured my entire brain into the end of course essay he gave and only received a C. Got to admit , his class is really simple so all the students complaining were really lazy
We were graded on 4 unit exams and one final exam. In my opinion, they were difficult because I never did the readings, but on the second try (same questions for each attempt), I always got an A. He assigns a 15 paragraph essay, but doesnt seem to be a hard grader. Overall, hes responsive when contacted, and his course isnt too bad.
If you want an "easy A" don't take. He doesn't have the mentality of a community college professor. He's equitable to teachers at 4-year universities. I highly recommend you take freshmen comp before you consider this class. He is a professional editor and the class requires 2 final essays so prepare to have at least 4 drafts for an A. Overall GOOD
Online class was disorganized, more helpful when COVID hit. 4 unit tests, the textbook doesn't help. Tests 1-2 Q's from tbook, the rest are from his own materials or not at all. Wish he provided more of his own materials. If you usually write well in your ENG classes, you'd do fine on his final essay (40%). Helped me with my Qs about my paper.
You can tell he loves what he's teaching. Super engaging and fun discussions about politics, without him revealing his political opinions. Super funny jokes as well. Very test heavy with not that much from the textbook, more fun his notes. Wish I could take more of his classes. GREAT prof
Took this course during the transition of classes going online. Started in person great at lectures & getting class involved. Downside has no structure or clear on due dates and what assignment is due & moving this class to online made it harder and more difficult to understand. His teaching style and this class should only be in person.
He gives you clear instructions and the quizzes are relevant to the book. He has great communication with students. I wish I would have taken the class in person but due to Covid, it was online. Just read the book and make sure you understand it. If you are not familiar with the subject, it can be very difficult. Great professor and I recommend him
4 unit tests, he sends out a lot of email reminders which were helpful. Tests were essentially the study guide so just learn from those. The study guides tended to be mostly from the textbook, some from his lecture notes. Not a lot of homework outside of studying for tests. One of my better online classes tbh
Took this class spring 2020 and Burch is a hilarious guy and his lectures are interesting. Although the essay criteria was not clear enough because I got a C even though I spent hours researching and shouldve gotten an A. Got As on all his tests though.
Harsh grader with the reflections and overwhelms you with information each day and is a little confusing to understand what you are supposed to do/read each week. Test questions are long and wordy.
Hard class but an amazing professor! Writing-heavy but tests are relatively easy. I highly recommend him as the knowledge I received was priceless.
Professor Burch is a very educated professor and the materials in his class were really interesting. I had a hard time with his class. Lots of reading, not very clear with his grading criteria, and lots of emails through the week. I struggled with his class, and with what his expectations are. I wish I could have gotten more out of his class.
Professor Burch is easily one of my favorite professors at Normandale. It was honestly hilarious watching him post about students not following the straightforward rules on the homework in our class. You do weekly readings, write about your opinions on them, and take a couple open-book exams. It's straight forward and you'll learn a lot if you try.
You will always learn a lot in Burch's classes. The lectures are very interesting and the group discussions are my favorite part of class. The grading is pretty straight forward, but I believe a lot of students get confused as the work for this class requires critical thinking instead of rote memorization. I always take Kurt's classes when I can.
This man does not actually teach. Each week he posted multiple pages full of links that we had to click on and read, that was it. This is NOT how anyone learns. I did not learn anything in this class.
Kurt is severely underrated on this website. His teaching style is unique and it rewards those who respond to it. Take this class seriously- ask questions, do the readings, and participate in the class discussions and you'll do great! He's one of the best professors I've had and would love another opportunity to learn from him again.
The class seemed daunting at first with tests every week, but it helped because you didn't have to cram for a big test and you could answer the incorrect ones 2 more times. He dropped a lot of assignments because people complained. The content didn't really line up with tests but class is very conversational so you still learn a lot.
This class was alright. We initally had to do reflections for each unit, but a lot of people complained that the criteria wasn't clear enough so he dropped them for the rest of the semester. All we had to do was read from textbook + D2L. The exams were nice because we had 3 attempts. Overall boring class (taking for deg. credit), but great teacher.
Will only do well on the tests (which are half of your grade) if you throughly read the textbook. Has no extra credit and is a tough grader.
Overall a great course and worth taking! The tests a relatively straightforward as long as you thoroughly read the textbook and take notes. There are self reflections every month/few months that are worth a larger portion of your grade. Our class didn't have discussions, he cancelled them at the beginning of the semester. I'd take again.
My class taken with professor Burch didn't seem to teach me a lot. Each week we were given around 3 readings, each reading was typically at least 16 pages long. It felt very excessive. His stinginess and ego got in the way of his teaching as he wasn't willing to learn more modern and effective ways to teach.
While the course held some interesting content, I think his style of teaching just isn't effective. It felt like he placed himself on a pedestal and had a very black and white way of thinking. Additionally, he wasn't willing to work with students on ways to improve or make the class more effective because he was so set in his old fashioned ways.
I'm just not a huge history/political science person so I found this class to be a bit boring. Professor Burch is a super cool dude, and his lectures are informative and not that long either. There's a bit of reading (textbooks, lecture notes, articles) but it's manageable. 3 tries for every exam which helped my grade by a ton.
I took this as a junior PSEO student and it has been my easiest class to date. He is really good at communication. With this class you just need to do your work and you pretty much have an A. I took this class online and it was so easy. Would for sure recommend him to others.
I wouldnt recommend. Take this class with anyone else if you can. Read his mind if you want to pass your quizes without struggling. Also, be ready for him to not allow you to resubmit assignments even when the problem was not on your end.
Kurt Burch was a pretty nice guy and is very chill. He allows you to do 3 attempts on each test, and as long as you read the material you shouldn't have a hard time in his class.
ConLaw with Professor Burch was super awesome. He will not hold your hand and you must have the self discipline as a college student to be successful. This was a heavy writing course and one where you need to think outside of the box. Make sure to plan ahead because excuses will rarely be allowed. He was a very inspiring prof!
I enjoyed this class. It was a politics class which often has a chance at becoming biased; however, Kurt Burch did a great job at showing the beliefs of both sides, and not picking personal sides on any issues. I would definitely recommend the class. Good material and good professor overall. 4/5
He was fine at first, then something changed the 3rd week and he was pretty.. not mean but not kind. He has no late work, the first missed assignment is replaced with the final assignment, but not the final and he purposely makes it this super long survey after a 100 question final. Missed 1 quiz(had surgery), 1 survey and got a C.
I thought he was a very understanding professor, though he became very concerned by the amount of emails he was getting from stressed students so he removed our weekly discussion posts for the rest of the semester. His tests arent too hard and you get 3 attempts on them all and their open note. SO I WOULD 100% recomend this class!
Terrible professor, starts the semester of by assigning an insane amount of work and articles to read. He makes the course extremely confusing and unorganized. After two weeks of this mess he up and quits on the class claiming its due to mental health reasons. He then only assigns tests for the rest of the course which are extremely difficult.
This class was insanely easy. At first, we had a couple of assignments per week, including reading an article and writing a couple paragraphs about it. Somehow, some students found this to be too much, so Professor Burch decided to cancel the rest of the assignments for the course, besides tests, which are monthly. This class couldn't be easier.
I took this as an online course; he's strict with deadlines, but a great professor. Beware because there is so much reading.
