It's not that he doesn't know how to do math, it's that he has a difficult time teaching it to others; especially those who have a natural inability for math (like myself.) He isn't clear and uses a lot of analogies, which I feel, makes it more difficult.
I would not take him again or suggest you to take him if Math is not your strong point. His analogies are crazy and will lose you. However, he does try, he's fair, and he helps. I am barely passing with a C. It's the tests that will trip you. :-/
He has not mastered the skill of being able to teach. He will make something easy to somthing hard. What I did was took notes and taught myself by looking at the examples in the book.If you listen to his anologies they may hurt your grade.
He doesn't know how to teach and his examples and analogies suck. If your good at math, then it's easy, just don't listen to him but if you aren't good at math then take someone else because he'll confuse you.
a preschooler would have done a better job teaching this course. NEVER TAKE HIM EVER! his pink shirts and sandles with socks are amusing and fun to laugh at, but the way he teaches absolutly sucks.
Ok...he was not a very good teacher AT ALL. I would not reccomend taking him. He is a nice guy though. I was doing terrible and I would cry to him after class. I brought him cookies at the final....maybe thats the only reason I passed with a C..
this dude sucks major! NEVER Ever take him. his class is really hard and he makes math soooo boring! He also needs to become a better teacher before his former and current students reccommend everyone not to take his courses ever!
He may be a geek with his sox and sandels, but he does know his math.
A very nice guy. He teaches very well. If a student doesn't get something he will explain the problem untill everyone gets it. He doesn't make you do your homework, but it is a good idea to do it and if you do, you will not have any problems on the test
i think he is a great teacher. He explains things until everyone understands. The tests are fair if you do your homework. I plan on taking him again for college algebra next semester.
I had College Math with him and it was probably one of the worst math courses I have ever taken at Valencia. He doesn't do a very good job of explaining anything and when he does try to explain a question or a problem, he just confuses you even more.
I was in his class for one day and dropped it. I talked to him after class asking for help and he was not professional at all. If you cant break down math to teach to students then don't TEACH!!!!! He was all around the worst teacher I've ever had at VCC.
Very easy. Easy tests, easy homework. Easily got A.
the worst teacher ever! he is not helpful at all and when you ask a question he goes on to explain something else. don't take him for any self based classes. the whole class was upset with how he graded our tests, we went to the dean. i got a B but barely
Great self-paced teacher. He clearly explained any difficult concepts to me in a way that I could understand. I didn't have a problem with him grading my tests, if fact he graded my tests in front of me so I could ask questions on what I got wrong.
I'm baffled by some of these ratings! i think this guy is a fine professor. He teaches concepts instead of just straight memorizing. it forces you to think more on the college level. It was this depth that helped me to finally understand math.
I thought he was a good professor. Very fair tests and reasonable HW assignments. He taught well, and was funny too.
great great great!!!
He was nice, he was willing to explain everything. However, he tried to explain some things so they would be simple but they ended up being more confusing. He was eager for everyone to grasp the concepts and even more eager about math in general!
I've visited him a couple of times in his office for help and he did not seem to want to spare the time. Like he was too busy for me each time. He's not one of the best out there in my experiences, especially when it comes to explaining the material. I do not recommend him for college algebra.
He makes the class so simple that anyone can pass it. He goes through lessons very slow and always asks if there are any questions. Not hard on due dates or absences although he tells you he is on the first day. For the final, he told us what kind of problem each single one was (36 multiple choice)
Nice man and he knows his stuff, but he has a fetish with word problems and concentrates on them too much. Do the h/w n u pass his test. All open book or take home, but u still need to study. If u want formulas and no open ended answers, do not take him.
if you don't know anything about math then take him. he introduces material as if we were in first grade just learning it. the same material that we learned in 8th grade. loves word problems all too much. but if you do the hw and go to class, you can pass.
Uses classes to experiment with different teaching methods, Open book tests but still hard. Multiple choice final, overall i would recommend him only if you like math.
