Great teacher with a wonderful sense of humor. Very intresting topics for classes. Take anything he teaches.
Mr. H rocks! How many teachers do you come across in college that swear that they'll chase you outta class like a mad hen before class has even begun for the semester? His methods are probably unconventional but they'r awesome... Props to ya White man
Hemmer is the man! I've loved his lectures. He's fun, educated, good looking in his own carrot top way :) and most of all keeps his students on their toes! Keep on teaching, Mr H, you're awesome!!!
His grading is very biased. His class is... interesting. It is not my 'cup of tea'.

he was really weird but hillarious!
I'm learning about the history of music in an english 102 class...'nuff said! He's awesome.
TAKE THIS TEACHER! HEMMER IS THE COOL GUY ON CAMPUS-PROBABLY COOLER THAN YOU.
Best teacher for English 102! He makes you learn and work your ass off! I had him 2 yrs ago and wish he had other classes I needed. Best guy ever!

Just awesome.
He is a tough grader but is more than willing to help. I loved this man....very entertaining.
He was very good! You actully get to learn something new in English class. He makes it fun, its not your typical writing and reading class. You have to use your mind for this one, but its worth it in the end
The first class i took of hemmer's was ENG 101 --EXISTENTIAL PHILOSPHY. the second class was ENG102 -- ROCK AND ROLL. and now the third is LIT -- ALL ABOUT JAMES DEAN. need i say more?
cool dude
He's a tough grader but he does teach interesting material
1st impression: intimidating b/c he wasn't smiling & he was wearing a suit...but he alllllways wears a suit & it's sexy on him...speaking of which i adore the way he does his hair!: perfect messy spiky. .........oh---he's a good teacher too, haha
Best Class I've ever taken in college so far!
First impression (suit) is misleading. Dude is way cool and knows his stuff. You'll enjoy his classes. Would've liked to have taken one or two more, but I need to leave Harper ASAP.
Tough grader, had sort of an attitude too. You don't need that.
i had him for eng.101 and after that i purposefully looked for classes that he was teaching cause he kicked so much ass. hes funny, intelligent, and creative. makes you exercise your brain on a daily basis. i truly can not remember any of the teachers i had at harper short of mr. hemmer. he rocks. he's hot, and he rocks. :)
Hemmer :) Ahh... the best guy! Very tough on you the first day you're there, he straight up tells you if you're looking for an easy ride, get out of my class :) I loved the way he had helped me through this though class and the research paper! Awesome teacher, all the lectures were thought through and interesting!
This guy is ****in amazing... Hope to see you in his ENG 102 class all u myspacers :) Hes a rocker ;)
Awesome teacher. Funny. Like cool music. Knows what he's talking about and is able to convey ideas to students in a clear manner. What else d'ya want from a teacher? I definitely recommend some of his classes.
Cool teacher. Down to Earth, and has a explaination for everything. Sponataneous at moments too. He is always looking to break the ice with everyone, and to have everybody intereact, which is great. I hope I have him for future English classes.
Kurt Rocks! Had him in my Rock'N'Roll class. How appropriate... He is smart, funny, and swears a lot. Wiilling to help you, if you show that you want to exceed and learn. He is very straight foreward. If you get on his good side at the beggining, you are good for the rest of the semester. Helps if you are a hot girl ;)
He had to take over the class because our previous professor had gotten sick. He gave us a ton of extra credit and was very clear and helpful. Would definitely recomend him if you want to take a fun class.
Great energy from the teacher, but the papers were just too much! I didn't like the peer editing only because I wasn't a fan of my fellow class mates opinions. I would have prefered my own editing. Quizzes were basic and straight from the books. Cool professor, but didn't like any of the books that were assigned.
Mr. Hemmer is a great English teacher. He is very well organized and teaches the material very passionatly. Participation and attendance are all added into your final grade, as well as a few papers and quizes to test knowedge on the books we read. Overall great english teacher. Enjoyed it, and learned a lot from it.
He's kinda of imtimidating can come off like a real jerk in the beginning. But, he is a great teacher and you will learn a lot in his class. There's a lot of reading but if you do it you will ace the class. Very fair grader. Plus, he is pretty entertaining and relates the material to our times.
i had him for english 101 (existential philosophy), english 102 (rock and roll), and a literature and film class (james dean), and they were the greatest classes i've ever taken. he changed my life for sure. if you can, go to paris w/ his english class, it's the one thing i regret not doing!
