Best teacher at Foothill. Not to be missed!
Always helpful. I agree, he's the best teacher on campus.
Makes an honors level class into a joke: 3 papers, 1000 words each, total work. His quizzes are a breeze. He will read your papers carefully and grade them fairly; however, his spelling/grammatical errors in his writing are a source for concern.

he was a really good teacher, and I personally felt that he provided everything I expected from an english honors class. he is very humorous (in fact - I believe he's a stand up comedian) and extremely intelligent.
One of the best teachers at foothill. His classes are very entertaining and they make life a little more meaningful.
Great teacher. Very interesting man. Knows what he is talking about. Very fair.Do not miss him if you have oportunity to take his class.
Great guy. Really seems to enjoy what he does.
Great proffesor. Gave insights of the meanings of plays. Job well done!
Great teacher!! Very interesting man. Knows what he is talking about. Very fair.Do not miss him if you have oportunity to take his class.
gravenhorst is a great teacher. he is really enthusiastic about teaching. he is extremely funny and his lectures were always very interesting. one negative is that he seemed to disregard the "less intelligent" students in the class.
Loved the class. He makes everything funny and explains things so that everyone can understand. Very helpful and an easy grader. If you come to class you'll pass no prob, study guides for tests help prepare.
flat out the BEST--they don't get any better. the man makes great connections and can bring out the essence of things. maybe one of the last great lecturers. get it while you can
Very smart, very clear, definately knows what he's talking about and makes it interesting to listen to his teachings!
LOVE THIS CLASS! Gravenhorst is really an inspiration. He is very fun and caring about everything he does. I feel like his passion and energy (i.e. in the morning) really makes anyone's day. He is awesome! TAKE HIM! Plus, he isn't bad too bad looking!
He is funny and so nice! He makes his class interesting and understandable.. definately a good class to take. Tests are easy- just read the book.
I didn't like this teacher for personal reasons, but he's very easy! You don't get any homework. You usually have an essay to do (1pg or so) every week or so, but they don't count for your final grade.Pass by passing the final, which is VERY EASY(essay).
Awesome teacher who is funny, a good guy, inelligent and makes a boring class fun....all you need is a book and study guide, easy
easy. kinda boring at times.
Hip Hop Thursdays are the best!
One of my first impressions was how cute he was (little boy cute). He really enjoys Shakespeare and knows what he is talking about. He incorporates videos into the class so we can see how the plays are acted out. Quite a nice class.
LOVED THIS CLASS...material didn't really interest me at first, but professor made it fun and exciting. Great teacher, great sense of humor! Tests are fair and not too hard as long as you take notes and show up to class.
GREAT teacher. He has so much energy about what he teaches. Really enjoyed all my classes with him! If you can take him, DO IT!!!
I loved it, his classes are like a story
He definately is entertaining but picky when it comes to essays! His book selection stunk but him reading from it is worth watching! Funny personality! Quizzes fairly easy, essays are different...
He's a tough grader when it comes to an essay. Funny personality, worth watching rather than reading that boring poetry book.
He is very funny and nice. He presents and makes boring materials funny! You will enjoy his class very much, but class itself is tough. Plus, I think he is a tough grader when it comes to essays.
This guy is great. Kurt is also really funny, making the classes very interesting. Even though I've done lots of theater, I've never really liked Shakespeare, although Kurt really inspired a strong interest in me. Great class, love to take more with him.
I loved this teacher! He was hilarious and made english 1b a breeze even though it was a summer class! If you have to take an eng class over the summer, I would definitely recommend him.
Funny guy, great teacher, loves what he teaches. Makes you interested in what you would normally consider boring.
He is soooo hot and incredibly intelligent and charismatic about what he teaches. I highly recommend taking his Humanities classes because he offers a ton of information in an interesting way. Plus, he's hot =)
If I was in junior high school, I would probably still be able to understand his lectures and get an A grade. He really knows how to explain and uses comedy to make the class more enjoyable.
His lectures are interesting, quizes are not very hard, and it's easy to get an A.. I'd recommend him.