Good teacher.
Mr. Overhiser is very easy to talk to and get along with. I took his self-paced Trig class, and he knew the subject matter very well, while hosting 4 other self-paced subjects at the same time. This guy's math knowledge is amazing. If you need math, I'd definitely recommend him.
I took him for college algebra self paced. He was so patient with me even though I failed a couple of tests. He made me feel like I could do it and I did. I passed the class with a lot of hard work and encouragement from him.
this guy is a genuine nice guy, but not good at gettin the point across. all of his tests are soooo hard. by the middle of the semster half the class was talkin about what teacher we were gonna take when we have to re-take this class, and i have to repeat it and I'm good at math. steer clear of him
this teacher is very absent minded and is in the clouds a lot of the time, he seemed to convey the image that he cared but his exeriments on us students were strange. He was way too hard for a lower level class. If your not a math brainiac and not obsessed with word problems steer clear
Easiest math class. This college algebra class was easier than my high school pre-calc class. He goes at the students pace, so everyone will understand everything, he did help the slower bunch who had to refresh. You use your book for tests in class, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for college algebra.
Overhiser was a great teacher. I was able to understand the deep meaning behind calculus. I didn't get that when I took it in high school. I actually UNDERSTAND what calculus is all about and see the big picture now. I wish I could take more math classes with him.
Highly recomended, at least for Calculus. He was caring, patient, and compassionate. He really took my personal issues into consideration. I just wish he were teaching Calculus 2 in the near future. His test were a little hard but you get used to the format after the first one. You have to actively ask questions in class to really get it.
Awesome teacher!!! You really learn on a deep level when you take his class. Not the easiest of professors but it is clearly evident that he loves what he does and cares for his students.
Prof. Overhiser is so bubbly about calculus that it's hard not to enjoy it. He provides solutions to all homeworks, which he doesn't collect, and his tests, for which he provides a very in depth study guide, are taken directly from the homeworks.
Good guy, he's very passionate about math. Would like a little more detail on the process for solving particular problems.
great class. prof. overhiser rocks! he has his own website with lots of stuff on it to help the students out.
Prof. Overhiser has a wonderful teaching style. He is easily understandable and extremly helpful. He will do anything in his power to help you undertand the math both in and out of class. If you want a great instructor Prof. Overhiser is one of the best.
man cannot teach...he just proves stuff on the board and expects everyone to know the most complicated stuff on the test...does not go over hw...take him if you can basically do the most difficult problems.
OMG,I got an A! Not a natural math person and the only difficulty that I had, and I think that this is what others might mean, is that he is such a genius at math! It's like he and I speak different languages. He does "prove" a lot on the board, but that is what helped me. "If, then." Don't second guess...these are the rules. He teaches confidence.
the techer is hard. i'm glad i took him though b/c now i am doing very well in physics with calc. he really prepared me well for this class. i'm one of the few people who are actually passing it.
I like his teaching style. He teaches for understanding not just a superficial approach. I can honestly say I undertsand calculus a lot better than in high school. He focuses on concepts and not just computations and memorizations. If you REALLY want to understand calculus I recommend him.
Professor Overhiser is not very good at explaining problems. But you will still get it. and if you do the homework, you will pass his class. Test is not easy but most of the problems are from the homework or similar to it.
OK,I know he trys to be a good professor and very knowledged, but he is really hard. He explain things very cleary in the class and I felt I got it, well, when I get home I wasn't able to do it. If you want to pass this course desprtly, and then don't take it with him.
He is a really good professor. Attendance is mandatory beucase you don't want to miss all the things that he'll be covering. If you do all your homework problems before the test, you'll pass almost all his tests and will get a good grade. Overall he is an ok teacher. I would recommend him to my friends.
he is kinda hard i hafta agree. he explains very clearly though. he's very patient with everyone in class and always wants you to bring questions to class to talk about. there's alot of hw....one of the reasons why he's so hard.