1. Intelligent 2. No final, Just a 9 page paper 3. Understanding 4. Funny 5. Interesting lectures 6. Quizzes are EASY 7. Reading your material is a MUST 8. Attendance required 9. Straightforward teacher 10. Visual lectures most of the time 11. Incorporates music into lectures 12. No homework Overall an impressive teacher, a good pick!
He is very smart and knows he smart but is not cocky about it. He is very interested in what he teaches. If you are not into the class at least he is nice to look at.
He is a tough grader. Fun class (rock and roll english). And fake's having an English accent sometimes and that can be distracting. Argued with students a few times. And his vampire point hair can be a distraction as well. Good luck, I shoulda had an A though.
I loved the first day of class but after that... i'm not too sure about his class anymore. He scared me. his mug shot looking picture scares me, his hair style scares me. For a second, i thought he was a devil worshipper. But he's really funny. He's a hard professor.
I took him for Eng 102 "The Beat Generation" The pluses are as follows: no homework, easy quizzes if you read the material. MINUSES: 3 four-page papers worth 10-20% of final grade, 8 page paper worth 20%, he made us write a 4 page and 8 page paper at the same time because he cut the semester short a week because he was going on vacation!
He's not as intimidating as he first appears. Not too tough a grader, but he is incredibly picky about formatting. Attendance is mandatory, as is promptness. No final, but expect to write a 4-page paper every 1-2 weeks and a 9-page paper at the end. He also requires peer editing of first drafts.
HESUCH A NICE GUY BUT THE BOOKS HE ASSIGNED FOR US ARE USELESS AND SO BOEING THAT MAKE U CRY, NOT BECAUSE THE READING IS SAD, JUST BECAUSE IT IS SO BORING
Funny guy, ENG 101 is about existentialism. The format was read a book, take a quiz, write a four page essay and repeat four times. Hemmer really likes rock music and plays a music video everyday before class that relates to the topic. I enjoyed his class. I thought it was easy and a bit fun, more of philosophy then English though.
sweet class, hes offering ENG 102 & comp;poetry 105 - The Beatles next fall
Kurt makes the class fun and interesting. As long as you show up to class and read the text the class is a breeze!
This class was challenging and although I earned an "A" I don't think there were very many in He our summer class. The instructor was very helpful for one-on-one guidance for the compare/contrast essays, which make up almost the entire course grade. I suggest taking this class, despite the grade you end up with.
I took his English 101 class, knowing it'd be hard, but worth the experience. Existentialism! VERY hard reading, but he explains the concepts well & inspires interesting dialogue in class. I loved his appreciation of rock music, his swearing, & amusing personal stories. Plus, he's HOTTT! Made for a very enjoyable and educational first class back!
I definitely recommend taking this class. Half the semester is spent watching movies and you have to write a compare/contrast essay on each one and its book. Very fun and funny professor. Does not argue with his students like the review below says. Not a tough grader on essays as long as you don't slack off on them. Highly recommend.
Kurt is a great instructor. Probably one of Harper's best. You will need to do the work to earn your grade. LIT class was Gangsters and Outlaws, very interesting. Learned a lot from his 101 also.
Mr. Hemmer is an amazing teacher! He keeps everything fun, interesting, and relates it today. He is extremely passionate about what he is teaching, and does an incredible job keeping the class interested. NO FINAL! A few 4 page essays: EASY! Come to class, do your work, try on your essays, and you will be happy with your grade!Existentialism-awesom
He was not a good teacher. He only cares about what students have to say when they are agreeing with you. once told a girl that her opinion was wrong and called her out in front of the class for it. tough grader, wastes most of class with pointless youtube videos, worst class i have taken at Harper yet. would not recommend this teacher to anyone.