Read the reviews, one of the best guys on the faculty. The class is a breeze if you show up 90% of the time because tests are primarily related to material discussed in lectures. Goes through a ton of information in an clear and entertaining way, plus, he gives out an extra credit assignment.
TAKE THIS CLASS! MR.G IS THE GREATEST TEACHER EVER! HE IS SO SMART AND FUNNY! I WANTED TO GO TO HIS CLASSES AND LOOKED FOREWARD TO HIS LECTURES! THIS CLASS IS SO REWARDING (AND ITS AN EASY 'A' TOO) i LOVE THIS GUY!
WOW! He is SUUUUUUCCCH a good teacher! i have never looked forward to going to school until i had kurt as my teacher! take this class and u will not regret it! just show up and take notes and u will get an A :)
I took and enjoyed Kurt's summer class. Even though many students didn’t like poetry before, most of them seemed involved in discussions and interested. However, he is not an easy grader with essays (4 essays+ 1 in class). They are short (500 words), 1 poetry quiz and easy reading quizzes. To get an A you need to work.
As long as you know the general story b4 studying it in class, you will do very well. He makes it extremely clear what will be on the tests. Tests are mostly identifying quotes, some short answer, and one essay that has been discussed thoroughly in class. He has great voices, too! Overall, insightful and entertaining.
THIS GUY IS AMAZING! His lectures are interesting and hes a very smart and funny guy. I looked forward to coming to his classes every day. TAKE THIS CLASS YOU WONT REGRET IT!
Great professor. I still remember things he taught me every time I write because he explains things so well. He played a major part in my love for reading and he is incredibly dynamic and interesting. I don't whether he is easy because I have a pretty strong writing background, but you will learn.
By far one of the best teachers at Foothill. He is so great...I would recommend taking ANY class he teaches.
Great teacher! One of the best around! His classes are the most entertaining at Foothill!
I saw him in a play on campus, and i took his class after that. I stil don't know what to think, really. It was alright; maybe it was just the class itslef but I wasn't thrilled or bored. His class was just in the middle. So-so.
this guy is the Sh!t. i felt bad when i was sick and couldn't even show up to class. man this guy is a genius though. really easy and his lecture is really great. for once i finally found a teacher that i can really understand and appreciate. i used his lessons and teach others about humanities. take him and you'll be thrilled.
Definitely one of the best teachers on campus! His lectures are interesting and fun. I have to say I didn’t miss one of his classes. His tests are easy if you go to class and pay attention. You will learn allot and gain greater knowledge then you imagined. Take this class!
This guy was a jerk. He was kind of a boring teacher and I had been expecting so much more because everyone told me how great he was. I sure didn't think so. I didn't really learn much in his class and I got an A. Go figure. Plus, all he did was look at my girlfriend during class, anyways. How unprofessional is that! I have no respect for him now.
This class focuses on poetry, plays & The Great Gatsby. There are 4 in class essays & 2 papers. He is specific about what he is looking for in each assignment & is a fairly tough grader, but will offer guidance if you ask. His lectures are entertaining & thought provoking. He performed a one man play for the class on the life of F.Scott Fitzgerald.
"Whoa man... the Renaissance. It's HERE! I can FEEL it!" His class was never boring, very entertaining, and super easy. You will never want to miss watching him lecture.
This class was a performance by itself. He wasn’t teaching, he was performing and I loved this class. Very easy and interesting. Strongly recommend this teacher.
He is hilarious!!! I love his class. I'm not done with the class yet, but can already say that it's an easy A. Great teacher! Also, ladies, try to CHECK OUT HIS SON!!! He is in another one of my classes, at Foothill, and he is HOT!
Awsome teacher. funny, insightful, engaging..the class is hard enough to learn something but not hard in a way that will ruin your day. I look forward to taking his other classes. He is cute. nice eyes. cute poutey mouth. doesn't trip over little things like being late.
I've always hated Eng comp but I'll never forget Kurt "GrabYourHorse" from 12 yrs ago. He graded tough, but was WILDLY entertaining with his unique brand of absurdist humor. Highlights were when he chose my poem as best of the day and (I'm not making this up) when he beat me in a 400m race by 30sec at Foothill's track. Kurt, the man, the legend.