He is SO hard. He teaches an easy version of a concept and then assigns the harder version for homework. He only works out two of the homework problems on the board, and the two problems he picks are based on how many students had trouble on a certain problem. I failed his class, but I tried my best.
I thought his class was easy. Then again, I'm really great at math to begin with too. Doing the HW is really the only way to do well on his exams. He really makes you understand in depth the concepts and theories behind everything; I really like that style/philosophy. Don't take him if you want an easy grade though.
He is a nice person, that is no doubt. But he is not a good teacher. Teach the easiest sample of question but ask you to know how to do the hard ones on the test; spends about 30 or 40 minutes explaining how to do ONE problem; and he spends lots of time telling stories. Not receommended to people who needs further math courses such as calculus 2/3.
great guy, great teacher, pretty hard but very patient and friendly.
Wow, he sure beats any of my professors at UCF! I'm glad I took this class with him. I really understand how to prove things now. This has really helped me be successful in my linear algebra class. Highly recomended!
Great teacher. Explains everything with good examples. Wish he teached Calc II and III as well.
AVOID THIS CLASS! Will elaborate more once the semester is over.
Nice guy, but this class is way too hard. The tests are extremely difficult to do well on; and that is all your grade consists of with the exception of one homework grade. He teaches easy problems, and does use problems from the homework on the test, but changes the numbers on the tests too very difficult ones.
Worse math teacher i've ever had! first math class i got a C in and well i worked my ass off for it, his tests are nothing close to what he tells you they are going to be. This class was torture for me, especially with "story time" he can take more than an hour on ONE prob. Stay away from taking this class. I hope you reading this overhiser!
Great teaching ability.
Strays off topic WAYY TOO MUCH!I DONT recomend him. I have no idea why people gave him good grades. He gave my class 4 tests and final, and ability to drop one. homework every day, and attendance is anal. If you want to both learn and get good grade, run away from him. You can spend whole class talking about 1 question and assign the next chapter?!
BE WARNED! Overhiser is a terrible teacher. All of the concepts that are presented are done so poorly. Not to mention his tests are worded completely different from the homework you do and the quizzes in class. Your grade is practically made up of only tests aswell. He will not help you either, the door has been locked during office hours before.
very nice guy, wants his students to learn but doesn't explain concepts very well. if your good at math and have taken pre-cal or algebra 2 even then you should not get anything less then a B. allows 3 absences and tests aren't bad at all, and not a hard grader
Best teacher ever.. THe test are the Homework.. just study all the questions and you will get an A!!
Has a serious problem relating the concepts he teachs, and has a knack for beating around the bush. Do yourself a favor and find someone else instead of having to teach yourself the material. If you end up having to take him, I recommend learning how to save info to your calculator, because he doesnt make you clear them before the tests.
He is a very nice person, but it is hard to know what he's talking about. Not very clear about the material. You have homework every night but he doesn't grade it. Tests are semi-easy but you have to read from the book or you won't know the material at all.
quite possibly the worst teacher ive had...he just rambles on aboutt pointless matters...one time in clss he read a word problem and the book used earthquakes as an example and he went on a 25 minute rant on earthquakes and never finished learning the section and still tested us on that material...he gave us an 8 question final..THE WORST!!!!!!!!!
The absolute worst teacher I have ever had in my whole life. He is boring, and he can hardly do math himself. Tests are extremely hard and very few questions are on the tests. Personally, I would never ever take him again.
what a horrible teacher. He can't explain math problems himself, the last test I took I had to correct the test on 2 of the questions because he couldn't even have the correct answer as a choice. The only grades that counts are test grades. I had all A's on all of the tests, but ended up with a B for the semester b/c of the final. do not take him!
YOU CAN NOT PASS HIS TESTS!!!!!!!!!!!! NO ONE IN MY CLASS GOT HIGHER THAN A "C" ON ANY TEST. But if you must take him DO THE HOMEWORK, He works a lot out of it.