Great professor, very entertaining. I took his "Beat Generation" section. It was almost more of a history class than an English class. I actually enjoyed reading the assigned books. He is a tough grader but it's for your benefit. My essay writing skills have improved quite a bit.
a teacher thats truly interested in helping you develope as writer. TAKE HIS BEATLES CLASS! its better than a regular eng102. fun group pojects, papers (4pg) and extra credit. my love for writing, reading, and music has grown emensly since having him as my teacher. do the work come to class and ur gaurenteed a B. but if u truly try u shud get an A
Wonderful teacher. Smart, funny, and always interesting. Sometimes the books he chooses aren't the best, but he'll redeem them by being a great teacher. I always looked forward to my Wednesday class! I wish i could take him again
Super boring class, especially a 2 hour and 40 minute one. He would drag the class until the very last minute and sometimes even would keep us 15-20 minutes after. The papers got repetitive over the semester because it was the same format just different topics.
He's a great teacher, if you get on his good side. He's very funny, smart, and helpful. I wish i could re-take the class. Though the papers can be hard, just go to the writing center, they will be a huge help. Watch the films, read the books, listen to him, you'll get a good grade
Great sense of humor, knowledgable, very helpful. we used the books for everything and wrote a couple of papers during the semester but they were not back-breaking. Good professor, i recommend him!
I can honestly say that the Beatles class would be a great class with out him. He made the class super boring and he is a smart ... Asks for participation but then knocks the students, making no one want to talk to him. One of the worst teachers I have had at Harper. Very crabby & thinks he is all that! If you can avoid taking him do so.
Very fun and passionate teacher. He loves what he does and he grades papers fairly. I do recommend using the writing lab to check your grammar mistakes as he is a stickler for that.
Even though most of the material was very dated and dry, he made it very interesting and insightful.
He is a really good instructor. He is very smart. He is sarcastic at times, but it made us all laugh. He was strict on being late...if your not there by the time he takes attendence then even if you show up he wont count it. So show up and on time! He has his rules, but otherwise i enjoyed the class. I would take him again!!!
this guy is awesome. no textbooks, just 4 novels that you will have to do a report on and quizzes. Very intelligent guy.
Mr Hemmer is a very intelligent professor. I took his class during the spring'14 semester & it was great. He required 4 novels that we had write papers about. He gave out assignment sheets and went over details before every paper or quiz were due. Really great experience. If you show up to class, turn in your papers on time & do quizzes: You'll pass
Awesome professor. Professor Hemmer is really passionate about his work and very knowledgeable. His class truly is inspirational.
Mr. Hemmer is the best English professor I ever took. The class is very interesting and the topics are great. We talked about the Beat Generation and it really opened my eyes. He really knows what he is teaching and his personality is bad ass. The class is fairly easy if you do your sh*t. Don't expect a good grade if you're lazy.
Kurt Hemmer was my 2nd favorite professor for this semester only because my top teacher was just phenomenal. You are definitely going to have to read, quizzes and papers on books you read. Attendance does count, each class is 3.23 points so I got a 72% in attendance bc I missed class often. Very interesting topic to learn about. Hemmer was grt
I hated this class. Long, boring, and hard! He is a tough grader. I am a decent writer and this class made me feel like I had never had a lesson in English before. Although he is hard, you learn a lot. He is very open about his political affiliation and uses politics to get a rise out of students. Would not take again.
Professor Kurt Hemmer is a great and very clear teacher. He's going to tell you what are the expectations and he will follow them (which is not always the case) I would recommend this class to everyone. Even if you're not interested in the subject of that class - he's going to make it interesting!!
Professor Hemmer a great English instructor. Show up to class, put effort into your work, and you'll pass. He's somewhat of a tough grader, but gives great feedback on your essay and assignments that will help you become a writer. Overall, I enjoyed his class (can be long and boring at times), but the topics he teaches are unique and interesting.
Professor Hemmer is an interesting, real, straight shooter, no frills type of professor. Overall he is a good professor. He makes you think outside of the box and he is actually interested in your opinion. He is funny, sticks to the syllabus, doesn't give homework aside from the required reading.
This class is very straight forward. We watch the movie in class you read the book and take a quiz on the book and write a paper. Make sure you get a good grade on your first paper as it will set you up for the rest of the semester the papers are weighed more then anything. Over all great class. Participation is key dont skip class you loose points
Professor Hemmer is quite an interesting instructor. I'll be honest, he kinda gave off a scary vibe at first but over time you learn he's quite chill and funny. He's very clear about what needs to be done in regards to the assigned readings and essays. One must really get right to the readings and be willing to contribute during lectures.