Gravenhorst is a very enjoyable teacher, he illuminates the class with his quirky sense of humor. Attendance isn't manditory, but his lectures are usually very interesting. Requires three tests, but if you read and study somewhat it's pretty easy. Recomended.
After taking his class I changed my major to Humanities. **I am a non-traditional student & wanted to learn something. Don't miss class - sleep if you need to, but go! Only 3 exams & if you read &/or go to class you'll do fine. There's a few extra credit opps to help. **You of course have to have an interest in history &/or literature.
THIS CLASS WAS AWESOME! Gravenhorst enjoys what he is teaching and to say the least, there was never a dull moment in this class. His lectures kept me interested, and I would never miss A DAY of class. You are evaluated on three exams and there is an optional extra credit paper to help you with points. I would take another class with him!
Must go to class, if you miss class you miss a lot, either way, I really loved his choices of reading. Even the poems that were beyond me, the way he would read them, made them crystal clear. I would absolutely recommend him!
The class was easy: if you did the reading and attending regularly, getting an A was easy. However, I did not enjoy his style of teaching. I felt his readings of the poems were overdramatic, and we hardly analyzed any of the works, only learned a bit of murky background history, and then listened to him read the poems out loud.
Extreamly funny and easy to understand. He does not stray for the schedule and is a stickler for grammer! Loves to comment about students concenring their absenses. Overall, a great teacher if you go to class
Go to class, read the text esp the stuff he talks about, and its an easy A. Highly reccomended
He is a great teacher! Take the class!
He is a really smart teacher, but he grades tough on the essays. The reading summaries are nice because they are just free points. He is very clear in explaining grammar. Overall pretty good but tough.
Great teacher. I admit he made me tear up in a lecture about the epic of gilgamesh. His lectures are passionate, and thought provoking. a very good class.
A fun class even if you don't enjoy poetry and fiction. He is very passionate about his materials and gets you involved in his teaching. Attendance is mandatory. He makes fun of anybody if he has a chance to (just for fun, though). The grading is not so strict if you can meet his requirements. Strongly recommend!
Such a fun lecture. He can make mundane subjects humorous. I highly recommend his class!
Great Lecturer! Multiple choice exams are easy if you attend lecture and read the texts! Subjects rarely falter from study guide.
This professor makes his humanities class interesting. It's always a joy to attend his class.Lectures are easy to follow and tests not too hard-they come with the study guides.
He taught a Shakespeare class with pure lectures. It was definitely the sort of material we could have class discussions on.
Instructor is very lenient, clearly expresses what is to be expected on essays (he gives you a blueprint for the structure he wants). Minor grammatical errors or typos are barely influential in grading. He enjoys discussing his subject material, and has a terrific sense of humor. Makes poetry fun. Highly recommended.
Great and fun teacher. Exams are exactly what is on the study guide. Easy class, yet you learn a lot. Funny as well. Some quotes from the literature are on the exam, just read the literature before the exams and you'll be fine.
One of the best teachers I've had. (this includes many other teachers at Foothill, as well as UC Berkley). HIGHLY recommend taking him. I took 3 classes with him, all were great.
Very nice guy, good on poetry and general humanities but rather lacking on Shakespeare. Has limited understanding of the texts and the man himself. If someone who dismisses all the characters in Midsummer (and I mean all)but for the lovers sounds good as a Shakespeare teacher, take this class. If you want to actually study Shakespeare, don't.
Mr. Gravenhorst is a very nice funny and cute teacher. Shakespear, when taught by him is easy and clear to understand. He is also an awsome actor. Amaizing teacher!!
I wouldn't say that he's physically hot, he's just smart and funny. Oh, btw, he IS married. But that's beside the point, HE IS MY ABSOLUTE FAVE TEACHER! He's so animated and knows how to give a lecture. Just go to the first day and you'll see how awesome he is.
This class was awesome. Kurt was very clear when he explained the subjects and the topics were very interesting. To pass this class the most important thing to do is to show up. The exams are based mainly off the lectures so be there!
Very good teacher. I enjoy coming to class every lecture. He reminds me of Owen Wilson. Super cool guy.