Very nice guy, but unless you have a good base understanding I would recomend taking someone else. His tests are not very close to the lessons from class. You will need to teach yourself alot in this class so unless you are great at math take someone else. He is not very clear when explaining things and you will need extra help to do well in class
He can not teach! He makes no sense! When you get in the class and sit down, just get back up, and leave. You're better off teaching yourself.
He was a decent teacher, he expected you know Calc I, but was very helpful and always available during office hours taking the time to further help you out. I can see why some people wont like him as he went very fast, but with the Mathlab and office hours I did fine.
Professor Overhiser is one of the finest teachers at VCC. His lectures and homework problems are rich and to the point. He collects homework and there are 4 tests and A Final. I was able to get an A+ on every test and assignment, you just have to study.. a lot . I recommend him to anyone who has a brain.
Got an A.Take advantage of the library tutors and their solutions manual. It will help you get thru hw much quicker, and they are very helpful in helping with any question.Collects hw on test day.Give it a once over.Make sure you know how to solve every qu w no help.Usually 6 sections per test,15 hw qu per section. He's easy, fun, and friendly
goes really quick and very hard to keep up, over 60% of the class drop and homework are long, hard and hand picketed (I remember once I spent an hour looking at a problem and it took me a while with a lot of help from math lab to get it and I wasn't the only one). His test short answer and no extra credit so it's do or die.
Prof Overhiser is amazing. He goes through ever step and makes sure his students fully understand what's going on. He expects a lot from his students, such as doing homework and succeeding, but all professors should. I'm taking him now For Calc I and I am exnjoying it sooooo much! I highly recommend him!
His in class notes are not helpful with the homework. There is only 1 solution manual and he has it, so you have to visit his office hours if you ever want to check your homework. The book was not very helpful. The only thing that was helpful was the study guides he give before each test. Grade is based on 3 test, proof portfolio, & number theory
I am not a math person, but got by with a B. If you have to calc this is the way to go. Examples in class were not the same as homework or tests. So you really need to understand the concepts to get a good grade, but he is also a lenient grader. Most of the people failing never did homework-it's worth a test grade.
Do your homework and you'll be fine. He LOVES math. I got an A. He will explain homework problems to you. Get a graphing calculator!! Rent it at least
good professor. Gives very good notes.
I'm terrible at math but Overhiser is incredibly helpful. All you have to do is go to him and ask for help. He's really easy to talk to. It's always nice to have a teacher who is excited to be there and loves what he does.
great class. i learned more from him than all my previous math classes combined.
Calculus is a very difficult class and you have to spend a lot of time studying and doing hw. There are 4 tests which are each 15% of grade, hw is 20% of grade and final is 20% of grade. He doesn't do any extra credit and isn't very leniant on grading but he will substitute your final exam grade for your lowest grade.the class is hard but he is good
Do HW,study Hw,& online worksheets and you will do pretty good.Pay attention in class and take notes.Detailed and clear, but still hard for you non-math lovers like myself. No helps, like bonus, drop lowest grade, etc. I busted my arse and got a B.Took for ColAlg and got an A.Take if you need to, but not my top pick.Try McClowski.Easier to get an A
He is the best teacher in any math class I've ever had, literally. He will go over the hw problems you need to, and will explain it in multiple ways if you don't get it at first. You can ask him any questions you have in class, and he'll answer them. Excellent teacher but you must go to class, take notes, and do hw. Calc is tough, he makes it easy.
Great Profs are hard to come by for math. his teaching style may not work for everyone, but he KNOWS his stuff and genuinely cares about helping students. Homework was extensive, but it wasn't repetitive. He picked the good problems and forced you to learn on those. Keep up with homework and even if you withdraw, you will get alot from this.