Doesn't exactly teach. He will teach you about the subject for a day or so, & then the rest is all in the reading. Difficult essays if English isn't your major. Really push yourself to read the books or you're not passing. The "theme" of the class is kind of boring. He can be kind of arrogant. Just keep up with the readings & you'll pass at least.
Awesome professor! I hate reading and although we had a lot of it(but I mean what else do you expect in an english class?) he helped me understand the material. Overall he's a great professor, just follow the readings and participate in class.
He's a tough grader. I suck at writing and I still went to the writing center and still got c's. He's very clear on his assignment and provides detail info on the papers. You watch movies, quizzes are based off the book so you need to read. I went to extra credit stuff and that's how I got a good grade.
Fantastic professor!
Fantastic professor. He is well qualified, being published in many journals. You know exactly what he wants on each assignment since he goes over it in class. You can tell he cares about his students and loves the subject he teaches.
Funny, respected, passionate, willing to help, & flexible. Extra credit, 4 quizzes, 4 essays (1 in-class and 1 min. 8-pg research paper at the end), no final exam. Attendance is graded. Books are dry, but the Beat Generation is very interesting and revolutionary. Try not to buy them, find it online. Seems intimidating but Hemmer's a great professor
Student participation. I mean, he wants to talk and preach but then he also wants students to participate. If you have a class where the prof has a strong character, the students won't talk. If you have a prof who has a lot of questions for the students, students will fire back. Either a dialogue class or a presentation. He's all talk.
hemmers amazing. His lectures spawn from the 1940s through the 70s and they are so interesting! He basically tells you everything that is going to be on his tests so you don't really need to read the books but you still should to do well on the papers. He's super funny and likes to play music in class/ watch documentaries. work load is manageable
He makes it clear what he wants in his papers and his quizzes aren't hard if you go to all the classes. He's pretty funny and the class covers some interesting topics. Recommend taking any class with him if you get the chance.
Professor Hemmer is one of the better english professor's I've ever had. All the papers are expositories and are very straight forward with clearly defined criteria for what he is looking for. Show up to class because everything that is on each quiz will be discussed. Very passionate about his class and keeps it interesting. Read and you'll be fine
Hemmer is the best professor I have ever had. He makes class extremely interesting and engaging with his lectures. He's extremely passionate about what he teaches. He is very clear on what he wants in the papers and as long as you go to class you will pass the papers and the quizzes. Overall just a very cool guy
We studying political books, and Hemmer constantly expressed your opinion against current president thereby influencing on students. He expressed his not good attitude toward some countries. He made jokes on students, some of those were unkind. He underestimated grades without explanation because he thought some countries affect on election Trump.
He's an interesting teacher. Scared me at first but ended up really liking him! Read the books, come to class, write what he wants & you'll get an A. Quizzes are easy bc he goes over what you need to know. Watched movies & listened to music. Made us read some books out loud.4 quizzes & 4 papers - 1 in class, & extra credit. No final. Great teacher!
I was scared at first but ended up enjoying the materials and learned a lot from him. It was very hard to get an A- though because we had to read 3 books and write 4 essays within 8 weeks and Im just a terrible writer But hes very clear on what he wants in the papers. As long as you really make the effort, he will give you the chance to succeed.
Professor Kurt Hemmer is a great teacher, you will learn a lot from his class. Attendance is mandatory and you need to read the books (3) in order to complete essays, one quiz and a research paper. I got an A in the class but it was a hard A. Make sure if you take him you know you will learn but you will also work for it. Will take him again :)
Find the books online or take pics at Barnes. His class has the theme of the Beat Generation so the class focuses on influential writers/poets from the 50's. Cool, funny guy but class can get boring. 4 quizzes, 3 essays, & one 8 pg research paper, no final. EZ class if you're a good writer. Beat Gen is super interesting/radical, loved the readings!
Really cool prof & class! Seems intimidating, but EZ to talk to. Attendance is mandatory, but class is super chill-usually reading poems, watching movies/listening to Beatnik songs. Takes points off for leaving class early w/o prior knowledge. Lots of extra cred when he cancels class for on-campus guest speakers during his class time! Easy A
I didn't like Kurt in the beginning but in end he was a cool. Half the time you spend in the class will be boring lectures and videos to watch, but the other half is when he actually makes you think about morals and the characters you read about in and outside of class with the tons of humor he brings in. Just show that you care, youll get a B.