Class is extremely easy if you come to class and pay attention. Paying attention is easy because topics are interesting and discussions lively. Easy A, even without the amazing extra credit opportunities.
He used to teach Shakespeare right before another class I had. When I realized he was my new instructor, I thought "oh no". Actually he's the highest quality prof. I've ever had so far.. Very passionate, funny and knowledgeable. He still loves teaching. You really feel you're getting a college course with him. He's a kind, fun and professional.
Very good teacher. Easy class. Tells you what you need to know for the exams. Do the extra credit +10!
He made Humanities an exciting topic for all who chose to attend the class. It's simple, straightforward, and easy to understand because of him. Awesome teacher.
Extremely helpful, easy class if you show up. Fun wish there were more teachers like this.
Very funny, and the first teacher I've had that actually TEACHES English. Arrange your whole schedule to make sure you get Mr. G, :)
I enjoyed his class very much! Lectures are informative and fun. It's the first time I actually like an English class!
This teacher is impossible to get a good grade if he doesn't like you. I came into the class with a private school education and top notch writing skills (as shown by 650+ SAT and current A in English 1B class). I got a B- even after doing every assignment on time and coming to every class ready to learn. Very biased. Do NOT take.
DO NOT TAKE HIM he is very disorganized and grades really hard on essays. At first I thought he would be laid back and I took him based on his good ratings on here. BUT THEY WERE VERY COMPLETELY FALSE. I wish i had dropped him before the W deadline dont waste your time with this guy. Sign up for someone where you have a chance getting a good grade
he is nice teacher, but his class is not easy at all. i took his 7am class because he has pretty good rate here. however it's not true at all.
Course consists of 3 tests & 1 extra credit paper. No homework. Attendance is not mandatory & he does not take roll; however, it will difficult to pass if you do not attend regulary. Lectures are interesting & the professor knows what he's talking about. Overall course is extremely easy. Classes can get full up to 170+ students in a quarter.
Extremely good lecturer, however, no class interaction. Which isn't a big deal but I think that class interaction helps students retain knowledge. Listen, take notes, read and you'll pass with an A. His tests are very straight forward, no tricky questions.
Really amusing guy and very straightforward. Attendance and textbooks aren't mandatory, but his tests are on his lectures, so take careful notes. No homework or bull and the material is interesting. I would recommend this class.
I loved this class! Gravenhorst is such a theatrical instructor. He makes humanities very interesting although the whole class is a lecture. His class is determined by 3 tests and it is very straightforward. Make sure you listen to everything he says in class and take good notes for the test.
Professor Gravenhorst is a pretty good instructor, and all of his tests were very straightforward. His study guides were very clear, and the reading wasn't heavy. I did an extra credit paper on a play he was in that I saw, and he is a good actor too!
Great teacher and awesome lecture. Totally cool and understanding teacher. Plus give you extra credit.
I really wanted to like him BUT his grading is ridiculous. Even if you follow his rubric and assignments to a "T" you will get a C paper UNLESS you are able to stop thinking and put forth no more effort than it takes to regurgitate what he has said. That's right, don't think for yourself and just re-write what he says - otherwise you will be wrong.
Kurt's Shakespeare class was great! Yeah, not a class that will help you transfer, but a great introduction to the material!
Shocked when I received a C on my first paper, it was MY fault. I had good points but didn't present them coherently. Run-on sentences, etc. He reads EVERY single page--loves red ink! I still HIGHLY recommend him. Despite that one C, I still ended up with an A-. Make sure you do the reading as it's accompanied by quizzes. Thanks.
He was unclear and unorganized. his lectures were interesting, lots of reading and exams are not relevant to his lecture.
His class was somewhat interesting, but his lectures are pretty long and sometimes a little boring. No homework but the format of his tests are always the same: all multiple choice on chapter sectionsreading questions, the literature for adventures book, and vocabulary words. So just make sure you read and you'll pass!
Really into himself. Easy A if you pretend he knows what he's talking about. Don't over any counter-perspectives or draw his attention and you'll be fine. Tends to be an ass but thankfully the quarter system is so short.
I took his English class. He is entertaining but its impossible to get an A in the class unless you already know how to write well. The class does not allow for much improvement.