He ran through the material, didn't give hardly any time for questions, and when he did takr the time to explain something further, most people were even more lost and confused by him. His real word examples were off the wall things like the percentage of manatee population throughout the century.
Steer Clear of This Professor if you are Not strong in Math! He Runs through the Material and Expects Everyone to be a Mathematician. His Tests are Difficult to Pass and Homework Load in Unbearable. Not Pleasant to Say the Least!
DO NOT Take if you are not strong in Math! He Runs through the Material and Expects students to be Mathematicians. He Gives Lots of Homework and tests are unbearable. steer clear.
The Lessons were inconsistent with the material in the book and He ran through the material leaving you less clear than before you asked the questions. The homewrork assigned was completely irrelevant to the tests leaving the students more likely to fail. Not Recommended for someone not strong in math.
do not take.. Especially if you are not strong in math.
Excellent teacher. Calculus requires home studying. There is no way that everything can be covered in the class, but if you have problems with homework he takes time to explain and make sure you understand the problem. He says upfront what will be on the test that give you a chance to prepare better.
Prof. Overhiser is very clear and his teaching style is amazing!!! Go to every class, do the homework and you will really do well. If you have any inconvenience just talk to him and he will understand. It's only the beginning of the semester but I have learned so much with him already, I'm sure I will do very well.
Do Not Take- Steer Clear If you are Not Strong in math! He reviews material way to quick and expects perfection on all tests.
Do not take! Steer Clear. Its virtually impossible to pass this class if you are not strong in math.
Do not take his class never ever, i had to take it because i had no other options. He never uses textbook. then he gives incredibly hard worksheets even the tutors from math center cant solve it and he simply laughs it off. His exams are hard as hell too.
He is the least helpful and organized teacher. He is almost mean to certain students and is self absorbed. I honestly don't think he cares if his students pass or not.
This was the worst teacher i have ever had. DO NOT TAKE HIM!Does not help students at all, gives you the hardest worksheets that the tutors could not solve, and his test are ridiculous. The test are nothing like what you learn in the homework and in class. Even if this is last resort, do not take him.
My strongest suggestion is do not take this professor! He is not helpful at all, teaches Calculus in a Pre Calculus class. Almost all of the class withdrew by the end of the semester. Examples taught in class are completely different then whats on the test. Expects you to already know what he is teaching you.
This class wasn't easy for me. Took his 6 week summer class because I had no choice. This class takes dedication. Tests are full of trick questions. Homework was given every night and harder than the examples done in class. Extra credit.. don't even ask. I attended every class and studied a good 2 hours a day and still got a C... a low C. Beware!
WORST math teacher I have ever had in my life. Test full of trick questions. Tons of homework every night that have nothing to do with tests. Not a helpful teacher at all and if you are not good at math to begin with do not take this class. No extra credit to even help your grade. The average test grades in my class were 60's and 70's. Steer clear.
Worst teacher I have ever taken. His tests are horrible. Gives a bunch of online homework and puts material on the tests that he never even taught. He takes up about half of the class time to talk about the last class and then rushes the rest of the class to teach what he had planned but doesn't even get through the material.
Pretty Clear.a jokster. Gave homework every night which sucked but if helped me make good grades on the test.
Don't take his class if you're not good at math. The only reason I survived was bc of my prior knowledge to what he was teaching. Ask a question & you'll end up more confused by his answer. Homework every single night. He grades them by picking a random q' and grading you just on that. Mostly kept to himself except when teaching. Wouldn't recommend
Only gives you 5 chances for grades all semester so not easy at all but if you just do the homework and study a bit for the test he is not hard at all
Most of his homework is through online assignments. He gives a lot of extra credit opportunities in each test. If you are taking him pay attention to his class and you MUST do the assignments to get and A in each test. Make sure you have at least 6 or more hours a week to complete the assignments. Overall great instructor and likes to make jokes.
He is a good teacher. A lot of assignments but easiest ones from the textbook. His solutions are a little bit different from the book. However, you will be confused if you are not good at math because his teaching style is sometimes confusing.