Attendance is mandatory, books need to be brought to class or you lose points. He hands out papers that will help you with your essays. Some days are nice and easy, watching a film based on novels you will have to write your essay on BUT don't slack off because "it's just a movie." You're going to need it for your essay to compare it with the book!
He's a hard professor. You have to read 4 books, and write four essays and one is in-class. Our class's theme is counterculture, and is very difficult for me. Take him only you like reading and writing, he is a good professor if you like those.
Professor Hemmers lectures are great and he is hilarious. You read 4 books in total and he spreads out the readings really well. You also watch movies on the books before you take a quiz which help you understand a lot more. He does a great job at explaining the content so the students understand. He is the best English professor Ive ever had!
Professor Hemmer was really funny, he was a strange guy but his class was very chill and I learned a ton about the American mob, which I really enjoyed. The only con is that his grading criteria is very strict, he wants you to write the way he would write and edits word choice to his preferences, so I got straight Bs on all of my essays.
Honestly a super standard English class. He picks a topic, we read books and watch movies on that topic. It did feel like class time could've been used in a more interesting way. The reading is on the heavy side too. So if you like poetry, the hippie movement, or the 60s/70s in general, take his class. If not, take another ENG101.
Guys if u good and love history and other things related to past, u can join his class ENG101. He chose the 1960s for our class and I am currently (summer 2019) in his class. The first was the boring day ever. This teacher was unorganized, forgets his words, gives a lot of homework. If u are an introvert like me I wouldn't suggest u this teacher
The class was about history which I don't mind and my complain mis not about the subject of his choice to teach but himself. He didn't make an effort to connect to the students so far. Constantly inferring his political views as liberal and every time he gets a chance diminish the conservatives. His strong bias made me withdraw from his class.
All our classes were about 60s in the USA. It was so interesting to observe how professor enjoyed this theme. He was so inspirational! He has very clear grading criteria, so it isnt hard to get an A. During this classes I have learned what I had to and also had a lot of fun.
At first, I was scared of him but you have to get on his good side. I think he teaches just fine, he goes a little fast so that's hard to keep up with. A lot of essays though. One thing I didn't enjoy as much is how he can pick on you. Overall not bad just not my style of teaching.
Took his class during the summer semester and it was based on the 1960's. It was always clear what he expected from everyone. Only down side was the amount of books we had to get for this class, but it is an English course. Turn assignments in on time and you'll be fine.
Really chill teacher. I turned in my final ten-page paper six days after it was due and he still accepted it. Awesome teacher, a lot of reading. Integrated Beat Generation theme into the class. If you miss something he will let you take it another day, just talk to him. Takes attendance but if you do everything else you will pass. Great teacher
Kurt Hemmer is a really chill and funny dude. He seems super strict at first but once you talk to him, you will see he is actually nice and wants you to succeed. Attendance is taken every class, and then added up at the end of the year. The class was lowkey painful to go to but sometimes it ended up being really funny.
Hemmer is awesome. Super interesting books, with real experiences he has had about the authors too. I intend to keep reading more of the Beat writers books. Always got papers returned with comments on them. You need to have good attendance. I think this has been the best class I have ever taken at Harper so far. You should definitely take Hemmer.
Professor Hemmer was a great teacher, he was super interesting and smart. The reason I struggled with his class was that we had a heavy load of reading and difficult topics for our papers. He grades papers pretty tough and expected a lot from us when it came to understanding pretty confusing content.
This class is made up of about 4-5 essays and a few little poetry assignments. Easy and simple class to take if you need humanities/fine arts. It was 8 weeks long bc it was a summer course but it was extremely manageable. Take him only if you are pretty strong in English bc he gives lots of essay feedback
Professor Hemmer was probably was one of the easiest, most chill classes I've taken at Harper. All we did was go to class watch some videos that matched his lectures and do short easy papers on poets that we got to choose from. At the end of the semester we had a book to read to take the final on but I didn't read it and still passed. Great guy.