He is the hardest teacher i have ever had. I didnt learn anything and i had to teach myself everything in his class. I DO NOT RECOMMEND HIM!
He is the worst teacher I've ever taken. He doesn't teach, he skips steps and expects you to know how to do it. I've gotten A's on every math class I've taken and I would say I'm really good at math. However, for this class, I end up having to teach myself the entire chapter before the test. I would NOT recommend taking his class. in fact, avoid it
He gives lectures the last five minutes of class
NO NO NO!!! Don't take this professor!!! The HW and Worksheets he gives isn't what is hard, they're his test. First test I took for granted, but second test I studied the whole week for using the practice problems he gave us for the textbook, AAND I DID WORSE!!! If you plan to take him, make sure you plan on being at the mathlab everyday.
Gives study guides that are exact layouts of the test, uses ALEKS so be prepared to do homework every night, but only for an hour or two. While ALEKS doesn't necessarily prepare you for the tests it helps master concepts. Just do the study guides, don't be afraid of tutors or asking for help, and don't fall behind in ALEKS.
Professor Overhiser is really nice. He is helpful when he answers questions. The homework is easy and it is worth 30% of your grade, which is helpful. However, his tests are really hard. The study guides he provides are nothing like the test. This class is definitely not an easy A.
He is okay, explain everything pretty good during class, not many test but could take big portion of your grade, homework matters. He personally can be a little awkward (for me), but the way he explain things and the course structure works (for me). I would take him again. Attend class, because he go over anythings in class.
He explains from the bottom to the top, until you completely understands the subject. His homeworks are fine, and his tests/quizzes are equal to the homeworks. Just do all homeworks on time, ask your questions, and you will ve ready. Quizzes almost every week, be prepared!
Not a bad teacher, as I had him for Pre-Calc and received a B in the class, but if your not that good at math I suggest picking someone else who has the patience to meet up with you and help you whenever needed. He is definitely not for people who struggle. The test are harder than homework so be prepared. First math class I truly struggled in.
I had a great semester with Professor Overhiser. His course is structured and planned out upon the start of the course so you always know what your going to learn before class has even started. I would definitely recommend taking this class with Professor Overhiser if you are willing to put in the work. Overall great professor! Highly reccommended!
He is super smart.... and he doesn't know how to dumb things down and that's what got me... his homework or lectures won't actually prepare you for the test I learned everything I learned this semester from Khan Academy.... and then I made my own study guide...
His homework is much easier than his tests. Gives time to a few questions before the class begins. Lots of homework!! But if you do it on time, you will definitely will pass with an A.
I took his class on campus. He gives homework for every lesson and there is a quiz every week. 4 tests counting the final. He teaches good and his quizzes are very easy, easier than the homework. His tests are not hard either. He gives extra credit. He cares about his students and he is great! TAKE HIM!!!
Did class Spring 2017. No extra credit. Math Lab is mandatory, if spent a lot of time on it, & help of tutors, it will lift grade by making sure it's 100%. 3 tests15%, weekly quizzes10%, math lab20% and final exam25% is the whole grade. % is approx of what I remember. He's clear, but only able to reach in office hours outside of class. Grades Fair.

I really don't recommend taking this professor. I took him for a 6 week class, but he goes incredibly fast and does not take time to review and go over material. He is sassy and doesn't seem to care about students passing. I had to go to the tutoring center a lot, to fill in information that I didn't get in class. Would not recomend him at all :/
Great professor. Very accessible if you need help. Will answer questions and tries to make sure you understand it. Has some funny stories (his laugh is even more hilarious). Easy A if you take his class.
Is very clear with his teaching but if your not sure on something he'll explain it. All his test are in the classroom and are on problems that he tells us are on the test before hand. The homework is all online and helps with preparation for the test.
I teach myself for all my courses. A very important skill to have as you will run into professors with bad teaching methods. With Prof Overhiser, I noticed that this was not the case. Even though I didn't need the teaching, his lectures were easy to follow, things explained well making the derivations not explained well in the book understandable.
As confusing as calculus is, he does a great job confusing you further than you were before. He is not accessible outside of class and when you do try to show up for help during very limited office hours he WILL NOT help you as he is working on something else more important. Take him ONLY if you already know calc. STAY AWAY you've been warned!
I took a 6 weeks class and I had to drop the class. He gives Awesome lectures and makes you understand everything. Homework is by hand and its alot but it helps alot!!! Dont wait till last minute to do it, it wont work. His test were the problem. They are 23 questions. First 20 were no partial credit and the last 3 are. Failed all of them.
If you want extra credits, don't take him. if you want an easy A, don't take him. if you are not good at math, don't take him. if you will play with your phones in the class, don't take him. quiz every week. attendance is mandatory. he gives some helpful tips. he is caring and funny. if you really put in efforts, you are fine no matter what.
I think that he is a great calculus professor. He really tries to make you understand the lesson with lots of analogies. There is a homework assignment with every lesson and a quiz every other lesson. Never a time that there is something unexpected. He even literally tells you what's on the test. But don't take it to easy, calculus is still hard.
Overhiser really cares that students understand the material. He gives regular quizzes and homework that are extremely helpful preparing for tests. Does test reviews before every test to let you know what will be on it. If you show up and don't procrastinate on the homework, you'll be fine.
Highly recommend. He is the only professor to make me think critically about how different formulas are related to one another and to concepts learned in previous math classes. He is always willing to explain a concept until you get it, but you have to actively participate and ask questions when something isn't clear. 12 quizzes, 3 tests & final.
Very confusing 3 tests 12 quiz. go to every class, do not be late or half credit for the day in attendance. will change attendance grade mid class if you leave early. goes off on tangents wastes time, no breaks in a 2 and a half hour class.
If you aren't good at math, don't take him. He expects you to get the material down after going over one example, and calls it, AND I QUOTE, "a waste of time" to go over questions you have in class. He definitely cares about his students and tries for everyone to understand, but we aren't all calculus professors.
Take professor Overhiser! I took Calc 2 twice before him and failed both times. He makes things make sense to you and he always stayed after class if anyone had any questions. He is also the only Math professor that I have had that tales the time to know his students. His tests are a little long, but also very easy.
Used mymathlab for hw, not a big fan as I dont think he reviews enough of what is actually in the hw in class, just the very basics, i learned more/ quicker in the textbook. spends a bit too much time explaining how an equation was created rather than using that time for more examples on it. 3 exams, lots of hw, and a cumulative final.
He provides PLENTY of resources to be successful in his class. Work was always due Sunday at midnight. The class never felt overwhelming in any way. He is available through email and zoom if you need it. There is no extra credit or extensions on work, but as long as you stay on top of things there isn't really a need for it.
Do not take his class. His grading scale makes it so that a B is from 85-93% and A's are 94% and higher which makes it really hard to get an A, especially since he offers no extra credit or help. Doesn't make his own lectures and everything is done through Pearson. The only plus is that you can do homework after the due date with a 25% penalty.
Tough grader over every single little detail. Its exhausting.
His tests make no sense, very hard to pass.
Grading scale is horrible, 94-100 is an A, 86-94 is a B, and 70-85 is a C. Homework won't raise your grade at all, can only hurt you. Tests barely raise your grades, and are nothing like the provided examples from the homework/textbook. Very textbook oriented class. Everything is from mymathlab or youtube, don't pay hundreds to teach yourself.
Low amounts of homework low amounts of quizzes, quizzes made literally no sense at all and were not related to the homework...
Go to class and pay attention and you should be good. He explains things in a way that makes it easy to understand and if you don't understand, he will stop to explain until he continues with the material. There are quizzes every week. Homework is easy( you get like 5 attempts per question). Test are easy as well if you study. Not a tough grader.