This guy is absolutely hilarious! I thoroughly enjoyed his lectures (he gives extra credit for showing up & engaging in conversations), even though they were long they were interesting to listen to! This class only has a couple major essays and as long as you watch the film and read the book you should be fine!
He makes you read a ton of books that are hard to find. You literally have to go to the end of the earth to find those books. He then calls people out for missing assignments in front of 50 people. Take a more logical, practical professor that doesn't make you get odd books and do odd things, and his a more standard textbook curriculum.
KURT IS THE BEST!!!!! Hands down coolest professor I have ever had at Harper. I took Lit112 this semester just to have him again. He is really passionate about music and literature and makes the curriculum insanely fun and easy to keep up with. Do yourself the biggest favor and take his class.
I took Hemmer's english 101 course over the summer. It was eight weeks long, and because of that everything moved a lot quicker so be sure to stay on top of readings. Professor Hemmer is very caring and understanding, when I was out with covid he offered me extensions and made himself very easy to talk to or go to with concerns. Would take again!
Hammer is an interesting but fascinating person. His class is oretty easy as long as you do your work
Very interesting course! Interesting videos and books offered by teacher , as well as such meaningful and compleate lectures that you can easily write 4 essays! I loved this course and would take the next classes with this teacher! Highly recommended!
Good professor. It's only been a month into the semester and I do like him. I know many people that don't, but that is only because they are lazy. Yes, he is somewhat strict, but you have to remember that this is college, you can't slack off. The only thing I dislike is that he takes attendance and is not lenient about it.
quizzes, pretty easy. he has a great personality and a really chill prof, my second time taking him and i'd do it again!
I really liked this class. four quizzes, four short papers, no final. he gives good feedback that's easy to follow so you know what to work on for next time. some of the content you study can get pretty heavy so just be mindful of that. you watch a few movies which is pretty great, and if they're to much for you he'll let you sit out.
Best teacher I've encountered so far. Lectures were super interesting, it's clear that he knows his stuff and enjoys teaching. He can look intimidating at first but actually very caring and accessible outside of the class. I definitely recommend taking him, especially if you enjoy literature and movies, you won't regret it!!
His quizzes were not academic, and he wrote incorrect information about MLA on his board. I think he also has AI paranoia.
AWESOME TEACHER- I'm currently taking his class (getting close to the end) I can say that he may seem serious but that's his rest face. Really nice guy, interesting conversations. Our unit was Tragedy In the 90's (talking about hip hop artists). Easyy quizzes, Few essays, but you may fail if you don't do the work! COMP is easy with him teaching it
Professor Hammer can seem intimidating at first, but he's actually pretty chill and wants you to succeed. Lectures are engaging, and using Unstuck AI for study prep is a lifesaver. Just make sure to do the work and engage in class.
I dont even know where to start. I LOVE this prof! Not only is he hilarious, but genuinely interested in what he teaches. Some books were a bore to read, but you learn a lot about them and the topics through his lectures. His grading is very straightforward and as long as you prepare for essays or quizzes, your grade will be good.
Very nice guy who cares about his students success, the material is very interesting and we spend half of each class watching a documentary or a movie. He is very easy to access outside of class and is fast to respond to emails as well as open to meet up very often.
Very sigma. Easy class. Arguably too easy and doesnt challenge you enough. But hey, easy A
Lit & Film was great with him. Our classroom was in a theater, and we watched movies every class that aligned with the books we read. We read four books total, and watched five movies. We had to write four essays, one for each book. Participate in class discussions! I respect him as a professor. Each book had a quiz we had to complete with it.
Love love love prof. Hemmer and the structure of his class. There are four papers and the class kinda moves fast but you'll have time for everything I promise. He gives you a template of how to structure the essays which really helps. take his class!!!!!!!
Professor Hemmer is a really cool guy who clearly loves teaching this class. The class was structured around 4 papers and was super easy to follow. Super easy to get an A if you follow the instructions and come to class (since attendance is counted). This was a really fun class and comparing the books to the films was cool, definitely recommend!
He's a great professor. Our semester was themed on "Tragedy In The 90's." We read four books, and he gives an open-note quiz and an essay for each book. Be prepared to read or at least listen to the class discussion for potential book quotes to use. Attendance and participation (reading out parts from the book) are for grades.