DO NOT TAKE atleast not online.he doesn't have any of his own videos just provides youtube links to other teachers videos and you have to hope you learn what you need to from them.most videos didn't cover what he had on hw. really hard written assignments to turn it and pointless disussion posts. I ended up dropping because he never taught anything
Kurt Overhiser is a straight shooter with what he expects from you. His grading scale is a 94-100 for an A. I finished with a 90 and did n0t know this until the end which was totally my fault. He is very informative and helpful just do not be afraid to ask. His testing is not proctored.(hope this helps)
Online class, prof did not post any lecture videos. The only reason I passed this course was watching Prof Leonard on youtube, an amazing resource. Overhiser's midterm and final were proctored in person at the testing center. The midterm was very fair, the final less so. He provides a study guide with the test material. Use it, you will pass.
He gives lots of resources (besides the textbook) to help you understand the concepts. He also really helps if you are confused on anything. Though be prepared because there is a lot of homework and like 2-3 sections per week. Tough but doable.
91% is not an A, 94% is an A. rushes through material typically covered in weeks in about 4 or 5 days max. every day, new section hw + problem set on top of that. course is scheduled to enforce cramming, so if you take a more rigorous approaches to learning mathematics or just care then take someone else. fine if you quickly memorize formulas.
This guy is exactly what is wrong with current academia. He does not teach! Colleges charge higher prices but offer worse quality, while this lazy guy collects easy checks. Meanwhile, the students suffer! No formulas are ever given on any exam and he changed the grading scale. Forget about getting an A, lower your expectations and get the B.
If you take his class, then you will be forced to learn the material. He does not hold your hand like other college professors. He is very well organized and grades things very quickly. He has rubrics which means grading is transparent and fair. Lazy people should stay away, this is for people who really love math/learning.
I didn't do well with the pacing of the course, felt faster than a summer term. Odd grading scale.. Regardless, he will respond to you/provides feedback. He provides an exhaustive amount of resources to learn from too. Sadly, my time was spread thin for various reasons. To the "rigor" reviewer: Calc 2 isn't analysis! Oh, the final is kinda rough.
Prof. Overhiser really loves feedback about his lessons and is constantly looking for ways to make his lectures easier to digest and understand. He would ask us after almost every class for feedback and suggestions. He went a bit easy on me when grading quizzes, I think because I took the time to go to his office hours. They are very helpful
Best math prof. three exams each 15% final is 18%. HW is 20% quizzes 20%. Clear lectures. Go to his office hours if necessary. Don't study last minute. Do some of the non-graded hw everyday so you only have to review when studying. Ask questions. He's sacarstic
I took this class online which I thought was going to be horrible because I struggle with math, but each of the lessons are summarized and broken down so well that it's easy to understand. The lessons are taught through roughy 25 minute videos that are followed by a quiz, but as long as you take notes and follow along they are easy to pass.
Professor Overhiser has a unique teaching style - you'll have to be proactive to succeed. The lectures are dense, but going to office hours and using resources like unstuckstudy can really help. The workload is heavy, so stay on top of assignments.
Professor Overhiser gives you many homework and portfolio assignments to keep your grades up if you don't do well on the in person midterm and finals. The in person tests were definitely the most difficult part of the course, but he gives you a solid study guide for both. If you're willing to put in the effort, I highly recommend his class.
DO NOT TAKE. Assigns 3 online homeworks per week(some with multiple parts) on top of portfolios that are 2 questions each, and discussion posts. "Lectures" were just links to youtube and an overwhelming amount of links to another professor's site. Midterm and final are in person and no formulas are allowed. Will not round your grade no matter what.
Literally, he putted stuff that wasnt on the text book on the test, and more than half of the class dropped
I had to retake college algebra and I am not the best at math, but I actually learned and passed this time. Very good teacher.
